That's what I do.
Also CBS Sports H Q and bed online dot a GI We'll talk all about those in just a little bit if you're joining us Live on Sportscaster for the live stream of this show.
We're gonna be talking about all kinds of things.
Joining me today is ESPN.
Alan, Slava Alan, How's everything going, man? Draft things were good, buddy, like you said, good to have the season underway even today, just kind of browsing around.
You got other preseason games going on, so it's good to get the NBA.
Feels like it's getting back in full swing.
Hey, you know, I won't admit to mention that there's just something I was gonna bring up a little later in the show.
I know that from seeing your tweets and everything, you were watching the pelicans in the Hawks a little bit earlier today.
Does it? Does it get you at all when you're watching Lonzo when you're watching Brandon Ingram when you're watching the guy Josh Hart in another uniform, does that? Does it bother you or can you just kind of separate yourself? Just just cheer for them.
So it was weird, definitely weird seeing them on there.
And I think, Look, it's like I want to see those individuals do well, but you're also thinking in your head like all right, you don't want to see you Well, because obviously there were former Lakers and you made a trade.
But not to be, to be honest, Alonso and B I you know, how can you not be a fan of theirs If your Laker fan and what I mean by that is these were two guys have got a lot of promise.
They got a lot of potential in the n b A.
They didn't ask to be traded. They were traded.
You know, it's not like they wanted to leave the Los Angeles Lakers just circumstances where the way they were.
But definitely, I think there's gonna be some intriguing this season, kind of following how some of those players are doing.
Yeah, and you know what I got.
So I've been getting a little bit of flak on Twitter.
Every time I mentioned a guy who's a former Laker, I get Lakers fans a lot of them saying no, you know, we want to keep updated on one's own things, But a lot of people also saying Let it go, let these guys go there, not Lakers anymore.
We don't need to talk about it and I don't feel that way.
I feel like we should be able to talk about these guys.
We should be able to discuss guys that aren't Lakers anymore because we have a vested interest in their careers and we want to see these guys do well and succeed.
I want to see Lonzo ball do well.
I want to see him.
His potential. I want to see Brandon Ingram play well.
Josh Hart play well.
I want to see them blow up for a you know, a ton of points and assists and all of that unless they're playing the Lakers.
I hope they're terrible when they play the Lakers, but otherwise I want to see these guys successful, and I feel like I feel like we should be allowed to do that while the beauty is this.
The Lakers didn't you know, just get some chunk in the trade.
They got who they get, somebody they got.
Somebody is gonna be M v P candidate this season, and we all know why the Lakers made the trade.
You know where they were.
And to be honest with you mentally, even when I was watching some of the Falcons game Mike Man, it's kind of nice not to have so many young kids.
You know, that red rebuilding process is such a long process, and the Lakers skipped so many steps by grabbing anti Davis and, you know, 26 years old for him walking into his prime.
Um, I know, and I know we saw just a little bit of what the potential is gonna be.
I don't spend a lot of time talking about a D.
But, man, I'm sick of rebuilding.
I'm sick of six years of not making the playoffs.
I'm sick of waiting for every young kids you know eventually flourish.
I'm sick of watching prospects and not proven commodities, and that's really what a lot of these young players have been for the Lakers.
I think I saw something yesterday. Zvi Mukai.
Look, it's some type of buzzer beater and a practice game they had with the Pistons and a couple people tweeted about.
It's like You know what we're gonna do That's gonna happen.
And there's plenty of Lakers we saw with Dan's little Russell.
Yeah, we've seen it with Julius Randle.
We'll see it more now.
Alonzo, FBI and Josh Heart some of these other players.
That left Lakers, but personally, I'm good.
I see a team of veterans on this Laker squad.
I see Auntie Davis on this Lakers team.
Not the Lakers have a legitimate chance compete for a championship to trade.
They have to make? Yeah, absolutely.
I don't think it's not like I don't want this to be the sentiment out there that Oh, we want to see these guys do poorly so that it looks like the Lakers won the trade.
I don't I don't feel like we should root for someone else to have a a down career or anything like that, just so we can say, Oh, look with the Lakers got her.
You know what? There's gonna be those fans out there.
There's gonna be people around the league because people love to hate on the Lakers saying saying, Oh, man, Lonzo ball, Aren't the Lakers wishing that they still had him and all that sort of shit? But no, we just watched the other day Anthony Davis go crazy and look like an M V P candidate.
I mean, come on, you got it.
Just enjoy what you've got and let's let's not worry about that side.
I do agree, Trap that.
That's gonna happen regardless, right? Like, no matter what I mean, I can't tell you how many times I've got, whether I'm doing like a post game show where I get a tweet anytime.
D'Angelo, Russell played good of the Oakland.
I think I got three or four tweets about why I'm still talking about Angela, and I think you know, the late grooves.
Could you continue to rebuild and do it organically? They could have.
That was an option for them.
But I think the option that they went with, which is really the option the Lakers have always gone with, which is really the main reason why the Lakers have had so much success over the years.
They try to get proven commodities and starts to come play for their franchise.
They build around those stars and then they compete or win MBA championships.
And that's really what they're doing with LeBron and 80.
And hopefully, this season is no different than some of the past successes.
The Lakers that Yeah, absolutely.
I mean, look, they are now.
And when in wind now mode.
And so you've got to just enjoy where they're out of this moment.
By the way, guys, if you're joining us via sportscaster and you're hopping into the chat room, thanks a lot for hopping in and I don't I noticed Greg Berman just hot.
Damn your buddy for ESPN He was also, of course, helping out hosting for for our sister site.
Dodger Blue Dodgers had a tough one tonight.
Hopefully, they can get things back on track here in, uh, in game five.
That's gonna be gosh edge of my seat.
I like I like great getting away from the Dodgers for a second.
Kind of refreshing his mind a little bit.
Not exactly the night he was looking for.
You're looking for, but no Great.
Does a great job, doctor Doctors coverage.
Yes, he absolutely does.
And speaking of coverage, Alan, before we dive fully in depth into the Lakers, let's talk a little bit about you because you've got a little bit of a new gig here.
What's that? What's the news, Alan? So basically going to be doing? You know, all 88 Lakers pre half postgame shows will still be my Lakers talk show Once a week will air tomorrow s o.
The new gig is basically that's my That's my job.
Now my job is just gonna be completely focused on Lakers basketball.
You know, it is it is 12 months out of the year when you think about the way the MBA structure.
Now we get a little bit time off, you're in there.
But this will be the first time in my career where I get to just focus on this part.
And I couldn't be more excited about it.
Like the opportunity to interact with Laker fans.
Post game, you know, after wins after losses, opportunity to the pregame show.
Michael Thompson, obviously a former Laker.
So it's, uh, it's perfect, man.
I couldn't ask for anything more.
I'm excited, especially.
I mean, look at the seasons.
Like I'm walking into a season where if if that preseason game number one is any indication of what we're gonna get this up company year, the warriors look like they're on a downward trend.
The Lakers look like they're an upward trend way great time to do it.
I'm much, much better.
You look, you always say every time you and I talk, you always say that you could talk lakers basketball all day.
Now, you really pretty much get to do that.
Yeah, Hopefully I'm not eating my words, you know, saying that.
Talk about something else.
No, I'm, uh I'm looking forward to it, and there's some great platforms out there.
I mean, travel what you do and what Lakers Nation does like.
There's such great dedication to Lakers basketball, and there's a fan base for, you know, that people want the content.
I mean, I'm sure every time you put something out, you get great numbers AIDS because of the work you guys do.
And B, it's because people want Lakers content.
So I'm happy to be covering the team as much as I will.
Absolutely, Lakers fans are the very best so, so diehard, so locked in on their team.
We absolutely love it and certainly appreciate all of them out there.
Alan, I gotta tell you.
So I'm I've been working on this video program stuff and everything and getting it all set for your image.
Size has been bouncing around, so a couple of times people have gotten extreme close ups of you.
So just just so you know, that's that's happened a few times what I want to dive into first year Owen, Greg Berman says, I need to think of positive things.
We're here to spread some positivity over to to the Dodgers world because we're gonna be talking Lakers.
Obviously, that was That was a great debut for the Lakers.
But one of things that we're doing here on the show is we've been taking people who have been hopping in our iTunes reviews or Apple podcast.
Now I should say reviews and allowing them a tossing questions for us.
So, Alan, I thought we would answer a couple of questions here through.
This is one that's come up a few times at Zo Lions to 15 said Love the show.
Constant new and fresh perspective.
Their question is, what is the update with Kyle? Who's mind? This is not the only person I've had asking this, Alan, where we at with coups at this point because they're starting to be concerned that we might not see him in time for the regular season.
It's kind of been a mystery.
It really hasn't been much conversation about who's who's mentioned on Media Day that it's not as bad as it could have been, but it's also not good to where you could just be out on the court right now before they took off to San Francisco.
So that was on Friday.
They out of practice was open to the media.
He was shooting around, but like hobbling.
You know what I mean? Like that.
Not real extension like that on your leg.
Exactly like Aunt he was actually even saying is like, I kind of said something to the effect, you know, still has a jumper as long as you could jump off two feet or one foot or whatever he was talking about.
So there's still no timetable on Koosman at this point.
And it's a fair question.
I will say that, um, after getting a chance to watch that first preseason game on Saturday, it does make you think what some of that potential is gonna be.
One Koosman is there because we can easily look at the lineup right now in state man, there's a lot of town where you got the perfect amount of that's you got the perfect amount of stars at the Lakers have because it was gonna be needed this year, so we'll have to wait and see.
I don't have any updates.
I haven't heard any updates from the Lakers will have to wait and see when he's gonna be ready.
He is making the trip to China is what it sounds like.
He is out going to China, so you'll be there for the games.
Be there to support the team, but not on the court.
Yeah, and we know that he's gonna be getting another scan when they get back from China.
So I think that's the earliest that we'll hear anything concrete about Winkle.
Cosmo Come back.
But you're right.
Look, Kyle Kuzma.
He's that guy that can that can kind of hit the nitro button for the Lakers.
That could jump them to that next level if he comes back and really plays well, because we've seen I mean, look, it's only one preseason game we've seen.
They can already be a pretty damn good team, just with what they've got.
But you add Cal Koosman Koosman that makes.
And if he really makes the jump, that's what pushes the whole team to the next level.
So I'm excited to see what he can bring.
One more question.
I want to get, too at M.
G's Raiders said, Hey, Terry, you're doing a great job. Thank you.
What do you think is a good record for us to have like the three seed or the four seed in the playoffs.
So, Alan, we've talked about how difficult the Western Conference is gonna be.
Realistically, what record do you think it's going to take to hit the three or four seed this season in the West? That that's a good question.
The amount of wins you have to have for three or four.
See, by the way, if Lakers get a three or four seat, I'm good with that.
You know, we just had a home court in the first round.
That way, you're kind of thinking to yourself that LeBron is kind of pacing himself.
You want 80 to be the man in the regular season and then come post game you want or postseason.
You want LeBron and kind of take over his his just his experience and being one of the all time greats play out alone, invaded for LeBron and just to give you some context 53 wins last season, both the three and the four seed finished with 53 wins in the West.
Last season, I was gonna say 55 I think that's high, you know, I think would you be surprised if Lakers are in that 52 52 53 range. I wouldn't be surprised.
I think that's about right.
You know, I think that as good as the last has got, you know, it's been good, but even out competitive to be this year.
It also means travel a lot of teams they're gonna beat up on each other.
So you know Denver's the Utah's.
How the pelicans won't be an easy game.
We saw a little bit of them today.
Dallas is gonna be improved.
The Rockets, that Clippers, Lakers, all these teams.
So I think there is this.
I think there's this image of the Western Conference that you have to win.
Like, for example, 53 54 55 games to be in that three or four range might not.
That might not have to happen this year trap because so many teams will be reading up on each other.
And I think teams will be more strategic because they know there's a lot of teams in the Western Conference that have two stars.
So you're not like worried about the Golden State Warriors this year that you work that you've been worried in the past just be ready for the postseason and they'll take their chances. Exactly.
That's a great point.
And you're not gonna be worrying so much about positioning.
I think this season even worry more about health.
And that's especially true for the Lakers.
I don't care if they're the four seed or the six seed or whatever see they wind up with and I care Maur that they enter the playoffs healthy.
I think that's the most important thing.
And then after that, you worry about about seeing and there's gonna be teams trav like.
If Denver can be a one seed, for example, right or a two seed, that's a big advantage for the Denver Nuggets.
Yes, that's very important to them.
If Utah if Utah's top two seeds or something along those lines, that could potentially be the difference of them winning the syriza, not winning the series.
But I think you got some vet teams out there, you know, I don't know if the Clippers are gonna worry as much about home court.
They're gonna probably in a similar position as the Lakers just saying Hey, if we're healthy and all our guys were healthy coming in, we'll take our chances.
I think teams like the Portland Trail Blazers, Houston Rockets you just might have teams out there where I will be.
You know, I support it, held the Golden State Warriors.
If they're healthy and they just get into the postseason with Clay Thompson, there's gonna be a lot of teams that don't want to face that.
Absolutely, yeah, we can't just write off the Warriors at.
At this point, a Greg threw out there and a few other people were climbing in Cosmo off the bench.
When he's back, or you put him in the starting five.
Laker fan Mike responded to him, said, He thinks you should come off the bench.
What are your thoughts? Do you Do you go with the supersized lineup with Cosmo when he comes back? Or do you bring him in as a benchmark? I love him off the bench. I really, really do.
You know, Look, I made this.
I made this argument on the show maybe a couple weeks ago, about coups, and I think there's some Laker fans that think that I'm not I'm not sold on Kyle cools Ma.
That's not the case, but of course I put LeBron in a D at unbelievably different levels than I quote Kyle Cruise, right? And I think who's? There's always this conversation of who starts from starts, which, by the way, I really actually like they're starting lineup on Saturday was right.
Avery Bradley in there.
It surprised me that Rondo came off the bench, but I like that.
It surprised me, too, but it made me smile.
I like that a lot.
If it's Avery Bradley and Danny Green kind of in the backcourt.
Two guys, that complaint defense data green that could hit it open jumper and then you go LeBron a D and JaVale McGee.
That's that's That's fantastic.
But I like who's off the bench because I think who's, um can can kind of be the guy that shines off the bench.
I think he could be one of those players that when the second unit comes in for other teams, he could be the best player on the floor.
That that's not unrealistic.
That's the talent that Kyle Kuzma has.
But the main thing I was going to say is there's a really matter who starts the game.
It really all comes down to ends the game, and I do feel like who's is gonna be a lot of circumstances where he's in the game in late game situations and I got imagine that's more important for him than just being a start. Absolutely.
That's where you're going to see Anthony Davis slide to the five to finish out games and charisma comes in to be that offensive punch there.
And look, this wouldn't be a unique thing.
We've seen players that are major impact pieces come off the bench and, heck, lookit.
Look at how good Lamar Odom was for the Lakers coming off the bench as a great example.
Amazing that Manu Ginobili.
Koosman can have a major impact without having to be a starter.
Just getting that starter label doesn't necessarily mean that you're the better player.
Anything, Sometimes that it's just it's what the team needs in order. Thio.
In order to have the right chemistry and the right pieces fitting in the right places.
That's that's the game within the game here and that's gonna be up for up to ah, Frank Global to figure all that out.
Let's stick with Avery Bradley for a minute here.
This was a guy who look, you didn't score any points, and I was still pretty impressed by what we saw from him, and I like him in that starting.
I don't know if it's takes, but I like him in that starting group.
This is, you know, this is why I like you drive.
I like, I'm just, you know, naturally, I love defense and the teams that play the best defense like it's so easy for us to talk about the Kobe Shack days and how dominant Kobe was and how dominant shack was and talked about Pau Gasol on Kobe and all that stuff.
But, you know, if you know basketball, you do understand the value of defense.
You know how important Derek Fisher Waas and Robert Horry and Rick Fox and Ron Harper and go down the list right? The all these players that had such an emphasis on defense every Bradley.
I got a chance to connect with him on Media Day eats.
He said, literally, that he was the best, best defensive guard in the via the best, not like top five.
No, he said he's the best defensive guard in the n B A.
That's what he believes now, whether that's realistic works, not so have a player where you know this year in the back court, you're gonna be playing Portland S C J.
McCollum in And Damian Lewis, you're gonna play Steph Curry.
Um, all the unbelievable guards that are in the Western Conference.
James Harden, Russell Westbrook.
We could go down that list.
You want Rondo guarding one of those guys? What do you want? Avery Bradley guarding, guys.
So that's why you know, for me, um, I love the idea of having a very badly there, like you mentioned.
I don't think it's sticks.
It actually really did surprise me.
I think there's such a respect for Rondo from the players and the coaching staff because in such a way that I feel like I feel like they're gonna have a starting games.
But maybe I'm wrong.
And maybe Rondo's completely bought it and says, No, a bee would be a better fit to see I'm in the same spot.
I feel like like Avery Bradley is such the better fit than Rondo.
I didn't like the Rondo and LeBron Minutes that we saw in the obviously.
It's a tiny sample size, just one game.
But my concern going in was Rondo off the ball.
Not so great, right? LeBron off the ball.
You're kind of wasting him if if he's off the bone, right, so I don't think you want those two guys playing together.
I can see Rondo having a job as the guy running the offense when LeBron is off the floor, and I think maybe you're OK doing that.
But asking Rondo to go spot up, I think, is a spacing nightmare.
So I'm very much in the of the opinion that you do run out like an Avery Bradley or somebody like that.
But and the only reason why I can think that you wouldn't would be if that veteran I don't know, veteran recognition comes into.
The coaches just feel like they have to give that spot over to Rondo.
Well, it's funny.
When Rondo shot Ronald, maybe took five threes, maybe end up taking more.
But I think at one point was to five.
Yeah, and I remember a couple of the threes that he took him like Mom, don't shoot that and it went in and I just kind of sat quiet.
There was like he made it.
He hit a jumper consistently.
I look at you know, by the way, I don't think you can hit a jumper consistent, and I think he knows that as well.
We know his game.
Everybody knows this game has been in the league for such a long time, but I do agree that when Rondo and LeBron or on the court at the same time, just not crazy about it.
But LeBron goes to the bench and you still want that ball.
You want the ball to move or you want the pick and roll to go.
Which, by the way, Caruso on Dwight Howard looked like they had a nice connection.
They really did.
But I'm with you on the A B stuff and I think a lot of Laker fans.
I did the postgame show and I did some stuff afterwards for YouTube.
I felt like Lake of fans were kind of similar, like Wow way would be.
Abie stays in the starting lineup.
We'll see what happens.
Yeah, I just I think the defense is important and I think that if you're asking Rondo to defend.
Like you said, You're Damian Lillard's your stuff, Curries your players of that caliber.
I think that's asking him to do too much.
And it's it's putting him in a situation that is not setting him up for success running the second unit That set him up for success because that's where his smarts can overcome any sort of decline in athleticism that we've seen from him, At least to a degree.
Where is against starters? I think he struggles on the defensive end there.
Where's Avery? Bradley is such a good defender.
I like that fit a lot.
So, yeah, that's certainly gonna be something to watch.
We know, Frank Vogel said.
He's gonna mix and match it a little bit.
He's gonna mix it up.
What do you think about tossing in, Say, Alex Caruso? Giving him a look along with those starters in the starting role goes funny.
Alex Alex is a that is such a question mark, and I think there's a lot of Laker fans that are really curious to see what Caruso's role is.
This is he didn't play the whole first half, played predominately most of the second half of that for a preseason game.
I like him off the bench to drive like I like.
I think Caruso is a guy.
He's not one dimensional.
You know he can slash to the basket you could create for others.
He's not self that she's smart.
I think sometimes kind of slows down the temple when he needs two.
You could throw Al.
You assume he's much more athletic than a lot of people think.
This is kind of the This is the beauty with second line up for the Lakers.
When we talk about it, there are guys that could shine in that second line up.
When you have a D and LeBron in that first unit, it's really tough to be the focal point of anything and not to say that he can't play a specific rule and be a guy that kind of place off those guys.
But I just need Danny Green and Avery Bradley at this point would be perfect complements to LeBron and a D.
Guys that don't meet the ball at all guys that will play defense where it seems like the Rondo's of the world, because most of the world, maybe even Alex Caruso.
They might be more effective with Balder.
And I'll say this about Crusoe Caruso, when he doesn't have the ball in his hand.
He's not a guy that just kind of sit in the corner and wait for something that happened.
He's very active, tries to cut a lot, tries to kind of be sneaky with his athleticism.
I guess you could say so.
I don't think Caruso cracks the starting lineup, but if he's in, if he's in the lineup and his contributing 20 minutes a game, what what? A jump from Crusoe two years ago.
Where you see today? Oh, absolutely, and and Alan, I have to.
You said it'd be sneaky with his athleticism a little bit, and I had to smile a little bit, because instantly my brain goes to that tip over Kevin Kevin Durant last season.
What an amazing play that was.
What about my favorites? Of course, that was Ah, amazing play, Alan.

Okay, Alan, let's not bury the lead here.
His Laker debut was I mean, phenomenal.
There was so many moments where he was out there just dunking all over everyone.
And he went, Oh, I mean, going back to that trade we talked about earlier You went.
That's why that's why you make that deal.
When you saw Anthony Davis dominated the way he was, Uh, what was your take as the game was going on? How did you feel about seeing a D out there in purple and gold and the way that he was performing? I don't want Oh no, no, no way am I trying to under value this performance? But I'll say this trap pretty much in my head is like, Yup, that's a D.
You know, if you've watched any part of Anthony Davis, and I know we're not watching games against the Pelicans all the time, and I know it's not, you know, he doesn't have these long stretches of playoff runs and he's just 26.
So it's like he's been in the league for 12 years away.
Cases um, that's how good a D is.
I mean, you wanna you wanna talk about the top five players in the N b A.
You're gonna put you on a stair.
You're gonna put LeBron there.
You're gonna put kg there that you're gonna have arguments of.
Okay, Who else is going? There's a joyless beat.
Is it? Steph Curry is Davis a d is the man.
I mean, an absolute stud.
And I even thought even what we saw him, I don't even think was like we saw all these dunks we saw with the offensive rebounds.
We saw some pick and rolls with LeBron James.
We saw him cleaning up the glass.
I don't even think that was an array of really what? What? Um, his skill set is We didn't get to see.
We saw it once against Draymond.
Read where you hit him with a pump fake and then hit that jumper.
But we're going to see him hitting 18 footers.
We're going to see him hitting threes.
We're going to see him dominate the ball down low with his back to the basket.
We're going to see him 23 block shots of games.
I think that little taste that we saw is nothing of what's going to come.
And, you know, the fact that he did that against Draymond Green, which is really one of the best defenders in the FDA, just kind of shows how difficult it's gonna be for other teams to steam around 80.
And I think we just got it just the smallest taste of what 80 is gonna be this year.
Yeah, I was gonna say the same thing we got.
We saw a D dominate just by being stronger, bigger, able to jump higher, just just with physical aggression able to dominate.
We saw him do it that way, but he's got another level on the skill side of it where he can actually put moves on people.
He can put the ball on the floor, his passing, all of these things.
He was pretty much just dominating inside, just grabbing all the offensive boards and slimy and back home, getting lobs, all that kind of stuff.
We didn't see the skilled side of eighties game just yet, so there's like that should be scared for the NBA's.
There's Maur to 80 than what we just saw and they were already that good with LeBron and he'd be playing together.
That's that's really exciting for what's to come here, drive the kids.
You know, there are so many athletes right there, so many athletes that are unbelievable.
They're they're they're raw, but their athletic, and that's how they're in the league.
80 is both, you know, it's not a he's a basketball player.
First, I would say All right, he's able to bring the ball up the floor.
He's ableto he's got a good neck capacity needs to You said he was dominating download A lot of what he was doing.
Download was also, you know, his tendency and his understanding of the game, knowing where the ball is gonna come off the rim.
Just this feel for the game, right? He is a basketball player first, and he's also a freak athlete that happens to be seven foot, and that happens to be, you know, this thing, number one pick out of Kentucky and everything else that you want to put out there.
So I agree that there's so much more to come.
Look, I've said this and I don't see it just kind of hype it up for Laker fans.
There's gonna be Knights, Trev, where you're doing your show and or in the morning you're talking with other other coworkers at Lakers Nation and you're gonna say, Did you see eighties 55 20 last night? That's not unrealistic because he's literally done that report.
Let's yes, some games where he's almost had a quadruple double.
He's had 50 and twenties before that's happened.
But it's gonna come to a whole different level now because he's I'm gonna continue to say this.
He's 26 which means he's just kind of getting to his prime and he's gonna do it on a stage in Los Angeles.
Well, obviously, everybody's gonna be watching.
It's going to be incredible.
I I can't believe that this is what we get to watch this season.
We get to watch two of the game's greats and Anthony Davis and LeBron James.
And here's what I love is that everybody is talking about how the NBA's been going small right? We're seeing this small ball revolution where teams air running small, you've got players like like Draymond green, now playing center.
We experimented with Julius Randle, a few seasons ago, its center right.
We're seeing more of these small lineups, but that's in order to get skill.
They were going small in order to create a more skilled lineup.
Anthony Davis has a 76 wingspan, is nearly seven feet tall and still brings that scale.
So the best thing that you can have isn't a small and skilled mine up.
It's a big and skilled lineup, and we said that we saw.
Did you see? I mean, how difficult was it for the Golden State Warriors to deal with JaVale McGee and Anthony Davis together, who both have seven foot six inch wingspans? And then you've got LeBron James out there on the floor as well.
The Lakers were huge, and they were able to go outside because of it.
We talked about it all summer.
We talked about how how big the Lakers were gonna be and how they could dominate inside.
But when we saw it play out on the floor, it was it was breathtaking.
That's what they need to, you know, if you think about it, it's kind of the one area that I keep emphasizing and I keep focusing on you have such a luxury now with size.
If JaVale McGee and a D are playing together, imagine a player that gets past whatever guards that the Lakers have.
And then they got 80 behind.
And if a D is not there, they got to veil.
You're making the offensive teams life.
A living hell, you really are.
And then you come off the bench and Dwight Howard's gonna be there.
Um, and like you said LeBron James at the three in that position, you know, when LeBron is at three.
Cleveland Kevin Love was at the four.
Kevin loves not this beast size of cases you had, like guys like old Tosca set the fire.
You know, not athletic guys like JaVale McGee is and we'd spend everything else.
Lakers have kind of assembled together a team here where they could be a nightmare on defense, much as they can be on offense.
It's all on paper.
It's one preseason game.
The Lakers still got so much that they obviously have to figure out improve and teams are gonna just around them.
But I think you can see what that potential is.
You know, in the near future, I've had a few people there jumping into the chat room here at Laker fan Mike mentioned Quinn Cook, saying, When you still need to see Quinn Cook, we have a lot of point guards on this roster.
Ah, few people saying that they heard good things about Quinn Cook's defense and things like that.
How does he factor into this? Because we just talked about guys who were excellent defensively and could do all these great things.
What about a shooter? The caliber of Quinn Cook? Which is something that I don't think the Lakers have seen in quite a while now.
You've got both him and Danny Green shooting for you while NT Michael Thompson.
I do the pre game show with.
He watched a lot of Golden State Warriors games opposite Clay Thompson Place with Warriors.
So his son, I asked him about Quinn Cook on Saturday.
He said, Quinn Cook is a very streaky guy so he can come in and it three out of 63 pointers or you can go for six.
Um, I don't know how I feel Like Quinn.
Cook is trying to work his way into the line.
Um, he's gonna be a hungry dude.
He's a journey men.
He wasn't drafted.
He kind of got an opportunity with the Golden State Warriors.
Steph Curry got injured.
He kind of stepped in and found himself a role.
But I think you got Rondo that he's gonna be, you know, facing trying to get minutes from Caruso, which we've talked about, you know, we're all excited to see and we think that you could definitely be beneficial to the Lakers.
I feel like Quinn Cook is on the outside looking in, and that doesn't mean that he's not gonna get opportunities.
But even I know another example.
He might be the best shooter on the Lakers.
Char Daniels is what number on this roster.
You know what it means.
So, like they have a number of players are gonna be fighting for submit.
Cook might be one of those players, Did you? So during the way, keep going back to this.
But it's just one preseason game, so tiny sample size.
But to me it stood out.
It was so glaring and so obvious when Danny Green is the guy spotting up out behind the three point line the difference when LeBron's in the paint and he's kicking out to Danny Green compared to what we saw last season, we were kicking out two players lost up to Alonso, right where teams we're going. Okay, cool.
Let him shoot to see teams scrambling to try to get out to the Lakers shooters.
We were begging for that last season.
That was why they made that trade.
To get Mike Mu Scala was to try to some desperate attempt to go try to add some shooting toe.
Have that now to see team to see kind of the fear in the warrior's eyes.
When the ball got to Danny Greene's hands, it was a beautiful thing.
It's 19 days, the difference and out.
Look, I don't know how much the Lakers were gonna use Jared Dudley this year, and I don't know how much playing time he's going to get.
I dub thee Koosman there, lifeless and 1/2 shooters.
You know they're gonna be out there, But Danny Green is he's been doing it for how long you know his championship with the Spurs in the championship of the Toronto Raptors.
He played a role, and he knows his role.
I'm here to play defense.
You're right about the defense.
Defense was kind of scrambling, and that's why I'm so curious to see more of these preseason games and just kind of see how the Lakers progress.
But for at least one game they looked like they look like they're going to be the real deal, that it's not just on paper that they're gonna be the real deal this year.
Speaking of which, so the next preseason games gonna be in China Thursday morning to you and me.
Pacific time it Sze at 4:30 a.
Ellen, I'm assuming your waking up bright and early for that one.
I'll be doing the network pregame show, so we'll be live at 4 50 Lymon four zyla.
Somebody better bring in the coffee.
You know, I actually thought about that today.
I'm like, I don't think Starbucks open still 4 30 so Starbucks won't be there to help me.
But you know what? I you know this kind of it's kind of fun, to be honest with you, Like two for the Lakers to be in China.
Imagine how big that is for China.
Imagine how this first games in shade night.
They have such a good n b A fan base, right? They have so many fans that love the MBA in love basketball.
They get to watch a D and LeBron James like in Laker Jersey.
So I think that's gonna be kind of cool toe watch on TV.
Listen, on the radio, even though it's gonna be super Alan, I can say this to help you out.
If you know Ian is always nearby from Lakers Nation, I'm sure you can.
He can hook you up with some of time energy.
If I could throw it through the camera here, I would.
But these things are making these things get you going.
You mentioned this mentioned jerseys.
They're seeing them in Lakers jerseys.
One of the things that I'm on pins and needles waiting for us.
That the next Lakers.
Where were you going? To see the city jerseys, man.
There it feels like we've been waiting forever.
And we still haven't seen the official official duds for them.
You know, I don't know if I'm more eggs.
If I was more excited about seeing some of the Laker jerseys or just seeing a D.
And that's true Media day.
When I saw him on Media Day, it was kind of a cool moment for for Lakers franchise that so accustomed to winning you go six years without obviously making the playoffs.
And now you got one of the top players.
A d just looks good in that jersey.
And And when those jerseys come out, the one that you're talking about, I'm sure, you know, like always, they'll sell like crazy.
And a lot of like feds be walking him all across the country.
They're gonna be sold out like crazy.
Let's talk a little bit about bet online.
But before I dive into a real quick, uh, this whole thing going on with the Houston Rockets and China does that impact the Lakers at all because they're going to be there? Well, they're they're gonna be playing there in just a couple days. Here.
I don't think it impacts the Lakers per se, but it is an interesting, you know, timing wise, right? This isn't it's not small news to China.
This is something that's obviously going on and has been going on.
This boat has been going on for a long time.
So to have a general manager from an American team United team in the United States, while they're in China, um, kind of go against Theo the, um the government, I guess you could say obviously not liked by China.
But look, personally, I'm one to say that I like that the MBA has allowed these platforms for everybody to speak their mind, so I hope they encourage it.
But at the same time, this is a business, and I could see the MBA also a little nervous about, um, kind of creating some kind of rift between China and the United States, especially with how much money is being poured into to the N. B.
You know, a lot of these a lot of these deals these last couple of years, where the the contract's really, really went up to a different level, why that had to do with the agreements and the, uh, just how how much global the league is getting.
But especially in China.
So it's kind of interesting predicament to see Yes, it is.
It's gonna be a really fine line for the league to walk, and you know the Lakers will certainly get questions about it.
But you know when you're asking a guy like LeBron James, who has handled media for forever for entire life.
Basically, I'm expecting some very polished and very, very good answers coming out of those guys.

Alan, let's talk about the guy that we never thought would be a Laker.
It's still a little bit surreal to me.
It was weird seeing him step on the floor and purple and gold.
Dwight Howard, what did you think of his debut? I had some concerns with the with the burst with his explosiveness.
A few of our commenters here in the chat room had mentioned the same thing that they felt like he didn't look as explosive as they were hoping.
Any concerns there from you? Um, yeah, that could be a concern.
I think for me, I just enjoyed Is the way he was playing I enjoyed is kind of all business attitude, you know, nine points, nine rebounds, wasn't complaining about anything, Didn't care who he was playing with.
Didn't care how late in the game he was playing in comparison to, I don't know, starting or whatever the case is, he just played a role.
You seem like he was okay with that role.
Whatever you guys need me to do, I'll do it.
And that's what I liked.
Um, does Dwight Howard not look like the white that we saw him? Houston Or in L.
A on Orlando, You know, years ago.
I don't think we'll probably ever see that white, but I think just to get a smaller version of in might still be effective.
I thought he had a good night.
I thought his demeanor looked like somebody that you want to have under basketball.
Yeah, you know, I thought he did really well in here.
My takeaway was that, yes, he wasn't as explosive.
But I thought that we saw Dwight That was more focused on doing the little things right than we've seen in the past.
In the past, we've seen a Dwight Howard that is so athletic and so physically dominant compared to other players that he got away with bad habits.
I saw Dwight Howard that was doing a good job setting screens that was actually making good, solid contact.
One of my pet peeves in his previous room with Lakers was that he rarely said Yeah, you know, just kind of brushed by and he would slip a lot of screens rather than getting good, solid contact.
I liked his boxing out.
No, he didn't have the springs that he used to have, but I thought there was some pretty good chemistry there between Dwight Howard and Alex Caruso.
If the Lakers would just quit throwing lobs like he's Dwight from from 2010 and throwed lobs like he's Dwight from 2019 which you to bring him down a little bit, I think he's gonna do just fine.
I thought I was overall pretty impressed with what we saw.
Yeah, give him an opportunity to kind of get in a groove and to feel comfortable with teammate for comfortable with these bench players that he's playing with.
But that's coming off the bench.
You know, Dwight has not asked to do anything other than be a role player and for a player that you know will eventually be a Hall of Famer, this stage of his career, not guaranteed contract.
I think the Lakers there's only upside to Dwight Howard If it doesn't work, Dr.
You know, I'm really rooting for Dwight personally.
I want him to work.
I want I want his career to continue, but at the same time, if it didn't happen, it's not like the Lakers put themselves in a tough position where he's on a three year deal or something along those lines.
So really, very only upside.
I think in this in this contract.
Yeah, and it's still early.
But so far, so good.
I I liked what we saw from Dwight Howard out there.
I thought that he did really well, they got a question directed at you, Alan at Laker, Dad. One.
No one said, Sleep well, LeBron shoot at least 75% from the free throw line this season.
We know that was his Achilles heel or one of his Achilles heels last season, where he did not shoot well for the line.
In fact, top my head.
I want to say it was either the worst of his career or perhaps tied with work was worse there.
Yeah, I think worse. Yeah.
So what do you think? Can he get his free throw shooting back on track? What's the deal there? I mean, even even this past preseason here, you missed the Koppel on what do you go? I think he went four of seven from the free throw line.
I want to say I think that's what What? He ended up.
Pull up? Um, I don't know.
I don't know what the what the deal is, but I don't think you'll get 75.
Nothing has really said last year is a good example for him to be.
Was the under 70% last year He was in the 60.
Yeah, he was at, I want to say, 68% off the top of my head.
Last season was not good.
Five of eight fromthe line Saturday.
Um, I don't think he gets to 75%.
Look, let's hope he does.
The Lakers were either the worst free throw shooting team in the N B A last year.
Second toe works, whatever the case was.
But I think just overall they'll do a lot better in free throws.
Drive just because the personnel is different.
You know Danny Green, um, Anthony Davis.
They're gonna be guys that are just better free throw shooter that are on the team, and you know, Alonzo's not there.
Obviously, I think b I was pretty average from the free throw line as well.
They had a lot of guys that struggled from the free throw line, so the team will be better.
Do I think LeBron will get 75%? You know what? Let's just say yes, just be possible.
Let's go, let's go, Let's go with optimism.
Let's put that out there in the universe that good karma just thio kind of cap off the stats here.
LeBron did shoot, actually 67% from the line last season, which was indeed the worst of his career.
But like you mentioned, there's some new personnel in there.
Danny Green Country doesn't get there a lot because of the style that he plays, You know who does is Anthony Davis got there even in his limited minutes last season.
7 times per game shot 79% of the line last season.
He's an 80% free throw shooter for his career that's gonna pull them up.
They've got guys that can hit those free throws, so I do think we are going to see a better free throw shooting team this year.
But I don't know if LeBron's gonna be that gonna be that guy? 80 Thio even put that in perspective 80% from the free throw line eighties.
Gonna have a ball so much this season for a big Bobby? How is he not going to get to the free throw line 9 to 10 times a game this year? I think that's very realistic, and I think just naturally you're free throw percentage will go up because you have personnel.
That's just better free throw shooter.
And I think that's that's what it comes down to.
Uh, let's see at 80 goat user name there said, Why is KCP still getting minutes on? Why's Brando and LeBron in the same line up? So I already talked about the Rondo and LeBron pairing, but KCP you know, we saw him a lot in the second half.
We didn't see him as quite a bunch of the first half fact, I don't recall we saw him very much at all there, but KCP I think he's gonna He's like that kind of for gotten guy.
While we're all focused on Danny Green and and some of these other new players, what's Casey piece? We're gonna be on this team this season, you know, it's it's funny.
Isn't KCP just like a target for every Laker fan when they're frustrated? Fallen? I followed to to, you know, I thought to it.
It was like something could go wrong.
Like you find a way to blame KCP.
He's gonna have a role.
Like I do think that he has a relationship with the front office.
He has a relationship with key guys on the team that I feel like he will be on the basketball court.
How impactful he's gonna be.
You know, you're you know, we named off all these guys talk about Quinn, cook out screw.
So maybe Jared Dudley is going to get some time.
I forgot about PCP as well.
You can only play so many guys.
Yeah, once you get into the season, you do need that consistency.
You're not gonna play 12 hours.
You're gonna play, you know, 89 maybe 10 guys at the most.
I have to imagine KCP has a role in that in that lineup, it's gonna be probably similar to what he was doing before.
But here's what's gonna be key for him.
He's got to be a guy that has the ability to play defense and the ability to get open shots, because 80 is gonna get you a lot of open looks.
LeBron's gonna get you a lot of open looks.
The mere fact that Danny Green is such a good three point shooter there's gonna be attention towards in KCP is going to have opportunities.
There's times we saw Case you'd be late last year.
Put up 30 points in a game.
He can get the ball in the hoop.
Problem with KCP is there times where he's lost for a couple of games.
You don't feel like he feels, in fact at all, and then you can have it.
Yeah, and you know, they I think part of the frustration Lakers fans was last season.
He struggled in the early going, and when the when the going got tough, when the Lakers were really up against him, when things were not going well for them, when they started slip out of the playoff race and the injuries really really piled up, that was when KCP was really struggling and then he got his game going when it was over.
And that was part of the frustration when KCP and people also look at the contract and say, Oh, you know, why is Casey be making $8 million? Well, you know what? You compare that to the rest of the league.
That's an average contract.
And you compare that to you.
Compare that to what KCP does and the production that he has at the shooting guard position.
It's actually a fairly what was What was this? What was his first contract with Lakers? 18 18? Yeah, I was 18 18 12 18 12 8 So, based on that, what next year will be four? Is that how that goes? I think we're going in the right thing.
I don't think you would agree with that.
Yeah, he's making his money.
You should be at.
Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely.
Alan, let's let's finish up with this.
So the Lakers play Thursday morning, bright and early.
You'll be up drinking your time.
Energy drink? Um, yes, sir.
What are you hoping to see? What do you hope to see out of that game? Is there a different rotation that you want to see from Frank Vogel.
Or or just what's Ah, what's your overall kind of hope for that game? I think we got super excited after the first preseason game.
I think, you know, you saw a little glimpse of what the Lakers could be.
An honestly, Trevor.
I just want to see them kind of build off that Seymour of 80 seymour of some of these experimenting of the lineups.
See, you know, I don't think we need to see in coach for will mention your privacy around the same amount of minutes for a B for Anthony Davis and LeBron.
Maybe a little bit more.
And I want to be spies.
They playing a little bit more just cause they're in China there.
Yes, Shanghai and everything.
But I love their mentality like they came out to win the game, you know, And even if its preseason, it's important to have that mentality.
So I love for them to come out, you know, not take a day off and kind of have that mindset in that mentality that let's build a winning culture.
Who cares if it's preseason? Let's try and win and try and find guys like Anthony Davis and LeBron James early and often, and let's see what they could do together. Absolutely.
Yeah, that and my number one is stay healthy.
So if that means that they do play those limited minutes, I'm okay with that.
But I love the intensity.
And that's something that Frank Vogel was partially crediting to Avery Bradley, saying that coming out with that kind of defensive intensity sets the tone that the rest of the team has to follow.
I'd like to see that continue because look, this this team that they're gonna be playing is going to be going out.
And this is another Brooklyn Nets there.
Another team that is feeling good.
They've got some new pieces in there.
They've got Kyrie, Irving, you've got DeAndre Jordan coming in.
Not to mention some solid young players.
I love Jared Allen.
I think that he's a great fit.
I wouldn't be surprised if he takes over the starting role from DeAndre Jordan, maybe even before the season starts.
That's gonna be an interesting one to look at as well.
So this is a Nets team that is kind of feeling the roads right now.
So I'm expecting a fight here.
I think it's gonna be, Ah, really good contest for the Lakers and a good opportunity to go out there and again set that defensive tone because that's what's gonna have to be their calling card this season.
We should We should go live in 3 30 who lives 3 30 in the morning.
We'll do like a little quick little pregame fire to cure.
You want to go live at 3 30? Alan, if I drink enough out time energy drink, I can handle that.
I will be a zombie The rush of day.
But I could You might be able to talk me into that.
Now I'm looking forward to men who we found these next couple of games.
I mean, really, all we're seeing is Brooklyn and Golden State all preseason.
But we do want to see how the Lakers fair.
It was like, really it was so you could get so excited for from a Laker fan perspective after just one preseason game.
What if they follow it up again? What if a d dominates again like it's only gonna add to some of that, But I do agree with you play defense, Come out with that kind of intensity that you haven't.
This thought process of not caring that it's a pre season game there.
I feel like they really wanted to get that win in Golden State.
Yeah. They wanted to kind of set that example.
Set that precedent for the rest of the season.
Last thing here, Alan.
We know Frank Vogel said he's gonna mix up lineups.
He's been doing that a bunch.
What would be your change to the starting five if there's gonna be something switched up? You know, we both like Avery Bradley in there, But if you're gonna tinker with anything, what are you doing there? If you're going to try something different just to see how it works, um, you know, you could put Rondeau there, but I think you know what you're gonna get.
Maybe try Caruso.
Yeah, I'm trying to go.
So in the starting lineup, you know, just kind of see, um, see what that would look like.
And if you did Caruso, I probably bring Danny Green off the bench, keep Avery Bradley, and they're just, you know, we talked a little about kind of the defense of Avery Bradley.
But look, it's it's the only other thing I could see them doing this maybe starting Dwight and bringing JaVale off the bench.
But I really liked develop, starting with with empty Davis.
But who knows? He might experiment.
And this might be one of those games where he's like, let me just try something different just to see if if, if something works that he wasn't aware of.
Yeah, yeah, I mean, this is the time for that.
This is the time to do that. Preseason.
These games don't count for anything.
Sure, we get excited about him. They don't count for the record.
So if you're going to try something out just to see if something works, maybe you stumble across something.
Now is the time for it? Yep, Danna.
And I think he said this before.
He'll continue to.
I believe them on this.
He's trying to figure it out to you know what? It's not like the Lakers.
This has been the team, the same team together for the last three years with same head coach.
You know, this is all new, so it's like you're taken you got all these different recipes and you got all these different.
Uh, you're gonna put them together and see what tastes best.
What works best for the Lakers and coach.
I think he's going to spend the rest of these five beings.
Jennifer? Yeah, yeah, and this is the time for it.
So hopefully they will be able to find some things that definitely work.
All right, Alan, let's let's wrap things up there.
