the following takes place between a m and nine.
Good morning, everybody.
It is Monday, November the 18th 2019.
Right on cue. Right.
With the right date, I think.
I think Yes. November the 19th.
No, no. November the 18th.
Oh, off to a great start.
Good morning, Mike.
How we doing? You know what? I'm gonna even gonna bother with the rest of the intro, because I'd probably call you Scott or Steve or something.
So, Mike, Hello? How are you doing this morning? No, no.
Uh well, you know, I assure you, I've been called worse.
So you know, Scott or Steve? Probably not so bad on the list.
But, you know, all in all, it is Monday morning, my friend.
It's a gloomy Monday morning up here in the north.
Uh, not sure what the weather down there is.
Thio, you know, the south and floor.
Yeah, it's actually kind of cold, so, you know, cold and dreary here on the East Coast and you know, But we are here.
We are fighting through the weather.
We're fighting through the desire to just, you know, whatever.
Just stay in bed or whatever or just, you know, whatever we we we are here for you.
And that's exactly what we what we always do here on NBC Radio Live because we love our listeners that much.
Ah, the Patriots, obviously only one by seven.
So I'm sure people like like you like to say, are just teetering over the Tobin right now.
Just just ready to jump off because they only won by seven.
Have they never seen such panic, Malays and vitriol? And in one incident in topic conference Right now, it's a little mind boggling, my friend.
I just I'm not able to quite put my finger on it.
I have we really become that accustomed to just saying that you have to absolutely dominate the game from start to finish and not allow any points and put up.
I mean, essentially, if the Patriots don't win 82 there's something wrong with them and they're starting to.
There's there's some sort of crack in the fifth.
There's some sort of crack in the foundation here in the linguine.
I guess it's just it's mind boggling to me.
I am getting tongue tied.
If you can hear that focus that is not definitely put on.
It's just it's be finding a way to both the fumble words and also to keep from using words.
I probably shouldn't here on a Monday morning here on NBC Radio Live.
So you know what? It's Ah, I'll let you have the microphone.
I I think I need a moment to take a sip of coffee, compose myself, come back down on earth a little bit.
Uh, all yours, my friend.
Yeah, I'm already two cups, and it's it's it's eight o'clock on a Monday.
I needed a couple couple extra cups and ah, you know, if if I had the Keurig machine right here, I'd be making one during the show as well.
So actually, no cook it right up to my veins, you know? You know the whole deal.
No, it's look, I mean, they they were They were beating teams for 25 30 points earlier in the season, and they were like, Okay, well, who'd have they played well, okay, great.
They just had a really good road win on the, uh, went on the road against a really good team in the NFC.
So you know what absolutely.
People have to remember that the Eagles are a good tea.
Yes, they had some people out yesterday, but that's a team that is very, very good at game planning.
Doug Peterson, for all intents and purposes, whatever you want to say about him, he is very good at developing game plans and for only 10 things at quarterbacks, especially an opposing offenses that they've never seen before on defense and on offense is, well, I mean, that's a specialty.
I mean, I know we heard the term Philly special about 19 times yesterday.
You know which I tell you.
I really, really saw great tweet from our own, our own.
How bent our good buddy, How put out a tweet yesterday that said that every time he hears the word Philly special, it makes them think of the the Angelo Steak Sandwich special, which I thought was great.
I really thought first of all was appropriate for so many reasons.
The cheese steak connection to Philadelphia was great, but all in all, I mean, it really is true.
I mean okay, yes, it happened two years ago.
We understand the play.
We understand what happened.
I do want to give the CBS crew a little bit of credit yesterday.
From what I understand, they show the replay of the Patriots doing that back in 2015 same exact play.
It looked almost identical.
So for all the junk that we throw at the national broadcasts at times about a New England slander and all England bias, kudos for letting them do that, reminding people that it wasn't filly that came up with that.
They ran it well, they ran it, you know, to to a Super Bowl, Let's face it and give them all the credit in the world for that.
But they did not invent the play.
That was a play that was dialed up by Josh McDaniels two years earlier.
And, uh, and done very well, by the way.
And I'm gonna give myself credit to uh, no, I can't.
There's no way for me to prove it, because I was obviously watching the game by myself, as I tend to do.
And if people don't know me, if you have a Super Bowl party, don't invite me.
Just just don't I don't I don't want to come.
I don't want to socialize.
I don't want to hear about your weekend.
I don't want to hear about your day.
I just don't care about anything going on in your life.
If we should have that isolated as a sound bite as a huge production for this trip, I don't want to know that that that might be good.
And and again, it'll it'll serve, as is a warning to people if they decided they want to invite me.
And I tell people that's all the time when people come over the watch.
Like like you can watch But But shut the hell up like I don't I don't wanna I don't want to hear about your boring, mundane day and And look, if I were you, I'd be saying that to me because I want to want to hear about my day if I were somewhere else watching football.
Okay, look, I'm getting off on a rant, and clearly people were getting an insight into my personal football watching views.
But the point waas when I was watching that Super Bowl and I saw the place start to unfold, that's exactly what I said.
I was like the Patriots did this and I was like, Oh, no! And then there it was.
And that was the exact cause.
It was It was, you know, look, it's easy to remember because it was against the Eagles.
And obviously these things have a little bit of ah ah, you know, symmetry to it a little bit of ah, you know, it's it's just how it works it sze sports, you know, obviously it's a copycat league.
They saw that play.
They thought they could work it in clearly their game set in that their game plan in that game was to just pull out everything that they had to beat them and they did and credit them.
And that was that.
That was 650 some odd days ago, but whatever, Um, but yeah, I remember seeing that play live, and I'm just a man like, you know, just just wait.
If they meet in the Super Bowl this year, you're gonna get a double pass where three quarterback, those two receiver receiver throws to a wide open receiver in the back.
So we saw that from the Patriots.
That was that was a little bit nifty.
They had to get a little creative in the, uh, in the end zone.
Um, I think everyone is, and and I guess we've been the closest to the Marshall Newhouse defenders that you could possibly find.
But, um, I think I can speak for you myself and everyone that follows this team, at least you know, appropriately and doesn't look just on the surface issues.
I think everyone's gonna be happy to get eyes there.
Went back next year next, Lola.
And without any question. Yeah.
And I think you're going to see that impact right away.
Because again, we thought we're gonna get to every game.
You know, obviously, we had a jam packed Sunday, and we have a great game coming up tonight, Um, between obviously the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Diego Chargers in Los Angeles.
Uh um, So hopefully hopefully that'll be entertaining.
But we're gonna We're gonna focus a little bit here on the Patriots and Eagles, So Ah, look, the Patriots couldn't run the ball.
There were times where there guys were just coming in just freely into the backfield, and they they were unable.
And this has been kind of the theme.
The last several weeks, they have been unable to establish any sort of consistency on the ground, and therefore it kind of it kind of affects how they start games because obviously they want to start games by controlling the clock and moving up and down the field.
They get forced to go into a hurry up, no huddle offense, which, yes, they're really good at and they can move the ball.
But it's just something you don't wanna have to try to sustain for 60 minutes.
You want to be able to control that clock and run the ball and all that.
So I think Patriots fans are gonna be very happy to see Isaiah win.
And I think certain, um, number of media folk are gonna realize that help how silly some of their, uh uh, projections have been interning with this team when it's like, Oh, yeah, Isaiah one won't make a big impact.
No, no, he really is going to make a very big impact on this team.
Yeah, I mean, don't forget the Patriots let Trent Brown walk in free agency.
They could have locked him up with a franchise tag, albeit it was a high price but they could have locked him up for one year, kept him under control.
If they had any doubt that Isaiah Win could handle the duties that left tackle, they did so because they saw something in him that allowed them to believe this guy can protect Tom Brady and solidify the left side of that defense.
You're taking a look now at win and tuning, as opposed to new house in tuning.
And look, I know you know, I've been trying to be the biggest advocate for defending Marshall Newhouse and saying It's not completely his fault, and it's not all his fault.
And quite honestly, folks, it's not.
I mean, there's not anything that you can put on him and say he is the only reason why the Patriots are not moving the ball on offense.
It's certainly virtue lies in the middle.
But to say that he is not a big reason why it's probably disingenuous of me or of anybody that would make that statement.
You saw some of the I looked at film last night trying to review and of course you know all 20 two's not out yet, but you know, we're trying to you know, review what you can possibly see.
And I looked at some of the game replays and sound bites that you can get.
And there were several opportunities where you saw Newhouse was not able to cover the defensive front by the Philadelphia Eagles.
He was able to blow by him, get pressure on Brady and Brady got knocked around last night.
Anyone who watched her listen to Tom's post game press conference.
I have never seen him that frustrated after a win.
He looked like a guy that had just been beaten from pillar to post, to quote the late, great Avila Monsoon and really, I mean, he looked He really looked like he was just, you know, bringing with, you know, with with frustration.
And I don't see how anybody can look in, of course, and that's gonna be scrutinized.
And people are gonna read into it, and they're going to say this and that.
And well, that's why he's not gonna come back next year.
That's why he put his house up. Brazil.
I'm waiting for the hot takes to start developing on that, you know, they've already started, and they're gonna only you and they're gonna get worse.
See, that's great.
No, no, no, no, no.
See, that's not stabbing levity to the situation.
You know what? That calms me down.
That's looking young Frankenstein the other violin music and calm the monster down You play that that'll shut me way.
Sense that I'm going on my rant.
Yeah, when you sense I'm going on my ranch just play that metal That's like serenity now from I like you, But not In any case, I say a win provides so much more protection.
First of all, he's a better natural athlete then Marshall Newhouse is he's quicker on its feet.
He's lighter on his feet.
He's able to make plays that and defend plays that, unfortunately, Marshall Newhouse just isn't used to doing.
He's not a starting left ankle in this league.
You know, I saw some tweet last night about old the D defended on Aaron Rodgers.
Pretty quick text. He was on the right friggin side.
That's why you know, I mean, thes people even look at statistics, and they even bother to do any homework that they just tweet stuff out and throw, you know, toilet paper against the door and see if it's gonna know exactly what you're talking about because I actually get a comment about that.
I was like, Yeah, OK, because, uh, like thing really? Because I I'm sitting here laughing because I'm like, Yeah, because they're the same exact situations one was in 2011 and one is in 2019.
It's like, don't even bother talking about the context of the whole situation.
But again, that that that doesn't really matter.
I mean, we see people get up here and talk nonsense.
I mean, hell, we talk nonsense all the time, but, you know, speaking specifically about the people that have that national audience every morning and afternoon, unlike, you know, the big networks on TV and all that stuff, you know, they go up there and the 80 each and every week they show that they don't watch the game.
I mean, you know me.
You know, I have a certain affinity for a, uh, a certain host of a morning show on FX one, and I I just People ask me all the time, Why don't I even bother with it? And it's just to me, it's I feel like I'm doing a service by pointing out the stupidity.
Like to me it it shouldn't go unnoticed like, Yeah, I'm assuming a lot of people don't watch the show. Yeah, it's on early.
The reason I watch it is because there's really not much else.
What are you gonna do it? You know, I've already seen SportsCenter highlights eight times over at this point.
You know, NFL seeing prime talk, you know, give give whoever Balda called, like six times already at this point in the day.
So you know when 6 30 rolls around and I'm up, you know? Hey, whatever.
Whatever's on Plus, it always gets me fired up because he always says stupid things and said, You know, it sits there and Ramones and talks about how Brady is the biggest problem this team has and clearly ignoring the fact that you know, injuries and again missing Isaiah Win is also an issue and and, like look, feast.
Other teams are struggling with injuries as well.
It's not an excuse that's just part of the game.
But you can also look at the big picture and put it into context better and not sit here and look like a buffoon going up on TV? Um, you know, spinning, spinning the, ah, 10 around it.
I'm doing it on camera, you know, sitting there trying to act like, you know, you got some sort of authority on the topic when you're just making yourself look like an idiot, and it just kind of exposes People are exposed you to other people, thinking like Okay, well, clearly he didn't watch.
And you know what? He formed a narrative, and that's that's it.
So, um, you like Huey Lewis and the news? Okay.
I was getting a little I was getting a little off topic, so we're gonna We're gonna bring her back to the, uh, back to the focus.
And that is seriously, Do you like Huey Lewis and the news? You know, um I know the answer. That question.
It's obviously yes, you know, the power of love back in time.
Those the and he said, Well, I mean, there's there's a pretty good catalogue.
This all right? You know what? We feel that entire show on Genesis and I think we lost, like, 3/4 of the listening population that we start going it.
Although people love you and you really do have to, you know, can you know, But I'm afraid you're just too darn loud.
Okay, look, I'm I have a whole lot of things planned for the show Going off on another ah, eighties lyric and and song Title Tangent is probably not what I was planning on doing, but I'm certainly a medal not for this show.
But you know it's gonna happen eventually.
Well, my my plan one of these days is to somehow work in every lyric to an entire song within the hour and see if you can pick up on it so suddenly, like, say, all these lyrics and see if you can you can you figure it out.
But you'll never know when I start that maybe it's today.
Maybe it's it's tomorrow.
If it's still like, you might have to catch up a little bit, but no.
Well, I I don't Even I had a great buy.
I'm serious, I swear.
I had a great point.
Oh, actually, it's not a great point.
It's just a comment.
Uh, one of my favorite clips from Family Guy one of the early seasons is is Meg comes running into the house like, Oh, my God, I missed the news.
Sory spots is we all miss the news, Meg.
Just Huey Lewis needs time to create.
I die every time I hear that because I just to me it's It's that's That's my sense of humor. That's that.
Try little quick witted Ah, bar back a fortnight.
I like that, but yes.
Look, we spent the first almost 20 minutes of the show, Doctor about the patriots and the Eagles and idiots on FX one.
But we had a lot of things going on in studio action packed day yesterday.
In the end, No, Absolutely.
So I guess I'll ask you.
And you know what? What did you learn? Because we try to say what we learned and what You know what we didn't learn? What kind of you know, spitball off those topics blood up.
I guess I'll throw it to you first and get myself a break from talking and the audience break from listening to me.
Um what did you learn, Mike? I learned that I learned every day and every time you play that clip, how much I really love that song.
You know, that's that's always, always good.
Um, but not in all actuality.
What I did learn is that in the NFC, it's still the 40 Niners conference right now.
Thio lose, and I know a lot of people look at it and say, Oh, yeah, well, it was a victory over the Arizona Cardinals.
They nearly lost that game, but to make the drive that Jimmy Garoppolo did in the closing minutes of that game to give them a chance to be able to, ah, win it and to be able to pull that out with something that was huge.
And I think that that's, you know, that really, I think, put the NFC unnoticed to say that the 40 Niners were able to bounce back against the division rival and get a ah victory.
And that was something that I think a lot of people were wondering whether or not they had in them.
They definitely did.
And I think that that definitely put things in perspective there, Um, Atlanta Falcons.
Ah, and this may surprise a lot of people because I think that there were a lot that work that was going on where, you know, like with everything that happened yesterday.
The Saints won the Ravens beat the Texans.
And how could that be your takeaway? What that gave me as a takeaway is that the Falcons should be so much better than their record indicates Right now.
That's one of my maybe under the radar takeaways right now.
And in that team sits at three and seven.
That's not a three and seven talent worth team.
I mean, there are a lot of people that think that seem to contend for that division this year, And I think the last couple of weeks you're really showing why came in against the Panthers team that really is was playing very good football, and they just took them apart.
And, you know, it makes you wonder, Ah, lot of what ifs, what could have been with the Atlanta Falcons if they were able to get it together earlier on and bring it all together the way that should have happened.
So that was a big takeaway from me, obviously, Saints with a big win yesterday, putting people unnoticed to say that they were going to rebound from a subpar game last week, you know it showed that maybe it wasn't the complete and utter, you know, you know, stink fest that a lot of people thought was maybe the team that the, you know, that they got beat by wasn't as terrible as people want to, you know? Have them believe so that was a big game for them yesterday.
Cowboys pulling out a win, staying at six and four now controlling their own destiny in that division.
That's a team that you and I are gonna have a close eye on this week, buddy, as they come in to Fox, borrow to face the New England Patriots.
And probably one of the biggest takeaways other than the Patriots for me, anyway, is, uh, yeah, the Ravens just continue to dominate on offense.
That is a scary offense, and it looks like they're getting better by the week.
Yeah, and And look, I mean, you'd be foolish to say like, Okay, like, the Ravens are obviously probably at the top of that list because they keep doing those things, you know, I'll still sit here and say like, you know, I say it might be a toss up between them and the Patriots right now.
Is the best team in the NFC because again, we're not just basing it on the last three weeks, we're basing it on the season as a whole.
And see, the Patriots have had their fair share of of just dominating, blowing teams out.
And, you know, say what you will about the competition.
You know, I don't want to hear it, so Ah, but the Ravens, I mean, yeah.
I mean, how can you not 41 to 7 against the Texans? Texans? I thought we're going to give him a better game.
I thought the Raymonds we're gonna win because, you know, I've talked on this show and I've talked on our PC NFL preview show.
I just I just I I won't believe in the Texans until they do it, because I've just I've seen so many times where they've been, You know, this this top tier team, this team finally ready to take the next step in, just come up incredibly flat.
And this was another example.
I mean, this was 80.
This was a huge opportunity for detection.
Is to go out and really put their stamp on the A F.
C and say like, hey, you know, we are part of the Patriots Ravens group like it isn't just Patriots, Ravens, gap Texans and the rest of the F.
You know, we're part of that group, and and if anything, they basically said what we've been saying and it's like, Okay, no, right now it's the Ravens and the Patriots and everyone else, and, you know, Texans don't look like a team that's ready, tow, compete at that high level.
And ah, it to me.
It just that it was not a good day for the Texans.
But it really great day for the Ravens, because they just keep doing what they're doing.
And look, I'm glad you brought up the Cowboys, because I think, you know, we've been kind of questioning not, you know, doubting them.
But you know, to the same sense about the schedule, they they've actually gone the route of they've beaten bad teams but lost a really good teams.
And, ah, you know, they proved a little something last week and they just continue to get the job done.
I mean, Dak Prescott is probably the least appreciated quarterback in this league, and and each week he continues to go out and just get the job done.
And trust me if we if we understand anything about just going out, getting the job done and being very good at what you D'oh! You know, watch Tom Brady for nearly 20 years.
And obviously I'm not calling Dak Prescott Tom Brady.
That'd be an insult and way too much pressure on one of them and an insult to the other.
Uh, I'm just saying that, you know, it's not always gonna be this Ah, sidearm throw, which which clearly looks like every quarterback can make.
Now I feel a side note.
I'm gonna go off a little, not a tangent, but just a little comment.
I feel like now that everything that you know, we've been told that only Patrick Mahomes can do is being done by, like every quarterback in their in their brother.
I feel like every week I'm seeing someone doing no look, pass me like, yeah, see, Look, it's It happens like it's not the most incredible thing in the world.
But, you know, let's let's relax a little bit, so I don't know.
Have you noticed that our Is it just me? Oh, no, definitely not just you.
I think we're seeing quarterbacks that are taking pages from what we've seen.
But I think that in a long run, I think you're seeing the evolution of the quarterback position.
And I think that you're seeing quarterbacks in general do things that we haven't seen a whole lot of quarterbacks do for a long time.
That's not to say these things have never been done before.
I go back and want some old footage of Randall Cunningham.
I guarantee you that you'll see some of the things that you're seeing on on, and I think Cunningham's and me is one of the most underrated quarterbacks of all time.
I really I remember growing up, watching him and seeing him do things that were really just different than anything you saw on a football field.
So it's not a situation where these things haven't been done.
How quickly we forget Michael Vick and how great he was athletically on Dhe.
You know, just his ability to run and be able to take over the game with his legs.
It just was phenomenal in a league that really wasn't Ah, uh, it wasn't really built for his style, like now it nowadays like Look, let's face it.
The league is built for that type of style.
So you know, there's a reason why you're seeing more and more of the athletic quarterbacks.
Ah, excel in this league as opposed to your traditional stand in the pocket.
You know, statute type quarterbacks, you know, it's just it's a different game, so I'm glad you're absolutely No, definitely.
I mean, you take a look at those two guys and work that they've done, and you'll see a lot of the evolution.
And look, no one's taking anything away from Patrick Holmes and his ability when he's healthy.
He's one of the most dynamic forces in the league and one of the most entertaining players to watch.
But guys like Lamar Jackson dish on Watts, and these guys are consistently putting out great games week after week.
Lamar Jackson continues to be one of my favorite players.
Tow watch in terms of highlights.
If you want a guy a red zone guy, an NFL red zone guy, he's one of your guys to zero in on because he really, really is doing amazing things with the football.
But, yeah, I agree with you to sit there into anoint the next second.
Coming, I think, is very premature considering a lot of the great quarterback play that you're seeing this year out of a number of different guys, Not just Patrick Holmes.
No, I mean like, where we live in a world of, ah, hyper hyperbole, like every everything's the greatest and everything's the worst.
And, you know everything is you know, the first time we've ever seen it, the greatest things we've never seen, and so on and so forth.
And it's just how it is.
I mean, it's it's It's the world of 24 7 news cycle.
You gotta fill it somehow and you gotta, you know, be relevant somehow.
So people are going to come out and say crazy things.
But ah, no, I again, I love watching Lamar Jackson play.
I'm as a Patriots fan.
I do want to see them play again, and it sounds crazy like, Why would you do that? Because I I want to see what the Patriots do because I do think that they would come out with something different and it's fun to see how they adjust in and try toe tryto beat on top of that opponent.
But, you know, obviously they're impressive.
The Dallas Cowboys were impressive.
I liked, you know, sometimes again, Winds, not everything is created equal.
And I learned a lot watching the 40 Niners come back from 20 down.
And, yes, it was the Arizona Cardinals.
But yes, they've been playing better as of late, and their divisional opponent and divisional opponent.
I'm never gonna poo poo based on if you win it or not, just based on what their record is, it's like, Look, it's now, it's tough.
And I think the stat was up there that, um, you know, the Cardinals that actually one.
Like what? The last five matchups between these two teams.
So there was a little bit of a hump that need to be, uh, getting gotten over for the 40 Niners, and they fell behind pretty quickly and, ah, look credit to them.
They came back and won that game and kept pays because, you know, it's not only just pressure of winning, but, you know, they got the Seahawks breathing down their neck.
They have the same absolutely on their neck.
I mean, there's no there's.
All five are of the six playoff teams currently in the NFC.
Right now, all of them have eight wins except the Dallas Cowboys.
Who said It's a war and you and you can sit here and argue and say like, Oh, well, I mean, look, they're really good Six and four team who may have Ah, you know, if luck had bounced a little bit more their way, they might have seven or eight wins himself.
So, uh, the NSC is stacks the 40 Niners, Obviously they can't afford toe really lose a game at this point because they do have that natural edge because they only have the one loss.
So in order to win the division to win the top seed and really stay, avoid one of the fifth or sixth seeds, you have to win the division and you have to keep winning.
So, you know, all the pressure was on the 40 Niners, and good for them for coming through and getting a victory.
Excuse me bigtime victory for them yesterday, and, you know, we talk about mobile quarterbacks.
You talk about young mobile quarterbacks look at Cuyler Murray.
You know the job that East on this year in Arizona.
That is not the same Arizona Cardinals team last year that basically just, you know, laid up season they've got, they're making strides on defense.
I think there are very young, very fun to watch offense, and they can put points on the board.
So that was by no means a cupcake win for the San Francisco 40 Niners yesterday.
It's a division game I always love how people love to, You know, drag division games through the mud is, you know, well, it doesn't matter because it's a terrible team.
There's never an easy game when you play a divisional opponent, especially one that you've already seen during the year.
That gives the opportunity for teams to make adjustments, to be able to do things that they haven't done before because they're seeing a team for the second time around.
That's such a huge advantage for both teams to be able to do that and a disadvantage for both teams at the same time, because now you have to worry about the other team exploding your weaknesses.
So at this point, yeah, great, great win for, Ah, for them yesterday.
Again, we mentioned I mentioned the New Orleans Saints earlier.
Big victory over the Buccaneers yesterday improved to ah lot of people in this league that they're still going to be a formidable force.
They're not gonna be an easy out and, you know, for the time being, anyway, it looks like they semi righted the ship.
Now they've got some wins to rattle off in the next few weeks here in the season.
That's gonna be telltale in terms of what this Saints team is.
Are they a team that we can rely on down the stretch to be that NFC contender near or atop the conference? Or they're gonna be a team that maybe isn't as great as we thought.
And that opens the door for a team like the Seattle Seahawks or the Green Bay Packers, or even the Dallas Cowboys to move into that that echelon as well.
So ah, lot of lessons to be learned in the NFL yesterday, and I think we learned a few.
I think we're starting to see these teams emerge on grid out victories or get victories that were expected and, you know, really kind of show you what type of team they're gonna be going forward.
I mean, let's face it, the NFC is far more compelling than the A F C.
Just because, like, I mean, really any of these teams, you know, maybe outside of the Rams on and they're not even in the playoffs right now.
I don't I can see going to the Super Bowl.
Um, at least any of the teams right now currently in the playoffs, I can see going to the Super Bowl out of the NFC in the f.
I think we're just kind of at this point.
The way we see it is we're kind of counting down to Baltimore versus New England and whether or not it's in New England or in Baltimore is really what we're waiting for.
It this point, Um, and that's not ****y, and that's not assuming anything.
That's just kind of how the FC has been.
It's it's Yeah, you know it's not, you know, at least in this these last couple of recent years.
I mean, obviously, 10 years ago, there was there was a lot more.
Ah, you know, when you talk about the Steelers, the Cold Patriots, and so on and so forth.
There was a lot more, Ah, competition spread across the FC Ah opponents.
But really, I mean, right now it's looking pretty clear that the Patriots and the Ravens are the best two teams in that conference, and they're pretty much headed towards a rematch.
Or at least I think we hope so.
And I think it should be that case of the these two teams continue the way they're going, so ah, but in the NFC, there are a lot of questions and at least a lot of, ah intrigue.
When it comes to okay, who's actually gonna come out of the NFC And, uh, so obviously, if you're listening or watching on SportsCastr actually ah, top in the chat room, Let us Noah, who impressed you the most this weekend.
Who's your contender? Our top teen in the top team in the NFC.
And, um, you know, start a start a discussion.
So I like, I like what I saw.
Um, I guess from the Rams running game.
Uh, I didn't really learn much about them last night, though.
I mean to me that the victory they had was just cut in different.
I mean, we're talking about the Chicago Bears who clearly, I mean, each and every week it's clearer and clearer.
I mean, he's injured now, unfortunately, so hopefully he gets healthy.
But it's clearer and clearer that Mitch True Biscuits, Just not the answer in Chicago.
I think that. And it's disappointing for all.
I know, a lot of Bears fans that came into this season, particularly with a lot of high expectation.
Look, that defense was formidable and everyone expected them to be a very, very big threat in the NFC, especially in their own division.
I think I don't think there's any question about that.
Maybe they didn't believe that necessarily.
They'd be the that the top echelon team in the NFC.
But I think a lot of them believe that they were gonna be in contention for it.
And you look at MIT Strabinsky now and I've been again.
I've been a defender of is for the last few months and trying to find that silver lining and some of the magic that we saw from him last year, but it just simply isn't there, and I don't know if there are intangibles.
Maybe we'll learn something after the season.
He is, you know, injured.
I don't know what his status is going to be going forward now.
Um, it's it's tough to see, but I'm a little surprised that the the defensive output is, well, you know from the Bears.
So I think it's just been a negative season all the way around.
And unfortunately, the reset button is gonna have to be set.
And I do think without question that a quarterback changes coming in Chicago.
And I think it has to because there is a lot of talent on that defense.
They will bounce back.
That's still a very good unit, and offensively, they do have some weapons.
I do like their running game, and they do have some targets, but without an adequate quarterback under center to be able to utilize those targets, the types of results that unfortunately that we've seen in Chicago is exactly what you're seeing right now.
Yeah, and and again, the question is where you know where they're gonna find that replacement under center and really, right now, there's no option outside of, you know, potential in the draft and, uh I do want to go back to Atlanta real quick.
Um, because I I must be the only one who finds a little bit of humor in the fact that they won 29 23 because, look, we can sit here and make jokes and say, Well, hadn't had they been up 29 23? Maybe, You know, they hold on to one that Super Bowl.
You know, it's a difference of a point, but I did.
I did find it really funny, and I was.
I was hoping I didn't see the very end of that game, but I was hoping it came down to them scoring 1/4 touchdown and deciding to go for two as to not make it 28.
The three and that that would have been.
I think that would have been a fun kind of way to kind of own that from in Atlanta.
Obviously, that wasn't the scenario.
They were up 26 to 30 and they feel well, you know, it's funny that you mentioned 28 to 3 over the weekend, a subject we don't touch on a whole lot here.
FBC RADIO LIVE is college football and Baylor.
The Baylor University had a 28 to 3 lead over the Oklahoma Sooners.
And guess what, folks? The 28 to 3 lead did not hold.
Oklahoma came back and they won the game.
So if you're a team and you go up 28 to 3, I'd be extremely scared.
I would be biting my nails on the sidelines.
I would be doing everything I could score points and run up the score.
I don't care what you have to do if you see 28 to 3 on the scoreboard and you're the team that's leading, do everything that you've got to do to make sure that you flip that switch very, very quickly.
You want to see again? We saw the Atlanta Falcons do it last night.
You want any other number? You know, maybe you and I know you mean you can take a negative safety and take two points off the board or whatever.
Just do something to try to get that 28 to 3 wiped off because that is a jinx, folks, it's the worst lead in football.
It's It's kind of like, Yeah, the two goal lead in hockey that the worst lead, Inaki, it's it's it's true.
It's stupid, saying I hate like maybe it's because I'm getting older, but I start.
I'm starting to hate more.
More of these stupid like even like defense wins championships like notes, Sherlock.
Like of course, you need to play defense doing it, But you also need offense like you could stop every drive.
But if you don't score points, you're not gonna win it again.
No one ever want no one ever wanted Super 00 folks, That just does not happen.
I'm some points.
I'm being a little bit of, ah, cliche Grinch right now, but that But trust me, this is only the beginning, because I'm only gonna get more agitated with a lot of these because they just get so overused.
Like I even hate the term goat like I mean cheeses.
Everything's the goat.
Like you've got a great plane.
It's like, Oh, goat play.
It's like, No, it's a it's a catch.
That's a great play, like you realize, like how stupid it, uh Okay, look, I just need to take a minute.
Relax and calm down.
Okay? All right.
It's actually, you know, to be honest, it's very soothing noise.
It's kind of just like a who.
Okay, we're not gonna go on a tangent about sports cliches today.
It's like it's like young Frankenstein.
When you hear the violin, music calms the monster right down.
It's great. It's like I come back.
I I'm refreshed and I'm like, You know, I just walk in the door like Nice to see you.
Nice to see you again, Mike.
Let's let's get it going again.
Time together? Exactly.
But I did what? I didn't want to make that, uh, that mention of that Atlanta score.
Kids, I did kind of find it pretty funny.
And I'm sure I'm sure there's some people in that room that were like, Hey, we got 29 this time.
It kind of worked out a little bit better, So, uh, yeah, but yeah.
So lookit, Lane, impress me.
Um, Thea the Minnesota.
I mean that that's that's a good comeback.
I mean, you don't want to sit there and fall behind the Denver like that.
Ah, but you know, again, credit where Credit's due and they came back and won that game.
Yeah, they kicked it into gear when they needed to, and that's what good teams do.
Look, good teams.
They're not gonna blow out the terrible teams every single time teams can struggle.
We saw the eventual Super Bowl champions last year lose two teams that they really had no business losing, too Tennessee Titans being one of them, the Miami Dolphins being another, you know.
I mean, they were just then, you know, credit.
Those teams were playing very well in those situations.
But you look at the two teams on paper and you say, Oh, the Patriot should have won those two games easily.
There's no question about it.
While teams do struggle and good teams were able to grind out and pull out those types of victories and show.
And we saw the 40 Niners do it yesterday.
I'm glad that you mentioned the Minnesota Vikings because they're still right in the thick of things as well in Ah a ah, a playoff.
Really? See, right now they really have them and they're flying under the radar in a lot of ways.
I don't think a lot of people are talking about exactly how good this team is.
So much of the has so much of the press, and the publicity is going to the 40 Niners and, you know, and rightfully so nine and one there, the tops of the division, the Packers, obviously, and eating to deserve a lot of praise, probably getting maybe a little more than they should because of the status of their quarterback.
You take a look at, you know, Seattle and you take a look at New Orleans and how complete they are on both sides of the ball.
And they have marquee quarterbacks and Drew Brees and Russell Wilson.
That definitely helps.
But the Minnesota Vikings were putting together quietly, putting together a very nice season with eight wins.
And maybe it's because it's Kirk Cousins under center that not a lot of people are taking them seriously.
I think that's a mistake.
Keep your eye on that team in Minnesota as a team.
I wouldn't want to play If I'm an NFC rival right now.
Well, I mean, think about the game changers that they have from both e running back position and the wide receiver position we saw in both, you know, kind of on full display at least over the last couple weeks.
So, you know, that's a team that again, like you said, all these other teams are getting the publicity and and they deserve it.
But, you know, thanks due in large part to the early struggles the Vikings had, um, everyone kind of formed an opinion on them and kind of stuck with it.
And that's kind of the trapped of people fall into.
They take short little bits and pieces and kind of tends to you pick and choose which ones you want to use it.
It's called a cherry picking, huh? But you look at little segments of the entire season.
It's a Oh, no, this is who they are, and this is who they always will be.
It's like, No, Well, the Vikings are looking a lot more like the team I think a lot of us assumed would be, and that's Ah, very talented team with with a decent quarterback.
I don't think anyone thinks Kurt Cousins is gonna be, ah, game changing.
You don't want to give the ball back to Kirk Cousins.
Type of quarterback, No But, um, we're seeing more and more that this team has built through the running game that built through the talent that they have in a really good stout defense.
So, uh, the Vikings again under the radar.
But they're right there.
And you know, that's a battle in that in that division between them and the Packers.
That'll be interesting to watch. Moving forward.
And obviously the Packers were We're off this week, but right by E.
This is just the bigger picture.
Speaking about Dan FC in general.
I mean, I mentioned it earlier.
You have five of the six playoff teams right now, has has eight wins.
So, um, you only have to too see.
And obviously, that's the Ravens and the Patriots at 89 wins, respectively.
So, um uh, yeah, so no, it's it's it's Ah, it's gonna be a fun watching from afar watching this NFC unfold, because ideally, they'll just beat up on each other.
And by the time they get to the Super Bowl, well, but, you know, maybe they'll just be a little bit too tired.
Um, but we'll see.
So, Oakland Oakland is another team I want to talk about before we kind of start looking very good.
Yeah, we haven't.
Yeah, well, I wanted to make sure I brought them up before we started about started talking about the Chiefs and the Chargers.
Um, so any any chance I get to play that? I mean, it's just it's gotta happen.
Uh, look, A This is another situation where you look at the record, you say, Oakland should have you handled this team? Well, you know, the only won by seven.
But, you know, they're continuing to win these games that in the past that they haven't been able to win.
I I saw a stat pop up during the game that I think they're ah, they have.
They've had, like, seven or 81 score games this year.
And it kind of speaks to this team's resiliency because they're always with in a game.
And unfortunately for them, think things tend to go or bounce their way.
This is this is starting to get really, really, really interesting and a lot.
And this was kind of gonna be a good segue way into, uh, the Monday night football game tonight that we're gonna talk about in just a moment.
But the Oakland Raiders have really started to put pressure on Kansas City.
And a lot of the pressure to is due to the fact that Kansas City, as has not played as well and lost a few games, So they brought this upon themselves.
Ah, however, if Oken wins tonight, or I'm sorry if the Chargers win tonight, all of a sudden you have three teams that are within a game and 1/2 of each other in that division.
And obviously most notably, you have the Raiders and the Chiefs, both at seven and four.
So or ah, you're similar records. I'm sorry.
I gotta double check the record.
I don't have it right in front of me.
But you're talking about, uh, what could be a pretty, pretty tough fight for both these teams having down the stretch in and for for a lot of people to assume that Kansas City was just one of the best two teams in the conference, let alone to division.
I think Oakland's surprising a lot of people, and I'm excited to see it because I think deep down I have I have a little bit of ah affection for Oakland.
And I think part of that is due, obviously to our friend Terrence Biggs, who's obviously lived through quite a bit of, ah, heart hard times with the Oakland Raiders.
And I think especially a lot of stuff that they've dealt with in the off season in more recent history.
It's nice to see them kind of actually play well.
And, of course, you know, toe kill the hopes and dreams of all the Chiefs fans out there is always an added bonus.
But look, I was impressed with how they played.
I think their cars having a pretty fine season.
I mean, nothing you know, to out, you know, crazy or anything like that.
I'm like, is ah, you know, brief run towards an EVP A few years back, Uh, but he's having a nice season.
This team is playing pretty well together, and I think there's only room for improvement.
Yeah, I completely agree with you.
And look, Oakland is very another team, very quietly stringing together a pretty impressive season.
And who would have thought that at the beginning of this year, But you're right.
Derek Carr had a solid game yesterday.
I mean, 25 to 29 292 yards.
That's a solid effort, you know, I'll be it.
I know it's against the Bengals, but it is a solid effort.
Josh Jacobs continues to impress me fourth straight 100 yard game.
Well, it extra should say, fourth in the last six weeks, Eyes really is more accurate.
But I mean, he really has been a tremendous, tremendous addition to this team's offensive attack, and he gives them a running dimension that really has just elevated his game so much as well.
So you have to be impressed by what he's done.
I really I love the way he fits into this offense.
I think they've been a lot better than people have given them credit for or ever expected them to be.
Ah, this is a team that can definitely win some gains, so you're right.
If the Chiefs do end up coming out on the short end of the stick tonight in Mexico City, things could get very, very interesting because then all of a sudden it drops Kansas City back to Cy, believed to drop them back to six and five, if that is the loss that they suffer tonight.
And with Oakland right now at six and four, you have to wonder and say, Yeah, this this could be this.
This could really, really get interesting, you know? So I I really do like what they've done. And you got a credit.
Jon Gruden, for being able to keep a lot of this together a CZ, much as we love too, you know, poke fun it Gruden at times and some of his mannerisms and some of his Hey, man, you know Ah, you know, Ah, persona.
The guy does know how to coach and he's he's proving it easy is proving it this year in taking a collection of players that weren't expected to do much and keeping them in the thick of a playoff run.
Yeah, and look, I think I said it the last week or whenever.
I loved the emotion and how he could.
I compared it to the opening scene of Kingpin when, uh of months and walks in and you know you got the, you know, burn baby burn playing and playing in the background and he just comes aunty's dance.
Any blue bulls with striking.
He starts high five and all the all the people just cheering and and all that.
And that's how I I looked at the whole.
Gruden seen walking off the field in Oakland a couple weeks ago, where he was just embracing the fans and look, the fans love him.
He loves and he loves Oakland, you know, And that's and that to me, is such a huge thing for this team, a team that obviously has not seen that that green pasture in quite some time.
And, uh, you know, at the end of day, I like what they're doing.
I like Jon Gruden, and I think he's, I mean, how many people? And it's funny to think like how many people were thought, Ah, a year and 1/2 ago that Kaleo Max new team would be, in my opinion, far behind his old team.
Three Oakland Raiders in terms of where we're going and, uh, look, the Bears look far more lost without a direction than Oakland Raiders do.
At least the Oakland Raiders have a direction.
Yeah, they have some work to do, and they have a lot of options.
Do that in the future.
But, um, least they have.
Ah, at least a quarterback.
Now they have ah, Nok defense.
They have some offensive weapons.
Speaking of Khalil Mack, Josh Jacobs was one of those graphics that they got for Cleo.
So you can see the impact.
And you can see how people have really just looked at it and been like, Okay, well, you know, it's it's not as big of a deal is.
I think people thought initially, it's like, Oh, my God, Well, what you gonna do without Khalil Mack? Well, you're going to get better.
I mean, again, you're not replacing his production.
And I'm not saying he's not a great player.
But you know, sometimes it just is.
It's not the right fit in that situation.
It wasn't the right fit, and it might have been holding the Raiders back.
And now they're in a good position toe keep building what they're growing on, and in the meantime, they could make some noise in the playoffs if they get there.
So, uh, hats off to the Raiders.
It'll be fun to see that.
And again, just it'll be nice to see again.
Obviously, watching Kansas City lose tonight would be entertaining, but of course it would.
It would add so much entry to that division race and just, you know, because you, you know, at the end of day two, even even the Chargers at five and six wouldn't technically be out of it because it's so close.
And it was so many games left.
So, uh so, yeah, let's let's talk about that game tonight, way to chargers and and the C I A.
Lick its every time, every time.
And if charges are on a national TV, well, they're they're gonna they're gonna get quite the treatment there.
So, um, so we got the charges.
We got the Chiefs.
Mexico City Chiefs obviously have lost three of homes last three starts, so they're reeling a little bit.
In that sense, they we just talked about it.
There's a lot of pressure for them to win this game.
You know, they have to see that they have to see that Oakland is trending up.
They have to see that, But the idea of getting one of the top two seeds, it's probably just an afterthought at this point.
They shouldn't be looking at that.
They should be more concerned about winning that division because if you don't win that division all of a sudden you throw yourself into the muck of the wild card race and who knows what's gonna happen with that? And I'm sure Chiefs, fans and Chiefs ah, supporters are going to be too kind or too happy with a non playoff season.
Uh, after what they saw last year.
So how much pressure you're putting on the cheese right now? Because I feel like it's just just mounting on them.
Yeah, especially after last week's Lost to the Titans.
You definitely put some some serious pressure on the Chiefs to win this game tonight.
Look, they dropped six and five, and like you said, all of a sudden this becomes a two team race now in the N E A, F C West, and possibly 1/3 team as well, if you if the charges were able to pull this out, especially if they can condone it in semi.
Oh, are you are you're saying that they have to dazzle with their play? Well, when I'm trying to say is I think thunderbolts and lightning.
I don't think that that's nice.
But in any case, that's That's exactly 30 five viewers that might have just sent a convincing a coincidence.
But yeah, maybe, maybe not.
Well, that's no, no, that's it.
Well, they're all Chiefs fans.
I'll do anything for my godfather.
But in any case, if the Chargers can pull this out and if they do it in semi convincing fashion, then all of a sudden you have to start looking at it and saying, Well, maybe, are the charges starting to play up to their expectations? Are they starting to actually live up to some of the talent they have on both sides of the ball on that team? Because there is talent.
They just for some reason have not been able to put it all together.
And if it doesn't end up working out, then I and does that has to happen in the off season.
But this team is capable of rattling off a victory and the way their defense is set.
It does lend itself very nicely in to be able to defend ah quarterback like Patrick Mahomes.
They have two very mobile linebackers, too.
Great pass rushers in defensive ends at this position, in Melvin Ingram and in Joey Bosa and Boast is having a tremendous season.
You know, some buzz around him, you know, for a rough, a defensive player of the year right now.
So you have to really look at what he's been able to do and what he can do in this team.
They're gonna need a bigger game from their linebackers.
Their linebackers have been a little quiet when it comes to ***, but they have been playing good coverage.
The secondary is playing a little bit better now, so this is a game where the Kansas City Chiefs have to look at the Chargers and say, This is a very big game.
They almost have to treat it like a play off type mentality.
This is win or go home, Guys, we need this one to keep the foot on the accelerator in terms of being able to contend in a playoff spot for the A F. C.
I think if they do it, they'll be well positioned to be able to compete the rest of the way.
If they lose this one, things could start to unravel a little bit in Kansas City.
Yeah, and and Ah, look, we know the charges you brought up the Chargers and talking about like how they can get into the mix.
We know that there a second half team, you know, by virtue of the fact that generally they start to get a little bit healthier after their holy season, you know, run of injuries that they generally right every year.
Ah, I would not put it out of the realm of possibility that the Chargers starts speaking themselves into the race, especially if they win tonight, because then all of a sudden you're you're sitting there in the locker room saying like, Hey, guys, you know we have a chance.
Yeah, Yeah, we've already beat the Chiefs.
You have? So you're telling me there's a chance saying there's a yet Ah, yes, there is a chance.
And again, Like I said, I think if the Chiefs lose tonight, I mean, it really adds, I mean, regardless, this is gonna be an interesting race because the the Raiders are and she's already close in the standings.
But if the Chiefs lose tonight, it makes it even more intriguing.
Just because you do get that that third team in the mix.
It's like that triple threat match.
It's like you never really know, although, although this it's like the triple threat match where it's like, Okay, it's the rock, it's stone cold.
And then, like, Ricky, she it's like Okay, well, okay, clearly the rock and the old are the are the money, you know? You know what? I think they're there.
They're the flagship.
Look, when we had held the cell and Ricky she was in it, we knew Ricky she wasn't gonna win.
Like, I mean, what's so let's be real here.
Like it just wasn't, you know, it wasn't in the cards.
It's just, you know, so So the charges heart Ricky, she in the sense, you know, my crazy, wacky ****ogy.
I don't know if you guys were even following I'm barely following, so I wouldn't blame you if you're not.
But to me, it so it's like, you know, they're in the Mex, even though I don't necessarily think that they're they're gonna come through with it.
Um, but, you know Hey, we're gonna We're gonna We're going to Ah, we're gonna find out here soon enough.
So, Mike, I guess it's that time of the day to, ah ask you who is gonna win? And, uh, do you have score? Yes, I actually do.
And, uh, as much as it pains me to do this because, you know, you know, there's, you know, there's still some San Diego Chargers in my blood and Los Angeles.
I got the biggest just talking over there because I have Thio.
Actually, you know what? It's great because it drowns me out, and I think people would rather listen to the song would be drawn on anyway.
But in any case, I do think that the Kansas City Chiefs come out strong tonight.
I think they realize how much of a must win this is for them.
I think they make just enough plays on defense to be able to keep this one respectable.
And that's where Patrick Mahomes takes over.
And I think he's able to score some points on this Los Angeles defense.
I like the Chiefs and a closer game than a lot of people are probably going to anticipate in this.
I don't think they're gonna put up a ton of points on this team, either.
I think this is this one's got a 21 to 17 feeling to me, especially with the field conditions down in Mexico.
Something you have to consider as well.
Um, that's always Ah, negative for both teams.
So I like the chiefs in this 1 21 to 17.
Yeah, well, you know what? We're going to disagree.
And if only for the fact that I would just it would it would pain me not to be able to take the Chargers in this situation.
And, uh, you know, be able t o over and over and over again.
But, no, look, I mean, outside of me just obviously wishing and hoping and and, you know, wanting to play the song over and over again.
I do actually think the charges have a good shot in this game there.
Obviously, it's not in Kansas City, so there's no home field edge to the Chiefs that even though that hasn't really been too much of it, I was just gonna say they have really been all that comfortable in a row.
I haven't really been that all that formidable outsider era.
The very I mean it really is.
Yeah, I guess you could say that so to me, I look at this is a situation where the Chargers air just to me.
They it's just kind of in a bad spot right now, and no one wants to think about it.
I mean, they kind of just say, Oh, you know, uh, Holmes was injured.
This and the other, it's like, No, I mean their defense still isn't that great? I mean, they rely a lot on you have to get big place with this team, and I brought it up the other day.
It's like, you know, people want toe, you know, harp on brave dink and dunking.
It's like, well of homes.
33 completions last week, 26 were at the five yard mark and below.
So, um, that this team relies heavily on that offensive production from its wide receivers in the yards after the catch.
So if they're not getting that consistently and they're not able to sustain long drives than they were in trouble, and I think they're gonna lose the game, I think it's gonna be 28 24.
So it s so you know my name.
But you know, still, we'll see.
We'll say one of us will be right.
Unless they tie, then we'll both be wrong.
So exactly which might be what ultimately happens Because we tend to be both around.
I mean, my heart is hoping that you're gonna be correct simply because I just want to get a song a lot tomorrow.
But, you know Oh, I will open with it, But I'm sure, I'm sure, I'm sure.
I'm sure one of us and I'm leaning towards myself.
But, you know, we're down to our last 25 seconds.
So with that said, I do want to say thank you everyone once again for joining us on full press radio and, of course, SportsCastr alive where you can watch us.
Ah, we will be back tomorrow morning at 8 a.
To break down this game and everything that comes with it.
Ah, stay tuned right now.
