00:00:11
Hello Lakers Nation, Trevor Lane here, senior writer for the Lakers nation dot com.
00:00:16
And it is finally here, the regular season Lakers versus Clippers were gonna kick things off today.
00:00:22
I'm gonna explain what needs to happen for your Los Angeles Lakers to get a win over the Clippers on opening at night.
00:00:29
I can picture it.
00:00:30
It's gonna be amazing if the Lakers can beat the Clippers on opening night, get the year off to a good start.
00:00:35
LeBron James and Anthony Davis reign supreme over the Clippers.
00:00:40
Guy should be great.
00:00:41
Now let's we're gonna get into it.
00:00:42
Everything that we need to focus on while we see the Lakers take on the Clippers first.
00:00:47
Quick shout out to our sponsor up time.

00:01:06
All right, so the keys to victory.
00:01:08
Three things that the Lakers need to do in order to beat the Clippers.
00:01:13
Defend the three point line.
00:01:16
We saw the Lakers struggle with this a little bit in pre seasoning.
00:01:18
It's the Brooklyn Nets They got lit up from deep, actually liked what they did in the first quarter of Game two against the Nets in China.
00:01:27
I thought the starters did a pretty nice job closing out on three point shooters, but things kind of fell apart.
00:01:32
The Nets destroyed the Lakers from deep.
00:01:34
That's a big concern because the Clippers are a good three point shooting team.
00:01:39
Don't buy their preseason stats.
00:01:41
You don't have the regular roster playing for much of it.
00:01:45
The Clippers ranked 37th.
00:01:47
That's right, 37 because they include all these foreign teams that come in 37th in three point percentage of preseason.
00:01:53
That is not going to last.
00:01:54
Last season, the Clippers were the second best three point shooting team in the league by percentage and hit a 39% average.
00:02:03
That's ridiculous.
00:02:04
This is a very, very good three point shooting team.
00:02:07
You look at their their lineup.
00:02:08
Patrick Beverley is hit 40% from deep over his last two seasons.
00:02:12
Landry Sham it 42% from deep quiet, 137% from deep to Michael Green, 40% Lou Williams hits 36%.
00:02:19
The and Louise does on tough shots, too.
00:02:22
These guys can light you up from behind the arc.
00:02:25
This is where they're going to really hurt you.
00:02:27
So that means it's gonna be really important for the Lakers to recognize all the switches.
00:02:32
Recognize any type of rotation that they need to make.
00:02:35
Get out there, get a hand up.
00:02:37
The Clippers don't have a ton of finishers at the basket.
00:02:40
Yes, you've got to beat those U boats down there.
00:02:41
Who could do some things? Yes, you've got Mantra is Harold.
00:02:44
But other than quite, Leonard, you don't have a lot of guys that are gonna kill you off of the drive or anything like that.
00:02:49
So the Lakers need to be ultra aggressive closing out of the three point line, challenging shots without fouling.
00:02:55
That's gonna be important.
00:02:56
Gotta watch Landry.
00:02:58
Doc Rivers likes to run a lot of the same place that he ran for J.
00:03:03
Reddick Just tosses Landry Landry sham it in the same situation and shame it.
00:03:06
When he was actually with the Clippers last season, which was only about 27 games or so, he actually shot 45% from deep in Doc's system.
00:03:16
So he's absolutely a guy to keep an eye on that guy.
00:03:18
The Lakers will need to watch.
00:03:20
We're talking guys like Danny Green.
00:03:23
You're gonna have to keep a close eye on these perimeter shooters for the Clippers.
00:03:26
Because if they're gonna burn you, it's gonna be from behind the arc.
00:03:29
So extremely important that the Lakers defense is locked in on closing out on that three point line, chased them off the line, make them make some difficult mid range shots or funnel them towards the basket, where you're gonna have the long arms of Anthony Davis, JaVale McGee and Dwight Howard waiting for them.
00:03:47
2nd 1 thing the Lakers need to dio embrace bully ball.
00:03:52
You look at this matchup.
00:03:53
Where do the Lakers have the advantage? It's in the paint.
00:03:56
Yes, the Clippers can shoot from outside.
00:03:58
Yes, the Clippers have some solid perimeter defenders quiet being arguably the best perimeter defender in the league.
00:04:03
But the Lakers have the advantage in the inside of the zoo box.
00:04:08
I, like do it like zoo during his time with the Lakers.
00:04:10
He's good, I think. Javale McGee's better.
00:04:13
Anthony Davis clearly better.
00:04:16
Okay, Dwight Howard has that physicality inside as well.
00:04:19
Montrose Harrell, great player for the Clippers, has a lot of energy, but I don't know they can keep up with the Lakers on the defensive end Now.
00:04:26
What the Lakers you're going to need to do is the same thing we saw them do in preseason against the Warriors, where they treat the Clippers like the little brother in the paint.
00:04:35
They have to bully them.
00:04:36
They have to knock them around.
00:04:37
They have to be a force on the offensive boards, and this Clippers team will let you do that.
00:04:42
In fact, the Clippers were 28 in the league last season in giving up offensive rebounds to give up a lot of them.
00:04:48
Now we can't speak too much because the Lakers actually gave up.
00:04:51
We're 27th in the league and giving up offensive boards last season, but we suspect that's going to change quite a bit with Anthony Davis out there with the Lakers, plus another rebounding minded big in Dwight Howard.
00:05:03
That should shift quite a bit for the Lakers this season.
00:05:06
But against these Clippers, take advantage of the offensive glass.
00:05:09
Take all of the extra possessions you're going to get and then make sure that you are scoring baskets off those offensive opportunities, dominate the boards, protect the rim, be that bigger, stronger, more physical presence.
00:05:22
Because we know that's the advantage that the Lakers have on both ends of the floor.
00:05:26
It's in the paint.
00:05:27
The Lakers have got to get the ball down low and really punish the Clippers because they can be a fairly small team there.
00:05:33
They're probably gonna start to Michael Green up there at the four.
00:05:37
Lakers need to take full advantage of that and punish the Clippers for being these smaller squads.
00:05:42
So again, on the Lakers side of things, play bully, bully ball, smash mouth basketball, get in there and grind out the wind that way.
00:05:50
Yes, it's also gonna free up your three point shooters Maur.
00:05:53
If you're hurting the Clippers in the in the paint, that's where you're going to see guys like Danny Green pop Open.
00:05:58
Avery Bradley, Queen Cook All the shooters that they landed this summer Third, then last thing.
00:06:04
Nothing about the stats here forgetting the stats for a minute.
00:06:07
I'm gonna steal a phrase from Jared Dudley.
00:06:09
Be a star in your role.
00:06:11
Let me tell you, Anthony Davis, he's showing up.
00:06:15
He's showing up.
00:06:16
You can count on those guys having solid performances, these Air star players.
00:06:20
They're gonna be there for you each and every night.
00:06:23
What the Lakers were gonna need is the other guy's.
00:06:26
The other guys to step up, embrace the moment.
00:06:28
There's gonna be a ton of eyes on this game.
00:06:31
Everybody's watching, especially with no Zion Williamson now in the Pelicans game earlier in the day.
00:06:37
This is the matchup that everyone is waiting for.
00:06:40
Lakers versus Clippers.
00:06:42
And it's important that the role players on the Lakers do not shrink in the spotlight that they come a big I'm talking about guys like Bradley like Danny Green, Dwight Howard, County v ous Caldwell, Pope, Jared, Dudley, Quinn Cook.
00:06:55
All of these guys have to be big, and by that I mean they need to excel in their roles.
00:07:02
Let LeBron and Anthony Davis.
00:07:03
Do the heavy lifting.
00:07:05
Do what they're brought in to do.
00:07:06
If you're Quinn Cook, that means making threes and occasionally operating out of the pick and roll.
00:07:10
If you're Dwight Howard, it means rebounding, blocking shots, finishing put bags at the room, sitting in the dunker position and getting a little drop off passes.
00:07:17
If you are Jared Dudley means just being a smart defender, spacing the floor the right way.
00:07:23
Keeping everybody in sync out there continues. Caldwell. Pope.
00:07:26
Knock down some shots for us.
00:07:28
Knock down some shots for the Lakers.
00:07:29
Hit it from outside.
00:07:30
Do everything you can on the defensive end.
00:07:32
All of these guys have specific rules at their end.
00:07:35
And that's one thing that I think is gonna be a strength for the Lakers this season.
00:07:39
Everyone knows what their job is, but they're gonna have to do that job well against the Clippers, going to be key that these role players step up and give Anthony Davis and LeBron James the support that they're gonna need against a Clippers team that should present a really, really strong challenge.
00:07:54
It's gonna be exciting night.
00:07:56
I am beyond thrilled that here we are.
