October October 15th.
Serie It's always the second Monday.
Hey, we got the chat live up and running.
That makes me feel like this is official on a Wednesday talking Thursday football because, hey, I don't care if Ray got to celebrate Thanksgiving last month at this stage of my life, I'm ready to get into Thanksgiving here stateside that we do love our brethren to the North, along with Ray Route and Lawrence O.
And welcome in to the Thursday Night Football preview will be Thursday day preview.
We'll get into that as well.
But before we dio, we clear the decks here for Ray Route.
As on the other side of the world in European football, we, unfortunately have a sad loss in that world, arguably one of the most significant players in the history of the sport.
Yeah, thanks, Adam.
I know everybody comes in here to hear us talk about American football, but I am outside of North America.
Football is a completely different sport, and it's a game played with your feet.
And today we lost Diego Maradona, one of the stars of the sky, his era, and he'll go down as one of the greatest of all time.
He's the Johnny United's Bobby or Wayne Gretzky.
Whatever other athletes.
Michael Jordan, whatever athlete you want attached to him.
That's who Maradona is.
I know a lot of you youngsters.
They're talking about Christiano, Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
Some of you really old guys want to talk to me about Pepe.
But I'm telling you, it's Maradona.
Best known for the hand of God goal against England.
The English still haven't forgiven him, but I hope that they can forgive him now.
Um, he was a character.
He had some problems.
We can't ignore them, had some drug issues, had some run ins with the Mafia but loved his country representing them on the field.
Representative them as a coach in 2000 and 10.
Won a World Cup with them.
Absolutely phenomenal player.
Absolutely phenomenal club player.
Just a guy you loved seen around it.
I loved listening to Maradona talk, and when he was straight, he and you heard him talk football.
It was just genius coming out of his mouth and I'm gonna miss him.
He was one of the legends I grew up watching and loving, and we really morning today uh, condolences to his family, friends to the country of Argentina, where he's adored Maradona.
You will be missed, but I promise, sir you in that goal.
And that personality in that hand will never be for gotten.
And unfortunately, as we appreciate Ray reminding us of some other figures around sporting what, by the way, as a soccer guy myself, growing up, playing it, growing up, watching it to your point man when he was when he was clear headed and talking the sport, there was no more insightful mind really around in the current Times.
So it's unfortunate to lose something like that that does connect a thread across from the past and now to the future of the sport.
Unfortunately, on the NFL side of things, we also have to relay additional sad information that from the Dallas Cowboys, they also lost someone recently strength and conditioning coach Marcus Paul.
They experience an emergency.
He's having emergency medical issue.
I don't yet have the details on to what occurred, but he unfortunately passed away as well.
They shut down the practice, went to the hospital and and is no longer with us.
He has ties to the New York football Giants organization over the course of his career from Jerry Jones.
Just not not not quoting him directly here, but saying that he was a calming presence for that team.
Obviously, a difficult situation for the Cowboys to deal with it now as well.
Is there going to be playing tomorrow? It's one of the games that we're going to discuss, but, uh, this isn't something that directly relates into the Cove in 19 and what's been going on as far as we know.
But as Mike McCarthy said, it was a privilege to work with him as a coach and toe laugh with him as a friend.
So our condolences to Marcus Paul, his family, the cowboy organization and anyone the new him as well during his professional career.
This is, uh, not the way we like to start these shows, but it is important to acknowledge the people that, unfortunately, we're losing and in both these situations, Uh, certainly far too young, right? This is not.
This is not a ZZ to report when it's someone who feels like they still have a lot of like ahead of them.
Can I just point out guys that like I'm done with 2020 and it's just time to move on that that feels like the very comfortable, you know, comfortable sentiment from everybody.
Like you can feel free to get out of this year.
Anytime you're ready.
This feels the kind of time when you go maybe it's an 11th month year.
Maybe we just start maybe 2020 maybe 2021 just becomes 13 months because I really don't want to be having to deal with any more of this stuff this year.
100% already happened two years.
Get it with that, though. Lawrence.
Welcome in a Well, obviously not an easy transition out of that.
But I know that you just got off doing some great content.
Uh, there with Joe talking about what is going to lead us in here on, then we're also gonna cover just the sport in general.
Really? That's what it feels like comfortable doing on a Wednesday before we get into our Thanksgiving break.
And then rangers gets to have a bonus break.
So good for him is Well, what, if anything, did you take away from talking with Joe about that Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers game that is postponed from tomorrow, getting pushed to Sunday at 1 15 and a bonus game for NBC More.
Believe it or not, Joe never gave me an invite, so I didn't actually get to talk to him.
I didn't get to watch gild the lily. I apologize.
I was hoping for some insightful information.
Well, I did get this.
I did sit down and watch his stream until, I don't know, 10 minutes before we was getting ready to go on because I didn't want to miss being here with you guys talking about tomorrow's games.
And really, he's more along lines of, uh, more.
It seems like he's more upset with Juju Smith Schuster's tweet about it than anything else.
You know, Um, and and in fairness, I mean juju should not have went out there and and complained that, Hey, you know, we gotta have a postpone game.
We can't play Thanksgiving because one team has Kobe issues.
When just two weeks ago, they had multiple players, including Big Ben with that came down with covert was put on the list, you know, and what happened, though that's the point.
That's Judah's point.
And what happened the Steelers played on Sunday, right? There wasn't even a delay in the game.
Big Ben didn't practice the entire week because you know when, When when? Joe, I'm sorry.
You know what? I had to play the Patriots to play the Kansas City Chiefs of Brian Hoyer because Cam Newton was out with co vid Stephon Gilmore, who tested positive two days later, breathed all over Patrick Mahomes.
I You know what? I feel bad.
Listen, the NFL has dropped the ball on Covitz, so I'm beyond caring anymore.
You know what I mean? I was very passionate about at the beginning.
They they should have shut this down and bubbled months ago.
It's now at the point everybody who's not exposed and not positive play the game because that's that's the president, you said.
Why does the team like the Patriots, have to play? But a team like the Ravens don't the Titans? Didn't you know and the Steelers have lost their bye week and the Thursday night Games is like a mini bye week for them because it's an extra break and they've lost this now, too.
It's I'm sorry because the NFL has handled this so poorly to the state.
Now I'm just sitting there going So some teams gonna have a bunch of guys.
Some guys can't.
There's no consistency to this policy.
Isn't there a three day, uh, like some kind of three days in thing where a team has to go three days without having a coach and player, uh, test positive? And if they do that, then they can play that game that day.
But if it's within the three days, then they have to postpone it.
If that was the case, Steelers should have played when they had guys on the covert list, right, because the policy is inconsistent.
Well, that's what that's.
The problem is, right now, you know, we could We could get into the NFL success or failure around the policies and preparing for this.
And certainly there's plenty of things to examine there, and then the and then the other side of it is to is from the players end of it or from coaches or anybody, you end up getting this thing.
This weird chamber of people are frustrated that they're playing it at all people are frustrated, they are automatically playing it.
And you have guys now from the Steelers side to say, Well, we didn't get the same opportunities that were giving the Ravens in this particular week and you can understand that from the NFL side of it you go right and because seven weeks ago we kind of didn't think it was gonna happen many times it had.
Maybe we would have treated it differently back then.
It is a little bit of the, you know, I'm not a provision history.
It's just it's easy to look back and say, Boy, we should have done it better back then then maybe we're doing and now and I'll even go a step further.
The issue is really is Lawrence.
When I talked about before we got on tonight, the problem now is this is coming up at the absolute worst possible time for the NFL, where we're seeing these spikes in the cases around the country.
We know that it's going to make it more and more dangerous.
We know that players we saw is that we talked about the Giants had three cases come up four If you include you know who had a rate after they finish their last game against the Eagles.
Luckily, they had a violet.
They're still gonna miss some of those guys coming into this game on the weekend with the Bangles.
But as every it seems like more and more teams right, three or four guys here, three or four guys there it happening over the last 567 weeks of the season is really the worst possible timing of it because I don't know what the solution looks like.
Does it look like putting a pause at the end of the season before you get into the playoffs and bubbling up? That's the issue that we're going to run into you here for the NFL, I think because and then and then, by the way, may be to raise point.
Then you're gonna get teams like the Steelers who could go undefeated and could then also get a long break before the playoffs start and then again to a bubble scenario and then lose, and it's automatically gonna come back to you right like this.
This delay, we fall out of our rhythm and were not able to maybe have the success that we could have.
This isn't just similar to what the MBA had to experience, even though they certainly did things better on the front end.
When you got into the bubble, it was all these conversations around.
Is it legitimate? Who's suffering from it? Who isn't what teams are bringing? What players, etcetera.
It's just it's unfortunate that it all seems to be coming ahead of the exact wrong time for the NFL.
Yeah, I mean right now.
Like as it sits right now, the Annapolis Colts have two players.
One player just got put on the covert list.
Uniqlo Autry was put on it earlier this week, and then today divorce Buckner put on it.
So as it sits, unless the Colts end up having another person, uh, test positive over the next couple of days before Sunday, they're gonna have to play this game against the Tennessee Titans and and Derrick Henry, minus two of their best defensive linemen, one of the best in the NFL.
And you're gonna have to do that, you know, e I mean, yeah, I mean, and to me, I'm like that's crying on deaf ears right now.
That's like playing the Kansas City Chiefs without your starting quarterback, right? Um e No, no, no, no, no.
I didn't say you're crying.
It just It's the scenario, I think where my frustration comes in, Adam is you and I.
You came on my show on early Saturday morning when Cam Newton tested positive in the NFL.
At that point, had decided they weren't even postponing the game for Sunday.
It was gonna play as is.
And I said to you then I said, What happens if another team, the Steelers or playing gets Cove in? What is the NFLPA doing now to protect their players? And what I've seen is is since the Tennessee Titans and since the Patriots, no games get delayed.
I saw the Buffalo Bills play with no tight ends.
You know, um, I've seen got teams decimated by Cove it and they keep playing and see.
Here's the thing.
I am going to talk about it from a football perspective.
I don't know people going to say I'm talking out of both sides of my mouth because no, the guy who cared about this kind of stuff weeks ago is done because the NFL in my opinion, has dropped the ball on how they handled Cove it.
Here's what you do NFL.
You play it 30 weeks season.
If you need Teoh, you know what I mean.
And you just if you have to push games.
But they're trying to so badly to keep everything in that window.
They don't want to compete with the MBA because that's gonna explode when it comes back in December and they want to be in the thick of the playoffs and they watch because nobody's going to care about the four and six Patriots anymore right there.
And they know that to be a lot of games that people will skip because they'll be Sunday afternoon basketball games on.
That's more enlightening than boring games, so they're trying to push it through.
My whole point is when I talk about from a football perspective, the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday Night Football at home or seven, and so on the road There, one and four.
If any team in football knows on a Thursday night game, the important for Thursday night game at home, it's the Ravens this now it turns into a Sunday game this now this whole week of preparation was rushed.
This whole week was changed for the Steelers, and now they gotta push the Sunday And you know what? I don't blame the guys for being upset because they're sitting there going.
We're getting screwed.
The Patriots are being forced to play.
The Colts are being forced to play.
We're getting sitting out.
We're giving Baltimore a chance to get guys who are maybe not even tested positive for Cove.
It just on the list because there may be exposed to somebody with Covic.
But, well, they'll get all those guys back so they could be as healthy as possible when they play us on Sunday.
But no, the Colts are gonna play the Titans, though two of their top defensive lineman, right? And I think this is where this frustration is starting to get in.
Especially for a team like the Steelers, where they haven't there like the only team in the league that never really got a by week, right? They got screwed out of it the whole way around.
Yeah, no, it's true.
They you talk about just early in the season and the adjustment that have to get made and and then, by the way, they're also undefeated team, right? They managed to still be producing on on a weekly basis in spite of that, and they said the other day to You got week 13 buys for some teams, and that's that's the latest that has ever been.
It's only a handful of times in NFL history that have done that late into into bye week.
And even that scenario is not great for most of these teams.
Because again, it's about whatever stride, whatever rhythm your rain.
It's about maintaining it as you push towards those playoffs.
Uh, you know, not not to derail into the side conversation in the Lawrence.
Feel free to reroute it if you want todo.
But I was hearing this interesting thought around.
Let's say that this game that has been rescheduled for Sunday once in any of these last couple of games for against the entire Pittsburgh Steelers they talked about potentially moving this match up all the way to the back end of the season if you had Thio.
But in a much more novel kind of perspective, what happens if the Steelers or 15 and oh, but they don't play the last game of the of the year to have their undefeated record intact.
How did this the Miami 72 Dolphins do? They still get to keep that champagne corking and ready to pop.
They're going to beat now, By the way, they only play 14 games when they set the undefeated season.
So there's also or you could already passed that threshold in D 50 18 and one at that point.
Will the Steelers be resting guys because they don't care? It does tie into something legitimate in the legitimacy of these Games, right? How do we evaluate the Pittsburgh Steelers at the end of the year if they're 15? Oh, no.
If you have a long delay and have to pay play a week, 18 game or something and they lose that matchup, this is affect any of this stuff.
I mean, this is really the end up having an impact in the in the big picture of how we look back on records that might get set this year, even including right to your point players in players about pushing ahead for the Patriots when you didn't have guys available, including your starting quarterback, Cam Newton does the opposition? Does their records get tarnished because they played against a team that clearly was diminished from who they would have been coming in? Lawrence, You could take it.
Just take it first. So you get in here.
Well, I know I did read somewhere where the NFL had stated that If if something like that pops up, they would implement a Week 18.
And if it's one specific team, they would move four total teams to that week. 18.
That way, you would have in a FC matchup and an NFC matchup during that week so that that's something that the NFL, which that means one team could mess up with the Kobe 19 situation and affect four teams.
Three other teams not having anything to do with it.
That's to raise point.
And then it comes down to, though, What teams go S o do you move? Do you move the Week 17 game between the Patriots and the Jets? So they're gonna mean absolutely nothing and move that two week 18.
Yet the Steelers, who are 15 and oh, are playing.
Hey, this is our undefeated season, or I'm gonna throw another stare at you guys okay? The pay a tree or the Steelers were 10 to know the Chiefs air right behind them.
And you start looking at tiebreaker stuff.
I mean, we're talking the difference in the first round bye and playing the first round of the playoffs.
Now, there's not the two team by anymore, so a loss really puts a pickle into their playoff perspective.
So what if that comes down to that week? 18 game.
Kansas City got to play Week 17, you know, And even if the Giants won, or even if Pittsburgh one Sorry, Kansas City still got there by, you know, they still got their week 18 by before they get into their first round of the playoffs.
Now it seems like Baltimore is probably going.
I don't wanna buy it all because we've been playing awful off the by, you know, having to come in and play football.
But I think this is where it comes, and I out of my said this to you when we did that.
Show that data as far as I'm concerned and the Patriots are now out of it, so there's nothing to do with that game at that time is very Patriots motivated.
All of you know, everybody knew how upset I was, but this season is completely abstract to me.
This is the perfect season for the Browns, the Bills to win it because nobody will care except for Brown's or Bills fans.
And any time they try to say we wanted 2020 we're gonna say the 2020 was a year, you know, like it's Do you think so? Let's So let's let's go down that road a little bit.
Do you think that if they make it through the remainder of this season and the NFL says, Hey, we're gonna push just a brief pause here for 23 weeks, whatever they look like and hopefully they do this in the background, you know, the way that the N B A did a lot of work in the background and then just kind of announced to the public what the plan was gonna be.
Is there a world where they can say we're gonna push a little bit? Extra pause here following the regular season? Find a way to bubble ourselves to the playoffs and mitigate the risk, and as long as you can look out there across the landscape of the NFL and say, Hey, coming into this season.
Although last year's records we're still seeing the Kansas City Chiefs, we're still seeing the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Ravens.
The Colts works better to be a strong team this year.
Green Bay Packers.
You know, all all if all the usual suspects were there and you can even look at, say, the the 40 Niners, who maybe you know who obviously having a much different than they were going to.
But that's all injury based, right? So you're gonna get a quality team, whether it's Seattle, whether it's Arizona, whether it's the rant, a zoo, Long as you get the same basic collection of teams going into the playoffs and they bubble that out and you don't get any positive test that end up impacting the playoffs, can that can that turn you back around right and say, Okay, you know, this still makes a little sense now, and by the way, I'll gild the lily on my own perspective that we know what the NFL is.
It's a league of all.
The sudden random Team X comes out of nowhere toe have one of those improbable seasons.
And if you think about I mean, listen, I'll even say your Patriots, right? You don't know what they could have looked like with a healthy Cam Newton with No Cove in 19 issues without guys opting out, you had a lot of guys opt out ahead of this season that would have been certainly critical, especially on the defense side of the ball. For your team.
There are obviously a lot of things that go into that.
So I mean, I I tend to look at and say, unlike other sports, unlike the MBA, were we all kind of know where the finish line looks like for the handful of teams that have real championship for aspirations? Teams can come out of nowhere in the NFL.
But here's the thing, and I'll tell you why.
It's a strict and I'll tell you, I'll relate it back to a different sport.
That happened this year.
I'm wearing this triple 2020.
This is Bayern Munich.
Champions League winners bonus legal winners German Cup winners front runner Robert Lewandowski, who's now who's one of the finalists for top player, top FIFA Player of the World shattered scoring records last year, shattered his ankle in February, the league shut down in March when the restart happened, Robert Lewandowski was back and played all the Champions League games that he would have missed played all the Bundesliga games that he would have missed.
So when you start breaking it all down, what does Byron look like without the best striker in the world on the field? So here's the thing.
Let's say somebody hurts themselves today and they're out 6 to 8 weeks.
Oh, no, that's That's the first two games of the playoffs.
Suddenly you have a two or three week delay.
Now you have to play one of these top.
Now, these guys are getting healthier.
So to me, I'm going.
This is where the Astra comes in.
Yes, it's the same for everybody else, but he never would have played in the playoffs.
What if my homes blows his knee or not his knee because he'll be able for the season, but something breaks an ankle.
He's out six weeks, 6 to 8 weeks, right by.
The best he could do is be back to the A F C championship game, but you delay the playoffs for two or three weeks.
Suddenly, Kansas City is starting with Patrick Mahomes.
See, that changes the dynamic of the season at, um, you know what I mean.
That to me changes what would have been a regular NFL season.
So, to me, there's always gonna be an asterisk beside this season if Kansas City won the championship or if they even knocked one team out.
That perhaps could have ran the whole way.
This is where my issue comes in.
It's why is much as I'm happy that that Byron won the Champions League, I asked Rick that two tournament was different.
Players who shouldn't have been there were there for the team that wanted, um, and the and Byron had other injuries to, and everybody was healthy by the time Champions League came around.
So you have to ask Trick it because it's there.
Now, Um, I'm gonna admit that if I get into a soccer argument, absolutely not.
And if I'm a Kansas City Chiefs fan, I'm not arguing it, but as an outsider, football fan.
And look yeah, if the Patriots rattle off six in a row, they make the playoffs.
You know who knows, but that's not gonna happen.
So let's not be stupid for me, though.
Now, Now I'm becoming the the not a casual football fan, but the neutral observer football fan.
My teams basically out of it. I'm trying for them now.
I'm like, I wanna watch good, competitive football.
But at the end of the day, do The MBA is an aspect to me.
There's no there's something weird, but there was still a playing every team.
Still, you know what I mean? There was still playing well, but okay, so we'll feel real quick.
Lawrence, do you put every everything this year is all getting a strict for you across the across all leagues.
The only issue that I see is if is, if everybody had to deal with everything the exact same way, it's like the basketball league.
They had to deal with everything the exact same way.
Um, whereas the NFL, the NFL absolutely had to stand by their, uh, their rules that they put in place right? And if you stick stuck by them rules for everyone, then No, I wouldn't have an Asterix there, but it like like Ray was saying like Pittsburgh, right? You know, you have four guys that that jump on the covert list, and they had to play or or the Patriots, You know, with Cam Newton going down, they had the, you know, they had to play that.
Granted, they postponed it.
What? One day, I think it was Yeah, one day, one day, one day, You know, at if the NFL had stuck with its guns on.
Hey, you can't have any positive test within three days.
Then I would be like, No, because everybody, everybody was going with the exact same situation.
So on the NBA side of it, because I remember now you think about the Portland Trailblazers they had Nurkic, who had an injury, was able to come back and be a part of what they did there for my own Brooklyn Nets.
There was speculation around whether or not Kevin Durant could or maybe was going to make an appearance into that run.
Now is that Is that that automatically throw it all off? Because that's to your point, right? Is that hey, who would have been injured or who have been healthy or not? I think I get what you're saying, Lawrence in the idea of and you mentioned it right, everyone would feel the same set of cir***stances in the n b.
A. All the policies were in place.
And yet because because we're saying is like in every every sport, every championship for this entirety of this season and maybe a little bit beyond it, even depending on how things look is going to be an ass trick type of season.
Now I agree with the idea of If it's not same cir***stances, like Lauren said, then I get it.
But if you just if you just look at it, you can go across the N B A.
You could go across major league baseball.
You could go across NHL and say, Well, this guy would have been hurt.
He wouldn't have been here.
So unless you were gonna go into every one of those leagues and say, if you were gonna miss it, then you have to miss it.
That's the only way that you could have legitimized.
Because if you're putting you on track and the only the only caveat that will throw in there is, I know you say everyone feels the same set of cir***stances.
But in any given year in any given sport, What if Mahomes has an injury? What if you know, I mean, Matthew Stafford is that with a ton injuries this year, but we're not a sport, but we're not talking about delays in playoff starts we're not talking about.
Here is the schedule.
We're gonna change the schedule throughout the whole season.
I mean, that's a very E.
That's a very different cir***stances.
Okay? And you know what? Like it's funny because I asked, Tricked the world Siri's poor Dodgers, who finally pull it off? What? I mean, because there was team that went to the playoffs who didn't play the same amount of regular season games as as a team who didn't make the playoffs, which was a big concern for me in football because, like, that's to me.
As soon as a soon as the Cardinals were back in the running for the playoffs, I stopped caring about baseball.
You know what I mean? As soon as they started making a run on, you know, it didn't affect anything.
But as soon as all of a sudden there was a chance and I'm like, they're gonna play 10 last games at everybody else.
And I was like Miami Marlins, right? When the early on in the in the restart, it was like Hey, hey, hey, this team supposed to bottom of the barrel And if they don't start leveling off and bottoming out, at least if they find themselves deep in the playoffs everyone was gonna look at them poorly.
But I think one of like, if the Baltimore Orioles, all the shutters showed up in the playoffs. Ugo.
Alright, friends. We got a bit of a problem here.
Yeah, and that was my piece. So to me.
I stopped watching it.
I didn't care anymore on Blue Jays went to the playoffs.
So my team was in the playoffs and I just didn't care.
I said The baseball season means nothing to me.
Okay, look, I asked her Champions League, and it's my team who won the championship, so I'm not being biased.
I asked her basketball, too.
I think basketball did it the best.
I think the NHL did it the best.
You set up the bubbles there were playing.
There was tournaments.
You okay? hockey a little different, had their little pre round tournament to see who gets into the playoffs.
But there is unearned spot just to delay the playoffs because in football, too, is the game of momentum.
And it is, you know that.
So what if the Patriots go six and Oh, and make the playoffs a 10 and six and now they got to sit for three weeks? That Mo Mentum is gone, You know, I mean that any team who is maybe the Browns who started off hot and kind or or the Ravens sputtering, you know, up down the stretch, All of a sudden there's a three weeks right, They get it together.
Or Lawrence, I'm gonna turn to you because you're a Colts fan.
For a guy like Philip Rivers, when you're older, a three week delay, you get stiffer.
You know what I mean? You're not your Your game form is gone, and suddenly he's coming out.
Why is he throwing ducks? Well, because Philip Rivers is an old saying with Tom Brady.
You know what I mean. They're old men.
Look, why do you think Brady looks weak in September and get stronger as it goes on because those guys take a little bit to build up in three weeks can really throw a lot of that off.
So, yeah, I think every league is a strict.
I think the NBA NHL did it the best.
But, yeah, there's definitely a gastric there.
And I'm happy to say that the Laker fans Lawrence if ultimately, the NFL finds itself with Let's say, I know you're a cold guy and they're having a heck of a season.
But let's just say if it ends up being the Kansas City Chiefs against the Green Bay Packers against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, even though there they were weird me out the last handful of weeks, I can't quite get a beat on what they're about entirely.
But if it ends up being Kansas City, Green Bay, does that get it closer to legitimizing it, Aziz, long as it's, you know, the finish line.
Not necessarily the journey of how you got there or well, you still look at it to raise point about.
If you did it the best you could like the MBA NHL did you could say aspect.
Maybe, maybe not.
You know, we can at least take it on face value pretty closely.
Will you look back at the playoffs and start to dissect? Well, what teams were playing strong going into the playoffs? What teams were playing week and how did there first couple of rounds of the playoffs look for the NFL? Engage on how you judge what the end product is.
I might end up having a little bit of an Asterix, especially a raise point.
You know, they end up having to play a week 18 because a two week to week by for the first place teams is a huge advantage.
Unless you're on a hot streak like what race saying you're on a hot streak.
You don't want that by it all, you know, let alone two weeks.
But if there's not a week 18 then and teams and they level out and they perform equally, I don't like the Asterix being applied to it.
However, I get what Ray saying because of what Cova, 19, has effected in every sport across the world.
You kind of have to look at every sport this year in a different light than what you have in every year previous.
Now let's get our good.
So I can I throw one more scenario? You, Lawrence, though here's what I would have rather Here's what If if they're gonna add something or if we go into Adam, we go into your idea of like we go into a bubble.
So now you're talking at least a two week, three week isolation period make you know what I mean.
That gives time for anybody who's positive to not be positive.
So you're talking three weeks.
So what? The Steelers now gotta wait four weeks because they got the by like how? And that's actually the huge disadvantage for them.
Right? Here's what I'd want.
If you're gonna put a delay, you might as well change the rules.
Now you make it in 18 playoffs with No by you know what I mean.
So everybody is kind of starting that to me.
Okay, Now it's like, now there's no Well, the Steelers had to sit for four weeks.
They only to sit for three weeks.
This team got a game in.
Um, you know, they talked about it and look, I'm gonna compare back to soccer for a second.
I think It's right now the best example, the way because it was a little different because different leagues around the world were doing different things and they all had to play a tournament.
The one thing that they kept saying is the Germans have the advantage because they started a month earlier.
You know what I mean? Because they've kept their game.
So the time the champions, they came around, you have, like the French teams who hadn't played in months.
They like they were exhausted.
The Italian teams played 40 games in three weeks.
They're exhausted. English was exhausted.
The German teams who went to the finals in the semifinals were in pure game form.
You know, they were now mid season form, and they were the Onley League in mid season form.
A team like the Steelers would have a huge disadvantage with a buy or whoever or the you know, if it's the and imagine, the Saints have a by all, although old Drew Brees, after coming back from an injury that has to sit three or four more weeks if they're gonna put in a three week Bob because you know there's gonna look how long the MBA had to sit before they could actually start playing games and stuff.
Then I want to see a team in there, No by and you just running it.
And that's the way I like to see it go.
And then I could accept it a little bit more.
That's fair and listen to the issue.
And, you know, in soccer, when you get two Champions leagues and multiple games you're playing a week, then the schedule looks a little bit different.
But similarly to football in the US, like the time line between games is usually pretty consistent.
And that's what makes it a lot more difficult for sports like that to be able to mitigate.
Because you can't just shuffle something a couple days here a couple of days there.
You can't just switch a three game Siri's like in baseball over to another weekend.
Um, as we move into that, I will throw out this last caveat before we move into tomorrow's games.
They just exciting Oh my God, salivating over these matchups and I'll talk about something.
I spoke with Andy on on the one giant podcast this morning about that I have a problem with Thanksgiving thinking in general, but I will just say fighting games that we spent 30 minutes talking about Koven.
That's right, e.
I will throw this out in the background.
No need for responses, fellas, because this will strike to the core of the man.
You know you don't go, do you? Go back and put an asterisk on the year when Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa we're juicing the crap out of themselves and that impacted wins and losses for different teams that made or didn't make the playoffs or, you know, they go back to the Alex Rodriguez.
You know, I was a Yankee fan growing up.
You know, everyone knows that he was on steroids when he helped the Yankees win a championship.
You don't take, you know you don't go back and diminish it for everything.
Now I understand this is a league wide thing, and it impacts a lot of different facets.
But you can go through a lot of sports and a lot of seasons and talk about specific issues.
Even talk about Pete Rose has been banned from baseball.
They say, Oh, they always played his heart is that's fantastic.
You can't guarantee that he was or wasn't or what it may have been any of those things.
You start to bring them up and you can really start to break down.
What is the foundation, or even just talk about refereeing, Right, man? Remember that season when the referees were as bad as they've ever been? Remember the year when they tried Thio implement a new rule when it came to offensive pass interference and realize God, that was awful.
We took it out immediately the next season and stop talking about is if it never existed, like those are all the things that you could go back and dissected away.
Then you could just start picking it out and say, Unless you're going to do this thing, I need every player in every league with 100% healthy.
No injuries, best roster, best lineup.
And that's how I know who the true champion would have been.
Listen, that's a little bit hyperbolic, to say the least.
Very hyperbolic, because it's a it's not. It's not.
It's your I get your point, and I accept your arguments, but it's the best that we don't know.
That's why we don't dwell on it.
I just Yeah, that's food for thought thing.
When you start to think about certain years in certain sports, absolutely there.
The year in the NBA when what's his name got nailed for? For for point. Shave the referee.
You what I mean, right? Absolutely.
You could definitely have those arguments.
I just think that when you take a game like football, that was always the same.
And you start changing schedules.
And on Sunday of Tuesday games and guys were playing Tuesdays and Sundays, and now you're taking a three week break before the playoffs.
It's a little bit different than a bunch of guys juicing Well, And by the way, this is how you know the NFL hasn't been legitimate in some time.
Because once you started doing Thursday night football games, that was it.
You started crumbling the integrity of the sport from word one.
Let's talk about Adam's problems with Thanksgiving.
The Detroit Lions.
Why do I have to watch them every year? Why do I have? Yes, Lawrence, I talked. I said so.
No, listen, listen.
I talked about this with Andy, and he gave me, you know, he gave me some push back this morning on it, too, and I get it right.
They are a cornerstone franchise.
They've been around forever.
It's a part of the tradition.
You get toe watch them show all the same.
Barry Sanders highlights that air.
Great toe watch.
And also I don't care anymore.
He hasn't played in the league in quite some time.
If you want to tell me that this is about Detroit doesn't get a lot of national coverage and this is their opportunity in the spotlight.
Maybe you could take that argument.
I disagree with that anyway.
Then you could also say, You wanna have these highlight matchups? Well, you better not be rolling out the Houston Texans against the Detroit Lions.
You better give me Green Bay.
You better give me Minnesota Vikings.
You better give me Chicago Bears.
At least make it a grudge match.
Unfortunately, they are doing that.
Tomorrow just happens to be out of my division NFC East, where you're talking about two teams with three wins.
So you know, if you're going to set up these matchups for Thanksgiving, they better has some type of punch to them.
Beyond the idea of here is the tradition of what we do, because the choice been bad for a long time.
And if anything, you should be doing it.
If you want to take a bad team and Detroit is a bad team this year, then you might as well give me the Jacksonville Jaguars.
There's a team that doesn't get national coverage a lot.
Put them in the spotlight.
So give me, by the way, why don't you flex the charges into the into the Thanksgiving game this year? At least you have Justin, Herbert and exciting rookie quarterback who's been showing you something.
Why am I stuck watching this? Lawrence? Go ahead, explain Detroit.
I'm in a pass of the Lawrence because him and Joe almost killed me when I brought this point up the other day.
Detroit's If it wasn't for Detroit, you probably wouldn't have Thanksgiving football.
That's why, because they're the ones that started it.
They we have Thursday night football now we have Thursday night, but but But still it was.
What I'm saying is back in like 1934.
You know, Detroit, the owner of Detroit was like, You know what? I want to play a football game on Thanksgiving.
Hey, we're willing to do this.
They talked another team into doing it with him, and they created this.
This tradition that's been going on ever since then.
And I think that, Hey, you know, that's that's kind of Ah ah, throwback to that organization.
Hey, you know, you started this tradition.
You're in this tradition now.
To your point, should it be a grudge match or something like that? Yes.
Um, Chicago and Detroit.
I've played Thanksgiving 18 times, 18 times in the history of the NFL.
That's the kind of thing that I want to see.
I completely agree this whole Detroit versus Houston thing where they play once every four years.
Don't put that in there.
I want to see Detroit in Chicago, Detroit in Green Bay.
You know something of that nature.
That's that's what I want to see.
E still feel that Detroit should be that team there and Thanksgiving because it's something that me and my father have done since I was a small child.
Wait for thanks.
How How dare you, Lawrence? How dare you, Lawrence, Don't pull out my heart a heart. Detroit.
All right, listen, listen ahead.
John Madden is the one who ruined the Thanksgiving Day game, holding a problem.
That's what Turkey like.
But what's happened now is is see, before, nobody wanted to play on Thanksgiving. Detroit.
You have the bag people to play Detroit on Thanksgiving.
Now it's become a thing. Players.
You hear the players when they interview them.
They all dream about playing in the Thanksgiving game, being the top player and getting to eat the you know, the turkey leg and be a part of that thing.
Teams are now vying to be a part.
That's why you get Houston.
Because when is Houston gonna have a chance to be there when they only play one of these one of these two teams, either Dallas or Detroit every four years? Um, the Thursday night game to me on Thanksgiving means nothing, because it's just Thursday Night football that happens to be on Thanksgiving.
That's something I get to watch every week, the tradition of the game of, you know, the one o'clock, the 40 clock on a Thursday.
Guys, I'm Canadian, my dad.
I hope he's not listening because we've gotten good.
But my dad and I didn't get along when we were younger, and we went through a very bad stretch where I thought I'd never talked to my father again.
But the only time I ever got alarm my dad used to pull me out of school since I was a little kid on Thanksgiving.
We watch the Macy's Day parade in the morning, Um, and then we would watch football all day and the only time like it's one of my only memories of, like my dad.
You what? I mean, some of the same is Lawrence.
Um, so I have to see Detroit.
No, I can see any two teams.
I just love to watch football, you know? But I get the tradition piece of It's the Cowboys.
Um, they used to be good when they played a lot of these Thanksgiving games and now, unfortunately, built the tradition.
I don't know integrity, this shield, you know, we'll keep some sort of tradition alive.
Well, and that's fair.
And I'll sidetrack just for a second.
My father, who worked in New York City, you know, his entire his entire career occasional Thanksgiving's go up super early the night before you go into the city and you can stand there and watch as they inflate all of the Macy Day parade balloons.
And it's actually cooler than even being there.
And, you know, some massive crowd watching the actual parade happened the following day.
So yeah, alright, fine fathers.
We all got sucked into it.
Um, are they still having that this year? I I'm sure the parade will still go on, you know, But I don't.
It will probably be televised and not heard.
There's gonna be There's going to be repeats of floats and then live performances in studios, but nobody around.
You know, this is this is the first year I've sending my kids to school on your guys.
Thanksgiving usually pull them out to have kept that tradition alive.
I took the day off, but I they I said to them, No, you know, no, I asked him.
I told him the parades not on like it's not a live parade, and it's it's, you know, we usually what we do is we go to my parents place.
We watch the parade we my my mom, makes breakfast. We lunch.
We're not going to my parents place this year.
They're both kind of like it's kinda just today.
Then we're just just just go to school, you know, like it's so unfortunately for the railroad family.
But now the other thing I'll say is and you mentioned right teams were buying now to play on Thursday.
This is where again.
Now I understand the tradition, and I can I can appreciate that.
But then I think you have to figure out the way to do it so that, yes, Houston should be able to showcase their now find them their grudge match, right? If you want to do it with Detroit, always there, then I think you have to.
And there's more than teams just inside of the NFC North, right? You can find other good battles, keep it in the NFC, still makes it a little bit more enticing.
Keep it with some other historic rivalries they've had, maybe always go with historic teams from the NFL.
You could go New York football giants.
If you want Thio, you can even maybe, uh, Green Bay Chicago.
Those guys, they're kind of stalwarts there as well you know you can't go Houston Oilers because they packed their bags and left.
Um, but, you know, if you try to keep a traditional that sense, then I guess lean into that a little bit more now. They did it.
We lost the Ravens Pittsburgh Steelers game, and obviously that would be grudge match rivalry game right to your point.
Still, Thursday Night Football.
You keep it alive with the Cowboys and the Washington football team.
Let's table it for a minute.
Are there any expectations around either of these games? I mean, this is remotely interesting at all from either matchup, outside of the fact that it is gonna be Thanksgiving.
Obviously there are.
Implications in the NFC is like this.
This is This is a crucial game from a Giants fan perspective.
We want to see Dallas lose this game because that gets them out of our way.
It gives them another loss in division, were three and two in divisions, so there are implications for the NFC East.
But let's start with Detroit.
Let's start with historic.
Uh, it doesn't matter for Houston.
No, and it's unfortunate, but I mean, I think we can all agree to that.
Houston has grossly underperformed.
What are expectations for this year? And this could have been a big game for Houston.
I would also go a Sfar as they're not grossly underperformed.
But Detroit has underperformed.
What I think we expected, that they could have done so.
This could have been an inflammation.
This could have been a game.
If things went the way we thought it could have went, we could have been like, what a game? Both these teams, you know.
You got Houston fighting with the Colts and the Titans and the and the N F C R A f C South.
You got Detroit fighting for a playoff spot.
Now it's You got two teams and it.
Detroit with a one last week, I would have argued that they're still fighting for a playoff spot that losses.
Basically, it's end of them.
We know that Houston's out of it.
I have no expectations.
Actually, I'm cheering for Houston, um, the rest of the way.
I want Houston the wind flat out because they Miami Dolphins have their draft pick and every game they win.
I watched that draft pick it a little bit higher and higher.
I think its ninth now, uh, it was sixth before, so I'm really become a big Houston Texan fan, as I hope that they win, and I think they should be Detroit.
Um, I am now ready to say, and it's unfortunate because I thought he did.
I wasn't a hater here in New England, like a lot of Patriot fans, but Matt Patricia could go down as one of the worst coaches in NFL history.
It has been, Yeah, that's that.
That's an interesting where to go, because it has been progressively brutal, right? It's only gotten worse there.
And, by the way, Lawrence, let's get your take on on Patricia as a head coach in general.
But also, this has been brutal, and you mentioned it four and six now for Detroit.
Could have been better.
Could have won that game that yet you had Stafford.
Unfortunately, with injuries, you had holiday deal with injuries.
You took over and then immediately had a concussion after going protocol for that.
So they've been hit.
Unfortunately, start with the coach Lawrence, But then then I do want to get to a couple of there were like some very brief light rumors around holiday at the trade deadline and because he's gonna coming up for a contract here and then Matthew Stafford, like, do they deserve to be a free Matthew Stafford campaign from Detroit, where they just get him out of there? Because he still has plenty, plenty left? And I feel like he's the closest content I can think of to it currently to an Aaron Rodgers, where if you put him in a different place, it could have been a different.
And I'm not saying he's the same right.
Not the same talent, but like he has all the same natural skill sets and baseline tools that he should have.
She should be so much more.
He should regard it so much more highly around the NFL than he is.
It's funny you mentioned Aaron Rodgers because Aaron Rodgers was on the pat.
McAfee took show yesterday and he brought up uh, they was talking about no look passes and things that quarterbacks just you know, don't do and errands like, you know, the best player I've ever seen.
Do that stuff. It's Matt Stafford.
Matt Stafford is one of the most gifted quarterbacks I have ever seen.
And this is Aaron Rodgers talking about it, right? And if he's saying that, that that's that has some pull to it.
I think that, um, I mean Stafford's played this year like you said, with injuries he was on Cove it.
He was on that covert list for a while this year.
And, hey, it looked like at the beginning of the year with to raise point, which is why a few of us was like, you know, the Lions looked like a playoff team this year before the season started, they did things that looked like to really put some weapons around Matt Stafford.
And then Patricia screwed everything up and and and and how we, uh his play calls the personnel he put on the field, how we handled things on and off the field.
I think I think Patricia may end up getting this.
This is kind of him and Matt that I think those are the two guys in that division that are looking at some serious hot seats right now.
Could I also talk about Matthew Stafford for a second to and I think that not enough people realize 14 months ago his his wife had a tumor removed from her brain.
They gave birth in June to a child with underdeveloped lungs that was fighting for its life in the hospital.
Thank God that the baby's okay.
Um, and yet this guy has just can't.
He was on the co vid list.
He's dealt with injuries.
Um, and yet to me, he's been the consummate professional this season, and I agree with you out on there needs to be a free Matthew Stafford somewhere because put him in this.
Such a put him in New England.
You know, let next year when Belichick has money and you can go by receivers, God let him in.
Newton put him somewhere, put him in in in Tampa.
When Brady retires after this season because he realized he can't do any, put him in New Orleans when breezes gone, put him somewhere where he has a chance toe win.
Because you've taken one of the I think what would have been seen as one of the greatest talents of our generation and wasted him in Michigan? Yeah, I'm more than happy.
The Colts gave, uh, the lions of first round pick for him.
I would have no complaints on the same in New England, Even if they had, like the 12th pick.
I would give up a first round for Matthew stuff for three or four years of Matthew Stafford, well, and think about it to because right now in the current contract that he's on, it drops down to 34.
He's in the 25 to $35 million range on his contract.
Look around the landscape of the league.
That's a bargain for the quality.
The quarterback that you're going to get there so and listen.
He'll be 35 by the time his conduct currently runs out.
There's a 2021 out for them where they would take on a massive $24 million debt cap hit.
Obviously, Detroit's not going to just do that, but but shy of that move.
It just if you're going to rebuild right, like push the let's push the rebuild button and I know right when we started off with this wouldn't really go too deep being a guy that I look at as someone who really dives inside and I know Lawrence You as well with the film studies.
What is it about Patricia that has been so ****ing to his coaching tenure? Because there's been other coaches in Detroit, right guys that are necessary, regarded as being some of the worst in the league who haven't had success there? It almost seems like that's where coaches go to not be successful.
But what specifically have you seen from him that tells you this guy just does not get it at the head coaching level? Was it was it slave that left the team this year? That is correct, and and he came out and said that map.
Patricia is an awful person, he said.
I'm not even talk about him as a coach.
He's just a novel human being.
Do you know what name came to my mind as soon as he said that? Josh McDaniels, Because it's exactly what they said about him in Denver and couldn't wait to run his ass out of Denver.
Bryan Flores went to Miami and his Bryan Flores from what I'm seeing, and Bill O Brien did the same thing in Houston as a just, and I mean it was it's been in all.
It's been awful in Houston, right? Even in the good times, it's been bad in Houston.
You can't be Bill Belichick.
You're not Bill Bill, Bill Belichick's and a whole.
He admits he's an A hole, but Bill Belichick cares about his players, right? Nobody's ever come out and said, Bill Belichick's a bad person.
They say he's aloof.
They say he's emotionless, but they never say is a bad person.
This whole cove in 19 things, his players really went too bad for him and said, No.
Our coach just showed us how much he's already told us.
I don't care about winning football games.
I care about your safety.
I mean, you know what I mean.
Slaves coming out and saying Patricia's an awful human being.
That means he went in there and he belittled, and there's a way to be little in a motivating way.
And there's a way there's a way that you could be little a player as a player, but when you start belittling them as people, it's a completely different animal and I could see Patricia going and doing the Bill Belichick thing.
I could go get any I could go get Johnny F.
In Foxboro to come in here and throw that ball.
But I think Patricia took it to a different map.
Patricia Level that went beyond the Belichick and you start losing your O.
So what did he do? He brought in all the old Patriots players and what's happening.
None of the trey Flowers went from one of the best defensive ends in the league to okay, Jamie Collins went from having a bounce back year last year to head butting referees and being thrown out. Drawn.
Harmon, who's a great safety.
He's a relevant on the field, and you can't replicate what happens in New England.
You have to make your own.
That's why Miami is gonna be successful to Bryan Flores because he's Bryan Flores.
I'm sure he's taking lessons from Belichick, but he's being Bryan Flores in Miami.
What I was gonna say, Lawrence, is that when you leave when you leave New England, you're supposed Thio.
It seems so obvious, and by the way I'll give I love Joe Judge.
I love what he's coming to New York, because by the way, what he took was, you know, not only just from learning right, being an offensive line coach there as well.
We now hear he's getting involved with that line and helping improve it.
Etcetera, firing a guy who's clearly has his own issues with his ego getting checked, coming in the door.
But he said, a standard he has been taught.
He's also been personal with the players.
Like it seems like Joe Judge.
I don't wanna point thio intellect here, but it's both the X's and O's and how you execute on the field.
And then the personality piece.
Yes, you can do.
You can do the Bill Belichick to the media, but behind closed doors, he's a totally different person.
That's what everyone started to learn of last handful of years is what you're getting at.
The press conference is not who he is behind closed doors players with his team and almost seems it almost seems ironic that a guy like Patricia or a guy in McDaniels would be there for all of that.
Leave there and somehow Onley hold onto the attitude piece.
The bravado piece, right? Like that's the weird thing that I can't wrap my head around with these guys and I'd be Lawrence before you talk about it.
I just wanted the Enforce, the Joe Judge point.
I have been a group chat with a bunch of Patriot fans, and we got into a deep conversation yesterday, and we have all concluded that the biggest loss of this season wasn't a player.
It was losing Joe Judge because our special teams has been terrible.
Like we went from having 10, 15 years in a row of having the best special teams in the league to just We can't get close to a punter.
We can't make a tackle.
Guys air getting 15 20 yard to return.
We're not pinning at the two yard line.
Being gone has been a huge impact on the Patriots this year, so he knows his X's and O's and for a bad team in the Giants.
You know, the last handful of seasons, one of the things that we've looked at, it been like Hey may seem like a small thing, but look at our special teams, right? Look at the look at the fine details of this roster.
It's all happening theater tension to details there, and it feels like it's directly coming from Joe judge.
So, Lawrence any any? Just any last minute takeaways on that on the coaching piece of this before we get away from it.
Lawrence is always Lawrence is always just relatively so calm, so even keeled.
He's ready to get into it.
He's a well informed individual, highly focused on football and also doesn't rise too high or too low.
My hand was just off screen. Not too high, Not too low.
Right there in the beauty part of the curve.
I've seen Lawrence get mad one time, and it was the funniest thing in the world.
But that was gonna fly.
Not that I was just out this moment.
Are you kidding me? The bride on his face, eh? Sorry. Go ahead.
Um, no, I don't remember who it waas, but someone just hired former coach, offensive line coach from the Colts and the Miami Dolphins Coach Bhuj.
Um, Coach Gooch when he came in to the cold.
Oh, that's That's the giants, by the way.
He was brought in as a consultant because Joe Johns is spending too much time with the offensive line during practice weeks and Then it was Columbo who, as we all know, by the way, Ray football guy What? What? What can't you dio When the coach tells a play or something and you're a coordinator or line coach, you don't get to turn and say No, I don't think that's the way this should be.
That's where he went out.
And now Gooch is gonna just is gonna feather this line here for the rest of the season.
Well, let me give you a little story about Coach Huge, Okay? There's a reason why he's not on the Colts, um, anymore.
And, uh, in 2018, when he came in, the offensive line became one of the best in the And that's when the Colts offensive line went from one of the worst toe, one of the best and it just performance wise.
And everybody want to lay it on on Gooch.
But there was 1/7 round draft pick.
Den fell good, lost his, lost his brother in a shooting during the season.
He wanted off for a while.
He wanted to go home, be with his family.
He went home with with this family.
Now this is tell tale.
This is what was said by by Denzel Good.
It was not confirmed by Gucci, it all or any of the other office.
But apparently when he got back boots told him, You will never start in the NFL again because you did that because you went home, okay? And I've heard I've heard that about good, by the way, because if you look at his track record, he basically has one.
Sometimes two year stints, places and I my, my hope is your one because we've heard positive things around Logan Ryan, who had issues with his wife this year, Joe Judge immediately said, Go, do we need to do if you need to, etcetera.
I think this is a Band Aid for the Giants for the remainder of the season.
Not the long term, but continued well, Denzel Good asked to be traded, actually asked to be let go.
He didn't wanna He was 1/7 round pick, a diamond.
No one knew anything about him.
And he was on, you know, a great offensive line midway through the season and just straight up, I don't wanna play for this guy.
I want I want let go on and the head coach and Chris Ballard said, Fine.
You know, we'll give you what you want.
He was picked up by the Raiders, and now he's a starting offensive linemen for the Raiders right now, playing very, very good football.
Can I ask you a T end of the season, coach? Good.
Out of nowhere, let's let go.
Well, you know my Giants for three and seven.
We're trying to have a bit of a groundswell around some positivity here.
What's the deal with the bucket of water? It's thanks.
You know, I just understand we're heading into a holiday and you want to tell me this could be the breakdown of my offensive line of my team.
Can I tell you? My biggest fear? Put the New York Giants right now and I said this to my group chat the other day.
I said watching the Giants line falter when it should be getting stronger with the talent they have.
I said, with the Patriots offensive line staying consistently strong, I said, Freaking Scarnecchia is gonna come out of retirement, is going to sign with the Giants and go Health Joe Judge for a couple of years.
I can just feel it like I could just feel the pit in my stomach that Dante's gonna be your next offensive line coach time, Ray.
Let it wash over you let it wash over you.
I will say that Coach Gooch is a no nonsense, hard nose offensive line coach that knows what he's doing.
It's just there is that stain on him. Well, okay.
And by the way, I'll tie it all together.
This is the difference between being Adam, Jason being a great offensive coordinator, not being suited to be a head coach.
This is Matt Patricia being really good working underneath Bill and not so great when you're the head of this snake, right? Like this is what we talk about with coaches.
Sometimes you need to know what your lane is and know where you're best suited.
Even if you're Gooch, right? Not that there's ever rumblings of him rising up coaching ranks, but I can come in.
I can help rebuild your line.
And also, I know that I'm not long for this particular position with this particular team.
So I can still have a good career because we know the results air there and we'll see what happens with New York, certainly before before we close out anything else anybody wants to cover here Before we get out of here, I I just I cannot believe in offensive line coach of all of all coaches, I told the guy he's never going to start in the NFL again, as if he has any impact on whether an offensive line coaches any impact of whether a guy is going to start or not.
Well, yes, sir, exact words were.
You'll never start on this team while I'm the coach regard.
Was Pagano the head coach of the time? Yes, that's why because it would have been Dungy or right they would never would have released him.
And they would have said, Oh, that's what he said. Hold on.
You know, I mean a conversation because the offensive line coach is about after water Boy.
It's offensive line coach make decisions.
Who starts on Sunday? So before you got it right, Because I know you, you've You've often talked about being an offensive lineman in your playing days.
The thing that the Giants did here in this switch, they said you go back three weeks, Joe, Judge he knows what's the weakest part right now for our team.
It's the offensive line.
Starts spending time during the week with him, as head coaches do on a week to week basis.
The most interesting things in me was around Colombo.
He comes from from Dallas, where you drafted High, had a lot of talent and he's regarded as being more of a Ra Ra guy, right? Maura Maura, Va.
Hey, let's zoo really dig in here is a former offensive lineman himself.
And you can do that when you have the natural talent.
When you have all these young guys there, what is the mist? Is it a mistake? I'll put it that way that they said that Andrew Thomas.
He comes in once Joe Judge gets in there.
He basically says, Go back to your Georgia technique.
Let's start there and worry about the other things later.
Is it an enormous failing of Colombo to come in the door with a rookie? And at the very least, you wanna bring a new techniques? Fine.
But when you see him struggling the way he was early in the season, isn't it not? I mean, it's a massive failing to not say, Hey, let's get back to ground zero here and worry about building up from there because that's weeks on end where you're seeing this kid look like he doesn't even understand the position.
And that can't possibly be true.
Based on what we saw.
A college for three years, I've played in a three point stand as a left guard in my senior year of high school.
They put me to a standing as a standing guard.
Um, that's completely different. Footwork.
That's completely different.
Blocking that's completely different leverage.
For three years, I learned how to come up.
Now I got to come down or I got to go forward.
It's a completely different game altogether.
Um, I played that for about three games and we showed up to practice and they had me and the other guard go back.
Two or three points stand, and what they did was they slowly started working standing.
By the time I got to college, I could stand in block.
You know what I mean? Um, yeah.
No, that's awful.
You got to start with the strength C.
And this is Joe.
Judge, this is this is he.
He's now taking the good parts of Belichick, right? This is what Bill Belichick doesn't.
Why? I believe he's the greatest coach.
Forget the champions. Forget this.
Ah, lot of coaches try to hide weaknesses.
You know what I mean? We gotta hide weaknesses.
Politics, like everybody has a weakness.
Everybody does something bad.
We're going to design you to your strength.
You know what I mean? So if you're good with this technique, let's start there.
And now we'll start working about how do we improve on this? Let's start building our schemes around.
Hey, he can only play out of the three.
Hey, you know what? Never have him open up the four Gap, because he can't.
You know what I mean? Like, it's he has to play inside.
Don't have him coming outside.
There is little different things.
Play to the strengths.
So any time we want to go to the left, we gotta pull a guard because we need to help Thomas on the on the left side.
You know what I mean? Whatever route your he's the left.
Left tackle, right? Yeah.
You know, pull a guard to help him on the left side.
I love that judges doing that because you got to do with what's comfortable to use.
I'm telling you, the standing Guard linebackers were blowing by me, you know what I mean? Because I had no idea how to block them.
I had no idea how to get in my position.
And now this kid's going in the NFL, where he's facing the best interior linemen.
He's facing the best outside rusher.
He's trying to pick up safety blitzes and they got him and the big thing with With with Thomas.
What they did was is they put him to a double step leg hold, which is a very different piece of footwork.
That's what makes him slow.
And I talked about Thomas.
That's what disappointed me the most because he has great footwork.
But his footwork has been awful this year.
He's getting tied up, he's getting twisted around.
He's losing himself on the field, and a lot of that has to do with because of this step.
He's stepping in the wrong places, putting him back to what he's comfortable with.
Will they give him confidence? Worst thing, but an offensive lineman.
You give up a sack if you can't shake that off.
Your day is done.
You might as well go sit on the bench because you're poor quarterbacks gonna get destroyed the rest of the game because your confidence just shot assumes your confidence shot.
The first thing to go is your feet.
That's just so good to hear Ray talk offensive line.
I love I Did I get talking? All That's why I love when you guys talk.
I know it massively, but I love when you guys talk because you're the only podcast that talks heavily.
I know Lawrence mentions the offensive line.
You guys get into deep conversation.
That's why I love the one giant podcast.
We're in the weeds on it.
All right, listen, let's get out of here and just picked these games real quick.
You got the Texans, you got the lion's.
It is going to be, uh, Texans given three over under 51 a half.
What he got, man, I'm actually kind of I think Matt Stafford versus the Sean watching.
This could be a fun game to watch.
This could actually be a fun game to watch.
Don't expect much defense in this game, but it could be a fun game to watch.
Um, I got, believe it or not, I think the Texans, if it wasn't for the fact that the injuries they have, that's what I'm looking at.
My goodness, they're missing two of their biggest weapons on offense right now at the wide receiver position.
I gotta go with Lions on this.
I know, Ray, you want Houston toe win.
Do you expect him to? I gotta say, Shawn Watson played phenomenal last week.
He was pinpoint, accurate last week when they lost to the Patriots and people like what happened? I'm like, Honestly, D Shawn Watson, like sometimes the other team just plays better into Shawn Watson played better.
That being said, I think Randall Cobb is out for this game because he got banged up in the last game.
Can they do it again with just Will Fuller and, uh, and Brandon cooks and and I forget the tight ends name.
Maybe if Randall Cobb, If Randall Cobb is there, he's gonna be beat up.
That being said, I don't trust Detroit's defense whatsoever.
Um, I don't try to smack Patricia Matthew Stafford still dealing with some injuries.
Eyes gala day Playing this game Is Kenny Gallery playing? He's been downgraded health wise.
I think it's still up in the air as it stands right now.
Okay, then I'm taking Houston because I can't even see a shootout anymore.
They need gala day and it's not going to start.
I'm gonna put it up right now.
It's not gonna Stafford's fault that they lose this game, but I'm gonna go with Houston.
Yeah, um, DeShaun Watson is without Randall Cobb and Kenny Stills.
So for all of my belly aching to learn this point, man, keep this thing high.
That's exactly what I want in the background on Thanksgiving.
It's just like watching touchdowns, pop, watching the action and just watching a good game.
Alright, quickly over on the Washington Cowboys side of things over.
Under a meager 46 points plus three for Washington.
Ray, this is obviously the battle.
This is the big one.
Who do you got in this? You Are you on the side of the the RUC? The the heart felt story of Alex Smith back on the field playing football this year? Um, I'm happy for Alex Smith.
Don't get me wrong.
This is actually one that actually did pull at my heartstrings.
I was so happy to see Alex Smith and, like Alex Smith was a chief who embarrassed the Patriots on Monday Night Football.
Embarrassed us on Thursday Night Football when we're lifting the banner.
I have a deep hatred for Alex Smith, but a respect for Alex Smith as well, though, Um, but my hatred is completely alleviated with with what he went through in his comeback story.
That being said, I I secretly cheer for Washington a lot because they're full of Ohio State guys, right? Um, I gotta go with my boy chase.
I'm going Washington I'm going with the I'm going with the team and I was just reading the other day that it looks like they're going to stick with the football team.
I kind of really like that. That were just Washington.
You know what they should do? We'll get to your pick, Lawrence, and we did this on the podcast that we started French.
In this way, you should be pulling from soccer and go with Washington FC, just like Football club, then that like you start to market yourself that way, it actually isn't bad.
And then just communicate toe fantasy football leagues and, you know, outlets online that you don't want to break it down to the football team.
We can probably find a way to fix some of those algorithms on that.
And, Lawrence, go ahead.
I think this is gonna be a new interesting game.
Um, because Dallas showed that they seem to it.
They move some people around on their offensive line.
They look like they're a lot better.
They got Ezekiel Elliott back.
The red rifle seems to be back.
We'll see what happens there, but they don't have a defense.
And Alex Smith, the last time I checked the last time he played had one heck of a game against a team, you know, through the air.
So Dallas is going toe, have to really score some points, and they're gonna have to do it against this really good Washington defensive line.
I don't know what they could do it.
I think I'm gonna lean Washington as well.
Oh, you know what? Hold on.
Hold on. I'm going. Dallas.
What happened? Because I went Washington.
No, no, I just thought of it.
Nobody has Mawr player interaction, then a strength and conditioning coach in a fitness coach.
They spend the most time with players.
And I think this is a game where Dallas is gonna be playing with They're gonna be playing for him, and I think that they're gonna win on emotion.
You just guys elevate in those.
In those times, we've seen it happen.
Um and trust me, no coach spends more time with the player than those guys.
So those were really, really tight relationships.
That's the guy who takes care of their body that takes care of their meal ticket.
I'm sure that's a hurting locker room.
And I got a funny feeling they're going to come out flying this game well, in the division, I'd like to see Washington win to help the Giants case the front seven right off the edge there for that defense.
Young and hungry.
McLaurin, even Gibson out of the backfield there for them.
They got a nice set of compliments there in Washington.
But if it's to be on that piece of playing for a coach that they literally just lost.
I I can live with that.
Result of Dallas is going to get the W Everybody listen.
Enjoy yourselves. We're not gonna do too much of the piece.
You know where to find us.
You can follow us.
You can donate to us.
Enjoy the chat, get involved here on SportsCastr.
I will leave everybody with this very briefly.
I'm 35 on Friday on and for whatever it's worth with with a niece and two nephews now and with the way Cove it has been, uh, I find myself being a little bit more sentimental when it comes to holiday stuff.
So I'm appreciative and thankful for having my family be healthy.
I know people have been dealing with that kind of thing and not in the not in a positive way that I've been able to say so for anyone who has been dealing with that.
You know, you guys have my heart goes out to everybody in that regard, and I'm also Listen, I'm thankful to have gotten involved in I've been involved in sports caster news, MBA side of stuff for a long time over here, getting involved in the NFL, and meeting Lawrence and meeting Ray and meeting Joe and getting to do this kind of stuff and talk.
Football is a lot of fun for May I really enjoy it? And it helps in times like these to have something you can turn your mind off on.
So I'm just I'm thankful and grateful for that.
Lawrence, I hope you enjoy your Thanksgiving ray.
I hope you enjoy your day off and we'll be back again.

Thank you, Adam.
It's been a pleasure having you.
I'm thankful to to have met you two guys.
I'm also thankful that I just found out Adam's older than me.
That's even better.
I won't be 35 until August, so e give a little to the north.
No, but you know what Adam.
You nailed it on the head, Buddy Cove.
It was hard, and I I've never opened up about this publicly.
But you've got all sentimental, so I am.
Ah, I did not deal with Lock down.
Well, mentally, um, there's a lot of, you know, I've talked about it.
I'm a social worker and on top of dealing with my own mental health, I was dealing with other people's mental health, and I stopped dealing with mine, and I kind of just let it go away.
And I got into a really bad place and SportsCastr is what normalized me in that time and being on with you guys and and doing this and for the hour a night it was that it was me, Joe and Lawrence and Adam.
We met you when you popped on to talk about, ah, giant story prior to the and that was an hour that I wasn't thinking about being locked in my ba*****t and all my, you know, suicidal clients.
And and like I said, I never took care of my mental health.
And SportsCastr was kind of what helped me pull out of my funk.
So I'm thankful for you guys as well.
Man, I'm thankful for all of you guys.
I mean, the past couple of weeks for me, family wives have been a little bit difficult, but, uh, you know, I mean, like you said, Right way.
Here we do our job way talk with with each other before and after Generally are streams When we just kind of get things off of our chest.
We're here for each other.
Um, and if any of you guys out there who are following us and and have profiles and ableto get in the chat, you want to just say something, feel free, man.
