Hello Lakers nation.
00:00:05
My name is Trevor Lane, senior writer for lakers nation dot com, and this is the Laker nation news.
00:00:10
Feed your home for Lakers news and analysis today.
00:00:14
We're talking about Andre Iguodala.
00:00:16
What a weird situation brewing with the Memphis Grizzlies.
00:00:19
Wantedto hang on to Gigi.
00:00:21
And we've got some latest news about how the teams around the MBA are gonna handle this situation moving forward.
00:00:26
Including, perhaps your Los Angeles Lakers, who certainly could use a guy like Andre Iguodala gonna talk all about it.
00:00:32
But first, quick shout out to our sponsor up time energy drinks.
00:00:35
Find him at 7 11 g and see an amazon dot com.
00:00:39

00:00:44

00:01:01

00:01:06
Use that promo code C l and as 50 had bet online dot org.
00:01:10
Okay, So what's going on with under a griddle? Well, I didn't show a few weeks ago about why the Lakers need Andre would all why they could use ah, player like him in the bottom line. Breaking it all down.
00:01:20
Is the Lakers need a wing defender? They do.
00:01:23
You look at the roster.
00:01:24
It is filled with guards.
00:01:25
They've got a couple of bigs now.
00:01:27
And Dwight Howard and derail McGee.
00:01:29
You've got plenty of guys who can play power forward.
00:01:31
You got Anthony Davis there.
00:01:32
You bet.
00:01:33
Kyle Kuzma. They're Jared Dudley there as well.
00:01:35
But you don't have a lot of debt that small forward.
00:01:38
In fact, the only true small forward on the roster is LeBron James.
00:01:41
And you've got Danny Green can slide down and play small forward Kyle Kuzma can slide up and play small forward a little bit.
00:01:48
But neither one of those guys is a true three.
00:01:51
Andre Iguodala would be that I'm particularly.
00:01:54
What would be useful is his defense.
00:01:56
You would want him out there to defend the top wings in the n b A.
00:01:59
I'm talking about Paul, George, Kawai, Leonard, Jimmy Butler.
00:02:02
The list goes on and on all of those players.
00:02:04
You need somebody that you can toss out there.
00:02:06
That's why I said the Lakers need Andre Iguodala now.
00:02:11
Skin a little tricky, though.
00:02:12
The Memphis Grizzlies are not inclined to let him go.
00:02:16
According to a recent report from Sam's Terranea of the Athletic, Memphis wants Andre Iguodala to report to training camp.
00:02:23
This is Andre Iguodala, who is a 15 year veteran and is heading towards 36 years old to report to the Memphis Grizzlies, a rebuilding team that is building around young players.
00:02:34
John Morant, Triple J.
00:02:36
Right? These these air players that the Memphis Grizzlies are building around Joonas Valance.
00:02:41
Eunice is Is there a CZ? Well, you've got some decent pieces there.
00:02:45
I'm excited for the future with the Grizzlies, but this isn't the type of team that a veteran guy lay championship winning player like Andre Iguodala plays for, and yet the Grizzlies are playing hardball with him.
00:02:56
Why they feel like they can get another asset for him.
00:02:59
So they're thinking they're not thinking he's gonna come in here and be the guy to play alongside Jared Jackson Jr or anything like that.
00:03:06
They think that they can get an asset for him via trade because they know that there are a lot of teams out there in the league, including the Lakers, that would like to get Andre Iguodala specifically for his wing defence.
00:03:17
Now they're hoping they can get that done.
00:03:19
But according to Sean Delaney, and this just came out, Sean Delaney of heavy dot com reported that all the suitors around league are not buying this.
00:03:27
They are going to wait until he eventually gets bought out there waiting out the Memphis Grizzlies.
00:03:31
Nobody is surrendering a first.
00:03:33
And perhaps here's.
00:03:34
Here's part of why the Grizzlies already got something for under a widow.
00:03:39
They got an asset.
00:03:40
They got a first.
00:03:41
In fact, they got a really good first, potentially.
00:03:44
Here's what they got in order to absorb.
00:03:46
Andre would all in the $17 million on his contract order to absorb that from the Gold State Warriors.
00:03:52
They got paid.
00:03:54
They got a first round pick from the Warriors, and and it's a protected first But listen, these protections.
00:03:58
They got a 2024 protected first round picks.
00:04:01
We're talking about five years from now, and it's only protected one through four in 2025.
00:04:06
So if the Warriors let wind up with pick one through four in that year, 2025 it's only top one protected, only its first overall.
00:04:13
Otherwise, it becomes property of the Grizzlies and a 2026.
00:04:16
It is totally unprotected.
00:04:18
Who knows what the Golden State Warriors we're gonna look like five years from now? Well, Steph Curry still be Steph Curry at that point? Probably not.
00:04:24
He'll probably be declining by then.
00:04:26
The warriors, of course, feel like they can keep things rolling.
00:04:29
But this is a really good asset, tohave having a pick that far down the road for a team That's good right now that will probably be aged out by then.
00:04:37
This is one of those picks that we could be looking at four or five years from now going.
00:04:41
Oh, man, wait.
00:04:42
They've got that pick.
00:04:43
How they get that.
00:04:44
And then we found out they got it from trading Andre Iguodala from his fist, absorbing that salary, they got a great asset here, potentially for good already.
00:04:54
Now they want to get it, get another asset by flipping him and getting one more first from pick.
00:05:00
Look, the Grizzlies are being greedy here or anything like that.
00:05:03
There are rebuilding team.
00:05:04
They need to accumulate as many assets as possible.
00:05:07
But it's a little unrealistic.
00:05:09
A little farfetched to think that the guy that they got paid to absorb just a couple months ago, they're now going to get an asset for trading a few months later.
00:05:19
The market doesn't tend to work that way, but that's what the Memphis Grizzlies want again.
00:05:24
That's why it makes a lot of sense for the teams around the league to not by what the Grizzlies are saying and believe that eventually he'll get bought out.
00:05:32
Let's say, though, let's say there's a team out there to the decides.
00:05:35
Okay, Memphis, we're gonna pay your price.
00:05:37
Maybe not a first.
00:05:38
Maybe we'll give you a second.
00:05:39
It's almost impossible to do anyway.
00:05:42
Even if there was a team out there that was inclined to give up some sort of asset for Andre would Allah.
00:05:47
Right now, it's all but impossible to do The reason why is because Andre would always making $17 million.
00:05:54
He's actually the highest paid players player on the Memphis Grizzlies.
00:05:57
And so, in order to match salaries, which most teams that are in championship contention, right, they are teams that see themselves as a true contender.
00:06:06
And those are the teams that are gonna want to trade for Eve Adela.
00:06:09
They don't have the salaries to send out without greatly hurting their team or they don't have the salaries that are eligible to be treated.
00:06:17
Because here's the thing.
00:06:18
Once you are, once you've signed a free agent, that contract can't be traded until the middle of December, and 40% of the league roughly hit free agency last summer.
00:06:29
That's a ton of contracts that legally cannot be traded.
00:06:32
Right now, you look at the Lakersroster, most of their roster can't be traded.
00:06:37
Most of these guys they signed in free agency.
00:06:39
I'm talking on Quinn Cook and JaVale McGee was signed in free agency.
00:06:43
You've got Avery Bradley.
00:06:44
You've got contagious. Caldwell.
00:06:46
Pope In A lot of these guys actually have de facto no trade clauses, so there is no way for the Lakers to make a trade right now for Andre Iguodala.
00:06:53
The Clippers are in the same boat.
00:06:55
If you're the Clippers, do you really want to trade? Say, Mo Harkless and Montrose Harold, to get Andre Iguodala know and he's a great piece, but they're not gonna give up that to get him.
00:07:04
So it doesn't make a lot of sense.
00:07:06
There just doesn't seem to be a trade out there for the Grizzlies.
00:07:10
There didn't seem to be a reason for them to be putting their foot down and say, No, we're not gonna We're not gonna buy him out and that's what everybody's waiting for us for.
00:07:18
Eventually, the Grizzlies and Andre would all have to come to terms on a bi open.
00:07:22
Right now, the Grizzlies are holding firm, saying, No, we want assets for him.
00:07:26
We don't want to buy out.
00:07:27
We don't want to pay you, say whatever.
00:07:29
$15 million to not play for us.
00:07:31
We don't want to pay you $15 million to go play for somebody else.
00:07:34
It's and ah, just save, say, two million or so.
00:07:37
That's what they did with Dwight Howard.
00:07:38
They're still paying Dwight Howard little over two almost $3 million this season, and they bought him out in order to not pay him five and 1/2 $1,000,000. They're good.
00:07:47
They're actually paying him $3 million to go play for the Lakers, and the Lakers are paying him the other 2.
00:07:51
6 million.
00:07:52
So the Grizzlies with the Wood all I have decided that they are going to put their foot down and they're not going to buy him out, at least at this point.
00:07:59
So let's say that it would all It doesn't hit the market, doesn't hit the market at all, doesn't get bought out.
00:08:05
The Grizzlies hold him to it.
00:08:07
Say you have to report to camp whether or not he shows up. What? Whatever.
00:08:10
He's under their control.
00:08:11
What the Lakers do from there.
00:08:13
We know they need a wing defender.
00:08:14
They would have to start looking at other options.
00:08:17
The other things they could do is they would need to get a good read on.
00:08:20
Can Kyle Kuzma really play those minutes there because he is one of their best players? He's a guy that they're going to need to really take a step forward this season.
00:08:29
We already saw him with Team USA working on his perimeter defense.
00:08:32
That was something that he was trying to pride himself on was his three point shooting.
00:08:36
If those two things come around is permitted permanent events and his three point shooting, you could see a scenario where Koosman could slide up a little more often to the three.
00:08:44
And if that's the case, that maybe you could mitigate not getting the guy like Andre Iguodala.
00:08:48
The other question is cannon.
00:08:50
Avery Bradley come in and be a positive force at one of the guard positions and then allowed Danny Green to slide down a little bit more.
00:08:56
Maybe you can cover it.
00:08:58
It's not a perfect situation, but maybe you could do it.
00:09:01
Ideally, you'd go get Iguodala because he's got championship experience.
00:09:05
He's got the ability to lock down some of the better players in the league.
00:09:09
But one of the things that I want to make sure that I mentioned here is again.
00:09:12
This is not a 28 year old Andre would.
00:09:14
Although we're talking about this.
00:09:15
Is that mean the Grizzlies wouldn't be trading? But that was the case.
00:09:18
But this is a veteran. He would all.
00:09:20
And this isn't Iguodala that we already saw start to slide last season.
00:09:23
Fact, his reputation right now, maybe higher, as in terms of his defensive abilities than what he can actually do.
00:09:31
His numbers.
00:09:32
According to synergy right now, he was in the 67 percentile on the offensive end last season, which is pretty good.
00:09:38
You'll take that certainly 45th percentile defensively.
00:09:41
That's not what you expect to see from Andre Iguodala.
00:09:43
You expect that number to be quite a bit higher because he has this reputation as a great defender.
00:09:48
Nevertheless, I still think you'd be a wonderful fit with the Lakers if you could deploy him for 10 15 minutes a night.
00:09:53
Just have him go on hound Paul, George or whoever it is that they're going up against that would have value.
00:09:58
That would be a piece that you would want to have, even if it's only for a limited time.
00:10:02
And even if you can't play him every single night because the mileage is getting up there in the wood Allah, you still want him.
00:10:08
I'm just saying it's not the end of the world.
00:10:09
If they don't get him because he's not gonna be able to contribute quite to the level that we think of what we tend to think back to you.
00:10:16
You know? Finals.
00:10:17
M v P. Iguodala.
00:10:18
Who's locking down LeBron James? You're not getting that guy.
00:10:21
He's just that guy doesn't exist anymore.
00:10:23
So it's not a crushing blow if they don't get him.
00:10:26
But it could hurt and there's a flip side to this.
00:10:29
Let's say the Grizzlies decide not to trade him.
00:10:31
They keep him locked up.
00:10:32
Even L.
00:10:33
A is not going to be be freed of his contract with the Memphis Grizzlies.
00:10:37
What happens then? What if you would all wasn't gonna become a Laker? What if he was gonna make the jump to the Clippers? The Clippers expressed interest as well.
00:10:45
In that scenario, it's actually better if he stays in Memphis for the Lakers.
00:10:49
Now the Clippers look, they probably wouldn't be able to use him all that much.
00:10:52
I think the wings that they have right now are better.
00:10:54
But the bottom line is that the Clippers could be going after him just to keep him away from the Lakers.
00:10:59
If you were to land there, that would be another negative.
00:11:01
You'd rather see him say, with Memphis Grizzlies, So him not getting bought out isn't necessarily a bad thing for the Lakers.
00:11:07
We can't just assume that he was going to sign with L.
00:11:11
A.
00:11:12
But it certainly would have been an option.
00:11:13
And you could see where the Lakers could could use a player like him.
00:11:16
I want to finish with this.
00:11:18
Overall, this a bad look for the Memphis Grizzlies.
00:11:21
This is not the way you want to treat veteran players, because here's the thing players don't forget.
00:11:26
Players remember things like these.
00:11:27
Look, the Grizzlies air not a contender right now, and they're not close to it.
00:11:30
And they're not gonna be a free agent destination this season or next season or in the foreseeable future.
00:11:36
They have a long way to go to get there.
00:11:38
But you've got some young talent.
00:11:39
You've got some solid pieces job, Moran.
00:11:41
Like I said before, you've got Jeremy Jackson Junior.
00:11:44
You've got all these guys who they could be attractive pieces to go play with sometime in the future.
00:11:50
And you gotta wonder, Are they burning bridges here? Is this going to be a situation that players a year from now, two years from now.
00:11:57
Look at state.
00:11:58
I don't know if I want to go play for this organization.
00:12:01
That wouldn't do right by a veteran player.
00:12:04
So one thing that most teams around the league try to do is they trying to do right by their players, even if it hurts them a little bit, right? I mean, look, the Warriors wish Kevin Durant well when he went over to the Brooklyn Nets.
00:12:16
We've seen the Lakers send well wishes to players who are on their way out.
00:12:21
Teams tend to do this.
00:12:23
They do favors two players and a part of the reason the Lakers got LeBron James.
00:12:27
Maybe because they treated Kobe Bryant so well for all those years because they gave him that big contract even when he was coming off the Achilles.
00:12:33
Tear it, saying, We believe in you.
00:12:35
We believe in what you've done for this franchise in that you deserve this.
00:12:39
They've tried to make a point of taking care of their players, and yet here we are.
00:12:44
The Memphis Grizzlies are kind of burning.
00:12:46
Andre would only here by not even considering a buyout option.
00:12:51
Look at Anthony Davis he didn't want to go to the Boston Celtics.
00:12:54
And why, because of how they treated Isiah Thomas.
00:12:57
He wasn't thrilled with that.
00:12:58
They just kicked him to the curb when he was hurt.
00:13:01
Wasn't happy about that.
00:13:02
So he decided he didn't want to be a Boston Celtic.
00:13:05
This type of thing can come back to haunt you, and that is the kind of dangerous game here that the Grizzlies are playing.
00:13:11
Is this going to give them a negative reputation around the league, that they're trying to play hard ball with? A guy who's been a better in the league for 15 years has been one of the hardest workers in the ladies always known for putting in the extra effort, and they're trying to nickel and dime in here and get every last asset they can out of him, in this case asking for something that's unrealistic and keeping him from being able to continue his career and just think about this.
00:13:36
Even if they do trade him, are they gonna trade him somewhere? He wants to go, or are they just gonna trade him for whatever gives whatever team gives them the highest asset? Let's say a team like the Orlando Magic calls up, who was a just barely making the playoffs last season, Calls up says, They want you a dollar.
00:13:51
They figured out a trade, and they're going to give up a second rounder.
00:13:54
You with all my might not want to play there, a guy who's been in the league 15 years.
00:13:58
At this point, a lot of teams would just respect that player by him out, given the option to go where you would want to go to finish out his career.
00:14:06
But the Grizzlies don't appear to be going that path.
00:14:08
So that's why I'm saying this could get ugly.
00:14:10
This could get really, really bad moving forward if this drags out for too long, especially if it goes into the season and you've got a player like under Iguodala sitting on the bench in Memphis, or perhaps not even reporting and then it's becoming a distraction.
00:14:24
And meanwhile, the Memphis Grizzlies are in the news for all the wrong reasons.
00:14:28
They're gonna have to be careful with this, that they don't push it too far and start to alienate players and become known as a team that isn't player friendly.
00:14:35
because that's certainly not something that they do want, although we can understand why they would want to get a CZ many assets as they possibly can.
00:14:42

00:14:42
