Good morning, SportsCastr.
Hope everybody's doing well.
This is, of course, Matt Brooks back today with some SportsCastr news.
Um, a lot happens in the last.
We've had a lot of interesting quotes in the last 24 hours.
There's currently a story going around about the Clippers that I think I would recommend if you don't have an athletic membership already.
Um, go get one, Go do it.
It's And I think they're doing a special right now.
It's like $1 a month right now.
So you could just you could you could read athletic articles literally at any time for $12.
So I I was gonna I might talk a little bit about that story, but, um, it's obviously media week this week in the MBA, so that's a little bit different.
Andi, There's been a lot of pretty fun, interesting quotes.
There's a bunch of them in the docket today.
I you know, and I wanted to settle on this one.
It literally just came came out right now if you guys don't know, you've never used the SportsCastr news section, go ahead and do it.
Like if you need something to talk about? N b a wise.
They're gonna give you a bunch of different topics.
Ah, bunch of different storylines, which are all, like, aggregated from news.
Um, go ahead and do that.
It's a great way to kind of come up with some MBA topics, but, um, yeah, I I wanted to pick this one in particular because I you know, just seeing these two guys in this this graphic where we are, where we are, right there.
Um, it's such a weird, weird team to think about toe have, like a rookie point guard who can't really shoot.
Doesn't really draw contact.
Just tremendous passer like revolutionary passer.
Um doesn't defend with Gordon Hayward, who's probably closer to the end of his career than he's than he is at the beginning of it.
That's not a good hot take.
He's just Yeah, he's an older player.
Um, toe have these two guys together is so bizarre, and I'm just fascinated by them. I am.
Um I think they're going to be a really interesting team in the East.
You know, me and Adam kind of went through the bottom of the east yesterday.
We talked about Washington, Atlanta, Who else? That we talked about.
We might. We spent a long time on Detroit.
All these teams at the bottom of the East that might give teams a good fight.
Um, these guys air interesting, like, you know, ideally, Gordon Hayward comes in.
He's that veteran leader.
He's that star player as well.
And you get him in there and he's gonna be the guy that's gonna kind of set the tone.
So and he's also again, like a pretty, pretty nice playmaker as well.
So that's your supplementary ball handling behind Romelo himself.
Eso you have him in their kind of, you know? Yeah, of course.
Lemelle a ball is gonna be quarterbacking the offense, but Gordon Hayward is gonna be somebody could be dictating.
Hey, like, this is where you want to be here when Lemelle Oh, you know he drives middle.
You should move up from the corner up to the wing, or you should actually rotate, take a couple of steps miles bridges on DFO, fake like you're going for a handoff and then cut back door and you're gonna get an alley oop like there's all these little things that I think he's gonna provided that team that, like, really to be completely honest with you was super rudderless last year.
They were a little more feisty than people expected.
You know, they have Devante Graham doing just, you know, pouring it, pouring it in offensively, especially to start out the year on.
I think they can replicate that again.
Um, there will certainly be shots for him.
That's the beauty of playing with somebody like a melon ball.
Is that you know he is, Yes, he's somebody that, ah lot of you know, he's an exciting player.
He has star potential, but I think initially he's not going to be this giant big time score.
So when you're like a devante Graham who were not quite sure what your long term role is like, maybe you are the next Kemba Walker.
Or maybe you arm or of ah, Lou Williams or somebody along those lines where you're kind of an instant offense, Uh, microwave score type.
Um, you know there's gonna be shots for guys like that.
So they have this really fun roster where it's like you have Davante Graham Cody Zeller still around, setting screens for everybody um, you know, Miles Bridges, PJ Washington, Who is gonna be a nice little stretch for for for Allah, mellow.
And I like that like you put, you know, Gordon Hayward on one wing and P.
Washington on the other.
Maybe he's even setting screens for HLA mellow and small ball units.
It's just a team like you put them on paper.
It makes a lot of sense, and it makes more sense than you than I initially thought.
I you know, you see Gordon Hayward come toe come to Charlotte and you're like, yeah, you know, this is kind of weird.
Like, what is he? What is that gonna be? What is that locker room like Like, what are those guys talking about? Gordon Hayward is, you know, he's got a family.
He's been in Utah in Boston and he's basically hanging out.
He's with the kids now, like he's with a bunch of kids.
But if you look at how it's gonna work on the court, it actually makes a lot of sense.
There's a lot of spacing in that lineup.
You know, your your surrounding Lamell a ball with Miles Bridges, PJ Washington, Gordon Hayward.
That's a decent amount of spacing.
That's a lot better than say, You know what's a good example? Like in Detroit, You have Killian hes coming in there.
You know, Jeremy grants a nice floor space.
Er, um you know, Blake Griffin can space the floor a little bit.
I don't know if I'd call him, like, a catch and shoot guy, but then it's like, Okay, we have, like, 19 centers.
Uh, Sekou, do Mboya like it's just it's not a team that he has a ton of facing to really get his feet wet and feel comfortable.
Charlotte Lemelle a ball is coming in a They're gonna be really fun to watch, and they're gonna be a team.
I think I'm gonna I think I'm gonna find myself watching them get really in.
There is certain teams where I'm like I don't know.
I kind of want to see what this looks like.
This is one of those teams, so they're gonna be really fun in that way.
And and and it is? Yeah.
I mean, they got James Borrego who's running things.
I thought he was good last year.
I you know, I didn't see anything.
That was I guess a red flag about him.
I think he a lot of his fundamentals.
They match kind of what the n b A is.
It's, you know, a lot of high pick and roll spread offense.
Take advantage of guys like PJ Washington who, you know, he recognized right away.
This guy, this guy should play because his skill set makes sense.
Like it doesn't matter where he got selected in the draft last year.
Like this guy should be out there, and he's gonna help us immediately.
And that's not easy.
Like there are certain coaches where it's like, you know, and yeah, I look like they don't have a ton of talent to work with.
So you're gonna kind of in general play the rookies a little bit more because you don't have a ton, but still, like, you could sit there and say, Hey, we're gonna play Marvin Williams.
You know, 25 minutes, 30 minutes, 35 like I can keep going with this.
Um, you could sit there and play those guys in certain coaches just like to do that.
They just feel more comfortable putting vets out there, even if it does hurt you with winds like Look, here's a good example.
Like, look what the Knicks did last year.
You got Mitch Mitch Robinson coming off the bench.
Sure, it's there's foul trouble that you gotta worry about, but, you know, they don't They don't have much internal growth for their young players because, yeah, they have a bunch of kind of like placeholder guys getting major minutes and, you know, that just kind of that hurts your growth.
I really wanna watch the Charlotte team.
Um, I you know, as we kind of get to the season, I'm realizing how fun every team is.
Like, I can't think of too many rosters.
So let me pull this up on my second screen here.
I want to get a look like, let me tell you, teams I don't wanna watch next year.
So I would say the Cavs there was, uh there was a quote going around yesterday on Twitter from I think it was Andre Drummond saying, Like, you know, I'm gonna be playing one through.
I'm gonna be guarding one through five.
Javal is gonna be guarding one through five.
Larry Nance is gonna garden is gonna be guarding three through five.
So they immediately they launched into my like, you know, like I don't even know what to call it.
Like the my car crash rankings like this, like that.
It's It's like you can't look away, you know you should, But you can't You can't look away like that's Yeah, I think that's like the best way to describe it like, that's kind of what they're gonna be for me next year because they have this roster where you have a lot of big men.
Still, I don't know how they did it.
You know, they had Tristan Thompson last year.
They and they brought in Andre Drummond.
They somehow you know, you have this huge front court that made no sense together, and they've somehow done it again.
And I mean, that's cool.
Like if you want to play big, that's great.
You have a little bit of wing help now with a Coro, but dude, like it's it's these two point guards and Darius Garland and and Collin ***ton, who you know, Darius Garland, I think, can play make a little bit better than people are giving him credit for.
I don't think you got a ton of, like opportunity to do that last year.
But after that it's just such a weird, weird, weird, weird, weird roster.
So they're even them.
Like I looked at them and I say, I kind of can't look away from this.
Give me one second here.
The other one I want to do is, um is the is the Pistons like the Pistons Or another one where I'm like I talked about it yesterday like they have a really strange roster.
Like, I think everybody knows that by now.
I really want to try to see Jeremy Grant as elite option, like I just I don't remember the last time somebody had the opportunity to be a really, really important piece to a contending team, a team that made the conference finals and he left to go to, you know, some bottom feeder team because, let's be honest.
It's kind of what the Pistons are for, you know, a bigger role.
I don't know, like I don't remember the last bet on yourself guy like I, you know, I just I don't know.
I really couldn't think of anybody who intentionally did that.
There's certain guys that Yeah, like they go to a team like I don't know, We'll take my my Brooklyn Nets.
D'Angelo Russell comes in Brooklyn, but it's not by his choice.
Like he he gets sent here and and and he figures it out, and he figures out something's.
And now he's e mean based on a lot of the stories that have come out of Minnesota.
He's a big part of what they're doing over there and they're building around him.
Um, you know, And and And Jeremy Grant, on the other hand, just said, Hey, like, I could get the exact same amount of money to play next to Nicola Yokich to be ah, beloved player in Denver, like, just absolutely beloved.
And they he says, Now, I'm good.
I'm gonna go to Detroit of all places and go for it.
And I'm like, I wanna watch that like I really do.
I want to sit here and watch that I want to see what that looks like, because again, like what an intriguing story.
So again, like all of these bottom feeder Eastern Conference teams, the only teams I'm not really that interested in are the Knicks and I'm actually not with that of me.
And Adam went through yesterday, All these teams that we you know, I guess we're like, most interested in our biggest surprises.
And he had the bull's eye.
I don't find the Bulls particularly interesting.
I would like to see marketing and window Carter.
I really like Carter.
I think a lot of people dio I would like to see him under different coaching.
You know, maybe you try to bring out his playmaking.
You You do see if there's something here like you see, if there's this Al Horford light in him, but yeah, I mean, they don't interest me that much.
They had a really quiet off season.
They actually lost some of the guys I really like for them.
Like losing Cristian.
That's that's kind of a shame.
Like that was a He was a huge part of their identity.
I mean, they were a I don't know if they finish their, but they were like a top 10 defense throughout the year, and a lot of that came down to him just being generally annoying, like not in like a Patrick Beverley way.
But I like I can't get by this guy like I I he is going to pick my pocket.
Anytime I do anything, he's gonna press me full court like he was somebody that was a huge part of that.
And, um, I just you know, that's actually a weirdly it hurts them a little bit of my rankings on then, Looking at the West, what more needs to be said, like honestly, I guess the Kings would be the team that I wouldn't be that interested in.
But, you know, even them, it's like I, you know, like they're they have sometimes, like having less is actually a little bit better.
So you look at what the Clippers did.
They lost Montrezl Harrell.
Um, they kind of shuffled the decks a little bit, too.
Michael Green's obviously no longer there, and they brought in Ibaka.
So they're they're a different team than last year.
They still have.
And again, like there's this article going around, which I recommend reading.
Um, they have a bunch of different pieces.
They have a little bit of the old regime clippers there, where it's like you have Lou Williams.
Still, you have Patrick Beverley, Um, but but they you know they lost a lot like they've lost Landry shaman.
They just shuffle things around in a way where it's like it feels like there's a lot less going on and there's a lot less mouths to feed, and there's a you know, it just something about their roster feels a little bit more succinct, I guess is the best way to put it And honestly, like there are a little bit older, which sometimes can really help like you bring in older guys.
There's not gonna be as much ego, and it's that doesn't always work out that way.
But there is gonna be some of that, like you bring in a surgeon box search Ibaka.
At this point, he knows what he is, right? He's a a backup center, starting center, possibly.
Actually, I wonder if he starts for them.
I I would probably do that, though.
I really like zoo botch.
Um, you know, he's a guy who's gonna come in.
It's gonna block shots.
I know he had a little bit of a down year is a rim protector.
Um, but, you know, they they they basically are in a situation where they you know, they just have guys that are gonna come in there, know what they want to do.
Debacle, shoot threes, make plays that way.
You I wonder if they trade Lou Williams because you bring in Luke Kennard, Um, and kind of just have him run the offense to a degree like he's kind of a mesh between Sham it and, you know, and Lou Williams.
So Kennard is an interesting piece for them.
They're like, top of the rankings. The king's.
On the other hand, um, I don't know.
I'm even a little bit intrigued by that, because, let's say, like if if Bagley comes back, they're kind of fun, right? First off, we haven't seen them since march.
Um, and they just gave deer and Fox a bunch of money so they don't have that hanging over their heads.
They lost Bogdanovich, which I think is huge for them because now they don't have to sit there and keep him happy.
Even though they he was a restricted free agent, they could naturally, anything that came his way, they don't have to like they don't have to see what they've got in him, right, because I think a lot of that last year was the The part of that was just like, Hey, we kind of need to see who we want more between Buddy Healed and Bogdanovich.
Um, now they don't have to worry about that.
They're gonna probably pay hell that the to start him at the two and just sort of hope that him and Fox continue to grow together.
I think there's some growing pains with that and a lot of it.
I just really comes down to Buddy.
Hell doesn't offer that much else outside of shooting the ball.
Um, he just hasn't really developed in that way.
And I think for them like that's a little bit of, Ah, shame and a lot of ways because I think they bet big on that like they was either. Like the defense.
They want him to get to a passable level, or it's like we expect this guy to take a playmaking leap.
I just don't know if that's gonna happen.
I don't know if he's that type of a player, so now they have a team that there's they brought in like they brought in Hassan Whiteside again on and it's just like a team that it's mostly the same as it was last year, but at the same time, they just weren't healthy and that really, I think, hurt them in this year where they were expected.
Kind of in a lot of ways to take this leap.
You know, you have this great year.
They come out the gates two years ago, Um, just set the world ablaze.
And they're this, like, surprised Playoff, saying we always have one of those every year.
Last year was the Grizzlies.
There was the King's before that, and actually my Nets that year, A swell, Um and you know, they just kind of fell flat.
They made a coaching change.
I don't think they should have made.
You know, I know Yeager's had his ups and downs, certainly because of personality, and And I guess, Yeah, I guess. Phil.
That seems like that's been a thing twice.
Now, um, you know what happened in Memphis and I think it kind of happened again in Sacramento, but regardless, you know, Younger was a really nice job with these guys.
They have a different coach this year.
He really changed the offense.
They play a lot slower, which I never really understood because they have deer and Fox e think the idea was to try to make him a better half court player.
Um, I don't know if that's the way you do that.
You don't slow it down and force him to figure it out.
I think you'd wanna play to his strengths and again, like he was injured so that that hurt them a lot.
But, you know, even them, like, look, not a ton of moves.
They're probably one of the least interesting teams at the bottom of West.
I still find them interesting.
And maybe they make a huge change.
Like the obvious change for them is we're going to speed it up.
We're gonna be a fast paced team.
You know, we tried something different last year.
We're gonna lean into this, especially if they have badly healthy, Which who knows? Um, you're gonna wanna play something a little bit upbeat.
You know, you wanna play faster because he's somebody that again, like that's just a guy that he's gonna get up and down the floor.
He could handle a little bit.
I like him a lot.
You know, you could do that with Rashawn homes so they can.
Also, they could be a team that suddenly is a lot more interesting.
Um, take the, you know, the Spurs.
They were somebody that almost selected to do this show today.
They're actually a lot of fun, you know? You look at them, you say Okay, it's the end of the road.
Popovich is, you know, he had a couple of mysterious quotes from It seemed like the I'm assuming that was from, like, media week or the first day of media week saying, Look like we got to make some big changes where in a new era, a new wave.
But here's the thing.
I kind of they're starting to make a little bit of sense.
They have now drafted a bunch of players, then they all kind of have the same sort of thing in common.
That's defense, right? So you have Devon vessel who I love, and I think he is going to be an immediate impact defender.
Just an immediate, immediate, immediate impact defender.
He plays in a switching defense in Florida State, so he's got a ton of experience guided guarding guys of all shapes and sizes, which, you know, think about college sometimes play too big still, Um, you know and and it's not.
It's not a situation where it's multi positional, which is the word, you know.
People love to throw out around the MBA.
He's actually done that.
He's guarded a bunch of different positions.
We have proof, proof of concept with that.
So he's gonna come in, he's gonna have an immediate NBA skill, and that's gonna get him on the floor like, yeah, the jump shot.
We saw the videos.
We saw everything.
But this guy's got a skill.
That and that's as a rookie.
That's what you need.
You need one skill to get you on the floor.
You can survive.
I just talked about Buddy healed for a couple minutes like he's he can shoot it.
He can shoot the **** ball, and that's all he really has ever needed.
To Dio, he's you know, he got a $94 million contract by just shooting the **** ball.
So for vessel, it's like he's a guy.
He's gonna come on, he's gonna I'm sorry I'm knocking this thing over today.
Um, he's gonna come on and he's gonna be somebody that, you know.
He makes an immediate impact.
He put him next to John Murray, who was an all defensive candidate.
I believe that was two years ago now with three years ago because he had a C l injury.
Um, Derek White, who offers a little bit of everything, and I really like that he can defend because he offers a little bit of scoring punch.
That's just a nice like he's a nice player.
I don't know what they're gonna do with him long term because he's a little bit older, but that he's super intriguing, and I think he'll be, ah, big leader for them this year.
Um, and you've killed in Johnson a little bit of explosiveness there.
Um, you know, all these guys that are going to come in and that's kind of an interesting identity, like they've switched from being the spurs of old, which, you know, I mean, one of the basketball teams that I really, really, really made me fall in love with this game is is the 2014 spurts.
Um, you know their team.
They transform this from this like team of all playmakers and and guys that see the floor Well, you know, you have Boris de out and all these guys out there Manu Ginobili that are just such great playmakers.
It took him a couple of years.
Alright, they bring in, they have kuai and and it seems like it's gonna be the kuai Spurs.
Things obviously happened there.
Is that injury that he has? Yeah.
He wanted to manage it differently than they clearly.
I mean, it's just a tricky situation.
Like he he had an injury.
He wanted it to manage it differently.
And it seems like the old guard of the Spurs remember a lot of those quotes from like, Tony Parker, especially Didn't really respond to that, that well.
And he said, basically, screw you guys, I'm leaving.
And and And they were in a weird limbo phase. They bring in.
They have LaMarcus from kind of really, really, like getting one of the best free agents in 2015 class.
Um, you know, that's what LaMarcus was a couple of years ago.
Believe it or not, my fault.
Um uh uh s o they have that.
And then, um, they also, you know, they bring into Marjah Rosen via trade.
And they're this kind of weird in between team, they're zagging when everybody is digging, um, shooting mid range shots just kind of, I don't know, looking like a mid two thousands offense, and they finally kind of stumbled on something.
It's like they have this defensive identity.
They're gonna be super switch Hable They were fun in the bubble.
They've got to Marta Rose and playing the four, By the way, talked about this yesterday with Adam.
You know, the Celtics have this giant trade exception now, which is like to 28.
I believe something in that ballpark.
Guess who is going to be an option for that trade exception? Yeah, it's gonna be these two guys from San Antonio, you know, do Marge arose, and I looked it up.
I believe he's 27.
7 million this year, and then I know that Lamarque is probably fits in that as well.
Um, those air two guys that, by the way, they might get an asset for them now because there's a team that you never know.
I don't I have some questions about Boston um that I expressed yesterday and most of it's just on offense.
I don't know if they have enough punch, especially if Kemp is gonna be missing some time.
All of a sudden options are wide open for the spurt.
I actually do think they're going to get something back for one if not both of those guys eso and I Yeah, I mean, they're they're kind of fun, like they do feel like there digging into something.
They're gonna be a team that just forces deflections, gets out in transition, um, plays above the rim.
I mean, when was the last time the Spurs were the flashy athletic team like this is great, Like that's that's gonna be one of the worst teams in the West.
And they're this super fun, exciting team that I I don't know.
I think they're gonna be a total thrill.
They're gonna be switching.
They're gonna be doing just being a general menace.
Like, imagine you're the I talked about the Clippers earlier.
Imagine you're the clippers, right? It's It's It's April.
All right, You're tired.
It's it's it's It's been a long you're like halfway through the season.
It's been a long It's been a long run.
You know it, Z, you're working under a schedule which I think should be dropping pretty soon.
So what? It seems like we're gonna get that in the next couple of hours.
I know we've got the Christmas games yesterday.
That's usually a sign that the schedule itself is gonna come out.
So, you know, you're you're the Clippers.
You're just You're dog tired, all right? There's been three and four nights there.
You're coming off a couple of back to backs in the last couple of weeks and you see the spurs on the schedule like, Alright, cool spurs are you know, they're they have a whatever.
30 winning percentage.
Um, there 300 winning percentage.
And you're like, All right, this is we're gonna we're gonna cruise tonight.
This is gonna be great, Kwai.
You can play like 25 minutes, Paul.
George, you can play 26 minutes.
Um, you know, and we're gonna lean on some of the other guys.
Conard, you're gonna be doing your thing tonight.
You're actually not because the San Antonio Spurs are gonna be switching everything.
They're gonna be up in your jerseys.
You're gonna be getting pressed at half court by the John Murray and it's they're just gonna be annoying, like they're gonna be annoying team.
And I'm ready for that like it's been so weird not having the Spurs, who they're like, a really, really, really deal identity.
Um, and I like that like it's just again, like, let me close out with this because I know this one's been all over the place today.
But I like to try to just throw out ideas on these solo ones and talk about other teams that I don't necessarily get to talk about and normal settings.
So let me just say this.
You can pick whatever team you want as the team that you're the least interested in, and I bet you there's something intriguing about them, and I have made cases for pretty much anybody.
Everybody in in the league This year.
There's really only a couple of teams that I could tell myself.
Yeah, I probably probably not gonna watch you all that much unless you're on the schedule with the Nets, which is the team.
I'm gonna be watching 72 games this'd year.
Um, you know, and I think That's awesome And it what it really boils down to this year and and last year as well.
There's a lot of parity in the league.
It's it's absolutely wonderful.
I talked about this on my show yesterday.
Basketball MAWR, which you can find here on SportsCastr.
I did this with Katie Handle, who covers the Raptors, were just talking about parody and why it's great and why it is something that I hope continues.
I hope that the Nets don't get James Harden.
Um, you know, not because it wouldn't be fun for me to cover and because it would be.
But but, no, I hope it doesn't happen.
I hope that, you know, the Lakers don't stumble their way into I don't know Yanis, which is like the new thing.
I guess that's going on Twitter.
Um, I hope that stuff doesn't happen, because at the end of the day, it's really fun not knowing who's gonna win night tonight.
It just is so at the end of the day, Yeah, I hope it stays like this.
I love having every single team in the league have at least something interesting about them, and I'm excited for the season.
It's been a really aggressive couple of weeks were one day through Media Day and I'm Marty or Media Week, whatever they call it now, and I'm spent already.
But I'm excited like the payoff is gonna be great.
Um, you know, I think it's gonna be a fun season.
I do, and I I just after the bubble.
You know, I expect greatness in a lot of ways because the basketball that was so, so wonderful, and I really hope it's It kind of bleeds into that this year.
And, yeah, there's just there's a lot of teams that haven't played since last March, and I expect great energy from a lot of these younger, you know, lottery based teams.
I'm just excited to watch them because these guys have not played in a year.
This is what they love to do.
This is what they do.
This is this is what they've chosen for their lives.
So to not be able to do that for nine months, I just think there's gonna be a lot of fresh energy.
So that's all I got on this one.
Thank you guys for watching I I will be back.
It's tricky tomorrow.
I'm not sure what time we're gonna be on.
I'm gonna try to work with Adam. I'm worried.
I have some media stuff for the Nets, so we might be doing it a little bit earlier.
I know on Thursdays we usually do, you know, like a 10 30 slot.
I'm a little worried about that.
I'm worried we have some stuff going on in the in the afternoon.
So we might be on a little bit earlier.
I'm gonna go talk with Adam.
But otherwise, thank you guys.
So much for watching.
Stay safe, Stay healthy and yeah, we'll be talking throughout the week.
We're gonna be doing a whole bunch of fun stuff for Media Week piece, Yeah.
