How you doing today? I'm doing good.
How you doing? Good man, Just I mean, it's not It's not cold.
You're trying just hopefully a state warm.
It's like 70 something out here in Houston, so hopefully can feel like this the rest of the day so I could get out and get you moving around.
Yeah, So you're You're one of the best scores in the country.
You have 18.8 points a game this year.
Talk about your success and how good you've been.
You've gotten better every single year of being at U.
S A, um you know, being here at U. T. S A.
You know, it's taught me something new.
Every year I try to come back.
You know, he's asked something to my game freshman year.
You know, I had to shoot a lot of shoot a lot of shots.
14 sop****re year.
I had to take that up a notch.
I had to, you know, step into a more leadership role and, you know, try to be more vocal, you know, get outside of myself and, you know, bring the team together and things like that.
So this year is you to bring it all together.
Everything I learned bring it all together.
So I have my little brother actually played in your conference.
He played the f i u last year. Name is Trey.
I'm sure you No, he is.
So Yeah, I actually, I actually you know what he thought about you Because you'll have some wars, you know, back then and he said, Like he said, he just a dynamic score.
He pretty much can do whatever you want him to do on the floor.
Because I remember it was a game.
I was supposed to come toe San Antonio, watch him play.
What? I couldn't because I was in school.
So I end up watching the game on a little link they sent.
And you was You was You was balling you were You were definitely killing them.
And I was like I said, I said I didn't really.
At the time, I had never really heard of you at the time.
Like a soft think.
You were a sop****re at the time, and I was I knew something was special about why would you want to see what you were developed into a year down the line? But, I mean, you've done very, very well for yourself.
You know, you last year, you and Jackson? Yeah.
Well, two of the bit will probably the best going backward in the country.
Guys averaged 45.
6 points per game.
Talk about the dynamic duo between you and him.
You know, every year, Like I said, we try to build something new and build more on top of you know what we did, like, previous years.
So, um, you know, we kept on trying to build on that, you know, now is more of a team thing.
You know, we didn't We weren't successful as a team as much as we want it to be. Right.
So this year, you know, we gotta bring the scoring aspect and we gotta bring the winds and as well, right.
So you say you're talking about, you know, bringing things together and working on things.
What is something that you've worked on with your game since the long overlay with doing covert? And what if something you've worked on going into this season? A lot of things that I worked on had to do with things off the court, you know, assed faras, you know, being more vocal, talking things like that and taking my recovery a little bit more serious, you know, getting into the eyes, tubs, watching more film, you know, trying to really lock in on my craft.
No, you know, out of all the time, you know, spent on the court, you know that stuff, but adding that, you know, extra aspect, you know, longevity in the end of the season, you know, having fresh leg taking care of your body, eating right, things like that.
So I tried to really take that to the next step during this quarantine.
Right? So you got having played I haven't played basketball on what, eight months? Roughly, You feel like Yeah, I know.
You guys are definitely dying to get back on the court.
I'm, you know, we started to watch.
It's just crazy because, you know, the NBA draft is yesterday, and I was like, ****, I've been scouting these guys for like a year and I was like, It's like like it was exciting to see, you know, see what guys were going.
But it was just like it's been.
It's literally been over a year just watching film.
And, you know, it's only so much film you can watch on the same guy, especially a freshman.
It's just like I can't watch.
I'm watching high school tape now, but yeah.
So you guys are expected to finish third in the Conference USA? What do you What do you guys have to do? You know, toe to pass time. I know you guys.
Definitely one of your senior.
You're one of the I think three seniors on the team.
You guys definitely wanna win the conference? Goto go to the tournament this year, go out with the bank.
So what do you guys have to do to improve on last? I think you guys were, what, 11 and 17.
I believe last years.
And what do you have to do, toe improve that we got a really come.
You know, we really gotta lock in on defense.
That's really the main focus that we had to do, you know, because last year we pretty much one of the best offensive teams in the country, like we was putting a note, you know, we were scoring that thing, but the way they they was going on way got to get that balance.
So once we lock in on his defense, you know, get some stops trying to get some kills.
Um, you know, that would be big for our team going into this ****.
Right? So talk about I know.
You know, a lot of people in this office is never transferred.
A lot of people were moving around, going from everywhere, everywhere.
Why did you not decide to train? Because for me, one that speaks more about your character because I know a lot of guys, you know, You guys were 30 13 and 19.
You have 18 points a game.
I'm sure schools everywhere, wherever we're all we're interested.
But you decided, You know, I'm finished where I started.
I'm gonna stay in San Antonio and finish this thing.
Why did you decide to transfer? Uh, you know, growing up like my parents always told me.
You know, you gotta do with what? You got a decision.
Whatever decision you make, you gotta make it happen.
Like, you know, it's It's never gonna be easy.
You know, if I would have went, if I would have went somewhere else, like I feel like, you know, it wouldn't have been It wouldn't have been any easier, you know, So with that being said, you know, I gotta I gotta make do with what I got.
I gotta make it out of here.
That's where I want to go When I first got here.
So e, I definitely I definitely respect because, you know, some guys they'll have a bad afternoon, that practice have a bad couple of games.
I'm no, it's like, Screw this.
I'm ready to leave.
But you know, you you stuck it out.
You know, you like you said, this is what you started.
You want to finish talk about, um, you know, you were very under recruited out of high school.
Clearly talk about playing with a chip on your shoulder.
You know how many how many offers that you have coming out of high school Coming out of high school? I had I had a few low major, mid major, all of many high major.
Yeah, interest, But they didn't really offer me.
That was kinda no decisive about me because I was a lot smaller when I was in high school.
Like e was like 63 1, 55 or 60.
Like no athletic, you know, nothing like just pure skill it could who, like and, you know, going into college.
I just had to get bigger to compete everybody.
So, like, I ain't always been taught.
I ain't always big.
Like when I was a freshman school.
Like I came in, like, 575814 Like, really little.
But I can handle it, though, Like nobody could running me quick.
You know what I'm saying? So, yeah, you know, that was everybody told me.
You know, man, just wake and you're gonna get tall.
You're gonna hit a growth spurt.
Yeah, you would like.
So, you know, eventually that ended up happening.
And then once I got to college like everything just took off trying to keep that going.
So sorry about playing with a chip on your shoulder.
You know, you came out of high school.
He said there wasn't that many schools recruiting.
You know, some people they could have taken that with a grain of salt, you know, no one really recruiting me.
I'm just, you know, go to school.
But you've gotten better every year.
Like I said, you're one of the best scores in the country talking about playing with a chip on your shoulder.
And what motivates you every day to get better in that grind? You know, just you tsa really took a chance on me.
You know, I feel like what the coaches was telling me.
I really believed in what they were trying to do, you know, because I was the last one to sign U T s A I was a late sunny, so I was coming in a Rod was coming in Another guard, Dion Lyle and transfer.
Yeah, transferred from juco.
Toby hey was a juco all American.
So all of them had already signed.
And then I was like, you know, and April I had signed my little, uh, intent.
So, like, you know, let's try to start something new.
Let's start our own thing instead of trying toe goto where it's our history.
Like, let's try to do our own thing and make some happen over here.
So, you know, that was kind of my thing, you know, start my own legacy instead, you know, trying to piggyback off away everybody else, but, uh, no, no, definitely.
That's what that come from? Sure.
You changed positions? I was your sop****re junior year from shooting at the park or whatever, say, last year, last year, last year, so people don't understand changing position just pretty much like night and day.
You know, you're going from playing off the ball a lot, you know, especially in college basketball.
It's all you know.
You're just shooting guard should be able to handle the ball, but you're going more into a porn guard role.
So you're expected the leader of the team getting guys open being this, you know, the main ball dominant guard.
Talk about the transition from going from that toe.
You know, porn darker people understand.
That's that's very different.
You're coming in from a guy Three years started, I think, believed before you're taking over his taking over his, we'll talk about the transition.
Um, the transition wasn't the transition wasn't too bad, you know, assed faras playing things like that, things like, you know, talking because I ain't always been a vocal guy like that.
Just do what I need to do.
So our team can win now.
I had to step into a role, you know, have to talk to this guy, you know, talk to this team, mate.
You know, how does he get going, right? How? You know what? What's gonna turn him on? The, you know, play harder on defense, You know, things like that.
So, you know, that was very new for me, Uh, especially, you know, trying to come out of my shell, right? Oh, what will you I was And how How hard was testing on you? You know, like you said you were in a you had a shell you were talking about.
How hard was he on you? Get on your the point of the team.
You have Thio lead.
I know what my school at Tech all porn guard we had last last year.
We have to kinda pull it out of him because he was really, really quiet.
He'd like to talk it also.
They really was, you know, on his case, every practice, every game, you know, you have to talk.
How hard was he on you? And how big of an adjustment was it for you to just adapt? You know, I guess rather quickly, right? Um, you know, just like you said I was, you know, a quiet dude.
You know, just handling my business, but no, he got on me, you know, He told me if we wanted to be a good team, then I had to, you know, take that leadership role.
And, you know, because the guy that came before me, they would have They were the leaders, you know, I didn't have to do.
All I had to do was put the ball in the hole. We're good.
So, you know, I had to do a little bit more.
He pushed me every day.
Really? He pushed me every day.
So what were some of the goals for the season? Only as a team, but for you personally.
Are there any goals that you said? Maybe you have, Like I know you have, like someone on your wall.
This is what you want.
This is what respect from yourself, but also from the team.
Um, for myself, it is not to have any regrets, you know? Just leave it all out on the floor, Do everything that I can, You know, I pray every day.
So that got a zoo.
Long as I don't have any rich and I don't take anything for granted.
I feel like that's my, That's my goal for the end of the season.
But at the team, you know, I feel like you know, we should.
We should win every game.
You know, That's my model.
Win every game when we get so as a team, as long as we, you know, stay locked in and play hard and do what we need to do.
After, like, way.
Have a good season this year.
Sure, you're a business finance major.
That's very young.
I know some finance major when I was at Tech that made it hard.
But you're not getting your also managing that, but also being a great basketball player before.
How do you talk about managing both? You know, after you know you don't know you doing well.
So how are you managing? Able to manage about being great in both areas of life? Uh, can you repeat that? E said.
Your business finance major, I said, talking about managing both, like being a great basketball player, you know, at night or in the afternoon, but also getting your studies.
And at the same time, business finance is a very tough major. I know.
Some business finance majors and I know I've seen them struggling.
You know, Bailey when he was in school.
So how are you able to do both at a high level? Really? I enjoyed finance.
You know, I'm glad that I have, um, finance for investment and things like that.
So I'm actually into stocks trading, you know, bonds and things like that.
So I'm actually already, you know, into things like that.
So, uh, you know, studying it is interesting to me.
So, you know, I take take the class is pretty serious, you know? So you know, eventually, when I dio for sure, that's a big That's a big part of respect.
When you leave, you go start making money and, you know, playing sports, and you definitely know how to manage.
Because you see a lot of guys they leave, They're being lied a couple of years and maybe struggling.
McCollum? He said was one in three NBA players or living paycheck to paycheck.
So you know, I see that all the time.
You see that all the time, You know, in the media and things like that.
So that's one of my That's one thing that my parents told me with growing up.
You know, like, you got to know how you got to know how to handle things like that.
Especially big lump sum of money, especially when he had had them.
So you gotta know how toe You gotta know how to handle it.
So you being from Dallas, I'm from Houston.
You know, when I was in high school at the time, this was graduating 2014 at the time Houston basketball.
In my opinion, I think it was the recruiting aspect of it was a lot better than what it has been.
But over the last, I guess, six years, it's switched.
Houston, it's It's bad.
It's a drought out here, you got a few kids are going the one.
But there's nowhere near what it used to be talking about being from Dallas and how proud you are that, you know, you see multiple guys like you have arterial.
Morris is a top recruit out there.
You have, um, some of those guys from Jordan washes up their lead door.
Some of those guys out in that area talking about, you know, the basketball landscape in Dallas and how much better.
It's gotten over the last couple of years, man.
We got a lot of guys a lot of time.
Yeah, even watching the draft last night.
You know, Maxie came, man, are any man Dallas show? You know, even my little brother.
You know, at Richard on it too.
So, no, it's a lot of talent in Dallas, and it's just gonna keep on growing.
You know, Iron sharpens iron.
So long as they keep on grinding and competing against each other, they only gonna get better.
And it's just gonna keep on getting better.
E you being from there? I'm assuming you played against RJ and Maxie, huh? Yeah, I played against, eh? So what do you What do you think of how happy you for them.
You know, you saw Mexico into the Sixers and R J is going to the Nuggets.
How happy are you for them If you reached out to them yet or have you talking about, you know, playing against them in high school? It is actually a funny story, man.
Um, when I think I was, I think I was a senior in high school, and I think RJ was at, uh, little M.
I think you had a little e way.
Ended up beating him.
Whatever in the little tournament.
Now he could who he could who? You know, he was getting off.
He was getting off.
Forget he got off of this.
Okay? Now you could who he could Who? I think we played against Maxie, my senior as well.
I think they knock this out in the first round.
Uh, you know, Postseason.
The first round, man, I was sick, but they was hoping against it, though.
I ain't gonna They hope. Nice.
No, I mean, yeah, I'm asking both of both of, you know, super times.
I would like to see because, you see, with the Sixers, they have with Zaire Smith heat from the Dallas police from Garland.
You have Maxie also from the Dallas area up there where it's somebody else on the team.
I can't remember who, but somebody else on the team is from dollars area.
So it's good to see you know, the Dallas area.
They're getting their shine.
They definitely putting putting guys in the league.
Houston, Hopefully Houston.
We can try to catch back up because right down, which is is what? We got some guys in the league, of course, but it's looking rough out here for us right now.
You know eso this season you're one of three, I think.
Three seniors on the team.
Yeah, three seen Major bun and, uh uh, Luca.
So talking about you know, you guys being leaders, you like only three seniors on the team, you know? So what do you got? What do you preaching to your guys every day, you know, as leaders.
And what do you got preaching to the rest of the team? Um, you know, just just not have any regrets, man.
This is potentially senior year, so, you know, just did not have any regrets.
Leave it all out on the floor, play hard, You know, every possession, because every position council us.
Now, um, last year, we had the target on our back.
Now I feel like you know, that target on our back no more since the season that we had last year.
So now we've got to get that chip back on our shoulder show, show the other teams how we come right your first game of the year.
Y'all play against Oklahoma, you know, there, they don't know that they'll probably finishing the bottom part of the big 12.
Maybe that's a game where, you know, you really can't kind of set the set the tone.
So what do you What type of what do you got doing to prepare for them? You got a couple of really Not even I got, like, a week.
Not even You got, like, six days.
So what do you guys doing? Preparing for them.
And if you see anything going into the strategy for the game, um, you know, we this would be, uh would this be my fourth time planning to start to see you? And so, you know, way all got each other number.
You know, I haven't seen each other.
We all don't play again.
So I don't think it's gonna be any anything extra***ant, you know, trying to, you know, strategically be the other team.
But, you know, as long as we go in and, you know, play our basketball, that's that's what I That's what I'm trying to do.
Go in and play you tears like basketball.
I mean, you know, you were playing against day beyond harm.
He's also a Dallas guy.
Uh, he's gonna be It's gonna be It's gonna be a tough matchup knowing for you, but also for him as well.
If you've done anything scouting against him since you know this offseason, studying his game and preparing for him because he's one of the better younger guards in the country.
And obviously you're a big time star and you to say is, Well, I'm definitely excited for the matchup and I wanna I wish I could go to the game.
But this whole covert thing is just ruining everything.
But I love to go see that I'm a definite try to go up there and catch a couple of games That, you see, is that this year we all are allowing fans.
Yeah, yeah, he's a good player, you know? He's a good player.
Way played against him last year.
E I played against him, so it ain't gonna be nothing.
No, e, which is not for sure for sure.
So, like I said, I'm definitely good luck to you with all your success this year.
I'm you know, which is the best you know what to look for.
I'm sure you're gonna have a great season And maybe at the end of year, and you guys make it to determine we can have this conversation again and talk about you know, all the other records and things you're gonna break this year.
We'll definitely appreciate you for having man no problem.
Have a good day. Have a good day of practice.
