because my and with that, we welcome back.
Once again it's forecaster news with myself at arm Rick, Matt Brooks in the center square and joining us coming in hot d****d in next year.
The news the news is official will be all expected.
We obviously been all we've all been reporting on this.
We've been talking about it for months, just waiting for the official announcement of Ah, Steve Nash being hired as the Brooklyn Nets head coach.
Initial, uh, initial takes on something that obviously none of us none of us had on our minds.
It's when it's a big win and on unexpected When I said, you know, out of nowhere, RKO look, it seems like it's out of left field, but it isn't as far out of left field as you.
You know, I think when you actually think about it and you think about the relationships there with Sean Marks and complain on the sons with that ash and then Steve Kerr or not Steve Kerr, but the Warriors, him being on Steve Kerr staff and working with K d.
I saw him at putting out the videos earlier, and I'm like like he put out the video of them working together.
I'm you know it like that's exactly what I was thinking like This is a higher that, Ah, I want to say they had this in mind.
They just were sitting on it and the Brooklyn Nets did a good job of just, like, not leaking information.
But they had to have had these conversations with Mr Nash weeks ago.
Wants to go, maybe.
And, uh, it's a food fruition.
That's what foods study confirmed that march.
They knew March that they were going to this.
I'm like, That's Sky Sean Marks is this guy's He's too good man.
He's still good to keep this under wraps.
Those some of the commentary was like Good to hear the good to see that Sean Marks can still keep some things under the close to the vest with this kind of stuff.
You think Matt like e mean going on Lee back to march, right? So when you're having these conversations, we know like Tyler got thrown out there because it's connection with Kyrie Irving and the worst of other names, including, like a Mark Jackson who didn't have ties at the time to Golden State when Katie was there.
But this is the nature getting thrown out, and even they said the Katie maybe had some support behind Mark Jackson.
But that conversation probably happens, Right? Made the time of signing with between Cairo and Kitty, they go, Hey, throughout the names who maybe would you be interested in if we know if we're looking for our coaching change at some point along the way, and this gets thrown into the mix and you start to do the research? You? I said, I love the player development side of things that Steve Nash is bringing their from his time in Golden State, obviously seekers about as well respected a coach around the N B A.
As you could want as well.
So in terms of getting some some some tutelage and some understanding about getting into the mix as a head coach, you feel like he has some background there.
And maybe the footnote here is a job phony on this coaching staff as well.
So familiarity and can maybe help.
You know, Steve Nash, learn on the job little bit.
Yeah, I think Jacque Vaughn is like the big thing for me like my favorite part of all of this because I think that there's just the stuff that he's picked up.
I expect them to run like a really lovely offense, just with lovely off, get you some lovely offense with her.
Mike D'Antoni, Don Nelson routes that Steve Nash has like that.
That part, I think, is gonna be really fun, and we'll jump off the paper right away.
Uh, but the thing that I'm really excited about it is that they're keeping Von just because he has that experience with the little things in coaching rotations, adjustments, timeouts, all these little things that are honestly gonna come over time for Nash.
He has somebody right there who he could work with hand in hand.
Take advice from, um, you know, even have situations where if something let's say the game is slipping out of the nets hand and you know this 10 point lead has ballooned to a 15 point lead.
You have fun, say okay like we need to call time out right now like those of the situation.
But I think he's gonna be really valuable.
They're paying him to be very valuable so that no highest paid assistant coach in the league.
I think they almost approached this as hand in hand.
Um, let's get to that on that note because it's a four year contract for National Obviously.
Ah, I think about one a year that mentioned this over on Social Media about If it goes well here in the quote short term, then this could be the advantage of keeping Kevin Durant around.
Maybe Kyrie is well beyond these contracts that they're on.
But in the event that even say they get away from this group, including Steve Nash is the head coach.
Is it nice to have Jacque Vaughn there? Maybe, say, this could be our long term guy as well.
For five years down the line, we could find Jacques Vaughn right back in a head coaching position, just a game of the extension of the safety net for the Brooklyn Nets.
As an organization overall, it's it's hedging your bets.
I think I tweeted out how important it is that they did this.
And, ah, it's insurance.
It's built in insurance, right? Job on is a guy that now we saw what he did in the bubble.
We saw what he did, even at the, um, the end of the beginning of the season when we went beat the Lakers in the Staples Center when he took on the interim job and we saw that these guys respect him, they they hear his voice, they follow his lead and he's already got that, like with this team with the guys on this team, and I was lobbying for him to get the head coaching job.
But I understood also that, like he wasn't the flashy higher.
He wasn't the splash play and in, I guess these last four or five months.
He was never in the plan to be the head coach, but he was always somewhere in the plan, and I'm glad that they paid him.
I'm glad that they're keeping him, but I'm more.
We're so glad that they did.
The splashy NB a New York higher in Steve Nash and Steve Nash will be ours.
He has no prior head coaching experience.
We can't look at another team and say Hey, this is what he used to run with the Timberwolves or this is what he did with the Sixers.
This guy's coming in and it's a blank slate.
So we create everything that we want to create.
We create the next culture we create.
What? This is gonna be an obviously Katie Kyrie.
Those guys had a big say in all of this.
I love that Jacque Vaughn got the respect that he deserves.
For what? What he did.
Ah, he's not going anywhere.
Another team would have definitely taken a look at him as a head coach.
And it just it makes me super happy to see that he's gonna be back.
And Nash is a beautiful basketball mind.
He's respected by everyone in the N B A players, former players.
And now he's gonna get the lead, the Brooklyn Nets.
And he's got a guy like jog on right next to him as like his right hand man.
And it's gonna be successful right away.
The expectations are high, I said, You know, I've been wanting this for the Nets for a long time.
I've watched the Nets and has been quiet for us, and as a fan, you watch and you root and you stay loyal because you know, one day it's gonna turn around.
You know, one day it is gonna line up and you're gonna have the big name players.
You're gonna have the head coach and we're following the n B.
A model. You land the big name free agents.
You go higher the first year, coach.
Let's go win a championship.
And I think that's everybody's plan.
Uh, the Nets are looking to be the top team in the East, and we're looking at the current East right now.
The Bucks air down 02 to the heat.
If they're the big is baddest team in the East.
There's a lot of opportunity for us right now.
Yeah, you just did.
You said, Matt, I'd say that Neil, going into next season, you're looking at Eastern Conference Finals, Brooklyn Nets, Boston Celtics.
I think Celtics have taken, you know, that leap forward.
You soften Tatum and it's this team.
It just seems like they were ready for this playoff.
The Miami sheet have shown that they're way more prepared, maybe than anticipated to, but I'd say that everyone is coming down into a group as opposed to necessarily think Boston maybe is doing it. But Miami.
I don't think it's quite where you know they didn't go up to a level to get to Milwaukee.
I think Milwaukee came down to came.
I was coming down to a level to last name seems to get their ah footnote about the job of on a piece of it is there is more of a humorous that I think that I was thinking about was the Nets kind of made it a point to get to let Kenny Atkinson go before you had the Nets make the playoffs and maybe have him shows You show too much where it would have been harder to fire him after he had some success.
Is there? Is there a little bit of like, Ah, man shock value? Actually, you did way more than we anticipated.
Here you want you want five and three in the bubble.
You went, you know you want the playoffs.
You changed up some things from a coaching standpoint, and I think great scenario is that he made He is now giving Nash at least a little bit of a footprint off some of the adjustments that you may be would have needed to think about early in next season, and now you already kind of know them with the island in the high post is a really easy ones of point to and say, OK, look, maybe already unlocked something here with some of these guys that we can now know, as opposed to having to have that little bit of learning curve and wins and losses aren't gonna be that as important as they are for other teams for Brooklyn next year.
But if it just feels interesting and I may be wonder if it's high priced as assistant coaches, he maybe there's also an opportunity of other teams maybe come knocking to Brooklyn and are looking to acquire Jacque Vaughn services in a head coaching role somewhere else.
Yeah, I think also one of the wide I first, I just don't know who is on the roster next year.
So it looks like that hard for me to step was, this is the whole Pat now is the as Spencer did what he put it.
You you wanted a third star and you know Steve Nash is your third star.
Do you think that the hiring of Steve Nash is the We move forward holding firm with what we have on this roster, it doesn't impact it all.
Is that what does this move impact the off season at all for this team? Because I start to immediately think like you said, um, in the vein of what he ran as a player underneath D'Antoni.
If I'm gonna read the tea leaves about the system, some players feel like they blend very nicely into that.
And there's a couple of guys that maybe their stock drops a little bit on this roster.
If you're looking to run a more up tempo, quick transition offense, these too early to tell.
I think we gotta wait so the playoffs and see what happens on DSI.
If anybody makes a rash move, I think they're so gonna be start hunting.
I mean, look, I appreciate went in what he said in terms of it, Um, I always appreciate with somebody say that about what he's talking about.
I love I like everything has to say he's candid.
He also is somebody that, like he would if something was to come like happen and a guy would come available.
That's a third star something, really.
He'd be in that deal like I just that's kind of where I'm at right now with that, um so I think it's too early to tell.
I think they're absolutely going to be start hunting if the market provides that they're going to be doing and it just they have to do it honestly, It's like you have to at least take a look because these guys don't fit perfectly.
No matter who you have in place.
I just think there's 11 too many guys that need the ball.
Just there is like a small fringe move to be made at the very weeks.
There's some 11 because they say there's some level of these.
It feels like the team maybe has a two team construction right now, right? Like second unit entirely and first unit entirely.
Think about maybe Caris Levert leading a second year as opposed to being in the starting line up alongside Kyrie.
Or however they're going to tackle that.
But the overlap blend and get a little bit weird when you're talking about the way even Spencer did.
Moody's game right comparatively and working alongside KD and Kyrie.
That's a lot of hands and not a lot of basketballs to deal to work around.
I think like as fans were looking at the team we had and the team we potentially have, and we're just trying to like Master Thuh like I'm looking at this Nets organization now like this is completely different than we've ever dealt with.
From Joe Sigh to Sean Marks to now, Steve Nash is head coach.
They're not done.
Don't count them out.
Don't try and assume what they're going to do because they put the league on notice.
Multiple time is right going into the bubble.
People were saying why the Nets have been showing up like, Who are these guys that the Nets are fielding? The Nets might not win a game in the bubble, and then they shocked people, right? Jamal Crawford was supposed to be the biggest name that the Nets had going into the bubble.
He was supposed to drop 40 for the Nets.
He played five minutes.
So I'm just looking at Sean Marks and Joe sign this organization right now like they're not done and the MBA isn't done so like you have to get through the playoffs.
Got to go to the draft like there's there's a lot more on the horizon.
And if they have an opportunity to make a move or bring in a third star or who knows, like just get the right pieces for Katie and Kyrie like they're going to do that and I'm just going to sit back and wait for it because I didn't know this was gonna happen today.
I don't know what's gonna happen next.
I think we are going to see some changes with this team.
I think guys like Joe Hair are locked in, but I mean, there's other guys on this team that might not be with us when we go into the 2020 21 season, and that's fine.
Like in Sean Marks we trust and Joseph I we trust so far.
They pulled off Katie and Kyrie last summer.
This this Ah, At the end of the summer, they pull off Steve Nash.
They might have another trick.
They might pull another rabbit out of the hat, and I'm just going to sit and wait on it because as currently constructive, constructive.
We had a competitive team, right? We beat the Lakers, we beat the books.
We beat the Clippers in the bubble.
No, we didn't take a single game from the Raptors.
But that's basically because, like, it was over, man.
Like, you know, these guys were done, But those guys aren't like the guys that we just watched in Orlando.
Like, half those guys are gonna be with the team and they're gonna look for every way to improve this team.
They're gonna look at the market.
They're gonna look at the draft there, look at every option.
They have to put the best players around.
Katie and Kyrie that fit with Katie and Kyrie so that we can make a championship run.
It is no longer about favoritism or the old regime nets or who was here like, No, we're all the way into the new era now, Matt, you did you? I don't know.
I don't be presumptuous.
You raise an eyebrow about what I said about where Caris Levert fits into this lineup.
Are you? Is it presumptive to you that if assuming he's on this roster, that he automatically is plugged into the starting lineup? Because I again, I wonder about just the best utilization of these of these players that are on there right now? I think cares problem.
I actually feel stronger about carrot being here just because of Steve Nash having like roots with him and Katie, He just like it just it's very clear that they have, like, a riel.
We're really trying to build up a brain trust of, like, friends and and people that respect each other.
And I just think, uh, you know, I I think that Paris is gonna be in that mix just because of Katie.
And now, now, Steve National.
The thing I was actually looking at was that Nash was trying to bring in.
Ah, Dirk Nowitzki, Assistant coach.
I don't know if you guys know that.
That's what I just saw come up with my phone and I'm just it.
I don't think it's gonna happen, but, like, Well, don't be Adventures, man going on like save the day.
Well, oddly enough, it's like a personal thing I like about right.
Like the jerks, a great a great great basketball player probably is a great basketball minds.
The only reason I would hesitate around that is because I go.
Who would he be teaching on the nets right now? Like you wouldn't go? I may.
I may I have my best.
Maybe he's gonna teach, share down about a little having that little midrange jumper Gay, but like applying his skill set and what his experience it's on the court would be like.
But I'm fine with that, though.
I think there's something about when we talked about ways we could get out of here on this about coaches and D'Antoni's You gonna leave Houston and that maybe he's in the mix.
You know, Tyler, who's had some experience and head coaching jobs.
He's assistant now.
The re tread experience throwing out the Van Gundy throwing out Jeff Van Gundy as a possibility for the Brooklyn Nets job seemed just so insane to me, given where he is in his career.
I know some people have issues with about zero coaching experience and then getting an opportunity like this, but I like the turnover in the league.
I like getting in fresh ideas and a fresh mind and Steve Nash and what he what wrinkle is he gonna bring sure we can.
We can think about where he came from as a player under any certain coaches, but he's gonna have some of his own ideas, and it was the same with Jacque.
Vaughn did second coaching stint for him, but he had his own thought about this roster different from Kenny Atkinson.
If you brought in tow Derek, I'm sure he'd have some interesting ideas about things to do, like the same way that I like seeing Turnover and players around the league, and we get excited to watch Mitchell and Murray going at it in that series.
This is what I want to see.
I want to see what the next wave of head coaches look like around the league to complement Nick Nurse and Brad Stevens and then the guys that have been doing over the last couple of years.
I got three things and then I'll pass it the mountain we can get out. One.
This is the model, right? Steve Kerr gets hired its's first coaching opportunity.
He goes on to win the championship.
Didn't Nick Nurse win it last year in his first year as a head coach? Get an opportunity like this is the model in the n B A.
That we're seeing their Khanna gist following the mold on in the next mind that could be the great mind to win a championship.
And then second I said on here he is ours.
This is like a new era.
I love that we're not just gonna put Mark Jackson in here or tie Lewin here that have been head coaches in other places.
And then third, I have to speak on because people decided to make this a thing about race.
Like Trevor Booker came out and jumped out of the window, talking about all theirs qualified African American coaches Row.
What are you talking about? Like? That's not what this higher was based on.
And it isn't Stephen Ashe getting the job because of his white privilege.
It's a fit its relationships.
It's Katie and Kyrie Sanya.
He's the guy and not saying it as like Tyronn Lue and Mark Jackson and even Gregg Popovich, who now nobody's talking about, get thrown into the mix as the next Nets Nets coach.
There was a plan in place they had this done months ago, or at least thought about it months ago.
He was the guy months ago, so all that happened was, you know, they made it happen, and Jacque Vaughn got slided into the, you know, head assistant job, and they paid him his money.
But it wasn't ever a thing of Jacque Vaughn getting it because he's black.
Or maybe we need to hire a black guy, then throw all that **** out like I'm tired of hearing that I'm seeing people talk about.
I saw Richard Jefferson speak on it.
I saw Jay Williams speak on it like this isn't this has nothing to do with black or White.
This has to do with basketball and these guys Risp, Specht, Steve Nash.
They have a relationship with them.
They've worked with them, and he is now officially the 23rd head coach of the Brooklyn Nets, and I think he's more than the right guy for the job.
I hope that comes true when we actually see it all together on the court.
I'm glad you brought that up because there was also Stephen A.
Smith brought it up and he went.
He went to that idea of like white privilege and everything that's going on.
We've always had public and private conversations around.
So much was going on the country and it's important to be aware of that.
But his logic of that, I mean, you broke it down perfectly.
Cases, not more to say about They have a connection with this guy. They know him.
If ever there was an opportunity to say We want to go out and hire a particular black head coach or a former player that we like, it's all predicated on on what Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving comfortable with.
So then they're making this choice.
This isn't it just It blew my mind that I maybe didn't blow my mind cause it's about Pop.
We've been hearing Greg Popovich to Brooklyn for months, and not one person said All Pops getting looked at because he's white.
Like this is something that people decided to throw out there today.
Yeah, no, that's not it.
Yeah, and it's not like he's like like white like ****ytics guy that, like, does what I like Born itself about Africa.
He's a Canadian guy.
He's an international guy, like he's Steve Nash is Canadian, for crying out loud.
How you gonna knock a Canadian? We are watching Steve Nash play, and I saw somebody tweet there, like in Steve Nash is defense.
He's pretty much an African American.
He's got a black car.
He's in there with the African American community in some way, way higher, like No, no, no, Don't say that.
Like, no, Steve is good.
This is Steve is good ways to qualify.
Steve Nash in these different ways.
We can just say, it's OK.
It's OK that he got hired.
He's great, he's great.
But I mean, it's good.
It's good that those discussions are happening and like something to be wary of.
But, like, you know, uh, yeah, again, it's Steve Nash.
I don't I don't I don't click bait version of those things right of those conference.
Yeah, we're all excited and like, I think we'll agree, though there's still probably more to come for Brooklyn.
So the next step is sit back and Julie yourself.
I hate to, as a giant van reference anyone that, ah, that I keep McPherson knows.
But get your popcorn ready, right? Cause there's probably some things coming down the pike for the Nets in terms of roster moves and different things like that.
Check out Matt Brooks, you that you had a podcast that's probably out right now, are basically irrelevant.
I did what I did a whole 10 minutes on Gregg Popovich yesterday, and I was like, All right, wait a minute on pop versus job on the ask came out of nowhere.
So So So So I have a whole Spurs overview.
I'm doing a Rockets Lakers preview later.
Ah, so a lot of general stuff, but I'll be doing this this Nets, you know, Nets, Steve Nash stuff.
Probably all weekend.
He'll be getting there, Keith McPherson talking.
Mets will have this thing going on.
I've got that we got, We got nets, You're gonna get all the perspectives, friends.
So diving on that, check back with us here on SportsCastr news.
We're talking all things, eh? NBA playoffs Roll on.
Exciting times for Brooklyn will catch up with you fellas soon.
