the first day of the 2010 N.
C tournament, probably the best single day in first round history.
C. Double tournament week.
I've been watching the live watch the entire tournament.
Been watching it for the past month or so.
Here's the notebook.
Got all the information.
So here's what I'm doing in this video.
Okay? So first round, I'm gonna I got my top 10 games and I rant.
And for those of you, better new When I watch a game, I do like a plus minus scoring system.
And then at the end of it, I give the game a rating.
Eso think of it like, uh, you know, grating a movie.
You know how a movie gets like three stars? That's how I grade a basketball game or football game.
I have, ah, a scoring system that I use so without further do some context background to what was going on in this tournament, this was a great first round.
That first day was outstanding.
Eso On that first day, five double digit seeds won their tournament games.
We had seven games decided by three points or fewer.
So seven of the 16 3 points or fewer, That's almost half of your games.
It was outstanding.
Eso I blocks all these games back pretty much in man.
I I couldn't believe like, how good some of the basketball really waas eso without further do I? I guess I'm just gonna go from my notebook and and see what we got.
So I probably haven't watched these first round games in a month.
So the first round constitutes for literally half of the games in the tournament, because you have What do you got you got? How did they have play? I didn't watch any of the playing games.
By the way, if they had the playing games, I don't care about playing games.
Um, but back then, I don't know if they had it for the for the double digit seeds.
I think they just had it for, like, the 16 seats.
So there's normally 63 games in the tournament.
Ah, but since they, you know, added more teams Ah, I think back then and might have been 64 65.
Right now we're at 67.
So, um, there we go.
All right? so top 10 games.
Um, that I have.
So before, before we even get into some of the games.
What did I want to discuss? Is there something I wanted to discuss? All right. Whatever.
I'll just go into the into the top 10.
All right? So number 10 game and I have on here was number four Purdue against number 13.
Sienna, remember this game very vividly because this this was a Tory I man was Robbie Hummel hurt in this tournament.
See, already forget the details of what happened, but, um Sienna, the Sienna Saints in 2009 they they got to the second round of the tournament.
Ronald Moore had a new order of double onions.
Um, and then this next season, you know, they got back to the tournament and the Saints were regarded by many to be the team that would win their first round game.
What? That didn't really happen, Obviously, because Purdue won won the game, have so many games here.
I can't even find it right now.
So, Purdue and Sienna Ah, So this this game ended with 72 to 64.
I had Purdue plus eight in my scoring.
So they won the game by eight possessions.
It was 72 to 64.
So that score kind indicates that they won by four possessions instead of eight.
But I had, you know, eight possessions.
I rated it two and 3/4 stars.
So that's what I had.
Ah, what happened was I have here in the in this game.
So Perdue Perdue got off to a slow start they wanted.
They were one of nine from three in the first half, but they made +43 pointers within the 1st 8 minutes of the second half.
Each one Maurin company that it was what we had each one Mawr who were their starters and did Johnson on their team.
Uh, we're not yet Jawan Johnson keeping Grant Corey Kraemer each one, Maurice One more is the guy I remember. Yes.
So this was they didn't have Robbie Hummel.
So Robbie humble and they were.
And ah, Christiana was a 13 seed.
They probably weren't really a 13 seed, but that's what they were.
So there you go 70 to 64 per do plus eight.
They win the basketball game number nine.
I have Villanova and Robert Morris.
This was a game at Villanova.
Won in overtime.
Ah, this was one of the first games t tip off the tournament.
I think it was the second game.
Uh, second or third game. So there you go.
It was in Providence, and this was a game where Villanova really, really struggle.
Really, really struggled from the field.
Uh, now I raided this game is three stars.
Was it a three star game? Probably not, because it really wasn't well played at all.
But I put it in the in the top 10 here because it was it was a game. I went to overtime.
Robert Morris hung around Verne Lundquist Burn.
Lundquist almost had a stroke.
Uh, and the ending of the game was pretty crazy.
But the first, like I'd say, 40 minutes or so, is very, very sloppy.
Turnovers galore, but sick.
I write down the turnovers here.
Ah, so Scotty Reynolds Okay, here we go.
He started one of 14 from the field, but he was 13 of 14 from the foul line.
And late free throws is how Villanova actually got back into this game.
They were down 55 to 49 with about four minutes left.
They came back and use the foul line.
So I guess they so rental.
Aggressive, attacking the 10 and stuff.
And because he was selling for a lot of jump shot.
Scotty Reynolds of Villanova, by the way, For for those of you, uh, I don't know what I'm talking about.
Um, this this was, Ah, Villanova team back then that was still in the precipice of trying to break through that glass ceiling.
So you remember after the state they lost to ST Mary's and in tournaments after, you know they would disappoint in the in the opening rounds.
But obviously, Jay Wright has figured all that out because he's 1 to 2 ah, championships.
But this was not a good performance by Villanova.
See, here's the thing about these 2 15 matchups.
When you have the 15 seed win in most of the time, it's because the two seed, you know isn't really playing that well.
So Robert Morris was able to hang around.
They turned the ball over.
But I have 1919 turnovers I wrote down for them and there was four minutes left.
So they might have had over 20 turnovers in this game and they almost wanted.
So this was an instance where the two seed wasn't playing well, but the 15 seed wasn't exactly playing well either.
So is this game really? Should have been in the top 10 of mine by rankings, but, um, I put it in there because of how the game concluded on how crazy it got at the end.
Ah, and very low quis.
Um I love this commentary in this game.
All right, Number eight, number eight.
All right, so this was a game that went into an extra section Texas and and Wake Forest.
So you had some MBA talent of Wake Forest? It waas on me.
I got too many games in my notebook, man.
Okay, here we go.
So if you remember, they had Al Farouq Aminu ish Smith.
Uh, and let's see, plus four.
So I Texas is as plus four.
Okay? No, no, my Wake Forest Plus for Okay.
But this was a game that that went to overtime.
Ah, and you know, I didn't think it was like that well played of a game.
When I When I look a well played games, what do I What do I look for? For example, um, honestly, good ball book.
I want to see the ball being shared.
I don't want to see, like, isolation ball where you just give the ball to a guy and he's just taking somebody.
Want one? No, I want to see a team run its offense.
I want to see good ball movement.
I want to see good defense.
Um, you know, for example, like, I want to see something where that ball is being whipped around the perimeter.
But the defense is still in point and moving with the ball, and, you know, you're still able to get good contests on the shot, so the ball is moving freely.
But the defense is also doing a good job so that that's kind of what I'm looking for.
I don't want to see bad basketball where you're turning the ball over a lot where you know you're you're taking ill advised shots.
I mean, it's it's bad basketball when you're taking ill advised shots and then the defense isn't playing well or you might have an open shot after, like, one pass, because the defense isn't playing well, but you're not knocking down the shots.
So, um, this is, uh this is something that feels self talks about with, you know, when he talks about his Kansas team, he likes the ball being moved from side to side.
Right? Get it from the left side.
You want to move to the right side When you move the ball side, decide it's easier to take because you're moving the defense.
So these air anyway, I got kind of got off point there.
But you know how to get into what for? That's what I look for.
So Villanova Robert Morris got three stars.
Texas Wake Forest Got three stars.
An example of a game that was a blowout.
But I wrote I rated three stars Cornell and Temple.
Cornell was a 12 seed in this tournament and they got to the Sweet 16.
They they were able to win two games. They'd be temple.
Then they beat Wisconsin in the second round before being vanquished by Kentucky.
But this this corn lt was really, really fun to watch.
They actually their offense kind reminds me a little bit of Sixers because they have a lot of dribble handoffs that they utilize with with the high posts and stuff that from what I remember, I was watching them play, Uh, they they had a great shooter by the name of Ryan Whitman that they had a big guy inside by the name of Jeff Foot.
And they they move the basketball really, really well.
They they were really, really fun.
Watch when I watched them place.
Let's see, where's game? It got too many games in this.
I got a whole notebook filled game.
So my apologist case of Cornell Cornell came into the game best three point shooting team in the country.
Temple was one of the best in defending the three.
And, uh, Cornell in the first half was actually just to nine from beyond the arc.
But second half they got going.
Ryan Whitman, 45 from 359 and the second half was Cornell from three.
Temple was shooting 59% and was trailing by 15 which is showed how well Cornell was playing offensively.
How well that ball was moving.
How wells the offense is being executed so This was a blowout where you know, Cornell? 1 78 65 plus 12 months scoring.
But I really enjoyed how they played in this game.
And, you know, Thistle is the best game that they played in the tournament.
Even though they won two games, this was the better one of the two, I thought So.
Corn elf the big red, uh, number six on my list.
We got Wisconsin and Wofford, Wisconsin, and Wofford as we got somebody backing off, vacuuming upstairs.
So no does decency knowing that I'm, you know, making a video here.
Like, Come on, Wisconsin.
Uh, trying Asai flip to this game.
So this was the first tournament appearance for Wofford in school history.
If you remember there, actually, in the tournament couple, I think it was last year.
They were in a seven seed.
They want a game before losing in the second round.
Remember they This was a low scoring games, was a grinder and Wisconsin, you know, kind of, uh, pulled away at the end, I think was like, 53 to 49.
Uh, so that that was rated ah three stars as well.
Checking in at number five.
So we're in the top five now.
And all these games were three stars or higher.
Um, so Vanderbilt, Murray State, this isn't this is an example where Murder State, One basketball game.
But I actually had Vanderbilt winning in the possessions.
Eso This was an instance where the team that won the game didn't win in my score.
And, uh, you know, why do I do this sort of thing sometimes? Well, sometimes I do it all the time.
But why? Why Why do I keep score like this? It actually helps me keep track of when you're watching a team throughout the season.
And it allows you to kind of compare two other teams.
And you see, if one team beat a certain team by this many possessions Hominy possessions Is this other team beaten by, Um So as I go on through the season, you know, through college season or an M B a season, uh, I I will keep track like this.
I do it for the NFL to, um as I'm just wasting time.
I was flipped through it, trying to look for my Vanderbilt Murray staking.
Okay, so Murray State Murray State all five of their starters average tent was point per game.
This was the game where Murray State, one of the buzzer who hit the shot.
The bus was, um, the narrow Thomas.
So he had a pull up right wing jumper at the buzzer.
It was 66 65 Murray State, but I had Vanderbilt plus four in my possessions.
So that's that's kind of interesting.
Uh, this was This is this is the only game in my in the top 10 where the team that loss was ahead in the possessions so close game on.
This was a game.
It's not like Vanderbilt was up in this game.
Let's see, I have here they So between eight minutes and four minutes, let's say 58.
There are 58 56 of 6.
Those, of course leads in seven minutes in the first half.
So Murray State was in control in this game on the scoreboard.
Um what in terms of my scoring, Vanderbilt was actually buy. Couple.
So this was this is a pretty good game.
From what I remember, this was one of the first game of the point of it.
So this was a while ago that I watched it already.
First game of the tournament is number four on my list.
BYU in Florida Jimmer Fredette one My favorite players of all time.
Reminded me a little bit, at least in terms of the jump shot.
Larry Bird, How you just pull up? I thought Jr was gonna be something in the end.
I I really like Jimmer.
General was my dude, So let's see, um, you have so Florida Florida was down by 13 points in this game and they didn't turn the ball over for very, very long stretch.
Just how they were able to overcome this deficit.
So this was a double overtime game, But that be why you want are.
But Florida was able to come back.
So BYU was up by more than by 13 points with less than 12 minutes left Play.
This was during, uh, here, Florida.
Six straight shots.
Okay, so, Jimmer for debt.
You remember Jimmer? Uh, so this was this was the year before they were the three seed.
There were the three seed in 2011.
But 2011 they they lose in the second round.
No, they got to the Sweet 16.
They lost while it was the floor in the Sweet 16.
I think that's what it waas Alright.
Ah, so this game I gave 3/4 stars.
We got Michigan State and New Mexico State.
Michigan State played in a lot of good games in the store.
A lot of good games we're going to see in the second round.
Michigan State, Maryland.
That's gonna be We're gonna talk about that game, the next video that I do.
Uh, what else? The they played Ah, what was who they playing? Sweet? Well, the Elite eight was Tennessee, and I remember the 1st 4 minutes of that Tennessee Michigan staking was absolute.
Madness was 14 14 after the 1st 4 minutes since both teams just like I would miss, uh, Michigan State.
Michigan State beat Northern Iowa in the Sweet 16.
That was a well played game That was a 59 matchup on both teams.
Played well that go.
So Michigan State with a bunch of really good games, they were close.
It was a close game here with New Mexico State.
New Mexico State, the Abbey's This has been a team that has been trying to win a first round game, seemingly for literally last deck.
1000 dead, even trying to win for a long, long time.
This is a This was a great opportunity for them to potentially win, but, uh, Michigan State was able to prevail.
I'll tell you what. This might not have been a good video.
I'm spending more time flipping pages than actually talking about these games.
Uh, okay, so let's see what happened in this one.
I remember New Mexico State.
So this this is a team.
Uh, that's what this was possible.
There's a lot of athletes are see and they're about, I think if I remember correctly there about pressuring the basketball, using their athletes, I just got overwhelmed.
You I wrote it down.
If I remember group about standing athletes playing basketball, okay.
Yeah, they want it.
Okay, so they're a team that wants to scramble the game.
That's what I wrote down.
Scramble the game.
Outstanding athletes playing basketball.
So guys that are, you know, kind of still trying to figure out how to play the game.
But using their athleticism, reflection steals.
Oh, Gil and water, I just wrote down.
Get So there's a guy in New Mexico State.
His name's guild water couldn't even tell you what his first name Waas trying to look. And I can tell you.
But this guy, Guillain Water, was killing in this game.
Step back threes and a bunch of stuff.
Blocks top of possible Siachen.
That was what they did in the Mexican state.
I don't think he's there.
He's somewhere else.
Now our number two on the list.
We got UNLV and Northern Iowa.
Do you remember Ali for open ish? This First of all, you're in Iowa, one of my favorite teams in Fordham in history, because you have the names which are awesome.
Ali for a diminish quads.
Oh, halibut, Jordan Angles Theater.
I'll sanding and they could play really play.
They could defend provable shootings, see what we got.
I remember this game very vividly to because I think this is ah Jordan angle series.
He's a big seven foot guy and I think he made 13 pointer all year heading into this game.
And then he hit to within, like, the 1st 8 minutes.
It was 69 to 66.
Ali for open ish.
Get a deep left wing. Three point.
Go ahead. Left wing three.
That put, uh, UNLV.
But I can't find this game, Bob.
He advised him anywhere.
Oh, man, I'm doing a whole week of this.
We want to figure out a way to do this a little bit better.
I can't even find my notes.
Okay, that's okay.
I already told you what I needed to tell you.
Number one on this list and the the only game that I have read it as a four star game in the first round markets the 60 going up against Washington.
There was a lot of MBA talent in this game.
I said Thomas for Washington, Ritchie and Butler from Marquette, Quincy Pondexter.
I had the game winner driving on Jimmy Butler and you leaned in for a banker from the left wing.
But I remember I remember this game because of the shop make.
There was a lot good shot making step back shots.
Just tough contested shots that that Eastern teams were knocking down.
Oh, so, well, yes, I give up, I give up.
I can't find the game.
Where is it? Were you at? Here we go, I found.
But this was, Ah, a Washington team.
They got to the sweet 16.
If you remember Lorenzo Romar teams, for whatever reason, always kind of disappointed during the regular season.
But postseason there are always hot.
Always seem to get to the sweet 16.
Both teams hot from three.
Yeah, I do remember that.
Both you just lights out from from Beyond the Arc.
Don't have the numbers in here in front of me.
What were Isiah Thomas at? A big game s 1.
What's the go ahead? A game winning shot from Quincy Pondexter.
But this had shot.
Yeah, I just have your shot making was tremendous.
80 to 78 Washington +14 Starting.
This was the best game from the opening round.
Uh, and the only one who ever I have sports are so for to get a four star rating.
Not been a harsh with my ratings, but I'm I don't give four star games out.
He's so that just shows how this came. Actually what it was.
I don't know if anyone really knows about this.
This game's kind of been hit it.
When you think about the 2010 tournament, you think about Northern Iowa, you think about Ali for Open Edition.
You know you might remember the shot against UNLV, but nobody I don't know if anybody remembers.
Quincy Pondexter had that shot 1.7.
That was a great game.
That was the first round.
I may need some help us to figure out how we want to do the rest of these videos.
I'm going to do the second round tomorrow, then the Sweet 16 elite eight.
Maybe when once I get to the Sweet succeeded, we ate because those games a little bit more recent, I'll able to remember them a little bit better in this game to watch. Like a month ago.
I forget all the details, but there you go.
That's my video for today.
I'm gonna do another one tomorrow.
I'm gonna do it for the rest of the week Here.
Yeah. First round recap, baby.
If you guys have any suggestions of what you guys want me to do, uh, to make this may be a little bit more easier.
Uh, what first round has been re capped? A major vacuole out, please.
