from Brecht.
00:00:01
And over there, the healthy, the wealthy, the wise Mr Andrew Reginald Mackiewicz.
00:00:07
How are you, sir Reginald? I kind of like that.
00:00:10
Should I should I go down to the D M v of the courthouse and, uh, make the change today? Make it official? Yeah.
00:00:18
I think that there's obviously a trend there.
00:00:20
There's gonna be a cash.
00:00:22
Certainly around that, as I think you knew there would be.
00:00:25
So yeah, feel free to use that.
00:00:26
And listen, Telcel, from now on, you call me the Big Reg around town.
00:00:30
Uh, Big Reg, Reggie just got to figure out the nickname at that point speaking.
00:00:35
Speaking of, I had a cat named Reggie once speaking of names, you know, there's some some guys on the roster that have come and gone.
00:00:44
Maybe we didn't realize existed in a lot of ways in the Giants fan base purview.
00:00:48
But you know, it's the name.
00:00:49
Does the name Willie ring any bells for you? Or possibly trigger that that the rainy bells for you, it doesn't.
00:00:56
Well, it shouldn't, Andy, because instead of really fully prepping as I sometimes do this morning I found myself listening.
00:01:02
Thio Conan O'Brien podcast and they had on Willie Nelson Are Are you familiar with Trigger his guitar? No.
00:01:11
So, apparently Willie Nelson has a guitar named Trigger uh, that he's had forever, and it's like his distinct sound that he uses.
00:01:19
And it's like so it's so popular that when he puts on a show, they put Trigger out on stage first.
00:01:25
And it's the guitar that he had everybody signed over the years.
00:01:27
All the musicians played with.
00:01:28
They put him out in the like.
00:01:29
Fans run up to the stage to see Trigger the guitar.
00:01:33
And it just made me think there aren't a lot of names that that I think Giants fans would would run to the stage to see on the Giants roster.
00:01:41
Adam, you know what that makes me think of instantly makes me think, Who's more responsible for Willie Nelson success? Is it Willie Nelson, or is it trigger? It's very simple, like with the Patriots.
00:01:52
Is it more Bill Belichick or Tom Brady? Is it you know, is that the instrument? Is that the mastermind behind the instrument? I think you could argue both, right? That said Yeah.
00:02:01
You know what, man? I didn't I didn't know how I was tying this in, but that's why it's a partnership.
00:02:06
That's why you have a co host friends.
00:02:07
You'll whip something out there and you hope that somebody cleans up the mess.
00:02:11
At the end of the day, it was a very entertaining podcast.
00:02:14
Will feel free to listen if you're a fan of that.
00:02:16
But then on the other side of it, man, uh, this is obviously the midweek when we start to hear about injury updates and roster moves, etcetera.
00:02:22
And the Giants have, of course, made a few of those.
00:02:25
So on the news and move side of things.
00:02:29
Uh uh, back from the injury, he has been debated on the Ross Way.
00:02:35
Know that we claimed Devon tape.
00:02:38
Devante, uh, off of the way.
00:02:41
Yep.
00:02:42
Waiver wire.
00:02:43
There.
00:02:44
I do.
00:02:45
I get there.
00:02:46
Eventually we claimed him.
00:02:47
So now he'll be active as well.
00:02:48
The wide receiver position and in a in a connected move as we actually talked about this guy.
00:02:50
You said it right? Ah, fond farewell was bid.
00:02:53
We thought possibly prematurely turned out.
00:02:55
It was very apt.
00:02:56
Corey Valentine waved from the Giants roster.
00:02:59
Yeah.
00:03:00
I mean, way saw the writing on the wall.
00:03:01
When you look at the snap counts and you look at all of the different cornerbacks the Giants have brought in, you know, ever since, Uh, Sam Bill opted out.
00:03:09
Ever since DeAndre Baker had his legal troubles, we've We've gone through what feels like the dozens of different quarterbacks.
00:03:17
And the one consistency is that Corey Valentine just gets leapfrogged by any anyone that we sign, whether it's Madre Harper, Ryan Lewis like, you know, it keeps going on and on.
00:03:26
You know, Isaac yet him.
00:03:27
He just keeps getting buried and at at that point, you kind of sit there and say, Well, if we're pulling people off the street and they're playing in front of Valentine, how much longer is he really going to be on the roster and with some of these different changes that are coming in and, you know, mantra Harper looking good on special teams, you know, yet him being cornerback number two of the week for the time being, regardless of his play, he kind of just saw it coming with Corey Valentine.
00:03:52
Wish him the best, you know, Unfortunate didn't work out.
00:03:55
Let me ask you this real quick here to on that note, because I talked about this over on the Twitter machine of you know, you put Sam Bill into this bag, you obviously put DeAndre Baker into this bag.
00:04:06
You now put Corey Ballantine into this bag like this is a This is a deep list.
00:04:10
And there's a lot of, you know we don't want to do too much Dave Gettleman talk.
00:04:14
But this is a pretty long list of a very specific position that the Giants have struggled finding talent at.
00:04:20
So that's the first part of it.
00:04:22
And the second part is with the way you Adam has played.
00:04:24
Are you at all surprised that if maybe this was at least, you know, on the spectrum for the Giants? Hey, if we need to, we can move on from Valentine.
00:04:31
Are you surprised at all? They didn't least throw them out there just to say, Hey, look, here's one last look.
00:04:35
Because you, Adam Yeah, um, is obviously not the answer.
00:04:37
You know, Ryan Lewis went down, etcetera, etcetera, but, you know, just seems interesting.
00:04:40
That didn't even get maybe one last sniff.
00:04:42
That's unfortunately how, um how pours play had been, I guess.
00:04:46
Well, if you think about it.
00:04:48
Before the Washington game, the Giants had lost four games by a combined seven points, so they were in every single one of these games.
00:04:57
So there wasn't really an opportunity for the Giants to say, Hey, it's a blowout.
00:05:00
Let's just see if there's anything that we've got going on.
00:05:03
They didn't feel comfortable enough even to try to sneak him in like they've done with Nate Ebner in the secondary.
00:05:08
Just to say, Let's steal a couple of snaps for for this guy, Let's give someone else a breather.
00:05:12
So I'm not.
00:05:13
I'm not really surprised. It didn't seem like it worked out early.
00:05:15
He went from playing.
00:05:16
I think 97% of the snaps in Week 1 to the last two weeks, and that's, you know, the writing was on the wall for him, you know, Also, it sounds like, you know, releasing him.
00:05:25
Ryan Lewis seems like he's coming back a little bit healthy, so they already have an option to be able to slide into that, you know, cornerback room.
00:05:31
So there's just not enough room for a guy on the roster that's playing maybe a snapper to on special teams and is an emergency guy at cornerback.
00:05:38
Yeah, yeah, And so as I, as I said, over over there on Social as well, I hope he catches on with another team and hope he gets to continue.
00:05:44
His professional career.
00:05:46
Obviously doesn't look like we'll do the Giants, though.
00:05:47
Hey, there's some spectrum.
00:05:49
Or maybe he works his way back to the practice.
00:05:50
What we have seen that across the league really with some of these young players try to continue to develop them.
00:05:55
On the other side of the spectrum, though, too, is there has been.
00:05:59
Obviously, we were able to get Pettus because we are sitting high up on the waiver claim chart.
00:06:05
And there's another diamond in the rough, potentially out there for the New York football Giants at a position of need.
00:06:11
Do you think that Big Blue should attack him onto the roster and I see what you did there, Adam? You're talking about the cars.
00:06:19
McKinley Better known as tack. McKinley.
00:06:22
Correct. Yes.
00:06:23
So tech McKinley defensive end was was released, You know, edge Rusher was released by the Atlanta Falcons over the last day, day and a half.
00:06:31
It became official yesterday.
00:06:33
Um, he's an interesting prospect.
00:06:36
He, uh you know, he's been inlay since 2016 was a first round pick.
00:06:40
The Falcons declined his $10.
00:06:41
6 million.
00:06:42
50 year option.
00:06:43
Uh, he's really not played very many snaps this year.
00:06:47
It seems like he's been in and out of the lineup.
00:06:48
They've kind of had a few different re treads that have been playing in front of him, and clearly he's been disgruntled and frustrated about his situation.
00:06:56
No, he only has 17 and 17 ish sacks in the 49 games that he had.
00:07:00
But again, it's over.
00:07:01
Limited action.
00:07:02
I mean, what are your thoughts about Zach McKinley? Yeah, four games played in this season.
00:07:08
Four games started, but as you see there, below is visually.
00:07:11
If you're watching on Stream yard live right now.
00:07:13
One pass deflection, one sack, seven Q B hits You mentioned the overall stat lines for him as well go back to his rookie season.
00:07:20
This is a guy who wasn't starting his rookie year but came up with six sacks and 10-Q B hits had you know 20 combined tackles in their asses.
00:07:27
Well, yeah.
00:07:31
A dwindling.
00:07:34
Especially last year.
00:07:35
2019, where he in 14 started.
00:07:37
13 is 3.
00:07:38
5 sacks.
00:07:39
13 Q B hits.
00:07:40
29 combined tackles.
00:07:41
I mean, there's some level of production there, and obviously we know that the Giants have a need in that area of the defense.
00:07:48
But what is the what is the two sides of the coin here? Because there's the production and being a young player and being worth taking a flyer on.
00:07:53
And then, you know, I'll say, not totally dissimilar to the Pettus situation.
00:07:59
Well, here's a guy that was on the outs from his team for certain reasons.
00:08:03
Likewise for attack, it seemed like his his 10 year in Atlanta was coming to a close, maybe by his own doing as well.
00:08:10
So let's start with the neck.
00:08:12
Let's start with the negative.
00:08:13
The negative on Tak is that, you know, it seems like he's not a team first guy, uh, kind of feels like it's not in the mold of what Joe judges looking for and how he's building out his team.
00:08:26
Uh, you know, he's gone on Twitter to voice his displeasure very similarly to other players that we have already on shipping their bags on the way out, came in and basically said, Hey, listen, the team had a second round pick for me last year.
00:08:38
They decided not to bite on it.
00:08:40
The team at the trade deadline had 1/5 and 1/6 round pick for me decided not to bite on it like what's happening.
00:08:45
Either play me or get me out of here.
00:08:47
And you know, it feels kind of weird for the Atlanta Falcons that right after the trade deadline, they just flat out release him.
00:08:54
You know, if it is true that they were getting trade offers just a couple of days ago, so that's kind of the negative part of it is.
00:08:59
Culturally, it's going to be interesting to see whether it's a fit for the Giants on the other side of it, The positive is the Giants really aren't at a position right now.
00:09:08
Thio really like pass on 25 year old athletic and cheap talent that costs nothing to acquire.
00:09:17
Remember, the waiver wire in in the NFL is not like your waiver wire.
00:09:21
In fantasy football, you don't move to the end of the line when you put in a waiver claim for someone.
00:09:26
The Giants are at third because they have one of the worst records in the league, so the Giants can use their waiver claim to acquire Tack McKinley.
00:09:32
They only have to spend about $800,000 on him.
00:09:35
He's 25 years old.
00:09:36
He has proven to be able t o get Sacks and Adam in limited time.
00:09:40
This year, he is top seven or eight in the entire league in quarterback pressures.
00:09:45
When he's on the field, he makes things happen.
00:09:48
So if you're the Giants, you got to say, This is such a low risk option.
00:09:51
It's the same thing.
00:09:52
I stopped medicine.
00:09:54
You know that dependence is actually signed through next year.
00:09:56
But this could be a nice trial for the Giants toe look at, especially when they need help in a position like edge rusher.
00:10:01
Yeah, and you know, you mentioned about the attitude or around tack, right? And whether or not that's a concern, remember, Madre Harper kind of got hit with that same type off of stigma.
00:10:12
When he was out there on the Raiders, he was only on the practice squad and we took him from there.
00:10:15
Is that maybe, you know, this guy isn't totally committed or isn't a team guy.
00:10:19
So you know, you want to mitigate how many of these these kind of voices you bring into the locker room.
00:10:24
But when When their players that in Monterey Harper Young player off the practice squad, you know, big opportunity.
00:10:28
So he's probably gonna come in and try to, you know, snap into order and get in line with with what the new team is trying to provide for him.
00:10:35
Likewise for tax write like, Okay, I get it.
00:10:37
Because at the end of the day, he ended up a lot of people he was saying was like, I'm not even that good. Come on.
00:10:42
Like getting the office here like he was actually trying to downgrade himself to get him out of there.
00:10:46
So I think a fresh, fresh area could be important for him.
00:10:49
Fresh, you know, fresh change of scenery.
00:10:51
But also for the Giants, like this isn't about division talk.
00:10:54
We already dismiss that earlier in the week, But this is just about if you want to stay competitive in these games you want opportunity to win games, you could get a look at this guy.
00:11:02
He can contribute for you.
00:11:03
And then you can worry about what that all looks like on the back end and going into the offseason.
00:11:07
But you may as well get that firsthand sample size of him over the last, we'll end up probably only being six games if they were to bring them in and clear covert protocols.
00:11:15
Yeah, I mean, listen, there is There is enough to say we drafted a bunch of guys like Carter, Coughlin and OSHA examine EZ, and we have a lot of youth that we want to develop, and we don't want someone coming in on a short rental stunting some of this growth.
00:11:28
But when you look at guys that that have been around the league like Jamal shirt Trent Harris, guys that we know what they are, they're known commodities.
00:11:37
They're known plug and play kind of guys.
00:11:39
I wouldn't mind taking a flyer on McKinley, not giving up any assets in the process and see if we have something maybe long term that we can leverage.
00:11:47
Yep, 100%.
00:11:48
So we'll see if that shakes out by the end of the day.
00:11:50
Today, around four o'clock, we'll get the news around.
00:11:53
If they put if they chose to put in a claim for him and then if so, if they were awarded him, depending on what else they maybe we're looking at, you know there could be other options that they're also looking around the league.
00:12:01
And again, we've highlighted this across the course of the of the podcast this season that we've really enjoyed.
00:12:06
How the Giants have been very active on the waiver wire, very willing to move the quarry. Brownstein.
00:12:12
I hate to see someone get cut, but the fact that you're willing to say Listen, we just drafted him the year prior obviously had a non football related injury, but we just drafted him.
00:12:22
It's okay if it isn't working out, it isn't working out.
00:12:24
We need to be willing to move on.
00:12:26
So you get a look at another player that potentially could be a contributor.
00:12:30
Yeah, yeah, for into some of the other knows, coming off that Washington foot is time for as you lost me there.
00:12:39
Maybe for a second. But I'm back.
00:12:40
Don't worry about me.
00:12:41
Friends It is time for this week in Giants history.
00:12:43
Andrew Mackiewicz.
00:12:44
If I told you the year, let's let's let's test your knowledge because I I probably could cast my mind to this and land on it without already having the information in front of me.
00:12:53
UH, 1997 this week in 1997.
00:12:59
Who's under center for the New York Football Giants, 1997.
00:13:05
I am going to go with Dave Brown.
00:13:09
Oh, I thought you started with the first letter.
00:13:13
Is Danny Canel Danny the gunslingers? So you know this week in Giants history.
00:13:18
In case you're wondering friends, the Giants were beating the Arizona Cardinals 19 to 10 on the strong performance of Danny C****.
00:13:28
1 25.
00:13:29
5 q B rating.
00:13:30
Overall rating.
00:13:31
Obviously, Q B R didn't exist back then. Two touchdowns.
00:13:34
No interceptions.
00:13:35
Blazing the ball around the field for 182 yards on 14 of 21 Buddy.
00:13:41
It was the stuff of legends from the quarterback position.
00:13:44
Do you? Obviously you can cast your mind back there and vividly remember watching the game where where Tiki Barber had four catches for 44 yards and Amani Toomer with just two grabs, but he went 64 really made a statement pulling in a touchdown as well.
00:13:58
All of these things are ringing bells right there, just banging off in your head.
00:14:01
Well, Adam, the only thing that makes me feel good is that Dave Brown was on the roster in 1997 so at least I was circling the wagons on that one.
00:14:10
But yeah, I vividly remember, like the short screen passes I got called back for a penalty early in the second quarter against Arizona Cardinals in 97.
00:14:19
Wow! Wow, I know that's a lie and also delivered with just such casual confidence.
00:14:26
Yeah, that probably happened.
00:14:28
I'll go back and check.
00:14:29
I'll go.
00:14:30
I'll go back and check the VHS tape and see what the film shows.
00:14:33
There s So listen.
00:14:34
The Giants were winning games once upon a time in 1997 so it's just good to throw a little nod back as we try to dio each and every week on our Wednesday broadcast.
00:14:43
Now let's turn our attention back over to the Washington football team.
00:14:47
That matchup that we had this past week, obviously getting our second win on.
00:14:50
Let's just hear inside those numbers a little bit more because there's some nice things to take away from this.
00:14:55
Obviously, uh, we're obviously going offensive line friends.
00:14:59
That's what we like to do here. But it's important.
00:15:01
So some little footnotes are that Thomas saw reps additionally, at left tackle, also sprinkled in it guard.
00:15:07
Also sprinkled in it.
00:15:08
Right tackle is, well, this rotational system.
00:15:10
That Joe Judge has come out.
00:15:12
You know, Colombo has come out and said, Yeah, we just want to get a look at these guys.
00:15:16
It's good to keep the opposition confused about what? What looks we're gonna bring.
00:15:20
We also know this is about figuring out where the talent is across this offensive line and what we're gonna look like going into next year.
00:15:27
But here's the great news in this past game.
00:15:30
Two big players.
00:15:31
We'll start with Thomas.
00:15:33
36.
00:15:34
Pass blocking snaps allow just one pressure against Washington.
00:15:38
Pert playing on the right side, mixing it on the left side as well.
00:15:41
A little bit 24 snaps 12 and pass blocking did not allow a single pressure.
00:15:45
Let's start there.
00:15:46
Man like this is really positive returns for the Giants offensive line, especially in a game taking on specifically good edge pass rushing for Washington.
00:15:56
I mean, we just talked about it.
00:15:57
Uh, you know, when we're talking about the temperate Bucks game, it's like when Daniel Jones has just a little bit of time.
00:16:03
This team looks so much better on when the run game can actually be semi competent and get you 3.
00:16:08
5 yards, even four yards carry.
00:16:11
It just makes the entire offense look drastically different, and it starts with the offensive line.
00:16:16
I am so happy to see Andrew Thomas rounding into form.
00:16:20
The first couple of weeks were rough.
00:16:21
Ah, lot of people were starting to early, say, man, was he Was he a bust? Why did we pick him? You and I both were excited, screaming, chanting, fist pumping on draft day when the Giants took Andrew Thomas and he's starting to get his feet underneath him.
00:16:36
He's given up one sack in the last four games.
00:16:39
He went against Chase Young in this last game against Washington football team, as you said, did not give up a sack.
00:16:44
He is slowly starting to come into the player that we hoped for.
00:16:48
And when you look on the other side of the ball and you look at pert Man, if he can continue this progression and development that he's had, the Giants got a steal that would solidify the left tackle and right tackle position for the Giants with two young guys that you have on rookie deals that you're talking about for the next 34 years during Daniel Jones prime.
00:17:07
When sink want, Barkley gets healthy, we may actually have something to build on, and it might be the foundation of our offensive line.
00:17:14
Like who thought we were ever going to say that? Bear two.
00:17:17
Jerry, Thanks for the tip on SportsCastr and checking in with us live.
00:17:21
I don't know who was going to say that I can't I don't know where I stood right coming to the years.
00:17:26
Always a state of flux, and we talked about Hernandez.
00:17:28
He's coming.
00:17:29
Think that e book could be starting to surround into reform fund reveals is incredibly exciting for the Giants.
00:17:40
You have to, at least for a fan standpoint, say hey, if by the end of this year we know that the left and right side of the line are anchored and ready to go.
00:17:47
That's a huge feather in our cap.
00:17:49
Moving forward now, interestingly enough, on the other side of things.
00:17:52
So and I mentioned the different spots, he had one snap a guard.
00:17:54
Thomas did one snap it right tackle.
00:17:56
Fleming actually saw a couple of times at left tackle as well.
00:17:59
They're moving the bodies around there.
00:18:00
You don't know which way they're coming from here.
00:18:01
The downside would be, and not necessarily.
00:18:04
The biggest negative is that Fleming continues to struggle mightily in the run blocking.
00:18:09
Zettler is coming out with real muddling kind of ratings as well.
00:18:12
When you come out of these games, the reason why I say it's not the worst is because these are the older guys.
00:18:16
These are the spot Phil and Fleming.
00:18:18
This is a guy who's coming to coming to the end of his time with the Giants in Zeitler.
00:18:22
So you feel pretty good about the fact that you're moving away from those bodies.
00:18:25
Yeah, and the one guy that we haven't mentioned across this whole offensive line is Nick Gates.
00:18:30
And while it looked like he really was trying his feet underneath him early on in the season.
00:18:36
Uh, he's starting to feel comfortable at center, and, uh, you know, offensive coordinator Colombo kind of came out and said, Gates is starting to get some consistency.
00:18:44
He's just getting started, you know.
00:18:46
Colombo came out and said he thinks he could be one of the best centers in the league, just seeing how he's already developed early on and making this transition in just six short months.
00:18:56
Yeah, came out as the highest rated offensive linemen from this game.
00:19:00
So the proverbial experiment that has been taking a guy who had never played it center, even at the college level and thrusting him into the middle of this line Listen, took the lumps early.
00:19:10
But now you're starting that surrounded the form.
00:19:11
So again, let's go that layer deeper because, unfortunately, the one of the young guys that and we talked about him on on Monday as well that we think the eye test tells us it looks pretty good if we don't always go by the pro football focus metrics.
00:19:24
But they have.
00:19:25
They have Gates getting rate is the highest offensive linemen and then they have Shane Lamu coming off a 12 reading and then giving you a 20 rating.
00:19:33
I don't know how that's humanly possible, so I kind of I kind of look past that.
00:19:36
But now we're saying left tackle, center right tackle feels pretty locked in.
00:19:41
Yeah, it's interesting because Colombo came out and said they love Shane Lemieux's energy.
00:19:45
They said that there is some things in past blocking that he needs to pick up, needs to get a little bit better about.
00:19:51
And you know he's only, you know, 50 snaps in his career of this point.
00:19:56
You know what's gonna what's gonna be interesting And what's interesting about this whole thing at him is well, Hernandez has been out the last two games and the Giants have been able to run the ball and protect Daniel Jones consistently, even with well Hernandez being out and Shane Lamu being the worst pass blocking guard in the entire league.
00:20:14
So there's something weird that's going on where we're looking like a more formidable offensive line.
00:20:20
But the stats and the breakdowns don't suggest that she and Lemieux is the guy that's helping yet.
00:20:24
He's the one that really is, has has filled in for Will Hernandez and looked great.
00:20:28
Do you have any kind of instinctual things that you think about why this is happening? Well, if I want to be really positive, I would say it's because Andrew Thomas is getting stronger and stronger because Nick Gates is getting stronger and stronger.
00:20:42
So it could almost be incidental that Shane Lemieux is plugged in in between them and things overall look a little better, right? We're talking about all the positives there.
00:20:49
So theoretically, you know, we said, Hernandez has struggled.
00:20:53
There is a world where now when Hernandez plugs back in, it looks even better than it has, right? Like there is that there is that opportunity for that to be the case.
00:21:00
Andi, I do wonder about when he comes back, Hernandez will get his reps.
00:21:06
Will probably still look to get Shane them use, um, you know, some some certainly some sample size, But will they look toe now? Bring him in over on the right side in places.
00:21:13
Zeitler for a handful of reps and see how that complements out.
00:21:16
Like why, like a one point here now, over these games, and I'm sure pay attention to the broadcast this week.
00:21:22
I'm sure you will hear them announce it, at least if they're not well, No, it.
00:21:25
And you'll hear from us that you will see a Thomas Hernandez Gates Lamu part starting line in front of Daniel Jones.
00:21:35
There will be a time in that game where both Zettler and Fleming will be off the field and you're going to get this look at the young offensive line and hopefully it's on a you know, extra little bit of time for Daniel Jones.
00:21:47
Deep Bond.
00:21:48
Touchdown pass and you go, Hey, the perfect sample size for all these young guys.
00:21:52
But I don't know directly.
00:21:55
I'm not sure what I would glean to it beyond saying hopefully that the play around him has been better, and that's why it's mitigating.
00:22:01
Ah, young player learning.
00:22:03
I've never seen anything like this.
00:22:05
It's like hockey shifts on an offensive line and, you know, the last couple weeks it seems to be working.
00:22:10
And when you bring Hernandez back, you know, in small doses these players are showing that they can play well, so why not continue to do this? If if it's working, bring in Shane Lamu for For a serious, you know, bring in Will Hernandez for a few different steps here or there.
00:22:24
Change out pert to Fleming and really make it confusing for the defense, because these defensive ends and edge rushers also learn techniques from certain players.
00:22:34
And, as you're kind of, you know, moving people in and out there, like which guys lined up here, What what was the game film on him? What's his weakness? And you're starting to make them actually think a little bit more.
00:22:44
And I know that people will say, Well, this is what bad teams have to do Are you know, not as talented players need to, like have all this different, like smoke and mirrors.
00:22:53
But listen that the Giants were a young team trying to develop on the offensive line.
00:22:56
I have no problem if it's working right now, trying to figure out how all these pieces fit in and seeing what we have at the end of the season.
00:23:04
Yeah, and the last point that you made there we could get off of the offensive line conversation for for our Wednesday show is just that, um, when you think about the line from a defensive perspective.
00:23:14
Not like you know, you don't go into the film room studying Well, what if Fleming is playing at right tackle? And then what if he plays at left tackle? You know, like, what is the sample size tell us over there if it's gonna be Hernandez in a guard, and that's gonna be Lamu.
00:23:26
But what if all of a sudden you see part at left tackle and Thomas is out trying to balance all of those things from a scouting perspective? Like listen, And this is This is a product of us not being that good.
00:23:36
Get on the offensive line, and what you're trying to do is mitigate the development process by then, just throwing a lot of different looks and trying to take the strength in the run game protection or pass protection and shuffle those pieces around so that on specific play, you're giving yourself the best opportunity for success.
00:23:51
Now I will say at some point you'll probably start to get a sample size the defense's can look at and say, Oh, wait, when part comes into left tackle, not just that, because you can, you know that could be a toss up.
00:24:04
But then also in conjunction with that, what happens on the right side of the line, right? So there could end up being some things that the teams contract here in terms of what players get rotated.
00:24:12
And when that signal watch out for a deep pass, Watch out for a run to the right side, etcetera.
00:24:17
Well, and what's interesting at him is you talk about rotational players and and the next thing I wanted to bring up was two different positions where the Giants are gonna have some really interesting decisions to make.
00:24:27
And that's it.
00:24:28
That's it.
00:24:29
Running back and wide receiver.
00:24:30
So we'll start with running back.
00:24:31
So when when healthy Devante Freeman got paid a bunch of money guaranteed up front to be the number one back now with Sick one Barkley out on IR since he's been down with a leg injury, Wayne Goldman has looked great and has been running hard.
00:24:47
They signed Alfred Morris off the practice squad.
00:24:49
He has shown bursts that I didn't know existed.
00:24:52
You have Dion Lewis, who's the past.
00:24:54
Catching back out of the backfield brings a little bit of a different dimension.
00:24:57
Is there.
00:24:58
Is there a possibility that Giants could keep four running backs on the active roster? You know, we kind of way we gleamed to it like this past week about the compliment that you have with Morris and with golf and and obviously, with Freeman coming back from injury, how it's nice to have those options, I guess that, you know, maybe maybe, but here and the reason why is and you can you kind of said it first was, well, Dion Lewis isn't going anywhere.
00:25:23
I don't think like I don't think that he would go anywhere.
00:25:26
You wouldn't wave him outright.
00:25:28
You wouldn't bump some of these guys down to the practice squad or something.
00:25:31
So it becomes, Really, I think Morris is the most obvious move is to say yes.
00:25:36
Hey, nice looking sample size.
00:25:37
They're also you're the oldest back and you know, you're you probably have the lowest ceiling out of any of these guys.
00:25:44
And I would hate to see because maybe it is also possible that Goldman would be the guy and I'm like, but I'd hate to see it.
00:25:50
I know, I know.
00:25:51
That's the end of his contract with the Giants, so there's the least upside of him having a good season.
00:25:55
But in terms of just quality production, he has also given you the largest consistent sample size over the last couple weeks as well.
00:26:01
So there's a real toss up for me, though.
00:26:03
Yeah, and I just don't think I don't see a scenario where the Giants keep for running backs on the active roster.
00:26:09
It's just too, too tough with all the secondary moves the Giants trying to make, um, you know, the the other piece of it that I was I was mentioning and alluding to was, You know, with the waiver claim and the activation of Dante Pettis, the Giants will have six potentially six wide receivers on the active roster.
00:26:25
If you think about that, as of as the way it's constructed now you have four running backs and six wide receivers.
00:26:31
That would be 10 total players on the active roster from those two positions alone.
00:26:36
You know, we talk about Austin Mack, who in his last game look great And you can you can talk about what? The stats kind of bore out from that.
00:26:44
But how do you see the wide receiver room ending up trending towards the game against the Eagles this weekend? Yeah, and that so again, and the reason why it's nice Thio kind of hand in these things.
00:26:53
You can even throw in as a footnote.
00:26:55
The tight end situation, right? Because you've seen Caden Smith has now got up to 38 38 snaps that he had this past week.
00:27:02
He's been increasing steadily.
00:27:03
His percentage.
00:27:04
We talked about how Evan Ingram is coming down a little bit in his numbers, but now you have those three tight ends with total.
00:27:10
Oh, uh, now you have four running backs there, plus the six.
00:27:13
Now you're up to 13 guys that you're running out there within that wide receiver, tight end running back room, and it's It's a big number specifically, even just for the Giants to be carrying on your roster.
00:27:24
So I it's a bigger number.
00:27:26
It's an even bigger number because the Giants are carrying Eric Tomlinson as the fourth tight end right now.
00:27:31
So you're talking about or running back? Yeah, so yeah.
00:27:37
Yeah, so now So now the question becomes right.
00:27:39
Like if I had to look at it and say with Pettus getting brought in.
00:27:44
He has some potential return ability as well in the return game.
00:27:47
So maybe a little extra value there for him on the active roster.
00:27:50
CJ Board is probably the first guy that I look in the wide receiver group and say, Hey, you might get bumped down.
00:27:55
You could even get outright waved potentially if you feel comfortable with Mac right now.
00:27:59
And then again, because we still know that there's a Benjamin Victor waiting in the wings.
00:28:02
To maybe get a little sample is well, so how you create that kind of room and availability.
00:28:06
He might be the first guy in that group, I think Eric, Eric Thomas and you know it is probably the first name I think of in the tight end Group T get taken out of the mix, But that depends on on what Jason Garrett's trying to do offensively.
00:28:17
And when you see the percentages come down for Evan Ingram, you know that it's going somewhere else.
00:28:21
So because because you have him on the Ross, you start to think well is that we want to get to a place where it's him and toe alot out there to really beef up our offensive line when we want to do a specific scheme or run play.
00:28:32
And then Kaden, Smith and everything you represent the receiving tight end so that the balance here is very delicate.
00:28:37
And then you also talk about on the other side of the ball alone.
00:28:40
If What if you make a waiver claim? What if you bring intact? How are you making room for him? Then, when you have that guy on the roster as well, Well, and Adam to that point, I know some John fans made world arising, like why you talking about the fourth tight end? Or why you talking about the six wide receiver? Everyone matters.
00:28:56
Well, that is true.
00:28:58
But it also means that every time we keep one of these people on the roster, if we bring in someone like Tech McKinley or we activate someone like Xavier McKinney, who's gonna be coming up soon, that means there's one less active roster spot to go.
00:29:10
And when you think about what that means for our secondary, we've traded a bunch of people out you're talking about, Okay, we may have to let Madre Harper go.
00:29:17
We might have to let Adrian Colbert go.
00:29:20
Guys that have been contributing or playing, you know, significant snaps or being on special teams helping us out it, really, you know, our roster starting to narrow in terms of how Maney guys, we think could bounce around between the practice squad on the active roster.
00:29:32
And it's important when we're thinking about making a claim.
00:29:34
Like okay, if we claim this guy, then someone's got to go.
00:29:37
Yeah, and don't forget, right? Lorenzo Carter could be coming back.
00:29:41
Ocean examiners could be coming back.
00:29:43
So you're you're building up.
00:29:44
It's a lot of these are on the defensive side of the ball.
00:29:46
And also Hernandez came back as well.
00:29:48
So, you know, there's a lot of players coming back, and to your point, you know, even a guy like Yatim like you may not think it like this, but because some of the names like Colbert, who was a special teams contributor, right? And so is Madre Harper, he's in there on pump coverage.
00:30:01
So you're talking about potentially a guy like gave him who's playing 100% of the staff at the second cornerback position.
00:30:07
But once Louis is back in healthy.
00:30:08
And then you also get McKinney back.
00:30:10
That gives, uh, that's gonna give us some flexibility around Logan Ryan and where we utilize him all of a sudden, a guy that you can see and getting a lot of reps for this team could be on the outside looking in because we need to shuffle those pieces.
00:30:20
So certainly worth keeping our eye on it and monitoring as we work our way through the rest of this week and then probably into next week will be the big one.
00:30:28
Because as we hit that they think McKinney possibly after they will probably safe on the safe side the wait until after the bye week.
00:30:34
So as these guys start to roll back in, we'll watch for where the roster looks to go to adjust in account for those those those kind of weapons are real real quick.
00:30:43
Just we'll touch on on Friday.
00:30:45
But are you excited to see Pettus out there for the Giants as the new wide receiver weapon? Or has you know what I could take? Let me let me Let me Sorry.
00:30:53
Let me let me chop that one right off of the legs and say the stats bore out that Austin Mack played incredibly well.
00:30:59
The wide receiver position was the highest wide receiver grade in our group against Washington, So I like the idea of even with Pettus coming in, I like seeing that wide receiver groups solidify itself.
00:31:12
Right? Various.
00:31:13
Layton, Sterling Shepard.
00:31:14
Now Austin Mack put Pettus in there somewhere in the background.
00:31:17
Golden Tate is running around, and we, you know, start to feel good about what could be this year and into next year's group.
00:31:23
Yeah, I think the biggest, the biggest challenge for the Giants now is going to figure out how they divvy up some of these snaps.
00:31:28
I think Dante Pets hasn't had enough time to play significant snaps in this game, so I'd be surprised if you get more than I don't know seven or eight snaps out of him on the field.
00:31:38
You know, he's probably gonna learn just a handful of the routes and the route tree.
00:31:41
Uh, you know, Golden take coming back kind of moves a little bit of Austin Max snaps down.
00:31:47
You know, we said he played about 49% of the snaps.
00:31:49
I could see that more like 25%.
00:31:52
I know that's not something that you necessarily want to hear at him.
00:31:54
We want to give, you know, some time on the field and all these reps to some of our younger players.
00:31:59
But we're still looking to win games, your judges trying to win games.
00:32:02
And if he thinks that, you know Austin Mack is a complementary piece, and Golden Tate is a guy that can can you know considerably contribute to a win.
00:32:11
Tomorrow, he's going to play a little bit more.
00:32:13
So I think we're still in that win now.
00:32:16
Mode, Especially from a coaching perspective.
00:32:19
There's probably were probably a couple weeks away from All right, let's just completely focused on development of talent at this point.
00:32:25
Yeah, and by the way, Golden Tate regard the off the field stuff for the issue of the team I haven't loved.
00:32:29
I like it as a the path far contract relative to well at this point of our season, but I expect him to get his reps and by the way, I hope that it creates um, or explosive and dynamic offense where we're shuffling in reliable receivers that give different looks to the defense is so so now that starts to help Daniel Jones and this offense be, um, or varied.
00:32:50
Look, that defense is aren't quite prepared for all of sudden Austin Mack A by the Austin Max, the biggest wide receiver we have on the active roster right now, So that's important.
00:32:57
He offers a size quickness from Golden Tate.
00:33:00
All those things, so we'll keep an eye on it.
00:33:02
And obviously, we'll touch on it again on the Friday show when we preview the matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles.
00:33:07
Follow us on SportsCastr, using hashtag o g p follow us on social media at one giant podcast and is Andy Mackiewicz wants needs and demands that, you know.
00:33:19
Good job, Adam.
00:33:21
I'm proud of you. I'm excited.
00:33:23
You nailed it.
00:33:24
You practiced all day yesterday.
00:33:26
And for that, let's go.
00:33:27
Big Blue Bang that officially wraps up the show friends.
00:33:34
But we're gonna run a little bit extra here on SportsCastr as I sprung this on you, Andy.
00:33:37
But in general, usually, once we wrap the conversation bleeds over a little bit.
00:33:42
And we we, you know, maybe do a little bit of talk about a really good job.
00:33:45
You know what a great what a great show that we had there, but sometimes sparks other things like me wondering what is going toe happen with the tight end position when you have four guys there and what is going to happen at that wide receiver room like, I'm very curious.
00:33:58
For whatever reason, the tight end position actually even seems more intriguing.
00:34:01
I don't know why.
00:34:02
Well, it's good because sometimes you forget that the Giants promoted Eric Tomlinson to the active roster.
00:34:08
And then all of a sudden, you're like, Well, we're playing four tight ends.
00:34:11
Eric Tomlinson isn't really getting on the field.
00:34:13
I didn't even know that that was a roster spot.
00:34:15
And when you think about just when I think about the depth that you need in the secondary and and rotating, you know players in and out, it's tough to carry.
00:34:23
You can't You just can't carry six wide receivers.
00:34:26
You can't carry four tight ends, and you can't carry four running backs like that's just too much of your roster in three skill positions that you don't need that many people for.
00:34:34
So yeah, but so gun to your head which running back isn't staying.
00:34:41
It's got to be Alfred Morris, even even though he's run well, I think him and him and Devante Freeman really kind of play the same role Goldman kind of place.
00:34:51
That hard nose young guy that can pick up yards for you the most is the past catcher out of the backfield.
00:34:56
You've already invested a bunch of money and devante Freeman it seems like he's gonna be the guy more is to go back to the practice who have no shame on that.
00:35:03
He probably will get called up again if somebody gets hurt.
00:35:06
And then I do think, you know, CJ Board will probably get sent down because Austin Max showed enough to me.
00:35:13
Thio Warren a roster spot of this.
00:35:16
Yeah. No, it would be interesting, man.
00:35:18
I don't know.
00:35:20
I just want we'll go home and still be the starter.
00:35:24
No.
00:35:25
Yeah, And that's the hard part because you signed Devante Freeman for a reason.
00:35:30
Because you the first game when Goldman didn't look great and you give Devonta Freeman all this money.
00:35:36
Yeah, that the injury is like, Oh, but now Goldman looks good. Exactly.
00:35:41
But at the same time you got to remember, You know, there's probably gonna be a reversion to the mean for Wayne Goldman where he ends up not looking as great as he has.
00:35:50
But he's still gonna be better than he was in the first couple weeks.
00:35:52
He's somewhere in the middle.
00:35:53
I like some kind of rotational complement Anything between him and Freeman.
00:35:57
You know, let's not get too overexcited about Alfred Morris.
00:36:01
It was one game it was against the Washington football team.
00:36:03
We had the lead, So we're playing downhill a little bit.
00:36:07
It's like I don't want everyone to be like, Let's release Devonta Freeman because we're going on on.
00:36:13
Then you get six carries for five yards and, like, what did we just do? Right? You know, by the way, Goldman has some injury history.
00:36:18
Deante Freeman got hurt that you're like, you know, having the four guys is kind of like Guess what? One of these guys inevitably is gonna get hurt.
00:36:24
And it could be Alfred Morris, who's an old veteran trying get himself back into shape.
00:36:27
Ham is Watch out.
00:36:28
Right.
00:36:29
So exactly what? What? You gotta work day heading up here now.
00:36:32

00:37:14

00:37:28

Uh, be good, man. I'll catch up you on Friday.

from Brecht.
00:36:32
These busy little working I got.
00:36:33
I got a busy workday on Veterans Day.
00:36:36

00:37:26
We're gonna come in as underdogs. Probably.
00:37:28
I assume, um, and we'll just, you know, Listen, we'll see how it takes doubt and that when we be eagle, all of the sudden, that conversation rolling again around the division.
00:37:39
Uh, be good, man. I'll catch up you on Friday.
00:37:41
