did you try out again? I want somebody. Give me that Answer.
Somebody speak up.
When you woke up this morning, what else? When you started Train young men.
Your triumph started when you took your first breath.
Welcome to another episode of a different basketball podcast.
My name is Jordan Mount.
Today we're joined by a power couple and Maya And you, Sean Blackman.
Or welcome to the oh, so real quick.
A little background on U two s.
So where'd you guys meet? At way.
Gotta have a love story to start off the show Way.
Syria E I seen her passing by and I was like, Man, Yeah, she she's the one, But she ain't She ain't going for with me.
She's not gonna mess with me.
Way had common friends, and we ended up It was funny and funny enough.
One of my friends said, Hey, man, I know the perfect girl for you.
I'm like, you know, a girl for me and, uh, turns out right, right? Right.
So shout out Thio on.
And now And now You guys air.
How long have you guys been married for going on? Seven years.
Seven years? Oh, Wow.
And now you guys air to t mos of the new expansion team.
Little Rock Lightning.
You know how How is that? You guys get to do that together, And that's something that you guys get the have, you know, collectively.
How does that feel? And what is that like? Um, it's a blessing, man.
It's a blessing.
It's, ah, dream come true.
I never thought I would be saying that We are a team market.
Owners of a professional basketball team.
You know, God placed the vision on our heart back a soon as I got out of college, you know? And you know, he was telling me which way to go, and I didn't believe it.
You know, I didn't believe it.
And, you know, a few years later, man, here we are, We're doing it and it just shows you that God put some on your heart.
Hey, gotta go after whether it looks like you can or not go after and it's it's fun.
It's a lot of fun, a lot of hard work, But it's so much fun.
Yeah, real quick to set the rest.
The tone of the interview.
I googled your name and it said that you played at Little Rock, Arkansas.
Is that right? E? I was gonna ask, Were you on the team that beat Purdue when Purdue is a to seed? And you guys were like a 15 seed? No, I was actually I was still there, but mileage really, unfortunately had ran out.
And, uh, yeah, but I was there supporting those guys.
Big shout out to the team. Big shout outs.
Uh, man, Josh, you get a big shot, bro.
That was amazing, team.
It was an amazing season for so Yeah, no man.
But those are my guys James White, STIs and buildings those my guys.
So I'm sitting at home watching that game.
I'm in my living room, I still remember it.
And I think he hit that shot at the end of the game.
And I about put my pants e I was like you Seriously, that, like, ruin my whole entire bracket? My whole entire bracket e.
Okay, those a huge shots.
My, I want to talk a little bit about you.
So you're a nurse and I just wanna see.
So how has being a nurse you know helped you with this business.
I know it's your one, but, you know, this stuff just doesn't happen, right? So how is being a nurse helped you in this process of helping out the Little Rock Lightning? Yeah.
So in a lot of ways, one of the ways is we do camps and clinics.
So, you know, just, uh you know, when kids come in and you have to make sure that they don't have any allergies, any type of illnesses or anything like that.
So I have been able to bring up my nursing practice, you know, to help the kids down.
Just keep it on them.
Also, our last combine, Um, you know, do the cove it, You know, we have to have strict precautions.
So, like, you know, making sure nobody We did tempt checks at the door full screening, making sure they wouldn't around.
Anybody would cover in 19 and muscle aches, anything like that.
So, like, I didn't The funny part is, I don't think I would use nursing as much as I'm using it right now, so yeah.
No, I think that's great.
Are you guys are you guys working on protocols that you guys gonna have during the season and the rest of your combines for Kobe.
19. I know it's like, there's there's no right answer.
But, you know, I'm curious to see what different teams are trying to dio Absolutely, man way have a strict board.
Uh, just, uh, some great nurses.
Yeah, all my best friends are a majority of my best friends are nurses.
So, like, we're super strict, like 10 people at a time, Like everybody spaced out.
When you come in, you have to have your mask on, or you will get a master foot off.
So, like, we're super.
Yeah, we're like, I have a friend all the way through, You know, the compound to the court, back to the weight.
I'm super serious about it.
So I'm gonna definitely We're gonna definitely follow that until the season. Absolutely.
I'm curious to see how you know these seasons they're gonna go high school, high school, college, um, pros or whatever is gonna happen.
But you know the cove, it's gonna be definitely different.
Uh, is Arkansas sports? Is it happening right now? It's happening.
Uh, they're still testing out a lot of stuff, uh, trying to figure it out.
Uh, you know, you can do what you can do.
And, you know, unfortunately, when things have to shut down, you just got to shut it down.
But we're hoping and praying that, you know, thanks.
Clear up so we can get it back going, man.
Because I know a lot of people out there are missing the sportsman.
I'm definitely one.
I mean, the bubble is cool, but, man, there's nothing like going to a game.
There's nothing like going to a game.
That's why I got my Raiders had on man.
The NFL season started.
Huge Raiders fan S O e.
Do wanna talk, though. I mean, little rock.
And even in Arkansas in general, I mean, there's really no pro sports.
I mean, what what if if outside of cove in 19 you know, if you want to go to a pro basketball game or a basketball game, where you going? Oh, man, you could go down by the river.
Uh, man, to be honest, if there there's ah, yeah, I mean, you got a few.
You got a few colleges around you know you know town, but I mean, at the end of the day, there's like, said, There's nothing here pro.
There's nothing here.
Pro A in Little Rock And so you know I mean, as far as like, you know, a protein.
This would be big.
We did have, though, you know, back in the day this is Blaine way back in the day we did have the Rockets red rocks on.
That's why I'm saying Go down by the river on and go to the Used to go to the reader, Catch a few games.
And every now and then you have a few teams that were playing in the It's not the Verizon read anymore.
It is the sentence sentence bank Corinne.
And you could go down there and, you know, catch a few games of colleges.
The halls using play their most, but yeah, man, no.
We have a big vacancy.
There needs to be filled in having a protein in the room.
Rockets had a great run.
And even with the rim rockers, they have, like the They broke a record for attendance in minor league history.
Reminding s so we know that people will support Man. Arkansas.
And I know this is something that we would get behind.
I know that this market is ready.
Uh, it's just a We try to bring it back, try to bring it back.
We are going to bring it back.
Is that how did the how the relationship started with the Maglis? You know, I know we'll get toe where the value of little rock is a little bit later.
But you know, how did that conversation start? How did you find tbl or how TV I'll find you and how you walk me through that That journey that that you guys could have have been taken.
So it started with a prayer started with a prayer.
I know that kind of sounds cliche, but it's really way, uh, we're fresh off being in another league, and we were looking for something that was, you know, that lead was okay.
But we were looking for something bigger and we knew that there had to be something bigger out on DSO.
We prayed about it.
We prayed about it much, much like the magazine in founding the whole leap, um, ended up coming across.
I had a friend of mine.
Actually, he told me we were doing open run, and he told me about this league and I was thinking like, Man, we're in this league.
This league looked like where we need to be.
Eso just ended up, you know? And I looked up the information and I'm just looking up, you know, just being really looking up the budget for it.
I'm like, Oh, my God, I can't do this E And so it waas because you know it It just ended up being a called t Mr David magazine.
And you know how he is.
I'm like, Okay, this guy, he's pretty cool.
It's pretty cool.
He's just trying to sell me something.
He's trying to say that's not who he really is.
And turns out he was really like that.
He was really like that.
He got me on the phone with Evelyn who really want Yeah, that's right.
Zoe won t o uh way ended up reaching out to him and talking with them.
And after after a conversation, they had us convinced that we could do had this convention.
They said they would help, and they have.
They helped along the way.
And, uh, yeah, it was just It was a God thing.
It was definitely a God thing.
And you know something that I didn't even think that we could do? E think, uh, you know, Maggs is a different.
He's a character man.
First, the first time I met was December of last year.
And, uh, I was like, Oh, man, that's a weird dude.
I'm gonna combine and there's like, 250 players and he's talking about rapping in front of everybody And I'm like, E o man, uh, it's a It's a It's a dynamic that that keeps on giving.
There's never a dull moment.
I've been in the car of them, you know, One trip.
We went to New York, I think I've told this story before and we were in New York, and it was, uh, that was a long, long trip.
E looking out the window, put my headphones in E.
They're really they're really Well, that's one thing I love about them.
They're really because sometimes you get a relationship with somebody you know, and they're not.
They're so professional that, you know, it kind of scares you, but that they're extremely professional.
But they're really you feel, you know, like, they feel like family.
That and that's what want us over is the fact that they do feel like way knew that this is where you know he And it's funny everything that he was saying, that he was gonna do everything that they were saying that they were gonna do, Uh, they they're doing it they're doing.
It's amazing to see that we're sitting at 22 teams and we're gonna announced 23 24 years old.
And that takes a strong leader, some strong leaders.
And it also takes a just just good people supporting you.
And I think that that's what this league has, you know? So, yeah, I think that, I think, is the biggest trait.
You know, their biggest trait. Evelyn and Davis's.
They're you know, they're dreamers, which which is cool to see, you know, on Do you see that? You know, in there every day and and even sometimes I don't believe the stuff he's saying like, Oh, whatever, man.
And then he does it.
I'm like, Wow, that Zinn credible.
I don't know how you pull that off. Yeah.
What? What? You know what? What's been the response of the league to you guys? I know every time that a new new team comes on, he always sends me the person's phone number.
And I always text him, You know, how many text messages did you guys get? The day that you decided to be like? Okay, we're in.
And, you know, it was nothing beloved.
Uh, not just from the magazines themselves, but also from the community.
Man, like everyone on here, all of the teams and leagues, it's just, you know, it was a big thing.
It is a big thing, and it's still unbelievable in so many ways.
But we got so, you know, in in the big thing that you get is is all of the talent around here that's reaching out, you know, like they wanna be a part of this.
They definitely wanna be.
It sounds like a snowball effect.
Like it started out.
You know, a couple of people calling and it's like it just keeps multiplying.
You know, more people like, Hey, I heard about you.
I heard, you know, So I can't wait to see it at a school, you know? Oh, yeah.
This is this is gonna be made way.
Cannot wait to see what this becomes.
Yeah, I think e what? I wanna ask real quick.
You know, the talent level in Arkansas and Little Rock specifically.
So I'm gonna do I did my research, right.
Derek Fisher's for marketing rock.
Joe Johnson is rock, you know.
And then Jerry Jones was the owner of the Dallas Cowboys.
He's not an athlete, whatever, you know, but But he's still, you know, you know, tell me a little bit about the talent in the area.
What What's the talent like, man, I will say that this is why we needed this year and we needed to sustain because we need a avenue because it is so much talent around here.
It's a lot of guys that can really go out here, you know? And, you know, even hopefully one day we have a women's TVs because there's a lot of women that go around, Uh, and it's just that we need that outlet.
We need another avenue to say that.
Hey, you don't have to go just the traditional way.
You go this way and you know, we can, uh, expand upon our careers and and, you know, it's a lot of guys like I said that have reached out and we want to give.
I wish we could give everybody an opportunity and we want to give everybody an opportunity.
But, you know, hey, it's only a certain amount of spots.
But the good thing is is that, Hey, every year, it's something every year or something. E.
I think one of the best parts with a lot of players that's showing interest, they would have to go received and play.
And so a lot of them are very interested because they want to stay home.
They're gonna play somewhere where their family could come see them play, you know, they want to be able to still have a family and raise their kids, but still do the thing that they love.
So I think that that that's a huge blessing.
Yeah, right, right, right And then And that's But no, it za really big talent out here.
We'll drop some names, man, but I don't want anybody to get jealous.
So I'm just say, overall, there's a lot of talent.
E do Gotta get one shot out to somebody.
Hey, that's my God! That's my guy.
He's already a part of life.
And I can't wait to get out there with today.
Ready for you, man.
That'll be great, man, I I got I got one more question.
And then and then we'll get to my favorite part of the show.
Um, if is for both of you see, both answer.
If somebody random comes up to you on the street and they say, Hey, um what is little Rock lightning? Or, you know, what do I need to know about Little Rock Lightning that's gonna set you apart from everybody else? What? What would that be? Oh, I would say that, you know? Hey, we are totally for the community.
We are totally a a sports team that is trying to boost engagement of the community, bring people out, bring people together.
We are also very faith based, and we're not afraid to say that way.
Dio believe that.
You know, everybody has their own walks in life, but it just happens to be, uh, you know, in Jesus Christ.
And so yes, no way really are more than just a basketball team.
We are a light in this community.
It's like, Yeah, that's what I was gonna say.
Our whole name lightning is We came up with that.
You know, basically, I gave us a vision.
The reason why we picked up the lawn green color is because we wanted something to blow, You know, we're the light in the darkness.
So also, what are we doing? A foundation called the Identity where we're gonna help kids, you know, find their identity.
So the biggest thing about lightning is the fact that we're a life, you know, the doctors were there for people, Um, also to were there to help even the players.
You know what I mean? It's fine.
If there, you know, it's like a second chance.
You know, the still do the thing they love and just kinda, you know, be taught different things, like, you know, the Lord gave us that opportunity toe, you know, be vessels and teach us and give us a new way.
So we want to be there for our community.
Oh, I love that.
I think I think a lot of kids who struggle and, you know, even adults to struggle with with an identity thing.
And, um, you know, I think a t least in one part of your life, you're gonna have an identity crisis and and, um, you know, I think that's a great great, but that's the first time I've ever really heard of something like that.
You know, it specifically an identity thing.
Um, how did you come up with that way? Say that these steps have been ordered, man.
They really way just caught up in it, man.
We just We just let them do it and we just We just walk.
Well, this is my favorite part of the show.
But now I just realized that there's two of you, so we may have to do it twice.
You guys gotta gotta both put you on.
Maybe we can make it a competition.
We can do it twice. It's the speed round.
You wanna You wanna do a competition way? Yeah, I'm all right.
No, That means Well, I'm gonna have to start. Okay.
Alright. Alright. Alright. alright.
I d o by We'll figure it out.
I put my put one minute on the clock.
All right, we'll go.
We'll go to Sean first.
So what I'll do is I'll ask a certain set of questions and then I have another set of questions That way.
