Good evening, everybody.
And welcome back once again to the full press coverage.
I am Ian Glendon, and you are joined not by Brandon Ray, even though his screen is frozen on the screen right now.
So it's a very unflattering photo of Brandon.
No, I am actually joined by Mr Ryan. Advert Dorada.
He is the F B C 40 Niners Managing editor.
Tough one today, huh? It was Ah, it was looking good for about 95% of that game.
And then things kind of just fell off the rails And, ah, what happened? What happened? Yeah.
I mean, not great.
The quote madman.
Yeah, but, um, it was 55 minutes of off the 40 Niners playing their game, you know, just kind of suffocating the opposition.
And the last five minutes, it was they played scared.
I mean, there's no other way to look at it off offensively.
Defensively, they just seem to be playing scared.
And I mean, you can't do that in this big situations.
Yeah, And look, this is certainly something, and there is definitely ah, no way.
He's going to be able to escape this.
What? Kyle Shanahan now has this massive ****** on his back that, you know, is about 10 times the size of the one Steve Young carried on his for so long for the 40 Niners.
And that is Ah, the very, uh, unflattering label of being a coach who is now blown to, um, double digit leads in the fourth quarter in the Super Bowl.
Now, of course, he was the offensive coordinator.
I'm not gonna put all the weight on him.
You know, a lot has to go in Dan Quinn and the rest of them.
He was a very key figure in both of these.
Uh, you hit the nail on the head.
I feel like they played scared at the end.
They were, you know, certainly not.
Ah, on the side of some favorable calls, I think, towards the in favor of the chiefs.
But again, at the end of the day, there's no excuse for not being able to Ah, continue what was working for you? I don't understand.
When you have, ah, 10 point lead, why you don't run the ball? Um, you know, keep at the very at the very worst keep them off the field and you go three and out and basically hand the ball right back to Ah, very quick strike offense That really had not gotten anything going.
All, um, we'll see are all game really to that point and really just kind of capitalized on a few opportunities.
Um, at the end of day, what's What's the for you? What sticks out the most as to why the 40 Niners last, Like what? What? Keep play? What key moment really swung the momentum for you? In your opinion, I mean, we can point to the 13.
15 where, um, it looked like, Honestly, we're just, you know, Jimmy Ward got turned around and, you know, they had that one.
That was that one big play.
Really? That's what it came down to.
You had that play and then you had the play were Watkins just beat Sherman off the line, and that's all. It was.
Just He had a step on Sherman, and, you know, it was, you know, big play.
Those two passing plays really are what are what really shifted the ball game.
But, you know, you mentioned it just now.
You know, you're wondering why you didn't run the ball in? Um, actually, it's weird.
It's weird, but it's interesting because Joe Buck actually made that statement towards the end of the game where I believe it was that I believe it was the position when they got the interception, the second reception, where they know they ran the ball on first down, they picked up like 78 yards and then suddenly they threw the ball twice.
And then it was, uh it was a month.
So I mean, you look at that.
You're just wondering especially, um, on that last drive, you know, you're you're looking at it and you're running the football and you still have time to run the football.
You know, you have all three time outs.
You have a minute and 50 seconds left and you get a good chunk chunk run and you just suddenly start throwing it and you're just wondering, aware, where is it going? I mean, I already see a lot of people who follow the four diners of people that I consider to be, you know, pretty pretty, level headed people who aren't just gonna freak out and just kind of say, what? You know what? You go with the winds and everything and, you know, it comes down to now.
The doubt becomes, well, is Kyle Shanahan able going to be able to ever win the Super Bowl? I mean, this was probably his best chance at this, and I mean, it came down to him in the second half, especially in that last quarter where he just seemed like his offense just got really vanilla, which is just shocking for a couch on an offense.
Well, here's the thing, too.
And I was really touting Jimmy Garoppolo and I thought for a while we talked right before we went on online here that freely, for the most part, he I thought he play outplayed Patrick Holmes and you can still, in a way, make an argument that, you know, for the majority of the game he was the better quarterback, and Patrick Holmes just obviously took advantage of the right opportunities.
But, um, that that play that that passenger or that pass interference offensive pass interference call to Jimmy Grah Na George Kittle was really to me the biggest thing because we saw a play and into me, I thought regardless of whether or not that was completed or overturned.
I thought that was a huge play for both those guys that showed you that, Jimmy, You know that Kyle trusted Jimmy enough to make that play to make that throw.
And you could see, I think they tried that again.
Obviously with Emmanuel Sanders late in the game.
And it was it was off by a little bit.
But, um, I thought that they were gonna go back to that play to kill because I thought that was there and and again, I I thought that was a pretty weak pass interference call.
I don't think you should've probably They should have probably called that.
But at the end of day, that's the end of the half.
And you know, you you can't dwell on that.
Um, you know, towards the end of the game, because again, that's not going to get you an extra points by complaining about it.
I just think they missed a golden opportunity, because again, um and this is some I'm gonna ask you here in a minute, but the Super Bowl M v p.
Did not play a good game, and, you know, for? For all the you know that the hype and accolades that are that are heaped on him.
He was a beneficiary of a lot of players around him doing the right thing.
And that's that's not a knock on.
There's not supposed to be a knock on him.
It's supposed to be B A.
You know, Liv, let's judge all these players in the same light.
You know, if you're gonna judge one player, you know, I won't say the names.
I mentioned them enough forever today.
Um, if you're gonna change, if you're gonna judge one player in one way judge judge every put player the same way.
And in that sense, Patrick Mahomes certainly, Um, that benefited from his from his teammates around him.
So in that sense, I ask you, do you think he deserved the M.
V P? I honestly don't think so.
I thought I think this is a you know, I think Damian Williams got robbed, To be honest with you, I mean, yeah, I'm right there along with you were talking about it earlier, before we're on errors.
I was expecting him. T give it to Williams.
Um I mean, granted, I did When I was watching the game, I was with a buddy of mine and I told him, you know, because he looked, he looked at it and he's a He's a radio shine.
But you know, he's not a huge football fan.
And he asked me, like, you know, do you think they wouldn't give it to my home because he hasn't played very well And that's, you know, that's someone who, you know, didn't really have a rooting interest.
We need just watching and hoping for a good game.
And, you know, he noticed that.
Okay, what? Mahomes hasn't looked very sharp, and he he expected that Williams was going to get it to.
And I told him, You know, it kind of offhandedly that, you know, if if they end up coming back and winning the game and go home just makes like a good throw or two, they're probably just gonna give it to him because it's a quarterback driven league.
I mean, I think that the 40 Niners win that game, you know, they get another couple of first downs and he'd run out the clock.
I'm pretty sure Garoppolo got that would have gotten that M V P.
So I do think Williams deserved it a lot more mean He iced the game with that run.
He was able to break a few tackles and get.
He also had I believe that he got two touchdowns today, so we had the touchdowns.
He kept plays alive where they would have been forced down.
Now they would have been dropped short of the sticks, and I feel like he deserved it.
But, I mean, it's not surprising that they would give it to on the quarterback.
No, and and I And in that sense, I I I'm not gonna fight that cause again.
You know, it is a quarterback driven league, and and I firmly believe that they're the most important player.
No matter what you have on both sides of the ball on the field at any given moment.
Um, but again, you know, I I look at it as I can't really think of one difficult or big time throw and and again, I'm nitpicking here with, uh with Patrick Mahomes.
But even the big passed down the field.
It was a huge duck that just kind of lobbed up and and for whatever reason, at times the 40 Niners defense just their coverage was so loose on some of these guys, like I was shocked at how open they work and into me again.
That's that's why I look at this performance by my homes and say, like, Look, he didn't have a great game.
That's doesn't mean he's not a good quarterback.
Certainly don't believe that.
I think he's a really great quarterback, but, you know, you also have to get past the narrative that's been building about him.
I mean, I had to see a story today talking about like he has a behind the back pass in his ****nal.
Like really like, Come on, let's let's let's pump the brakes a little bit on it.
Um, I do think you're right, though I think that probably they would've leaned towards Jimmy G for the M V P if things kept the way they were, However, I don't I think they would have put in some serious consideration into guys like Debo Samuel Or, you know, who knows who would have, you know, made a play down the stretch there.
But yeah, how you know, So, looking at the 40 Niners in particular, cause obviously, you cover the 40 Niners and have a very strong interest in and and knowledge of the team.
How does this team respond? Because, you know, look, at the end of the day.
Yes, it's disappointing, but this is a team that was four and 12 last year, just a couple of years ago.
Looked really kind of out of sorts in terms of what direction are they going to go now? They have a guy who, yes, they're going to be questions still remaining about Jimmy G.
And like you said, yes, they're gonna be questions about Kyle Shanahan.
But, you know, compared to a lot of situations in the week, uh, I'd be pretty enviable of the 40 Niners, are you? Um, a pretty prize positive about the future.
I'm very excited about what can happen, because obviously you had a lot of new parts.
It'll be interesting to see what they do with wide receiver position, because you Emmanuel Sanders, is ah, free agent.
So it'll be interesting to see what they do there.
It'll be interesting to see what they do with the contracts for Garoppolo and for Collier. Check.
You know, do they try to restructure those? How does those work? Um, you know, seeing what they do along the offensive line because you could see our drop off.
Obviously, the Ford Underground, the ball Very well.
But the struggle that times with past production.
And it seemed to struggle on the interior with really the right guard and, you know, really, both guards.
Honestly, both of them kind of took turns having some struggles there. The end.
So it'll be interesting to see what they do on offense.
But there's a lot more excitement with that because, you know, you have the pieces they're already defensively.
Expect a regression.
And the reason I say that is because you're gonna probably have to decide who you're gonna keep your not gonna be able to keep everyone on that starting defense right now, Eric, Arm stated, becomes a free agent.
You're gonna have to fear if you want to pay him the money.
Because you already have.
I believe it's like 15.
Some Some odd 1,000,000 goes to D Ford.
Jimmy, Jimmy Ward is gonna be a free agent this year.
I don't think they're gonna be able to keep him.
So you know, you have to figure out Are you Are you hopeful that you can have, um, various more? Who's gonna be able to step in? Are you gonna have You gonna have a lot more of pieces to have to move around on the defense? So I'm excited, you know, in the fact that yeah, next year they should have a team that will again contend.
But I mean, this this was the best.
They've had the least best performances they've had, and I would probably put it on par with defensively on par with the 11 2400 defense, if not better, because of the things they could do and the versatility they had.
But, um, you know, looking ahead, I mean, it's just hard to get past the fact that this was this game was theirs for the taking, and and they gave it away at the end.
So there is that frustration there.
It's a matter of Okay, well, you know, there's not a lot of draft capital even in this upcoming draft, you know, Do they, you know, draft movie drop backwards in the first round, Do the pick up more second and third picks, you know.
What did they do there? That's gonna be very interesting.
This this draft right here will determine if this team is gonna keep contending for the next couple of years or if they're just kind of going to be a flash in the pan in and kind of fall, fall along the wayside, possibly in just the next one or two years.
Yeah, And look, it's not supposed to be an overreaction or anything like that, but, you know, you have to consider what happened with the Atlanta.
And and as much as I think that the 40 Niners aren't gonna go the way Atlanta did, But the similar cir***stances having the having the lead late, of course.
You know, blowing it, Kyle Shanahan, all this nonsense, uh, it's gonna it's gonna weigh heavy on this team, and this is gonna be an important factor for them moving forward there.
This off season is going to be about getting over this because, like you said perfectly, I mean this this was their game.
Like I honestly, like I'm having a hard time when I look at this thinking At what point in the game was Kansas City, the better team.
And aside from the may be the last five minutes of the game, and even then I don't really think that they were that much better.
They just capitalized on the few opportunities that were handed to him.
And that was, at the end of the day, the biggest difference.
Ah, I thought I I thought San Francisco even, you know, when they fell down early 10 to 3, I thought they were still, you know, doing pretty well there.
They were kind of keeping the Kansas City offense and check.
I thought they were They were moving the ball well running, and I thought it was only a matter of time.
Uh, you know, before that they really took control of this game and heading into halftime, I thought they had all the momentum.
So, you know, again, for three and 1/2 quarters, you know, San Francisco was clearly the better team.
And you could even argue that they were right on par with Kansas City at the end.
They just, you know, can City happened, you know, cash a couple checks.
So, Brian, I I wish we were the two of us this morning.
We were the only ones who actually pick San Francisco.
Um, I will do that again 10 times out of 10.
If I had a chance to redo it, I would have still picked it and live. It would be in wrong.
In fact, I was very wrong in this.
I said very specifically that there is no way that a Kyle Shanahan led team could blow another double digit lead.
And here I am, here I am.
But my one redeeming quality is that throughout the day I am on my third wardrobe. Change that.
Yes, that's right. That is one more than J.
Who is going to say that I wasn't as good A.
J Lo right? I mean, I'll be honest that, you know, in our household today when we're watching the game, we had a little debate going.
Um, and we sided with the fact that we would rather just watch Akira do the entire halftime show because there was just more entertaining.
There was just more entertaining with her.
So, um, the fiance leaned with a she she lean with J lo, but the rest of us s 03 to 1.
It was, ah, leaning toward Shakira.
I mean, it was okay.
It was in Okay, a halftime show.
But, um I mean, yeah, I was you know, you're right going back to this morning, you know, just talk.
Everything that we're talking about.
They came down to look at the end.
I had said if the forerunners play the way they normally play and they play their sound defense, if he play there, would they do on offense? They'll win the game.
And you're right.
It came down to the defense, suddenly had issues making tackles, and they got lost in coverage a couple of times.
It comes down to, you know, the Chiefs did just enough.
The pressure, their offensive line. I have to give them credit.
They did just enough to give.
The home is just enough time because, you know, he was running for his life.
And I think the past Russia, What is the reason why he struggled a lot for tonight? But you know, on that big throw on a 13 15 where he found fiery kill wide open, You know, he had just enough time where he was able to backpedal long enough to get the throw off And where you had, um, that one play over the top with Emmanuel Sanders were Garoppolo missed him by about a yard.
You know, he Garoppolo had someone right in his face, so he kind of just just threw it up there.
You know, he didn't have a chance to to really get the throw off, So that's what it came down to.
It was both teams had to play really just one play that would have won or you lost the game for either one of them.
And enough players on the Kansas City Chiefs made the play at the same time versus, you know, the 40 Niners.
And I think if you know if if even if you know what that play that went the Tent Cities way on that 30 15 you know, if Garoppolo just has another split second to throw the football, you know he finds Emmanuel Sanders probably for the game winning touchdown with about a minute left.
And, you know, we could be talking about a completely different outcome.
So it really just came down to the fact that the Chiefs, you know, they were playing to win the game.
They were, you know, you could see that at the end.
And defensively, offensively, you know, people that play on the field.
And really, I think the coaching staff, the 400 just were playing toe, not lose, and and that came back to bite them in the end.
No, I I agree completely.
And look that that pass wasn't that far off.
I mean, I kind of I got up out of my seat cause I was like, Oh my God, this has a chance to be complete And, you know, then it just kind of fell out.
And look, there's there's There's one thing that that, you know, gets overlooked being, ah, obviously being a Patriots fan and someone who falls.
That team has enjoyed quite a bit of success, but at the same time we've also as a fan of the team experience on a spectacular defeat, and it doesn't get easy.
It certainly isn't easy, and these are things that the team certainly will dwell on fans will dwell on.
The important thing is that the team moves on from this, they have to mentally move on from this.
They can always remind themselves that they lost this game and build off of this.
But they can't let it get into their psyche because we've seen it happen to other teams.
We've seen the mental aspect of defeat take over and really stunt the growth of a young team again.
Who has the potential to be in this mix for the next couple of years? So this isn't a team that, you know, put all their eggs in one basket, tried to capitalize on a very short window and failed? No, this is a team that has the pieces like you said, to continue to succeed and be in the Super Bowl conversation.
It's just it's gonna be a tough pill to swallow.
And fortunately, when you lose the Super Bowl, you immediately start the next day at 00 So because every theme starts I knew tomorrow.
So, um, silver lining my friend's silver lining.
Ah, you gotta, you know, positive mental attitude.
That's how I like to look at it.
That's how we get over these losses.
But Ryan, thank you very much for joining me.
I know this is us.
Hopefully been a, um, a a way to kind of exercise those demons and help move on very quickly because, as we know in this business is kind of tough.
You can't kind of hibernate.
Um, like I used to do in the past.
Whenever the Patriots lost a tough game, I would kind of go away for a couple weeks.
I don't think I watch sports for about three months after Super Bowl 42.
Unfortunately, with this job, we can't do it.
We've gotta kind of face the music.
So I appreciate your showing up, Ryan, let the folks out there know where they can follow you.
And of course, Ah, where they can read.
Obviously full purse cover dot com.
Um, just a lot of great stuff on there, Whether it's for me or anyone else on our team.
Everyone does a great job, but also on Twitter at Ryan Advert Arata.
All welcome aboard or also at FTC underscore 40 Niners.
We're gonna have a game recap out by tomorrow morning.
Um, and then also later on that we just kind of, you know, a little bigger of a breakdown to just kind of see what happened kind of postmortem, but yeah, that's gonna come out this week and in the following week.
Honestly, it's gonna come down Thio.
We're going to start looking at the draft coverage like you just said, You know, there's no real time off.
Start looking at some draft coverage and trying to figure out you know where the pieces are gonna are gonna fall for the 40 Niners.
And we're definitely definitely gonna be looking forward to that, cause again.
The NFL actual season may be over, but this is This is about the busiest time of the year for the folks over here in a full of press coverage.
