Joining me today is Greg Berman from ESPN.

Greg, thanks so much for hopping on.
And I got to say, I asked you kind of last minute.
You want to hop on here and join me and you were all for it.
So certainly appreciate that.
Yeah, well, thanks for having me on a trip, right? I'm just happy to be here.
My girl is watching Handmaid's Tale.
So it was either talk to you about the Lakers or watch Handmaid's Tale and I chose the former.
I think you made the right choice there.
Yeah, so let's talk a little bit about what's going on with with the Lakers right now and everything that's been going on in the world of news.
So we've been talking about this this program that we use called Re Stream.
The blast is out everywhere.
I never changed the title on it, so we're still talking about Lakers dominating the Warriors.
Game five in the in the title of the clip that we've got going out right now, you're listening to the podcast version of this.
You're probably listening to it on Friday.
I'm no clue what we're talking about, but that's okay.
You can find us on Twitter.
Find the video version on periscope.
They're confined its own Facebook live as well.
But some Lakers news that came out today.
Some interesting stuff, particularly with Julius Randle, and I am a resident of Randall Island.
People know that I was a big fan of Julius Randle.
I was a little bit disappointed when the Lakers decided to part ways with him and Randall apparently, and gave an interview today where you talked about how he doesn't care too much about playing the Pelicans again.
He doesn't feel any sort of way about that.
He's got he's got love for them.
But for the Lakers, he still isn't too pleased.
What do you think about that? The way the Randall situation broke down on the fact that this guy is still carrying around some kind of feelings for the Lakers, well, I mean, I understand why he feels the way he did about Look, he went from L.
A to New Orleans.
He's not gonna feel bad about New Orleans.
He used New Orleans the ways that he wanted to.
He got his big deal with New York because of how he played in New Orleans and how he played in his last year with the Lakers.
I mean, you're leaving the Lakers.
You are supposed to be the star.
You were one of the big you know, the big players that were here in l A.
And you got pushed away essentially because they wanted to save money to get LeBron James.
And it all worked out that way.
I get it. It's fine.
I mean, you're gonna You were drafted by the Lakers.
You were supposed to be here forever.
And everybody in l.
A still loves you, including you.
So you know, So you're not alone in that? And he would been perfect alongside LeBron last year, but that those things don't work out the way they do.
You're not looking at the team that you're looking at right now, so I'm not upset about it.
I understood why the Lakers didn't bring him back.
It was gonna cost them way too much money.
And he got his big payday.
So I don't know why he's upset and he's in the number one market now.
Bad with the New York Knicks? Yeah.
I mean, bad team.
They're not gonna go anywhere.
Maybe 20 wins, 22? Possibly.
But besides that, I that I don't understand, you know, he's he's in a better place.
He's in a better place now.
Yeah, I mean, look, he's in a great spot for his career.
This is a place where he can blow up his numbers.
He has pretty much the guy.
And it Well, actually, not the guy that the Knicks have about a 1,000,000 power forwards on their roster at this point, But he's clearly the best of them.
I think he's the guy they're.
But still, the fact that you've got this kind of sentiment from Randall, where he's not pleased with the way things broke down with the Lakers.
Are we going to see the same thing from Alonzo and Ingram and Josh Heart like, are we going to see that? Is that going to be a consistent theme where these young Lakers were kind of coming at them every time they play the purple and gold.
I think there it depends on the guy.
Um, Alonzo, I think, is different.
He seems like a guy that is just He's like, Look, I didn't play up to my number two ranking.
I was number two traffic.
I didn't play up to it, and I think he's gonna be the same way.
He's just he's kind of playing the game the right way.
If you ever heard somehow has a chance to come back to the Lakers, I think he would jump at it.
Whereas Ingram and Heart Heart's already making it known that he wasn't happy with the way things went down in L.
So yes, they're gonna hate it.
But think about it.
You're any time you would give up Lonzo Ingram and heart for Anthony Davis.
So they can't be upset.
Like at least they got traded for a superstar.
It took all of them to make a superstar in l. A.
So but yes to your original point, they're gonna be upset.
Except for Alonso.
I don't think Alonso is going to play one way higher or lower, depending on it.
Yet Lonzo is pretty even keeled, just just in general.
Just as a person, you don't see a lot of highs and lows from him.
He's very just kind of flat with a lot of things.
And so, yeah, I agree.
I don't think you're going to see.
Although I guess Brandon Ingram isn't super emotional, either.
Unless you're Chris Paul, they need special.
Then he's gonna get a little bit fired up.
Andi made throw some hands at you.
Yeah, the whole thing.
With this, it's hopefully it doesn't become like a recurring theme.
I hate stuff like that where you have this animosity, holding over and lingering have learned not to interrupt you, But, I mean, I like you.
What's wrong with that? I'd like that.
There's teams trying to play their best against the Lakers.
That's what's happening.
I you know, a lot of times we get upset with players because they're too nice to the rest of the league. I like that.
There's rivalries that air brewing if there's an actual rivalry between not New Orleans, obviously, but New Orleans in the Lakers, because young guys that moved over there are now going to play their best in Slater's parades.
I'm all I'm all for that type of that type of thing.
So please make Maur enemies in the league make Maur rivalries.
I want to see more people actually like playing their best all the time.
You want to see less of the buddy buddy thing and more of the guys going at each other less of the Hey, let's team up more of the hay.
I wanna beat you that type of thing.
All right, Fair enough.
Yeah, I absolutely get that can fully understand it.
I feel like so many teams already get up to play the Lakers, but whatever.
Hey, bring it on it.
So it always makes for a fun time, You know, the drama and all that kind of stuff.
One guy that we're not gonna be getting drama from now.
Good. Because he's retired.
Not that he was gonna get a strong anyway, But Lowell Day, Lou Well, Daniel retires.
And let me tell you, Greg, I got immediately immediately Questions.
Does this mean he's a no? Unfortunately, I built the next four years.
Yeah, he is gonna be We're gonna be talking about him long past. Now that he's retired.
We'll continue talking about him for years now because he's still in the Lakers books because they waved him and they stretched his salary.
So unfortunately, yeah, Lakers aren't getting out of that contract, although by stretching his salary, they did free up some cap space, let them do some other things.
Bring in some of the players that they brought in last season.
Other news coming out today.
Kyle Kuzma Lakers picked up his option for the next year.
I know you wanted to take out 3.
It was It was a big surprise, right that they would want to do that.
Cosmo responded on Twitter, saying he made a comment was pretty funny with something like, I'm rich now or something like that. 3.5 million.
Look, Guzman, obviously this is a great value deal.
Uh, what should we expect out of him? We've got two more years of Kyle Cruise, but on a very cost controlled contract.
So what do we see out of him this season and next season? Well, this season is gonna be depend how he comes back from the injury.
If he comes back and he's Kyle Kuzma.
I mean, I have high hopes for him.
He is supposed to be the guy that's gonna be the number three scorer for the steam.
It's LeBron and Anthony Davis won a one B and then right behind him.
Koosman is supposed to be the next guy.
He's supposed to be the Lamar Odom type guy that's coming off the bench being the six man roll, that whole thing playing games at the end of games.
Maybe not starting but playing at the end.
So he's supposed to have big numbers.
He's supposed to be a shooter.
He's been working with Lethal Shooter all summer long.
It seems like a shot has been changed.
What if maybe it goes back to what it was, as in his rookie season, opposed the last year when he dropped, you know, 56% points, whatever it happened to be, but I'm expecting a lot out of it, but it really depends.
This year depends on how he comes out from his injury.
I think there's enough other guys on this team now that can kind of hide.
That's where if he is just the shooter on the second team, then he'll succeed.
But I think next year is where you're really going to see the full Kyle Kuzma and maybe even after the All Star break this year, when he's really got his legs underneath him and he's ready to go.
I expect big things from him and so really be like I said the third start, that's what has work.
That's what I've been wondering about with this.
This injury fight, this stress reaction.
How much has this taken him off his feet to the point where his endurance is gonna be shot to the point where he's not gonna have the legs on him like that? Takes a while to establish when when you don't when you're not able to put in that really high level work for a long time, your I mean your muscles react in a different way and it takes time to build that back up.
It's not something that just happens overnight.
That's why I think people who are hoping that he's gonna play Tuesday night, I think they're gonna be disappointed.
I don't think that's gonna happen, that is, it's not there.
He's not even contacted practice just yet.
But like you're saying, maybe maybe by right around the All Star break by then he's really back up to full speed.
So this this national team duty that he that he went to playing with Team U. S A.
That set him back quite a bit here because now he's been unable to play at a level that we'd expect for last few months.
And so now it's gonna take time during the regular season for him to get there.
And and we've seen this happen with players before, where they're hurt going into camp, and it just it takes time to get ramped up. Think long, snowball.
Last season, a similar situation.
It took a few months for him to really start playing out at his very best again.
So who's MMA? I'm still really interested to see what he can provide.
It feels like this Lakers team right now, based on what we've seen in preseason, is missing that kind of long, lanky perimeter slash interior defender, that kind of jack of all trades that Koosman can be, So I think he can be the missing piece for them, and I'm hoping they get him out there sooner rather than later.
But I've got a bunch of questions piling up.
You're already asking us.
Wins Cruz my coming back.
I don't think it's happening on Tuesday night.
Yeah, I mean, he he could be out just as long as you know Paul George is Paul.
George boasted about 10 games. We will know.
It really could.
He's like you said in practice, but in noncontact practice, when it comes to wear what he was doing with Team USA, I was happy.
I was fine with him going to Team USA.
He's never gonna get that chance again.
That's not the guy that is going to be a, you know, on Team USC to USA or the Olympics.
So for him to go there and learn under pop and play with some of these other guys, I was fine with it.
I think it worked out well.
Who knows if he would have gotten that exact same injury practicing what the Lakers and you don't know? It's It's a freak injuries, just things that kind of happened, so I'm happy that he got that training from Pop and was looking good in there to shooting the ball.
Really, really well.
But like you're saying when he comes when he's coming back, I have no idea.
It could be he possibly could play on Tuesday, apparently.
But it's not gonna happen in my mind.
So I don't expect him to be back until at least, you know, five games into the season, maybe longer and not even ready and being full Kyle Kuzma until January.
Yeah, it's definitely gonna take a little while for him to get there when he does.
Based on what we saw out a Team USA, what do you think the Fitz gonna be like for him? I'm envisioning him as kind of 1/6 man type role.
In fact, we've got a few comments on your asking about about whether or not he can be kind of in that six Man of the year race.
I think you can be.
I don't see him in the starting lineup.
I just don't think the fit is there.
But I'm really intrigued by what he can bring coming off the bench.
What are your thoughts on that? Yeah, I agree with you.
I just don't see where he fits.
I think you're just too big when you if you have cock, who's miss starting? It's just it's too tall already have JaVale.
It's gonna start word Dwight letting on what you believe, I think. JaVale.
But then 80 starting LeBron starting.
And then if you go with you, if you go with Kuzma, then you have four guys that are 68 in the both, and that's just way too tall.
And then you're gonna and you have to start Danny Green because he's your best perimeter defender.
Plus what your best three point shooter.
So the way they had it, what the starting lineup that they had last night against the Warriors? That was the best starting five for me, and I think that who's coming off the bench and finishing games like people always love to talk about who's starting, who's starting? I think the more important thing is who's finishing and I can absolutely see because my finishing some of these games, maybe in place of McKee and A D, moves down into that five roll or that play a little bit smaller, whatever it happens to be.
But having guys like Avery Bradley and Danny Green being able to chase around some of the smaller guards.
I think that's more important than starting Kuzma in the early in the early season.
Yeah, I agree 100%.
This is This is the type of thing where you need to look at what's best for the team as as a unit, and I think that you're hit the nail on the head.
The the lineup that we saw against the Warriors the other night.
Where was Avery Bradley? Danny Green? LeBron a D JaVale McGee.
I think that's it.
I think that was the dress rehearsal for the Lakers.
We've already heard that A.
D and LeBron are gonna be out for that final preseason game tomorrow night and that there's gonna be some other guys that we could be finding out about tomorrow that are gonna be listed, is out as well.
So I think the previous preseason game was it.
That was the dress rehearsal that was let's get ready to go play on Tuesday night and then after that it's all rested and maintenance and everything, so I think that is going to be the starting lineup, and I agree with that 100%.
Avery Bradley and Danny Green on paper, that's a tremendous perimeter defensive duo on the inside.
You stake Anthony Davis and JaVale McGee side by side, two guys with seven foot six inch Wings fans.
Trying to shoot over, that is hell.
I mean, that's that's difficult for any any team to deal with.
So I like the defensive potential of that starting unit.
The one question that this whole thing throws out here, though, is then what happens with Let's assume that Cosmo gets that bench role.
What happens with Rajon Rondo, a guy who we saw in the starting lineup and we've seen coming off the bench as well.
They arrested him in the previous game.
What kind of a role does he take on because we know he's pretty polarizing? There's actually a lot of Lakers fans that are behind him, but it seems like most of the basketball community isn't too high on Hon Rondo.
At this point, I mean, Rajan Rondo is one of those guys that if you look actually go deep into his numbers and really look, he's not the guy that he was 567 years ago in 12 4011.
Whatever it was when he was first team all defensive player and playing great basketball with Celtics, That's not who you're seeing anymore.
He's a totally different guy now.
So the people that are they love the name Raj on Rondo more than they love the player.
If you actually look at how Rondeau plays with this team, he makes the team worse.
I don't hate to say it in that way, but when he's on the floor, their defense suffers when he's on the floor, even their offense, while he likes toe, push the pace, it suffers as well because he's, you know, he's stopped hunting.
He's looking for those assists.
He's trying to find the fancy assist.
No, I just I just don't believe that he's he's gonna get his minutes.
He is a leader on this team.
He is going to be a coach one day, whether it's an assistant coach or whatever it happens to be, somebody will take him on and he'll be a good He's very cerebral player that understands the game very well, and that's why guys like LeBron and 80 like him so much because they know how to find them and nowhere to be in those situations.
But he'll get his minutes.
I just don't think he's gonna have that starting role.
He's gonna be on that second unit.
Maybe there's games, hopefully, that he's only playing, you know, 10 15 minutes in that game.
But for the most part, I wouldn't be surprised seeing him in place of Avery Bradley at times in the starting starting lineup because he wants to be there and he thinks people belongs there and they need to kind of a piece in a little bit, whether that's right or wrong.
You can tell me whether you how you feel about it, but I just feel like this team is going to appease him.
At some points, I wonder if it is it.
Appease Rondo or raise it.
Appease Anthony Davis because we know A D is a big fan of Rondo.
He's part of the you know, he was a guy that he wanted with the Lakers.
Hey, if I'm gonna be in L.
A. I want Brando back.
He's good friends with Rondo from their time with the pelicans.
It was Rondo and E.
D on DeMarcus cousins.
Those were the guys that 80 really want to play with.
So I wonder how much of a factor that that is, considering how much the Lakers have already integrated Davis into their decision making process.
I mean, look, that could be something that comes into play here that continues to feed.
We're under minutes because Anthony Davis likes playing with him because he knows he can get him the ball in the right spots right? Right now, Anthony Davis is the most important player on this team by far.
No matter what, you give him what he wants because he's a free agent at the end of the year, he could just walk away.
I don't think he's going to.
I think he loves L.
A. I think he loves this city.
I love you think he likes the team the team built around in a lot of the guys with two year contracts and not just he's one year contracts that they were playing with this last year.
I think he likes playing with LeBron who is still here for a couple more years.
I don't think he's going anywhere.
But if you do something to upset him, it's going to go.
It's gonna backfire on you, and he'll and he'll end up just walking, which I don't which would be a disaster for everything that you got rid of all the young guys for Anthony Davis.
If he walks away disaster again, I don't think that's gonna happen.
But if he wants Rondeau playing with him, you will see Rondeau playing with right.
Yeah, yeah, you have to give a D what he wants in order to get him to stick around.
You notice he has not committed in any way.
He is every opportunity to address the issue.
He has said I want to focus on this season.
He has not said I'm going to stick around, which may not even really mean that much may not get rid of the question at all.
I mean, look, Kyrie said, what a year ago that he was staying in Boston.
Clearly that didn't happen.
So even if he if he just comes out and says, Hey, I'm staying with the Lakers next number, I don't think that stops the questions from continuing to be asked of him.
Think that? Still a topic that's gonna come up So I get why he would go the way he's gone, right? But still, it's gotta make Lakers fans a little bit nervous when you gave up everything.
All the a 1,000,000,000 draft picks.
Plus you gave up Lonzo and Ingram and Josh Hart, and you don't know 100% that you're gonna have this guy sticking around next summer.
So, yeah, you have to do whatever you need to do in order to keep him happy.
And, of course, that's probably part of his strategy, as well as to make sure that he keeps that power and that he doesn't just relinquish that on a whim here in the summer that he continues to put that pressure on the organization to do what they need to d'oh to build a championship team.
Yeah, I mean, he's 26 years old and he's a top five player in the league and he's not going and you do what you need to do to get him.
And by the way, you're talking about how they got the mortgage, their future, yes, but I don't know if you call it borders their future for Anthony Davis because he is the future.
But yeah, trading way. All the young guys.
The the longest tenured player on the Lakers right now is Kyle Kuzma.
Yeah, he's in his third year.
If you would have traded to Zuma.
Also, LeBron James is your longest tenured Laker.
That's how bad that's what's happened here.
LeBron James came in, Everybody gone.
And now you have Cosmo James A.
And that's your core.
That's what you're building around, and everybody else is just there to feed them.
So whatever 80 ones 80 gets and he as long as you bring him back next year, that's all that matters.
If you could bring back Anthony Davis, then then you're good and that's what it really comes down to.
I do want to talk a little bit about Quinn Cook, but first we need to tube chat real quick about Mac Weldon, who is one of our sponsors for today's show.
They believe in smart design, premium fabrics and simple shopping.
The shopping experience of Mac Walden was super easy.
I went on there, Look, my first reaction when I when I went shopping for Mac Weldon was to text my wife and say, Hey, can you look on here and tell me what looks good? Because I am terrible at shopping for myself.
I just am, I'm not good at.
I never know when things match.
I went on there and before she could even get to it, I went, Never mind.
I got it and I figured it all out because it's so well laid out, so easy to put things together and figure it all out, even for me, who I am.
