and welcome back once again to sportscasts.
I am Adam are talking all things n b a.
And we come to you today in the afternoon and the evening, quite frankly, nearly 6 30 at night Wednesday to talk about the Golden State Warriors and Steph Curry's comments in end around the state of the Quote Dynasty.
Right? The core three members that have been there since Day one, as he puts it, Steph Curry, obviously Klay Thompson and Draymond Green being the cornerstones of that franchise, one prior to one with Kevin Durant.
Now, unfortunately for them, obviously, Steph Curry suffers an injury.
Clay Thompson suffers an entry as well as financial injuries, and that really just details their season instantly.
Now the trade that went on between the Brooklyn Nets and the Golden State Warriors, a sign and trade that Kevin Durant had them do ended up with them getting D'Angelo.
Russell about, however, went across the way ultimately and landed with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
So you know you wouldn't expect anything eating less from an end of day players for someone who's one at the highest level, because is, initial quote about this was for us big picture.
We know we're not done, he told Jermaine O.
O Neill on a live chat over on Instagram myself.
Clay Thompson Draymond Green.
We know we're not done the core that's been here since day one.
We're going to do everything that we got in our power.
It's going to look different.
It's going to have a new cast of characters that are going to contribute a high level of D N A.
Just the chemistry that US three have.
We're going to be in good shape coming out of this, no matter how basketball looks.
So you know the interesting part that I will say it was not.
What he is acknowledging there is that it's going to a different group of platters now.
You can look at that from two perspectives.
You can look at it, say it's going to be different players, as in the contribute the contributing background cast or potentially not anything about the idea of Would you restructure some of these contracts to afford some additional cap room to bring in potential free agents or to bring in some mid level guys that can help elevate this roster right now, when you think about it as far as the contracts on the Warriors on this season.
Currently on the books, they had stepped Curry for 40 Clay Thompson at 32 27 a half 1,000,000 for Andrew Wiggins, who they picked up there in that trade with the Timberwolves and then Draymond Green, 18.5.
Then you got the only other riel walkers contract that you have on the books.
Anything of substance.
Stangel amount with Kevin Looney, who confidence and 4.
5 1,000,000 this year and doesn't really get much.
Must pass that 4.
1 over the next two seasons.
The bigger number here for me, even though by 2122 season Steph Curry making 45.
7 million, at which point he will be 34 years old.
You have ah Draymond Green, who will be third only be 32 but is on the books as over it now to make $24 million at 32 25 point E.
At 33 34 years of age, Dream on.
Corinne will be making $27.
5 million that to me that that's the tricky one.
That's the contract that is difficult to figure out about.
How are you going to manage that? Because as of right now, even if you go all that to the 2023 24 season, Clay Thompson will be on the books, then for 43.
2 million and which Raymond, 27 a half you already have 70 million.
Nearly $71 million of your tap will be tied up in those two players alone.
And assuming that Steph Curry, whose contract will run up after the 2122 season, is he gonna be making again over 40 million? Possibly.
Will he take a little bit more of a team friendly deal, given his age and given the state of the franchise, etcetera, etcetera.
OK, let's say that even goes that red route and maybe signs on for a dream on type, and I'll say the back end of a 25 plus $1,000,000 contract.
You're still gonna get nearly $100 million just in those three players alone.
Now, the other interesting factor that you can think about here is, well, two players that We want to get inside here a little bit.
And that is, of course, going to be the peace that they got back in the trade with the Timberwolves.
And Andrew Wiggins, the ever underperforming player that didn't live up to the hype out of the draft, you know, comes over and it will be interesting.
I want to look at was the splits between Minnesota and Golden State athlete.
42 games for Minnesota, only 12 for Golden State.
The difference is here We take a look at minutes or about the same plane one more minute for Minnesota than he did with the Golden State Warriors in terms of field goal percentage.
So a little bit up tick on the Golden State Warriors, 45 nearly 46% relative to 44 with his previous home three point numbers basically the same.
Move the needle by about a percent, hitting down almost 34 free throw numbers actually went down, hitting only 67% from the line, and his overall numbers in terms of points per game also went down 19.
A couple of factors here, right if they can move on from the contract, that would make a huge difference because you're talking about.
Starting next season, Wiggins will be making 29,000,031 0.
5 the following season and 33.
6 the year after that.
So the idea that he's gonna be on this roster making that type of salary in 2022 23 without having shown significant turnaround in his game seems highly unlikely.
2020 2023 Season again, Doesn't represent Steph Curry Being on the books, they would be a 105 million already.
Throw on at least 25 to 30 million You more for Steph Curry at a minimum, and you're looking at being up over 130 million at that point in the season.
And again, you're also talking about by the end of Clay Thompson's contract, where he's making 43.
He'll be 34 years old by that as well, dream on green.
And when Steph Curry gets re signed, he'll be 34 going to be 35 in that first season of a new contract.
What type of deal? A three year deal.
It takes him to 38 potentially.
And what are the numbers of that look like? I'm not I'm not gonna knock Steph Curry for his comments here, but you have to wonder, organizationally, Really? How are they going to approach solving that problem? And the additional? I thought that was a one additional quote here doesn't look like they're going to get anything else from him there.
Actually, So you know, just when you think about overall in the last thing that we'll talk about here is let's dive inside the premise of the Western Conference, right? Where do we currently stand? Just in terms of the N B. A.
Overall, what are the expectations for some of these teams out west? And then even when you look over in the Eastern Conference as well out West was a couple of variables here, right? Right now, the number one team, they're talking about the l A Lakers.
You have LeBron James at an advanced age, but you also have a young player, obviously an a d.
Arguably one of the top five talents top three talents in the n.
Today, assuming that a d Ri signs and re ups with L. A.
At least in the short term, the next couple of years.
That's going to be a formidable matchup there that you're gonna have to deal with.
And, you know, whatever happens with the return of the season, if that happens, that they're still gonna make little tweaks to that roster to continue to get better.
And by the way, you know on its face as it stands right now, you're still talking about a team that behind Anthony Davis and LeBron James.
You have Koosman there.
You obviously have Coldwell Pope.
You know there's still value there.
They got some veterans like a dance.
Danny Green, Dwight Howard Rate original Rondo.
These air guys, you'll move on from JaVale.
McGee is going to be, eventually a player that you'll you'll part ways with at the end of the day and rotate in some new cast of characters.
They also have in an instant coupon on there as well in Khost, US down the roster, just in case anyone's wondering about where do you honest his brothers go? Ah, but you know, that's a team that's at least going to be in your path for the next couple of seasons.
Beyond that, you go ahead and also think about a couple of a couple of other teams out west there.
Let's take a look and talk about the L.
You know they're gonna be there in the short term over the next two or three year window with Kawhi Leonard with Paul George.
Okay, so it's two teams that potentially be in your way.
You want to talk about, Ah, the Houston Rockets.
Where do they stand while you don't know for sure, you can see it.
Sometimes they've been Underachievers.
But if they're going to have Harden and Westbrook there, they're at least going to be an adversary.
And I make the case that all things being equal, Golden State Warriors should be able to get past them with these aging stores in their core.
But let's talk about the Denver Nuggets.
The Denver Nuggets are a team that right now is boasting players like Joke.
It's You have Jamal Murray, you know? Will Martin.
You have Paul Millsap veteran on the certainly on the back end of his career. Possibly.
But these are teams that are primarily in terms of their stars a little bit younger and surging, trying to get better over the course of these next couple of years as well.
And then the other big one, too.
Obviously a team that currently sits there when you look at the Western Conference and it's fairly low down in that seventh seed, you want to talk about a team that is only going to get better over the next handful of years that, you know Mark Cuban will be dedicated to bringing in additional talents around Lucca.
Don Church with you already have Poor Zynga's there.
You can say what you want.
Us Steph Curry. You have.
You have? Ah yeah, the other curry sector.
Excuse me, Steph Curry's brother, who's on that roster right now to go along with Powell to go along with Tim Hardaway Jr to some of the other names.
Blow, blow your socks off now.
But as it stands right now, you're still talking about a team that boast.
I mean talkto bottom.
You're talking about a team that has four players in double digits all the way down to Seth Curry.
They have some defensive presence as well and, honestly, Blue Gadahn Church is quickly becoming chastity.
Has to be what, Top seven in the league right now.
If you want to go, we want you, say LeBron and A.
D and some of these other K d and the other names that you're used to throwing out their top six, not five. Me.
I don't know where he is currently, but I'll tell you where he's going to be in the next couple of seasons, and that's going to be in the top five all, all total in the n B A.
So you know things can happen year to year.
We know that the N B A can be a little bit rotational in terms of some of those others that are listed in there.
But again, that's what That's what you're looking at right now.
And, oh, by the way, let me throw out.
Let me throw the pelicans as well, just to put a wrinkle in their about a young team with a lot of developing talent.
Zion Williamson that we haven't got a chance to see all that he can do, and he's already blown the doors off of people in the very small sample size that he gave this season.
You know, if you're the Golden State worries if you are Ah, Steph Curry.
I understand the mentality, but I don't know, short of massive restructure of contracts and bringing in another additional star potentially in this upcoming off season, I think that you're obviously be competitive and you'll obviously begin beating at a very high level.
But what the MBA had what has happened is the MBA has changed with you guys as you started the have that combination of perimeter shooting, right? Shoot the lights out.
Be the splash, Broz.
The league has made some adjustments to that.
So you're not necessarily out ahead of the pack, the way you once work.
And on top of which two to flip over the eastern side of things member.
This isn't just what team is LeBron on, and how do we get through them? The Milwaukee Bucks have been coming for a couple of years now.
They certainly even more dominant this season.
Okay, the other heads of retool some things where they're gonna land.
But, you know, Boston Celtics.
They've been a team on the cusp of something.
We'll see what happens with Gordon Hayward there not nearly as many threats.
And that old, by the way, I will throw it out.
The Brooklyn Nets, who happen to be my team.
They're going to be there in some form or fashion between Kevin Durant and Kyrie.
Irving will throw in DeAndre Jordan, and we'll see what happens with Caris.
Levert, Spencer Dinwiddie, Joe Harris on the perimeter.
So there's gonna be a lot of walls that the Golden State Warriors potentially could run into. And that's okay.
And you know, Steph Curry doesn't say that it's going to be, and we'll touch on just one last time before we get out the door.
He doesn't say that they're going to be winning championships.
I'll give it to you is for us.
We know we're not done myself, Clay Draymond.
We know we're not done.
The core head has been here since day one.
We're going to everything that we that we got our power.
It's going to look different.
It's going to have a new cast of characters that are going to contribute at a high level, but the d.
Just the chemistry that us three have here.
We're going to be in good shape coming out of this, no matter what basketball looks like.
So, you know, great.
And you could be competitive at a high level.
And I certainly be impressed by the way if that core players could get back in there, One of the final things that we actually will touch on to ultimately tied the bow on this.
And that is, of course, that they have to go all the way down to the 15 and 50 and that Listen, we all know that's a dismissible Ah, stat line there.
But go inside the numbers and just think about one of these players.
That is that big tag on the on the ah, on the roster right now for them.
And that's gonna be Draymond green when you get inside his numbers and just think about age wary Colonel, where he currently stands at.
This is a guy who this season specifically Ah, he came in here.
Specifically this season, right? He was 43 games, 43 games started, played 28 minutes, a little bit less than what he normally has.
Few minutes less than he has over the last month.
Basically his entire career, once he got into that starting roll back in 2014 15 gave you just 18 points.
Now eight points a game.
Excuse me now, obviously playing without Steph Curry playing without Clay Thompson.
So understandable that obviously plays a huge factor.
Eight points a game give you 7.
4 the year previous, not giving you the usual double digit points that he gave you from 2014 15 all the way through 2017 18 seasons from a rebound perspective, Where is he? Landed.
2 this past year, Year prior Missed by the way a handful of games they're only played in 66 had 7.
3 year Prior, 7.
67 point nine the year before that.
So things are trending in the downward direction in that regard as well.
Defensive rebounds, specifically suffering, and that's primarily where he does most of his work.
Free throw numbers doesn't really matter, but around said he's at 76% that that's par for the course from actually higher than his career average.
Two out of the last three seasons done a better job of the line then he has normally three point percentage.
Last two seasons.
9 28% 25% The year prior career.
32% shooter from the outside.
Ah, and has and has done that every single year.
Season's first time.
He shot below 30% from beyond the arc since his rookie year and very limited starting but 79 games played that season, averaging 13.
Additionally, the field goal percentage, coming into that starting roll back into our sorry came to leave in 2020 12 2013.
Limited but played 32.
7 field goal percentage after that season.
Did not go below 40%.
7 44 49 40 to 45 last season.
44 a half this year, 38.
9 Again, A lot of it could be attributed to the lack of two key members being on the court.
However, I can also make the case that dream on.
Green is one of those candidates for those players that starts to get old fast and as you start to turn over 13 to 31 32.
You can start to see a little bit of diminishment in terms of return on investment.
I'll be interested to see what it looks like, and you can go back and talk about how this season, obviously, we know that Steph Curry came back in here at the back end of it.
So let's take one last little sample size just to confirm or deny on.
Lee played five games.
This will be interesting to see, because this could be this could dispel the notion that I have there just by getting Steph Curry back on the floor.
So when we take a look here and we think about those games that he played, he gave you 27 minutes.
So he played those last five games, 10 24.
I need to see all games here.
So actually played that one game coming back.
So the 1st 4 games of this, yeah, early in the season, not really going to give you a lot of justification there, so it won't bother with that.
I thought he got a couple more games under his belt once he had returned with end of the day is if he's suffering.
If Draymond Green is starting to show diminish in his game rebounding prowess, shot percentages, that's gonna be a huge cog.
I can see Steph Curry and Klay Thompson, and maybe and maybe even keeping Wiggins right and re having a reclamation project for his career and then bring in a different piece when you talk about over $20 million tied up in a player like Draymond Green is he gets to 31 32 33 34 years of age.
I think you are going to start to look at that contract as being a weight that is tying you down, as opposed to Ah, Steph Curry or Klay Thompson if they could be healthy and on the court, Klay Thompson offers you tremendous defensive of presence on that into the floor.
They obviously give you just phenomenal output on the offensive side of the boat, so I get it.
I appreciate it, and I think we have to wait and see what happens that you might take on Steph Curry's comments around it and, by the way, for a group of players that did it again came in with the team started together.
They are the core, Ah, that it helps build up and win these championships.
And that's the mentality you expect for many of the best players in the India.
And I wouldn't be wholeheartedly shock if you saw them in a deep playoff run at least once more coming out of this situation.
But as I highlighted going to be a lot of congestion in the Western Conference, there's going to be competition there that you're gonna have to deal with in a different way than you maybe had to work through in years prior.
