Come on. Yeah, Mhm.
Good morning. Sorry, This is not the best.
Light it all, but good morning, everybody.
Welcome back to SportsCastr News with that Brooks riding solo today.
Um, where do I even begin today? We had a lot of things come out last night, just like really once the sun went down here on the East Coast.
First off, I would like to say that way in the first NewsBreak on SportsCastr with this Chris Paul T o K C thing.
I'm halfway kidding about this.
Um e mean for those of you guys that watch this show semi regularly.
Andi, you've been watching it for a little while.
You may remember back in the summer, and me and Adam are Brick talked a little bit about Chris Paul destinations, and Phoenix came up on DNA.
Now, here it is.
Today, um, you have a full a full scale rumor about him possibly going to Phoenix.
I mean, I'll get a little bit into kind of the draft stuff because I think like it's it's just it's starting to feel a little bit riel that we're getting into the trade part of this offseason.
and that the draft as well.
But, um, no, I mean, this this Chris Paul thing is interesting.
I think it makes a lot of sense for them to pursue, you know, to pursue Chris.
Paul, you know, you can kind of build a little bit of, ah, Houston Rockets light and in a lot of ways, you know, really just improve on certain positions.
So, you know, upgrading that Rubio spot and just getting somebody, that is, I mean again, like the furthest version of Rubio possible.
You know, a pass first guard, but also can create for himself Excellent defender, You know, he really is.
He's just a completely fully optimized Ricky Rubio, which is like a weird comparison, but in a lot of ways, they are, like, sort of similar in terms of like, what they are is an outline just Chris Paul and Ricky Rubio.
So I think it's a I think it's a smart deal on day, and I hope they do it.
I mean, they were just fine without Kelly, you break.
You're looking at probably, you know, I guess they have what? Pick 10.
So you do pick 10 Kelly you bray Ricky Rubio.
For Chris Paul, that's a pretty good deal for both sides.
I actually think that's probably a little bit better than what.
Okay, so he's going to get otherwise, because I don't think the asking price is gonna be that high for a 35 year old point guard who has had some injuries and has two monster $40 million years left on his contract.
Now look, it's only two years, and you know if if it's just a dud and you screw this up and he gets injured right away, I mean, you know that sucks.
But for a team like Phoenix, that really what do you have to lose? You need to make sure you get some type of input from, and you really just ensure that you're going to keep Devin book around, at least at least for another year.
Um, I think I think it's the right move, their the right team.
It's always made sense to me, and I'm happy that, you know, they're they're doing due diligence on baking, sure that they are going to keep him happy as best as possible.
But yeah, that's the main rumor and then I really we're going to just spend the rest of the time talking about this draft.
I'm not a huge draft, Nick like, That's not my wheelhouse necessarily.
I'll tell everybody that is, you know, as many times as possible.
Um, but I don't know if you necessarily have to be for this draft.
It's a very strange year.
Um, in that it seems like it's a real curse to be picks one through three.
Um, you know, Charlotte, I think, is shown some willingness to try to actually draft in this top three.
And it makes sense like they might as well try to draft the best player available.
And if they draft a bust a well, like, what are you really going to get? You need somebody to build around, you know? I mean, like, it was like, who do they have outside of like? Is Devonte graham gonna ever even be an All Star? I would probably lean towards.
I don't really think he would be in.
Like, I guess you'd have to take the same trajectory as Kemba Walker.
But like the second half of that season, teams really started scheming for him and he just, you know, he's He's a really nice three point shooter.
He moves the ball well, but he's really limited inside, and it's kind of small.
So, you know, it's really hard to evolve the way that Kemba Walker has, So I'd probably lean towards No, um, you know, and Kemba was a great finish or coming out of college.
So, you know, I mean, for them, like their their their roster is pretty bare.
They might as well just go for it.
Just drives somebody, you know? Well, if it doesn't work, it doesn't work.
But at least you're drafting a high upside guy, you know, like a James Wiseman or even a Lemelle a ball.
If you wanted to do that, um, some of these other teams like you, look at the Timberwolves.
You look at the warriors, they are in the mode where they want to compete right now.
And when you have that in mind, you really like.
Your goal is is to be due to do a couple of things.
You can try to bring in more veteran help or or more young, younger.
Andi put that around towns and Russell, Or you could do as this article or this.
This headline says, Um, you can try to bring in another pick and really stack up your lottery.
You know, essentially which, what you're looking at the lottery play ball with a similarly desperate team.
Maybe more desperate team in the Atlanta Hawks, who, I guess, want to stack the decks with every single wing from last year's draft class.
Um, which is interesting.
I It's very clear to me that they are prioritizing young wing help, young defensive, you know, really guys that can that can guard multiple positions.
They wanna put as many of those guys around.
Trae Young is possible, which makes sense because he's an abhorrent defender.
That's the That's the vision for them.
So the proposed trade in this came out through Kevin O Connor of the ringer.
You're looking at putting, you know, Jared Culver, Um, pick 17, which I think the Timberwolves have from the Nets on.
And you're gonna flip that for the number six pick.
So you're bringing in another lottery pick, which is interesting.
I don't know what that's a signal of.
I it's either they're gonna take their two picks that they have in this year's draft and try to move those for something else.
Or they really are going to try to take two young guys from this draft and maybe say Hey, look like, you know, maybe we trade back and try to play ball with, you know, with with Charlotte and we get the number three pick and then we take to because it's it's kind of tough to stomach.
Like if you take Isaac Kokoro, who's a really he's gonna be like a nice role player by all accounts and if somebody who's like a really nice, supportive peace and would look great next to Russell in towns.
But if you take him number one, that's kind of tough to stomach, you know what I mean? Like, you look at the number one pick and you you want to star or you want to shoot for the stars of that, so that's a lot of pressure.
So if you trade back, you get the number three pick you get.
You know somebody like a you know, and you get this number six pick and you just draft two of the best role players in this class that really after you get past the you know that Theo Edwards Lemelle Oh, James Wiseman Guys like it's a really nice class full of really strong role players.
You can go a variety of different ways, and if they want to stack the three indeed decks and really try to grab many of these top in Isaka Karos Jared, uh, you know, it's just like, you know, basically get a better version of Jericho over.
Um, you could do that in this draft, so I Yeah, I see what the plan is.
And I I like that to a degree.
Um, I'm just interested.
It's It's a lot of like moving pieces this year, so it'll be really interesting on draft.
And I think we're gonna get a ton of trades and we're gonna get a lot of trades before that.
And they're gonna be star players on the move and, like there are like, every single team has no idea it feels like about at least one player on their roster.
So so and that just makes a really interesting situation.
We hit, you know, I think they're trying to lift moratorium on the 16th, so that makes things really interesting.
You know, teams have had months and months and months and months.
Sorry about cameras out of focus that we are, um, you know, months and months and months to try and figure out like, Oh, like which players do we like? Like they've now gone through every single roster.
They've looked at every single guy.
They've looked at film of every single guy because you know what? They've had nothing better to do.
They're itching to make some trade.
That's not exactly and appealing free agency class, the draft classes and all that appealing.
So what our team's gonna do, they're naturally gonna look at possible trades.
Who would we like on this roster? So I think once that moratorium is lifted, you're looking at a really crazy period that's going to extend into the draft.
I you know, and it and there will be picks on the, you know, on the move.
We have no idea.
Like we're looking at this like, Oh, wow.
Wonder where the Timberwolves are gonna drafted number six like, what wings are they looking at? They might package those two picks that they now have and and package them for, I don't know, a Victor Oladipo or somebody like that.
Like we just have no idea what's going to happen.
And I think for me, that makes it really fun, like it's going to be a ridiculous draft night.
Last year we had a bunch of picks flying everywhere we got.
You know, guys, I mean, look, the Hawks, who we had again in this headline.
The Hawks made a big deal and and and grabbed the multiple guys that got reddish, who is looking like a strong building block for them.
And I expect a lot of that, and I i for me.
I'm excited for that.
Um, and I'm just excited to, like, get some really news like e mean, really Think about it.
We have trades happening on, I guess Monday, right, like Monday this upcoming week, and then we have the draft and then immediately after that, we're gonna have a whole bunch of rumors, and there's gonna be guys like, you know, not inking two deals, but there's gonna be rumors coming out about like it's not like we're not gonna have any news on Thursday next week and no, there's gonna be guys that are basically all the way signed in.
They've probably been signed in for two weeks now.
Um, so I mean, that's just that's that's gonna be super exciting.
I'm looking forward to that.
Um, I want to talk a little bit about the Timberwolves and what their vision is and what the ideas and I I've really kind of I, I don't know, trying to build the perfect roster around these guys.
I I just I'm really curious, like for them, they're the team that, like there's two swing teams right now and it's funny because they're actually trying to trade with one another.
Um, you have the Atlanta Hawks, and you have the Minnesota Timberwolves, two teams that are really, really hungry to make the playoffs.
I guess you could throw the Kings in there, though.
They have been a little bit quieter, and I actually think they they may understand that they're probably not gonna make the playoffs this year.
Um, do you have these two teams one in each conference that are desperate to make the playoffs like desperate? I think you could put the Suns in there, though I do feel a lot better about the sons.
And I think the obvious move is to bring in CP three these two teams.
The road is a little bit cloudier, and you could say, Look, it's the East.
You know why? Why are we Why would it be difficult for the Atlanta Hawks to make the playoffs? Well, you really look at it.
There are seven teams that are gonna make the playoffs.
The Indiana Pacers are immortal and are never going to miss the playoffs.
They're never going to miss the playoffs ever.
I'm convinced you have the Raptors, the Celtics, the Nets, the Sixers, Who am I missing the Heat and what does that put me at? That puts me at what? 67? So you basically have 67 teams right now that are vying for playoff spots and are I don't want to stay locked in because that's oh, in the Bucks to, uh, that's that's a little like, firm like we never know what's gonna happen.
It's gonna be a very compressed season.
There could be injuries, fine, but those teams are still strong from the top end down, and it's just really hard for me to see really anybody replace those teams in the in the bottom of the east.
Unless you are like, Ah, big.
I don't know, Cavaliers believer, which I mean, God, Speed.
But you know, after that, like, if you're looking at these these teams vying for that last spot, the pistons are gonna be in the mix.
The Knicks probably won't be in the mix, and it kind of accepted their fate this year.
So then it becomes like, Okay, could the Hawks make it? I actually would prefer the Bulls like it seems like the Bulls are gonna do little things.
They're gonna move around, they're gonna look for the right guy.
Um, they have some good players.
They just need somebody that connects all of them.
And maybe that's just a better head coach.
Um, so you're that team makes a lot of sense to jump in there.
And I actually think if you're looking at anybody in the east right now to make it to that eight spot A, you could look at the magic because the magic say what you want.
They have a baseline of they have a good coach.
And Steve Clifford, I wouldn't say.
He's like an amazing, you know, great top end coach, But he's a really good regular season coach.
He grinds out, wins his strategy, works in the regular season.
He gets buy in from his team defensively.
Every single year, that team will be in the mix.
It's not fun. It's not ***y.
It's not exciting.
They will be in the mix.
That's the way this works.
Um, you know you're gonna have this Hawks team that has a lot of holes and they were one of the worst three point shooting teams in the league.
Even with, you know, a roster that doesn't necessarily seem like it would be bad at threes.
And you got Kevin harder.
You got Trae Young.
You had John Collins shooting 40% from three Post All Star break, still a team that really couldn't shoot threes and was super suspect when it came to their bench and has a lot of work to do when it comes to building on a strong roster on Ben, You have this Bulls team which has always had talent.
I actually picked them to be my sleeper team.
Last year on DAT was in spite of having the worst coach in the league.
I thought they could do it.
That didn't happen.
Well, now you have all three of these teams vying for this one spot.
I still probably have the Hawks at number three on my board to make that eight seed spot.
So you have this team that's super, you know, like very, very desperate to make the playoffs.
Then you flip conferences.
You have the Minnesota Timberwolves, who have mortgaged a first round pick to get D'Angelo Russell, um, someone that people are very split on.
I like D Angelo Russell, you know e.
I've watched him quite a bit, and I've watched the ups and downs with him.
I understand the negatives, Um, and I understand it like he took steps back in certain areas last year, and he also made steps in the right direction.
His defense took a major step back last year, and that partially comes with playing on two teams that were basically lottery teams from December on, so that might have to do with that a little bit.
Conversely, you have his free throw shooting like his free throw numbers went up.
His at room numbers improved.
They didn't improve in terms of volume, but he was better around the Cup and it was just a part of his game that I thought was a major hole, that he made very slight alterations, very slight.
Didn't become like amazing, you know, superstar point guard.
But he improved on little areas that he needed.
You have Karl towns.
We know all the questions about him. We also know what he's great at.
How's it going? A. Six d a.
Hope you're doing well.
I mean, like, you know, you kind of know what they are.
Both of these guys are negatives defensively.
And to be completely frank with you, like it's really hard to survive in that conference.
If you don't have defender, it just is it's really hard.
It's really, really hard.
It's It's really difficult because you look at it, you know, seeds.
I mean, how deep do you wanna go? Seeds one through six this year.
The the Lakers, the Clippers when, when fully, uh, fully feeling themselves the Nuggets.
Who? Yeah, sure, they had their days where they weren't necessarily great defensively, especially in the regular season, but they clamped up when it mattered.
I thought they were fine defensively.
They weren't outstanding.
But they were, at least at the very least, passable.
Um, the Jazz, which again took a slight step back.
That's another team that can lock in defensively.
The Rockets were great defensively in the bubble.
You have all these teams and and and rosters in O. K. C.
To another team that really defended pretty well.
All these teams are, at least at the very least, uh, you know, slightly above average or better, the Timberwolves air.
I don't know what you have to do.
You have to do a lot of work.
You have to do a lot of work to figure out how to get into that class.
I think you can survive without a top end defense in the n B. A.
But a your offense better be prolific.
Better be prolific.
And then on the flip side, I do think you need to be at least at least league average unless you have, like, a bona fie day.
Uh, you know, like, uh, one of these top five guys.
It's really hard to do that.
So they're in a tricky spot they're desperate to.
They know they need to get help.
And right now they it seems like they're viewing this as a possible like, Oh, maybe we need to bring in a third star.
I also could make the case that hey, like, maybe you just trade these picks for Bond.
Sadly, there's not that many of these guys out there.
Um, it's really hard to find a guy that's, you know, like a wing, a wing that makes sense next to these two guys and Congar de multiple positions.
Um, so I mean, you know, it's it's a tricky spot, but both of them seem very desperate to make the playoffs, and they both have a long way to go.
So it makes sense that their that their that they want to deal with one another.
What about the CP three d book trade? The Sun's Thunder? Yeah.
No, I talked about this in a little bit.
The top of the broadcast.
I mean, I've always liked it like it's a trade that's always made sense to me, like, you know, when the what do we even call this? The dog days of the hiatus? You know, right before we even had an announcement about bringing the you know about bringing the season back before the bubble happened or anything like that.
Me and my co host, Adam who? It's all over this lovely website, um, Andi have been working with him for a very long time.
Um, we kind of talked a lot about Chris Paul destinations and possible places that he, you know, that he could fit and it really came down to Okay.
First off, find a team that needs a point guard because there's only what, five teams, six teams and a.
So that's the tricky part is fine.
How many teams, you know, point guard be how many teams feel like they can really win it or they really want to make the playoffs.
That list shrinks and shrink and shrink, so it comes down to the Bucks.
The Lakers, the Clippers and the Sons is another one that we landed on and we said that makes a little bit of sense.
They are in a position where, you know, unlike the Hawks or the Timberwolves, they don't have a point guard like those teams.
They want to make the playoffs, but they don't have a point guard at this point.
And look, I like Ricky Rubio Ideo.
I think he's a nice A solid starter, even better as a backup point guard.
He's just seems like a riel, consummate professional.
But you know, that's not really gonna move the needle.
He's had spots where he's looked good.
He looked good for Utah in a couple of those seasons.
He had some nice playoff moments for them.
It's not a real needle mover, and you do need to put somebody next to Devin Booker, not to mention you have a center that you've taken with the first overall pick.
If you bring Chris Paul in, there's a very good chance you're gonna get maximum output from him, and you're really going to start using him in ways that I don't think he's fully been used, just like at the level that you know that that you want him to be used at.
You want him to start getting those really easy lob passes on.
I know Booker's improved as a passer he has, but you know, bringing Chris Paul on like that just it improves the entire roster and it just I mean, look what happened. Okay.
See, last year it just like everybody around him improves.
So you can, you know, Cam Johnson is a guy that, you know, it's a three and D forward or 33 and sort of De Andre and And he could take another mini leap.
He couldn't, um, you know, And you and you have called Bridges is another guy that he's gonna get easy looks when playing next to Devin Booker and CP three.
So it's always made sense to me.
They're scary, too, by the way, Like you take what that that O K. C.
Team was last year where you have Chris, Paul and a bunch of really solid players around him.
And instead of having SG A who looked pretty terrified of being in the playoffs, you put Devin Booker in that spot.
That's a scary team.
It is, and it gives you a little bit Maura at the center position.
I don't think those two teams air all that off.
Cam Johnson could do a bit of a Gallinari impression.
The floor give you options if you want to play really small.
And then from there, it's just a bunch of guys that makes sense with one another and another superstar next toe. They're scary.
I hope the deal gets done.
I think it would be incredibly fun to have them in the mix.
It would be fun to see Devin Booker in a playoff setting because I think he'd be an absolute dog.
That guy is fearless, but really, you know, it's just like they be fun they would be.
That's the team that, like, if you're in the Western Conference, let's say they finishes the 45 seed and I don't know who is gonna be the one seed, By the way, we have no idea.
I mean, you could say, Oh, it's probably gonna be the Lakers, right? We don't know that we're doing this season super early.
So because of that, the Lakers might sit there first.
You know, the prominent Lakers really might be sitting games for the 1st 10 games, so all of a sudden you get in.
Oh, well, are there gonna be teams that are gonna be trying to move around and avoid the sons or just it's It's gonna be fun.
It's gonna be really fun there are fun variable to put into this.
Um, there are team like, let's say if you're the l A Clippers and you have all types of nightmares about, you know, playing the Mavs and getting stretched by the Mavs and getting just outright beaten by the nuggets Um, a CP three and Devin Booker Suns team is somebody you do not want to face because those guys are gonna be hunger.
They're not gonna be backing down.
They're not going to be scared of you and you have a lot of pressure to win.
I want it to happen.
That's all I'm gonna say on this.
Let me respond to a couple of these comments that I'm gonna get out of here.
What team would CB three would be a good fit for Lakers would be stacked? Um, yeah, they would be.
That would be, you know, and I'll say this also, I don't think they need him.
I don't think they dio.
I actually think they would better be suited to keeping things the way they have it.
So maybe the move is Thio trade.
Danny Green and Kuzma for something, but I don't think you need to go all in on CP three and give away your 2020 pick. I don't know.
I mean, I get that it makes you better, but just stick with what you're doing.
I don't complicate the ball handling situation either.
Like, you know, we could say out.
Yeah, that'll be great.
Like you have LeBron and CP three playing together.
But both of those guys air game managers like LeBron, we're hitting a new stage of LeBron where he's just the full time point guard.
If anything, he should be playing next to a scoring guard.
I mean, you know, the and those calves teams with Kyrie Irving next to him were pretty much a glimpse into the future of LeBron like That's that's who she should be playing next to.
You should be playing next to another top end score at the combo guard position.
That's why they pursued somebody like Derrick Rose.
Think he'd want a little more floor spacing than than what Derrick Rose provides.
But somebody like that you want LeBron to have the ball in his hands.
You want him to run everything and you bring Chris Paul in and those air to genius playmakers and it might really work.
And I could be completely wrong about this, but I do think to a degree like, yeah, I don't know if you really need that, Like, just run everything through LeBron and take advantage of the Anthony Davis thing and again make a small trade.
I mean, that's kind of that's kind of where I'm at right now on, and yeah, I mean, I think I think that would be that would be a deal.
I wouldn't necessarily look for them.
So that's all I got today.
Thank you guys for watching so much.
Be sure? Well, actually, I have a couple of things to shout out.
Be sure to watch yesterday's episode of Basketball Mawr, which is my live stream and podcast here for SportsCastr.
I had Kaitlin Cooper on yesterday to talk some pacers, and it was It was like, I I don't tryto overshare my stuff.
That was an awesome, awesome episode.
So go watch that.
I'm really happy with that episode.
Stay tuned for tomorrow.
I think I'm bringing on.
I think we settled in on 8 p.m.
Bringing on a guy named Hardwood Harold, who is a draft guy again.
Not much of a draft guy I want to bring an expert on.
We are going to talk about this class, some potential options, a different spots for different teams, and that will be fun.
I could use a riel draft conversation because I need somebody.
Thio explain it a little bit and just details some of these players to know what to expect.
So thank you for watching Go check out all my guys.
Adam are Breck, Simeon, Russell, Keith McPherson, The whole crew.
And I will see you guys tomorrow with Adam Peace.
