We're talking soccer.
We're talking Premier League.
San Federman Sandri's Shane Holcomb.
What's going on? Guys doing good? Gen Happy to be here, Sam.
Good to see you back on the, uh, air summaries.
She's like, All right, so oh, jump.
Right and chain.
You wanna start? Yes, sir.
I thought we talked about, um, of course the game.
The weekend is talking vs Chelsea.
But since I know you're a huge Manchester United fans, Sam, I want to talk a little bit about you know, it's success in the champions that you can have that's differ from success in the in the Premier League.
This using because it's been pretty dry, different game.
It's simply a different game.
They're playing a different sport when they're playing against European teams.
The European teams, they're not as physical and they're not as talented.
I mean, maybe PSG is, but you're but you're able to pull out a win against that team.
You're not as gritty when you're not playing in.
When you're not playing against these these English teams and the way Manchester United wins games, you show it shows you that it just can show you that they when they win games, they tend to win them with a penalty in the Premier League.
And it's not a Manchester United game without a penalty.
That's the disappointing thing, this metric United team.
It's one of the it does.
It simply cannot score, simply cannot score from open play.
But then you go to the Champions League and all this space is created.
There can't be a coincidence anybody? Yes, sir, I'll jump in.
I think that I agree with you on the county aspect of things because apparently I think of a lot more physical center backs.
It's usually it seemed like Burnley, a coach like Sean Dyche that is going into the game game, playing against an attack, simply enforcing his players toe stand on the defense and then maybe have a chance on the counter attack.
Meanwhile, in Europe, it's more on the front foot because all these teams can score goals that airplane against in Europe and that tends to leave more chances been field for offenses like Manchester United to open up.
Defense is on the counter attack and I think that's what they have success, score, more goals and that's of course why they win games in the Champions League because they haven't scored a lot of goals in the Premier League this season.
Their goal difference has been terrible so far.
Yeah, Manchester United are in the bottom quarter of the are in the bottom third of the league in non penalty expected goals.
Yeah, yeah, I I tend to agree because as as Shane was saying in the Champions League, obviously since the Champions League there tends to be, you know, more talented teams and I feel like it's just the play is more open and teams are are willing to go at each other more.
Whereas in the Premier League, when when it's, you know, Manchester United facing a smaller club like Burnley as as unexamined that Shane used, they're just gonna, you know, parked the bus and sit back and and and play disciplined defense and really frustrate Man United.
And I feel like when there's more open space to work with Aziz Shane touched on that that's when Man United are are their best when when they have open field for work which a working and build up and build up, leading to leading to goalscoring opportunities.
But when you just pack it in on Man United, I feel like, you know, it could be it could be so boring at times because they just can't seem to do anything when going against a defense, this just sitting back and leaving them no space whatsoever.
So I think that's I think that's a big part of it when you compare it the Champions League to the Premier League for Manchester United in particular.
Yeah, and the and the rial thing that you tend to see with this myth.
Genetic currently said in 11th place, 13 points.
Yes, they played eight games.
Other teams have played 10 games.
But it's not just United that's struggling.
Manchester City is in 14th place.
Yes, and nobody on that team has scored more than two goals.
The only other teams in the league that have that Chris would it.
Burnley As to Callum Robinson at West promise to David McGoldrick of Sheffield United.
As to those are the only other teams in the league that have no score above two goals mentioned City really struggling to put two footballs in the net.
That's why I'm so confused to to see Pogba guys like Pogba and guys like Vanderbeek knocking on the team sheet when you guys were going against Premier League oppositions.
Because you see guys Fred with Tom in a starting over at Pogba and Vanderbeek in the Premier League, and that's why you guys aren't scoring goals because there's not a lot of creativity in that midfield, which doesn't allow holds up for Bruno Fernandez and Rash for Marsha in Greenwood to get into open space.
I really feel like you're missing Pogba, and I know he's such a scrutinized player.
But he's so talented and I feel like he needs more game time to prove himself was stolen and okay.
Paul Pogba was one of the best players in the restart.
Exactly. I he still is.
Yeah, he just needs game time.
I mean, he's not even He's not even coming off the bench in these games.
He's not even coming off the bench.
Yeah, yeah, especially Vanda because, well, I mean, you paid all that money for him and sitting on the bench, which makes no sense to That's just what tends to happen with these guys.
They don't play a lot and it gets and it starts to bother fans.
And then the money they do play, they're not good.
And then when? Something.
And sometimes they play well, it happens.
Yes, it's a weird world, this one.
Anything else you want to say about Manchanda before we move on and talk about Chelsea? Yeah, real quick.
Well, they kinda sorta are.
He wants consistency in his lineups.
He wants players and mold with each other.
He wants to build partnerships, which is why they're struggling in the Premier League.
I think because he's not giving you guys like Pogba invented big minutes, provide them creativity.
He wants to play the guys for a consistent amount of time, which is why you see Freedom, atomic continuing to show up.
Matahachi even coming off the team sheet because he wants to be these relationships.
Sometimes that's not working.
When you put that against bigger opposition is like a city like Chelsea or like even a Liverpool or even an ****nal that have a dynamic attacks.
The creativity and the goals just aren't there and I think that's why they're sitting at the bottom half the table right now.
Yeah, it's just the way that it's gonna work when you're not.
When When? You're just not when you're not playing well does.
That's what will happen.
You're going to lose games, okay? Anything you want to move on, Sam? Yeah, Yeah, I I don't have anything else.
It's just I can only imagine how frustrating is as a Manchester United fan.
Welcome to what the last seven years have been.
I mean, ever since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, it's been the same old story with Man United and there's nothing telling me anything is going to change.
And so I'm interested to see you know, how much longer? Only gonna sell Shire eyes there and if he can turn things around.
But there's nothing really showing me that he will, based on how many United have done so far in the Premier League.
Obviously, we're still in the very early stages of the season, and I would expect men united to improve.
But just not a good start at all, obviously, being in the bottom half and yeah, it's It's the same old story with Man United, Really? So you can't say you're surprised, even though they're supposed to be one of the biggest clubs in Europe.
Yeah, it's one of the It is one of the biggest clubs in Europe.
It's just not performing like it.
Alright, Chelsea is another one of those biggest clubs in Europe and I mean they are by no means struggling.
They sit third in the league right now with an expected goal differential of with an expected goal differential for 90.
That's third in the league and their goal differential is top of the league and we've seen Team Oh, Verner score goals.
We've seen um, Kurt Zouma score goals.
What needs to What's going right for Chelsea? Yeah, it's all right for Chelsea is and I think Sam can testify to this.
Is that Frank Lampard? Currently tonight on Friday, currently Frank Lampard.
Tonight he finally has a full, fully fit squad, which in his tenure so far hasn't happened.
Conte last season, one of our most important if not our most important player, he was at the line up with injuries.
You'd start to get off Our center backs were injured.
Umer went through a tough spell.
Check out tomorrow after emerging onto the seat in December he got injured.
And so all these players who were injured after the restart, some of them coming and playing the restart like how tomorrow and he's struggling to get money.
For now, Chelsea finally have a full, fully fit squad.
And, uh, Frank Lampard.
I really feel like the defense is making the offense click, because last season it was so you're so worried that we're going to concede we were gonna have to score three or four goals to get through the full three points last season.
And now that's not the case.
We can win games one nothing.
And to nothing like we have in the past few weeks, I just feel like fully fit squad, especially in times of thes Were you playing every three or four days is so important for Franklin.
But right now he finally has that for the first time in his tenure, because last season it was the complete opposite.
Yeah, I 100% agree.
Shane and uh, yeah, having a fully fit squad is huge, no doubt about it.
And and also Morgan News with Christian Pulisic being available for the game against Tottenham this weekend.
But yeah, as you say? You know, uh, there's so the offense is so stacked that Frank Lampard almost has a good issue where he has to figure out who he should play on any given night, because there's too many options in a way which which is a good problem to have.
So I come into the season and at this point in the season, I have no concern about about the attack of Chelsea that that that will come.
In my opinion, uh, the attack will produce in my opinion or at least should produce on a consistent basis, with no issue based on the talent that's there.
But the big question as you touched on Shane was the defense of Chelsea and unlike, for example, Man United Since we were just talking about them, the transfers for Chelsea had made an impact.
I think Thiago Silva has been great.
He's been a great leader for this Chelsea team.
He's also he's also been very solid at the back and how about uh, Edward Mendy as well? I mean, obviously they were just huge issues with Kappa in goal.
Um and the goalkeeper position was ah much needed one to improve upon and they went out. Got Mendy.
I honestly didn't.
I don't watch a lot of league, so I didn't really know what to expect from nd.
I did see him now and again in the Champions League, but he's been phenomenal.
I I don't think we can overlook that.
What do you have, like five or six clean sheets and right off the bat in his his first five or six games with Chelsea, including against his former team, ran in the Champions League.
So many then Great.
The goalkeeping has definitely been huge.
And, yeah, we're seeing this team get clean sheets, their only allow, you know, a goal on most nights, at least these last few weeks.
And yet Thiago Silva's been great, and with the defense doing well, you know the offense is going to come.
And so Chelsea, right now they're firing on all cylinders and in a very good position.
My opinion on Lee, two points back of the league leaders taught them and Liverpool eso Yeah, you know, for for Blues fans like myself and Shane, it's Ah, I'm really optimistic with this team and I'm confident based on based on the start in both the Premier League and the Champions League thus far, especially considering how good their defense has been.
Yeah, just toe kind of go off of what Sam was just saying.
I feel like also the midfield.
We've had a lot more creativity.
We were just talking about creativity with, you know, I mean, it's there like they have creativity and a lot, of course, man United.
But Chelsea, It's a whole other story.
I think that's like a little bit about Hakim's.
Yes, and this guy came in from my ex.
He was kind of the forgotten one because he came in.
We saw on in February.
Andi was that column for so on.
He was training with the boys and, uh, people.
He kind of wanted to shadow a little bit.
He, of course, got injured in that game against Brian.
The preseason was really unfortunate to sit out for the first couple weeks.
Now he's providing assist on top assist on top of assist.
Um, and in my opinion, so far, in the past couple weeks, he's been non penalty goal in non penalty expected goals, plus assists plus expected assists per 90 minutes exactly he's only been there for, what, 67 games? Now he's more than him with the team, but it's because he was there all summer.
That's why he's being successful with this team right now, because he built these relationships him and Venture will have been really excited to see him and Reese James down that right flank, but his left foot is just saying I mean off of free kicks.
Even in open plan, he can be in midfield.
Could be the midfield line past the six yard box, the far post and bench awoken smashed in.
And that's a great weapon toe have because last one of the best creators in Europe is in the 97%.
Listen to this 97th percentile expected assists per 90 97th percentile.
Opie shot, creating actions for 90 and 96th percentile of passes in D Box per 90.
Yeah, one of the best leaders and that that is amongst wingers attacking midfielders in the in the top five leagues for reference.
You want to see Messi? Sure, nine.
He's in Messi's the 99th percentile of Sorry, that's that's including the last two seasons this season, Messi would be 98 1st that he's a forward here.
So give me a winner, Sancho.
Um, Sancho would be 97th percentile.
Expected assists per 90 and 99th percentile passes in the box for 90.
So Zeke is comparable to Jadon.
Sancho? Yeah, that's a great point to bring up by Shane.
Yeah, Zack, He's been He's just so fun.
Well, he's such an intelligent player.
And yeah, you know, his playmaking ability has, uh, has been incredible.
I mean, I think it was the game the other week against Sheffield where he was, he was He was seeking out, um, teammates in the tightest spaces possible.
I mean, just passes that you think are impossible to make.
And he just created goalscoring opportunity after goalscoring opportunity.
Another point about the midfield to I think Angola content as well.
He's been playing very good again.
I mean, he had for a little while there.
He wasn't really the content that we saw when he was on that Premier League winning side with Lester and and and Chelsea as well.
He was just a little down for a little bit, I think, but all of a sudden.
So far this season, I really feel like Conte has been playing great as well.
So overall, everyone seems to be on the on the rise for Chelsea on all on all areas of the pitch, which is really showing, uh, in their matches a swell eso. Yeah.
Great point about the midfield as well.
With all of that creativity.
That's their, uh, with what, Zeke and content in particular.
So, yeah, that's a great point by Shane as well. For Chelsea.
Yeah, they're midfield has been extremely creative this year.
Do you want to take a look around the Premier League? Just some players that have really impressed you, Sam.
You can go first, Okay? Sure. Yeah.
Eso for players that happened, right? What was that? Could I go first? Yeah, absolutely. Go first.
Patrick Bamford from Leeds? Yeah, he's the He's the choice.
He He's so good with the ball at his feet.
He has seven goals here.
No one really expected him. Toe.
No one really expected leads to do very much.
And they're not.
They're I mean, they're in 15th, but Bamford's been a bright spot for them.
Seven goals and if you wanna look at it.
And if you wanna look at some advance that he's in fourth in non penalty expected goals plus expected assists per 90.
And he is first in non penalty expected goals for 90 in the entire league.
Yeah, we have Bamford in my Yeah, you could go, Sam.
No, I was just gonna say Yeah, that's a good That's a good shot, Sam.
I mean, he's he had the hat trick in that one game.
I think it was against Aston Villa as well, for for Leeds United.
Yeah, leads air just overall.
Ah, fun team to watch.
And he has the majority of their goals.
I mean, leads a team are just such a unique, literally has half of their Premier League goals.
So he's no doubt been impressive proving that he belongs in the top flight of England s.
So that's definitely ah, good shout.
But yeah, going, going on some other players that I've been impressed by so far off the top of my mind, I'd say I'm gonna I'm gonna say I'm gonna say Hamas because at times for Everton, he's and he's impressed me.
He under his former manager, Carlo Ancelotti.
I really well, I didn't really didn't know if if Hamas with a claimant to the Premier League and do well, I honestly didn't.
I thought he was watched up.
Yeah, Same here.
So just for that clean reason, I've I have I have been impressed by you know how he hasn't been great, obviously, but he has done decent for Everton.
When in making and making an impact, uh, for the top is when I really didn't know if he make an impact for that Everton team. So Hamas.
I've definitely go three assists.
I mean, he's putting up numbers.
And then I also I also have to bring up Harry Kane again.
Because Harry, Harry, can we agree? Harry Kane right now is the best player in the league, like, yeah, I mean, he he just has He has a knack for scoring so often it I mean, it's unbelievable.
He's just a true striker, and, uh, and he's a true striker with nine assists.
He can. He can be a playmaker as well.
Very unselfish player.
I've I mean, I don't like talking him as a Chelsea fan.
But I have a lot of respect for Harry Kane.
Uh, you know, because he's stuck with taught in him.
I don't know how many years now he's been with the club, but he's never long.
Long time he's been there forever.
He's been there for 2012, 2012.
And he's stuck with the club.
Put up four consecutive 20 goal seasons.
And then he got injured each the last two seasons and put up 17 and 18.
He's already at seven in nine games this year.
Yeah, yeah, so that that's That's really enough said about Harry Kane right there.
And he's a big reason why talk? There's not a 30 goal pace.
So that's probably the best player in the league at this moment.
Anyone else you wanna shout out? Um, I'm trying to think of who is really? Go ahead, Shane.
Okay, so yeah, Chelsea.
I'm gonna go back to Chelsea, someone that we didn't mention and Chelsea's midfield.
That's been a big part of their team in the past two seasons.
Now in the Frank Lampard, I mean, let's give some prop to Mason Mountain.
He played all of two games.
Your trade a season for only 21 you know.
Uh, but here's a guy in my Cris Collinsworth voice.
Here's a guy that s so important to this team.
He is so important of this Chelsea team and Frank Lampard as took him under his wing.
He's played in like I just met.
He's played it all but through games in his Chelsea career so far.
And that's including the chance he asked me that, including the care about cup ethic.
I mean, you need a man he's been playing.
He's been starting these games to every single game so far.
For Chelsea was she's got my uncle or into his name and maybe the Yeah, let's talk about some disappointing players.
Start Declan Rice.
Oh, no, no, no, no, no.
I think that's a nice bit.
I mean, I don't think he's been a I.
I mean, really expect him to take the next step.
No goals or assists. E.
I mean, I get that he's been, I get that he's been making his central defensive midfielder back.
I know, but you got.
But you've gotta put something on the board.
Yeah, like, seriously capsule Can't do like I get that.
But you can't just put up a goose egg.
When you're the best player on your team.
You can't be putting up a goose sick Mhm.
Yeah, I I tend to agree on the fact that Declan Rice has been, ah, bit disappointing.
I mean, I saw a lot of potential in him, so maybe my expectation was too high for Declan Rice.
Um, but, you know, I I thought maybe he was on his way out of West Ham as well to go to a bigger club, but yeah, I tend to agree with Sam here.
I mean, he hasn't he hasn't shown me much.
And whenever I I've watched, you know, uh, matches for for the hammers.
I I haven't I haven't really seen enough out of him.
Or at least, you know, he hasn't been finding the back of the net, as Sam said.
So, yeah, maybe my expectation was too high for him, but I was high on him, you know, these last couple of seasons with West Ham, But so far this season, Yeah, he kind of hasn't shown up.
Eso Here's another guy who's been pretty much empty on this score.
One assist for Trent.
Yeah, just a huge step back for a guy that was one of the best creators in the entire world last year.
Yeah, and also another one, not just this season so far.
But ever since he's been since he was transferred to ****nal for way too much money and that and that would be Nicholas Pepe.
Nikola Pepe, who is just I don't know why people think he's good.
He's not very good. Yeah.
I never saw anything in Nicholas Pepper.
Yeah, I had to bring him up a swell.
Yeah, So yeah, just follow what? He could do it in league all.
I mean, I could do it in the jaw.
You can't do it on a rainy night in Stoke.
Alright, you can have but someone in there are players that have played 900 minutes this season.
Do outfield players that have played 900 minutes this season.
Who are they? They're both defenders.
They're both over 30 and they both have zero assists.
Wow, you're never gonna get either of them.
By the way, you create a and Federico Fernandez.
Okay, So, Cogliatti of Crystal Palace in Fernandez of Newcastle.
Is that correct? Yeah.
And can we also shout out young young man's son? Yeah, absolutely.
He has been great.
Yes, I really so much under watch.
Schoeneman son playing.
I'm very scared.
Go up really hard on Sunday.
Yeah, and he also just loves playing to, like you can see the joy on his face.
When, When? When he loves the game back.
Almost anybody? Yeah, I mean, here think I mean and someone that kind of that you could say It's kind of disappointing That you could say is kind of disappointing this season from a from just from just a perspective of I'm just a perspective of pure like what you expect to see out of a guy Like what you expect to see out of a guy of his caliber.
E mean, you you really need Thio.
What? I What I'd like to see is a step up in an Antony martials play in the Premier League.
Mhm it Z Internet is in Internet mean going around something.
Something has mawr something's than Anthony Marshall has goals in the Premier League season.
He was 20 goal scorer last year.
17 in the primarily put up, uh, put up a twenties.
What, did you put up? A 22 spot? Yeah, in all competitions.
He was one of the best.
He was one of the best scores in the world last year.
He put up a Oh, my God.
Just freaking Tell me how many just freaking.
Tell me how Maney.
23 goals last year with nine assists, one of the best in the world finishing and he's kind of blown this year.
Zero gold, zero assists in the primary league.
Yeah, men started not getting the start and ****, you know? I mean, he's starting over Cavani.
I mean, Cavani isn't very good, and I'm not very impressed with their I'm not very impressive Ratchford in the league either.
Yeah, I go back.
I mean, I love Brad. Talk about a garden.
I mean, rash words already scored eight goals this season, but all of them are pretty much in Europe.
Yeah, six of them are not in the league.
Yeah, Okay, so let's talk about pure Arab American bombing because that big, big contract before the season exactly exactly everyone was praising him.
I mean, 200? Well, no, I actually 150 k a week, I think.
And now forgot how to play.
And after the opening day goal against Fulham.
And I mean Fulham are easily a championship side.
I mean, doughnut.
Zero goals for Purim ago, Bobby and sent in Onley.
One non penalty goal.
The penalty that I score against United.
But I'm not gonna count that because that was ****nal's goal of them up.
I just I'm not exactly.
I know it was because it's the only goal they scored all month.
Yeah, I don't know how.
Not kind of Europe weeks, but that might be the greatest thing I've ever heard.
Is that what? All right, Who would you say? Favorite to win the league as of right now, Uh, I'll I'm I said at the beginning of the season that it would be Liverpool again, and I'm honestly going to stick by it right now.
I mean, I I want to say Chelsea, but no, I'm putting my bias aside, obviously, and I still think Liverpool.
I mean, they just showed last.
I know they lost midweek against Atalanta and that was, Ah, bad performance in the Champions League.
But they just made a statement last weekend against Leicester City.
I mean, you we wouldn't have known that they were missing, like half of their half of their, uh, that That was just an incredible, incredibly dominant performance against Leicester City on.
And so I don't know, I just feel like Liverpool are a team who just aren't gonna back down.
No matter how many injuries they're dealing with.
I just feel like the Reds are gonna pull it out at at the end of the season.
I feel like it's gonna be very competitive, completely different than last season, where it was just a runaway for Liverpool.
I feel like it's gonna come down to the very and maybe even the last game of the season.
Who knows? At this point it comes down to the last game of the season.
We're doing it again.
Yeah, that's right.
You two did alive.
I mean, hey, sure.
My heart says that Chelsea, you're gonna win the title.
But Liverpool are gonna win the championship again.
They're gonna win the title and it comes down to this drinking clocked the best coach in the Premier League and that's not a debate.
Catholic club Pep you just You see pep last week and he got out.
He got outwitted by Jose Merino.
It's about like work counted.
What place? With a table right now.
What puts on the table there? Look there on the table.
But look, look, You have way too much recency bias.
I've seen two things.
There are no other and the world can dio Liverpool are a better team and they have a better manager.
They have a better manager on the Aral Sea.
To Franklin put is still super experience Right now I'll take clock, But Pep is still like As of right now, as of this moment you're in.
Klopp is a better manager, but I'm still taking path going forward, Okay, but I'm taking Liverpool's team because it's a lot better, too.
And they have a lot of what you know.
Liverpool hasn't look their best.
Yeah, they still win hearing exactly because they have better death than Manchester City.
They're in second place and they haven't looked their best.
That is why Liverpool, We're gonna win the league Spurs.
They always fizzle out. Chelsea.
Part is a manager.
I just don't know how he's going to react in a title run, Lester, They're gonna do the same thing.
Not very good. Everton.
They're not very good either.
I mean, the Manchester United slow start.
Manchester City. Slow start.
You can't be starting slow.
It doesn't work.
E wanna I wanna highlight depth or a quick here too, Because this season is gonna be the most important part of the puzzle.
Pieces that and therefore showing you right now they didn't beat their e.
They're exactly understood and get running without a top three player in the world in Virgil Van ****.
Yeah, and they're still on top of the league and they haven't looked their best.
That's the scary thing.
They haven't looked their best Z.
He's been phenomenal.
That's one of the guys I wanted to mention earlier.
I just didn't Yeah, same here.
I completely forgot about Children.
He's been John has been great.
I absolutely agree that He has been one of the best that he's been one of the best this year.
He's very much impressed me.
He's third in the league and non penalty expected goals plus expected assistance for 90 Onley behind Kane and Manet.
I mean, when you're when you're when you're when you're Onley behind Kane and Mani, that's special.
He's also only 23.
I know 24 this week.
Yeah, he was really O e wasn't sure when I heard that he made the move to Liverpool.
Sure, how he was gonna dio if he was even going to get playing time and then look what he's done.
So, yeah, he's definitely impressed.
Another great player on for Portugal as well.
I know we're not talking about the Portuguese national team, but it could be a threat at the Euro 2020 next summer, but yeah, I mean, I still think I still think it's probably gonna win that, but I wouldn't be surprised if Portugal comes away with it.
Yeah, and also probably the reason why I think England's going to win.
It is because I really only watch the Premier League.
Yeah, that's true.
Working has got some talent.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Ronaldo go out with one last E hates nothing, although I really don't like the guy hates Southgate unless it's a horrible, although out of the equation, it's still a very talented team.
I don't even think that Ronaldo is the main engine of that team.
Bernardo Silva and Bruno Fernandez sort of the engines, that team.
I mean, you could be concerned about their situation because obviously it's going to be Ronaldo scoring the goals they like.
Fernandez hasn't been great from open play this season, scoring or really creating for that matter.
His non penalty expected goals are lower this year than last, but he was playing the game of his life.
He was playing the game of his absolute life last year.
Mhm eight golden seven assists in 50 and 14 games.
If it wasn't for uh, Fernandez last season, I mean, it would be out there.
Whole management would be out of the team.
That probably wouldn't have finished even in the Europa League spot.
I could argue E.
