Hello Lakers Nation Trevor laying here from the Lakers Nation podcast and senior writer for lakers nation dot com.
00:00:12
We're continuing our preview of each Lakers player heading up to the start of training camp.
00:00:18
Finally, we're getting so close, we're almost there.
00:00:22
Lakers basketball is nearly back.
00:00:24
We're gonna be diving into each and every player today.
00:00:27
We're talking about tailing Horton Tucker, the Lakers rookie, the guy that was a bit of a surprise pick.
00:00:32
See, here's the thing the Lakers in order to select tailing Horton Tucker, they actually had to make a trade, and they were able to do that by making a deal with the Orlando Magic.
00:00:41
They got the 46th overall pick in this draft by trading for trading their 20 22nd round pick plus cash.
00:00:49
So they made that swap with the Orlando Magic, picked up the 46 pig.
00:00:52
We had heard rumblings that this was probably going to happen, that they were gonna buy their way back into the second round after they went ahead and treated their number four overall pick in the deal for Anthony Davis that the Lakers would look to land some sort of cheap cost controlled rookie.
00:01:07
They would bring him in and bring in somebody who they thought could help the team.
00:01:11
Now I was really surprised with the way they went that they went with Taelon, Horton Tucker and look, don't get me wrong.
00:01:16
That is nothing new.
00:01:17
The Lakers have been an extremely difficult team to get a read on for years.
00:01:21
They have been confusing draft experts for years now on who they would be taking.
00:01:25
But still, I thought for sure, if they bought their way back into the second round, they would be looking for a more experienced players, somebody who had been in college for three, maybe four years and was getting bumped back because of that.
00:01:37
Because sometimes teams undervalue players who have spent a little bit more time developing in college, they feel like they have less upside.
00:01:44
The Lakers have historically swooped in on players like this Guy's like Jordan Clarkson, guys like Larry Nance Jr.
00:01:51
And yet here the Lakers decided to go the complete opposite route instead of going for a guy who might be ready to be a plug and play type of player, someone who can come in and at least play a few minutes off the bench, right out of the gate.
00:02:03
Instead, they went with one of the youngest guys in the draft in tailing Horn Tucker.
00:02:07
Definitely a project, somebody who's going to take some time.
00:02:10
But it's an interesting pink for a lot of reasons, and there's a lot to be excited about here now.
00:02:14
Unfortunately, didn't get to see him during some early yet a stress reaction in his foot, but should be ready to go for training camp here.
00:02:21
So tailing Horn Tucker is 18.
00:02:23
Like I said, incredibly young, the guy doesn't even turn 19 until a month into this season.
00:02:29
Really end in November.
00:02:30
So this is an extremely young player.
00:02:33
Uh, he's six foot four with a 71 wing span.
00:02:37
That's right.
00:02:38
You heard that a 71 Wings back span and he is 64 You think about the N B A right now, and you think about wing defenders.
00:02:45
You think about how wingspan is all the rage.
00:02:47
At this point, you need guards who can go and switch on to bigger players, And that's something that Horton Tucker will be able to do because of his long arms that will give him the ability to go and defend bigger players.
00:03:00
Think about Avery Bradley kind of similar thing.
00:03:02
You're 62 He's got a 67 wing's been, and that's what's allowed him to defend up a few positions every now and then.
00:03:09
He was able to to d up Clay Thompson a few seasons ago, back when Avery Bradley was with the Celtics.
00:03:14
So this is the type of thing that the Lakers were looking for.
00:03:17
A wing defender who could be very, very switchable.
00:03:20
But Horton Tucker bring some things the offensive end, too.
00:03:23
He's not the quickest player out there.
00:03:24
He's not an explosive athlete.
00:03:26
But maybe that'll come right as he develops as he grows into his body as he matures again.
00:03:31
He's still just just 18 years old.
00:03:33
He's got plenty of growing left to do, but maybe he could become something on the offense bend as well, because he's got some passing tools to him.
00:03:41
He's got the ability to pass the ball.
00:03:42
He's not a point guard.
00:03:44
I wouldn't confuse him there, but he's a wing who can also pass the basketball, and that's something that is gonna be in high demand in the N B.
00:03:51
A team.
00:03:52
We're looking for wing players that can make smart decisions out there on the floor for their teams.
00:03:57
So when defenders close out on them and they take a dribble into the paint, that they can make a smart decision, they can read the defense and find the open man.
00:04:05
That's what offenses in the N B A are all about right now, making those kind of reeds and the belief is that Horn Tucker will be able to do that but again, extremely young, going to need a lot of seasoning to get there now.
00:04:17
We also thought that for sure, the Lakers would target somebody who was a knock down three point shooter.
00:04:22
Horton Tucker is not that 31% from the college three right now, which is a much shorter three.
00:04:28
However, if you watch his game footage, he looks very, very comfortable shooting threes.
00:04:32
He showcased If you step back threes or sidestep threes.
00:04:35
Almost Allah, James Harden.
00:04:37
Not that I'm comparing him to James Harden everybody, but he has taken a few shots like that and he looks very, very comfortable doing, and he's pretty strong he's able to get the shot up with these.
00:04:47
It doesn't look like it's a difficult shot for him.
00:04:49
It's just a matter of getting that shop that shot to drop a bit more frequently and again extremely young.
00:04:55
Plenty of time to work on things like that.
00:04:58
Now, of course, the elephant in the room here tailing Horta.
00:05:00
Tucker, his agent is rich, fall from clutch sports.
00:05:03
So how much of a factor was that? Is this the Lakers doing a favor to Rich Paul by selecting tailing Horn Tucker? Or is Rich Paul doing the Lakers a favor and kind of giving them a little bit of a hint that, hey, this guy's being overlooked? And he's probably better than people realize that if you can get him now, you should do it.
00:05:24
Could be a bit of both, really.
00:05:25
But I don't think it's coincidence that he's a clutch sports claim, and he winds up on the Lakers, who have LeBron James, who is the clutch Ford's client at this point.
00:05:35
Along with, you know, Anthony Davis and, of course, also contagious.
00:05:39
Caldwell Pope, so tailing Horton Tucker solid pick.
00:05:44
I think it's interesting.
00:05:45
It's not the way I thought they would go.
00:05:47
I think he could be a really nice piece moving forward.
00:05:50
There's some really intriguing parts to his game.
00:05:53
He's got a lot of scoop shots in the paint, some up, up and unders that can allow him to finish over bigger defenders.
00:05:58
That wingspan is incredible.
00:06:00
His three point percentage isn't great, but I like his mechanics.
00:06:03
I like how easily he shoots the ball.
00:06:05
So what should we expect from him this season? Nothing.
00:06:08
Don't go into the season expecting anything from tailing Horn Tucker.
00:06:11
I've been saying that throughout this whole video. He's 18.
00:06:14
Give him time to develop.
00:06:16
Given plenty of opportunity down in the D League.
00:06:19
That's probably where he's going to spend most of his time.
00:06:21
If he spends any time up in the N B A.
00:06:23
That's just a bonus.
00:06:25
Okay, he's going to need time to develop and figure out his role in the N v.
00:06:29
A.
00:06:30
But eventually he could be a nice three and D wing type player who also has a little bit of playmaking skills.
00:06:36
Some people have compared him to maybe like a a dream on green style player, only more of a wing body again, not saying he's gonna be dream on Green.
00:06:45
But that type of player, the guy who could do a little bit of everything complacent, solid defense, uses his length to contest shots.
00:06:52
That's the type of player that they're hoping he will eventually develop into.
00:06:56
But it's going to take time.
00:06:57
Don't assume that he's going to step in and play for the Lakers right away.
00:07:00
If he blows up and he somehow finds his way in two minutes, that's great.
00:07:04
You look at who's in front of them right now, you've got veterans like like Danny Green, like Quinn, Quinn, cook like contagions.
00:07:10
Caldwell, Pope.
00:07:12
The list goes on.
00:07:13
The odds of him getting minutes this season are very, very slim, but certainly someone to keep an eye on here in preseason, as well as during his time in the D League with the South Bay Lakers, because he's certainly get some minutes there.
