Good evening, everybody.
And welcome to a special episode of full press coverage live.
My name is the England, and I am your host, and I am joined tonight by the man.
His name is Mr Mike Debate.
He is the full press coverage Patriots managing editor.
And it is a good thing to have him here because we're talking patriots tonight.
It is Josh Gordon.
He was reinstated by the NFL, so he will be ready to go for week one of the 2019 season.
And, ah, what? What? Ah, what a bit in Friday news them news that we got today.
So Ah, without further ado, I just want to say, Welcome in, Mike.
How you doing? Lumber, huh? Always great to be introduced with that.
I tell you, it never gets old.
Seinfeld is the gift that keeps on giving all year long.
Um, no, in any case, thank you very much for having me here, and I have.
So I appreciate it.
And absolutely, definitely looking forward to talking some Josh Gordon.
Got to be one of the all time great NFL news dumps.
Six o'clock on a Friday night just when you thought you were out.
They pull you back in.
But, uh, for Patriots fans, for once, these news dumps actually had a happy ending for Patriots.
Abandoning that, Josh is going to be able to get back on field and look taking the prolific talent that he brings to the table off the table right now.
The most important thing here is that it looks like, at least for now, that Josh has need great strides toward being able to put his difficulties behind him and be able to move forward toward a bright future.
And ultimately, that's the most important thing here.
We want to make sure that Josh is in a right frame of mind.
He's able to move forward and find that piece that's eluded him so much in his life nine and be able to move forward on the field.
There's really a few guys that have and the ability to change the game the way Josh Gordon does.
It's unbelievable watching him on the field, taking a look at what he did with Tom Brady and just a very, very limited sample.
Last year was remarkable and it really got Patriot Standing site is Josh is able to stay healthy, stay on the field and stay focused.
Then this could be a very exciting season in the wing, one taking looking not just Josh Gordon, but also the talent that he has around him.
I know a lot of people are really knocking the wide receivers core, but have been doing a lot of deep diving into the wide receiver corps this year, taking a look at what he's what these guys bring to the team.
And there's a lot of talent on this roster this year.
So adding Gordon into the mix Onley accelerate that and dances it.
And I think it's gonna be a fun season in New England.
But assuming all goes and don't don't worry, folks.
Your camera did not freeze.
That was just Mike talking.
That is why I was not moving for a long period of time.
But, no, I'm just I'm just messing with you, Mike.
We we love your analysis, and you you made a couple of really great points.
Um, first and foremost the fact that, you know, he seems to be in the right place in a in a right place, something that he apparently wasn't back in December.
And, um you know, obviously both of us, you covered the team.
And, you know, obviously I follow very closely and you know that he's someone we've been paying close attention to over the last few months, even during the Patriots Super Bowl run, because he always kind of felt like he wasn't that far away.
Um, And by that I mean, just Thea the relationship he's had with some of the players in particular Tom Brady.
And and, uh, you know how he's kind of literally and figuratively opened up the doors for him in certain instances.
So, um, you know, this is great for the guy.
Josh Gordon and I wrote about this in a quick little news piece.
Ah, I'm sure you guys are gonna go into it much more in depth over the week.
But ah, you know that everyone in the NFL should be happy for the person.
Ah, for you know, for the ah, you know, just the life story for Josh Gordon that, you know, hopefully he's over his struggles and everything like that.
However, I don't think anyone outside of the New England fan base is happy to see him back on the field because all of a sudden this Ah, this team that, um and I say this very jokingly who was who was, you know, Ah, very, very thin, wide receiver corps.
And I I say jokingly because I think none of us were really up in arms about what they were going into the offseason with, whereas some people were talking about this being a, um, you know, just a sorry group of receivers.
Now all of a sudden, you look at you have Josh Gordon.
You have Julian Edelman.
You know, Philip Door said, I think is as close to a lock to this roster.
You know, we'll see what happens to have a look rest of the camp.
But then you have Harry and then you have to excuse me.
You know other guys.
Marie Sarah's Jacoby Meyers has been making a lot of noise and preseason.
Um, so all of a sudden there's a There's a pretty big logjam and ah, the good kind, not the We can't find a receiver to fill these last few spots is it's We have too many receivers to fill the thes spots, and that's a good problem for the Patriots that have, And I think this is This is only the beginning.
If Josh Gordon and stay healthy and stay out there.
And, of course, that's always going to be a big if with him.
As much as I'm rooting for him.
Realistically, you got to know you can't count on him right now to be there for 16 full games.
If he is, that's great.
And and again, I think we're all rooting for him to do that.
But, you know, again, you can't pen him in and be like, Oh, yeah, I know he's gonna be there for the entirety.
But if he is, I don't know about you, Mike.
But I'm looking at a pretty potent and pretty unique receiving corps for this Patriots team, and with that, I count the tight ends and the running back.
So what are your thoughts on that? Yeah, I completely agree with you.
I mean, when you look at what Gordon can possibly bring to the table.
Just in 11 games last season, 40 fast, 720 yards and three touchdowns, season absolutely was cut short when Gordon was found to be in violation of the week policy, which was clearly stated in the commissioner's statement.
What wasn't clearly stated in the commissioner's statement is exactly what types of checks and balances there are going to be that Josh has to keep ahead of in order to remain on the field because there is a conditional reinstatement.
And that's one thing I want to caution Patriots fans when they take a look at this doesn't necessarily mean.
And I think you said it perfectly and it doesn't mean that he's going to be right back in the thick of things immediately come back in, going to be prolific, you know, break touchdown records and just, you know, set the world on fire every single game.
This is gonna be a progressive welcome back into the Patriot system for Josh Gordon, and in a way, I think it works out best for him in all facets, not just mentally and emotionally and stable wise getting back in from a football standpoint.
He's been away from the game for quite some time.
He did train with Tom Brady this off season.
We saw the videos and it got us all excited about Josh Gordon coming back, and then we heard that he applied for reinstatement and then today's message, saying that he was gonna come back.
It's all been a progression and a real roller coaster of emotions.
But you do have to remember that there is some learning curve that is going to need to be applied here when it comes to easing back in, even though he does have some experience in the system.
As for the guys that are on this roster that have been really, really doing a phenomenal job, they do have a little bit of a lot.
Jim, you said it very eloquently.
There's guys like, you know, obviously Philip Door Set, who has a good foothold in this organization.
No, I think they trust them a lot of year. Absolutely.
It doesn't always come across like, you know, to to just someone from the outside looking in.
But they seem to have a special sort of trust with them, and I just want to chime in and throw that in there knowing they do, and it really it really is evident on the field and you see the communication.
And before that he has with Tom Brady, one thing that cannot be overstated enough, I don't think, is the relationship that Brady has developed with Jacoby Meyers.
You mention I've had the opportunity to do some of the synergy that these guys have come together with in training camp, and it's really remarkable.
There are times where Brady connects with everything that's thrown in Meyers direction, and that's not an accident.
Books. You have an undrafted rookie free agent.
It's not supposed to happen that way with operating that quickly, but these two guys seemed to click very well.
Marie Terrace is another one that had a tremendous isn't working of excuses, not rookie but mini camp and now into training camp.
Kind of a little bit, but it's still being very prolific out there.
The guy that we haven't even mentioned yet is Braxton Barrios, who has been very impressive.
That's training camp, both from a return standpoint and in working with Brady Yesterday, as a matter of fact, according to Mark Daniels, the Providence Journal Barrios ran the wrong route.
Brady absolutely got on him, shoot him out.
Following route, Barrios shipped his defender and got into a little bit of mystery mission.
And then, after that made a reception, you know, And really, you know which what would have been a first down.
So it's interesting to see these guys really stepping up.
Gordon, coming into this core of wide receivers only enhances it.
And the thought of having him on the same field as a rookie wide receiver named Hell Harry is really, really dancing around in my head right now is something that could be a lot.
Well, this is something to like if you think about last year.
You know, Gronk aside, this team certainly lacked height, and it showed in their red zone production or lack thereof, at least from the passing game.
And, ah, you know, this was this was a pretty clear motive for the Patriots, or at least ah, game plan for the Patriots heading into the offseason.
That was to get some height at receiver.
And you know someone else that we haven't even mentioned yet.
Do Marius Thomas, veteran that got brought in.
He's been working slowly to get back.
You know, he's a guy that again, you know, with all these names that we're throwing out there, you know, he might sneak on and have himself strong, you know, surge toward a roster spot.
Who knows? So again, this is a team that just all of a sudden it seems like overnight went from being a very small team.
Ah, you know, outside of Grant to, you know, Now you got some Might you got again? You mentioned Harry.
You mentioned Josh Gordon obviously came in as polished receiver on this team last year.
Inman? Uh, he's another tall guy.
So again, you know, you're talking about all these.
All of a sudden you have height and you have the ability to attack the red zone like you didn't last year.
Because it is good to Julian Edelman.
He's not gonna be a touchdown machine, you know, It's just it's just in his nature to short.
It's just the position he plays.
He's not going to catch a lot of touchdowns, especially in the red zone.
So, um, in order to, you know, enhance, I guess that offensive efficiency, you're all of a sudden looking at a team that is not trying to replicate Gronk's production with another tight end.
They're just playing a different offense, and this should have been kind of obvious from the onset when he retired.
It's like you're not gonna replicate what Gronk does with one player.
So why waste two players to try to do the things that one player did and likely come up short doing that? Because again, you don't really have the talent, uh, out there to to replace either the offensive side of rock of the defense of our the blocking side of Gronk.
So now all of a sudden, you look at the often do you like.
Okay, now I can see them attacking more with four receiver sets and, you know, relying a little less on the tight end in terms of being a focal point of the offense, even though I I think Benjamin Watson, you know it's going to surprise some people this season, especially after he gets Thea gets that nice little four game vacation to start the season.
Um, so again, it's the excitement is legitimate.
You should be excited if you if you follow the Patriots Ah, one, obviously for Gordon and to see him in this offense and and the fact that he's going to get some opportunity here before the regular season starts to train and practice with this team.
And he won't be out there this weekend cause he can't report to the team till Sunday if I if I read that correctly And, um so of course he's gonna miss this next preseason game.
But, you know, he may be out there for the last one and, uh, set to come be out on the field a week One.
So, uh, it's exciting, Mike and ah, you know, of course, you know, you know all about exciting.
Been doing a lot of exciting things lately.
So, you know, we were talking before you got on the air that you've been ah, talking quite a bit today.
Especially so before we move forward, like I said, Ah, this is Mister Mister.
I call him Mr Rhode Island.
Um, I don't know if anyone else has really picked up on it yet, but his real name is Mike Debate.
You can follow him on Twitter.
And he's on the phone because unfortunately, we could not get his Ah, lovely face on camera.
Actually, his camera broke.
So, er was the struggles we have to deal with with technology nowadays, but, um well, yeah.
Simple. Took one Look at me in a railway.
Anyone respect? Yeah.
See, See, until we actually get John camera, I can actually tell you I've resurrected Rodney Dangerfield from the grave and brought him back and talking to him on the phone right now.
But so before we get going, cause again, we just wanted to really break down what this means for the patriots.
Ah, it's really an exciting, um, last couple weeks at camp, because it's gonna be I mean, the wide receiver battle was was pretty, uh, pretty exciting to begin with.
Now, you throw Josh Gordon, it's in Mexico.
And presumably again.
Like I said, he would be a roster lock.
So, um, I guess I'm gonna put you on the spot a little bit.
Which guys did you see not making this roster because, you know, again, we're not talking about, you know, a bunch of mediocre receivers.
Like, from what we've seen so far, it looks like there's some town on this receiver bunch, and, you know, again, you can't keep everyone, so I'm gonna put you on the spot a little bit here, Mike.
Who do you think is gonna be the odd man or odd men out in this group from a wide receiver for Wow, that's, uh that's gonna be a tough one.
We deal with the tough questions around here.
It hurts me to say, uh, Dontrelle Inman, because I don't really think there's a lot of talent there.
I think that San Diego a guy that is, that is giving everything that he possibly can.
And But, you know, I think ultimately, I just think it's a numbers game and I don't see them being able to make it.
A lot of people were talking about Brexit Barrios making this roster with Gordon's return.
Now he was on the roster bubble and I love Barrios.
I would definitely love to see him on this team.
I just think what he adds in terms of punt returns and just grit and really like that yards after the catch.
And he really does remind me a lot of a Wes Welker Julian Edelman hybrid.
But there's only so many slots available and I just don't see them killing.
All of them are taking away from another part of this roster to stack the team with wide receivers.
It's a very deep personal starter, overwrote it is, and I will say this.
I think I think Jacoby Meyers has done enough to be able to make this team. And rightfully so.
Yeah, I would be absolutely shocked if he were on the cutting room floor.
I don't think that will happen.
A guy that so in terms of in terms, of the guys that I've mentioned in and Barrios right now is probably my my hardest cut.
I've heard some rumblings the last couple of days about door set, and I think that's absolutely ridiculous.
I think as close, like you said, toe a roster lot because of the familiarity that it brings those far saying everything the but roster lock, you know that I would.
I mean, it would surprise me if he got cut, but, you know, I certainly don't put him in the Josh Gordon or Julian Edelman category of you know, 100% certainty that they'll be on this roster.
So yeah, and I don't think I think that's the case was really most of the guys on this team.
Regardless of where there are some very few that are pencil.
Then obviously, Harry, they put a first round pick on him.
I really, sincerely doubt there would be any question whether or not even on the roster.
I mean, there's no question about that, But right now, I see in an impossibly barrios on the outside looking in.
But a guy to keep your eye on is Maurice Harris.
He was really, really impressed people this year, and Aris's looked like a sure fire roster addition.
But with the injury, and also with the emergence of some of these other guys and the fact that he actually has been eclipsed a little bit in training camp by Jacoby Meyers keep a very close eye on Maurice Harris.
I'm not saying these on the outside looking in, but right now it doesn't help more on that.
He might be more on the bubble than people making think.
So keep a sharp eye on Maury.
Sarah's the next couple of weeks.
If he gets healthy and starts the flash, then I definitely don't see in being cut from this roster.
But if things don't turn around from him and they keep progressing on the downward trend that could get interesting as we come to cut my final cut down right before the start of the 2019 season.
Well, like you said, it's a numbers game, and unfortunately, you only have 53 guys and and this team is is far too deep.
Thio, you know, really sacrificed much on another position, and it wouldn't be smart to anyways again, you know, that's you know, you're talking fantasy football mad and, ah, strategy right there.
You know, it just want to be smart to overdo it.
Wide receivers, Especially when when you talk about the Patriots offensive skill positions.
Um, you don't even we haven't even touched on the running backs who are play a crucial role in the passing game, too.
So, um, they kept six wide receivers last year.
I can see them doing something similar again.
It's gonna be tough because, yeah, it's just there's a lot of talent on there and again, maybe Brax and Barrios with Gordon coming back, you know, every everyone gets moved down a notch.
Um, when it comes to death chart projections right now, when when Gordon comes back.
So if they were on the bubble before.
They're certainly below that bubble now and fighting to get back over it.
So, um, this is great.
Mike, this was fun.
We don't do this to too often as much as we like.
Ah, at least what we've have done in the past.
