Lakers Nation Trevor Lane here senior writer for lakers nation dot com This is the Lakers Nation news feed.
00:00:12
We break down all the latest Lakers news.
00:00:15
Also provide analysis for once to come for this Lakersseason.
00:00:19
Today we're continuing our series leading up to the start of training camp, breaking down each player day by day and today we're talking about the guy that I still can't believe is actually going to be a Laker again.
00:00:31
Never would have imagined this in a 1,000,000 years.
00:00:34
Dwight Howard is going to be a Los Angeles Laker today.
00:00:37
I'm gonna talk all about what he can bring to the team this season, both statistically and up here. Wow.
00:00:45
It's all gonna play out on the floor for the Lakers and how he might help them in ways that may not show up on the stat sheet, for we dive into it first.
00:00:53
Quick shout out to our sponsors up time, energy drinks.
00:00:55
How energy should feel.
00:00:57
You can find him at 7 11 GNC and amazon dot com.
00:01:00
And of course, bet online dot a g R home for online gambling.
00:01:05
All you have to do is head over to bed online.

00:01:15
So, Dwight Howard.
00:01:16
Well, look, first of all, we should say it's unfortunate that the Lakers wound up signing Dwight Howard due to the fact that it took an injury to DeMarcus Cousins for it to happen.
00:01:24
That was the what made it so imperative that the Lakers find another center.
00:01:29
DeMarcus cousins tears his a c l most likely done for the season.
00:01:33
The Lakers have already applied for an injury exception for him and being granted that exception 1.
00:01:37
75 million.
00:01:38
Gonna be tough to use that, but they've got a nonetheless.
00:01:41
So the Lakers then went out and looked up signing a few different centers.
00:01:45
We know that they looked at that guy's like joking Noah, Mercy, mercy and Gortat.
00:01:49
I was throwing out Kenneth Faried, but ultimately they settled on Dwight.
00:01:53
Howard decided to go with him a lot of risk.
00:01:56
There's a history with Dwight Howard, right? We know that the Lakers 1st 10 year with Dwight or Dwight's first tenure with the Lakers didn't end so well.
00:02:05
He left as a free agent, 2013 jumped over to the Houston Rockets.
00:02:09
Lakers fans were not thrilled.
00:02:10
Dwight Howard has been vociferously booed every time he returns to Staples Center.
00:02:16
Not a favorite of Lakers fans, to be sure, but nevertheless Dwight Howard here he is, back in purple and gold.
00:02:24
So what can he bring? Well, I know when we look statistically at what Dwight Howard can do at this point.
00:02:29
We're talking about 33 year old Dwight Howard at this stage, so we're not talking about the young Dwight Howard.
00:02:34
We're not talking about M v P level Dwight Howard.
00:02:38
We're not talking about the three time defensive player of the year, Dwight Howard.
00:02:41
We're talking about 2019 2020.
00:02:43
What? Dwight Howard you were looking at his most recent full season.
00:02:47
He only played in nine games the previous season with the Washington Wizards, but two seasons ago with Charlotte Hornets played most of the season and put up 16.
00:02:54
6 points, 12.
00:02:55
5 boards, 1.
00:02:56
6 blocks.
00:02:58
That's what everybody looks, too, when we say Hey, what can quite do? Look, he can still do it.
00:03:02
He's still a good player, but here's my problem with that.
00:03:05
During that season, 36% which was the most of any category of his offensive possessions, were post ups.
00:03:12
And Dwight Howard is not an efficient, post up player.
00:03:15
That is something the Lakers were gonna have to look to eliminate from his game.
00:03:18
Unfortunately, the deal the Lakers signed into is a $2.
00:03:21
6 million deals of a minimum deal, and it's also non guaranteed.
00:03:26
The Lakers want to cut Dwight at any time.
00:03:28
Not only is he gone off the team, but he also doesn't get his money.
00:03:33
So there's a whole lot of incentive here for Dwight to fall in line and not cause problems.
00:03:37
That means you're probably not going to see Dwight Howard demanding post touches.
00:03:41
That's an inefficient style of basketball.
00:03:43
For whatever reason, he has felt for years now that he wants to play with his back to the basket like Akeem Olajuwon.
00:03:50
And then he's going to score baskets by the Bunches.
00:03:53
And it doesn't happen.
00:03:54
His postgame has not refined.
00:03:55
It's never been refined.
00:03:57
It's not something that he's good, and yet it's It's something that he's demanding.
00:04:00
Like I said, the most out of any category of any of his offensive possessions last when he was with the Charlotte Hornets, came from post ups.
00:04:07
The Lakers not gonna want him to do that.
00:04:09
Hopefully, he'll fall in line and not want those post up situation.
00:04:13
Every once in a while, maybe on a necessity, you'll have to throw the ball into the post home.
00:04:17
But for the most part, you want to get Dwight Howard offensive looks in three areas.
00:04:22
You want to get them to him on cuts, offensive rebounds and as the roll man and pick and roll situations.
00:04:28
That's about it.
00:04:29
If you can limit Dwight's offensive game to those three areas, he can actually be fairly effective.
00:04:34
You could have a NIF efficient player in the mold of JaVale McGee I.
00:04:38
Hopefully that sounds familiar because those were three areas that JaVale McGee thrives in.
00:04:42
So the ideal for the Lakers is to have a one a one B combo punch here with Dwight Howard and Javale McGee, both able to provide a similar skill set.
00:04:52
Biggs, who can rebound who can protect the protect the rim and roll hard to the basket and finish.
00:04:59
If you couldn't do those sorts of things on this Lakers team, where defense is going to be focused on LeBron James, Nathan Davis, well, you can have something.
00:05:06
You can have an effective player there on the defensive side of the bowl.
00:05:10
Dwight Howard.
00:05:11
He's not the player that he once was.
00:05:12
He's not the defensive player of the year, Dwight.
00:05:15
That's not gonna happen.
00:05:16
But he can still be good.
00:05:17
He can still do some good things there.
00:05:19
He is always made up for being actually somewhat undersized with his athleticism, and he's also made up for any sort of a lack of of, ah, of nuance in terms of his positioning and and the way he handles drivers to the basket and things like that, with just elite athleticism, ridiculous athleticism.
00:05:37
But that started the Wayne now, and so you're seeing a little bit less effective Dwight Howard.
00:05:41
But that doesn't mean that he's not good.
00:05:43
He can still be a sullen defensive piece.
00:05:45
Just don't expect him to clean up everything.
00:05:47
He's not gonna fix all the perimeter defensive mistakes or anything like that.
00:05:51
Lakers defenders are still gonna have to do their part, they're not gonna be able to rely on Dwight Howard to fix their entire defensive scheme. That's not gonna happen.
00:05:59
But the big benefit to adding Dwight Howard is Anthony Davis.
00:06:03
Anthony Davis does not want to play center, and the Lakers are on board with that.
00:06:06
They don't want Anthony Davis getting beat up, pounding against some of the bigger fives in the N B A.
00:06:12
That's why it was so important that they go land a big to replace DaMarcus cousins.
00:06:17
They want Anthony Davis to spend time at the four.
00:06:20
Davis feels this way.
00:06:21
The Lakers feel this way.
00:06:22
They think it's key to his longevity, and they also want to keep Anthony Davis happy because you know they like to sign him next summer.
00:06:29
I'd like him to stick around after giving up so much in order to get him.
00:06:32
So with a guy like Dwight Howard, that means that between him and JaVale McGee, you can pretty much have a really genuine center on the floor at all times.
00:06:42
You don't have to go small ball.
00:06:44
Yes, there will still be times where Anthony Davis is asked to play center, maybe too close out games that needs to happen, but you've got to reliable options that are legitimate old school style centers.
00:06:54
Now, unfortunately, Dwight doesn't space the floor of the way to Marcus because I would have.
00:06:58
But Dwight can still do some really good things, especially like I said, if you can limit his offensive game to those areas where he is efficient and I need to throw this out here, if you look what Dwight did, there's a lot of reason to believe that Dwight, this time we'll really get it, that he's really going to do whatever it takes to help the team win.
00:07:19
And I know he said the right things before, But if you look at his actions here, you look at what he's done.
00:07:26
He had a contract with the Memphis Grizzlies.
00:07:28
He got traded to the Memphis Grizzlies, get a contract for over $5 million.
00:07:31
He got that bought out for 2.
00:07:32
6 million.
00:07:34
The Lakers are then paying him 2.
00:07:35
6 million in order to come play for them.
00:07:37
So on the surface it looks like Okay, well, he didn't lose any money.
00:07:40
The money's even.
00:07:41
No, it's not.
00:07:43
He had a guaranteed contract with the Memphis Grizzlies.
00:07:45
That was money that he could count on coming in just about no matter what he was getting that money.
00:07:50
Whether Memphis decided to play him a single second or not, that money was coming his way.
00:07:55
By changing this by getting bought out with Grizzlies and giving back that 2.
00:07:59
6 million and then turning that into non guaranteed 2.
00:08:02
6 million with the Lakers, that means he is risking that money.
00:08:07
That's money that he had in his pocket.
00:08:09
Done deal.
00:08:10
He's got it all set.
00:08:11
Instead, he's trying to.
00:08:12
He has instead changed it into a risk for himself into non guaranteed money into money that is only coming his way.
00:08:20
If things go right with him and the team, that's a lot of money to put on the line.
00:08:24
So you've got to really believe in what you're doing, and you've got to really be committed to playing for this Lakers team in order to risk that kind of money.
00:08:33
Even if you're Dwight Howard, who has made untold millions over the course of his incredible career.
00:08:38
So again, Dwight Howard is not just such as Hey I feel like I want to come back to the Lakers and I want to write these old wrongs and and all that and the money's even I'm all good.
00:08:47
No, he's actually risking his money in order to do this.
00:08:52
He is putting something on the line in order to go show that he has something to prove to the Los Angeles Lakers.
00:08:58
It's something approved the MBA that he is not gone, that it's, Ah that his time is not up yet and that he could still be effective player in this league.
00:09:06
So couldn't be a fascinating story line all season long seeing what Dwight Howard can bring to this team, I'm hopeful.
00:09:12
I hope it works out, because if it does, then you can have a really solid one to center punch for the Lakers.
00:09:17
And look, if you've seen the training videos, Yeah, I'm a little bit worried about the jumpers that we're seeing quite taking.
00:09:23
They're not pretty, but he does make a decent amount of him, but he's taken 20 footers and practicing those.
00:09:27
But more than that, if you look at him just his e in his condition, he is shredded.
00:09:32
I mean, look, Dwight Howard is always in shape, but he looks ridiculously in shape at this point.
00:09:37
I think he's taking this seriously, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping that this does work out for Dwight Howard and the Los Angeles Lakers again.
00:09:45
Can't even believe I'm saying that the Dwight Howard is going to be a Laker.
00:09:48
Once again.

Let me know what you think.
