was going on, Guys, it's your boy Ray.
Welcome to DP and Sports Talk on this Tuesday evening, April 14 2000 and 20 day.
I've lost count of quarantine.
I hope that everybody is doing well on today.
Today's lineup action packed, ready to talk from our very own Joe here, a DP and why the Patriots trade up for Justin Herbert in the 2020 NFL draft.
There's a rumor going around that the Packers and the Chargers are interested in.
Jalen Hurts the McCord.
The Twins are predicting that Chris Hogan will return to the Patriots.
Former Ohio State coach Urban Meyers gave his take on why his former quarterback, Dwayne Haskins, struggled his first year in the NFL.
That I'm gonna finish off with.
Bill Belichick uses Mac Castles as an example of how the Patriots will adjust to life without Tom Brady.
I hope that everybody is doing well.
I hope that you're all ready to go.
I hope that we're all ready to rock and roll as we talk football here on D p n sports talk, and I'm gonna start right now with a DP an original from our boy Joe.
Why the Patriots should trade up for Justin Herbert in the 2020 NFL draft again, why the Patriots should trade up for Justin Herbert in the 2020 NFL draft.
Tom Brady is now nothing more than a memory in New England, and he's now enjoying the sunshine in Tampa Bay.
And the Patriots have a quarterback room consisting of career backup Brian Hoyer in the Patriots 2019 4th round selection.
Jared Stadium, Of course, as we all know that Cincinnati Bengals air dangling Andy Dalton and all the while free agents like Cam Newton and Jamis Winston swim in search of life preservers.
Bill Belichick also has tthe e NFL draft coming up Joe Borough from L s U in to attack, a viola from Alabama Jordan Love from Utah State.
Jacob Eastern from Washington, The organ all expected to go in the first round at some point, while quarterbacks like Jalen heard from Oklahoma, Tyler Huntley from Utah, James Morgan from F I.
U Jacob from from George are all expected to go in the middle rounds.
And then you have guys that Cole McDonald from Hawaii in Josh Love from San Jose State, and they're expected to come off the board in the much later rounds.
They're not seen as the top of the draft class now.
Matthew Schmidt of Clutch Sports Board Clips Sports story.
Well, he wrote an article really setting fire to the draft Herbert bandwagon, and he called the wife of the pages trade up the land.
Justin Herbert the 2020 NFL draft.
Matthew Smith put it like this from clutch points, says Quote.
According to Peter King of NBC Sports, the Patriots are enamored with the University of Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert in this year's NFL draft.
King notes of the Patriots have 12 picks in the draft.
Overall, only one of those pics come in the top 85.
So New England would almost surely have to part with future picks to move up for Herbert.
Quote head Justin Herbert, like Eason were on my board entering the 2019 season is having potential to be talked to quarterbacks in the draft.
Neither had this season that I think we all expected, and I think it's I think it's very possible that Herbert could fall to 23 now.
Belle check has not been known to trade up in the first round, and it's just never been a part of the Patriots way, and it's doubtful that it's actually going to start now.
Detroit, Carolina, Cleveland, Las Vegas and Tampa Bay all may be willing to trade down, but Bala check would have to mortgage the Patriots future to get a Lamborghini Vienot of quarterbacks.
There's no guarantee the quarterback won't break down when you drive it off the lot.
And like a used car, quarterbacks are sold as is, although it could be fun to drive a cool car and call the owner, it could be an expensive toy that you don't get a return for your investment.
And that could be true for the Patriots if they traded up to get Justin.
Herbert Billa's, we all know, is Thrifty's.
So the price has to be right for him to pull the trigger.
And a package that includes two first round picks could be a little bit steep for our beloved Bill Belichick.
In 2019 Herbert completed 66.
8% of his passes.
He also got 303,471 yards through for 32 touchdowns and only six interceptions.
and he was finished with 1 53.
1 q b r In 43 games, Herbert had a completion percentage of 64% for 10,000 yards, 95 touchdowns, 23 interceptions of 5 31 51 53.
1 Q b R Herbert's not a scrambler, but he still was able to total 530 yards and 13 touchdowns and 231 carries.
His big, talented full field scanner able to find the right Reed and sling it around the yard from the pocket or on the move.
Herbert Rush throws in 2018 but he showed marked improvement in that area.
Excluding the Auburn opener.
He trusts his protection while working through coverages and wrote development.
It has big boy arm talent and drive velocity, distress and impress defense's.
He's confident attacking downfield.
But touch throws evade him and may have created tentativeness with a certain short intermediate throws.
A ball placement requires additional emphasis, but upgrading to NFL skill talent could help him bloom.
Herbert has a high ceiling and is the most physically gifted quarterback in the draft, but he doesn't have as many wow plays as expected, for someone with his traits, experience and potential person went, and that comes from lands.
Erlin, now crabs from TVN, says that Justin Herbert has all the physical tools to become a franchise quarterback in the NFL, particularly for a vertical passing offense.
Her presents as a player with consistency, issues on timing, throws and trouble, some lapses under pressure.
Ball security is another issue, so Herbert will need to be aided by a high level interior offensive line play to protect him from consistent distress.
If everything clicks, he's a top tier talent, but the wrong situation could be unclear.
I want to keep going here because we got athlete in sports.
Who says Herbert gets fidgety with his mechanics when the pocket gets muddy and his accuracy and decision making suffer? As a result, he has to become more efficient and more confident.
Working through his reads, especially against NFL defense, is that will challenge him or in the pre snap peas.
He also needs to put the driver roll with a better touch and finally read from the draft.
Network says Herbert has already been banged up quite a bit throughout his career, protecting him at all costs will be vital.
Otherwise his body could begin to break down at a very early age.
If all things fall in Herbert's favor, he could quickly turn into a potential for franchise quarterback.
If not, he could be searching for another team during his second contract and looking to relight the flame that once made him an intriguing prospect.
And you know, for me, Justin Herbert reminds me a little bit of Ben Roethlisberger.
He has the place style that both helped in hindered the Steelers organization.
The Patriots have had some of their best and worst games against Big Ben.
The other thing that reminds me of Big Ben is his injuries.
We have seen Glass quarterbacks like Sam Bradford be on the shelf and out of the league soon after entering, and Herbert comes with that kind of risk.
So the Patriots want to take a risk on a guy who could be a top five quarterback one year.
Well, he's also gonna be as fragile as a dozen eggs.
Herbert is an interesting risk reward prospect, and that's what makes his value very questionable.
So I don't know what you guys are thinking.
I hope that you all are keeping track on who's coming up in the NFL draft.
As I said later this week, probably on Thursday, I will be hosting a live mock draft on the sports show.
I hope that you guys were able to check it out.
Thank you, everybody.
Who's to the end of the show? Nate, I got the Cowgirl Summers.
What's going on, guys? Thank you, everybody, for coming in.
Always, always, always appreciate you guys.
Now I'm gonna move away from the Patriots a little bit.
I want to talk about a rumor that's going around that the Green Bay Packers and the L A Chargers are both actually interested in Jalen Hurts.
This comes from clutch points.
Now one of the more intriguing quarterback prospects heading into the 2020 NFL draft is jail and hurts.
And, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Green Bay Packers and the Los Angeles Chargers have both shown interest in him.
Rob report says quote too interesting.
Teams have also been in touch and monitoring. O. U.
The Packers and the Chargers both had meetings set up with him to have done virtual calls.
Both have, ah, veteran who of varying ages and as a starter and are expected to look for the future end. Quote.
Jalen Hurts is probably a really good pick for a team like the Green Bay Packers.
I think over the I think, over the Chargers.
The Packers still have Rogers for what, like five more years.
I don't know that the Chargers a caring what? Tyrod Taylor is the quarterback.
But I think what you're the Chargers need to be looking for an upgrade over Taylor.
They have time to sit.
Jalen Hurts could be the next starter.
And they could very much due to Roger's like they did the far four Rogers and when they're ready to move on to jail and they could just move on from Roger's.
So there's a lot of potential of what the Packers could do.
I don't think it's a bad move by either team to look at them, but I really see Jalen Hurts is a better fit for the Packers now, as rapid poor points out or soy the Packers, our story as Rappaport, both out there points out.
Both have veteran quarterbacks, but their outlook with that quarterback is a little bit different.
The Chargers have Tyrod Taylor, but he wasn't even the starter last year for them, and they really don't have much connected to him.
If the charges did decide to not go with a quarterback and with their sixth overall pick, it would make a lot of sense to use their second round pick on Jalen hurts if he's still available now, before we go any further, I believe that Jail Inherit will still be available.
I think that you'll be able to pick up Jalen Hurts in the third round of the draft.
Um, I think that he is a better quarterback than I think some people want to give him credit for.
But I still those when I look at the quarterbacks were laughed and really like I discussed in the first story when we're looking at things like you know from an East sin and love, obviously too, and Burrow will probably go in the top five.
I really and even Justin Herbert in that sort of bottom.
That sort of second tier of quarterback Jalen Hurts kind of sits in that third tier, maybe him and from sitting that third tier together, and I think that he could still be available in the third round.
Now the Packers are in a different spot with their starting quarterback, with Aaron Rodgers still expressing a desire to play for many more years.
We all remember, Roger said he wants to play through these 40 years old Rogers, 36 years old, which puts the Packers in an interesting position.
The Packers have also not been afraid to push a player out to bring in a younger guy.
The team forced out Brett Far to replace him with Rogers.
Could we be behind Rogers for a couple of seasons and then push him to retire or a different team? If they draft hurts, it would at least enter the would at least enter the discussion.
I mean, let's face it like we saw Brad Far play for somebody else.
Tom Brady's playing for somebody else.
Joe Montana played for somebody else.
At the end of the day, it seems like sometimes great quarterbacks would just play for other people, and I've heard people make the argument.
Like while Drew Brees still plays for the Saints.
But Drew Brees was Ah, San Diego Charger before he was a saint.
So it's it's not the same.
So he's already playing for a second team.
And I mean, I think that, I guess, said, I think Jalen Hurts is the perfect pick for the Packers.
I wouldn't necessarily pick him up in the second round.
I think you can risk it and try to pick him up in the third.
If you don't get him, you don't get him, you move on and you look for Rodgers replacement another year.
I don't think that the Packers should be in a rush to replace Aaron Rodgers.
I think they got to make sure they're bringing with the right person.
But break I'm an opportunity to sit behind Rogers.
Really getting evaluation after a couple of camps a couple of years is ah, you know, a backup that would give the Packers a really good idea of exactly who he is, What we do know about her.
Hertz is a dual threat quarterback that seems like a true wild card.
Some believe that he can be a full time starting the NFL while others believe he is more of a gadget player who won't ever become a full time player.
I don't know if it's fair to say that I would compare him toe like a Lamar Jackson because I remember Lamar Jackson getting the same sort of heat in the same sort of bad coverage back when he was Ah, you know, back when he was going for things.
As most people know, I am a New England Patriots fan and I was really I was almost distraught.
I was drunk, too.
That's probably why I was distraught.
But I was upset that the Patriots decided not to draft Lamar Jackson.
And it really bothered me when he drafted with the Baltimore Ravens.
And I mean, Jalen Hurts could possibly fall into that same subject.
I'm not as high on Jalen hurts as I was on Lamar Jackson.
Lamar Jackson is a first round draft pick.
I just finished saying that I could see Jalen hurts fall into the third round so you can't compare the two guys, you know, and it's not me trying to disrespect anybody.
I'm not trying to disrespect Jalen hurts and I'm not trying to disrespect Lamar Jackson by comparison.
That, too, but I just see their Their path to the draft is a very similar sort of routes where people don't really know what they could be.
And Jalen Hurts could really turn out to be, you know, the next version of Lamar Jackson.
Or he could turn out just to be whoever.
So I don't know it's gonna be worth keeping an eye on.
Like I said, I think he's a much better fit for the Green Bay Packers and the Chargers.
And the charges were having expect, um, if you're bringing him in to compete with Tyrod Taylor, that's That's not something that you can just, you know, you're bringing in jail and her to start.
If he's here to compete with tired, it's not sin behind Tyrod toe learn.
So I don't know.
That's just where I am with that and ah yeah, that's it.
Thank you guys for coming in Bath Carolina fam Bobby LF Drea Patriots What's going on? Bubble boy? Thank you for coming in.
Jessica can fly.
Thank you all You all for coming and really appreciate You guys coming out.
Show me some love checking out the show.
Always, always, always appreciate it.
We had to talk some football here to talk about the Patriots.
Nate still with us right now. Appreciate that.
Summers left Chris What happened? And ah, Bath.
Thank you for coming in as well as John.
So all y'all, Really? Ah, all y'all are really appreciate it.
I always appreciate when you guys come in and check me out and, uh, and go.
So look, my next story that I want to talk about, but it's the McCord Twins predict that Chris Hogan will return to the Patriots Now.
Chris Hogan, who spent three years in New England and went to three Super Bowls, could come back to the Patriots, according to them.
As we all know, New England has lost quite a few pieces to their team and free agency.
But a familiar face could help them out.
He's 7 11 He's always open.
He's Chris Hogan.
Look, I have mixed feelings about Chris Hogan.
I think that Hogan was a very formidable player for the New England Patriots.
I think that I think that he was not set up in the right position of 2018.
Hogan is the perfect third or fourth receiver when you look at 2018 which was his worst season with the Patriots.
Julian Edelman misses the 1st 4 games of the year.
You know Josh Gordon comes in, he goes out.
I mean, they got one point, like Chris Hogan and Phillip Dorsett.
We're the only two like real starting quarterbacks.
They had back in 2018 still won a Super Bowl with them.
But I think that he was the only I think that he was the only only guy there, so I mean, it would be really, really cool.
I think to me if he were to come in and be able to play in the spot, But when I look at guys like you know okay, so Julian Edelman's gonna be number one and then we have sort of you'll sort of have that same bunch of Mohammed's noona kill Harry Jacoby Meyers of Chris Hogan, and they'd all be fighting out for the 2345 spot.
I guess you could throw Gun Rochelle ski in there as well, so the Patriots are gonna have to get a big name receiver at least out of the draft in order for to make sense for Chris Holding to come back.
But I also get one.
McCord is saying that we'll get to his words in a minute, But when you've got a new quarterback coming in, then it makes sense that it makes sense that you want him to come in and, um, help a young quarterback or helping new quarterback, even veteran adapt to the Patriots system.
Hogan obviously knows the system.
You'd have Edelman, who knows the system.
You have two guys because you still got Jacoby.
Meyers is still learning to kill Harry, who's still learning.
You know Mohammed Sunu, who didn't have the greatest season with the Patriots? I still think he could believe.
I still believe he could be traded at the trade deadline, so there's a lot of things that go in now.
Hogan joined the Patriots in 2016 after finally making a name for himself in Buffalo the previous three years.
In his first season with New England, he led the league in yards per reception and they won Super Bowl 51 with the team.
He also went to Super Bowl 52 53 following the 2017 and 28 campaigns, winning the later after losing the former Hogan had his best year statistically in New England before signing a one year contract in Carolina.
New England undoubtedly benefited from Hogan's productivity and appeared in the Super Bowl every year.
He was on the team, and Hogan certainly played better in Fox, bro.
So reunion makes sense, right? Well, the McCord twins certainly think so on their show double coverage.
Devon claimed he was talking with Hogan recently.
And here's what the longtime Patriots say.
If he had to say, quote, you heard it here.
First man Chris Hogan back to New England.
We get him back there.
We got 7 11 Always open.
We've got a new quarterback.
Let's bring in an old target.
That's what we do in New England.
LeGarrette came back.
Next thing you know, 18 touchdowns.
That's what happens in New England.
Deon Branch came back in 2010 touchdowns everywhere, so New England gets a head start.
Start your articles now it's 8 47 Devon has said it. End quote.
I mean, we could have all the opinions we want and I got actually have my own opinions.
As I always say, I'm just a fan.
I always have to respect what a guy like Devin McCourty says.
There's no reason for him to bring up Chris Hogan's name if he doesn't believe in, there's no reason to give him that endor*****t unless he believes he could come in and do things, you know.
And that's one of my big things, and it's the same with, like Jared Stadium.
There's no reason right now, especially after they re signed Brian Hoyer for the Patriots players to throw their support behind Stadium.
They should probably actually sit this one out because Hoyer signed a contract thinking that he had the opportunity to compete for a job.
But the fact that the players were all throwing their support behind him says that that's who they want.
No, Devon makes a compelling point.
Hogan's best success has come in New England, and the Patriots best success of late has come in.
Hogan is on the team.
New England of a new quarterback this year, whether it's Jared Stadium, ASM, the Kill Harry and Jacoby Meyers are both going into their second year at in versatility of the versus L. Hogan.
Who knows? Theo offense, who doesn't have much toe wear and tear on him, would be very beneficial to stitch him lawyer or anyone else trying to get acquainted with the Patriots offense.
New England right now has slightly over a $1,000,000 cap space remaining, and Hogan could be a pretty cheap option.
You play the 2019 season on a contract with a cap, it under 1.
5 million balance that could make sure Hogan fit under the cap.
And I think he would want I think he would want as well.
Like McCord, he said he likes to bring back former Patriots of the team such as Liguera Blunt, Deon Branch, Jamie Collins, Brian Hoyer, Patrick Chung's and Brandon Boldin, just to name a few.
Hogan earned his nickname 7 11 while he was in Miami and appeared on HBO's hard knock.
Hogan still has some 7 11 left in him, and perhaps he can bring it his way.
Always open mentality to New England once, and I I struggle, man.
I struggle with it because I have to lean in the direction of what Devin McCourty says, Not because I'm a big Chris Hogan fan.
Chris Hogan had an awful 2018 season. Awful.
But But why would McCord you bring up Hogan unless he wants him back? And that's a thing.
Unless unless McCord he wants a tank.
And I doubt that because he's got, like, maybe two or three years of football left, I think he believes that they're gonna win a Super Bowl.
Bringing in Chris Hogan is the way.
Or maybe he's just looking for clicks, you know, he's got his podcast.
I got my cast here.
It's not a podcast is a show, but I got my show.
It's all about the clicks.
We know it. I need the views.
I need the people coming on.
Maybe he started out there for the clicks.
I don't know, but I think regardless of our feelings, his fans man, when when a player like McCord E.
Who's a veteran captain, says something of this nature, I think we have to listen to him.
The big name draft picks.
I can come in and fix things off, especially the linebacker position.
I don't I will be doing a mock draft this week.
Don't be surprised if I think a linebacker in the first round and not a quarterback.
I think we need to address the offensive line.
We need to address the edge position.
We need to address safety, probably look at another corner.
We don't know how long Jason McCord is gonna be with us.
It's a whole lot of things. I need to be addressed.
The defensive line, I mean, basically almost every position in wide receiver tight end.
I can't forget about those probably to the most important offensive positions.
I mean, the only position that probably doesn't have to be.
We need a kicker.
We don't have a kicker, so I agree, man.
And unfortunately, I think just with the with the things that we're not gonna get any big name free agents, but over get some big free, free air, some big draft picks, I guess Chris says.
We don't need big names is up to their jobs.
He's not competing.
He's like another coach up what he thinks is competing, though he thinks he's competing.
Oh, Bobby just shrugs his shoulders.
I love a Bobby States so neutral.
It's just like whatever man it is what it is.
Bill's gonna do what he's gonna do.
I'm gonna smoke weed and I'm gonna enjoy watching Patriot football and may thank you for getting a comment.
You never make comments.
I appreciate you appreciate you coming in and joining the conversation, joining more often.
All right, guys, I got another NFL story coming up for you guys here.
Gonna talk about my man Urban Meyers.
Urban Meyer's reacts to Dwayne Haskins struggles in his rookie season.
Former Ohio State Buckeyes champion head coach Urban Meyers has a few thoughts on his college quarterback, Dwayne Haskins, now with the Washington Redskins.
Now let me say something to you guys.
A lot of you know that some of you may not.
Oh, Stu is my team.
I will cheer for the Ohio State University.
There was never a time, never a place, never a moment that I believe Dwayne Haskins was gonna be a really successful while a real successful quarterback in the NFL, and I don't want to knock the kid.
He's an OS you guy.
I love always you guys, but I think that there was big expectations that shouldn't have been there.
I'm in my old man and I my old man's in the West.
You guys, too? That's why I'm gonna waste you. Fan.
We both said it.
We didn't know if he had the skill set the transition into the NFL.
Now I hope the best for him. I do.
I hope the best for every Ohio State guy.
Zeke, I like that.
You know Eddie, George Riley.
But you guys got him.
Say, you know, the bow says, I'm always looking out.
I hope that Chase Young just tears it up in the league this year.
You know, I'm a big, big, big in my draft.
I'm telling you, we're gonna draft somebody from Ohio State University.
And I know that Ohio State University is not a popular college for Bill Belichick.
It's not Alabama. It's not Rutgers.
If I have my way, we're bringing in a Buckeye.
So I wanted to make that clear.
I don't want people thinking I'm just hate, not Haskins.
The rise of Soft more did not have a stellar rookers rookie season with the Redskins, who selected him in the first round of 2019 NFL draft, but Meyer still thinks that Haskins will turn out to be a fine signal caller.
Here's what he said, he said.
My concern about Dwayne wasn't so much maturity, but it was his lack of experience, Myers said while talking to F S one.
Speak for yourself.
He had the best quarterback year in the history of Ohio State, one of the best years in the history of college football.
For a quarterback, however, it was one year that think he's ready to lead a franchise immediately.
You know, the NFL is such a different game.
It's such a fast game.
Everybody's an All star, Mayer said.
My concerns were only the lack of experience.
I think is gonna be fine if they stick with him.
What's the common denominator? Urban asked rhetorically.
It's will the surround him with good players.
End quote and I agree with Urban.
I mean, Washington's never been a team to surround their quarterbacks with people who they need and deserve.
Look, I'm a big proponent of the Washington Redskins signing Cam Newton.
Cam Newton's a former MVP, brought a team to a Super Bowl.
He may not be the guy he was back in 2015 when he won that M v P.
But he's a former M V P, so he understands what it takes to be an EVP.
He understands what it takes.
The lead in NFL team.
Let Haskin sit behind him for a year to get to know the team, get to know what they're doing and then try to give the kid a shot.
I like Ron Rivera.
I think that Ron Rivera could mentor him as a coach.
I think that Haskins is being set up.
So what I would love to do is see, Then bring in Cam Newton.
Give the kid a shot to really, really, really learn how to play football in the NFL.
It's just me, right? Haskin could be in troubles if the rumors about the Redskins ah, wavering on Buckeye edge rusher Chase Young in favor of Alabama quarterback to attack go Viola with the number two pick.
One year after the Arizona Cardinals selected Oklahoma Heisman Trophy winner Cuyler Murray abruptly trading their former first round quarterback selection, Josh Rose into the Miami Dolphins.
Listen, you need a quarterback, I'm gonna finish this light, but you need a quarterback to lead your team.
You need a quarterback to have his successful franchise.
You need a quarterback to win championship games.
You do not under any cir***stances give up on Chase Young.
You build your defense around Chase Young, you can find another quarterback.
You won't necessarily find another Chase Young.
You've got a young kid and Dwayne Haskins who could be something you bring in Cam Newton.
You let a mentor Haskins their games are pretty similar, and you move on.
Am I saying that? Because Chase Young's and Ohio guy probably.
But look at the impact that Nick boasts a hat on the San Francisco 40 Niners last year.
I guarantee it, man, but I guarantee San Francisco doesn't go to the Super Bowl if it's not for Bosa.
Hey, look, there's other good players on San Francisco.
The team collectively got there.
Nick Bos have pushed him over the edge, though.
I'm just saying the Dolphins are still in need of a quarterback and appear likely Thio Ah, likely destination for Tango Viola, the Redskins.
However, Haskins did not have much work with work with on offense and the Redskins, even if they do take a young in the second over with second overall pick.
They have to pick up the pieces and surround their second year gun slinger with better talent.
As Urban Meyer's suggests in his recent remarks about his Ohio State signal caller, I agree, it's it's that that's what they got to do.
It's they have to give them weapons.
They have to give him somebody you want to talk about, mate.
You want to talk about a team that needs big names.
It's the Washington Redskins, man.
If any team is gonna need a big name, it's the Washington Redskins, and I think that big mean for them should be.
It needs to be Cam Newton.
Thank you to everybody who's tuning and having fun checking it out.
Appreciate you guys always appreciate everything comes in here.
I got one story left for you before we call it a day, and I have fond memories.
