the following takes place between 8 a.m.
Good morning, everybody.
And welcome to a special edition of full press covered radial.
I've I am in England, and I am joined, as always by Mr Mike Debate.
Mike, how are we doing this very morning? No, no, no.
Despite the unpleasantries last evening, uh, it was definitely an interesting, interesting night, but, uh, waking up with some confidence as we talked about before we went on the air today.
So that all in all, I'm doing pretty well here for a Monday morning.
Hey, look, I can't complain, and we're excited because I've been kind of alluding to this, you know, since we started the show a couple weeks ago that we were also going to try and simulcast this on SportsCastr.
So we are doing that.
And like, it was last night when we did the Patriots previous show.
You are not on camera, so I still don't think people actually think you're really like I think they think I just made you up.
Like it's a compilation of eighties movie sound bites and godfather clothes.
Well, it is actually on Lee sound bites.
I'm actually I'm more like family.
Carmine, That intelligent computer that we just got rid of so much like, Carmine.
You'll probably be kicking me to the curb very soon when I like.
The usefulness is running scores.
You're far too cheap to, uh, get rid of self.
You're finding your financially viable in my eyes.
So, uh, so don't worry.
Your job is safe.
Look, Hey, it's Monday morning.
So we what we like to do on Monday morning to tell you what we learned and kind of really have What happened on you during the week nine.
This case of the NFL, I'd rather just skip over.
The NFL was just going to talk about sports today.
I don't think anything big happened this weekend.
No pacers lost. Speak up.
I know you don't care.
I think we look at it as a only one team has ever won 16 games in a season.
It eventually they were gonna lose.
And this, You know what I was I was horribly wrong.
I think the game, uh, that I thought the Patriots were going to handle except I did not anticipate the ravens getting off to such a fast start.
And really, that's what ultimately did this Patriots team in.
So I guess also to you, Mike, I want to get your first initial impressions.
We're gonna start with obviously, Sunday Night Football last night, and then we'll talk about honesty, the rest again because there was a lot of interesting action that happened.
A lot of intriguing results, to say the least.
And we're gonna touch on those for sure.
But what was your initial impressions of the first of Reagan's? Because, of course they won.
The game was give them full credit.
They were fantastic.
Mark Jackson was awesome.
They had the right game plan to beat the Patriots.
So first, what? What were your thoughts on the Ravens? And then, of course, your positive outlook on the Patriots? Absolutely.
And first of all, impressive win for the Ravens, and nobody wants to take anything away from that.
I'm not going to sit here and start saying, Oh, the Patriots just beat themselves.
The Ravens weren't even that good or anything.
It really would be it.
You know, I was lying and everybody else there would be a CZ.
Well, the Ravens air for real.
Look, Lamar Jackson had a phenomenal really, for Ingram ran well.
The tight end set that they're using is very problematic for this Patriots defense.
And they did a great job.
They set the tone early Look, even easiest thing in the world for young team, especially a team with a young water back to do is to come into a Bill Belichick coach defense and add that wide eyed, scared look.
The rhythms opened up with a crisp 75 yard. Dr.
Jackson went four for 4 41 yards, and then the New England Patriots did shoot themselves in the foot at times, folks, and that cannot be denied.
The Baltimore Ravens played a very good game, deserved to win.
But they I think the national narrative is getting a little carried away year with how dominant the Ravens were and how they embarrassed the New England Patriots.
I don't believe that's the case.
I believe that Baltimore played a very good game, deserve the wind.
But if you want to talk about embarrassment, the New England Patriots embarrass themselves more than the Baltimore Ravens embarrassed them last night.
It started off uncharacteristic mistake lining up for the neutral zone infraction for Shelly Quake Calhoun build out check.
Living was really a neutral zone infraction.
If he doesn't actually cross into the neutral zone, I just I'm not a rules expert, but, you know, Yeah, no, I I agree.
And that was an And there are a lot of people that do believe that the Ravens were gifted Four points on that.
I happen to agree with it, but whatever.
I'm not gonna criticize the officials gonna be positive today.
We're gonna look at what? What the Patriots could do better but uncharacteristic mistakes.
To even put themselves in a position like that.
And, you know, Bill Belichick.
Was I right about the call? And I think he had a right to be Jackson.
He did what he needed to do and got, you know, his team involved.
The Patriots started to settle down, and when they started to move to man coverage and played to their strength and it was a completely different ball game, the Patriots were dominant.
At that point on both sides of the ball, they were able to move it.
Tom Brady was starting to read the off of the defense of by the Baltimore Ravens, which was vastly improved from what we have seen weeks with them.
Theoden, Shin of getting Jimmy Smith back are all Thomas Malone is in place.
A Milon Humphrey was always in place.
That's a very formidable secondary that the Ravens are putting out there, but the Patriots were able to move the ball.
They found a rhythm and, unfortunately, just a terrible, terrible, You know, people by Julian Edelman.
Just a complete momentum killer.
And that turned the tide in the game.
And the Patriots were never able to recover from that.
That just, I think that really broke their back.
And look, there are no they're not to bigger fans of Julian Edelman than myself thinking and blend in folks.
You know, it's tough for us to get on him a little bit about that, especially the fact that he's playing with such bruised ribs. It's not even funny.
Yeah, but, you know, it's You have to call it for what it was.
And that was a moment, um, shift and the Patriots just couldn't recover from that and credit the Ravens.
They swung the momentum they took it back.
Patriots committed a lot of unnecessary calls.
The hands to the face on McCord.
He was absolutely ridiculous and dumb.
Very, very stupid.
That was Jason McCourty had a kind of rough game.
Uh, I'm not saying overall, but, like he, he popped up in a couple instances where you don't want to pop up in terms of allowing a big play.
And then, of course, like you said the hands to the face, which that's just sloppy family, no matter how you look at it.
So, you know, credit the Ravens for that.
But everybody that's ready to write the Patriots epitaph on this one.
I would tread lightly on that because I don't believe this team is dead and buried.
I don't believe that this is the exposing game that proves that the Patriots dynasty is done.
Just when you think they're out, they'll pull you back in and then they get a game.
Now, in two weeks, they have two weeks to prepare for the Eagles.
I look for them to come out and plug a lot of these holes, and they will get some guys back as well.
Oh, absolutely, and and look, I and this is an an excited during the game.
And, you know, especially when Brady through the pick that, you know, that's That's all the ammunition people are gonna need to sit there.
And Tom Brady, who I think played a fantastic game yesterday.
Obviously, the PIC wasn't good, but I mean, at that point, you know, it was inconsequential and it really at the time, it didn't meet much, except for obviously losing some points on the board.
But at that point, the Patriots were already, uh, grasping at straws, trying to get rid of that game, get back into the game because that was also after the atom and fumble, which, like you said it was.
That was it was devastating because the Patriots started to take control of that game both offensively, more specifically offensively, but also defensively.
They started to adjust to what the ratings were doing.
Like you said, they got out of the zone coverage that they started the game with and got back to man.
It didn't work every time.
No, the Patriots were a little bit of sloppy.
They hurt themselves with penalties, but at the end of the day.
I look at this as the Baltimore Ravens had two weeks to prepare through their 1st 15 players.
Generally, look, teams have played scripted.
They have a plan when they first go into it.
They looked like, Yeah, just all world like unstoppable offense through the 1st 15 plays.
Well, the Patriots adjusted.
The rations weren't able to keep up with that and some uncharacteristic mistakes.
And this Patriots team, it's very likely going into 1/2 either tied.
Getting the ball back in this case, they were still done, forgot the ball back, started to move the ball, and then that Edelmann fumble returned for a touchdown.
That was that was pretty much all few road, and at that point it was.
It was too tough.
Thio get back into that because it did.
It gave, um, not only did it give the patriotsoffense trouble, obviously it took a points off the boards to them, but I gave the ratings defense extra rest.
They were able to kind of re coop and they just were never able to kind of keep that momentum.
And unfortunately, look, it ends up as a loss of Ravens won the November 3rd Super Bowl and good for them and a You know, all the people that are you know, saying this was for the Patriots.
Uh, well, you'll be sorely disappointed.
Kind of everywhere.
Yeah, I do believe that.
And, you know, again, we talk about teams making mental mistakes and you don't see the Patriots make a lot of that.
I think this was a needed game for the Patriots.
Get smacked in the mouth.
Let's not sugarcoat it.
And I'm not saying that you were I don't believe you were, but this is more of like a generalized you.
What's not, You know, Sugar coat it.
They got they got hit pretty hard.
I mean, this this Ravens team came in ready.
They came and confident.
You heard Nick Voil chirping all week.
We all kind of laughed and snickered and said, Hey, you know what? These guys don't learn their lesson, you know? They just write checks that their bodies can't cash.
Well, the Baltimore Ravens catched it last night. Credit to them.
However, I think the Patriots picked up awful lot last night and saw times where they could not only hang with this team, but also shut them down.
And I look for a much, much different matchup.
If these two teams face each other in the playoffs because most likely on well, barring any unforeseen cir***stances now we're talking about a very difficult stretch of the schedule for the New England Patriots.
But if that happens and it's in fact Loro, I think there's a different result.
I don't think that this Ravens team is a team that the Patriots cannot be.
And that's the thing, too.
This is a situation where I take a lot of positives out of this.
Not only when I wake up this morning and I see all the uh uh um, obviously the ridiculous narratives coming out of this game, you know, just just look at the Knick rights timeline.
I know I bring him up a lot on this show and, you know, maybe maybe you watch every once in a while, but, uh, he's public enemy, and I don't want to say Public enemy number one because that actually kind of give some validity to what he says he's not.
He's just example a of when I speak about people that overreact and create these false narratives.
You know his impression of last night's game was Tom Brady is Time is winding down and it's Lamar Jackson's time.
Okay, well, first of all, yes.
Lamar Jackson was great last night.
I'm not taking anything away from him.
But if you came out of that game with the impression that Tom Brady was isn't as good as he he has been, then you're not watching the same game because I came out of that game saying, You know what? This is the best I've felt about that offense in a long time, at least in the last few weeks.
In terms of what they dio Mohammed Sunu looks like he's gonna be a fantastic fit.
And that was one thing I didn't get it right in.
The prison production was I thought that they were going to be seen you a lot more get him more involved, and they surely did.
And it got to the point where you know he was.
He was making plays on plays that were starting to break down, which is a great sign because it's showing that there's some chemistry already between you and Brady, and he kind of just being a smart football player has a better idea of where to go when I play start to break down.
So I was very happy to see that, obviously, Julian Adam and again the fumble was terrible.
We're not going to stay here and blame Adam and into all this because of what he's playing through and how well he's played.
Outside of that, another big play was the drop from Ben Watson.
That was, and this and this is a situation where I think the first time I'm like Man, I really like, of course, in its bronc.
I mean everyone Mrs from.
And I think you know Cris Collinsworth even set it on the broadcast.
That's a play that, you know, that's money for drunk, that little seam route.
Throw the ball down in a way you know where only the receiver can catch it.
You know that's a better growing specialty, and Brady threw a perfect ball perfect ball, and it is, you know Ben wants and hold onto it.
And, you know, look, we're not sitting there saying old better walks and lost the game.
It's like, No, it's it's one of the many occurrences that happen.
And, ah, I believe very next play that the interception.
Which again, I think there was.
I just spoke about Seenu and Brady's communication and how it's been improving, but they clearly weren't on the same page on that last play.
And I think, Ah, a little bit of frustration took over on the Brady, you know, at the time that was as good as of as a punch because of where they were if they didn't cover, even get that first down.
They were kind of no man's land anyways, and it would have been a tough, um, fourth and long convergent if they were gonna attendant it.
So again, I depict stings.
You know, whatever.
It's not a big deal is really at the time.
There is far more other impactful plays that kind of decided how that game was gonna turn out.
And, you know, look, at the end of the day, I'm gonna go see Christine, you know, and I'm happy about that.
Um, from a coaching standpoint, obviously it's nice to know that you have in your back pocket a first round of wide receiver ready to play assuming out of the bi.
I think this was more or less Get your feet wet for tequila.
And then, you know, everyone's anticipating.
I stay away and coming back and yeah, you know, you gotta, you know, kind of walk on eggshells with Isaiah Win.
Because is he going to stay healthy? I don't who knows? But if he's out there, that changes things so much for this office.
And look, I hate trying.
I hate harping on Marshall Newhouse, because again, I feel like he's gonna put in an impossible position, given his limitations, like he's not a starting left tackle in this week.
Certainly not one that's needs to protect.
You know, a guy like Tom Brady.
He's just not that so, Yeah, you know, I don't want to sit here and say, Oh, he sucks.
He's just you know, Look, he's he's hanging in there, and it's frustrating the watch, because again he got bullied around a little bit, especially early on yesterday.
And, uh, I say no one's gonna help that he's gonna He's gonna bring a lot more continuity to that line because all of a sudden you start get him a little bit more solemn playing the left.
You have Jack Mason back markets.
Cannon needs to step up this play.
It's clear he hasn't played as well as he has over the last couple of years.
And then all of a sudden, these guys like new House and friends.
All these guys become of gaff players and rotational players, and all of a sudden that that looks a lot better from on optics and obviously a place standpoint.
So, you know, I'm not too worried about this team.
They have two weeks.
I feel bad for the Eagles, to be honest with you.
Because, you know, deep down, of course, yeah, sure, Bill Belichick doesn't wanna win or doesn't want to lose.
But I have two weeks coming off a game like this.
Very coachable, like this is.
This is like a perfect opportunity for Bill Belichick to coach this team between the silly mistakes that they made some of the issues they have stopping the run, and again it gives give us the patriotsoffense two more weeks to to gel more and get it.
Harry involved more and new involved more so I have a very positive outlook on this Monday.
Yeah, I do as well.
And I think that the way the Patriots are going to be able to attack the second half of the season now is to count on some of the guys that they're getting back.
And I'm glad you made that point about new House because New House is absolutely getting drilled today with with, you know, scorn and ridicule.
And look, I mean, there's no question about it.
It's a problem, folks.
Nobody's on me and I am not sugarcoating that it's a problem.
Ah, the is being manhandled out there.
And when your job is to protect a 42 year old quarterback and that is the life blood of your offense, it's a It's a good thing it really is.
And you have to be ableto take care of that and be able to do your job.
No pun intended.
I say a wind coming back will help that he is a guy that can definitely do that job.
I know the Patriots were so high on him coming out of training camp and thinking that they found this guy that's gonna make everybody forget about Trent Brown, and they know that there he's gonna be able to do the job.
Obviously, his health is a concern.
You have to make sure that he stays healthy.
But if he does and he comes back and he's ready to go, that's gonna be a huge addition to this team.
McKeel Harry is the other one that's coming back.
Obviously, he will add a dimension to this offense that we haven't seen yet.
He gives you that big target very similar to what Josh Gordon skill set was.
And I'm not comparing the two in terms of skill level because obviously, Gordon as several years on Harry.
But don't be a bit surprised to see him make some plays that make you shake your head and go, Wow, I didn't realize how good how athletic this kid was made a few of those during training camp and everybody that was there kind of went to and on.
They couldn't believe it.
This kid does have the ability to make some of those plays, so he's gonna be a huge addition to this team as well.
But ultimately, the Patriots just have to shore up.
They have to figure out something when it comes to this run defense.
They've been Gash now two games in a row, very badly.
They were gassed in the game against Buffalo.
That was the first time that we saw maybe a little bit of, Ah, a weakness in the New England Patriots defense.
When Frank Goren all over them as well, they need to be able to shore that up.
If on the Patriots.
The one thing that's surprising me today and then I'm looking at and I'm making have a question mark on is their ability, the speed and the linebacking corps to be able to handle these are p o these run pass option offenses.
To me, that's a little bit of a concern.
If you're a Patriots fan, look for Bill Belichick in the New England Patriots.
Steve Electric, Gerard Mayo.
They're gonna look at this squad and they're gonna dip a kind of devised ways to be able to get around that, because to me, that's the only thing.
I think that they don't really have an answer for right now, and that could be a problem down the line.
And we weren't talking about the linebackers being an issue in this defense at all.
Prior to last night, but I think we saw a little bit of an issue there.
That's something they're gonna have to fix.
Yeah, and that's what That's a great point because if there was any point in time in that game where they looked thoroughly outmatched, it was during those are posing again.
That's something you can't run all the time.
So at least the Patriots know that.
You know, teams can't just rely entirely on that.
But when you know, the Ravens were breaking it out and you know they were doing an incredible job.
Some of the face there was one, and I can't remember exactly which play it was.
But I got fooled.
I thought I thought they handed the ball off and it looks like I I want I want to say maybe Jamie Collins collapsed on on the running back.
Then all of a sudden, the Marjah Jackson just boots out, right? Just like pull it.
Usually at least you can You can kind of tell like Oh, yeah, that was a fake.
You know, obviously it's a hard, harder for the guys on the field with all you know, all the bodies in the way.
But for us on TV, usually you can kind of be like, Oh, yeah, that's a really nice day.
I got completely fooled.
I was like, All right, what? Wait, What? Coastal marsh gas and food.
Enough for another 10 yards.
So again, it was It was one of those humble high games where you come in and, you know, you get served a nightly tradition and the Patriots certainly got that and little for two weeks when you have two weeks off.
The best thing for Bill Della tracking this coaching staff is that have a lot of things to teach.
And, um, that they certainly d'oh especially again if you want to shore up that defense and not buy it.
And that's one thing to we know this team does not buy into their own height, you know, to the point where it's gonna become a distraction to the point where it's gonna be the Cleveland Browns.
We'll get too down in a minute.
They were very levelheaded.
They know out of the way today.
You know, when it went to get to, you know, not to get too high and not to get too low.
And this is a situation where again, I think that Bill is gonna have a lot to teach over the course of the next two weeks.
And, uh, you know, what kind of bad for the Eagles? Who? Uh, we'll begin the Patriots out of the Bible.
Yeah, Andi, no question about it.
And the Eagles? Now you know they're gonna look at this game coming in.
I mean, there's there's no short of, I guess, bravado in Philadelphia.
They'll come in.
They'll come in chirping.
That's the nature of the way the Philadelphia Eagles play football.
But when you traditionally look at the Patriots coming off of a loss coming off of a buy, you looked at how angry Bill Belichick left in his post game press conference last night.
There is no question about it.
You gave us a few great sound bites thing.
Cameras caught, caught a few of them, and I obviously I don't want to say I'm on this program because we were trying to be family friendly.
I mean, to an extent.
But, you know, dropping F bombs and all that, we're probably going to avoid on the show.
But you go ahead and find the cliffs.
I'm sure it'll all over.
So for me here Oh, yeah, definitely.
And the television broadcast picked up a few of them last night.
You know, they picked up a few. Not audio.
A couple of you you can read lips.
The Patriots radio broadcast did pick up one.
Yeah, that was by the microphone near their sideline with the show production.
I think Marco Bello had mentioned last night.
So definitely, Yeah, go back and take a look at the sound bites.
Take a listen to some of the sound bites.
But all in all, the way the Patriots need to go about doing business is they need to scheme.
They need to devise some the protection that they can provide in this run game on the defense.
And I think that's really their biggest issue right now.
Doing that and finding a way to kind of counter act this this r p o with ah lot of the linebacker speed that they just last night they just didn't have.
And that's not something you could manufacture.
So you have to coach around that.
It'll be interesting to see how the Patriots are gonna be able to do it.
Yeah, that's right.
Another week in the books.
And it feels great, baby.
So All right, so we're gonna move off this game a little bit, because I'm sure waken obviously talk, you know, the entire hour on the pages.
But fortunately, there was something that also, it doesn't warrant a little bit extra time spent.
And when the Patriots lose, it's the biggest event in the world.
I mean, look, and that's part of the reasons why I woke up this morning feeling pretty good because no other team that has really, you know, a bad quarter and 1/2 and loses one game and nearly 12 months.
Fan gets as much hate and celebration out of Thea and I fans of that team than the Patriots.
People ate the Patriots and, you know, everyone overreacts and doesn't same thing every year.
Oh, this is it. This is it.
There, over there. Done.
And then, you know, the defense carriage pretty in February is what the people say.
So enjoy it. I love it.
It sucks that we have to wait two weeks to see the Patriots play.
But at the same time, I'm excited to see how this team reaction response when it comes out of the bye week and have a couple extra pieces released one extra with the same went waiting in the wings for the Cowboys game.
So like way generally tell you what we learned and you know, you know, there's a lot of action on Sunday, and the one thing I learned is that there's not a single team in this league is invulnerable.
And by that I mean exactly what I said.
The 40 Niners, They just like the Patriots, got a little bit exposed on defense.
They their weaknesses, showed a little bit, Uh, obviously giving up 25 points in a victory.
Nonetheless, in victory to the Cardinals, the Green Bay Packers absolutely garbage on both sides of the ball.
I mean, I don't care about the late touchdown pass in yardage from the back of top 49 yards passing through the first half.
That's that's awful.
The Seahawks are really good, but their defense is incredibly suspect.
And yes, I understand they went up against Tampa Bay, but, um you know, you let up 34 points.
You know, this isn't the first time to let some points this season, so that's certainly something that you know, something that's concerning moving for, especially when you play some of these high powered offenses.
So, to me, one of things I learned, it's just that there's I still think the Patriots are.
It's not the best team in the NFL.
At the very least, there's still the best singing.
They have City, and there's There's really a lot of pretty good teams that have some very big, fatal flaws.
Yeah, without question.
And I think we saw a lot of those guests.
You know, yesterday's games, the Packers being one of them.
I mean, there's no question about it.
They did not look good.
And, look, a lot of people were saying this was gonna be set for a bash for the Green Bay Packers.
There again, Davante Adams back.
This was gonna be even Maura and the Packers.
We're gonna light up the Los Angeles Dodgers credit to my charger's boy.
I'll tell you, they absolutely you know, when I they took care of business, I predicted, I hit I picked the Chargers.
I'm on camera here yesterday saying it.
So just stone it out there I was the voice of reason and nobody no bias.
And I was like that.
But if they're on your schedule, folks, that's gonna be a tough game, every single game that you play this team.
So keep a sharp eye on the Raiders because they can really play spoiler.
And in the process, they could make some noise coming forward as we head into the second half of the season.
Yeah, I'm glad you brought up the radio because I also I also picked them the wind yesterday.
So I was on a roll, if you want to.
Just the year last year, Jon Gruden and Mike Mayock all this stuff like, what are they doing? All of a sudden, they have a really solid team that, you know, maybe their biggest issue was quarterback.
Maybe there's some other issues on this team, but they're able to get over Um, losing guys like Pontus Perfect.
Obviously not having Antonio Brown at all the regular season s Oh, it's very impressive what this team is done.
And, you know, maybe if the Chiefs have lost yesterday.
We might be talking about them sneaking into that F C West race.
But there's still a chance for him.
Yeah, there definitely is.
I think this I think this team has the ability to be able to do it, overtake the Chiefs for the F C West.
Well, I think that's a little bit of a lofty goal at this point.
It's still think the Chiefs are going to win that division fairly easily.
But I would not sleep on this team for a wild card position because I do believe that they're showing ah lot of heart and they're showing a lot of metal.
And those are two things that I don't think a lot of people expected from the Oakland Raiders earlier this year here, especially with the internal Brown fiasco.
It just looked like everything was trending toward a disastrous season in Oakland.
And I remember us talking to Terrence earlier on in the season and he's like, Well, looks like I'm gonna be doing a lot of draft profile here and you know, that's not really the case and there's a lot of talent on this club and you're seeing it.
And, you know, maybe Gruden is not the, You know, if maybe Gruden has pushed some right buttons here in Oakland and gotten, you know, the most out of this team.
So they're an exciting team to watch.
And one that I'm gonna be watching very closely in the second half of the season and watching them with an objective eye because the Patriots don't get a chance to play the Raiders this year.
So I'm looking forward to watching them and seeing what they could do to some of the teams that will be the Patriots primary competition.
Moving forward? Yeah, and, uh, one of the teams.
