the following takes place between Wait, wait.
Good morning, everybody.
And welcome to F P C rate be alive. It is Wednesday.
It is April the 1st 2020 That's right.
We were in a brand new month.
And folks, if you hit me with an April Fool's jokes, you get blocked, fired or just completely cut out of my love life.
I cannot stand them.
I do not want to do with them.
Don't come at me with them, especially when they're sports related.
I'm not in the mood today to deal with any sort of outrageous talk.
So you know what? We're gonna keep it simple here.
We're gonna We're gonna stay on track.
We're not gonna have any jokes.
We're not gonna have any tricks for you folks.
We're just gonna bring in, put together a nice show for you, and hopefully we can do that.
So in order to do that, I have to bring in some people to hold me up because I can't do this by vice itself.
So first off, we're gathering in.
He's becoming a regular here these last couple weeks.
You know him as the company man.
He is Mr Kyle center there.
Kyle, how are we doing today? I feel really good.
Glad drawing you both.
Once again, I love being on the show.
So, uh, hopefully have a good episode today.
Well, technique technically, Might.
Can't join the show until I say Hey, Mark, how we doing today? No, no, 00 s o.
So I guess I shouldn't tell you that the latest is that Tom Brady's coming back to New England.
I guess I shouldn't tell you that.
Then if your ah really upset about some of these April Fool's joke, I just never wanted to.
Vincent a command.
Clip more than I do right now.
I'm not I'm not having it, Mike, I'm not having it.
I almost fell for Torey Krug signing a two year contract extension.
Okay, I'm not I'm not about to have it today, all right? That's not in this sign happening.
In all kidding aside, folks, I think we all speak for each other.
We say, Yeah, I think the whole year of 2020 has been one large April Fool's joke.
So I think we've had enough of them and we'll try to just power through it as much as possible today.
But, uh, Kyle, always a pleasure to share the microphone with you and Ian most of time. It's a pleasure ship.
All right, Right, right.
Yeah, Well, no, I I understand.
I mean, if you have Ah, if you have a headache and, you know, like listening to someone talk over, over and over again, you probably don't enjoy it as much.
But, um, it doesn't matter. I do.
Um, I like talking, so I'm gonna keep doing it.
Hey, we actually have some stuff to talk about today.
Um, not not just, you know, random.
I mean, there's just a lot of just random stuff.
Don't Don't Don't get me wrong.
I mean, we're on aired.
We tend to talk of a random things a lot, but ah, the passing up of the expanded playoffs in the NFL came about yesterday, and, um, we all know the rules.
Seven teams now from each conference get into the playoffs with Onley one team receiving a bye.
So we now have ah, again A You know, two extra teams entering into the tournament each and every year.
So I guess I'll also to Kyle first? No.
Do you like it? Are you Are you okay with it? Are you? And do you like the new format? Are you kind of Ah, maybe seven's a little too much.
I mean, the truth is, we've seen in less these years, but I remember Ah, 34 year stretch where there was a 10 win team missing the playoffs every year.
You know, not to bring up bad memories, but you guys remember pate the time of the Patriots, Mr at 11 and five.
So I think there's more cases of that than there are of teams that air.
That would be the seven that are really you know, all those guys don't deserve to be nothing else.
You know, last year, the one everyone mentioned was, You know, if we did have seven teams last year, the Steelers would have been in the playoffs.
That means you get Mason Rudolph on Delvin.
Hodges is quarterbacks never was kind of speaking against.
That is as an argument against it.
But with six teams in the conference, we've had some horrible quarterback play in the playoffs, and I'm in a game where Connor Cook and Brock Oscar.
They played against each other, and there was the year the Cardinals were hosted by the Panthers Panthers with a losing record.
And then they went in there and they smoke the Cardinal's cause They're down to their third string quarterback.
And there's, like the least yards, a team, a ac***ulated in playoff game in NFL history or something.
So we've had bad quarterback played before, so that doesn't it won't just suddenly start with us with the 17 and I think more often than not, that there are some really good quality teams that are probably deserving to be in those playoff spots.
I just haven't been able to get them.
And, frankly, that Steelers defense last year probably deserved to be in the playoffs.
They unit, once they got Minka Fitzpatrick was was phenomenal, So I'm all for it.
I think it creates for competition for that number one overall seed for that first round by only one team will get a conference now and also more intense playoff matches for the seven spot.
So I'm anything that creates more tension in December for as many times as possible.
Yeah, I I mean, I'm I'm gonna take the Before I let Mike speak here, I'm gonna take the opposite approach.
And I'm of the I'm of the opinion that less is more when it comes to the playoffs.
I mean, the one thing I mean, I love the NHL player.
I think there's nothing better than the Stanley Cup playoffs.
I mean, if I had one.
Gripe is more than half the teams get in, and it's like, Okay, all right, I get it.
But at the same time, hockey is unlike any other sport where the disparity between her, the difference or the skill difference, or what have you between teams one in eight is not that different.
And we've seen all too often that teams eight seed seven seed succeeds.
It doesn't really matter.
You can win in hockey if you're one of those needs.
So I don't think that's necessarily a pies here.
I mean, although again, if if if they were to say, Oh, we're gonna scale back the number of playoff team, I'd be okay with that because I'd understand that like, hey, they already let 16 in as it is so Ah, but that's one generally less is more and we NFL in the same way.
Like I I I did a show.
Er if you guys are on sports Gasser in the SportsCastr regularly dp and ah, sports talk, uh, airs every night.
But I was I did a guest spot yesterday last night and we talked about this and I said, You know, perhaps it's it's I need to see it for myself.
Maybe I need to see it play out to really make a proper opinion on it.
Because right now, my, my, uh I guess my knee jerk reaction Excuse me? I need your reaction is to say, I don't like it.
You know, I just again and I don't like it puts a lot of pressure and again, and this might be a good thing, but it puts a lot of pressure on teams that get that one seed when I when I do think a couple of teams may deserve the buy and it does give a huge advantage to that one seed and really with 16 or now going on 17 games next year, um, it I don't know if there's enough, like in Major League baseball and in Ah, obviously basketball hockey.
There's 82 games, 162 games.
There's a lot of games to two, uh, make a in the standings.
I mean, a football, you can kind of fall behind pretty quickly and never really have that chance, you know? Now, with only one by, I mean, it really puts a little huge advantage and into the pocket of one team and one conference, so I don't know.
I mean, I don't know how I'm gonna like it, but I guess we're gonna have to see how it plays out.
You know, if you saw what happened to the one seed last year, and you know, it didn't really matter.
So in the A f c, at least so I don't know.
What? What do you think I share a lot of your sentiments on, especially on the number one seed, I think.
To me, that's the most eye opening.
It's not so much adding the other game on wild card weekend having another team get in.
I'm or on your side.
And when it comes to that than I am a non Kyle's when it comes to less being Maur Morva traditionalist so I wasn't too crazy about it.
I don't necessarily dislike it again.
Like you, I'm keeping an open mind.
But that extra, but that that extra seed in the playoffs takes away a number one seed.
And let's face it, that can change a lot of the complexities.
If your team's consistently vying for that top tea again, I bring it back to the Patriots.
But they're always in contention this year, maybe an anomaly on that, but they're always in contention for that top spot.
Now all of a sudden, if you want a first round bye, you need to secure that top spot.
I think this is particularly intriguing in the M p F C this year, where you have two of the top teams two teams that are consistently being bandied about now as being conference contenders in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the New Orleans Saints, two quarterbacks over the age of 40.
Now, I think that Drew Brees and Tom Brady are in great physical condition, maybe Brady a little bit more so because of his conditioning regimen.
But to say that either one of those quarterbacks wouldn't benefit from an extra week off is probably an understatement Now how, all of a sudden it's either going to goto one or the other, or maybe not, either, because you still have teams like the Seattle Seahawks, like the San Francisco 40 miners that have something to say about that in terms of who's going to get that number one seat.
So I think it's gonna be very interesting in terms of playoff seeding, how this is gonna work out and which teams are going to be able to emerge because you're going to again.
That is gonna amp up the competition for that number one seed.
And I think it's gonna make for some interesting playoff races down the line.
So from offense point of view, it might be aesthetically pleasing.
But at the same time, it could cause some issues for a team that maybe it's fighting some injuries.
Or maybe on the older side, they're gonna miss that extra week off during playoffs.
And that's kind of this kind of my thing.
I mean, I don't know, like a side.
Obviously, the logistics of it is you're gonna have to have only one game. Have abi.
When you have only 17 in the playoffs.
I mean, the alternative is to move it to eight, and I don't want that.
So I mean, I'm kind of, you know, what are you gonna choose here? That's why I mean for me, I'd rather lean towards the six teams and and all that and, you know, well, well, kind of See, I feel like you know, you you just, you know, like in baseball.
And this was a great point That was far out last night. Not by May.
I wish I could take credit for, but in baseball it's like, you know, they added the extra playoff game, but they cheap into too, you know, because it's a one game playoff and look, I understand what it you know what it is.
It's a it's a cheap pop, really is essentially what it is.
You get a guaranteed quote unquote Game seven.
And look, some of these names are fantastic, so I'm not going to sit here, not the actual games itself.
But in reality, you're talking about one team, potentially, who you know, was either close to winning a division or high speed.
Uh, losing their higher 162 game season on one game, and and really, all it takes is just one fluky, you know, so to me, I don't want to see that happen with the NFL.
I don't want to see some, um, watered down playoff us, because again, we end up getting two or three quarterback matchup for team matchups that are just, you know, not that great.
I mean, again at the same time, you know, this could open up the door, but have, you know, ah, stacked.
You know, I look at the NFC in particular, the undersea.
You can pick seven playoff teams.
Probably that, you know, you could probably make a strong case for that.
Could be in the Super Bowl.
You know, again, we don't know how things are gonna play out over the course of the season, but, um, you know this.
Ah, you know this This will ah separately, add some more intrigue and get more opportunities of the teams.
I just don't know if I'm gonna personally like it.
That's all I'm saying.
I'm a little down in the dumps on it.
Say, let's just put it that way.
And I see your point and I definitely understand I I'm not an advocate of expanding to aid at all.
And I completely agree with you on that when it comes to the the extra team.
Yeah, it could have had some some water down, but like I said, sometimes there, there, there there are teams that have 10 wins.
We know a team very well, but with 11 wins didn't get into the playoffs.
Think I'll mention that as well? So you know we'll keep an open mind, but I'm or on your side on this. I am a traditionalist.
I like the way that the NFL playoffs was constituted.
I guess this adds a little bit more revenue for the owners and something that I know they pushed hard for.
So we'll see what happens.
Well, that that's just that.
I mean, it's more money, and I guess that I get it.
I understand why they're doing understand.
Um, you know, and I understand a lot of it.
I just don't know if I'm gonna like I feel like you're you're kind of forced the issue with Dan in the NFL.
That's you know, like I said, I I could change my mind especially, You know, this is this is scenario.
I sought it out on Twitter, especially if, ah, the Patriots get in as 1/7 seed and somehow when a Super pole and just and just watch the collective minds of everyone just go crazy.
And obviously, um, it would have as much Ah, you know, it'll have us much Ha ha! You know to it because there's no Brady involved.
But ah, at the same time, if this were the case, if the Patriots become the 1st 7th seed in the playoffs and then happened to take him and when I think I might change my tune a little bit, it just just for a pure enjoyment of watching everyone lose their minds.
Then it will be Bella check arrangement syndrome Focus.
You have to change the BDs slightly, and everybody will go into absolute stare ICS when it comes to that.
But yeah, I mean, for us, it would be Yeah, it would be pretty amusing to say the least, but you know, the rest of the rest of the the NFL universe probably not so much Well, in.
And then we're gonna go to the next topic, and then I'm actually going Thio.
We're got short in the show today, folks.
And I'm making this announcement now, because you some of the issues that we have in some of the things we wanted to do today, I want to make sure that we can actually do them with a ah, you know, kind of a working set up here.
And right now we're having some issues with strength team, and it's really not coming in properly.
I can't really fix it.
So, um, we're gonna we're gonna talk one more thing and we're going to save our big fantasy football in 24 topic for tomorrow for for when I can try to fix this, because right now it's just a watchful.
So I apologize for that, folks, and I want to make sure that we're on camera doing that tomorrow.
So we're gonna cut the show a little short today, But before we do, um, I I just wanted Mike.
TB, 12 Still lives, my friend.
So Chris Godwin is going to ah, take 14 the Mohammed Sunu number, and, um, yeah, you know what I mean.
I kind of figured that was gonna happen.
But if I was God, when I would have been like here, take it.
Sure, Go for it. I don't want it.
What's 12 to May I? Yeah, and I know there was a lot of hoopla.
Why shouldn't a lot of people I think everybody pretty much figured that this was going to happen.
But look, I think that, uh, Godwin, definitely offering the number, shows a lot of respect.
Andi, I think that's something that he should be committed for.
I think Brady took it graciously.
You condemn finitely.
See that? Um, it's I mean, Tom Brady, number 12.
They'd be like Peyton Manning going somewhere and wearing anything other than number 18.
It's just it's not.
It's just wouldn't have worked.
I know a lot of people said, Oh, we should go back to 10 or you should wear a different number.
That would be the ultimate new team.
I mean, T V 12 is a brand.
I think everybody understands that led to see Tom retain that number.
He'll still be able to do great things with it in Tampa Bay.
And, you know, it's just to me, that's that's his fit is so good old Chris Godwin for, ah, for being, you know, humble and, uh, reverent enough to the goat.
To be a to surrender that number to him.
And, uh, you know, I think it in a lot of ways.
I think what he's getting eyes there's a lot more than what he's giving up with the amount of touchdowns he's going to catch with the amount of months he's going to a mass.
With Tom Brady thrown from the football this year, I think Chris up and writing on the wall and realize that you know what? I'm gonna hand this over.
I'm going to make sure that my quarterback has isn't number and you know he'll pay back with the amount of, ah yardage in touchdowns that I get on the field.
I think for a fairly even exchange.
Well, a you know someone after you know, when when Brady first signed like, But what should Chris God, when asked for in exchange for 12 of my response was a Super Bowl championship? And like really think that's a fair exchange? If you're gonna talk about perfectly said Yeah, it could have said it better.
But real quick The Ohio I got I gotta ask you, I gotta ask you and Jim asking you both.
I'm asking us all because again, you know, aside from the fact that the playoffs were expended, the NFL has steadfastly believed that their season is not going to be impacted.
Um, that Oh, I guess we lost Kyle e didn't realize we lost Kyle.
That's probably why he's just staring blankly into the screen here.
And, uh and yeah, that's that's that's that's probably why.
So, uh, I'm just asking you real quick because again, we're gonna We're gonna open the show pretty early and just kind of push this out as a podcast and ah, get hopefully get back to normal tomorrow.
But, ah, the NFL's planning for the full season.
I don't think that's gonna happen.
I think they're barely gonna be able to get this draft off.
And then after that, I I feel like it's inevitable that the season is gonna not stop part on time.
But the NFL seems to think that they are.
So you're got What is it tell you? Besides, in addition, indeed, yeah, completely the complete agreement with you.
I don't see them starting non time.
I just don't think they can.
Uh, you know, Look, there's so many logistics that go into the start of an NFL season.
We talked about the draft.
Nice to believe it or not.
I still have some doubt about that as well.
I still think that's not not as concrete as people would like it to leave.
I know we're now in 11th hour year today being April 1st, 23 days away from the draft.
It's, you know, getting down to crunch time.
So if they're saying that they're gonna do it, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.
But I still have a little doubt.
But one thing that I don't have much doubt about is that the CPS and will be pushed back somehow.
I mean, you're talking about elimination of OT eights elimination of mini camp.
Those are important parts of teams building together.
I know that that sounds a little disingenuous coming from a no win guy where Tom Brady hasn't done that in the last couple of years.
And, oh, what is that? Well, there's a reason is a couple of reasons for that, first of all time to the system so well, it didn't afford in the opportunity to do it for the crew that wants to get all over again for saying he's gonna be there in Tampa.
That's not a slap in the face of the Patriots.
That's because he's going into in system new teammates.
He wants that acclimated.
Any good quarterback would do that.
But when you look at the NFL having to suspend those now, you're talking about possible delay of training camp.
Now you're talking about possible delay of preseason games, and if that happens, you're gonna have to delay it into the regular season as well.
Even if they decide to hold training camp close to the public, close to fans and what not.
There's still a level of preparation that has to go through.
So, yeah, I'm not seeing how they're gonna be able to do it.
I think it's wishful thinking.
I think they're trying to get optimism into the fans and let everyone know the NFL is still the only game in town, but eventually realize if it's gonna catch up with them and I think they're gonna have to postpone it at least for a little while.
Ah, no, I agree.
I was I was looking for this is the problem that I have.
I have, Ah, a very small attention span.
It wasn't anything you were saying.
Like I was listening to what you're saying.
You said, you know, they were wishful thinking.
And, uh, well, naturally, my mind goes to two eighties pop music, but, uh, no.
Look, um, I agree.
I think there is, you know, just a lot of eye there is.
There's just a lot of wishful thankful, wishful thinking in this coal situation because, um, again we see other leagues across the world, other sports events get cancelled, and the NFL has again stood their ground.
And, Well, excuse me, the idea that that you know, the draft can go off and there's a feasible way to do it.
I think it's gonna be a disaster.
I think there's gonna be issues upon issues and it's really gonna you know, ultimately, it's gonna hurt the general managers and the teams that were you know, we brought this up yesterday that are, you know, kind on the hot seat here, and it's like all the sun and your team building without one hand tied behind your back.
And so, you know, again, I think there's it's just it's just so hard to tell where we're gonna be at a week, two weeks, three weeks from now And I think that's the biggest issue.
So, um, once again, folks, thank you very much for kind of barren through us here, we're going to try to get this video issue fixed.
I think again, it was just, um you know, a lot of people using the Internet, and sometimes sometimes it just does not want Thio cooperate.
And I think that's what we're getting here today.
So, uh, tomorrow we're gonna be back.
I was going to join us again and then Friday, like ancient, uh, the other day, Evan Jones, R F p c uh, wrestling managing editor will join us.
We're going to talk a lot of wrestle me and stuff like that that's coming up this weekend.
So, Mike, I want you to have a great day.
Enjoy. Stay healthy.
Cook some great cab stopped there.
Something like that, you know? Listen, I really definitely the Sinatra will be flooded, right? friend.
Now. Thank you for the invite. Absolutely.
Oh, it is a pleasure to share the microphone with you.
And I wish you the same.
Have a great day and not stay safe, buddy. That's right.
And folks again, we will be back tomorrow.
Going to follow on Twitter that f p c ray alive.
Um, the show are the radio station follow at full press radio.
I am at a G l e m 31 of course, Mike is AT and t a.
