All right, all right, Let's give this another shot the most.
00:00:09
Mitch NB A story out there a little bit of Atlanta Hawks.
00:00:13
I've had a had a good couple of days with doing teams that don't get as much spotlight.
00:00:17
I talked about the Pistons a couple days ago.
00:00:19
They've now made, um, toy Weaver, the general manager over there and now some to do a little bit of Ah, I don't know.
00:00:28
I like this story When when I saw it today and I just I wanted to share my thoughts on this a little bit, But first, want to wish everybody wealth, hope, every staying safe and ah, and just staying healthy as a whole? Um, let's get into this story.
00:00:42
I think it's pretty wild and and just different.
00:00:45
I don't know.
00:00:46
I don't really know how it's explain it, but with all the news that's going on in the world about the bubble about Disneyland, about Corona virus cases spiking in in Florida, the the Hawks and John Collins specifically have had a little discussion about what they're gonna look like.
00:01:04
Obviously, they're not gonna be playing in the tournament this year more obviously, the playoffs after that.
00:01:09
So they're looking ahead to next season.
00:01:11
They'll be picking presumptively pretty high in this year's draft, and they have an interesting roster.
00:01:17
As it stands, they made a big trade at the trade deadline, which landed them Clint Capela, who is a Rim running center.
00:01:25
Somebody that overlaps, I would say a little bit with with John Collins.
00:01:29
And what John Collins, even though he shot about, you know, well above 40% after the All Star break he still overlaps with John Collins is best skill.
00:01:40
So John Collins, very smart player, has worked on his game a lot since he came into the week.
00:01:47
Um, in a way, that kind of reminds me of the way Blake Griffin was when Blake Griffin first, you know, really started extending What What he does is Layer.
00:02:01
So you know, this guy comes in the time of Blake Griffin.
00:02:05
Right now he's this supremely athletic player.
00:02:09
Um, you know was on SportsCenter all the time for poster highlights, we have the one on Kendrick Perkins.
00:02:17
Ah, a whole bunch of different dunks that he laid on poor centers that got in his way.
00:02:22
The MAS golf highlight and as he last in the league and really tries to carve out a role for himself and be not only just a very, you know, exciting all star level player, but a contributor on a really, really good Clipper steam next to somebody like Chris Paul, who offensively, I think, has some some shared attributes with Trey Young.
00:02:44
Um, he expands his game a as, and this took a couple of seasons.
00:02:49
Probably what, like seven or six or seven seasons, I would say he expands his game is a jump shooter to the point where he's doing, you know, all all out step backs in Detroit.
00:02:58
But even in Clipper land he was doing, you know, he had a nice solid, I would say like 18 to 20 footer.
00:03:04
But the other thing that he does is he really molds himself into being a 200.4.
00:03:09
Ah ah, lot of people didn't see that.
00:03:11
I mean, Blake Griffin, as as much as we look back on his highlights now, people were split on him not in this fact that I think that people didn't like him.
00:03:20
But I thought that people, I mean, he had this crazy crazy perception of being one dimensional of just being just a dunker.
00:03:29
And he was able to mould his game and really become one of the higher I Q offensive players, somebody that has completely transitioned into just a totally different player, even after a bunch of injuries.
00:03:44
So John Collins John Collins wants to move his game, and it isn't because of injuries.
00:03:49
It's because he's a high i Q.
00:03:51
Guy, and he understands how he needs to fit in with this Hawks offense potentially.
00:03:58
So I'm gonna read a couple quotes and then I I'll talk about a little bit what I think of this.
00:04:03
And, uh, not even that I, whether I agree or think it's something he should, you know, that he can do.
00:04:09
I just kind of have, ah, an overall statement on this.
00:04:12
So, uh, reading these these quotes, he says, For me having another dude that's in the same level of athlete that I am, it's going to be amazing to sort of know how to throw him open and know how he wants to catch the ball.
00:04:25
I've been working on throwing lobs and trying to get him open above the rim because I know that's what I like to dio.
00:04:31
That's what he likes to do.
00:04:32
So we can speak the same language.
00:04:34
Um, but and then this is just talking about things that he wants to improve on as a I guess, a growing player in this league and someone that presumptively wants to be not only just an All Star, but someone that's a real contributor.
00:04:47
It kind of like a Blake Griffin on a good promising Atlanta team, he says.
00:04:52
Ball handling would be one just trying to tighten it up and get it crisp, watching film and seeing how my teammates like to catch the ball, seeing what their tendencies are helps.
00:05:01
There's so many things, a multitude of things.
00:05:03
I feel like getting lower.
00:05:04
And, like I said, figuring out how I like to pass, figure out what my strengths are.
00:05:09
Do I like overhand underhanded timing? There's a bunch of factors that go in into it.
00:05:13
Film is probably the first place where I'll start, and then we can go from there so low.
00:05:19
Um, I think of any n ba skill, maybe even more than than something like, you know, shooting.
00:05:29
You can train yourself as as a as a professional basketball player to have a really nice handle.
00:05:37
I think it's probably and, you know, again like I'm not in here doing these workouts with these players, but it just seems like it's the easiest skill to build.
00:05:47
So if you take like the Celtics, right, these guys, they hit another level this year and exceed, I think, a lot of people's expectations.
00:05:55
Because not only does Jayson Tatum start to be able to figure out how to get to the rim, um, he's really tightened up his handle.
00:06:02
He's not getting stripped as much, especially when he's posting up on doing things like that.
00:06:07
Jaylen Brown also greatly tightened his handle.
00:06:09
They have two young players immediately see more success by simply just working on their ball handling.
00:06:17
I again like I just think it's a skill that people don't talk about enough and it's something that you can really really make a difference on as a young player right away.
00:06:28
I think the pay off is a little bit more immediate, then say even something like shooting.
00:06:34
It's definitely like the instant gratification skill set, if you will.
00:06:37
The n b a so, yeah, I mean, I like this.
00:06:41
I mean, I'll give you an example like there's a guy I cover.
00:06:45
The Nets said it a 1,000,000 times.
00:06:47
There's a guy preseason last year.
00:06:49
Rodeos, quirks.
00:06:51
Who is a who was and still is a young, exciting forward that the Nets took in the second round off the will was at the 2018 draft.
00:07:03
Um, and he's this.
00:07:05
He looked at certain points of his rookie season like a real deal.
00:07:10
At least three tool, maybe four.
00:07:13
Tool, maybe even five to a player, Um, and just somebody that it seemed like he had a lot of promise comes into Media Day has this statement about how he wants to be like a Draymond green of this Nets team.
00:07:30
And it just seemed like, you know, not even that that the idea was bad.
00:07:34
But for that specific Nets team, I don't really think that that skill was ever required.
00:07:40
And in saying that and having this this whole ordeal of coming in with these expectations of playing this giant ball handling role, he saw his minutes dwindle almost immediately.
00:07:54
Ah, and again he had some other things going on But, I mean, for this Hawks team, I think this is a different situation.
00:08:02
You have John Collins.
00:08:03
He recognizes, Hey, this is gonna be a weird fit between me and Clint Capela because of the overlap and skill sets.
00:08:11
So so, in a way, like he recognizes that.
00:08:15
Hey, I need to grow this skill and do this for the betterment of my team.
00:08:21
If it works out great, I've added another layer to my game.
00:08:24
If not oh well, it's still worthwhile doing like I think it's it's Ah, it's a move by necessity rather than you know, just whatever.
00:08:34
It's not just an awful whim or something like that.
00:08:37
I think that he's understanding the gravity of what's required for him for the team.
00:08:41
So I like this story.
00:08:44
I think it's very interesting to watch.
00:08:46
It actually really makes me like John Collins more so than I have in the past.
00:08:51
I think this year was actually a big a big year for him in a lot of ways.
00:08:57
Um, just growing outside of that molds of just being, you know, a tremendous athlete, a great rim runner.
00:09:05
A.
00:09:06
You know, somebody that's a pest on the on the offensive glass.
00:09:10
This is how you make yourself stick in this league.
00:09:12
Um, you know, you can average 20 is as a young player, and and just by being purely athletic, the way he is is like this, Really.
00:09:21
I mean, once a draft type of guy where you just he's just supremely athletic.
00:09:26
But you know, that can fade fast, depending upon how you handle yourself is an MBA player.
00:09:33
So, yeah, I think that this is it.
00:09:36
This is something to monitor.
00:09:38
I applaud him for having that recognition, and it honestly makes the Hawks a lot more interesting.
00:09:46
Trey Young is a very enticing player to watch.
00:09:49
If John Collins is able to grow this part of his game, Um, you could be looking at like a little bit of a lob city type of feel, at least on offense.
00:09:58
The defense, they gotta figure out.
00:10:00
But on offense, you got the past first point guard the point forward and, you know, in a rim running shot blocking center, there's an outline of it.
00:10:14
Can can Kevin Herder be the JJ Red****? We'll see.
00:10:17
Can they get some wing talent, maybe like a real like.
00:10:21
And they have, um, some of their wings grow into, ah, much better.
00:10:27
You know, at least at that time, Matt Barnes or whoever they plugged in it, that small forward role that they never really figured out? Uh, I don't know.
00:10:35
So that's the next step for them.
00:10:37
But I like what they're building over there.
00:10:39
I've been skeptical in the past, and I think that for them having one of their two best players A be willing to make a sacrifice and be be willing to grow for the betterment of the team is a really, really good sign.
00:10:55
It also you have to keep in mind he's gonna be hunting for a big extension.
00:10:59
So if he's able, I mean, this is a total sinker swim type to think.
00:11:03
If he's able to nail this and he really is able to grow this game, then I know and it's It's a weird market right now, but that raises the asking price a great deal.
00:11:13
So it does behoove him as well.
00:11:14
If, of course, this works out.
00:11:16
So I'm curious to see what happens next.
00:11:18
Um, I think the Hawks are a fun team.
00:11:20
People have been excited about them for a while, and now they just get more and more interesting.
00:11:26
That makes them one level just a little more enticing.
00:11:29
A little more exciting with that signing off.

00:00:19

00:00:42
I think it's pretty wild and and just different.
00:00:45
I don't know.
00:00:46
