Everybody's Jerry Bailey.
Thank you for tuning into SportsCastr Live joining me right now.
I mean, it always gives me a moment of his time whenever he can.
Sporting News College football writer Bill Bender.
Bill, You've had a busy week, I know.
And I appreciate you giving me a little bit of your time today for more on young man.
So obviously, there was a lot to expect going into Monday night's national championship game.
I thought that Trevor, Laurence and Clemson would perform a lot better offensively than they did.
I thought that the 25 game win streak that they had, I thought that was gonna be their experience in the playoff.
I thought that was gonna be of the story of the game on.
Guy thought that they were gonna end up winning.
But obviously that wasn't the case job or a plate.
A flawless game.
Was this more about Ellis? You playing extremely well, or is it more about the offense of Clemson? Kind of not showing up and playing as well as everyone thought they would.
I think you were doing something.
I think experience show only about 10 delicious, most drives, but well, that's a free press is calling butt out.
Tell us you startled me.
And I think, uh, you get 52 Yarder to chase for touchdown.
A little bit of a bullet will do that.
That's what a well L s u to get going.
The rest was just a show by your borough. Obviously. Yeah.
Spectacular, spectacular finish in the arguments about them being time.
Well, I think they might.
They have got to be in the conversation for a least the greatest of my lifetime.
I mean, beating seven.
AP Top 10 Seems Jo bro having arguably the greatest season for a quarterback of all time in many Pascoe Brandon for the all time touchdown, past record and I season, um, is that I think that we can say at this point, it's pretty much done deal that not only is Joe Borough gonna go number one, but is it a done deal that chase Youngers number two tow Washington like they should mean that strips like sense didn't die.
Obviously, I think you will revitalize the Bangles on base in Ohio.
He wouldn't do bro beans.
Not just Louisiana, but southeast Ohio.
Ohio State and everybody loved him.
And I think he's a guy that can help attributable in Cincinnati.
His confidence, the way he plays.
I love to take there, give the risk in the dynamic pass rusher.
I mean, that's how I would drive him there.
What happened now for Rachel? But now, obviously, the Sonics saving a lot in the coverage of the national championship game.
There's been a lot of talk about Clemson.
Is the new dynasty in college football that Alabama's rain seems to be over.
A lot of people down South obviously think that that's far from true.
Obviously, Dylan Moses was lost their quarterback on defense barrier early in the season.
Um, do they believe in Mack Jones as their quarterback going forward? They're still in the top five odds to be.
I'm in the 2021 national championship game.
Obviously, it's really early to predict that, but it has Alabama.
Is this kind of there? Are they still legit or re kind of seeing the beginning of the end with Alabama? Or we still gonna be able to see them in contention for a national title? They got a title, you know, talent to contend for a title, and then they probably will make sure Matt Jones blessing there. You got to work.
I played in high pressure Iron Bowl.
They put up a bunch of points breaking Michigan and before game and played well, distributed the ball.
So there are might actually benefit from something like that now for expression while coaches.
And then when the job took the other tongue about Lola, Um, Alban is gonna have enough talent to compete for a national championship blow on the coast.
But to your point, yeah, there's another championship.
The census here they didn't.
They just weren't good enough.
Getting it stops in big games.
So that's something that's going to be changed and order for them to take the next step next season and get back to where? That saving it so custom be.
Do you think that Clemson's gonna be playing with that giant chip on their shoulder all year? Because I think they came out with the odds on favorites to win it next year.
Obviously, Trevor Lawrence comes back, but they do.
Is Tea Higgins Ah, big part of their offense.
Travis E T N will be gone so They're losing a good amount on offense as well as defense through the draft.
How do you see them rebounding from this loss going into the 2020 season? Yeah, I think you're on to something there, too.
I mean, they're they're gonna be ranked number one in most publications just because of Triple One's coming back, because the talent on both sides and another one recruiting class of people and then you put on at the chip to get complaining that games.
Finally, someone short.
I think he wants in a lot of ways be like to have some level with this year's where you face you lost the championship game.
How it will respond to that.
People will be off of him a little bit.
Probably sold, but that won that game.
We'll see if he responds to and I will and I got Dabble handled themselves with complete class, have lost their money.
Ain't nothing but great things to say about Ellis.
You didn't make excuses civil lawsuit Yeah, and complimented seniors, and that's what most good football coaches did. Believe it or not.
Now, speaking of Ellis, you after the game, obviously we saw Odell Beckham Jr handing out cash, too.
The players Is there gonna be some ramifications from the way that come down from that? Because everybody saw it.
It was confirmed that it wasn't just fake money.
It was really So is there gonna be some sort of punishments handed down because of that? Because obviously that seems to not be allowed.
Uh, it was just for show.
I I I just not do that the future player or a former player and, you know, we could bake America what it really means, but I you know, I think it's harmless on a lot of levels, but at the same time, just don't do something like that.
That's a lot of Del honestly players always was to do with that situation that probably in a moment of winning the national championship on the NFL, better receivers, although you name a lot that are better than him comes out on the field.
Yeah, it was something that kind of blew my mind.
I thought it was fake when I first saw it, but yeah, I think it was a very lapse in judgment, thereby Odo to do that and get everybody involved in that so we'll see how that plays out.
Obviously, there were two more teams in a cart full playoff.
That being Oklahoma.
Uh, Jalen hurts.
Obviously not gonna be back next year.
And then Ohio State, a team that has always seemed to be on the fringe, the cream of the crop in the Big 10.
Where do we see those two teams in terms of a playoff picture next year? Because you know that Jalen Hurts won't be back for Oklahoma, but Justin Fields will be back for Ohio State.
Where do we see both of those? James, in terms of conference in possible playoff coming in the next season? Long still be safer in Big 12 Other existential Rat, where they go to the transfer portal again and test their look.
Their energy to be Big 12.
So somebody beat our somebody else wants a visual championship.
I mean, the fact every number two across most publications.
Justin Thiel's the talent.
They haven't receiver and defensive end.
Now that Harrison will fill in for Keisha probably emerged.
Looks big thing there, so I think those two years will be right back in the playoffs.
Makes where they've been, Everything will see that and definitely did it prohibitive.
Favorites wasn't constantly in the conference.
I mean, I'm getting the drama.
Will some of those teams start? And then we've got another pretty decent quarterback class.
We didn't have the deepest one last year in terms of the draft.
Obviously, the Big Five and 20 I think, was 2018 when Baker, Sam Darnold, Rose and Alan and Lamar all came out. All went first round.
This year's another kind of similar case where Justin Herbert's coming out.
Burrows gonna go top.
Um, Jacob East and Jake from Jordan love Utah State of me.
There's a bunch of guys who are getting a lot of attention.
Then you got Jalen hurts.
You could maybe even sneak his way in there.
Do you see how many quarterbacks do you see going in the first round? Do you see? Maybe three or four of them are Teresi, maybe five, even six of them going off the board before the first round's over.
We'll see where it goes.
Um but, uh, I think obviously burrow will go in the first round that Herber Tropical Thio I don't know.
There's a problem.
We'll see how we test out at the combine and threw the football on those things he needs to do.
I don't know if I need another guy, will.
But he never did.
As you know, you want to watch, transparent that somebody, maybe even unexpected pops up in the process would be Tom buying.
Well, Scout from the mountain gave Jones last year.
There will only be a guy like that.
And, uh, I won't be surprised if that happens again.
It's gonna be fun, because obviously, we always have a guy pop up that no one really talks about going where they go.
So I guess I was Daniel Jones before, And then I think Blake Bortles is kind of a guy who emerged out of nowhere.
So when he got drafted and he wants out of life, So I mean, we've had a lot of fun stuff happen in the draft, so we'll see what happens.
I always appreciate your company.
You know, you've had a busy week, so I'll let you go.
Thank you for a good 10 minutes, and I'll definitely talk to you soon down the road.
Okay. sounds good. Thank you. All right. Thanks, Bill.
That's Bill Bender.
Caution about writer to the Sporting News.
Giving us the insight on some college football's of draft stuff.
Always want to talk to him as always.
But what a championship game that was man Trevor, Laurence and Clemson.
Cut Came out early, took a 17 to 7 lead, and then it was the job, bro.
Show the rest away the long touchdown pass to jam our chase.
He ran the ball really well.
And then another touchdown pass to chase in the back of the end zone.
Um, I think was inside the red zone.
Um, Thadeus Moss had a couple of touchdown receptions.
Jefferson played really? Well, um, so many guys that are gonna go in the first round from this game on the defensive side.
Isaiah Simmons, um, felt in the corner back.
So they've got a lot of talent on both teams on both sides of the ball.
They're gonna be first round talents, and then guys like Travis easy, and it'll be early second round talents are first round talent and go early in the second round.
So there's a lot that could come from this.
I don't want to share this guy with you guys.
Um, earlier today, on the NFL on wrap up guest with myself in Kurt Thomas.
Sir, we did do our top 10 mock drafts, so I'll give you a little bit of a taste of that, um, head over to Spotify.
Apple bought gas.
You can find that entire segment to close out the show.
So that was a lot of fun to do with Kurt.
So I'll give you a little bit of a taste of mine.
Do well say top five and then tune into NFL in rat to get to the Final Five of mine and Kurt's first mock draft of the year.
Again, we only do.
The top 10 will wait a little bit until, ah, free agency keeps going until we see kind of more pieces get put together for each team.
But we did do a top 10 and so I'll give you my top five as of right now, give you reasons why, As I told Bill, I think the top two are pretty much all but guaranteed.
At this point, it would be Joe Borough going one to Cincinnati.
He's an Ohio kid, um, the best quarterback season in college football history that he just put on, Ah, great reforms in the national championship game.
They need a quarterback, um, Andy dollars.
Time's pretty much up in Cincinnati.
So go Go Joe Borough.
He'll be the new quarterback of the Bangles, and I think he's gonna have a great career for a decade and 1/2.
So Joe Borough goes number one to Cincinnati.
Maybe that convinces a J.
Green to stay whether they decide to move him tag and whatever they decide to do.
Um, but I think Joe broke it at a lot, Um, of you could bring a lot with him that could convince guys to stay.
That could bring in different for free agent guys that could could do a lot for Cincinnati.
So building offensive line around and they need help.
They need to give him help in the secondary as well on defense, and the defense is a lot of of revamping.
They need a pass rush.
They need better secondary drinker.
Patrick's been there for every been their number one.
He's not really a number one guy, so we'll see what they do in the secondary.
James the pass rush.
Um, I think that the guys that they do have, ah Dunlap's kind of past his prime, so we'll see what they do in terms of their past.
Russia's well, but they definitely need help on the offensive side of the ball for Job er to be successful and get them wins.
So I think Jo Bro goes number one, I think.
Chase Young girls number two.
I think the Redskins have knocked it out of the park so far this offseason for them, hiring Ron Rivera and Ron Rivera and turn hiding, hiring, uh, Jack Toh Rio as this defensive coordinator, a guy who's been very successful in the NFL.
I love the higher.
They got a lot of young talent on that defense.
Whether it's Jonathan Allen, have they stolen number 17? A few years ago, he projected top five pick and he slept all the way to Washington.
They got Monta sweat last year.
Dwayne Haskins really showed out kind of last month of the season.
He really came alive with Terry MacLaurin.
We'll see how Darius guys his health is in terms of the Redskin success, but in terms of their defense.
I think Chase Young would obviously at an extremely good young pass rusher opposite a Ryan Kerrigan, a good gotta learn from Landon Collins, still in the secondary.
He was a solid pick up.
I think Josh Norman's gonna be gone by next year.
They're gonna find a way to move him.
So I think that getting Chase young and getting a solid front seven and then kind of building the secondary through free agency, maybe get a corner through free agency and then draft a few, I think that their defense will be on the right track.
Yet join Haskins.
Another piece on offense.
Fixed the offensive line a little bit.
I think Washington's making the right moves.
I think they should be between a 6 to 8 win team this year and, uh, give teams a tough out every time.
Number three is the Lions.
I have them going.
The top cornerback in the draft, Jeffrey Lakota from Ohio State.
So a couple of Buckeyes going back to back a two and three.
I think the Dairy Slay obviously still a very good corner, but he's coming up on the back nine of his career for a cornerback.
At least, um, Detroit secondaries gonna be.
They're gonna need to help that passwords because we don't know if snacks Harrison's gonna be coming back.
His emotional postgame presser after week 17 signifies that maybe he won't be back.
So I think they need to get a good secondary and then a better pass rushers.
Well, because their interior line of snacks isn't there isn't gonna be very good.
ANSA is still gonna be a solid pass rusher.
So I think there's a need to tighten up in the middle of their defensive line, maybe get another linebacker to back them up.
But I think the secondary, maybe they need a solid number two guy alongside slay toe, learn from.
And then eventually, when Darius slays kind of past his prime, Okuda can take that number one spot and their secondary will still be in good hands.
So I think that a code is a very good pick for Detroit is the best quarterback in the draft, and that'll be where Detroit goes.
Number four is the Giants, another team that needs help all over the defense.
I think they go pass rusher thing to go a.
J at Vanessa from Iowa.
1/2 sacks this past season.
Four forced fumbles.
The guy was very dangerous off the edge for the hot guys.
Um, while the Giants do need it need help in their secondary.
Their secondary is pretty bad because they're past Russians really bad.
They didn't have anybody getting to the quarterback, which led to, um, more passing opportunities, longer passing plays because they had all day to throw.
If you got a guy like F Vanessa who can come in and make it make an impact right away, I think that helps out the secondary.
Um, a very young secondary to the cut.
Generous Jenkins, Their best corner following a social media.
Um, is it called a scandal? I don't I don't know the right word for it, but the thing that happened on Twitter get rid of generous Jenkins.
Now, they really don't have a solidified number one corner, so they need a pass rush to help out the secondary.
Happiness is guys projected to go in the first round, One of the better pass rushers in the draft.
I could see the Giants taking him and number four trying to give their pass rush a little bit of help.
And then number five.
There's a lot of speculation of what Miami will do with their three first round picks.
I think they still use that number five and take to a tongue of Diallo.
There's a lot of speculation around to his health.
I think it was gonna be good enough where Miami takes him, and then they're used the rest of their picks in the first round of get on offense of Linemen.
Which I'll get into, you know, in the future when I do my entire first round mock, um, but I think it's how it's gonna be good enough where they feel comfortable enough to take him.
And they try to build around two and hope that he's their guy for the next 15 years.
A quarterback and the guy's gonna be right in the ship so we'll see what Brian Floors and company do in Miami.
But as of right now, I have them taking to it.
So again, that's my top five.
I'll give you six through 10 if you head overto Ah Spotify or Apple podcast head up, NFL unwrapped with myself and Kurt Thomas Er and we do our top 10 mock to close out The show was really good show, so definitely tune into that.
So again, thank you to build better for his time.
Thank you, everybody for tuning in.
