Hello Lakers Nation.
00:00:14
Trevor Lane here, senior writer for the lakers nation dot com.
00:00:17
Today we're talking about on court combinations.
00:00:20
Can you believe it? We're finally here.
00:00:23
We can finally talk about actual basketball on the floor.
00:00:26
The pre season is about to begin, and what I want to dig into you right now is on court combinations that we can't wait to see.
00:00:34
We haven't seen Lakers basketball on the floor at least non Summerlee basketball since April.
00:00:39
And here we are.
00:00:40
Finally, we get to see LeBron James, Anthony Davis and the rest of the team rolling out there in purple and gold can wait.
00:00:47
Been super excited for this moment, and here we go now again.
00:00:51
Today, what I'm going to get into is the on court combinations that we can't wait to see.
00:00:55
We've been speculating forever about what this Lakers team could look like, But there's certain pairing certain groups that I think might have some chemistry, at least some things that we want to keep an eye on as preseason rolls on.
00:01:05
That's what I'm going to talk about today.
00:01:07
First quick shout out to our sponsors up time, energy drink in dot com.
00:01:10
And, of course, bet online dot G your home for online gambling.
00:01:14
All you have to do is head over to bet online dot g punch in our promo code C l n s 50 and you walk away.
00:01:21
The 50% welcome bonus on your first deposits makes you guys check that out.
00:01:26
All right, so let's dive right into him again.
00:01:28
Three combinations on the court that I cannot wait to see and the 1st 1 might get into is JaVale McGee in Anthony Davis and Dwight Howard and Anthony Davis.
00:01:38
And, yes, I found, like, the oldest picture ever of Pale McGee.
00:01:42
But JaVale McGee and Dwight Howard going against each other here.
00:01:46
White, obviously in the Lakers jersey from his lone season with the Lakers.
00:01:50
Very young javale McGee here.
00:01:51
But both of these guys are therefore wealth.
00:01:56
They're there to protect the rim.
00:01:57
There, there to rebound.
00:01:58
They're there to play defense.
00:01:59
They're there to do those simple things.
00:02:01
And then on the offensive end, they're there to catch you. Finish right.
00:02:05
Stay in the dunker position.
00:02:06
Catch finish on drop off passes from both a D and LeBron.
00:02:10
You're not going to see Dwight Howard or JAVALE spotting up for the three point line like we may have seen, say, DeMarcus Cousins doing that's the one downside about or one of the downsides about losing DeMarcus cousins and shifting to Dwight Howard.
00:02:21
Yes, you get a little bit more similarity between the games of Dwight Howard and JaVale McGee, but you lose that floor spacing.
00:02:27
So the big question is which one of these two guys wins the starting role and does so by playing well with Anthony Davis? When DeMarcus Cousins went down, the Lakers went and got another center.
00:02:40
And the reason why they had to do that? The reason why they had to go get Dwight is because Anthony Davis doesn't want to be the five.
00:02:46
He doesn't feel like his body does a great job standing up to the physical toil of banging against other centers in the N B A all season long for you two to get two games.
00:02:57
And for the Lakers, they don't want their superstar doing that.
00:03:00
They want him fresh for the playoffs, and so it makes a lot of sense for them to go ahead and give and allow a realty.
00:03:06
True center to be on the floor, the Anthony Davis now closing games.
00:03:10
I expect to see a D out there, maybe as the centre, but for the majority of the time, he's gonna be out there with one of Drill McGee and Dwight Howard.
00:03:18
It's possible it's a time share.
00:03:20
Maybe they split it right down the middle.
00:03:22
But I am really curious to see which one of them develops the best chemistry with Davis.
00:03:26
Which one of them can support him? The best.
00:03:28
Which one can help block shots from the weak side? Which one can help on the boards? Which one? I can free up Davis with some bone crushing screens that are going to get things going.
00:03:38
Yeah, you could see some big too big pick and roll when Davis handles the ball because he can do that and he's a pretty capable passer for a big man.
00:03:46
So I'm really curious to see which one of these guys actually clicks the best with Anthony Davis and then who stays on the floor when Davis goes off.
00:03:54
Which one is the guy that you want out there as your loan big when Davis is getting arrest? Is that Dwight, Is that JaVale McGee again? Not an answer that we're gonna have right away, but something to keep an eye on when we look at Frank Vogel's rotations.
00:04:07
Next grouping that we're looking at is the guard situation.
00:04:12
We've got Alex Caruso.
00:04:14
You've got rage on Rondo and you've got Avery Bradley.
00:04:17
It feels like those of the three guys that the Lakers were gonna be looking at for their starting point guard spot.
00:04:23
Which one of them actually wins it? OK, and it's if you looked at the stats.
00:04:29
Rage on Rondo's name shouldn't be in there.
00:04:31
Hey, was he was not good last season, and you could make the argument I did on the last Lakers nation podcast that Rondo out there with LeBron James doesn't make a lot of sense, maybe as a ball handler with the brawn off the floor.
00:04:43
But you know what? We've seen it in training camp so far.
00:04:46
Rondo has gotten some minutes with the first team.
00:04:48
He's got a lot of respect.
00:04:49
He's a favorite of Anthony Davis.
00:04:51
Anthony Davis has a comfort level playing with them, so maybe he is a legit threat.
00:04:55
Toe wind up starting for the Lakers.
00:04:57
The question is, though, who is going to be the best fit in that starting lineup? Is it Avery Bradley? Is it Alex Caruso? Is it Raja Rondo? And again, we can totally count on a guy like Quinn Cook, perhaps even contagious.
00:05:10
Caldwell. Pope.
00:05:11
Because you don't need a true point guard out on the floor because LeBron James is gonna be handing the ball most of the time.
00:05:16
But still, the teams like the three that we need to focus on again are Caruso and Avery, Bradley and Roger on Rondo.
00:05:24
No, Caruso spent time last season for the Lakers.
00:05:27
A point guard, Caruso has become a A legend among Lakers fans.
00:05:32
Captain America Alex Caruso Fans love him, but it seems like most of his minutes so far in training camp have been coming off the bench.
00:05:39
He's been playing with Second unit, been playing both with one and the two, so that suggests that for at least the time being, most likely Caruso is going to be in that second unit.
00:05:47
But again, things can certainly change, however.
00:05:49
The kind that everybody's buzzing about in training camp is Avery Bradley.
00:05:54
His defense has been ridiculous back.
00:05:57
You got to the point where Frank Vogel had to tell the team, Don't dribble around Avery Bradley.
00:06:02
If he's defending, you, don't dribble.
00:06:04
Just passed the ball.
00:06:05
Get rid of it because he's stealing it from everybody.
00:06:07
This was one of the best defensive guards in the N B a.
00:06:11
Just a few seasons ago when he was with the Boston Celtics.
00:06:13
He's had a number of injuries, but he's reportedly in great shape at this point and feels like he is ready to come back and make his mark.
00:06:20
So could Avery Bradley really get into the mix again? Not appear Point guard, but you don't need one when you've got LeBron James on the floor.
00:06:28
Could be an interesting option, especially if you want to look for a three and deals d style point guard.
00:06:33
I kind of see this as Avery Bradley could be the Lakers own version of Patrick Beverley out there on the floor, a guy who's not gonna have the ball in his hands, and I'm not gonna be creating a lot of offense but can knock down shots when need be and complaints a really, really good defense.
00:06:46
But again the big question there is gonna come down to.
00:06:49
Can Avery Bradley knock in those threes consistently? We have heard that Rondo has been hitting them pretty well, that he's been doing a nice job shooting.
00:06:57
Vogel mentioned that he wants to see him as kind of like a a late career Jason Kidd, where Jason Kidd played solid defense for the Mavericks of the Dallas Mavericks in the last few seasons of his career and pretty much was just a spot up shooter from three on the offensive end.
00:07:11
I don't know that we're going to see Rondo do that, but, hey, he's a smart player.
00:07:16
Would like to see a lot more from him on the defensive end.
00:07:18
But it's going to be a battle.
00:07:19
Gonna be really interesting to see how it all plays out, especially knowing Rondo's relationship with Anthony Davis.
00:07:24
How big of a factor is that in deciding who makes it into the starting lineup? The final combo that I really want to see and can't wait to see how the world works out? This shouldn't be a surprise that any of you this is the one we've all been dying to see.
00:07:38
Anthony Davis and LeBron James.
00:07:39
How these two guys play off of each other is gonna be so exciting.
00:07:43
I can't wait to see a LeBron James Anthony Davis.
00:07:46
Pick and roll.
00:07:47
Imagine what that's gonna look like.
00:07:49
Pick your poison.
00:07:50
Especially when you've got Danny Green, who shot 46% from three last season, camped out on the other side.
00:07:56
It's gonna be held for teams to deal with, to try to handle LeBron James and Anthony Davis, and that situation is gonna be really difficult.
00:08:03
But one of the other things that I'm gonna be looking at is how much does LeBron take a back seat, if at all, to Anthony Davis, How much control does he seem to him because you know what? LeBron James ran the offense a ton last season.
00:08:17
That was his, and that's what he's done for his career.
00:08:19
But he went to management when a D was being brought in and said, We need to run the offense through him.
00:08:25
LeBron even offered to giving Anthony Davis's number, and I think that's gonna happen.
00:08:29
Not this season, but the season after.
00:08:31
If Anthony Davis is still a Laker, keep your fingers crossed there that he re signs.
00:08:36
But is LEBRON really ready to pass the torch to Anthony Davis? And if so, what does that look like? Does that mean the ball isn't in LeBron James Hand? You know, we heard this story last year.
00:08:46
We heard it when they brought in late Stevenson and Rondo and all these other playmakers that this was going to take some of the burden creating offense off of LeBron James was going to give him more longevity.
00:08:55
And then, sure enough, once the season got rolling, the ball was in LeBron's hands anyway.
00:08:59
So is that what we're going to see here? Where are we going to see the ball more often than not being run through Anthony Davis? And then what is LeBron do? Does he utilize his skill as a cutter? If the balls in eighties hands say in the high post or out on the wing, What what actions do We see LeBron get put into off the ball what happens there? And then how does a D interact when he doesn't have the ball when LeBron has it? A.
00:09:23
D has never had a teammate like LeBron James, and you can argue that LeBron James has never had a teammate as good as Anthony Davis.
00:09:30
Dwyane Wade probably wouldn't agree, but still, you could make that argument.
00:09:34
I can't wait to see how these two guys play off each other.
00:09:36
I think it's gonna take some time.
00:09:38
It's gonna be some adjustment because they're used to being the Alfa, the lone guy on their team.
00:09:44
At least LeBron was last season.
00:09:46
Anthony Davis has been for his career.
00:09:48
He's been the guy.
00:09:49
But how they play off each other is gonna be so critical.
00:09:52
The Lakers success this season I can't wait to see it.
00:09:55

00:02:57
And for the Lakers, they don't want their superstar doing that.
00:03:00
They want him fresh for the playoffs, and so it makes a lot of sense for them to go ahead and give and allow a realty.
