It begins on Thursday Night Football Tomorrow.
Onley at my bookie.
Let's do this thing.
All right, let's get into it.
Browns versus Ravens.
I am dead inside.
Um, we have some mass hysteria in the city.
People are upset, People are mad.
People are calling for bakers starting job.
People are calling for Odell to be traded and it's only Wednesday after a week one of Brown's disappointing loss versus the Baltimore Ravens.
Um, let's get right into it.
Baker Mayfield was disappointing.
I think that's an understatement.
He had to throw the ball 39 times.
Um, just over 50% pass completion, barely over.
Ah, 100 yards, another pick.
At least he had a touchdown in there, so that's a good news.
He's 1 to 1 on touchdown to interception ratio.
It was an ugly one, and people are starting to write off.
You listen to sports talk radio at from any point, you know Sunday night through today and they're talking about case.
Keenum should be the starter.
Baker is not ready.
He's a one read quarterback.
He can't get on. The same page is Odell.
He doesn't know the playbooks to fancies offenses to complicated.
He's a bust of a number one pick.
Why didn't they take Lamar? Why didn't they take Josh Allen? Well, first, let's pump the brakes on that take, because let's flash back to 2018.
In March April around the draft, you folks wanted Sam Donald, and the reason that Brown's Twitter is doing this, and the reason why the Internet is doing this. Baker Mayfield.
You know, Socks Baker Mayfield blows.
He's not the quarterback we need.
A new guy tour is because the Internet lives three years in the past, right? We see it all the time.
We see it in basketball.
We see it in baseball, the Internets just 33 years behind modern day.
So the people that were Baker naysayers, I knew this was gonna happen.
I had a feeling that this would happen if there was a bump in Baker's development or a sop****re slump last year where the people that desperately wanted Sam Donald and then there were people that you know, really wanted Josh Allen to a couple Josh Rosen guys that were out there.
Baker was not the favorite amongst Browns fans to be picked in 2018 and the pick wasn't thought too highly of.
Besides, when Tyrod Taylor struggled in, Baker went in there and had that magical Thursday Night football game versus the Jets in 2018.
So I feel like the reason that a lot of Browns fans are kind of setting themselves back three years here is because they didn't want Baker to begin with.
They wanted Sam.
Donald. They wanted to actually see Baker.
Mayfield, go to Miami somewhere warm.
He was ****y at Oklahoma.
He upset our hometown.
You guys know how crazy Ohio State is about the Buckeyes? Baker Mayfield ruined that.
He planted the flag in the middle of Ohio Stadium.
Right on the, uh Oh, that didn't sit well with a lot of people.
So now people are going back toe all of that.
Baker was just a charade.
Baker didn't play any good defense in his in college.
It was the big 12.
Everything was tailor made for him.
We're all the way back there.
We've regressed to.
There were, in reality to me.
And if you go back and watch the game, I'm going to tell you why here in just a second, Baker Mayfield isn't as bad as you guys were all making them out to be.
He didn't do as bad as you thought.
And I know it all comes down in the National Football League.
Toe wins and losses.
That's why do Sean Kaiser was out of here in oh, in 16 because do Sean Kaiser made a couple of good throws that season.
He scored a couple of touchdown passes in the and 16 season, but the fact of the matter is he was the quarterback.
That was Oh, in 16 so you had to replace him.
I understand that it all comes down to winning and losing games and making those plays that win or lose games.
And Baker Mayfield didn't do that last year, and he certainly didn't do that on Sunday.
But what I'm trying to plead with you is this for the people that are out there saying that he can't read defenses, he got ripped apart by Baltimore.
I wanted to re watch the game before this show to give you guys, uh, drive by drive.
Breakdown of what? What went down? What went wrong.
And this is going to sound exactly like making excuses for Baker Mayfield.
And I hate to be that guy I hate to be.
Excuse guy Baker Mayfield fan.
You know, I saw a funny tweet, somebody tweeted underneath of a baker Mayfield slander tweet, and it was like, Oh, he used the first round pick.
He broke the rookie touchdown record.
You guys were just willing toe write him off and somebody quote tweeted and said, Yeah, you know, a Baker May on account that's called Baker Mayfield fan isn't going to be the most objective thing in the world.
That's not what I'm trying to dio.
What I'm trying to do is give you an example of what went wrong on Sunday, how the Browns can fix it and how you can get out of your own head of trapping yourself in this bubble.
That Baker Mayfield sucks and that Baker Mayfield needs to go.
So let me do that for you right now.
The first drive was weird.
He moved the ball wants and had had that bad read.
It was a tipped pass into interception bad read last year.
Baker and another pick our hearts, all ***ulatively dropped.
When that happened.
In my opinion, it looked like it might hit the ground.
I was hopeful that that would be one of those that was overturned right when it happened, but it didn't.
Okay, so what next drive was the fake punt? We know how that worked out.
Jamie Dillon fumbled.
That was an idiotic called by Kevin Stefanski.
The Ravens went back and score So the third drive is a 75 yard touchdown drive with a missed kick.
So after on your first drive, you threw an interception early, and on your second drive, you fumbled.
Ah, fake punt in your own territory.
By the time the miskick the first missed extra point happens, the score is 10 to 6.
You're in the game against the team that won the division last year and is a Super Bowl contender this year.
After three pretty bad drives, Baker puts together a 75 yard drive and a touchdown pass.
I'll take it the fourth drive.
He gets sacked and has the 4th and 41.
Nonsense, because the penalties, the penalty that looked like last year that slowed the hell out of the game.
That was nonsense.
Just I feel like that was first game jitters.
4th and 41. That was horrible.
And then the fifth drive, You have the Opiate J drop and the cyber miss and at that point that killed the game.
So if you go back and watch those first five drives, Baker looked OK.
They were in the game.
It was 10 to 6 and Some of you guys want his head.
Somebody. You guys were coming for his job.
That missed field goal killed the game.
It was a 14 point swing.
When Cyber missed the 40 yarder, it gave the Ravens short field.
They were able to score before going into the half, and then they got the ball coming out of the half, so they were able to score again.
That was a game killer.
When you when that happens, when you let a team score before half and then they get the ball.
I would love to see the ****ytics on this.
And if anyone has them, please tweet at me at Nick Payton, 12 always tweet The show at PEDO might take.
You're gonna lose when that happens.
When a team scores back to back, they score.
They go in the locker room and then they score again.
Chances are you're probably gonna lose.
I hate when that happens, but if you go back and watch the game.
Baker did his job at the beginning of the game.
At that point, with the 14 point swing happened, the Ravens have 24 points now.
Now you're playing from behind big time.
You're not running the ball.
You abolish the game plan.
Nick Chubb fumble.
That's another killer you're not using. Cream Hunt.
You're not using chub.
All the wide zone play action stuff goes out the window because you're down huge.
Baker's airing it out **** near 40 times like we saw last year, and you get yourself into a rut, and to me, you can't.
So all that excluded and all the first game stuff excluded.
You can't get rid of Baker Mayfield this year, and you can't bench him for Case Keenum.
Because of this, that's what got this franchise toe one and 31.
It wasn't Hugh Jackson.
It wasn't Sashi Brown.
It was ac***ulation of this fan base doing the thing that they do best.
And that's chasing quarterbacks and chasing players out of this town and out of this city before they have a chance to succeed.
We've seen it time and time again.
This city has no patience, and they refused to let a guy properly develop.
We saw it with Brady Quinn.
We saw it with Johnny Manziel, who self sabotaged himself slightly and a plethora of other quarterbacks.
The second of these guys losing game, the fans in the stands to start chanting for someone else.
We saw it with Brian Hoyer.
He was winning games.
He started struggling.
But Johnny, Johnny, Johnny Chance grew louder and louder in that first energy stadium.
Each and every game.
The reporters were continually asking Mike petting, Hey, if Johnny continues to our if, if if Brian Hoyer continues to struggle here, you got to think about putting Johnny in right? What's the status on Johnny? Is he ready? How's the development looking? And we just rushed the next guy in here every time.
What do you guys want? You want Case Keenum to go out there and be another two year bridge until we get the fourth or fifth pick because you're not getting the number one pick again.
You're too talented to do that again.
You have Nick Chubb, you have Cream Hunt.
You have Myles Garrett.
You have Odell Beckham Jr.
Who were going to get into.
You have Jarvis, Landry, Baker, Mayfield, those five or six guys, Denzel Ward in there.
Make that seven that I just named.
You're not going on 16.
You're not going one in 15.
You're not going to. And 14.
You're not getting that number one pick again.
So you're going to do the same baloney as last time.
Where you trot case Keenum out there, you draft another quarterback.
That's name is not Justin Fields.
That is not Trevor Lawrence that we're gonna be the surefire guys that we hear about already this year.
And I see Browns fans photo shopping, Trevor Lawrence into a Browns uniforms.
Stop it with that.
What do you want? A season and a half of case Keenum before you ruin the next guy.
Why, why can't we just sit down and again tweet the show at Nick Payton, 12 at Padoan? Might take.
Did you really think the Browns We're going to win the Super Bowl this year? I'll ask that first.
Before they were blown out by the Ravens, 38 to 6.
Did you really think the Browns were going toe win the Super Bowl this year? Because I didn't And we're going to get into a conversation with James rippin here just in a few minutes.
Thio get past this and to get us ready for Thursday Night Football and to try to look ahead and try to move past this.
But first I need to get off my chest.
I didn't think the Browns we're gonna win the Super Bowl.
I thought the Browns were gonna be a playoff team.
I thought they were gonna win the wild card.
This division is Baltimore's division for the taking.
It's Pittsburgh's division right up there with him.
Because Big Ben looks back and juju looks good, that defense looks ready to go.
It's gonna be a struggle for the Browns.
They need to make a wild card this season, though they have the talent, it's in place and you're gonna chase.
Ah, quarterback in his third year with his fourth head coach that you spent the number one overall draft selection on out of town.
Why, that's silly.
That's what silly franchises dio.
And that's what earned this team won and 31 all those years ago.
Because they can't be patient, they can't sit still.
They can't let ah system developed.
We hear so much and it's so funny.
It happened last year, you know, with like the GNR Dave Avery trade.
We traded Denard Avery because he didn't fit the system.
We don't sign players because they don't fit the current system.
Well, what is the system and here in in Cleveland? Because the system to me what it has been throughout my whole life is you get players and then you say that they don't fit the system or that there's something wrong with them, that there are a bust and you missed on this guy, and then you get rid of them and bring it all over again.
How about we slow down? How about we take into account that it was Kevin Stefanski is first career game, and he called a boneheaded play in the fake punt.
He got that out of his system.
Now he got that out of his system against the Ravens, who very well might win the Super Bowl this year.
Let's all just take a deep humility of breath and let Baker and Kevin Stefanski coexist for a full 16 games.
See progress every single week.
Now I understand, and I'll start to panic, too.
If we get into the season and Baker still not looking good, he's still looking like a one read guy.
Kevin Stefanski is still doing boneheaded things.
The Browns can't get up early, and they're not using Nick Chubb to the best of his ability.
They're not using Cream Hunt as a third down, back and in the passing game like they should be.
I'll start to stress out, too.
But after one week, I think we all just need to relax.
Remember when Aaron Rodgers tweeted that in the Packers went out of that huge historical run.
Let's just relax because there's no reason to get all up in arms because this was the first game of another new team and it's going to take time.
There was no pre season.
The defense look tremendously flat.
I have not heard one thing, one question one iota about the defense, and I know that they're banked up.
But you gave up 38 points in a game that was supposed to be closed in a game that your offense was struggling and needed you most.
That was horrible to stop.
Stop going for Baker's head.
He's going to be fine.
Kevin Stefanski is going to be fine.
It was a tough draw.
We're going to go into a week too much better Let's transition here because one thing that Baker needs to stop doing or I will get worried is force feeding the Balto Odell Beckham Jr.
Obviously, he had a really tough game.
Three catches, 22 yards on 10 targets.
Obviously, the really bad drop in that fifth drive that I was talking about before the Cyber missed field goal that gave the Ravens short yardage.
That was a game killer.
When Odell dropped that ball, you literally just needed a turnaround and grab it.
It would be a whole different ball game.
You got to stop force feeding the guy.
Uh, everything was going fine.
The offense look good.
Jarvis was involved.
Kareem Hunt was involved through the passing game they had.
Could Errol Hodge out there? Who? I wasn't the biggest fan off? But guys, let's stop with the Odell trade talk to same thing with Baker.
It's one week he's in a new offense to It was bad.
I understand that, but we have to give it time.
I know he's he's so easy to get mad at, and I had a feeling that this was going to happen when the Browns traded for him and I have a tweet somewhere.
If someone so bored, you could go and find it and say, We're going And I said something along the lines of We're going to get the LeBron James caliber storylines with Odell Beckham Jr without the LeBron James production.
Remember when LeBron was with the Cavs? Throughout those the four straight finals runs every week.
There was some newfound drama whether it was Kevin Love, whether it was Kyrie, Irving J.
Smith, there was always something going wrong with the Cavs.
It was like the Kardashians you always had toe.
Keep your eye on the calves because you never knew what was going on with them.
The same thing is with Odell.
But the thing is, Odell isn't carrying u two wins.
Odell isn't carrying you to a championships.
Two playoff berths like LeBron was.
And that's why fans are so easily frustrated with Odell Beckham Jr.
And I completely understand that frustration because this week I was really frustrated with him too, and I thought he did more bad than good.
He struggled to get open.
We saw that again.
I didn't like that.
We're gonna get James Europeans take on that here.
Just in about three minutes.
Odell needs to calm down.
He went out like a bat out of hell.
I know he's a man on a mission trying to prove people wrong this season again.
Same with Baker. Breathe.
It's gonna be okay.
It was the Ravens who Odell struggled against last year.
I need to see Ah, Big Odell Beckham Jr game to get excited about this guy because I am nervous if I'm gonna be completely honest with you guys.
And I know this has been a Browns optimistic 20 minutes to start the program.
If there's one piece of the Cleveland Browns that I'm completely honest with, you guys completely honest with my listeners, my fan base, whatever you wanna call yourselves, I'm nervous about Odell.
I think that he is a shadow of his old self.
I think that he's had a mawr difficult time finding separation than what we're used to seeing out of him.
And I quite frankly, I feel like Baker has been a worse quarterback since he's got here now.
Is that teams figuring out Baker, is that teams figuring out Odell, is that a hybrid of both? I'm not sure, and I love to find that out.
But the only thing that's going to figure that out is time.
And to me, you can't trade Odell right away.
And, of course, Mike Francesca, who always loves to just throw gas on the Browns, then light a cigarette and throw it right into the fire and turn around and walk away when he reported that the Browns air, you know, seeking to move on from Odell Beckham Jr this week.
No, they're not like any common person I know.
It's Mike Francesca, and I know he has, Ah, blue check Mark and people get excited about that.
And then every blawg under the sun right, something about it and runs with it, and every reporter in Cleveland is gonna ask about it and write their column about it.
And I understand that that's the way that it needs to go on.
And that's the way that it should go.
That's how the media works, especially with a polarizing guy like Odell Beckham Jr.
But right when I saw that I was like, really and you guys to I want to know where you panicked or were you like really like me at at Nick? Put on 12 That put on my take because come on, Why? Why would you trade away a guy that's at the worst point in his career? His production is at an all time low.
He seems again disgruntled, unhappy and dare I say a bit of a problem again, and you're gonna just trade him at his lowest value when his contract is that it's worse.
If anything, you trade him next year, the year after when that contract starts to take a dip and teams have to owe him less and less money.
That's when you decided toe to make a move like that.
But really, after one game, this guy puts a report out there that the Browns air shopping, Odell Beckham Jr.
And then all hell breaks loose again.
We need Thursday Night Football bad.
I'm glad that it's a short week because it's literally a 72 hour turnaround where you could put mouth washing and rinse your mouth.
Of all the bad taste that the Cleveland Browns put into it on Sunday at one Oclock Redemption 101 on Thursday Night Football short week Bengals are Also on a short week, they've got a rookie quarterback you've got, um, or established team.
You've got the more talent we're going to get into it.
Because welcoming onto the show is a Bengals beat reporter from Sports Illustrated.
He is the publisher at all Bengals dot com.
You might be familiar with him from his Cleveland Indians in Cleveland Cavaliers coverage right up here during his time with 92 3.
The fan here in Cleveland.
Ladies and gentlemen, long time no talk.
Let's get ready for Thursday Night Football.
Here's our featured guest of the week.
It's James rippin.
Okay, so joining me now from Sports Illustrated as a Bengals beat reporter, you might remember him a little bit from his time up here in Cleveland, Ohio.
Enjoy the show. James.
Long time No talk.
How you been, man? How's it? How is it? Back in the hometown, things were going well.
I mean, look, there's football.
Football has returned after months of doubt and questions about it and eso no complaints on my end.
How are you? Oh, I'm great.
Thanks for asking.
Super pumped for Thursday night football.
Hopefully, we see a better game than what both of our teams saw on Sunday and get things going in the right direction. So let's start.
Let's start right at the top with Joe Burrow obviously drafted number one overall by the Bengals.
Ah, lot of hope, A lot of hype.
Great career at L s U.
What are some of those strengths that the Browns they're going to have to look out for on Thursday? And where could he really turn into a threat for this? Brown's defense? Yeah, if you're the Browns, I think that the Chargers gave you the blueprint.
Use Myles Garrett, Olivier Vernon to just harass Joe Burrow all day long.
And that's what happened week one, mostly because the Bengals offensive line is below average.
And it wasn't a borough thing where he was holding the ball too long.
It was the fact that he didn't have time.
So I think that's sort of the key here.
When I look at where the Browns air Week versus where the you know the Bengals strength, I think they could take advantage of the Brown secondary and young linebackers.
But if bro doesn't have time, they won't be able to do those things.
And so I think that Z where I'm targeting if on the Browns.
And they're gonna have to be leery of Borough, who his first touchdown came on a 23 year old, 23 yard quarterback draw that he audible to.
So he's gonna be making checks at the line.
He's gonna be audible ing in tow, different plays, even though he's a rookie, even though he didn't have the the off season, the normal off season.
He's got this playbook down pat on the coaching staff trust.
So he's a Nath lead.
He's bigger than I think.
Some of those charges players were expecting.
He's a strong player and, you know, so rolling out things like that, he's certainly able to dio.
And then the arm strength is there the accuracy we saw, especially on that final drive against the Chargers.
So I think he's got all the talent, and I've told a lot of people this I don't really worry about Borough first primetime game.
Not worried about that.
You know there's gonna be 6000 fans in the stands, not worried about that.
I just wonder about the offensive line and how much 95 is gonna be a number nine jersey, and so that will likely determine the outcome of this game on Thursday night.
We've heard so much about the offensive line in Cincinnati leading up to this game this week isn't that bad? Is it as bad as you're making it out to be? And Myles Garrett only had one tackle total in the first game against Baltimore.
Should we probably see more of him in this game? I would expect to see more of him.
Yes, because if if I'm the Browns, what I'm doing is putting him right next toe right on the opposite side.
Rather, Bobby Hart, the Bengals starting right tackle and just making him stop Garrett and I don't think he can.
And in his defense, not a lot of people can stop Garrett one on one.
You know that that's part of it.
And that was, Ah, big factor.
Week one Look, Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram are arguably the best one to pass rush combo in the league.
I mean, there's they're really good, and that's a lot to deal with, But no, the Bengals offensive line.
I think is, Maybe there's a chance.
At least it's better than its reputation this year.
The past couple of years, it's been bad.
They've had four straight losing seasons.
A lot of that has to do with an awful offensive line.
But Jonah Williams started.
Thio got his first start last week, and he showed some signs of being a guy that that could be a building block for the future.
He had a really good training camp, missed all of last year.
By the way, former first rounder missed all of last year with a shoulder injury.
And so the 2019 1st round pick out his first started.
He had to deal with Ingram Emm Boza so that it's just a tough ask.
But I thought he got the Kings out early on and started to play better.
I like Michael Jordan, Ohio State, a lump on at left guard.
I think he's made some strides forward.
He's a second year players well at center, they have Trey Hopkins.
He's ah, serviceable center leader on that offense, and so, from center left, I think the Bengals air serviceable on the offensive line.
But there are two concerns.
One, Bobby Hart, who I've mentioned, and a lot of people, uh, in Cincinnati, air down on him right now and then The other guy is Billy Price, who, Ah, lot of your listeners and viewers probably familiar with from his days at Ohio State was a first round pick in 2018 by the Bengals.
And he hasn't been a starter, and the reason he's going to start this week is because Xavier Su a Filo, suffered a left ankle injury that's gonna keep him out for a couple of weeks.
So he landed on injured reserve.
So Price, That's the guy I'm attacking.
I would be attacking Price if I'm Sheldon Richardson and you know those Larry Ogunjobi and those guys on the interior.
And then I would also be going after Bobby Hart and then, obviously on the other side as well.
You like Olivier Vernon going against any guy that's, you know, starting his second game in the NFL.
So I think that's kind of the edge that the Browns really have to exploit to make make things hard on Borough because if he can sit back there and just process and make its reads, he's special at doing that and I think will make big plays if they let him.
So let's talk about some more of the shuffling around positions due to injury.
We saw Randy Bullock missed, missed the game winning kick and kind of not know which leg toe hold there at the end with the kicking cramp.
What? And then, obviously, the Bengals claim Austin Cyber who gets cut by the Browns.
What's going on? What are you hearing with the kicking competition? Is there one in Cincinnati? Do Browns fans need to be worried about Austin Cyber potentially hitting a game winning field goal in this game? I can't believe Browns fans air suddenly sweating Austin Cyber it.
I mean, what a what a weird, weird world.
I mean, he got cut because he missed two kicks the other day.
Hey was really in the doghouse for at times last year, and you wondered if that was the right pick at the time back.
You know, last April in the fifth round.
Yeah, I, uh I don't expect to see Austin Cyber dressed on Thursday night, and if he is, that means that Randy Bullocks calves are cramping up again and that there's something wrong.
Um, everything I've heard and exact Taylor talked about it on Tuesday is he said, Look, Randy's our guy, but on a short week, they needed an insurance policy and he didn't say it exactly like that.
But I'll say it for him.
What often cyber it is is a guy that that can kick if they need him to kick.
And they had the top waiver priority, and he was kind of gift wrap to him, right? Oh, wait.
The starting kicker that was on Cleveland, who we play in three days is already in Cove in 19 protocol gets released.
We have the top waiver priority, and there's a chance, even if it's a 5% chance, there's a chance we're going to need a starting kicker.
Let's claim them we're putting Xavier Su a Filo on injured reserve.
Anyway, we know we're doing that.
We don't have to cut anyone to get him on our active roster.
So let's go that route.
So I just think it was a matter of cir***stance and I don't expect to see cyber kick on Thursday.
I don't expect him to be on the 53 man roster of the Bengals next week.
But all he is and all he appears to be, at least as of now, is a backup plan, just in case.
Bullet can't go, but I expect him to.
You were up here last season.
Obviously, Austin Cyber was part of the problem on Sunday, but definitely not the full problem in that blowout.
What's going on with the Browns, man? What's wrong with Baker? What's wrong with this offense? How do they write this ship? I think everyone needs to breathe in Cleveland.
Just take a deep breath here, all right, look, the Ravens air really **** good.
They're really good.
I think they're gonna blow out the Bengals later this year.
And I like the Bengals.
I think they have talent, and I think the Browns have even more talent.
But you're talking about a first year coach Baker and Odell, who they were never on the same page at all last year, and the Ravens were smart because what they did once they got that lead, you kind of neutralized the run game.
You know, you don't have to worry about hunting Chubb, and you're forced baker to throw it down field.
Well, good luck.
You know, in the offensive line played well, but it just it was out of sync.
So without preseason games without, you know, much experience in Kevin Stefanski system.
The last thing I wanna dio if I'm a Browns fan is overreacting.
One game. Does it suck? Absolutely.
Are the Browns better than a 38? The six loss to the Ravens? Yeah, It should have been much closer than that.
But it was Week one.
There was no pre season.
It was a weird offseason in cir***stances matter.
The reason people are are believing in Borough in Cincinnati this week is because of what he did in spite of things around in the offensive line, given the opponent in all the cir***stances.
So those those people in Cleveland that are really down on Baker down on the Dell.
And I know there are people taking sides right now.
Take a deep breath, give them a couple more weeks.
If it still doesn't work, then yeah.
Then you examine you Have you have a discussion here because they have too much town.
The Browns have a top 5 to 8 roster in the league.
From the talent standpoint and on offense, it's probably top three.
I mean, they're loaded, and I think the key this week is to getting off to Ah, good start.
Because if I'm the Bengals and I see everything that's gone on over the past year with the Browns, with their expectations and then obviously Sunday and everyone saying same old Browns what I'm what my goal is.
Let's go score right away and Force Baker into a three and out and see how they react because the pressure is on the Browns this week.
And on the flip side, if I'm the Browns, I'm gonna rely on my two backs to top 10 backs Kareem Hunt, Nick Chubb, and I'm just gonna run them up the middle all day long because I don't expect Geno Atkins to play on Sunday or on Thursday.
Rather, uh, the time Pro Bowler missed last week for the first time since 2013 he was out with a shoulder injury.
I expect him to be out again, and Mike Daniels, another interior defensive lineman.
He's been limited with a groin.
I'm not sure if he's gonna go or not, We'll see.
But even if he does, I think that's kind of the key to this game.
Can the Browns get Kareem Hunt, Nick Chubb involved on the ground and then in the passing game against these young linebackers? And then, on the flip side, can the Bengals get Joe Mixon involved against the Browns young linebackers and take advantage of that secondary? I think those are the two real keys on each side of the ball.
You've got folks on TV this morning saying that if the Browns lose Thursday there officially a DEFCON one, it's all panic mode.
How do they stop that? How do they stop a Joe Burrow coming out party? Because, like the vibe appear seems to be that Thursday already is a must win must win game in a season that most people weren't expecting a Super Bowl.
You know, we were kind of hopeful for playoffs, but now it seems that we're in a must win situation and it's gonna be all hell in panic.
If we lose on Thursday.
Well, they should win.
So that's the thing.
Like I expected them to lose the Baltimore maybe not that bad, but I also expect them, and I have always expected them from the day the schedule came out.
And I was really hoping for Bengals Brown's prime time, by the way, because I think the potential the Baker Borough rivalry long term is so much fun and making the Battle of Ohio relevant again.
But no expectation should be to win this game.
I'm not gonna overreact to a loss against the Ravens, but if this roster can't handle business against the rookie quarterback against that, a below average offensive line against and I love a J.
Green and I thought he looked pretty good the other day.
But a receiver who's only played one full game in 23 months, you know? I mean, you look at it from that perspective, and it's like, Okay, well, this is winnable, and it is and it's a home game.
And so Baker should be more comfortable.
I would lean on that run game, and I think that that's the key.
And look, no one expects the Bengals to make the playoffs.
This Brown's team should make the playoffs.
Some people were gun shy after last year and what happened, but if Kevin Stefanski is worth his salt, and I think he is.
I dio I I don't think he's, you know, the next Bill Belichick.
But I also don't think he's the next Freddie Kitchens.
Okay, so if you're just average with that offense, you should put up big points.
And so that's my expectation.
And it really is going to be interesting on Thursday night because Borough, it was angry at himself after that game.
For all the people praising him.
He wants to get back out there and show that he's he's a winner.
It was his first loss in like over 600 days, and he doesn't obviously doesn't think that they should have lost.
And it's not just Borough.
This Bangles teams much more talented than it was a year ago, so it should be a good game.
But I expect the Browns toe win because they have more talent and expectations were higher.
And on the flip side, if you're the Bangles, the pressures on your opponent, so take advantage of that and use it, James.
Great stuff from you. As always, man.
Go ahead, plug your stuff and tell everybody what you guys got going over Sports Illustrated Bangles.

Well, so let's look ahead, because James rippin got me feeling a little bit better.
Brown Toast the Cincinnati Bengals Thursday Night Football.
6000 fans in attendance.
I think what James said about the pressure being on the Browns in this game holds true.
The Cincinnati Bengals have pretty much nothing to prove.
The rookie quarterback went out and had a pretty decent game in his debut against the Chargers.
He would have won if it wasn't for a missed kick by a big old Randy Bullock.
Okay, so So the Bengals, air sitting pretty.
They like where they're at.
There's, they say, that there's never such thing as a good loss, but that lost their feeling pretty good after.
Meanwhile, the Browns are coming back from being smacked in the mouth by the Ravens.
There's guys on the team that we're in this locker room last year that saw the same things happen.
Week one with Freddie Kitchens.
Better thinking, man.
What did I get myself into here? And I hate that, and that stresses me out.
This is one of those games where you got to get on top early.
It feels to me as like one of those games where you get the ball, you win the toss, you get the ball.
If you go out there and it's heads and you called heads, you say, Give me the ball Well, play defense at half.
The Browns need to go out there and find a way to put seven points on the scoreboard first so they could stick to their identity.
They need to run Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt.
Throughout this game, I was watching the Monday Night Football game with the Tennessee Titans with the Denver Broncos and both of those teams so effectively, even when Phillip Lindsay got hurt for Denver, ran the ball first.
That's what you have to do to be successful.
I'm almost sure of.
It is you need to run to establish the past.
You can't have Baker airing out the ball 40 times and I get that was a one off thing.
I hope it was a least because it was, Ah, big, painful loss.
But you need to go out there and get the ball early so you could eso you could stick to the game plan.
We know that's what Kevin's too fancy, wants to dio.
He wants to go out there and he wants to run Nick job and run Kareem Hunt that.
That's why he was hired.
We have two of the best backs in the league.
Nick Chubb had a really interesting quote this week where he said, we know we can run the ball.
We've just got to get better at the other things get better at the other things.
To me, that was kind of shots fired for Nick Chubb.
Probably not so much, you know, that he probably didn't mean it that way, But I agree with them, right? Cleveland.
We I talked about this last week when we were getting ready for the show that we know that that's the identity the Browns always has been.
Always will be Jim Brown.
Kevin Mack, Earnest Byner.
Cleveland runs the football.
Run the football, F C North Hard Division.
Snow's run the ball, run the ball, run the ball.
We know that Nick Chubb obviously knows that.
We run the ball well.
It's on you, Baker.
It's on you, Kevin Stefanski.
It's on you, Odell Beckham Jr to get open and to do the things right in the passing game so that on the 1st, 1st down and second down, you could just pound that rock.
And if you're not running it, it could be a short check down to a back.
One thing that needs to stop, and I jotted this down in my notes.
I made sure to the five receiver sets.
Stop it with the five receiver sets that didn't work with Freddie last year.
It doesn't work with Kevin Stefanski.
Now the only thing in my opinion that these five receiver sets are doing in Cleveland is imploring confusion.
And that's what needs to stop.
Baker looked so confused against the Baltimore Ravens, he had happy feet in the pocket.
It was constantly collapsing onto him.
His feet were moving a mile minute and his brain wasn't.
He was staring down receivers.
Those five receiver sets just create so much confusion and so much trouble.
And obviously, I think a lot of it came because they were down so much.
But, man, you gotta scrap that.
You got to scrap having Nick Chubb roll all the way out and cream Hunt rollout as receivers.
That doesn't work.
That infuriated me, and a reason why it infuriates me is even if you know nothing about football, right? You know that if Baker sends chub out as a receiver and hunt out as a receiver, chances are they're throwing the ball.
If there's nobody behind Baker or nobody at his hip, I think it's fair to assume that it's a passing play and that makes things a life a little bit easier.
If you're a defensive player, stop with those five recent versus that drove me insane all week.
I think what they got to do is what works best, right.
Odell and Jarvis jam it with the tight ends.
Jam it with Jankovich with Cream hunter Nick Chubb.
Have Jarvis and Odell go out on short little slant routes, have a tight end, big tight end or to leak out? And that's where Baker is the best.
We got to stop confusing the kid because he was confused again on Thursday, and that's our on Sunday, and that's all those five receiver sets Dio stop that.
That that makes me insane, James said.
This, too, and I agree with them, and I'm doubling down on this take.
This needs to be a career game for Myles Garrett.
And when I think about career Myles Garrett games, there's a lot of good moments.
The sack and the Jets game on Thursday Night Football, where Baker went off, was awesome where he had the sack and he did like the heart thing into the camera that was sick.
I think of the you know Pittsburgh Sack on Big Band in his first game, obviously, the Jets game where he had the dirty or not dirty hit when he broke the quarterback's legs that was filling in for Sam Donald when he had mono.
I think this needs to be a game where, even if Garrett only has one sack or two sacks, they come in here huge spots.
Or he gets the ball out or scoops it up and takes it the other way or something.
This needs to be my Myles Garrett coming out party.
How do you stop Joe Burrows coming out party and Joe Burrows Fan galore Fast on national TV is you have Miles Garretts coming out party on national T V Because last time Miles was on national TV, we know how that ended out with the helmet swing with Mason Rudolph and with all the embarrassment that followed suit with that, because when that game was over, that wasn't just the biggest story in sports.
That was the biggest story in the news.
That was the biggest story period was that there was a football player who took another player's helmet off and beat him with it.
So I think Myles Garrett is going to come out looking for redemption, looking for revenge on national TV on Thursday Night Football and the Browns have had success on Thursday Night Football.
Ride that high ride, that wave.
If I was coming Stefanski.
That's what I tell this crew.
Hey, I know I'm new.
I know I'm a new coach, but man, this franchise with Baker at the quarterback has had fun on Thursday Night Football.
We've had some memorable moments and some great games during this slot.
Let's go out there and let's give these fans something to root for.
Let's spoil Joe Burrows. Big night.
You know the national audience is waiting to see Joe Burrow.
They're not waiting to see Baker.
If anything, they're waiting toe laugh at Baker.
They know the Browns failed last year.
They looked at the box score nationally and saw that the Browns sucked on Sunday.
They wanna make fun of Baker.
They wanna make the Memes out of Odell and out of Jarvis, and they want the Browns toe lose this game so they could say that case.
Keenum needs to be the starter.
That Baker was a bust of a number one pick that it's Joe Burrows division and that Odell Beckham Jr is angry, disgruntled socks and needs traded.
That's what they want to happen nationally.
That's what set up right now is for Joe Burrow to succeed all the lights, the camera and the action around Joe Burrow.
You spoil that by having a Myles Garrett game against the Cincinnati Bengals defense that is banged up.
And that's something that I'm a little bit worried about.
I'm not worried about cyber kicking after listening to James European super great insight there.
If you just turn it into the show and you miss that, make sure to check it out on apple pods and Spotify thio here.
Everything that he said about that I am worried about the Browns injuries right Today we found out Jed, Rick Wills, Jack Conklin, J. C.
Treader are all questionable with various respective injuries.
If you need to start three different plug and play pieces on that offensive line, then I'm nervous because the Bengals defense isn't that good.
But hell, anybody could be good on a band aided up offensive line.
With three starters out, I'm really, you know, hoping for the best there.
Jed. Rick was a top 10 pick.
Jack Conklin It's just a finger and an ankle injury.
I feel like you could play with that.
And I feel like they're just being extra precautions with JC Treader and that knee surgery hoping for the best there because that Bengals defense is not that good there without Mike Daniels there without Gino Atkins there without their starting safety, you can't let them look good.
This needs to be a good game for Myles Garrett.
As I was saying earlier, it needs to be a even bigger game for that.
This is such a great opportunity to get things right before you play with Washington football team who has had who had success defensively.
The Cowboys, who are nothing to ever be scoffed at defensively, even though they don't look to be at their best this year.
Or, who knows if ever the Colts, the Steelers, Here's your chance.
If you're looking for a tune up, the NFL gave it to you in a bread basket.
Go out there and get this thing right.
Get the offense click and spoiled.
Joe Burrow is coming out party.
I think they could do this.
I hope I'm wrong.
I think this is going to be a Browns win.
Don't get me wrong.
It's going to feel like last year in Week two, when they played the Jets and the game that Myles Garrett broke the guy's leg because I just feel like it's gonna be a Slappy win and we're gonna win and we're gonna cover, I think.
But I think it's gonna be sloppy, especially if all these injuries happen.
I don't want toe win and feel bad about it after it'd be so nice for once, if we could just win.
Baker looks good.
Odell looks good.
Chub looks good.
Defense plays well.
Everything goes according to plan and we could feel good.
And I feel like the reason we felt so bad after that Jets game last year, even though it was a win, was because it felt like no progress was made.
We lost Week one with all those penalties.
Week two, we cut back on the penalties, but there were still some and the offense still looked out of sync at the times.
The defense wasn't as good as it could be, and that's why it felt weird.
What I need to see this week is obviously a win. You're playing.
The Cincinnati Bengals, who should still finished even though they're talented roster, still should finish last this year.
You gotta win today, and you gotta show improvements throughout this game.
I think that's the key to success there.
So let's get into it.
It's time for the play of the week presented by our show hosts at big play dot com Make big play your number one source for live interactive sports talk almost every night of the week.
Best way to do that is give them a follow at big play. Underscore.
You have big play Dave.
Chris MacNeil, Peyton Hillis, sir.
Yeah, it's all those guys putting out Great awesome, hilarious in interactive sports content.
Don't miss any of that.
So how this play of the week works, we're gonna talk about someone that missed the mark, someone that hit the mark and somewhere that fellow in the middle of both of those things.
So my small play of the week, as the Cleveland Indians are going right now, is Indians general manager Chris Antonetti and Mike Sherman.
Off boys, I thought this front office has never lost a trade.
I thought this was a front office where we way God always trust them.
These guys never lose a trade.
We got to get rid of Corey Kluber for the next Aroldis Chapman closer, who was actually on horse steroids, and Delino DeShields, who wasn't even batting 2 50.
We have to trade Mike Clevinger, who could probably win a Cy Young if he were to stay healthy on any given time in any given career for Josh Naylor, who plays outfield and looks like a permanent designated hitter.
Oh, besides the fact that he's got traded here a to 75 batting average and he's already down into the two thirties.
Josh Naylor looks like a guide to me that we're gonna be get written going into next year when he's like the everyday left fielder and the outfield gets solidified and all that, that we're gonna get sick of seeing in the lineup really quick.
We're gonna be like, OK, who could we call up? Who could we shuffle around to play left field? Because I'm sick of this guy? Tribe has lost seven straight.
They're looking to lose their eighth straight tonight.
DeShields is batting second loop low.
You Chang also in the lineup for the tribe on Wednesday.
Boy, I'm not confident about this team.
I I know they're falling into the third place there behind the Minnesota Twins.
There, big time playing catch up, catch up on the Chicago White Sox, all but mathematically eliminated there.
This thing fell apart at the seams.
The payroll is disgusting, the Indians air nearing unwatchable.
They're boring. They're they're disappointing.
It's the same old.
Get your hopes up just to get let down at the trade deadline that we witnessed last year.
That's why you don't trade away talent.
When you have talented players.
I don't care how good you think the return will be in three years.
You keep the talented guy on your roster when you're in first place and you start trying to do big and fun things going in October, and you try to give fans something to remember and something to feel good about going into next season, because right now regarding the Indians, I feel like a big old pile of poo I feel lied to. I feel deceived.
I feel all of those things because my favorite team was in first place and they got rid of a utility outfielder that they could probably use right now and a starting pitcher.
That's a top end guy that they could have gotten much more for.
It's just really mad, and I know I don't have all day to talk about it.
I know you guys don't really carry your equally upset.
You're equally depressed.
I've had such a hard time watching the tribe because it just bums me out.
So let's get into the medium play of the week.
Who is? Ted Carter? The University of Nebraska's president says.
Yesterday, the Big 10 will be back.
He's like we're getting ready to re announce the beginning of the Big 10 football, which means the big the Big 10 will be back in Nebraska will be back like his old friend or whatever is like.
Oh, that will probably take a lot of your take a lot off of your plate there, Ted.
So big Ted is back.
That's the good news.
They're idiots for hitting the Corona panic button in the first place.
I don't know why they felt so desperately that they needed to cancel and screw everything up.
I hope that I'm not sure how this works, and obviously we'll see, because they're probably not gonna play a game for another month or so.
I hope they still do have a chance for these kids to play in the college football playoff if the kids, if the players feel safe in doing so.
And if if everything checks out with that, uh, in my opinion, all systems go.
I'm trying to make that playoff game.
I'm trying to win a national championship with Justin Fields as my quarterback.
With Chris a lot back for another season.
I just pumped in.
The Big 10 is back because I canceled fall on one of my first few podcasts.
I said, Big 10 football is canceled.
I can't wake up on Saturdays and watch Ohio State.
Um, you know I can't watch Nebraska vs Purdue right? When I opened my eyes, lose 7 to 6 and be all mad on Twitter about that, I can't watch college game day like all of that is reversed.
All of that is undone there.
Kevin Warren is still an idiot.
I'm still I still haven't forgiven them yet, but I'm so glad that all the presidents were able to put their heads together, put their heads together and do this right because obviously the players want to play.
The coaches wanted to coach and the fans wanna watch.
So as long as these players, these student athletes that aren't getting paid, still were cool and they were on board, then I'm on board, Man, bring the Big 10 back.
Super pumped about that, Sir.
Yacht was right.
Feels good time for my big play of the week.
The Denver Nuggets Talk about becoming legendary is you come back from down 3 to 1 against the Utah Jazz in a tough matchup against Mike Kindly Donovan Mitchell, who are also red hot, playing great basketball with Rudy Gobert.
Ah, lot of teams going into the bubble weren't sure how that team was going.
Toe look, is the chemistry going to be there is, you know Donovan Mitchell mad at Rudy Gobert for not taking coronavirus seriously.
If they lose that syriza or they're gonna have to blow it up in demanded trade, well, then the Utah Jazz catch fire in the playing tournament.
They start playing really well together and its like.
Are the Utah Jazz the force to be reckoned with? Like, could they be the team that takes down LeBron in the West And then they come back from down through the Denver Nuggets come back from down 3 to 1 and legendary fashion.
Jamal Murray is a bona fide superstar in this league.
I want to see him make a M V P race next season, and they do the same thing against the Los Angeles Clippers.
Who I told you guys on these airwaves that the Clipper stink.
Paul George is a role player at best at this point in the career.
Oklahoma City Thunder one that trade seven days a week and once on, you know, twice on Sundays.
If I was the Oklahoma City Thunder front office, if I was in their ownership group on the night of the draft and free agency and when trades were beginning to start again this offseason, I'm giving uh, the Los Angeles Clippers another call.
Hey, Steve, it's the Oklahoma City thunder.
Let's make another trade because we robbed you guys blind for Paul George, who is a role player for you.
How about we try to help you out a little bit.
Mawr man The Thunder made out like bandits In that trade, the Clippers look bad.
Quiet is a fraud.
I have, you know, Skip Bayliss and Max Kellerman telling me on TV all week that he's LeBron.
He's not gonna blow a 3 to 1 lead.
You know he's as good as LeBron.
He's on Kevin Durant's level.
No, he's not LeBron and Kevin Durant.
Kevin Durant's here quiets down here, and everybody else follows quite a really good player.
But back game was ugly.
When we look at quite Leonard's legacy, we're looking at a team with, um, you know, that was great Coach by Nick Nurse and had a great supporting cast with Paschal CIA come and Danny Green.
Last season with the Raptors, we looked at his championship with the Spurs, where he had Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, future Hall of Famer, surrounding him with the greatest coach, possibly of any sport in Gregg Popovich and Quiet.
Leonard was on that championship team to this is the first Kwai lead super team that he assembled and wasn't traded to, and he came out and fell flat on his face.
So the Denver Nuggets, your 321 legends ride this high because you're probably not gonna beat the Los Angeles Lakers.
But congratulations to you because you're my big play of the week.
Thank you guys so much, everybody for hanging out.
This has been such another fun episode of pinot might take love doing this show with you guys on Wednesdays.
