00:01:12
Okay, so javale McGee.
00:01:13
You know, when the Lakers signed him last season, most of us thought Okay, well, they're signing JaVale.
00:01:17
McGee, who was a backup for the Golden State Warriors, didn't even quite play 10 minutes per game.
00:01:22
He's probably not gonna be the starter button.
00:01:24
Behold, he was the starter.
00:01:25
He was the guy the Lakers were turning to and they did that for a few reasons.
00:01:29
They like the way that he could run the floor.
00:01:31
They like the way he could protect the rim.
00:01:33
And they really appreciate the way that he can sit in the dunker position and then feast on all the attention that LeBron James draws when defense is forget about him.
00:01:43
Little drop off passes to JaVale are absolutely money because he finishes with authority.
00:01:48
This is a guy who is excellent and just catching and finishing.
00:01:51
And that's what you need on a LeBron James led team For the season, JaVale finished with 12.
00:01:56
7 point five boards and two blocks, but it was a lot better than that to start the year.
00:02:01
Actually his numbers dropped down because he got pneumonia the the first month of the season.
00:02:05
Five point for 15.
00:02:06
5 points, 7.
00:02:08
5 boards and 3.
00:02:09
3 blocks.
00:02:10
And he was a contender be possibly defensive player of the year.
00:02:13
He was that good and that tough at the rim to score over.
00:02:17
He was blocking everything.
00:02:19
He slowed down a little bit the month month of November, and then as December came along, he got pneumonia and it took him forever to recover that it took months, and that's not his fault.
00:02:28
That's just that's what pneumonia does to you.
00:02:30
And so he didn't recover right away.
00:02:32
It took months for him to really feel like himself again, and by the time he got back, the Lakers were really pretty much out of the playoff push.
00:02:38
I mean, he was out there on the floor, but you could see you weren't seeing the same JaVale McGee out there was a different guy by the time he recovered and really got back up the steam, and he did the last six weeks or so the season he looked phenomenal again.
00:02:52
Unfortunately, by that point, it was kind of a lost cause.
00:02:55
So the Lakers in the summer signed a veil to a two year deal, just over eight million in totals over over four million per year with a player option on that second year, which is what they did for a lot of their contracts this summer.
00:03:07
Pretty solid signing for the Lakers, given the efficiency that Veil showed and the chemistry that he had with LeBron James.
00:03:13
I've said it a town, but JaVale McGee out of all LeBron James assists, the second most went to JaVale McGee the most wins Cow Kuzma.
00:03:22
Second most went to JaVale McGee because again, JaVale just feasted on all of the little drop off passes from LeBron excelled in pick and roll situations.
00:03:31
This is a guy who can catch and finish above the rim.
00:03:33
Doesn't matter of defenders, are there not? Jail is an excellent venture.
00:03:37
He's a quick leaper.
00:03:38
So really good at finishing before defenders can recover.
00:03:41
Makes it make excellent fit with a guy like LeBron James and now, with with Anthony Davis were envisioning JaVale just absolutely dominating on the weak side.
00:03:50
So when a D gets a shot and defenses have to have to crash over to one side to defend him.
00:03:56
He's gonna be right there to clean up any sort of a miss and finish.
00:03:59
Jill could have a big, big season this year, but let's talk a little bit of about his rule.
00:04:04
Last season, he was third in the league in field goal percentage.
00:04:07
Third, but part of that was because he was so good at racing down the floor, and that was a perfect fit with last year's Lakers.
00:04:14
JaVale is an excellent rim runner, and he just flat out faster than a lot of the other big that are out there.
00:04:19
The Lakers were fourth in the league and pace last season, and so that was a great fit for them.
00:04:24
They found a big they could run the floor, the roughly the same speed as guys like lungs of all like Brandon Ingram, guys who want to get up and down the floor in transition.
00:04:32
I don't think that's gonna be the same with this Lakers team.
00:04:35
This year's team is full of veteran players.
00:04:38
They don't need to push the pace quite as much.
00:04:40
We assume that their half court offense is gonna be more efficient because they have both LeBron and Anthony Davis up there.
00:04:46
So you're not going to see them flying up and down the floor at the same rate that they did last season.
00:04:51
So will Ju Veils field goal percentage, which is somewhat pumped up by getting those easy dunks in transition, isn't going to stay that high.
00:04:59
Isn't his effectiveness going to stay that high? Certainly a question to consider.
00:05:02
I do think he's still going to be an effective player.
00:05:05
Just you were expecting to see a little bit more half court play.
00:05:08
Now again, defenses are going to be playing a ton of attention on the bone kind of attention to you, Anthony Davis.
00:05:13
And so I still foresee him getting plenty of open looks.
00:05:16
But he's gonna have to find other ways to be effective in addition to the floor running, because that they're just not gonna be as many opportunities to do that.
00:05:25
Last season, he was in the 89th percentile offense.
00:05:28
That's how efficient he was.
00:05:29
He was in the 89th percentile purse energy on the offensive end, and he doesn't do much more than just catch and dunk.
00:05:36
But he's so good at doing that and playing within himself.
00:05:39
We didn't see him Jack up a few threes, but that was more for fun than anything else.
00:05:42
This is a guy who doesn't try to do too much with the basketball, and that's gonna be really important to differentiate him and his competition, which is now Dwight Howard in the middle.
00:05:51
Dwight loves getting post touches that's been his M O for years.
00:05:54
He wants to get the ball with this back to the basket and to make moves, and he's terrible at it.
00:05:59
All the advanced stats show that it's one of the least efficient things you can do is give the ball to Dwight Howard in the post and ask him to create.
00:06:06
So the question is gonna be, can javale continue to play as efficiency is efficiently? And Will Dwight adopt that style of play as well and give up these back to the basket? Post ups that just don't work out? He doesn't have the skill set for that.
00:06:19
That's gonna be a big question here in the battle between Javelin Dwight Howard for the starting role.
00:06:23
Now, Jill was only in the 55th percentile on defense, and that probably leaves you scratching your head right because we've already talked about how good of a shot blocker.
00:06:31
JaVale is pretty solid on his timing.
00:06:34
He can swat all kinds of things with Rim when guards get past him and get to the bucket.
00:06:38
They think they've got an easy layup.
00:06:40
Nope, Here comes Joe Veils, massive arms swinging, and he has a crazy wingspan to block the shot.
00:06:45
He's really, really good at that.
00:06:47
But why he's in the 55th percentile is that he has used his shop blocking as a crutch.
00:06:52
Okay, and I'm not saying it's a bad shot blocker.
00:06:54
I'm not saying it's a negative.
00:06:55
It's a good thing that he could protect the room the way they can, but he's more willing to let guys drive into the paint.
00:07:02
You see it in his pick and roll coverage.
00:07:03
He doesn't take angles quite the right way.
00:07:06
Oftentimes, doesn't get out far enough on the shooters because he wants to be able to be there at the rim and blocked the shot.
00:07:12
That's usually his top priority, because that's what he does well.
00:07:16
And that's what he's comfortable with.
00:07:17
So he waits on offensive players so that he can block the shot at the rim.
00:07:21
So you see a little bit more dribble penetration than you would like to see when JaVale McGee is out there on the floor because he's so confident in his ability to block the shot once the player gets past him into the bucket.
00:07:30
But unfortunately, it also can create open shots in other places.
00:07:34
So when Javal is waiting at the rim and he and a guy drives into the paint, that will force the defense to suck end and then they're giving up open pass it open shots elsewhere for players.
00:07:43
They're smart enough to take the ball back out, so something to keep an eye on.
00:07:46
That's why Joe Veils defense doesn't quite live up to what you would think it would be.
00:07:50
Is he going to be a starter this year? That's a big question.
00:07:54
It there's gonna be a battle between him and Dwight Howard.
00:07:57
JaVale recently told Spectrum SportsNet that he expects to be the starter, that he was a starter last year, but he understands that it's the coach's decision, so we'll see.
00:08:05
That's gonna be a training camp battle.
00:08:07
The watch between JaVale McGee and Dwight Howard certainly should be a good one if you go based on resume.
00:08:12
Dwight Howard certainly has the advantage.
00:08:15
Three time defensive Player of the year JaVale can't touch the resume of Dwight Howard, but here we are in 2019 2020.
00:08:22
They're pretty darn close as players.
00:08:24
And I could see where you could say that JaVale is actually the more efficient player than Dwight is right now.
00:08:30
So I do expect to see JaVale winning out that battle and maintaining the starting role.
00:08:35
But again, we'll see what happens in training came, last thing I want to touch upon his.
00:08:39
You know, the Lakers lost DeMarcus cousins and everybody was upset about that.
00:08:43
Everything was upset about the fact that the Lakers floors facing isn't gonna be there, right, because DeMarcus cousins could step out to the three point line and teams have to respect him out there.
00:08:52
They have to defend him.
00:08:54
Dwight Howard, JaVale McGee.
00:08:55
Neither of them can do that.
00:08:57
So can they still open up the paint? Look, Javale McGee can open up the paint in a way he can open it up in that teams have to be worried about him rolling to the basket, so they have to make sure they've got somebody ready to put a body on him at all times.
00:09:10
He's gone gravity As a rule.
00:09:12
Men, we tend to think of gravity in terms of shooters, like guys like Steph Curry, who teams have to stay glued to, and that opens up the pain a little bit.
00:09:19
Javale McGee has gravity as a roll man.
00:09:21
Teams were so afraid of him rolling to the rim and finishing that a lot of times they send guys up to tag him red around the free throw line, and that gives up a little bit of space in the middle.
00:09:30
But it also creates a lot more open looks from outside.
00:09:32
So Javale McGee has a roll.
00:09:34
Man is really, really interesting for guys like Danny Green, Kyle Kuzma, who hopefully has improved on his three point shooting.
00:09:40
Quinn cook all the shooters the Lakers have brought in Avery Bradley, Troy Daniels.
00:09:44
Any of them we should see open looks off of JaVale McGee rolls when the defense collapsed, collapses to stop in, and him and same thing with Anthony Davis, same thing with Dwight Howard.
00:09:54
That's gonna be something that Frank Vogel is gonna have to work on and get into his offensive system.
00:09:59
Finding ways to get those open looks out of these wonderful guys that he's got rolling to the rim.
00:10:04
So JaVale, I think, is probably the best of them.
00:10:06
He's the best rolling to the basket.
00:10:08
And so I'm really anxious to see what the Lakers can do with that.
00:10:11
What kind of offense that can generate just from the attention JaVale draws when he gets ahead of statement, starts heading towards the rim because opposing teams they send everybody at him because they know this guy is a highlight reel.
00:10:22
He can get up and dunk on just about anybody.
00:10:25
And that may open up some outside shots for the Lakers behind the three point line.
00:10:29
Alright, guys, let me know what you think.
00:10:30
What are you expecting to see out of JaVale McGee this season? Can he be the pre pneumonia player that he was last season? Can he make that big of an impact? And can he beat out Dwight Howard for the starting center spot? Go ahead and fire off your comments down below.
