Some recent recruitment.
If I would put it up about Some of these guys have talked Thio here in SportsCastr.
But anyways, I'm gonna bring on our guests right now.
What's going on? My wife.
How are you? I'm doing.
I'm doing pretty well.
Thanks for asking and you know it's just hot. Brian's interview.
Eso house Last year. Season.
I'm last year season.
I played more of ah, role role player Road.
I was catching shoe.
I was a guy on the boards a lot.
I was trying to be a leader, even though I played behind a lot of big guys like it's like it's at Rhode Island.
So, yeah, I was more of a row player last year.
And where do you just starting in a role player where, you know, coming off the bench and, uh, and all that.
I was starting at the three, Okay, And were you receiving offers on in your car when you receive your first offer? I guess was that, you know, over the summer during your you're a sop****re season at all.
So, actually, freshman year, the summer before I came into ST John's, I gotta off from Stony Brook and then after the second one was from Howard University.
But the new coaches coaching staff left that I gotta offer from, and recently I got offered by the new coach of stuff.
So that was all freshman year.
Yeah, I remember that.
It just happened and the coaches are kind of same thing, like, you know, even though you're not, you know, having a big, dominant role in your team.
Like, you know, I guess we like this.
This is this aspect of your games.
They kind of mentioned like, you're not playing this much like we're gonna offer you for these reasons, I guess. Yeah.
So coaches really saw my potential.
They seen that I was playing, But I big name guys, they just see my potential.
Felt like I would be, uh I will make an impact at their college in the future, even though I wasn't really, like, getting like the ball that much.
But I just played my best every game, and I just, uh, got offers.
I would have said that I wouldn't say I got office, but I got more interest from colleges because they see my potential.
And even though you just said, you know, the ball is in my hands as much.
What were you doing to make yourself stand out to college coaches? Because obviously, you know, you gotta You gotta do something for them to notice you.
So what were you doing exactly for college? coaches to notice you even though you were in the star player on the team s.
So I was more of a spot up shooter.
Uh, dirty work on a glass.
I was just a team player.
I thought What are you wearing, like, a sweatshirt right now or what is that? It looks kind of looks kind of cool.
Not a lot, but, uh, my friend got a brand name stack of star.
What's called Stag? A star.
Back or star? What does that? What does that kind of mean? It was like stock your money.
Or like, star like, If you don't do it, do what you gotta do to stock your money.
Then you're gonna star.
They starve, starve.
I thought of a stack or star.
Okay, I was thinking like, you know, all these things going with, like, a team where either like, you know, playing a stack team or be a star.
Another team. That's what I felt.
But I know that's that's kind of cool, actually.
And when you were a role player, I guess when you were a middle school, you seem like a big guy like honestly, like I'm not gonna lie.
The reason I asked, I was told you were what's couple when I needed it for, like, the bottom line kind of thing.
And I will know the reason I asked you re classes because I thought you were, like, way skinnier than, uh like Like, I haven't met you, but you seem kinda kind of big.
So I'm assuming in a middle school.
What do you like? Super dominant? Yeah, middle school.
I was about 6162 So, yeah, I was I was really big in middle school, but I was skinny, but, uh, ST John's got me Maura big in the weight room.
I've just been in there all summer with them for a full on that in my last two years of Saint John.
So they really got me a better, better body looking.
And was that it all? Not like a culture shock, but was that I guess somebody you have to deal with where you know you're going from being the guy in middle school, You know, when you're in eighth grade and, uh, you're as tall as you know when you're like 6 ft and eighth grade.
Like I'm sure it's easy.
You know, you're going to high school as well.
You're going high school, and you're the guy played against your guys.
You're going to high school.
Planning is bigger, guys, that you've got a complete change, your role from being a star toe, being a role player s.
So how are we able toe handle that? Yes.
Oh, my freshman year.
I was on varsity.
Not in play a lot, but I watched.
I've seen how how big the guys where I seen where I gotta get.
So I just basically, just it was a learning a learning experience my freshman year, so yeah, but how are you able to handle, like, hold on? Like, you know, I I gotta take a step back.
I can't, you know, like I'm not gonna be the guy this year.
Was that maybe something that was hard on you? I wouldn't really say it was hard on me.
I just took that as motivation toe.
Get in the gym, stay in the gym and be ready.
My name is called, You know I'm not gonna live.
It's probably a dumb question.
But since you were getting offers, even though, you know you were doing stuff, as you said since you were kind of getting offers being a role player or would you rather, you know, get a ton of offers not, you know, doing I guess as much with the ball in your hands.
And it's kinda just playing a role.
Or would you rather get offers from by being a star player on the team and doing a ton more work? Well, I would say I'm blessed for what I got right now.
Um, this year, I should be more of the star on my team.
More of a leader.
I'm, uh, always player on my team, so I just feel like I just need to leave the guys, the young guys so they could be in my position where I'm in today, set them up for the same they want.
They want the same office I have.
So I just want to set them up for that.
Yeah, but I guess, like not even with offers, I guess you know, you know, offers cloud like all that, I guess, you know, respect from I guess, the country in a way.
Would you have to kind of get that from, you know, having, uh I guess, you know, lead a team completely or, you know, just kind of doing what you're doing and just adapting tell a role? Well, yeah, I'll say leading my team completely.
I don't really care about all that cloud stuff, but that doesn't mean anything.
As long as I'm getting to the next level and I'm showing everybody that I'm I'm one of the best in the country.
That's all I care about.
And why would you rather, uh, lead a team? Because at least you know, I was thinking about it like, let's say I get the same night offers or, you know, I guess, you know, ranking of the stars, whatever.
Regardless of what I did, I'd obviously all or do it doing less work, then doing more work.
So why would you kind of pick you on to do more work and lead a team like I need to do more work? I feel like it's only right.
I don't I don't really look like how people, but I would say I'm one of them, but if you're not really doing that people was getting any offer.
I feel like you need a work for every offer you get.
I feel like I've done that.
I worked for everything I got.
And when you were a freshman, since you said, you know, I have to work for everything I got, I guess where you kind of coming in? More like a guess.
There may be some sort of dog mentality.
Like, you know, I'm gonna do the dirty work, Dio I've got fresh. I guess it's underclassmen.
Like, did you kinda come in for those two seasons? You know, with a dog mentality like I'm gonna do the dirty work and, uh, you know, I'll do whatever it takes for our team to win.
So in practice on, I felt like, um, I had a chip on my shoulder planning against guys like Casey more so that's a Virginia right now.
Just guarding him every day in practice garden.
Devin Sa***e has just committed the JMU garden ish is guarding everybody had I feel like I had a chip on my shoulder to shoulder coach that I can get on the floor of my freshman year.
And, uh, you know, I mean, I was a freshman.
I had to guard These guys are, you know, top.
You know, they're all going d one some high major, some in major.
I think I would be scared out of my mind.
You know, I'm gonna try my best, but I don't know how how well I would do against them.
I mean, how were you able toe, you know, stop them and kind of hold your own? Yes.
So I had that mindset that I don't back down from anybody.
I feel like I could take him on my own.
Um, yeah, I just didn't back down in practice since you, since you have that mindset.
But I guess what happens when, you know, maybe a guy gets by you, Or let's say one of the guys, you know, dunked on you were just you know, it does something where, uh, you know, you weren't kind of able to hold your own stuff like that.
What goes through your mind right after one of those events take place? Yeah.
Next place next page mentality.
That's all I think about when I'm on the court.
If something happens, I get dunked on get crossed up.
Somebody made me fall.
It's the next place.
So you don't get you don't get, like, embarrassed or anything like that.
You just kinda guy immediately.
That's not That's not me.
I just think about the next play.
Coaches preached that at ST John's.
And would you want to say, Since you know, you're obviously a really, really good athlete.
I mean, I'm in everything.
You So that means you're good at, uh, well, you do.
But for me, because I'm telling basketball so but I make a mistake like I get I don't get down on myself like I'm not gonna, you know, just walk out of gym and like, crying or anything like that.
But I guess it's like in my mind, I'm, like, ****ed myself for doing that.
Like, you know, I just get nervous for making mistakes like that.
Would you say, since you know you're better and, uh, people know you're good.
Would you say that when you do make a mistake? It doesn't maybe matters much.
I mean, it matters to me, but it doesn't matter.
Um if I make a mistake, I gotta If I make him a snake to clean it up, do what I do, Whatever I gotta do to fix it, just learn from it.
And how good is that ST.
Johns? A program for basketball because I do know their football team is, uh is pretty good.
But just recently, you know, since I started to learn more about a lot of the basketball teams out on the nation, not just, you know, the ones that are ranked in the top 25.
I kind of discovered your school, and it seems like they are pretty good.
But talk about the program a little bit more and what makes them so great? Eso a while back they had guys like Chris, right then with Georgetown.
He was a McDonald's All Americans, Um, they got had guys like, um, Casey went through ST John's.
Um, Jeff Darwin.
He's at Rhode Island, you know, we just had a lot of good players come through ST John's filet.
I'm the next up next up in the program, but yeah, way were really good.
We made it to the championship in a slam.
It was a tournament in Myrtle Beach.
I forgot the name we played doorman from thinking from South Carolina, but we lost them in the championship will be beat teams like Morgan Park.
Um, yeah, we're just We're just really slept on program in the nation.
Feel like we're gonna make a lot of people of this year and has so ST John's has been, you know, a consistently great program, right? And walking All the people that you know that don't go to ST John's, go to other schools in the D.
And they said a young for all teams are good as well.
Not just good basketball, but also, you know, football layer is great as well.
Yeah, I feel like we have the best athletes in the world.
There's nothing else like it.
Um, I feel like everybody is talented, every sport, any sport, everybody's talented in the D. M.
Yeah, well, I'm not gonna say I agree, because I've never really gone there to check out the whole high school basketball scene.
But I think I probably interview at least one D.
V person today, and, uh, I keep finding more and more so I think.
But I understand this is questions like, why is everyone there good? And why are they all these good teams all in? Not like a smaller area at the same time.
It was all in 11 city like why is it like that? Yes.
So are trainers a really good out here? Strip the condition and trainers on court trainers? Everything is really good.
We had a lot of a lot of people come through the D M v like guys like Katie Michael Beasley.
So, yeah, I feel like it's just a pattern.
Like everyone's good.
Just learn from the learn from, uh, learn from the past.
Just add that to our game.
So, yeah, trainers help us with a lot.
And, ah, lot of guys.
I started asking this question because everyone asks the question.
What? What? I usually ask a player.
You know who you come all your game after? Who's gonna figure on NBA players? I usually get, you know, Anthony Davis and, uh, Kevin Durant, A good, um as well.
I says he's from the D M V.
You know, that's probably that you are, I guess, maybe look up to it.
I didn't even play for a team, Durant that somebody look up to and, uh, ma your game after? Yeah, so I would say, Yeah, I'm out of my game at the KT.
Um, when I was younger, I really like Katie. I used to wear his number.
I had all the Katie shoes, but also like Jason Tatum and Devin Booker.
I really like Tatum's footwork.
Like your shot fade aways.
I really shoot a lot of fade aways in the game.
Try to model my game at the Tatum for I watch a lot of Tatum and playing team Durant, have you If you met Kevin Durant before or has that not happened? I haven't met him face to face, but I've seen plenty of time.
Okay, I don't think I've actually I think I've seen him play in person once, but I don't remember.
I sound like a pie game.
Um, I I guess what's it like seeing in person? Because someone I did see a person with John Wall when I was in D.
I think he was one of the best players ever watched.
Actually, that he is is so fast.
Uh, How is it watching Kevin Durant? E mean, Katie? He's like, unguardable, fulfill, shoot over, you cross you up, get to the basket dunk when you e.
I feel like he's the best player in the NBA right now.
When he comes about to me, he's better than LeBron.
But Katie could do everything.
He's about 66 11 7 ft and he's playing like a guard.
So, yeah, he's doing everything.
Yeah, but the one thing, though, I mean, LeBron's like the Hulk.
Katie's kinda like me, you know, like I like I like Katie LeBron's like, almost like how I feel like you look right now.
So I don't know.
I think I think just like the body is very poor.
And I'm just like, I'm just a big LeBron guy and, you know, lebron, he caught former zone super team in a way, you know, we get those championships, but you know, he did with one in Cleveland.
Um, I don't know, man.
You know, Katie had to go to the Warriors to get that Get that.
I do respect Katie, and I mean, yeah, I don't know he's a crazy player as well, because he's just so calling.
Yeah, what you said, you know, plays like a guard like I don't know, I don't You could do it.
And you don't realize how tall we are pleased to have in person on since, you know, I think I was in eighth grade.
I soft basketball players like up close.
So he's like a giant on.
He looks like on TV like he's a guard, so he's definitely, uh, he could be considered the number one player in the world today, I would say.
And, uh, let's see.
So all of the teams and DVR Good.
I know it's ST John's. Gonzaga.
DeMatha Uh, Paul The sixth or the fifth? Uh, my Mr Warner, I don't think I'm missing on Yeah, out of those four powerhouses, would you have to say that ST John's is the most slept, slept on out of those four powerhouses? And why, Yeah, I would say we're the most slept on every year we make it to the Final Four, but way don't we don't get past that, but I feel like we're just knocking on the door right there.
I feel like we could make it to the championship next year when it.
But it is very tough in the devastated city plan against those four powerhouses almost every night.
And I'm Yeah, where most slept on for On how often? Or how does it get the schedule work? Do you play them on each two times a season? Regular season? Yeah.
Two times this season.
So one time at our place and one time I their place and we'll probably meet whoever like, makes it toe.
The Final four were part played him at American University.
That's that's a really great environment.
So, yeah, we're part will play at least 11 or two teams at least three times each season.
And why do you Why would you play them at American universities that were, like the state championships or something like that? S o r.
Conference championship takes place at American University.
And what makes that the atmosphere during your conference championships, So great.
So, yeah, everybody in the D.
M. V comes out to that to that one.
That one arena, um, way played her two nights back to back.
So every day is packed.
I remember I got in the game last year.
It was just fans everywhere.
We had Roy Williams on the sideline.
He was front road.
But it was It's packed, nothing like it.
And when you saw Roy Williams sidelined, I'm sure, obviously never got to you.
But what was the first thing you thought in your mind? Like, Wow, where Williams.
You was like, you know, I know guys that are probably going to end up at a school, so he just kind of, you know, he's just Roy Williams to me.
Like, what do you think? We just saw him? Yeah, when I see him, I was amazed, but I didn't really put too much focus on it.
I was just focused on the game, To be honest, I've just seen him.
I felt like, um, yeah, he was just there to recruit.
I was just there to play, so it wasn't really nothing.
And it seems like you guys do have are super super good team coming into this season.
What are your expectations and how do you think you're gonna handle out that new role? And so the new role I'm gonna have to be a leader.
I'm going to step up transitioning from last year to this year is a big transition.
I'm the oldest guy on the team in Shane Lancaster.
You know, Shane? Yeah, Shane Lancaster and Logan Blair's three juniors.
Um, no, we don't.
We have no senior, So yeah, we have to make that big transition and lead the young guys.
Okay? I don't know what this is. Shane Lane counselors.
He played on teams around as well.
Yeah, he plays with Yeah.
Is that kind of build a certain chemistry with you guys, you know, to top players both playing on Team Durant together.
Just how much is playing a U basketball with one of your teammates Benefit your team.
So, yeah, I would say this summer's when it benefit us a lot.
We got more, more of a connection transitioning over the ST John's for a high school season.
So, yeah, we just bonded mawr on the court, and it's really, um it's really like, look at our game.
See how we can play with each other and see how we're gonna make an impact.
We're going back to ST John's.
And since we just mentioned teams around, um, what do you like about that? Or that you program.
We've been playing ball.
Um, so it's my first year at team Durant.
I really like how they I wouldn't say.
Yeah, I really like how they, like, put you out there, um, promote you.
I feel like it was a big, um It was a big change for me playing with team to rent, and I just I just like their vibe.
I really just just like paying the rent. Uhh.
Teammates, all that coaches here.
I'm glad you said, uh, you know, they do agree putting us out there and promoting us because I was gonna say, I want a place on team Durant.
It seems like they all got such good, uh, just getting media, like, every kick out a mix tape, you know, even sending that picture, like, most guys don't have horizontal picture themselves.
But, you know, I would like everybody from TV and has, like, the greatly like, great pictures of themselves, you know? He's unbelievable.
Uh, do they really stress, you know, giving you guys a ton of exposure and a ton of media? Yeah, for sure.
So actually, they have their own media crew, so the media crew will be at every tournament, every practice, just take pictures, take videos to put it out there for other people to see.
Does the media crew of any interviewers, though, Or the just, uh, just, you know, guys of the camera.
I'm not sure this is my first year.
I don't I don't I don't know if they do interview.
Well, I mean, they obviously don't, cause you probably would have.
You probably would have known. I'm gonna see them.
And, uh, man, I actually, actually, I I actually I think there's a new question, but when you're a practice and you have, you know So there's media people at practice.
Sometimes I every here and there will be immediate people have practice, but I don't think this year we had any.
We didn't have immediate crew at our price, but at the tryouts we did.
Now they look at the combine we had.
It was immediate people there, but at every tournament they were there.
You know, I turn them into the games.
I'm sure usedto getting a lot of media attention or at least seeing a lot of media all around the you know, based on sidelines, just all around the gym.
But you're in a practice or a tryout.
And you saw media there without something new to you.
And that would be weird because, you know, you're not in a packed gym with fans where it dies. Noticeable.
You know, you're kind of in a quiet gym with just some kids in, uh, au coaches.
So was that Ah, kind of weird knowing, like, literally, the spotlight is on me. And you could feel it.
But I don't really I don't really focus on, like, the cameras on all that.
I'm just there to play.
Just just produce.
I don't really focus.
What? People in the baselines recording.
If I get a mixtape after the game, that would be cool for me.
But I'm just playing.
I'm just out there playing, but, you know, you said again mixed hip after a game.
You know, it's gonna be cool for me, Do you? Do you enjoy at least getting getting mixed tapes and, uh, getting photos? You take it and all that stuff Or is that something? You know, you just kind of get it awesome.
If I don't, I don't care what you say, E.
I mean, yeah, I like, um, with media people are doing for me.
So blessing for what? I'm taking a time out.
Their data make me a mix tape or take pictures of me.
But I'm just out there playing.
And did you have any, uh, you games usually with Team Durant.
So, yeah, recently, we just finished up a tournament out in Springfield, Virginia, called the I 95 Coalition.
So that was our last tournament.
We made it to the championship, but we lost.
It was a really tough game.
I feel like we fought, but we didn't.
We didn't come out with a w, um, real quick about that tournament.
I thought it was like I thought it was a league. It's a tournament.
I actually was a league league.
So we will have games every weekend for your Yeah, it was against, you know, like all the elite AU teams, right? Yeah.
That was, I guess, maybe similar almost to your thio way is the conference of the W was the W A c w w c or C.
W W W C a c w w w c a c Okay.
Was it at all similar to the W W W W C a e Alright, It za w CAC uh, was maybe it was similar to the W c A.
Since you know that conference, all the top teams in D m B and then now you're playing 9 95 Correlation League.
And that's, you know, all the top AU teams all playing against each other.
So were those kind of very similar Yes, I would say players that played in I 95 Coalition.
They went toe maybe a school in the WC a C or like another big conference.
And we just all they just all joined in, like one.
A few teams, or maybe like different teams and just play.
We just compete against each other.
So basically, everybody in I 95 coalition played in the toughly.
I want to say it's the WCC, but we got a couple of a couple of WCC kids that was planning on a 95 coalition, so we basically got a taste of what we're going to see this upcoming season.
And who did you are.
What team did you end up losing against Team called DnB Sports Academy.
Oh, actually, I don't know that I I know.
What is the prospect? You there is a problem.
Yeah, probably. I know them.
I know new world basketball.
Then there's you guys.
And is it team thrill or take a, uh A So the d c.
Premier New World Prospect University Sports Academy.
Um, Billy Pride came down for 11 weekend.
It was a lot of different things I didn't really know the names of, but yeah, that's the ones I just named those the ones that I know back and remember And was your team Was it pretty much because I know I know Judy Men's joy.
He joined later on, right? Yeah, But besides him was a team pretty much consistent the whole summer.
Yeah, I would say we were consistent the whole summer.
If we all had, if we travel, we would have been one of the top 16 teams in the nation.
Uh, playing with Darren Buchanan.
Me and him in the paint was we were just unstoppable.
So I feel like we had a if we had to travel season, we would have been We would have been really good.
Yeah, real quick. We'll tell you.
Actually, I'm gonna have you.
Can you Can you refresh your page real quick? Just kind of lagging a little bit.
So it's refresh and, uh, the top right back in.
All right, guys.
Hoping right back while we wait for him.
Let me give some Let me give some shout outs.
So shout out Thio.
Why? I guess you guys are the weirdest names child toe.
Not that dump dump aunt for the 50 ticket tip.
And also shout toe another another were named by Do you like your profile picture of Benny the ball child Tino Tequila with the 50 ticket tip.
And then also the final shot out lows Chianti 6969 Appreciating my boy hit me with the fall of you guys have some weird names on this app Anyways, he's back.
Let's let's continue this interview.
So it was kind of like it was kind of glitch in a little bit.
So, uh, yeah, just in case.
But I want you to add you.
So you do believe that you guys would have been the top 16 you team in the country and why we would have been one of the way had a lot of pieces.
Darren Buchanan, Rob Lawson.
Really good point.
Judith joined us late, but yeah, we have had a season.
Would have been really good.
Um, way had a lot of pieces.
And what do you think you guys maybe did right in the I 95 Coalition league toe lead you guys to the championship game for like, we played as a team, played the defense.
We just had heart.
Um, we had a really good coach, Angelo Hernandez feel like you were a really good team.
And he said You guys played as a team.
However, you know, star studded lineup.
I mean, how are you guys able to figure out like some of us is gonna be role players or we're all gonna you know, pretty much the same amount of points every game.
How are you guys able to figure out being all stars? Like, you know, we're all gonna figure out a way to play together as a team.
Yeah. So we are really good.
We took the We just canceled out all the rankings and stuff.
We didn't really worry about that.
So we just said that we're gonna play as a team.
Everybody can score.
We're gonna play as a team, share the ball.
And this one is when the game was a team.
So basically, we were just preaching that team.
Uh, team mentality? Yeah.
Got us W's, but we couldn't.
Didn't come out with a W the championship.
What? What did you guys? What do you think you did wrong in that of that championship game? And was to be the biggest thing you learned from it? Um, I wouldn't say we really did anything wrong.
We played really hard.
Really good that game.
The other team was just a better team that night.
And going to your crew process now? Um, how has it been? And when did it all start? Eso really picked back up June 15th, where coaches can reach out to us 2022.
So really, really picked up that day.
And did you get your first offer? Was it freshman year, or was it before freshman year? It was the summer going into my freshman year So I really I wasn't a freshman yet.
