Thank you for joining me if you seen the title of this stream here.
You know, it's a sensitive subject.
And so I understand you're not.
A lot of people want to jump in and watch and have this conversation with me.
However, James and I both think this is a top of that needs to be discussed.
And as you you see, uh, over here, Tyler Skaggs.
Opioids do effect sports.
Let's just jump into some statistics here.
Opioids have been an issue us with about 400,000 deaths from 1999 to 2000 through 2017 including the 17 50,000.
About 40,000 desk, or roughly 130 deaths per day attributed to opioids.
Opioids have increased.
Opioid deaths have increased so much so that it's now and more desk because of opioids, then HIV gun violence or car crashes.
What does this have to do? It works.
Obviously, uh, Tyler Skaggs.
He was found dead, uh, in July of this year in his hotel room in Texas.
Um, the autopsy has found that he had but no oxycodone and let alcohol content of 0.
In Texas, as with most states, the legal limit is 0.
8 So he was 50% above that number, although the actual cause of death was choking.
On his vomit is the director connection to the opioid use and alcohol use combined.
Currently, MLB does not test for opioids in the major leagues on Lee in the minor leagues because opioids are considered a drug of abuse and not a performance in answer.
So maybe, but what doesn't test for that? The only test for performance enhancers and that was only started a few dozen four.
They have discussed that 70,000 tests in the last five years in the minor league system has resulted in only about 12 positive tests.
Nick, thanks for jumping into a broadcast, man.
I really do appreciate you joining us.
Um, the drugs of abuse that the test, where in the minor leagues is oxycodone, hydrocodone, coding, morphine and fentanyl? Tony of the Players Association, um, has Middle East the statement through a spokesperson here, let's take a look at it for several reasons, including the tragic loss of a member of our fraternity and the other developments happening in the country as a whole is appropriate and important to reexamine all of our drug protocols relating to education treatment.
Um, they do discuss regularly that major League Baseball and the Players Association everything that has to do with the drug program, including in the off season, which I feel like they will at length this offseason.
You want to compare major league Baseball to some of the other sports? NHL has a performance enhancing drug policy where the hey have different tiers of discipline on the substance abuse side, and I don't have a slice of that.
Um, but the substance abuse or behavioral health program or s A B H for short is decimated with specific persons purpose of dealing with issues of substance abuse and the players and their families a confidential matter.
For whatever reason, NHL does not publicly acknowledged what drugs are part of the S A B h.
Oh, I could not find the n b a policy on drugs of abuse outside of marijuana cannabis as a whole for the NFL.
They, uh, list these following drugs as the drugs of abuse.
Um, so you see, cocaine, marijuana, that dedic cannibal cannabinoids EMP, enemy opiates, opioids.
And although alcohol is not a drug of abuse, unless you are within the players treatment program, um, baseball, after like needs to get on a little, uh, similar to the NHL, where, yes, they test for the drugs of abuse, but only so they can get to a point where they can get a player the help that they need.
So, like I said, some of that as a V h Oh.
So here's hoping the off season, which starts in a November ish after the World Series.
Um, I told the Players Association and Major League Baseball the whole get together and could come up with something so that we don't see another tragic loss of a player like Tyler Skaggs.
Uh, once again, thank you for joining me. Everybody.
I really do appreciate it.
Anybody has any comments? Um, please feel free to leave him in the chat.
Oh, well, I do appreciate everybody for joining me for paying attention, and this is an issue that I think needs to be result not just in Major league baseball, but sports were out.
We should have a similar program.
You're all professional athletes, just following a center of protocol when it comes to the substance abuse and performance.
Aunty, just in my opinion.
But again, Thank you for joining us and really do appreciate you.
I will be on again at least two more times.
Have great day, folks.
