Brie, all right.
And with that, once again, we welcome you back into sports.
Asked your news.
Where is always on Madame? More directed.
There is Matt Brooks as we talk all things and be a How are you, sir, On a Monday that the playoffs are officially here. Good.
Just kind of wouldn't for everything to start.
We got a 1 30 Eastern standard time game between the Jazz and the Nuggets.
I think this series that I'm weirdly the most tryingto watch outside of maybe O K.
C and the, um, and the Rockets.
But I'm really excited for that game for that.
I think it's too interesting philosophies.
Just two teams that kind of played differently.
They're going to be a team that shoots a lot of threes.
The Nuggets, not so much.
Michael Porter is gonna be an interesting spot to watch.
I just kind of like that.
Siri's from like, a philosophical perspective, and, um, I'm I'm I'm pretty excited for that when I have to say, Well, it's funny because we talked about so many over over the bubble, the eight games about, you know, the young players that have emerged in just different guys, that of all the sudden, really taking center stage here as a cat passes by.
Ah, and and And now it's gonna be interesting to see right, like staying Dame Lillard, do his thing and and and managed Teoh take care of the Grizzlies there over the weekend to secure their spot in the playoffs like that's not Oh my God, the revelation of Dame Lillard in the Bubble.
We didn't know that he is capable, so you expect him to continue to do its thing.
Where some of these younger players there's at least a curiosity of as it ramps up in playoff time will auto poor Your junior still looked away that he has.
Warren be able to continue that type of art that he's had over the eight game? So even even beyond the philosophical differences between, say, that Jazz matchup, it's It's a curiosity that for me to see if any of these guys that proverbial saying do, they will turn the spotlight, but they continue to rise up to that challenge.
Yeah, I love playoff us basketball.
Like the other part that I really enjoy.
It's just like the It's a gift.
It's very different from any other sport like, you know, say what you want about baseball, but they've still just moment figured out.
I mean, you know, you have, like, if it's like a Game seven, you know, it's the eighth inning, two outs, like I don't know if there's much in sports that can compare to that just in terms of like just the gravity of it and how slow it is in that moment.
I really, really like football.
Obviously got one shot with every team and bats balls.
It's like it's like a game of chess.
Like, you know, you're seeing a different thing every single game.
It's all about what counters you're throwing out there.
Um, what adjustments you're making is a head coach and I love that about basketball.
I think that it it's definitely every single sport has a different thing that makes it unique.
Once it comes like you know big time playoff time.
It's funny to think about like the pace of baseball is something that's agonizing for me, but you're right In those biggest moments, you're like, wow, that extra 20 seconds between every match is, like, you know, holding your breath, waiting for the next sequence.
You mentioned about the idea of being given chest.
So So Portland takes care of the Grizzlies.
That game was arguably more exciting than I thought it was going to be going into it.
But Portland still handles her business.
They'll take on the Lakers.
And now, as we look to that, match up that idea of chess, how you know how many moves can get made here for Portland? Because the first thing I think about is it will be interesting to see what the Lakers look to do with Dame Lillard.
Do they look to just say, Let's take him off the board and see if the rest of your Carmelo Anthony, C J.
McCollum and the rest can carry that offense and make the games interesting? And if they do that, will Portland have a counterpoint to that type of focus from a strong defensive team come in for the regular season.
I don't think they can like honestly, like as much as I want to be like, Oh, well, maybe they could put Caruso or somebody like that like I like Caruso.
Cruz is a very good defender.
The one thing he's missing is like that athleticism that is, you know, gonna be able to keep him with Damian Lillard like he's.
He's a balancing.
I think he's more athletic than people realize, but that's a big assignment for Damian Lillard.
There's only so many guys that can really do that.
Um, I also feel like you need to be a little bit bigger, like just like a little bit more size on them.
So you think of like Gary Harris last year? That's a pretty good example guy who's got a good, decent amount of athleticism, Um, good amount of size, just That's a better, I think counter for somebody like Damian Lillard.
I They're the two best players in this Siri's.
Um, well, maybe I should say that the best on each team.
I don't think the other team has a counter for them like a Muchas I must say, Yeah, you know, the Lakers don't have anybody for Damian Lillard.
I don't think that the Blazers have anybody for LEBRON like this is going to be a tuneup Siris for him as the interesting part for May.
Ah, relative to these teams coming in is just about where you think what they've shown you to this point over the eight games versus what you're about to start to see.
And it's not gonna be a shock or surprise when LeBron turns it up a notch, like that's expectation.
But I think it's going to be, Ah, refresher course in how dominant he can be, especially when you're taking on a team like Portland who doesn't necessarily have the personnel.
And then also you mentioned philosophy before they are not philosophically, a strong defensive team, too.
Deep into these numbers, I hate Teoh with Labour done, but when you go over out Florida rapture rare.
It's like this thinking about any of these matters in the playoffs.
We just talk about defensive rating.
Oddly enough, Caruso is the highest defensive rated A Laker over there, but they could go Caruso, Davis, McGee, Green, James And then you get into Bradley, who won't be there.
But Dwight Howard even Kozma a slight positive in defensive rating.
So you know you get pretty far down into the roster talking about quality defensive performances when you flip over to the other side of this is board and the Portland Trail Blazers.
You talk about one Ah, Hassan Whiteside and then you talk about Trevor Reza, a player who opted out here.
Those are the only two players that come into this.
Siri's with positive, raised on the defensive bet.
Now those differences between from a matchup standpoint and also again playoff and turning it up.
But when you think about Dean Lillard, I don't think you ever gonna be worried about his his grit and tenacity and willingness to be committed to it, despite whatever the results. Maybe.
But when you get down to their 2nd and 3rd scorers, however, you want toe rank them.
Given how, see Gemma Collins had some injury concerns.
You know Melo is not giving you defensive intensity.
Don't give any defensive output, but he also needs to be there to help carry you on the offense event for some stretches of this, How difficult is it from that standpoint for Portland to make a dent in this series, knowing just naturally where the defensive a***en is on either side? Um, I don't know.
I It's so hard for me to picture how this Siri's goes well, Like I I think that was I got ask on Twitter.
Like what? My top three Serie of work.
I don't think it's that grateful for astronomy.
Very excited, excited to watch.
I kind of know what the outcome is already, though, Like I I don't know.
There's just such a discrepancy.
Like even, you know, said they have nobody for LeBron.
I mean, what are they throwing at? Anthony David Zehner Kitsch? Um, Collins, I guess who's looked good in spots, not great and others like, You know, he's a little bit of a minus offensively right now.
It's kind of tough to, you know, keep him out there all the time.
I mean, that's kind of a problem for me.
Like that's the thing about the Lakers is like If you can take away, you know LeBron and a D and you make the other guys beach you Well, that's arguments gets interesting.
The Blazers can't do that like a I just don't think they, by the way, there's not a ton of teams that can do that right is I want to go.
Hey, listen, Tonight's game plan.
We're going to get LeBron and a D kind of out of their game because we know that we could just check that box and then we'll see what everybody else does.
Like That's the whole premise is like, great even.
And because most teams, if you have a plus rated defender that has the size and athleticism to take either one of those players off the board.
But it's because you're then not focusing on a D right? I'm gonna lock up LeBron, lock up LeBron.
I'm gonna do that easy thing.
And then it also means that you don't have the supplemental players behind the go. Now.
We'll lose a little bit of a size advantage here with a D, but we still have a player to put on them, right? Even a guy like markets, you say, Well, he's a good player, But in the matchup against a D, specifically, you just picture.
Yeah, I have always had to use the term around, eh? NBA players of lack of athleticism.
But to say that Anthony Davis is a much more athletic player than Nurkic.
You can just in my mind you picture these sequences of being like, Well, there's narc.
It's trailing off of eighties hip because a D can actually take him off the perimeter and work into the lane and give some of those advantages on a possession possession basis.
Yeah, it's funny, I like.
So let's say the Rockets, I don't know who is gonna win between the Rockets and okay, see, I really don't.
But let's say the Rockets win and they face this Lakers team like I like that team way better.
I know that doesn't like on paper like, Wait, why would that make sense? Because they're super small on this Lakers team is huge.
They have a couple of guys to throw it a d in the post with with Tucker and hardened. Where do enough.
And then they have a bunch of perimeter guys Covington house, guys, You're gonna at least throw it LeBron and see if you can make life a little bit tricky for him.
Like that's the thing like these, you know, I don't know it.
You need guys that are strong in the post, but also quit to stay with a D and for LeBron, you just need a bunch of wings to throw at him, you know, and just kind of wear him down with a collective effort.
Um, they don't this'll Blazers team doesn't have even a little bit of that.
So it's really tricky for me to see that, like it all gets just I know I want to like this Siri's because I think Damian Lillard is gonna go off.
But that's what the That's what he's been doing.
And they're barely scraping by, whoever the Mavericks or whatever.
You want to throw the Nets like its rights and that even even the Grizzlies game, right? Like, Hey, you pulled it out.
You pulled that game out like it's like at some point, you want to be saying I didn't have to pull that game out.
We had ankle usual, I will say so.
I think what makes these games exciting is that because you know Daimler could go off at certain points.
There will be, and maybe if it's safe to say the Siri's goes, we'll get into this later.
However many games this series go, there's gonna be a couple of these games where it's close enough and you're getting any of those final few minutes of the fourth quarter, where it could be exciting from the standpoint of boy.
Well, if Lillard's just on fire, if it's game time and he's knocking down threes, it just becomes exciting because it means that at least execute offensively.
If you're the Lakers, maybe an off balance shot here or there and then all of a sudden, right down four or five points and you're talking about Littler can just pop off a couple times, even Carmelo Anthony in the quarter.
Any of these guys, it can start to get a little interesting for a couple of these games, but this is a relatively similar line on that.
If I'm not mistaken in terms of the way Vegas, look at this initial game, the Siri's overall, by the way.
Portland gets plus 25 coming into this initial matchup, and that's about the same as what the Nets are getting against the Toronto Raptors.
So you know if you want to put it into context.
As happy as we are excited about the Brooklyn Nets and what they've accomplished, nobody has a lot of high expectations for them going to the Toronto Siri's and that from Vegas is standpoint.
You're getting the same kind of indication of like, you want some good odds were going to give you some pretty friendly odds for Portland in here because the outlook is a fairly fairly ah, fairly grim one.
I guess you would say, um, is that I mean, I don't wanna believe this one.
There's a lot of other interesting matchups.
You talk about it even today.
Not to go too quickly off topic.
But that idea of the Jazz Nuggets one.
Obviously, that's going to be the Raptors. Later.
I will stay away from any home or talk there.
The unfortunate once in May is is also later tonight when you get that 70 Sixers and the Celtics match up, where because you lose Simmons because you have injury concerns around and beat.
And I already I already wasn't a huge fan of the 70 Sixers coming into the bubble.
It just feels like this is one of those great examples off a very Toronto tight team in Boston of just we know each other.
We're familiar, we execute well, and we're just going to be a better overall basketball team than you.
Over the course of how a 67 game series.
Yeah, I'm a little worried about them.
I think that I think there's a world in which, like they figure it out and they kind of put these weird like cork mas shake Milton.
I don't know Tobias hair like they have enough shooting toward the stay in these games because of not having Simmons, but like there's a big, big defensive responsibility now, unlike Matisse Table, who's a rookie and is good but like it's a big responsibility for him to know because he's like what? They're only plus, I mean, outside of Richardson's, a good defender.
I don't want to say that just yet, but he's like their main perimeter defender right now, Um, NBC is gonna show up.
He's got to be excellent and, ah, it's just a lot of responsibility.
I don't know how much I wanna watch that.
Siri's like, I like the rivalry, and I probably actually won't even be able to catch a lot of that game today because I'll be doing watch it.
Streaming has stuff like my post games air a ridiculous now.
But the Dallas, when I like like I want to watch that game, um, I find that to be a good test for Luca, and I think we'll know pretty early into that Siri's if it's gonna be good or not.
Yeah, if you see Luca importing gets kind of getting their numbers.
But they're still trailing by 7 to 13 points consistently throughout the first couple quarters ago.
Okay, well, you guys will. You'll take.
You'll take our advice and you'll add a Victor Oladipo next year.
And then we'll see how it goes for them.
Um, no, But you're right.
I think that the only thing that keeps me interested in this isn't really a great because I I like the pure basketball side of it.
But if the chipping is between six years and the Celtics, where I would go, he's got these teams have some history.
And if it isn't quite going the way that the Celtics air hoping us or the Sixers are hoping, then maybe there's just some chip ***** that starts to boil over.
There were these things kind of become a little bit like an old school kind of scrum around these games.
Yeah, the interesting things there, too, is you lose Simmons, and this to be the perfect spot.
If Al Horford was Al Horford that they thought they were getting a lot of a sudden, you say, Well, yeah, but we'll just kind of shuffle.
This thing will stay really big.
Al Horford will do his thing and will arguably be l pretty close.
We're gonna lose some defensive a***en, maybe whatever.
We're pretty close to this thing.
And unfortunately, as we know, that just hasn't been the way that it's panned out for Horford with that team.
So you can start to then ramp up expectations around him, either.
I'm I hate the Horford hit fit like I really do, even if even if they don't have Simmons, it's just like a weird that they both get in each other's lanes.
Like as much as we think of Horford is like a spacing big he is.
I mean, but he's got low block moves and he's a center like he just I was not a power forward is just not a power forward in this league.
Were like set quick five years late on that So um yeah, I just even though it's it's so funny, how it's even a weird roster without Simmons, like you think that you get rid of the guy that can't shoot you like Well, maybe it makes more sense.
Yeah, not really.
We'll have a plus shooter on the floor.
Turns out it's actually well.
And, you know, again what? Arguably, like, you know, you talk about Ah, a stats guy.
I know, but you said about like it, like Sybil has been has been a plus defensive player for them this year.
But Simmons is rate there.
Along within beat is being the top three legitimate through the really strong defenders on that roster.
So taking a Leo, OK, he's not a strong shooter.
Simmons also knows how to get his point without having to shoot, and he's a plus defender.
So now you're talking about trying to replace that on both ends of the floor, and it's almost like you talk about in that Lakers matchup of Well, if you want to take away LeBron. Okay, fine.
Do you have another plus defender that you feel confident in taking on a D? It's likewise here where you go, OK, we don't have Simmons.
So even if you're going to have Sybil Mitt safe.
Aibel excels and takes away one of the best weapons.
But now, who's the next guy behind them that you can match up defensively and something? It's easy to forget about the defensive end of the floor and usually in the playoffs.
It's where the better defensive teams really start to ratchet it up.
And from a Boston Celtics standpoint, I think that's that's what they can do, right? This is where you start to get this.
Where markets smarts, value truly shines playoff time in his little bulldog minutes that he's going to give you, especially behind Kemba Walker.
Now that's a new dynamic there, swapping out one point guard for another and saying that we can come at you almost across the board with riel defensive grit consistently wave after wave throughout a game.
Yeah, they just have, like, seven guys I trust like there.
I I don't know their my sleeper pick right now to, like, win it like I just if if Tatum continues to do what he's been doing, like gonna be really tough to beat them, I don't know who I'd pick, but I like I almost feel like they're my favorite right now, too, to come out of the East, which feels crazy.
But, um would you rather see, um, would you rather see that the I sent out a three seed? I don't get to the point of it being the, uh, Celtics Toronto like Celtics Raptors, I think would be just from Ah, you know, I want to be honest play, but I just in my mind, I look at those two teams are very similar in the idea of execution and mentality.
Great defensive strength like I feel like that would be arguably the most exciting Eastern Conference final matchup for the way these teams looking how they've been playing since coming into the bubble.
Um, I I think you're still probably getting the best two teams with Milwaukee.
Even though they've looked dysfunctional.
I just I like him a little.
There's something Bessie the honest thing, like their honest Middleton.
Um, I I think they'll be OK.
They're gonna get blood so worked in they still probably will come out of the east, but, um, I think we're getting the best two teams.
If if Boston and Milwaukee go all the way to the finals, I just, I don't know.
I like the Boston over Toronto right now. That's the cool thing.
Basically, from around what goes round ones. Not very good.
I'm gonna I'm just gonna say it right now.
It's not great, like it's not that I think the best Siri's is Boston Philly, which you said you don't like it, but I think you're going to get regardless, regardless of the results are not being important.
I think that I think that the Heat Pacers Siri's is going to be more entertaining and engaging.
Then maybe what? You're a little things consider with injuries and stuff like, I think that's actually going to be, ah, fun Siri's toe watch.
In spite of the fact that no one goes watch out for you, watch out for Miami coming out of that taste or Syria, I mean, I don't know, even though you did not want is really turkey for that.
Like it's like, you know, I like the T J Warren thing.
It's it's great.
Um, but, you know, they're running like a weird three guard lineup of Aaron Holiday.
You know, Allah, depot, Brogden, they just like they kind of are what they are and their lineup as one does.
Yeah, I mean, just like it's kind of are what they are like.
They're not they they seem like a really easy first round bounce to me because of like, Okay, sure, they wouldn't Game one Great.
What's their game plan? After that, it's going to the exact same thing every single game because they could only do so much like if there's a ton of responsibility on Myles Turner and I don't know, I just They really use the bonus and Jeremy Lamb in and a full, fully healthy Victrola Depot.
They really had no 100% and some of these things to I feel like a lot of times when you think about any game or matchup where you go well, you know, if certain things go the right way for them, it could be good, you know, etcetera, um, And then you realize, though, if, say, if, say, Turner gets into foul trouble right, like it only takes one player or even T. J. Warren like, say, T. J.
Warren is randomly picks up a couple of fouls early, you go right.
But this is what's so delicate about teams like this that are in the middle of the pack in either conference.
In a lot of ways, neither conference where you go.
Yeah, you're only one thing going wrong for you away from literally having not just is not no answer like oh well, pivot, you don't have the personnel to be able to do something different.
So that's, you know, when you look at the East, especially that's what makes against me of these first rounds.
Not as exciting.
The other thing is to, and this is an obvious statement.
But the Western Conference, the reason why those matchups could be interesting and exciting is because when you look at the standings and you go well, the seven seed Mavericks or a 43 win team, you know, ascending 44 44 44 46 all the way up to the Nuggets in the three position.
That's what makes even the 772 match up for the Mavericks.
But then, all those matchups 36 and 45 are exciting because you technically don't You don't really know if you played out this exact same season 10 times you're going to shuffle all of those teams over and over again.
They're going to rotate through about who rises to the top, and I'll be curious to see if coming into this season, I think we gave a lot of credit to Houston and felt like they've changed in things.
Obviously, they've gone very small.
Are they truly the third best team? And they were figuring things out.
Is that the way the hierarchy should go or have some other teams in the Western Conference just really proved that they may be your better and are rising a little bit quicker than we assume they would.
Well, you since tricky because they I don't know if they have Westbrook like I just Well, they don't have Westbrook in Game one, so I don't know what that looks like.
Hardin can just do it himself.
I mean, he's done it a million times, so that's that Seriousness. Fun.
I mean, 34 It's funny, like not 343645 Those are really good.
Siri's, um after that it's a little questionable.
I don't love the to seven for the Mavs.
I think that's fun to watch, but I don't expect it to be close.
And I mean, we started off 18 ID.
I think that one of its funny I think the blazers are one of the two worst teams in the in the West right now.
Um, yeah, I don't know.
I don't I don't buy it too much right now, but, um but I mean, it's funny, like, that's kind of how I feel like MBA playoffs could be like, You either get a really exceptional first round and maybe a second round that isn't is great or you get a first round that isn't, you know, amazing.
But the second round is just on fire.
Like you look at some of these matchups that we could be dealing with and round two.
And, um, I mean, I think the only one that might not be all that interesting is that the 23 But even if like Denver looks really good and beats Utah and it's convincing, Um, that's a tricky matchup.
I think for the Clippers that the deal with Yoka true, I mean, is gonna be a total pest.
And then, you know, Rockets Lakers is amazing.
I think Fox bucks.
He might be the best one of all these potential.
So there you go.
I think that's kind of like Why you gotta? And that's why you gotta watch that Pacer Siri's.
You got to see them show some dominant I e.
To your credit, like it would be to say, like if after his game to I go Boy, that was to really convincing victories for the Miami Heat.
It's not gonna be so exciting, but here.
But look what's looming this great matchup against the Milwaukee Bucks.
No, it is unfortunate.
It's rare in MBA that you get those really solid 81 in 27 matchup because that's just listen because teams were better.
There's a reason why the Lakers or Clippers with it is a reason why Toronto and the Bucks or where they are.
Let's get out of here on this Portland where we all started.
Um, how many games does this go like? I mean, I don't see one game, maybe maybe six, but I'm gonna go with five.
I'm pretty bullish on the Lakers winning this one.
I would like the, uh I'll be honest, total like this way better, because our ah SportsCastr overlord was asking me.
Ah, was asking was like What do you think? And I think it was weird to me after having watched Portland and it's so exciting and all the stuff going on, we're gonna excited about them.
We're talking about that.
We still acknowledge their deficiencies, but I was very much against so good that look what they're doing going on this run, get themselves into the playoffs and then immediately might be immediately trigger responses like, No, it's not gonna be good.
Siri's, I mean, not, you know, I was like six games, like anything goes like six games would be like, uh like, maybe they get they win Game five because the Lakers air like, All right, we've established ourselves Siri's.
We don't necessarily need to worry about when we win it just a matter of not if, but when we win this serious.
So that's the unfortunate part after all that hype.
But I think from that standpoint, I would much rather like you said, like I almost rather be the Sun's just because he'd be interesting to watch a young team go at it.
And even if it was the Lakers and four I might rather watch Lakers in four over Phoenix than Lakers in five over Portland.
Yeah, I wish you every was playing too, because I would be a good a good little Siri's.
I use a little bit more size to my like, their wings them and like, there.
That seems gonna be interesting next year.
Um, I really feel like you're not the rotation.
I end up back where I started it at the beginning of all of this where I was like, I want youth in the playoffs and I got they Portland put a spell on me, but I'm right back where I originally started off.
I'd rather see something different if you if you feel like the outcome is assumed, all these games kick off.
Obviously, today we've got that 1 30 start, as you mentioned there over in the Western Conference between the Oh, excuse me, I'm gonna lose my place between the Jasmine and the Nuggets.
Then you got that that very tight matchup that we never got to touch on here, Matt.
And that's those Brooklyn Nets taking on those Raptors 76 or Celtics Maverick.
Simpler way some **** and fix and throw away thoughts on on the nets.
Ah, Surana, Siri's I don't want this and they're losing it for that's gonna be my take.
Oh, I'm calling, I'm calling.
I'm calling for one.
I'm calling for at least one victory.
I think that that again and probably it's out of you.
By the way, I could have very quickly changed my opinion following Game one of the Siri's, because I think there's always an opportunity for one of those in any of these Siri's.
But I think it's going to be about all the things that Jacques Jacques Vaughn has has demonstrated sort of coaching a***en.
Okay, pull out all the stops.
Whatever you think, whatever tricks you have in your bag scheme and otherwise, and then if you catch them off guard for one game, you're not going to have like we talked about with other teams.
You don't have another and now we go to my next to bag of tricks.
It's like you use this once.
He makes the adjustment and then you go from there.
What a depressing wait. It's a way to end the broadcast.
Enjoy all the N B.
A games today, Obviously myself.
Map broke. Simeon Russell.
We're all going back in talking all things MBA right here on SportsCastr News.
Until then, thanks for checking in with us.
We'll catch up with you, Suit.
