Good morning, everybody.
This is Railroad from DPM Sports talk and welcome to a little bit of in NFL news update this morning.
Seven years ago, the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted a big running back at a Michigan State in the second round of the draft.
That running back, of course, was Lavy on Belen is.
Everybody knows Belle would become a star in his six seasons with Steelers.
Things, of course, ended badly between Bell and Steelers.
Pittsburgh wouldn't commit to Bell long term.
So Levy, on bet on himself, sat out of season and signed with the New York Jets for really less money than the Steelers were offering him.
But he got his long term deal.
I'd like to remind everybody that football is a business, and teams and players have every right to make decisions that they think are best for them or as a player, what's best for themselves.
But Bell, sitting out of season and then the not re signing with Pittsburgh, left the Steelers with a bit of a whole.
James Connor did a solid job, but he wasn't Lavy on Bell.
I guess it's also fair that we should mention that the Steelers traded away Antonio Brown and then in 2019 Ben Roethlisberger missed most of the season with an injury.
The Steelers had the killer bees with Ben Bell and Brown, and by the time the 19 season night 2019 season rolled around, they had no bees at all.
So heading into the 2020 season, the Steelers will have Ben Roethlisberger back in.
According 2 11 year NFL veteran Reggie Bush, Pittsburgh may not only have found the next star running back on their hands, but one that could be even better than Leiby on Bell himself.
In the recent NFL draft, the Steelers drafted under sized star Anthony McFarland with their fourth round pick.
Bush, who is one of the best college running backs of all time, is high on the five foot 8 200 in pound, £208 rookie saying Quote.
The kid can flat out fly.
Reggie, Bush said of the new Steelers rookie quote.
He is a game breaking type of player.
If Bush is correct, and McFarlane can just replicate some of what Bell was able to do in Pittsburgh, then it makes the A F C.
Very interesting this season.
No, of course, we're gonna have to wait.
And still, the season starts to really feel and figure out how every team is and what they're going to be.
But I know that a lot of people have their eye on the A F C South.
But I think the A F C North is shaping up to be the best division, not just in the A F C.
With the best division in the NFL.
Right now, you have the defending conference winners, the Baltimore Ravens and that explosive offense led by Lamar Jackson.
You have Pittsburgh with the relentless defense, the return of Rothes Burger, maybe the reincarnation of Levy on Bell.
The Cleveland Browns have the best offense on paper on offense.
It includes Baker, Mayfield, Odell Beckham, Jr.
Jarvis, Landry, Nick Chubb, Austin Hooper.
If Kevin Stefanski can bring those personalities together, if he can make them work as a unit, the Cleveland Browns are a legitimate Super Bowl contender this year.
And then, of course, you have the Cincinnati Bengals, who just drafted Joe Borough with the first overall pick.
Ladies and gentlemen, the A F C North is going to be a fun division to watch this season.
And according to Reggie Bush, the Steelers have made the right moves to keep themselves right in the mix.
Now, while McFarland doesn't have the size that Belle has coming into the NFL, there's no doubt that the former Maryland star was one of the most explosive players in college football last year.
As a redshirt freshman in 2018 McFarland carried the ball 131 times for 1000 and 34 yards, an incredible 7.
8 yards per carry, and even tacked on an additional seven touchdowns.
And while McFarland didn't put up the same kind of numbers in 2019 and injuries have hindered his ability in the last few years, the Maryland running back is a powerful runner, especially for his size.
The fourth round pick will join the Steelers backfield that includes last year starter James Connor, second year back Benny Snell in 2018 5th round pick Jaylen Samuels.
Here's the thing about McFarland.
Even though Reggie Bush is making a pretty big claim, the Steelers running back Corp is good enough that the rookie won't have to carry the brunt of the load and Mike Tomlin can spread out the workload.
That being said, with Bush claiming that McFarlane is better than Bell, that may raise Steeler fans expectations just a little bit.
And imagine the pressure that that could put on a kid to try and live up to the expectations of possibly being better than one of the league's best running backs.
But last season, the Steelers ranked just 29th in the NFL in both rushing yards per game and rushing touchdowns.
With the team struggles running the ball last year, Anthony McFarlane may have the opportunity to showcase his explosiveness very early on.
