00:03:26
Now sorry about that other way.
00:03:29
J.
00:03:30
K.
00:03:31
Thomas.
00:03:32
He's one of my favorite running backs heading into this year's draft class and for a number of reasons.
00:03:36
Now he is my number three guy.
00:03:37
When it comes down to it, I do have DeAndre, Swift and Jonathan Taylor, which we did last week with the player profiles a week ago.
00:03:44
You go ahead and check them out.
00:03:45
Of course, any time you want to on replay.
00:03:48
If you subscribe to any one of the Facebook, YouTube or SportsCastr channels and J.
00:03:52
K.
00:03:53
Dobbins is my number three guy.
00:03:55
Now, the thing about Jakey Thomas, he's really hard because it's very it's very close.
00:03:59
It's not like there's a big teardrop from DeAndre Swift, Jonathan Taylor to J. K.
00:04:04
Dobbins.
00:04:05
I would have them all in that elite running back to your group.
00:04:07
As far as the NFL draft classes, this general draft class is concerned the only one I really have kind of a a tear down from would be can't acres, which are gonna be doing in the next of pro player profile Spotlight video that we have lined up for you guys and I'll be later on today, J. K. Dobbs.
00:04:24
He can.
00:04:25
He can do it all had a very successful career, especially last season.
00:04:28
Of course, we're all well aware what he was able to do on the field a season ago, and he just brings a ton to the table.
00:04:35
He has great balance.
00:04:37
Great lateral quickness.
00:04:38
That's one of the biggest things I've been pretty much impressed up when I've been reviewing J K.
00:04:42
Dobbins tape so far this year.
00:04:45
Is that his lateral quickness in between the tackles being able to make guys miss in tight areas.
00:04:51
If you're able to do that at the next level, that is going to make you a productive back time and time again, being able to make make guys miss while you're nd small holes of the NFL.
00:05:03
And, of course, he's got a doc your frame.
00:05:04
He's got a little bit of a bigger build, 5 10 about to 17.
00:05:08
We're gonna get to watch them in the combine pretty soon because his 40 yard dash, I think, is going to be a big key into whether or not he's really going to one of being a first round pick or what or where.
00:05:18
He's gonna wind up being a second round pick, and it's going to be the difference of Can he run in the four fours, or is he more of a 45 guy? It's gonna be very interesting to see.
00:05:26
I do see on film.
00:05:28
I could see it going either way.
00:05:30
It's pretty close there because there is times were able to have breakout speed.
00:05:33
He's got very good games, but there's no there's no doubt about that.
00:05:36
But there's other times it seems that he may not have that extra gear necessarily like a DeAndre Swift does, Which is why I have the honest with a little bit ahead of him in that regard.
00:05:45
But he could still do it all.
00:05:46
He has very good vision.
00:05:48
He has great hands.
00:05:49
Second best hands to DeAndre.
00:05:50
Start coming out of this running back draft class, just an all round guy.
00:05:54
He can be a featured guy.
00:05:56
He can be a guy who couldn't do all three down to the work because he brings that skill set to him.
00:06:00
He has a big enough of a built, but my concert.
00:06:03
As you can see, he's probably going to be in a running back by committee early.
00:06:07
And what I mean by that is by the next Khan there, just below it, he needs to work on his blocking.
00:06:13
His past blocking is I don't want to say horrendous, but pretty close to it.
00:06:19
He consistently Mrs assignments.
00:06:21
He doesn't have very good technique.
00:06:23
These are some of things that we are going to review while we go through today's show while we go through today's film.
00:06:28
My player cop to him is Melvin Gordon in the style that he runs.
00:06:33
I know That's not really a ah a ah, a popular Or should I say common? Um, Comp there for him? The Melvin Gordon.
00:06:40
But the way when Mel Gordon came out of college, one of things that made him so exciting to me and why I thought he should actually get hired in the first round of what I was confident he was going to be a pretty good players, that he could do the things where he could.
00:06:52
He could run for power, but he could also bounce off of guys the way J.
00:06:56
K.
00:06:57
Dobbins bounces off of guys and mixed guys get miss in the open field reminds me so much of Melvin Gordon, his lateral quickness, the way he jumps in and jumps out.
00:07:04
It's not that I wouldn't call it a jump cut.
00:07:05
It's like a soft juke that he just a little sudden movements.
00:07:11
Little son.
00:07:12
Moving side to side is what really makes him be able to make guys miss on a consistent basis.
00:07:16
And Melvin Gordon did something similar when coming out of college has been able to do something similar since being in the NFL and has a similar to have a body built where he could do all all all down work.
00:07:26
Did you want all three downs? You can.
00:07:27
You can, You can.
00:07:28
You can catch the ball.
00:07:29
The backfield obviously, is a very good runner.
00:07:31
He has good vision.
00:07:32
So, Jake a ****.
00:07:33
It reminds me a lot here of Melvin Gordon in that sense.
00:07:36
Obviously a great cop, obviously a lot to look forward to when it comes to what his future could possibly be.
00:07:42
And a lot of it, of course, is gonna where he winds up going just like any one of these guys.
00:07:47
These guys we talked about, a lot of their Valley's gonna depend on where they go, what their situations are possibly going to be, especially in J. K.
00:07:53
Dominique's case, more so than a DeAndre Swift more so than a Jonathan Taylor because of his past blocking needs.
00:07:59
So much work.
00:08:00
I just I don't know what kind of role he's going to have early on and beat.
00:08:04
It is a fantasy football show.
00:08:05
We do kind of look at it from that perspective.
00:08:07
What kind of a player you're going to have that kind of valuing have early in your career.
00:08:11
And as far as a redraft perspective goes, I don't know if I'm going to be looking to take Jake a dominant any redraft weeks, unless I know something happened in the summertime and he winds up being given the starting job, whether it's due to injury or situation, he happens to wind up in was being favorable to him, even though his past blocking is not going to be the greatest.
00:08:29
But if he winds up on a competent team, which is a pretty good chance of happening, because if he does go in, the first round's gonna probably be to a playoff team that I don't think there's a great chance that he's going have a lot of playing time at least especially early on in the season.
00:08:40
So I don't know if I'm gonna be targeting him and read.
00:08:42
Dr Lee's going to kind of depend a little bit, but because that I do know there's gonna be a red flag on the back of my mind now.
00:08:47
Dynasty leads a totally different story. Dynasty Leagues.
00:08:50
You could take him, you know, third pick right after you take a deal just with the Jonathan Taylor.
00:08:55
Whatever you decide to do there.
00:08:56
You can take him right away.
00:08:57
He's going to have value later on in his career.
00:09:00
He's gonna be one of the star running backs, I believe later on his career.
00:09:04
For sure.
00:09:05
I just don't know how much values going tohave right away because he needs so much work in the past block situation, which is the biggest deterrent for rookie running backs to get on the field with some consistency.
00:09:15
Now, before we go ahead and break down on a break down before we go ahead and break down the film on J.
00:09:21
K.
00:09:22
Dobbins here, I do want to talk about one of our new sponsors that we have here E S P M plus.
00:09:27
Now with these guys here, they're one of our newest sponsor's taking out.
00:09:31

00:09:39

00:09:40

00:09:45
There's really been a great opportunity.
00:09:47
I'm glad they gave us this chance to really promote their work, and it also helps us the show Get put on a situation where we can actually get our names out there as well.
00:09:56
So make sure you go ahead and check that. I'll check out those links.
00:09:58
You can go to the website w w dot M d f f show dot com sponsors last affiliates to access those links and check out deals that are possibly available to you guys.
00:10:08
So before we go ahead and get the film up, just give me one second to do that here.
00:10:14
One of the things that we're going to do for, um moving forward doesn't talk about the show real quick.
00:10:20
One of things that were going to do moving forward for, uh, you know, our schedule coming up is that we're gonna be doing once that one episode of weeks, starting March 20th all the way up until July, and then we're going to be doing two a week until we get the season started.
00:10:35
So I just kind of want make you guys aware of that.
00:10:37
What? That schedule is going to look like we're gonna be having more guest on for the podcast I'm going to be touring around more places, so make sure you are following us on social media.
00:10:46
Ah, for all those things make and and making sure you know exactly where I'm going to be.
00:10:50
The NBC News poll show is going to be for you.
00:10:53
Now, without further ado, let's go ahead and get into the film here for J.
00:10:58
K.
00:10:59
Dobbins on the other side and right away.
00:11:01
Play one.
00:11:02
What we have here only back this up a little bit for you guys, so you can see the formation.
00:11:09
All right.
00:11:10
So, like we always do, we're going to run through the first play.
00:11:14
And then the second time we review that play, we will go ahead and break it down for you.
00:11:19
So let's go ahead and do that here.
00:11:21
And you guys tell me what you see on this one.
00:11:23
See how good you guys are getting as you've been watching these player profiles spotlights.
00:11:26
You can spot it without me.
00:11:36
All right, So what happened here? This is the play that I'm talking about.
00:11:39
This is a example of J.
00:11:42
K.
00:11:43
Dobbins not being the best at pass protection, not getting with the best technique, not always making that assignment and that this is one of the things that, like I said, he just he just has to work on a one to review it here on the film.
00:11:54
So, you see, you got three receivers, you got tight and you got a running back you're going against Ah, 335 It's a man blitz.
00:12:00
So this is where Dobbins has to show that he can improve if he's going to get on the field earlier in his career.
00:12:06
What, necessarily just his rookie year? Because after his rookie season, I don't see this being in much of an issue anymore.
00:12:11
But if you're looking for men to redraft redraft situation or if you're looking the drafting and diets to expect great value out of him right away, this is what he's going to have to vastly improve on in the summertime.
00:12:20
For him to get them on playing time, you're gonna need to have that happen.
00:12:23
So let's watch and break this down right away.
00:12:25
Okay, so now he's fine here.
00:12:27
He attacks the line of scrimmage.
00:12:28
She gains ground, he breaks down, he's getting ready.
00:12:30
That's all.
00:12:31
Fine and good and he's wearing these debate now when he will be back this up a little bit now what he's supposed to do here as a running back.
00:12:38
When you're in pass protection here, your postal work inside out and one of things he doesn't do, though he doesn't get all in inside.
00:12:46
He needs to beam or in the middle here.
00:12:47
He needs to be more behind the center.
00:12:49
He's a little too out behind the guard here.
00:12:52
That's not where it needs to go.
00:12:53
You need to take another half a step back inside and then worked his way inside outside in.
00:12:58
This situation is kind of working his way from right to left, and you'll see why that one's of getting him caught in a bad situation.
00:13:04
So now he pops out, it works, right? The left.
00:13:06
He's not all the way inside to begin with, and all of a sudden, boom, here comes a defender.
00:13:11
He pops out where J K Dobbins just side stepped out of now.
00:13:14
All of a sudden, he's gotta make up the ground and you're in terrible situation here because the defender already has the leverage here because Jake Addams just bounced back inside.
00:13:21
So now he's gotta backpedal to try to get back over.
00:13:24
And he already has the edge on this one, so he just shoots the gap.
00:13:27
Dobbins just throws an arm, doesn't really get much on him, and all of a sudden the quarterback has absolutely no where to go.
00:13:33
He has got to get better at this part of the game, but is one of the few weaknesses that he does.
00:13:38
Ah, half.
00:13:39
So let's not get overly overly concerned about what his overall value could possibly be.
00:13:45
Just based on that now for the second place.
00:13:48
His burst through the line is what tells you that he's definitely not just a novel prospect, one of the elite NFL prospect that you could possibly see coming up into this NFL draft.
00:13:59
Now wash the first play here.
00:14:07
So as you saw there, great, I'll loosen.
00:14:09
This did have a big hole of run through, but runs through not just with speed, not just with explosion, but also runs through with power.
00:14:16
And he's able to make guys miss in the open field and pick up the first down his base offense here for an urban mile.
00:14:22
How state team through receivers tight and running back to going up against nickel defense.
00:14:26
This is something that J.
00:14:27
K.
00:14:28
Dobbins can just make make you hurt, especially have that kind of hole.
00:14:31
So, first of all, great job by the offensive line to kind of open up this lane form.
00:14:34
Great job by the receiver, The crackdown.
00:14:37
This linebacker never saw this receiver coming, and that's really what sprung this.
00:14:41
This run wide open safety come tries to come up, tries to make a hit, and J.
00:14:45
K Dom just gives him a little sidestep.
00:14:47
That right right there is a great example of what just reminds me.
00:14:50
Kind of Melvin Gordon says that little, little, subtle side step where I could just completely make you best bounce out to the outside and have the athleticism to finish off the run.
00:14:59
And I love that.
00:15:00
He tries to give him tries to get the defender there at the end.
00:15:03
A nice little pop.
00:15:04
Rather, he actually stepped out of bounds right here, but I love that he always tries to finish his runs as much as he possibly can.
00:15:11
Now, in this play, we backed it up a little bit now in this play here, we're going to see his hands on this plate, and it's not gonna be a big is not gonna be a big play that he makes, but it's going to show you why he does have these goods hands he does, why it has such a high grade in that regard.
00:15:26
And while he might be second only to be understood in this area when it comes to running backs in the NFL draft class was watching first play here.
00:15:38
Like I said, not a big play.
00:15:39
The Fender made a nice little tackle, but washing actual throw washed the actual catch on here.
00:15:44
Now, course on this one, it was, you know, I'm having a hard time getting those paws exactly where I want it, for some reason.
00:15:50
But he was a A base formation through receivers, one tight end, one running back versus a 335 of Michigan State and washed the throw from the quarterback.
00:16:00
It's going to be high, and it's gonna be a little bit behind.
00:16:03
And this is something.
00:16:04
A lot of running backs can't make this catch as cleanly as J. K.
00:16:08
Dobbins does here.
00:16:10
You saw that there he had a reach up, reach back a little bit, snatch the ball out of here out of the air.
00:16:15
A lot of running backs.
00:16:16
They had trouble with that.
00:16:18
They really d'oh and it's It's not a heart.
00:16:20
It doesn't look like it's a hard play until you're actually out there on the field.
00:16:23
You're trying to run away from the quarterback.
00:16:25
You're trying to run full speed down the sideline to get some momentum going.
00:16:29
Why're catching the ball looks the ball in and is able to make a great catch off of that? And I'm just very impressed with the way he's able to adjust and able to keep going in stride like it says doesn't wind up being a big play, but it just shows you how reliable of a receiver he can be.
00:16:44
Even in situations that maybe don't show up on the staff, she don't show up on the highlight reel.
00:16:49
When you go to watch film on J.
00:16:51
K.
00:16:52
Dobbins as you usually see any, there's plenty of tape on him off course with him catching the ball, making a big play.
00:16:56
But that's kind of why I want to show that play in particular kind of show you the things that you don't really necessarily have to see him explode off of shows you what a good job.
00:17:05
But he does all the time now in this next play this.
00:17:09
We're going to see a lot of patients and in his vision in this play and is one of the things that I really harp on when it comes to rookie running backs and how good they could possibly be in the NFL.
00:17:20
Do they have this aspect of their game down? Can they actually show you? They have great vision because this is going to be the difference between being a college physical specimen, type of running back and actually being an NFL pro and actually being an NFL star and somebody who's going to put up great production for you when he goes to the next level.
00:17:39
And this vision is a big key when it comes to running backs and he displays it greatly here.
00:17:44
So let's watch the first time around.
00:17:45
We'll break it down on the 2nd 1 Now, just on the surface, it doesn't look like he does a lot, but we're gonna break down, watch his eyes.
00:18:02
He read the entire blocking scheme the entire way, and he's not.
00:18:07
He's not just looking where he's supposed to hit the hole and just go and just pick up what he can or trying to break a big one.
00:18:13
For the sake of breaking a big one, he is reading his block scenes higher way here.
00:18:16
So now, of course.
00:18:17
Three receivers, one tight.
00:18:19
Have one running back. You're going up against nickel defense.
00:18:21
Outside zone Run, as you could see on that, which something that became very popular washings.
00:18:26
40 Niners go through the playoffs is something I think you're going to see more of, not just in the standing hand for United System, but I think you're gonna see a lot more of this being how successful it was in other places this upcoming season.
00:18:37
So this is kind of a typical play that teams are going to look at to see if they can actually run with Jakey Dobbins and because of his vision and is cut back ability.
00:18:45
He's gonna be very successful when he's able to be on.
00:18:48
The team is going to utilize these outside runs outside zone runs the way some of these teams, I think, are more so going to this season.
00:18:54
So NASA ball here we got the pulling guard comes out ***y edge, tight end, ***y edge receivers air out.
00:19:04
He's blocking the inside guy.
00:19:05
So basically, you're just gonna run down the line.
00:19:08
He's gonna look for the whole for him to cut up in.
00:19:12
There's no set.
00:19:13
Things just it's an outside zone running.
00:19:14
Gonna You're as a running back.
00:19:17
You are waiting to read where it is that you can stick your foot in the ground and cut up the field and get north and south reason the whole time.
00:19:24
Being patient, he's not.
00:19:25
He's not sprinting here.
00:19:26
He's not going full go.
00:19:27
He's not going as fast as he can, because if he was, then all of a sudden the defense will flow to a particular spot, used the boundary and they would be able to just kind of knock him out of bounds.
00:19:35
I don't give a couple yard game.
00:19:37
He's utilizing his speed and his quickness, and he's being patient, trying to set it up.
00:19:42
Now, now, getting towards the line of scrimmage.
00:19:44
This is good.
00:19:45
Still reading he's still not looking to go.
00:19:47
He's still reading you still waiting for that hole, that he wants that cut back Ling.
00:19:50
He's still looking for it.
00:19:52
He's gaining, gaining towards loud screams.
00:19:54
Like supposed to do.
00:19:55
And then bam right there soon is the safety, and this is This is key here, so I'm a back up a little bit.
00:20:01
As soon as this safety comes outside and said it inside, that's all he's waiting for.
00:20:06
He's getting him to commit to the outside zone.
00:20:09
Is getting him to commit toe outside, contain the second he does that.
00:20:12
He knows that he can cut up the field.
00:20:14
He's also reading his blockers, but right here, because his where his backside is, where his backside lined up is where he knows that he's going to have the blocks set up for.
00:20:24
So he's also waiting for that sets it up, gets the guy to commit toe outside zone, the blockers able to give his backside towards the inside.
00:20:34
So he knows Bam right there is where you got to cut the field and go and then he shows off his power, his speed, his ability right there to pick up a good game.
00:20:42
It's things like that.
00:20:44
You're not gonna see that on the highlight reel as a decent run.
00:20:47
But it's not run.
00:20:48
You're gonna you're not gonna see him breaking for 25 yards.
00:20:51
But as things like that reading, his eyes looking where he's looking for his blocks, he's always being patient.
00:20:56
He utilizes his athleticism to set himself up for chunk gains for Gash plays, and that's when I think that makes him really an elite type of running back.
00:21:06
In my opinion. Now next play here.
00:21:08
We're going to see a lot of power and balance out of J K diamonds on this one.
00:21:11
We got four receivers running back is going to be against dime coverage.
00:21:14
Let's watch it on the first play.
00:21:15
We'll break it down in a second.
00:21:22
All right? Look how many guys you just drag with him to go to a first down and bounced off of basically.
00:21:26
So as you see, you come here is very similar type of play.
00:21:30
Do this a lot zone all the although Alphonse alignment are going zone down blocking now.
00:21:38
Northwestern is not the best thing in the world, obviously.
00:21:41
So this isn't the greatest competition because if it was theirs, play really should have been blown up.
00:21:46
Look at what? How deep the office alive.
00:21:48
It It just shows you kind of like the difference in competition a little bit, but still shows great power and balance in this one.
00:21:54
So first res the whole has set up gives north and South right away on a one kind.
00:22:00
And now he's now he's going full speed.
00:22:01
Now he's gonna bring the thunder, gets through a Noron tackle and then starts to get low.
00:22:07
It's got 1234 Pam lowers his shoulder, gets over, the guy, goes over the top, drags him for first down.
00:22:17
That's what you want to see when you have a running back who can catch the ball the way that he can already back, who can play the finesse game the way that he can.
00:22:25
But it also being able to bring power to finish off runs that isn't all tool running back, that is, the guy's gonna be successful at the NFL level, So I got one more play to show you guys, and this is where he does get to show off his speed a little bit on this play and and this kind of bring us up like I want to see what his 40 yard dash is going to be, because I think it's going to be the big difference.
00:22:45
Whether he gets draft in the first round or gets drafted in the second round.
00:22:48
It's going to be a matter of Can you run in the four Fords or is he gonna be more 45 guy? But on this play, you actually, to see him break out so you can kind of be the judge a little bit on this one.
00:22:57
We'll watch on the first play and they will break down on the second.
00:23:11
Now, see, look, regardless of what he winds up running in the 40 yard dash.
00:23:17
The one thing that is clear is that he definitely has the game speed to hit home runs when they become opportunities to him to be able to hit that next gear on the next level so that that's the most important thing.
00:23:27
When you're looking at a star running back where our future start running back, do they have that extra gear? They can.
00:23:31
They make that big play and he definitely has that regards of what he winds up running.
00:23:36
But this is just a very impressive run to me.
00:23:37
First of all, office line did a great job.
00:23:39
He has a lane right there, boot.
00:23:41
It doesn't get much clearer than that and just blows right through it.
00:23:46
Now he's out in the open field.
00:23:47
This is where I get a little bit curious.
00:23:49
What's for Yard Dash is going to be because has this offender just tried to make the tackle rather than trying to strip the ball from behind? Because you're going to see William goes to make the tackle.
00:23:58
He's gonna try to punch the ball out rather than just making the tackle that that's what allows him to kind of fall off there.
00:24:05
That's why I'm kind of questioning.
00:24:06
Okay, how much is your elite speed necessarily, But like I said, the one thing that is clear is that this guy has the ability to make the big play and that's really all that matters at the end of the day.
00:24:20
So I hope you guys all enjoyed it.
00:24:23

00:03:29
J.
00:03:30
K.
00:03:31
Thomas.
00:09:21
K.
00:09:22

00:24:23
