hello and welcome to the short of making later with Sam Biederman, and we brought on ICO Jenna to the show.
So this is the sport canisters premier baseball talk show today.
We'll be going over and I'll be 2020 award directions So, But before we get into that, before we get into that, we have a bunch of topics to get into.
As on Wednesday, the first players arrived.
A Camp Players report It's camp on Wednesday and with with that, baseball is technically back, so it's very exciting.
Obviously, the testing has shown a lot of players coming up with the virus, which is, uh, surprised we'll get we'll get, and we'll get into that in a moment.
Just the feeling of the crack of the sound of the crack of the bat, the pat, the pound of the glove, everything.
It's amazing to be back.
It's amazing for baseball to be baseball players to be back on a field playing baseball.
Yes, except for Mike Leake and dozen Ryan Zimmerman and Joe Ross, who are the four players so far that have decided not to play in 2020? What impact will they have on the team on their teams.
Mostly, Zimmerman is the most impactful.
We can agree on that, right? Yeah, Definitely being the captain for the Nationals he has.
He's gonna make a big impact, not playing for the team.
Obviously they lost.
Don't this year.
So that's gonna be a big problem for them.
Coming into 2020 and on with the World Series hangover.
I don't think it's gonna affect this much because the break that we had with the virus and everything, but just coming off a World Series losing Riendeau, who was one of their star players and now losing Zimmerman, it's definitely going to put make a big impact on the way this team works and functions in 2020.
Yeah, the thing with Zimmerman, he wasn't a particularly impactful here, but Zimmerman and does.
What Zimmerman is known for now is his off field impact and how much he helps in the locker room in the clubhouse.
They got a young team.
They've got 21 year old one.
So 2122 year old Victor Robles, they're going, they're going.
And then they need that veteran guidance that they're not going to be getting now from Ryan Zimmerman? Yeah, they just need that veteran figure.
You have young stars, you have one.
So is really, really good.
In my opinion, it is probably one.
So it was amazing.
Yeah, he's good.
I don't like him because I'm a Mets fan, but he's this amazing.
You? I'm still upturn area of even so, they still really saw roster.
Oh, this doesn't This should not infected animals on the field very much.
But only everyone only played in 52 games last year and had a three.
Anything like a 3 20 on base percentage.
And with Ross, he had a He had an e r a or five last year and 1/5 of and a fit before six.
I mean, and he went, he walked a lot of matter.
So it's not to him.
It's not gonna be to impact for on the field. You're getting the off.
You're just getting off the field guy.
Then Russ pitched in the World Series.
That's about as much as I say about Joe Ross.
Yeah, way just got There is we just got the results back from the first cycle of tests, and only 1.
2% of tests come back positive.
What? We have to see that.
But we're going to see that number increase.
Yeah, I just think what we'll see, I think, is that as the season goes, as the teams travel more because they're playing at their home ballparks as they begin traveling, I think we'll consistently see some players left and right getting the virus.
So, uh, I won't be surprised if Jeremy Season and now more people come up positive with the virus.
It's it. It's inevitable.
The number will go up.
We only have 31 players.
Just positive with her will be going up.
The major birthdays in baseball today Frank Kenna, uh, moist s Alu to very impactful players to not up.
One of my baseball coach from Frank Tuna is in the seventies, I fear in the nineties.
In the nineties, after in the seventies, we played with 21 years in the major leagues from 1973 to 1993 1 240 games.
He was finished third in Cy Young, voting in 1975 in 1976 obviously, most notably with in California Angels.
You know they is a heck of a player.
And Moises Alou, we all know about Moises Alou is exploits with the with the Montreal Expos, the Houston Astros, Scrabble clubs, the New York Mets about forgetting and team.
Yeah, I'm forgetting a bunch of San Francisco Giants, Um, two games with the Pittsburgh Pirates after getting in his career and the season with the Florida Marlins in which he finished in which he finished tended NBP voting.
Alou was one that was a phenomenal player to his 2000 was family tastic.
Plating is 126 times but hit 30 home runs, 3 55 for 16.
That's I'd call, I'd call it was either his 94 where he had a 1 53 PS plus or is 2000 where he had a 1 51 P.
S was his best seasons.
Yeah, he was, I think, obviously Alu, also known for the Steve Bartman play as he was the left field, all right, to the main event of the night.
We got our empathy award predictions.
We're going to do? We're gonna have three league wide awards, and then we're gonna have the four award and that we're not gloves were not doing silver sluggers.
That would be too much We're going to do.
We're gonna give you a break out player, a comeback player, a fantasy bust, and then we're gonna have Reliever of the year in both leagues.
Rookie of the year in both leagues.
Cy Young in both leaks and M v P in both leaks.
All right, Gets first breakout player eating here.
Okay, um, for me, I was going to go with Mike four.
Who's the first baseman for Yankees? And that's up positions.
That looks like Is he in a play to have Roy? Yeah, but boy is was hurt all last year, and he and he started like, the first, like, 50 Game two is good.
And then he got hurt.
And then through his 1st 165 games, was just as good, if not better than Pete Alonso's 1st 165 years of his career.
So I think that you're gonna see a lot more avoid.
Then you're gonna see him. Mike Ford.
Okay, that's that's your opinion left.
But in addition, Yankee Fan, are you a Yankee fan? Yes.
All right, that explains it.
Well, what's going on? Wait, hold on.
You're gonna say something.
All right, Andy.
So for my breakout player of the year, I had testing era for the Brewers.
Good one are just very solid.
We're gonna need him this year.
He it 303 last year.
19 home runs 49 are the eyes of the 9 30 P.
S just really saw numbers across the board.
And I just think he's going.
He is going to be very vital to the success of the poorest team this year.
Now I want to go care.
But I knew you were going to go with your, uh, so I decided to switch it up a little bit.
I'm going with one of the guys that Yes, I did.
I did mention last week on our breakout players, of course, because if I didn't and that would be in there, really something a little weird there.
I am going with Washington Nationals Relief pitcher Tanner Rainy.
Who? I have fallen in love with his statcast numbers because he throws hard and he throws with a lot and he throws with a great spin rate.
He's a guy that had a bit that had Yeah, he struck out 35% of batters.
His ***** is expected.
Batting average was really low.
So he really didn't You allowed some hard contacts, but he didn't allow contact.
He needs to get his walks down, and he needs to get.
And he needs to start allowing less hard contact.
But with that, I mean, the dude get the dude gets guys to miss this dude, get swing and miss stuff.
So Comeback player of the year in both.
Leak in one week and major league wide.
Yeah, Course obviously.
Okay for me, a guy that, um who had previously been a a good wasn't the great, but he was a good reliever.
And then he got traded to the match and he was he was really bad.
So I went with Edwin Diaz.
Who I think No, no, no, no.
That's not a comeback.
But that's not a comeback player.
And also use not.
And also he was phenomenal before he went to the Mets.
That is not a comeback player, that is, that is a bounce back player.
He was not injured.
Is coming back from injury.
Suspension come back is that is not a bounce back.
Its a player that did not play last year or played a small amount of games.
Oh, yeah, I put a bounce that player to with same pick that, All right, so just just quickly think of a just as I go with my comeback player of the year, you can think you can think of a bounce back of a comeback player here and a guy that a lot of people just keep forgetting about from the Texas Rangers was just traded.
Cory Kluver you and his seven starts last year.
He was pretty bad, but the Fit suggested he still.
He had had three consecutive seasons where he finished top three silent voting and five consecutive seasons where he finished top Penn and Cy Young voting and he still got it.
I think he can definitely still pitch, he's still had he can still throw.
He can still get you still get batters out, I think.
Yeah, the er A last year is high, but he has consistently been one of guys that walks the fewest batters in the league.
He doesn't allow.
He does not allow too much heart, God that obviously last year's down year in seven starts but help, But he'll get back this year.
You start about 12.
Jones will be used to that staff, and he will be the best picture on that stuff and will be a very good.
But you seem like finish top 10 Cy Young voting.
I'm not, but don't mark my words there.
But he very well may, because people forget how good Cooper was, how effective he was.
How many's how many someone whips he had to.
He went back to back.
Someone whips seasons in 18 17 and 18.
Once you got here, you got your coming.
I'm trying Teoh kind of cool.
Um, I think I know.
I think I know who you're going with.
I just have an idea where your farm guy other than when you said, I think I know you're going with.
Are you going with Salvador Perez for a minute? Yeah.
You think you could do that? I e I mean, he had a down year 18 but yeah.
I mean, it is defense. Stilley.
That's the concern with Perez.
Is his defense that catchers still gonna be there? And if it isn't, they d h with a d h him because he's goes in because he's mostly been a average to below average back since 2014.
Yeah. You didn't effort hatcheries? Really good.
But, I mean, he's never anyone.
Hasn't had an on base over 300 since 20 May 13.
I can only find his crew.
Your stats moving? Sorry He didn't play in 2019.
His career batting average wasn't that good either.
Uh, he did hit 141.
Yes, he put him Teoh, You want to see some symmetry? You want to see some symmetry? In 2017 Salvador Perez played 129 games in 2018 playing 129 games in 2017.
He get 27 home runs with 80 every eyes in 2018 27 home runs and 80 r b I's in 2017.
He walked 17 times in 2018.
You walk 17 times.
Every other number is different.
But that's creepy, actually.
One stolen base anything, or you can pull those consistent numbers.
That's freaking on the doctor, too.
I mean, if you if you idiots, if he hits his per 60 years per 1 62 for his career.
87 r B I's I am 30.
Doubles a 4 42 slugging percentage, Really.
Only 4 42 looking for all right.
But, I mean, if he can put up say, like, six home runs and 10 doubles, that's good for a 16 game season for a catcher.
Yeah, dogs are awesome.
Talk to the best.
Yeah, I'm sorry.
I wasn't I didn't find anybody in that short amount of time.
Eso If you just want to skip me on that one, that would be preferred because I probably feel right.
A fantasy bust for 2020.
Yeah, I like so on your visa, but so my fancy.
But I had many charter.
He's really already she was My vanity knows my fantasy bust last year.
Uh, but he to living six.
He did, and I was right.
So yes, but I just think I don't think he's gonna put up better numbers, except I just think he's consistent.
And he's just an overriding player.
Honestly, that's why he's a very good player.
I actually think he's gonna bounce back a little bit this year.
But not to the point.
Uh, not not No, Obviously not.
Oh, so yeah, that's why I have my fancy bust spot.
So I we're seem to go, Actually, people go all the last.
Although, So for me, I was gonna dio Josh Bell of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
So last year, he actually had a really good year Get, um Well, you know, you got a really good first half.
In the end, he had 37 home runs.
I think he had, huh get 100 plus ribbies, which is good.
But I mean, it's good, but it doesn't matter.
Yeah, but I feel like this year he's just depends on where you batten quarter.
R b r b I's are useless.
But what What stands out is the 96 is the 9 36 P.
S with the 1 43 ps.
Plus, he had a great first half last year.
In the first half, he was slugging, use loving 6 48 He had no PS over 1000 in the second half.
O p s of 7 80 Yeah, So I think he I think he just like she might be a better later on pick and fantasy.
But I think if you if the people who want But it take him, I just cause he had a good first half last year I don't think that would be smart.
So I think he's probably gonna be a fantasy bus.
All right? My guy is a guy.
I'm just not buying the hype on Tommy Admin.
Last year, coming up from the minor as a rookie at a at a GOP s, he had 11 homers, 15 stolen bases.
But I just I'm just not buying Tommy Edmund hype.
I don't if it like, it's just This is a gut feeling for me, Tommy.
Edmund is not someone that I drafting fantasy this year.
Uh, eso move onto bigger, real wolves.
So the rial awards.
Okay, let's do it for the national leak reliever of the year we got.
If we don't have it, there are two correct answers here.
I know the two correct answers I put creates the other ones Josh Shader happening.
So yeah, you don't know that. It's not your opinion.
Yeah, you know, I just agitators 1 19 year, right? Well, we'll get to you.
100 watt strikeouts is your 1000.
2 hundreds pitched.
Hey, is, in my opinion, the best reliever in this class going into 2020.
Uh, he is just really, really good.
19 year a which is really solid on, no matter what way you put it, he had 101 strikeouts and sixteens pitch, which is just really saw Austin segmental.
What? It's absolutely mental, which has been able to do Yeah, so he's just insane.
So that's why I have my I got Josh shader within this board.
I have just I've been a huge gosh gator fan since the first moment I saw him.
I saw him pitch.
You got that 96 mile an hour fastball.
It coming out of that low arm thought.
He's six foot three, but he looks like he's six foot seven sometimes, and he simply he's one of them is simply the best reliever in baseball right now.
I don't mean I don't think you can debate that.
He strikes out about 50% of the batters he faces.
He he's brought his walk significantly down.
He's brought he's brought his fifth.
That he is fit wasn't great last year.
But, I mean, it was it was really good.
But, I mean, it wasn't what it waas in 2018 because he because he had a bunch of home runs.
You know what? I don't think I start.
He gave about your home run.
You know what? I don't think he's gonna give up many home runs this year.
They utilize that that they utilized Josh haters so well until the last until the wild card game.
Yeah, s own ego.
What do you think? Yeah, well, I had picked Josh Cater to, and Sam went, like, very in depth, and all his numbers were really good, and I feel like Marquis uses him very well and puts him in the best situations.
Um, Josh Shader can get anybody out, which is, I think, like a pro, like there are some lefties in this league that only can get lefties out.
But he's a guy that can get every single batter pretty much in the league out, out.
So I say that's what makes him like a really special guy.
And that's why I had him winning the reliever of the year.
All right, moving forward.
The American leak.
Really ready reward going first over.
So I had Leon Hendrix for the A's.
Okay, that's a good That's a good one.
I know what I'm Andrew.
Last year over with 25 saves, 124 strikeouts with 0.
96 wit in 85 innings pitch.
So really very, very solid numbers across more, you know, raise 1.
0, which was really is really good, in my opinion, I just think he's really solid leave picture.
And that's why I have, um, at the reliever of the year from the hillsides.
Okay, so I nursed.
Well, you know, s o.
I had our oldest Chapman for the reliever of the year there.
So in my opinion, he can throw Ah, high nineties, low, 100 mile per hour fastball, which is one of the fastest in the league.
And what? Not like, I think I think he's.
I think I think he's second on the Jordan Hicks in that in that category.
Yeah, so, um, he also looks isn't playing this Gehring's injured.
And last year he really developed his slider better, and he started getting more people out with that and throwing it a lot more often.
So I think that is definitely a bonus now that he he went from kind of a one pitch guy, so maybe a to pitch guy, which will definitely help him out.
Last year he had 37 saves, which is a lot, and I think he proud that it matters.
Saves don't matter, either.
Saves, saves their based on how many save situations you're put in.
He has had 37 saves last year.
Do you think that matters? No, because didn't he bust a ton of um anyway, he made have been a lot of things, but yet uh, the sense I got.
Right. That's still a lot of saves, but saves don't matter.
Yeah, well, saves there about how many same situations you're put in.
If you're putting 35 situations, you should You should put up with that 6 27 28 saves.
I would end up with the I I wouldn't be like, you know what I mean? Problems here, you know? I mean, I would I would Yeah.
Obviously we'd all private, and I pretend it's a better talk.
A lot of the batteries because we didn't want to pitch to him exactly so that they wouldn't come back to us.
You have a girl.
So, Sam, what is your ale reliever years now? I wanted to go for I wanted to go for an interesting one. Here.
This is This is more of a This is one of a dark horse pick.
Not that I really not that I think he's actually going to win it.
But I just But I just really wanted Teoh, but I just really This is a guy that I just really wanted to mention in this scenario.
I for me I think he's gonna have a good year.
I think Taylor Rogers gonna have a good year.
I just think that he is striking.
Strikeouts went up.
Last year's walks went down.
Do you think again with him? The homers went up last year because of because, of course, they did.
If he can keep the strikeout walk ratio the way it was last year, there's no one touching him and he's going and you should win this war with the strikeout if the home runs go down.
But he maintains the strikeout walker issue.
I don't think he's going toe.
I don't think he's going.
There was the home runs one I don't that's true, lived extra.
I wound up on every spectrum for most pitches.
Yeah, I'm not saying I think Rod is going to win the award.
I think that it's just a name that I wanted to mention in this conversation.
I really don't I think I think there's a lot of guys out there that could win this Yeah, really, really years having a broad topic over I Let's go toe, let's go to a L rookie of the year.
So for this one, I'm just gonna go first.
I got Louis brother things wrote bad at the good one.
Yeah, he had 3 28 average.
There is your runs with 36 stolen bases last year.
So all in the minors, so all around just really saw numbers on any is a pretty solid center fielder for the White Sox.
I just think he's really gonna fit in while this season.
And I think that with the average in our with that speed, I think it's just a deadly combination roll yet Robert Robert Robert was a phenomenal, phenomenal picture.
Phenomenal outfielder for the for the White Sox organization.
Um, I mean, you could you could Sanick Madrigal could do it could win at that organization.
There's two guys in that organization that really have a good chance of joining and Rober and Madrigal.
But Madrigal is not my pick.
My pick is so for me.
I also had Lewis Ro Bear.
Um so, like Andrew said what? He had phenomenal stats in the minors with a 3 28 average, 32 home runs and 36 stolen bases.
His, um, he's he could use the definitely solid center fielder out there, and I think he probably will get the playing time this year.
And if he does anything similar to what he did in the minors, he's gonna be a really strong candidate.
And, like Andrew said, if he's a guy that can steal bases and hit home runs unset, that's kind of like a deadly combination that will definitely help the white shocks, Um, score a lot of rooms.
As long as he brings his strikeouts down, I think he's gonna be phenomenal and walks up. He needs to bring his walks.
Oppa's well, but he's fantastic.
He was fantastic in the minors last year.
Now, my guys that I really like you went through in this award is Ryan Mount Castle.
But Castle probably won't play much in the majors this year, if at all.
So I have to ask it to go with the 1 80 my pick is Nate Pearson from the Rooter Bronco Blue Jays organization, who pitched very well in three levels in the minors last year.
Fish well, do you need to push pitch well in New Hampshire pitched well in Buffalo, get e pitch I'm City.
It's total last year he pitched.
Let's do that math about about 100 3 innings last year.
101 102 innings last year.
And he had an e r A in in in New Hampshire, where he spent most of his season 2 to 5 90 are struck out 10 batters per nine innings.
He's Yeah, the walks were The walks are a little concerning in New Hampshire, but the walks were quite low in Buffalo and and indeed, so if you if you want a bet if you want to bet the dad you like here for a pitch for initial tape here Yeah, I agree with you on that pick.
So for the entire working in the year National League record year, Okay, go.
I have someone who I personally think, uh, he might be.
I don't know if he's taking the rookie given in September, so I think he's just kind of in that, Considering Iraqi, it's Gavin looks 34 five against the rookie.
He only played, I think, really good seven day special vehicle yet 3 47 with the 1.
28 in the minors last year on.
Then he came up in September, and I just think he's really saw player.
He has good average.
She has good power.
He's just a good all around player.
In my opinion, s o.
I think he is just one of the better candidates for another rookie of the year.
Yeah, looks with love locks.
Is the popular candidate that everyone seems to be going with everyone.
If you did, you have it.
E did strike out of it.
But he was Certainly He's certainly a guy out there that Yes, he looks a lot in a any four reset.
And, um, if you know, the 4 21 on base in the minors last year, so he definitely knows how to get on base.
But Gavin Lux is not my thick.
Yeah, well, do you want me to know My pick is yes.
Please, please, please.
Yeah, Well washed again.
I also picked gaffe in luck because he really tried it after me.
And he had phenomenal miners numbers like Andrew said, And, um, he also when he came up, he only hit, like, to 40 and had two home runs.
But I think, but that was only in 23 games played, and I honestly think with the playoff experience he got, that will definitely help him coming in to next season.
Having a chance to play a couple of games in the playoffs off and just understand some of those more higher pressure situations well, I think, will greatly affect his play during the regular season.
All right, my pick is a guy that has more experience than any other rookie.
Well, not making experience, but a base.
Kogelo Akiyama from the Cincinnati Reds.
A guy I've been saying is gonna win working here and, like, I just think that he's had he's had great seasons in Japan last but the last five seasons.
Yeah, he had a down year 16 and slight down your last year.
GOP mess was just 64.
Slow was down, but he still hit 20 homers.
He's played every game the last five seasons, even played 144 which is one more than the Schedule I who leaked in and he's had yet that 3 92 on base percentage last year.
He's got he's got good plate just when he just needs stick down two strikeouts and he can have a and he can have a refuting your type season because the human brings in extra bases.
Yeah, So what s Oh, I definitely agree with you on that, Uh, he's someone I believe has been kind of overlooked with a little bit considered.
Gavin loves being more popular, but I I'm not nothing against cabin looks.
I really like Gavin Looks one, don't you? Sayang goes for signing before, maybe waas nationally and you get Cy Young.
There's a bunch of answers you can go with.
But who do you think? I think because I met Sam and Jacob wrong their back to back to back.
He had probably I think, in my opinion, he has the best offense he's had behind.
I think just that she can carry off.
But that doesn't matter.
Why are you hiring increased Sit? Why do you even have to mention the offense? I don't care about his win loss.
Total no one if he could go open story and if he had a And if you're good enough peripherals, I heat seekers still a sigh up 1.
73 virgin and every year and then just the one loss.
Teresi was Think 500 or something, but he had to 43 R E r.
Last year, which was, I believe, second major.
Yeah, 200 years.
Good strikeouts, Which is very so anything.
Yeah, 01 Nice seven with, uh, he's just very, very solid.
And in my opinion, he's just He is one of the best, if not the best picture and unique at the moment.
He's just been dominant throughout, I think tough starts of the season, but really brought it back down.
So I think you just my pick for the NL.
All his numbers are great.
So, yeah, that's where I have become.
Yeah, so I also had take up the Graham because I agreed with its on Andrew that he's just probably a top five picture right now. Number one.
No debate made a clerical, but there, But he's one or he's too.
It is not top five.
He's one or he's too, and I have him one.
Well, if he's one of two, he's also top five.
Well, yeah, but don't say top five.
Stay top to find.
That's like calling.
That's like calling Mike trout atop three.
Player. He's number one.
Well, yeah, it was, uh Well, now I know what everyone on everyone else I pick is is I don't know.
You don't Just cause I think he's the best pitcher in baseball doesn't mean I think he's gonna win Cy Young. No.
I knew you were gonna go.
Jacob the ground.
So, yeah, I think that he's, um he's he's gonna win the n l Cy own.
And Andrew said a lot of his staff, so I won't repeat it.
But one stat is he had an opponent batting average of, um because if you're limiting the guys is batting average.
So they're not getting a lot of hits off you, then That means they can't score a lot of runs on.
So I think that it was a good staff form.
He pitched 204 innings in 32 games played so that that's good.
That's like, I think roughly like 6.
4 innings average per game, which is pretty good for this day and age.
It's actually really good for this day and age where some pictures don't even go past five on a normal basis.
So you only allowed 55 earned runs and 154 heads, which are both really good.
And he had he averaged 5.
8, pretty much six K's per every base on ball.
So he just has all around really good asked like the e r A, um, K's and webs and then also some of his not so popular stats are also very solid.
So I think that makes him and I think he he can definitely repeat what he's done.
So I think he will.
What's that? What stature you calling? Not so popular.
I don't care about a staff popularity popular doesn't matter.
Yeah, well, some people don't look at certain stats and that Yep, that's true.
But they're not not popular that are just that there is less used them that's over, baby misunderstood or or under used.
Under used is the word I'd use.
Just say advanced stats.
It's a best I take offense to this stuff.
Come on, come on.
Your better than I know that Walker popular's my Cyan pick.
Yeah, I I've been saying take of the ground for a long time.
But you know what I was thinking? Everyone's gonna say to ground I should be different.
I should say, Walker Buehler, a guy that a guy is 2018 was fantastic.
Is 2019 was a small step back, but it was still fantastic.
The X Whoa Ba has been very good.
The world has been very good.
All these numbers are in the top, unearned the top 25% of the week and then the spin rate.
The stats spin rate, though, is so amazing from Walker Buehler.
He throws the fastball at 97.
He throws the slider 87 the cutter in 93 to curve it 81.
So he stopped three distinct speeds, and he can mix them up really well.
The fastball is most used.
We'll throw the slider will throw the country a throw.
The terrible throw the sinker.
You want to try and shut that off, and I'll say that, and I don't think you should throw the change very often.
The fastball 205 batting average against to 17 Expect about average, but the real pieces is not so this is repertoire, comes with that's liar, where which has just a to 41 to 37 x whoa ba against and no one you don't you don't hit that slider heart.
You do not hit his slider and I really I really like a slider.
You just I think he needs to throw it more often, to be honest with you.
Use one. My top.
And also, let's do a L. Cy Young.
I'm pretty sure a lot of people picked this Teoh.
Uh, I think Gerrit Cole, I think he's one of the better best pitchers in the ale.
Is not the best pitcher in the league. Maybe.
No, it's not the best he is. He is.
He is the best picturing ale.
Last year, His fastball really high nineties.
He strikes out a lot of ADDers had 326 strikeouts last year.
It is your 3260.
89 whip, so just overall he's very, very solid.
All right yet very highest strikeout totals over 300.
So I just think Gerrit Cole is a very, very solid, very solid picture for this.
Using calls my minute yet.
Yeah, calls my pick too last to see his his twenties, 2016 17 Zari is 15 16 17.
There were good seasons.
He was a very is a very good pitcher in the National League with the Pirates.
But they stress the pitch to contact approach cool and that I pitch to contact Pitcher.
As you could tell by that 35% strikeout rate in 2018 and the obnoxious 40% strikeout rate in 2019 he simply is because he is the second best pitcher in baseball behind only drink it ground.
Ah, lot of people think he's the best pitcher in baseball, and I understand that those people who say that because he is something disease phenomenal, he strikes guys out at a ridiculous rate.
The spin rate is there.
The ex rebel was phenomenal after the woeful is phenomenal, the expected something they expect about having all phenomenal the best. Walk up that 97.1.
The average against 1 66 The slider comes in at eight.
At 89 the curve comes into 82 so event three distinct speeds.
Those that three Those are three phenomenal pitches.
Yeah, well, you know, those are three of the best pitchers in major league baseball.
Yeah, well, for me, I also had, um, Gerrit Cole.
Oh, and all his staff are just phenomenal the last two years.
And as I said, even in 2015 16 and 17 he wasn't.
Everybody was good.
And that and I think Sam made a really amazing point on how the Pirates were Maybe not using him, right, I So I He is the best in my He's the best strikeout pitcher in baseball.
Oh, I mean, you can't deny that.
He just broke the all time.
He just broke the single season record for strikeouts per nine innings amongst qualified starting pitchers.
Yeah, so he did go feet like he pitched in 33 games, he had 200 cooperating, which is average is around 6.
5 in a for games of those, that's really good.
But he had a Sam said he had 326 strikeouts, which is I absolutely phenomenal.
That broke the record, and no snow that I got for nine broke the record.
So strikeout, strikeout.
The single season strikeout record is is it's not that it's okay.
That record will not be broken.
Who holds them? It's like someone know from a law.
It's like four is like five.
Well, from like 1997 I think back on the pitcher's pitch in our meetings.
And then if you want to exercise a pitching, the extras, you know what it is because, um e I think it's yes.
Um, Matt Kilroy, 513 in 18 86 yet it's never gonna be broken that and you know what? The Houses rookie season.
You know what? He wasn't particularly good that year.
You really had a 101 e r a plus.
So that's he was an average.
He just he just pitched.
He just fished 583 innings and strikeouts per nine, which at that point, it was enough for 513 strikeouts.
E he was he was fine.
And he wasn't that you would get a very, very good yeah, with a very good fit to six.
But, I mean, you'd expect him to have a very good fit with that strikeout rate.
Yeah, you're anybody's led three s o l.
We're We're starting our hey, how Yep.
Still my piece on air.
What? Because my life Trout.
I got my trap like drop Not no explanation needed.
Let's move on my trap.
Mike Trout is so good that we don't even need to explain anything.
Just show District.
I'll show you that 70 career war I'll show you.
That's basically what nine War Percy season.
That's basically what he's been putting up, all right. And L m v p.
Final word of the day.
I just wanted to just, uh, pick a different player.
New player. Into the league.
I picked Mookie Betts.
He hated to 95 25 20 runs Any R B I's in 9 15 P. S.
So I think he's just a really it.
But you're gonna mention Mookie Betts.
You better discuss that 2018.
Yeah, he won the M V p.
Or maybe then he was just a beast.
I didn't need to pull this stuff.
I could do that for.
In three court, he batted 3 46 that season, he had a 4 30 would on day 6 40 slugging 32 dinners There, 30 stolen bases in 136 games is 162 game based up here was I was like, What? Um, 14 homers, 37 stolen bases, thrifty, like 60 doubles.
Something like that. I don't know.
Hey would have been.
And then he put up.
6 b war in 614 blade appearances, and he's also the best defender of right field in baseball.
Yeah, but he's not my pick.
But PICO, who's your pick? Yeah, and l m v p.
I certainly think that it Erin Otto gets hot.
If Aaron gets hot, those numbers could be outrageous.
Playing in Colorado.
So for him, just like last year, he batted 3 15 which was first in the NL has one, which was also fits in the NFL.
And he had 100 and 18 ribbies, which was tied for fourth in the N N.
So those are three top far.
It is in those categories in the NL.
And then he had 185 hits, which was ninth in the MLB, which is is really good.
So he did really good.
Also, he's an outstanding fielder at third base.
He had ah 2nd 2nd best defense if their ba*****t in baseball match happens.
Know anyone better? Yeah.
So he had he had a 9 80 fielding.
Know if you're safe, you're excited.
Get off my show.
Use the RTR out above average range.
Factor those into four stats.
Do not ever, ever, ever on my show or anywhere mentioned fielding percentage that is your one and only warning.
10 assists? No, that's above average and range factor and range factor is kind of right, and the easiest ones use.
You can write those down, so I will just let you move.
I will just let you go.
We should have Hey, get 18 DRS last year.
Okay, my VP pick.
Here's a guy that I really that I think is one of the most fun players to watch in major League baseball.
I think you need to know the guy is Ronald a ****.
Where Junior, I think that Acuna is going to be is gonna be simply phenomenal this year.
I just think that if he ups that if he ups his what if he brings down and strike out right? The homers and stolen bases will speak for themselves, and he's fine and he's pretty **** good defensively as well.
He put up 11 DRS last year.
He put up a lot put up a bunch of use.
Er, I think that he's a great I think it is a great defender of defense, of defender of the outfield, and I think that he's a great hitter as well.
I mean, you can't deny that he's got he's had get airs.
He didn't believe in.
The parents say that he and he gets to the fit a lot.
You their leadoff guy, and he's and he's going to be their talisman for the next note and 15 years he's going to face that organization in Atlanta and steals bases.
He hits Stingers, he walks a decent amount and in the strikeout rate is a little bit high.
But with a Kunle you're getting, you're getting a guy that know that puts the barrel on the ball, hits it really hard, and he's just 22 years old.
Yeah, uh, he's He's one of more fun players to watch.
One way got one trivia obsessed with. Here we go.
Question number 2495.
No, we're not doing that one.
We're not doing that question random.
It doesn't matter.
It's not a baseball question.
Question Number 5 53 by the way.
5 53 of the American League on base percentage record.
Ted Williams, 1941.
Number 5 53 Who was the only player to steal four bases in a league championship series? Boon.
Is it Joe Morgan, Rickey Henderson, Steve Sax or Ron Gant? I don't know, actually.
Don't know this.
You think it's Morgan is not.
It is Ricky Anderson.
No, but nobody would. Nobody would eat.
Nobody should be surprised by being Rickey Henderson.
