Hello Lakers Nation.
Trevor Lane here senior writer for lakers nation dot com.
Today we're breaking down.
Lakers versus Clippers.
I've got three takeaways.
Well, okay, I may have stretched the rules a little bit.
It's more like three and 1/2 takeaways from Lakers versus Clippers.
Something's too weak to be aware of moving forward and some things that we can take being absorbed from this game or learn from it anyway.
Yes, but first, before we dive into it, quick, shout out to our sponsors up time, energy drinks.
So energy should feel fine.

Okay, so Lakers versus Clippers didn't go the way the Lakers wanted it to 102 to 1 12 Clippers come out on top.
Clippers taken out the Lakers.
It was a tough game.
Lakers started out great look phenomenal, doing everything they needed to do, winning the game in the paint and then when the Clippers switched in Lou Williams and Montrose.
The whole game shifted, and suddenly the Clippers were in command for pretty much the rest of the way.
The Lakers did has some nice runs, especially the one led by Danny Green, who is absolutely huge.
We're gonna talk more about him.
But the first big takeaway, the Lakers.
I've been saying this since the summer.
They need another wing defender.
Uh, and to piggyback on that contagious Caldwell Pope cannot defend Kawai. Leonard.
Shocker, right? Who would have thought that? Can TVs couple Pope.
It's 65 Wouldn't be able to defend Kawai, Leonard.
And yet here we are with the Lakers were forced to put K C p on Kawai.
Well, not force.
It was a choice, but still they weren't left with very many options.
So the Lakers Right now the only true small forward they have on the roster is LeBron James.
Now, in the future, you can say maybe Kyle Kuzma can slide over and do that.
We saw him play pretty well on the perimeter when he was with Team USA before the injury.
Clearly something you'd be working on.
But how long is it going to take for him to get his legs under him? Is he going to be able to defend guys out there on the perimeter like that? He's been spending a lot of minutes for most of his career so far at the four, the Lakers need somebody that can slide in at the three and be something of a stopper at six foot five, that's not contagious. Caldwell Pope.
So I've been advocating going after Andre Iguodala, but we don't know if the Memphis Grizzlies, you're gonna buy him out.
And if that does happen, will he choose the Lakers? What we've heard is that he's choosing between the Lakers and the Clippers, so we don't know what's gonna happen.
They're just yet.
Yes, you can ask Danny Green to slide down a little bit.
Maybe that's a non option.
They did put him on quiet for certain stretches, and that's something that worked a little bit better.
But ultimately, I do think they are.
What lacking one wing defender is that something they can rectify as the season goes on.
Perhaps it will be interesting to see what they do if it's a problem that becomes big enough for them to actually go get somebody or if they're able to, just kind of, you know, Band Aid the issue and fix it on the fly.
Maybe it's something they can scheme around, especially once they get back.
But as of right now, looking at the roster and looking at the way they were defending Kawai Leonard, it looks like they're missing one player.
And that's a player who can defend your super talented wings.
Um, second thing that I want to get into LeBron James and Anthony Davis. No, look.
After the game, we went live.
Okay, we did our postgame show.
We had a lot of people that were complaining about LeBron James, and he looks like he's lost a step.
Ah, he's washed all of this stuff.
No, he didn't have the most efficient performance ever.
LeBron James on the night.
Seven of 19 shooting? Not great. No question.
They're not a great shooting night, but nine boards.
Eight assists a steel ah block, including a chase down block, which is pretty solid for for a guy his age to be getting chased down blocks five turnovers on the night.
That wasn't great.
There were moments where he looked his age.
There's no question, but this is a guy that can still be effective.
Still be efficient, particularly with the passing game.
LeBron James didn't get a whole lot opportunity truly show off his passing because the Clippers were doing such a good job on the defensive end.
There weren't a lot of openings, and quite frankly, the Lakers weren't doing what they needed to do in order to open up the passes for LeBron James.
There was also a lot of forcing the ball into Anthony Davis.
Speaking of 80 Anthony Davis, Tremendous.
I think this duel, LeBron and Andy can still be really good, okay or is going to be very good.
I think they can be devastating.
I think they can be the best duo in the league.
No, it didn't get them the wind tonight against the Clippers.
But you look at what Anthony Davis did 18 21 shooting, Not great for a guy who did a lot of his damage in the paint right, but and nine of 14 for the line.
The shot wasn't following tonight and that's on issue that we saw during preseason, but the fact that he got to the free throw line 14 times, it's pretty impressive.
Okay, he was doing what he could to just explode over people and try to finish, and he did a nice job of that.
10 boards, five assists, two blocks and a steel to go along with 25 points.
Solid performance from Anthony Davis overall again? No, it didn't get the Lakers the wind, but as a new team that just being thrown together, you expect there to be some little chemistry issues here and there.
I still think the LeBron James Anthony Davis pick and roll is going to be held for other teams to deal with, so keep an eye on that.
Watch it. This is just Game one.
Okay, the sky isn't falling just yet.
It takes time to build pay.
It takes time for them to build chemistry together.
I think there's a D and LeBron James pairing did enough enough good things that I think they can be very, very special moving forward, especially once they really start to click.
Just It was a tough matchup against a Clippers team that did really well t their credit, taking the Lakers out of what they wanted to do.
Lastly, the Lakers need their role players to step up.
Danny Green did.
Danny Green was tremendous, and this was one of Mikey's.
Going into the game was that the Lakers needed the role players to play big, and they needed to dominate in the paint.
They didn't do either.
Of those two things.
Danny Green was tremendous.
10 of 14 shooting, seven of nine from 3 28 points.
Heck of a night from him, That's it.
And nobody else outside of LeBron James and Anthony Davis really had what I would consider a good night. Quinn Cook.
Two of seven shooting.
Dwight Howard one of three was six boards.
JaVale McGee two rebounds on the night, two of three shooting.
Two blocks are centers.
The Lakers centers were pretty much non existent.
We didn't see them make a huge difference in there to the point where they're actually more of a detriment than anything else, and that should be an advantage.
That should have been the big advantage for the Lakers going into this game.
They had the size in the paint and they weren't able to capitalize on that at all.
In fact, on the night the Lakers finished with 41 rebounds total, the Clippers finished with 45.
That should not happen when the Clippers are such a small team.
The Clippers even had 11 offensive boards to nine for the Lakers.
The Lakers needed to dominate in the paint, and they did not do that.
So you've got this combination of no one aside from Danny Green, really stepping up among the role players and especially damaging was the fact that they didn't control the paint.
That's their big advantage over a lot of teams night in and night out.
Going to be the paint.
When you've got Anthony Davis, you've got Javale McGee.
You've got Dwight Howard.
You've got some big bodies in there.
They've got to make sure they're dominating the paint.
And they were not doing that against a team whose weaknesses in the paint The Clippers are very good on the perimeter, weaker in the paint weaker at the rim, and the Lakers were not able to take advantage of that.
So that's something that needs some fine tuning.
No, the sky isn't falling again.
All is not lost, but it needs some fine tuning here.
They need to make sure that they go back and they capture what they had to the very beginning of the game where they were using that bully ball they were attacking and attacking the rim and doing what they're supposed to do.
They need to beat up teams at the rim in order to find success on most nights.
And by the way, let me let me finish with this.
If you take that Lakers performance that we saw against the Clippers and you played 90% of the rest of the league, the Lakers will be walking away with the wind.
They just happen to be playing the one team that was able to scheme around it and come away with the victory.
In fact, the Clippers shot tremendously, shot 52% on the night and 36% from three again.
That was a big key was stopping the Clippers from from scoring efficiently, and the Lakers weren't able to do that.
They had a hot shooting night so again that I'm not disappointed with this performance.
Overall, I think that if you took this exact performance and you played just about anybody else.
The Lakers probably walk away with the w okay, so I think that's that's a positive heading into Friday's big matchup with the Utah Jazz.
All right, guys, thanks so much for watching.
