it wasn't pretty.
Who is anything but pretty.
But ladies and Jonah Pats Nation A win is a win, and our New England Patriots have now improved to nine and one after they went down to Philadelphia and scored a victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.
17 to nothing, and I can't confirm this, but rumor has it that the Patriots had more fun than the Eagles today.
No, guys, this really was a must win for the Patriots.
Okay, the Ravens beat the tax ins.
Actually, the Ravens smoked the taxes and the whole Lamar Jackson versus Shawn Watson.
HeIp really didn't live up to it, and the Patriots needed to win to keep control of the A F C.
The Patriots control their own destiny before the game, and they still control their own destiny.
Now there's a lot to cover before you know it's a lot to cover in.
This game is a lot to talk about, so let's get started.
Dear Pats Nation.
What's going on? It's your boy, Ray, and welcome to my little show here on D p n on a day that our Patriots win, and before I do my breakdown let me ask you, how do we feel improving to nine and one? Oh, yeah.
All right, guys, let's get this started.
So let's look at a whole bunch of different things.
I want to talk with you.
And the first thing I want to talk about is we finally got to see Nick Eel, Harry the Patriots first round draft pick, make his NFL debut.
And to tell you the honest truth, it kind of went exactly the way I thought it was going to go.
I talked about it a couple weeks ago when I said that I think we need to lower our expectations on the keel.
Harry, I think a lot of Patriot fans thought he was gonna come out and he was gonna have, like, a 10 catch game for 100 yards.
And he was gonna be this big threat in the red zone and, well, he ended up today with three catches on 18 yards, and I think it would have been unfair to expect any more from him.
He missed a lot of the preseason.
He missed a lot of training camp in injury.
He missed the 1st 9 weeks of the season where he wasn't out in the field, building chemistry with Brady and the rest of the offensive line.
But he came in today and he had his moments, and I think the biggest key moment that came for Harry was catching that passed from Brady.
I think it was in the fourth quarter when Brady was in trouble and kind of avoided the sack.
Have to get rid of the ball and Brady catching that ball or Nicky Lahiri catching that ball.
That's a big step towards building trust with Brady.
When Brady knows that he can use him as an outlet, we might see him be more willing to go to him more often.
We know that Brady wants to play Maur to the veterans on the team, but tequila, Harry making that catch.
All three catches were great, you know, pretty solid outing.
It was on the road.
It was in hostile territory.
They even used them in the no huddle, which surprised me because remember last week against the Ravens, they didn't even use Jacoby Meyers, who has been with the Patriots the whole season.
They wouldn't use them.
They hardly I think They used them once the entire game.
So it's great to see that the offensive coaching and the players have the faith in him to be out there.
He was out there on all the run plays.
He's known for his run blocking, so I think all in all, it was a solid day debut for Nikki Harry.
He's gonna get better as the season goes on and he gets more playtime.
It's unfortunate he couldn't be here since Week one to really build his way forward.
I mean, we all think back to Malcolm Mitchell when he just kept building and building and building became a really key part of Super Bowl 51 when they beat the Falcons.
But I thought he played great.
Um, you know, I think he would.
He did exactly what we expected, and it's a great outing for the kid. Now.
I want to talk about both.
The defense is on this team because I know there's a lot of Patriot fans. I've been on Twitter.
They're upset with the offense.
They can't believe that Tom Brady has all these bums to throw to Not my words, everybody else's.
I get it, guys, I get what everybody's beavers I get.
You want to see the offense do more.
But you also got to remember that, especially in a game like today, both teams, our top 10 defense is okay.
The Pats are the Pats, TV away is first overall in the entire NFL, and Philly has the ninth.
Best DV away for defense is across the NFL.
So when you get to top 10 defense is playing each other, you're going to get these kind of games.
The offense wasn't great.
I know it wasn't great and and they they left a lot of points on the You know, there are a lot of points on the field.
They missed opportunities when they have them.
But we got to give the Eagles defense some credit, too.
We can't turn around and say that.
You know, the Eagles offense played well.
The Patriots defense was just better and then turn around and just say, Well, no, but our offense is crap right? You have to give credit.
They both played.
Could they're both have to.
Both teams are top 10 defense's and they played like top 10 defense teams today in a game that was really you know, 20 Roma was talking about.
It felt like a December January kind of game.
It was windy, it was called The elements sucked.
And I thought it went really well.
Now for the Patriots defense, the first quarter was rough, and it was starting to look like it could be the Ravens game all over again, especially with the offense not helping them.
But then the defense made the adjustments.
They let up a total 252 yards on the day.
They only let up 10 points.
Guys, we can't complain.
The thing that I was the happiest about today, though, was where they they only gave up 81 yards of rushing.
You know, all I've heard for the last couple of weeks was, Look what the Buffalo Bills did.
Look what Nick Chubb did.
Look what Lamar Jackson and Ingram did to them.
The Patriots defense can't stop the run.
Their soft Well, they held him the under 81 yard.
They held him under 100 yards of rushing.
They stopped the run. I was happy.
They let up less than 200 yards of passing.
I think was 174 or something like that in total.
Basically, it was a great bounce back game for the defense.
It's exactly what we thought they were going to do.
It was exactly what they needed.
I was pumped up to see it.
I hope you were pumped up to see it.
It's just at this point, it's great that that's what it was.
The big stats where they forced the Eagles to punt the ball eight times, the Force three fumbles will.
One was technically special teams.
He recovered one of them and they ended up with five sacks.
On the day they hit Carson Wentz a whack of times they were all over him.
All in all, great game by the defense.
Now I want to take a second to talk about Sony Michelle.
But he wasn't very active today and he only had 10 total carries on the day and I think it told up to 33 yards.
But I was actually really impressed with him today because on his runs we finally saw something that we've needed Sony Michelle the show and he was actually able to break tackles today and be a little bit elusive and get around defenders.
And I think if he would have been a position to carry the ball a few more times, he would have actually had a pretty decent game.
Now, I'm not saying that he had some breakout, outstanding game today, but it was really positive going forward because what have we talked about basically since we too, Sony, Michelle is making bad decisions? Sony Michelle can't break a tackle.
He's not elusive.
I've heard bringing Damian Harris let Rex Burkhead round more.
Let's just make James White and every day down running back.
Given that the Patriots only ran the ball with the running backs 20 times today, I think that 10 rushes for 33 yards is good.
That's averaging, obviously 3.
3 rushes per yard.
Our per carry, which I know doesn't sound great.
But we all know how weak his Patriots offensive line has been.
But everything every yard that Sony Michelle picked up today he created on his own and I hope that he's starting to turn the corner and he's gonna start playing a little bit of smarter football when he's running the ball now I think one of the reasons he lost out on opportunities to was because he wasn't being effective in the passing game, and it's something I still want him to work on.
He dropped Ah, bad passed by Brady that could have actually been intercepted.
It bounced right out of his chest.
I think the only way Stony Michelle's game keeps improving is if he could be active and effective in the passing game.
If he's not able to build any moment, um, in the passing game, I just fear that he's going to start regressing as a running back.
Ah, the way the Patriots play, the way their system is set up.
Yeah, last year, there were a hard running team, but again, no Dwayne Allen.
No Rob Gronkowski know James Devlin.
He's gonna have to ingrain himself in the offense on all aspects.
That includes catching the ball.
But at least as a runner, we finally saw him breaking tackles.
We finally saw him earning yards that the the offensive line wasn't giving him.
There was a couple of plays where he had some bigger runs that I thought he was dead behind the line of scrimmage and he was able to get himself forward.
So I thought was a really positive game for Sony.
I wasn't sure when to talk about this, but I'll talk about this now.
Let's talk about the Julian Edelman touchdown pass to Philip Door sat, which was obviously, it had to be the play off the game.
Gotta tip your hat that Josh McDaniels has been taking a ton of heat from Patriot fans this year.
I loved the play call. In that moment.
They needed something special.
It's really funny because right before Tony Romo said, You have to do something unique.
Something need here, something special, something different and different wise.
It was a perfect pass, was perfectly executed by Brady, perfectly executed by Adelman, a great catch by door set.
And it was the obvious game changer, not just because it was the game winning interception, not just because it was the only touchdown pass thrown, but basically the Patriots were in a situation where they were about to settle for another field goal and I talked about it when they were growing up.
When I was doing my life play by play on SportsCastr.
I said this can't be a three pointer.
This has to be at least six points.
They have to score the touchdown and beautiful play called Beautiful Execution Play the game.
I absolutely loved it.
I absolutely loved that.
We went three for three on field goals today and one for one are on.
Ah, extra points like we're not even thinking of the kicking game right now, which is spectacular.
We haven't had to see folks.
They're full are we have to see him kick long balls yet, but I don't know.
I like it. I like it a lot.
I guess if we're gonna talk about all the positives, we have to talk about the negatives and some of the negatives that the Patriots red zone deficiencies.
It's obviously becoming a problem.
I don't know what the answer is like I said.
The Patriots left way too many points on the board, and some of them was just poor execution by the team.
Edelman dropped what was a sure touchdown pass in the second quarter.
Just he jumped up, grabbed it, dropped it a ball that he'll catch 10 out of 10 times.
Brady made a couple of poor passes.
He should have been picked off right before Adelman dropped that ball.
But for the most part, nobody could get open and the offensive line gave Brady no time and meet him.
Shift in the pocket.
You kept wanting to go to James White, but by the time you could get around the pocket that was collapsing it on him, James White was covered.
It caused a big problem for Brady.
I know people are talking about the receivers will re sign Antonio Brown.
Antonio Brown wouldn't help right now.
Look at Muhammad Seenu.
Two catches for four yards today.
He just and it wasn't him not being able to get separation it.
What was Brady not being able to get the ball to him on time? Some of that is on Brady, and some of that is on the offensive line.
Brady didn't have the greatest games today, so I'm so sick of people putting everything on the offensive line.
Yeah, the offensive line is a problem, but Brady made a couple of bad decisions today, but on top of that, it's it's a lot of it is the old line and I think once I say it winds come back, We'll win, comes back.
It's gonna balance things out.
Um Mohammed Sunu.
They need to be the targets in the end zone.
I think the Patriots need to keep running off stack formations and pick plays.
They need to keep getting themselves open and creating those things.
They don't have a Gronkowski toe throw a fade route to they don't have, You know, those kind of big guys.
I know people want to see me kill Harry more in the red zone, but he's still learning different.
You know, parts of this Patriots offense.
We don't know how healthy Mohammed Sunu is.
We know we went down with a bit of an ankle injury, came right back out after a minute, all taped up.
But you know who knows what it was.
He did a pretty decent job of returning punts today, but when it comes to the red zone man, they need to figure something out.
The constant pressure was awful on again.
Isaiah Win can hopefully do it open and they need to find a way to get that ball that James White, which Brady has been able to basically because of the poor offensive line work.
If they can figure out a couple of those deficiencies and Isaiah Win could make the impact that we expect him to make, we could e.
I expect that we should see the Patriots red zone get a little bit more efficient, I think one of the biggest takeaways from this game low and the one that I'm going to celebrate the most that today was the last day that we had toe watch Marshall Newhouse protecting Tom Brady's blindside.
He had another abysmal game.
He was a liability again.
He put Brady and bad situations where he was taking hits he shouldn't have taken.
The sack was on Marshall Newhouse.
All the pressure was coming in on the left side when they would run the ball on the left side.
It was for a loss.
Marshall Newhouse, on a run play would block nobody.
He couldn't find an assignment.
He was too slow.
He was too weak.
He was to everything else.
But next week, when the Patriots take on the Dallas Cowboys, Tom Brady will have Isaiah win covering his blind side, and I expect that's gonna turn the whole thing around.
I agree with what? A lot of people are saying that the offensive line feels like they need to do more than there really supposed to, because of how much they don't trust Isaiah.
Are Marshall Newhouse.
The right side of the line must have all the pressure in the world to try to keep that pocket clean because they know the pressure is gonna come to the left.
If they allow pressure to the right, then there's no pocket.
Nowhere for Brady to escape.
Brady was again under constant pressure of a constant over and over and over again, and a lot of it came from that left side.
Thank God it's over.
Isaiah wins, gonna come in.
It's going to stabilize things.
And I'll be really interested to see how, while this Patriots offense can play with a real offensive line when they play the Cowboys next week now, I had a tough time picking the players of the game.
I always pick two players of the game.
My 1st 1 I have to give to the punter Jake Bailey.
I mean, Bailey had an absolute great game and he helped the Patriots defense by giving the Eagles really nothing toe work with almost the entire game.
He had the punt the ball eight times today.
So you know you can rack up the totals when you have eight points.
I think you had 387 total net yards of punting the average 47.
6 yards per kick, but he penned the Eagles within the 20 yard line six times today.
Six out of eight punts pinned them within the 20 yard line.
He had them backed up twice.
He had Carson Wentz taking the snap from his own end zone.
Even on the two minute drill.
He had them inside the 10 Jahre inside the 15 yard line.
The penalty knocked him inside the five, but he had them inside the 15 yard line.
Jake Bailey gave the Patriots every opportunity to win this game, and I've never picked in my entire life of talking about a Patriots win.
I've never picked the punter as player of the game, but he is one of my players of the game, and my second player of the game is Danny Shelton.
So I need to make a point to that.
This is the first game of the year that either a linebacker or a corner or I guess you saw a secondary player has not been one of the players of the game.
But Danny Shelton, to me, was the player of the game.
He was a menace today.
He made Phillies life absolutely miserable by the way he was playing.
He was all over the running backs.
He disrupted the offensive line.
He was all over Carson Wentz.
I mean, the turnaround that he's had since last year, when he was really a waste of space.
I couldn't I didn't think the page.
I couldn't believe it When the Patriots re signed him.
I said, It's on Lee because there's nobody else available, but he lost the weight, put the work in.
He's had a great season overall, but he's one of the biggest reasons the Patriots held the Eagles toe under 100 yards of rushing.
He's one of the reasons that the Patriots scored some points, finished the game with seven tackles, one sack a forced fumble again.
He was opening holes for the linebackers.
He was clogging things he was making Winston come to comfortable on a couple of plays.
Danny Shelton was all over when's and he was able to make the throw because when is a good quarterback and was able to make the play.
Danny Shelton played absolutely, positively phenomenal, and I applaud him for that.
You guys, that's my postgame ****ysis.
