Syracuse Touchdown catch.
Jason, He said, Hello and welcome to Troy.
Nunes is an absolute live cast.
This week after Clemson week, you may have noticed the the different intro.
Uh, that's in honor of Darryl Grove, a long standing member of the soccer podcasting community who, you know, touch many of us and and myself included assed faras, you know, being an inspiration for doing something like this as well as just being a genuine great guy.
So that one goes out to him.
And, uh, yeah, he played Clemson.
We played Clemson.
Ah, lot of people, including myself, did not give Syracuse much of a chance.
And I think most of the fan base came into this game with low expectations and especially the group that might be angling for a lot of change.
And then Dino Babers comes out and does what Dino Babers does against Clemson and keeps things way more interesting than they ever should be.
Um, for the record, remember how last year's the Syracuse Clemson game was going to be like this big thing? And it was going to be Clemson's first real test of the year, and they just came in and blew us out in Syracuse.
Yeah, this game was closer by every statistical measure, including the scoreline where Clemson won by 26 points, which again not necessarily close.
But considering that the line was almost, uh, exactly, Uh, this is this is just something that at this point, I think we have to kind of accept as fact.
Dino Babers has Clemson's number in the closest sense of anybody outside of Nick Saban having Clemson's number.
Which is weird to say.
For a while it was Jimbo and Florida State.
That was the hump.
They couldn't get over Ever since.
They've gotten over that hump, the only team that's consistently challenging them outside of the college football playoff.
It's Syracuse, which I don't understand.
It's, you know, we talk about dumb games.
This is a very different dumb game.
Every year, like normally are dumb Game is.
Somehow Syracuse can't get out of their own way.
Neither team could get out of their own way, and here we are, doing what we're doing.
In the case of this, I don't know how they play up to Clemson every single time, and I said it before the cast.
But like does Brent Venables just not know what todo against the Syracuse off? Like the neighbors? Briles, Whatever school of offense you want to call it like that beer and shoot just seems to get him.
So it's also fascinating because something that we were talking about and we'll definitely start digging into a little bit in the X's and O's years is that every single year against Clemson, arguably the best defense that Syracuse has played every year and probably will ever play on their schedule, the offensive line rises to the occasion.
In a very dumb way.
Thea upset the upset year was probably the highlight of that.
Were a so so offensive line legitimately handled an entire front four that went to the NFL.
This year's absolute disaster of a line had a really good game, which doesn't make any sense.
And and weirdly, like Brian crazy.
They're all world interior linemen there.
I think he was like number one or top five recruits last year.
Um, kids good on.
He had a game against us, but he still like Rex was only on his well.
He was on his case for a couple of times, but not from being sect so much outside of the one turning point in the third quarter.
But overall, like the line rose to the occasion.
And when you're playing against KJ, Henry and Myles Murphy and in this case, Brizzi it, it was.
It was a very impressive showing from five guys that sometimes this year have not been able to get out of their own way.
Yeah, I think in general I'm just confused.
Not actually, confuses isn't there isn't the correct word.
The correct word is that I'm always a little dumbfounded over how a Syracuse team with a myriad of issues goes into these games and is always so consistently their best self in a lot of ways.
And then we never see that again for the rest of the year.
On DIS was a specific instance where the they were not their best self all the way around Rex, which we knew was going to happen.
Rex really struggled in a lot of his decision making.
There were a lot of throws that he made that weren't great.
He had I will say this.
I've given him a lot of crap for saying that I don't think that he can throw deep ball, but that dime to 19 for that, a three yard touchdown was a perfectly thrown deep ball, and he definitely it has improved in a lot of those medium to long range throws that we said that he couldn't make that being said, There were still three interceptions.
That was the reason Syracuse lost the game.
And ultimately, it's It's really dumb because we shouldn't be getting into this mindset.
But like, you realize that maybe if Tommy DeVito is back there, this game is closer for longer, potentially.
We're talking about something even weirder.
Yeah, and see, that's that's right.
Well, I think we're gonna touch on later, um, which I'm gonna write down so I don't.
But I almost wonder, and I'm just gonna say this and we're gonna get off it and I'll come back to it later in the cast.
But, um, we've I've tossed it around.
You've tossed it around before.
I know a couple of guys on the site have as well.
If DeVito's in, it's a different game.
Or like last week, you know, DeVito hits a couple of those dimes that we needed to hit, and we end up beating liberty and everything's happy and hunky Dorry.
Um, the question I have is whether that is whether Gilbert would call the same game that he called for Rex.
Like if he calls that same game that he called for Rex for Tommy.
I think we improve and, you know, cause some serious consternation on Clemson's part.
However, if he's still calling that game that he called for De Vito the first couple of weeks, I don't so much think that's going to do it against Clemson or against what we saw against Liberty.
Like the ability Thio the place that he was calling.
Yes, they still shot over the top.
Yes, they were still playing those outs, but it wasn't solely relying on them.
I think Gilbert has been leaning a little heavy when DeVito was in.
I think they've been relying on those sort of plays because Tommy could make those plays instead of staying diverse in what he's looking at.
Also, Sean Tucker helps everything as we saw when he was in versus when he was out.
But I think it's a very different game and maybe we continue down that right now or we can hold it till later.
Or what? No, no, we should.
We should go down this now because ultimately, um, we'll get we'll move to the defensive side of the ball in a in a bit.
So let's stick on the offense.
And let's really dive into this because I think we've kind of seen Tony White star fade in the last few weeks just because of the defensive deficiencies that have been exposed.
And we're now kind of settling into what truly is the first year of a new offensive and defensive coordinator.
There's a lot of growing pains, and there's a lot of adjustments being made on the fly.
And Gilbert came in with some baggage.
That baggage being Cem, a failed stint at Texas and a confusing stint at USF that ended with him being a He was the head coach at MK at McNeese.
Yeah, and the reviews.
There were also, like, positive.
Yeah, so you've got a guy who's very confusing and we saw early on a lot of those reasons.
I know that you and I were both kind of watching.
It was mostly John who was getting the messages, but we all saw them from these fans were going like, Well, you know, I saw Gilbert at McNeese and, like, he never uses the tight ends.
Oh, this is that Texas offense that we all hated to see and we were there.
There was a genuine worry that this was a Dino Babers.
Not nepotism higher, but Dino basically keeping the band together, and you're even more even more so than that.
Just someone that he was comfortable with, which, Yes, he seems comfortable with Gilbert, but I don't know if it was the comfort higher if that makes sense. 100%.
And I think what we're seeing in these last couple of weeks, especially in the Clemson game, is the mind that you get with an O.
Who is a little bit more comfortable, and I don't notice everything. Gilbert's comfortable.
I think you brought up something really interesting that I hadn't fully flushed out, but now the wheels are kind of turning where your first year O. C.
You've not had a true preseason To install your offense, you're basically going to try to run what you think will have the highest upside and the highest ceiling, and ultimately your default is going to be high ceiling or high floor versus high ceiling.
And I think that's what we saw with the veto in there is that we saw a lot of plays that were, Well, if this doesn't work, it's an incompletion and no harm, no foul.
If it works, it's a touchdown and the offense scores.
And now what we're seeing with Rex, with a lot of that taken out of the playbook, you're seeing what is truly a mawr dynamic and mixed offense.
That in a full pre season, we probably would have seen earlier on with DeVito instead of now basically being forced into it.
Because Rex is the quarterback right, and it's kind of this weird mix of chicken and the egg like was Rex.
Forcing was Rex's limitations and known, uh, differences to how Tommy would approach an offense? Uh, did that forced the change? Or was the change coming? And this was about when the change was coming in and whichever way it was.
Things have looked maybe not on the scoreboard, but things have looked better the last couple of weeks from an offensive scheme standpoint.
I mean, outside of the Georgia Tech game, it's been better on the scoreboard.
Even in both losses, they put up more points.
They have been more yards in general.
Ah, lot of those, even even Syracuse efficiency, which is still pretty terrible, has gone from Oh, this could be historically bad too.
Oh, you're just bad now.
And that's a pretty big jump to make.
Relatively speaking, right? There is no more.
This is gonna be the worst.
You know, the worst on record vs.
You know, you're below average bad.
Andi, I'll take bad at this point.
Speaking of bad, Sean Tucker got hurt again.
Yeah, this isn't, um this is really tough to see, but it's also what's going to happen when a true freshman running back plays of the P five level Something again.
We were talking about this pre stream.
These guys that we're getting from Florida are incredibly talented players.
That could be it.
Any other power? Five school in the country, even the most elite.
The difference is that they'd be sitting for three years and playing their their final two at Syracuse.
You're playing right away And the reason that you're playing at Syracuse is because you have talent.
The reason that you're sipping everywhere else is because you have talent, but you don't have the size that everybody else has.
And when you don't have size and you're going up against power five teams, you tend to get hurt.
And I'm very like the reason this is very much on my mind right now is I'm wearing my Steelers, my Northwest P A gear today because the Steelers won.
But they went up against Derrick Henry, who is.
He was big in college and the fact that he has stayed big in the NFL.
The Steelers put in a second year linebacker at the NFL level because of injuries, and he just stood up.
Henry just absolutely tackled him, stood him up, and the guy left with what's looking like a broken collarbone because he was £50 undersized of Henry and took him like head on on.
And that's just goingto happen on every single play.
When you are the smallest guy and for Syracuse, our smallest guy is a running back, which is not good for long term health, right, and I mean Tucker himself even like he's what, 5.
10 to 10 to await? Yeah, so he's not a small boy.
But there's a big difference between, you know, to a at a high school.
And, you know, if he maintains to 10 you know, with a couple years of strength conditioning, it's a different to 10.
Um, you have Clemson NFL Prospect linebackers running at you and hitting you and hurting you? Um, that said he looked really, really good again, Um, six yards per carry, If I remember right against with the Syracuse offensive line vs the Clemson All World line.
Um, he was hitting holes.
He was making cuts.
That touchdown was just a beautiful unless you knew what you were looking for it.
There were two cuts on that play, and they were both very, very subtle.
Um, he right off the bat, he dips his shoulder to get up in the hole.
And then there's you can watch, Uh, just as he's about on the four yard line.
He it's like a little hip fake, and he opens up and that the D V just bites and he just cuts and goes and he doesn't have toe move.
It's like just a small, subtle shift, but he ends up effectively walking into the end zone just by opening up his hips a little.
And that's a very veteran maneuver that you don't normally see out of.
Yeah, he's legitimately probably going to be the best player that Syracuse got out of this cycle, which is going to be probably a very good class.
That is better than the star rating indicates before we get completely off on this tangent.
Um, one to point out Travis et EN and Sean Tucker are the same height and weight.
Uh, yeah, The difference is that when you put two of them next to each other, one looks like an NFL running back and the other one looks like a college running back.
And this, to your point, is exactly what we're talking about.
So just something to keep in mind? Well, this this is what we mean, Um, but to the recruiting classes, this was something that came up on Friday, and I want to give Stephen Bayley credit for it, and we kind of went off about it, and I had, like, a tweet threat about this.
That about Syracuse recruiting classes under Dino Babers and how, on the whole they've been pretty good.
There have definitely been a lot of Mrs on the top end, which have contributed to the depth issues that we're seeing this year.
However, one of those quote unquote Mrs was Rex Rex was a four star, not consensus four star, but he did have a four star rating and did not like.
He's a perennial backup and not a very good one at that.
Like, that's something that if you're Syracuse, you don't wanna miss your four star quarterback recruit, um, that you don't want that development.
But for the most recent freshman class, we're actually seeing some of that top and talent potentially get to the field and have an impact way earlier than we thought we would.
But this is a really good sign in the development of the program, considering that for the last two years we're seeing the young kids get onto the field, be good and play above their star rating and looking toward the future.
Syracuse has one of its better recruiting classes coming in this this year, and they all seem to be pretty committed and they seem to be pretty ready.
You know, take that next step at Syracuse.
Yeah, and if we're going to continue the stupid fax from Stephen Thing prior to the game, he noted that we traveled 69 players, so that's nice on then, off those 69 31 refreshment.
21 true freshman like we literally almost traveled.
I think we had 24 recruits.
I think Christian had mentioned we had 24 recruits last year, so we only have 33 true freshmen that didn't travel to Clemson and one of them, and it's because one of them opted out.
Yeah, one of them up to know.
The other two are probably hurt like we're scraping the barrel at this point for bodies.
That is so Stephen Stephen is a fantastic follow.
If for nothing else, then he's just he's just here for all of the fax.
Oh, yeah, um, the other.
The other thing.
That's weird that I know I've brought up to you guys, but I don't think I ever wrote anything out.
I was going thio, Um, but I figured last week we had enough of the state of the program type posts, including, Let's see, I had one.
Kevin had one. She had one.
Everybody was just like hold pump the way.
Need to get back on track here.
Um, the how to phrase that Dean O's first offensive line recruiting class and I broke down the numbers.
And actually, I have to hold on one second.
I have to go get this.
So you see the notes of a madman.
I do appreciate that you have taken over the kiss.
Now that Castillo has two kids and you only have one kid.
You have taken over the I'm going to devote way too much time Thio Syracuse football minutia.
So there's the stupid notes of all Dino Babers.
Offensive line recruiting classes.
The year by year.
Uh, yeah, it z interesting.
Um, in 2016 we had four recruits.
Every year we've had what, 44123456 and five players come in on the offensive line.
The first year you had Sam Heckle Aaron Service, Liam O Sullivan and Mike Clark.
I may not remember some of those names.
I was going to say the one that's the one that's actually bugging me is Liam O. Sullivan.
I do not remember that name.
Sullivan was a rent, so he was recruited in 16 and 17.
He was the backup right tackle and then Medical Decode a za redshirt freshman.
He was the backup right tackle.
And then, medically, d cute Sam heckle last year.
Medically, ****, You'd Mike Clark who was the backup tackle medically, be cute.
Three of the four offensive lineman that he brought in his first year.
That would have been Richard seniors this year.
All were medically disqualified out.
The next year, you have Pat Davis, Dakota Davis, hurt hurt and Austin Chandler, who I believe graduated, Um, 2018.
You had Kadeer White hurt veteran low alive Gabe Horn, who was a medical de que, even though he was playing tight end last year.
Hey, medically, be cute for concussions Will, for me hurt.
Uh, Ryan Kissel Stein, who was a walk on and was actually in the end of the game yesterday, and Cody Martin was the transfer.
And then last year you had Bergeron, Tisdale, Anthony Red season ending injury Josh Coastal and Ryan Alexander.
We know how that went.
Eso It's gonna like we've had some We've had hits like most of, like heckle O'Sullivan Clark service.
That's a solid offensive line.
If you get to the field, it's a hit.
It's just that some of these guys aren't getting to the field right.
Like of the first to like what should be his senior class.
One of them has currently made it through this year.
Wow, like how it's and I don't want to like.
This is something that is way outside my depth and something that, um, there used to be a really good Twitter account.
And then he got picked up by some team and he doesn't tweet anymore.
Who did, like sports, sports, science and sports health kind of tracking.
And there is definitely, I think, something going on with the alignment, especially where they're either The training regimen isn't quite lined up or they're not quite getting the right guys.
I'm not sure because this is becoming This is a trend now.
This has been four years of this happening, but we expected it early on as we were transitioning from, you know, pro style stand up block get to the second level every once in a while to we're now going to run up tempo and be fast.
Um, I would like I was having a conversation with this with my boss, was a Syracuse fan, and we were kind of talking.
And I think, uh, Cavanaugh has clearly been out on the recruiting trail.
I think he is somebody who is close to Dino.
If there was going to be a way to kind of kick Cavanaugh upstairs into some kind of recruiting support role or something like that and then bringing a different offensive line coach maybe one who's worked at a team that has specifically run this uptempo style offense and he has a little bit more experience with those types of linemen.
But I also don't think that that's something that you could easily go out and do, especially this upcoming off season.
It's not something that's going to be readily available.
I don't think we're going to see as much coach movement as we normally dio.
No, and, um, okay, coming in hot here.
Uh, I don't see any reason.
Cabin. I should be fired.
I mean, from from from the ins and outs and what's actually going on on the field.
I don't see any issues from the somebody needs to be a scapegoat.
He's going to be the first name that comes up on everybody's list.
But from what he's doing with what he's dealing with, the line has been like Go trick.
It's not like I devote enough time to staring with they.
They've been looking better weekend week out.
Uh, the only player that I would that I would say that has actually regressed has been service.
And other than that, we've been like even last year.
It was a situation where people were playing out of position, but there was improvement as the year went along.
And this year has has been a little bit of that.
But especially like Bergeron, the most promising prospect had to switch positions.
Yeah, but to a more important position, the so service for one.
Let's lay it out there for one.
There's a rumor that he might be carrying a knock, like if he's playing through pain that's, you know, more on like props.
There's nothing it would explain some of the issues that we've been seeing with him the last couple of weeks. Yeah.
Um, I still don't like the way he uses his hips.
He he utilizes his body a lot more like the interior lineman, which he was for a lot of years.
So, um, that's and I'm probably the only person that knows what I mean when I say that, but he the way his hips, the way he actually holds his hips square or doesn't hold his hips square opens things up.
You're not as susceptible to that when you're on the interior.
Uh, he's he's not a great kick stepper, which is again, something you're not as susceptible to on the interior.
Um, I I thought he was an okay center.
I didn't think he worked well last year with.
So there was a cascading issue last year where Dakota Davis kind of had to pick up some of the round Alexander Slash which opened up the gap because I think you remember, I used I was, like, honing in on that service in Dakota.
Davis Gap is a major weakness, and I think in hindsight, it was kind of outside and issues.
And this year, uh, the interior is short up quite a bit, even with a full back in there.
Which, by the way, I Elmore left the game part with an injury.
Uh, he was back in.
Okay, good. Of course. Well, he was out.
You know, Joshua Loa made Rex run for his life, but that's a true freshman in his, like, literal second game stint ever.
Oh, but yeah, I looked at him like other words out.
Oh, yeah, right over the guard.
That's not good.
So the minute that I heard the Elmore out there, like, is limping off the field thing, I was like, Steve is rolling over right now. Just watching.
Watching this e went from trying to type up my three takeaways, too.
E was like a frickin marmot.
Uh, it really was something.
Um, yeah, I think I think in general, um, we We've really got a lot of different ways in this offense, and it's because the offense is still probably the problem area of this team because there's still a lot of pieces that aren't fitting quite right.
And the final piece that I really want to talk about is the wide receivers, both you and I for the last few weeks have been really harping on.
There needs to be someone other than Taj.
There needs to be someone other than Taj this week.
Taj was not with the team.
So therefore, somebody other than Taj had to step up in the receiving game.
And obviously Nike team had the big play.
Uh, but I'm curious to your thoughts, because for me, if you look at the box score, nobody really stands out.
And if you were watching the game, nobody really did anything super amazing that made you go.
Yeah. We're gonna be OK.
To a degree, um, quickly, definitely looked.
Looked the part of the next in line.
Um also fits that outside receiver mold much better than someone like Tasha's.
Uh, also, we hadn't at Hendrick citing, and hundreds experience was okay, like I'm not gonna complain.
You're playing against Clemson's DBS that zone animal.
But he's a big body.
And if we can, you know? Yes, he's been around the program two years now, but he's also been injured for a good chunk of those.
So if we can get him some game time and turn him into a go up and get it type guy with the body and frame like he's got.
Then you know you've got another issue.
Got another, uh, cost.
Go find the ball type guy.
Throw it up to a point.
So I those those to kind of stood out to me.
Cheryl Johnson still stands out in other ways.
I think there's something weird because every time he tries to run that same route, it looks like he's giving up on the rope and he's usually open or has man beat and it's really confusing to me.
I mean, this week it was Rex didn't put the ball in a catchable position, but we've seen kind of something similar where he drifts.
Or something happens when Tommy, too.
So, yeah, I think, in general quickly is another just like prototypical Syracuse receiver.
He's you know, he's undersized and wait, but he's 62 and he's got He's just got some jump and he's got a lot of athleticism, and he's a floor undersized Florida kid that is going to probably be good by a senior year.
He's a redshirt sop****re.
So give him a full season.
Give him a full offseason, and I think that he could be that next guy.
It's It's really, I think, what What? Syracuse is missing and we and Bailey again hit on it in his recruiting piece is that we don't have a true big target in the in the sense that, um, Patata, while really was where he was, a 210 6 ft four guy who could use his size to get a ball that was under thrown or as long as it was one on one.
They were going to come down with something with ish.
It was a little bit smaller, but he had, like, that guy knew how to use his body in ways that is beyond his years, and you wouldn't believe like that he was.
He was just such a smart receiver.
If there's just so much intelligence to his game and not saying that these guys don't have that, but they haven't really shown it and none of them, really.
We've got a lot of slot receivers, Um, and yet none of them have really again.
A slot receiver rolls another role where you need to have, Like, a lot of intelligence.
You need to have a lot of field awareness, and none of them have really shown it an extended period of time.
Um, I think, ah, lot of the redshirt freshman that we have are kind of that next, uh, they're they're the next wave to kind of take it.
But this isn't that you do it because Taj is playing that hybrid role.
Like if you could have quickly on the field being a deep guy and you can have Taj bi a NFL size slot guy, that's probably better for your offense.
I've yelled this numerous times.
I would absolutely love to just take e help.
Put Vincent out there.
Yeah, he's a freaking huge body that can go beat anybody on the ground and his hands Throw him out wide.
Um, but you have, like, put Hendrix and brain clearly a wide throw Taj in the slot like we saw last week, which was that was something I really enjoyed.
I was like, Okay, you're using them in the middle on these mismatches.
Tage against the linebacker versus Taj against the cornerback are two very, very different things.
And if we can find a way to make make mismatches like that, it changes how the offensive, where the hope the entire offensive looks Now you did talk about size and that most of our depth is, you know, Courtney Jackson.
That came Johnson Taj.
Like it's all that slot style guy.
This year's recruiting class was the Mari Hatcher.
Around against him, too.
I can read the 2nd 641 90.
Also, I'm very old when I could remember around it gets and playing in the league like a million bang 6 ft seven tight end.
And also the greatest name ever.
The Sorcerer Supreme.
I cannot wait to see him on the field.
Um, Kendall Kendall Long 63 to 15.
Like there they're building.
They're building the depth where they need to build the depth.
It's just again.
This is this is the This was not the year to be pressing young bodies into service early.
Um, but it is, and so they kind of have to deal with what they got.
And some of these kids just aren't ready yet, And the ones that are are still learning the ropes and things, especially on the offense.
It's it's there's gonna be a steep learning curve.
There's gonna be a lot going on.
I think we've talked plenty about the offense.
So let's take a quick little ad break here before we start 32nd time out before home field.
Jacoby Morgan got snacks.
We should probably do that because we spent two episodes ago one episode ago talking about who the hell was the backup on DNA? We found out figured out there were reports last week that Morgan was gonna be the two.
Um, he definitely was.
The man on the field way saw him on the field to your point that you said pre stream.
Not a small human being, which ain't bad thing.
Especially just gonna get it.
Oh, yeah, way didn't seem throw anything.
It was, you know, end of game run out the clock type mode.
Uh, and also we had our to line in, which is to walk on a true freshman and no to true freshman and an undersized tackle.
So probably a good thing that we didn't, you know, let him let it loose because it wasn't gonna work out.
Well, it was awesome to see those guys get some, get some run.
But you know, uh, not not the best time toe trained. Light it up.
Yeah, and I think it's important to kind of, like realize that out of all the backups, Jacoby in is a He's a big kid, and he's a a style quarterback.
Uh um, summer, Uh, something that John's been saying on the site forever.
But at this point, if your summers and you can pass up by a true freshman, there's there's really no point Goto Max school Goto, you know, f FCS school and actually get some playing time.
And then that we'll be coming back again.
You Syracuse you never know, man.
You never know on that means that Yeah, that was the Andrew Andrew Robinson role to.
We've We've had more than one quarterback do that, haven't we? Wow, this We need to stop doing that.
Just just I'm not a football guy, but like, e would assume that we would need to stop doing that.
Strangely enough, my starting quarterback in college also turned into a tight end.
It's just that I don't get it, But whatever do your thing? Do you think kind of a football coaches? But then that guess I think that that means that s a look.
MacPhail Isa Walk on, Big Kid.
He's probably preferred walk on status and he's Yeah, and great size.
Good to have around.
Probably a great practice body.
And then that means that Dylan Markovich Dark Dylan Markovitz He is the third stringer.
Um, he's the Texas kid that were that was Gilbert's big get that we're not really sure of.
Um, it doesn't surprise me that he's probably the backup, mostly because that Texas style, uh, compared to an A c C style is going to be a lot of a lot of changes, especially behind the line that Syracuse has.
So I think all in all this is really good.
We should probably mention while I furiously google it Right now, there is rumors that Syracuse is after a transfer.
And, yes, thief Eric Dungey 2.
0, basically the and and as we kind of talked about this Jacoby in being a true freshman who is not going to throw the ball anytime soon.
Um, this probably makes sense in terms of getting him and mark of it's a little bit more time Thio season and learn and not be thrown into a position where they would have to play Should DeVito go down next season, Which, I mean, DeVito hasn't played a full, hasn't played a full year.
When's the last time we had a quarterback play a full season? It's a great question.
Did Dungy start all games last year? For two years ago? I feel like pressure.
I'm pretty sure DeVito started the Florida State game.
He came in for the Florida State game.
He didn't start the Florida State game.
I don't think Oh, the kid's name is Garrett Schrader.
Okay, Yeah, Mississippi State quarterback who has been moved to a wide receiver under the leech system.
Um, this is I'm double checking right now, but I think the Florida State game, uh, that was that.
Yeah, that was It's really weird because Google shows the final ranking of the team instead of their day, their day of ranking.
So it says, like number 15 Syracuse, which is really throwing me off.
I'm like, Wait, we were number.
Oh, yeah, We finished that year ranked 15th in the country.
2019 was his first start, so yeah.
So eight games is the primary backup for country and 18.
So, yeah, I was gonna say Dungy was hurt a lot in 2018.
Um, but I don't think I don't I don't think.
But DeVito won the North Carolina game.
He held on lead for the Florida State game.
And I feel like I'm forgetting one other game where DeVito had a pretty solid contribution, but I can't remember it.
So we're gonna We're gonna Yeah, we're gonna run with that.
Hey, home field. Yeah.
Let's talk home field.
They're really comfy.
Not our specialty.
God, they were would be getting paid to do this more.
But home field has given us some really nice T shirts.
I'm rocking the rocking a fur coat because slippery rock.
And similarly, the Syracuse Classic 19 nineties.
I don't know what the hell to describe it is, but it's a really cool logo.
That's literally how described it, uh, in the first call that I had with him.
He's like, we've got that really cool logo that I don't know how to describe it.
I'm like, Oh, yeah, the one with the square in the middle.
He's like, Yeah, so they're fantastic.
They're really comfy clothes.
Um, T shirts, hoodies.
They have joggers like they just rolling out.
They unveiled five new schools this past week.
They are still need that.
The u C. Irvine.
Uh, yeah, I actually I was going to order I talked to you last week.
I put a couple of that I was gonna order.
And lo and behold, my wife just got her brother Evita to go shirt because data to go.
But I think I think I need to grab in Evita or that North Dakota State one that we were talking about.
But I had to hold off.
Yeah, the one that looks like the Padres logo.
But I had to hold off because I knew u C.
Irvine was dropping with the Anteaters, and I was like, they're gonna have something that's gonna be cool to sell.
And they dropped that ant eater baseball shirt and I was like, Yeah, I think I'm gonna need that.
It's their baseball shirts are few and far between, but the ones that they have are fantastic.
They've got two lane one with the pelicans on both ends.
The like the ST Louis Cardinals one, which is which is great.
Andi, I really like the Fresno State stuff there, Bulldog.
The baby blue shirt with the old bulldog on it. Fantastic.
So, as you can tell, you don't even need to, like, really be a fan of the schools.
The designs are just that cool and right.
Like they use all the retro logos and that.
So it's the obscure like I would just have an anteater on my shirt.
Nobody would have a clue that it's u C. Irvine.
No, it just looks funny.
And their number one shirt of the year to date is Thebes to Elaine.
Angry wave because everything is two Lane and John and Dan were right s.
You guys want 10% off your order Promo code.
You got it? Yeah.
So, uh and u N e s for 10% off your order and thanks again to the guys at home field.
And, uh, yeah, enjoy.
Because we dio there's so comfortable. E.
I just want to make that clear, Like that's not just not saying it like it's just really comfortable T shirts.
And as somebody as we're all stuck in this work from home life as we started to move into the cold weather months, uh, their stuff is specifically made for Syracuse people.
Yeah, yeah, I definitely think I'm grabbing ahold of at some point, so it's gonna be needed.
Um, I was gonna try to make some cold joke, but I'm just not going to try.
We're gonna talk some defense now.
Uh, Tony White's defense got shredded, quote unquote shredded again for the third week in a row.
However, this time we were all expecting it.
And overall, the defense was the primary reason that we were in this game, because I want to point this out.
Last week you and I talked on the Stream about how Travis et en has just destroyed the orange in his career.
He did it again.
However, he really had to work hard for this one Instead of getting all the stats in the first half like we thought he would dio e t n had three touchdowns.
He had some solid yardage, but for the most part, Trevor Lawrence, like he really struggled by Trevor Lawrence standards in this game.
I specifically in remembering the overthrown ball that was a dropped pick by Ahmad Greenwood, which would have been yeah, twice, twice, twice.
No, I'm saying he dropped that pick twice.
Andi, I'm just thinking in my head like there were a lot of like Lawrence did not look comfortable, even though the pass rush wasn't great.
I think in a lot of that was something that you brought up earlier, and I kind of want you elaborate on.
It more is the cornerbacks, even though they're undersized and they're not necessarily your prototypical NFL sized guys went up against NFL receivers and shut them down.
I mean, if he's gonna be iffy, we knew that was that's gonna be a thing all year.
Um, it's funny when you listen to all these broadcasts and we're like, you know, if you had to mellow font, who is probably one of the better cornerbacks in the league, and nobody's talking about it and we're just sitting here like we've been talking about way no he's legit.
But the Garret Williams coming out party happened this weekend when he blank it'd, uh, numerous times.
I e l O God, What's this name? That stud receiver number three.
Yeah, there we go.
You wouldn't think like he Rogers just pulled it up because thank you.
Um, Rogers finished with 121 yards.
Tee Higgins, actually, 150 which I didn't see.
I don't know where that happened, but Rogers finished for 121 with that 87 yarder.
So, like, there were two plays that I distinctly remember watching Gary Williams and being like that was an NFL play.
The one deep all the Rogers over the top, where he high point of the ball went up like Rogers was in stride.
Like it wasn't like he came back for it.
He was in stride.
Lawrence put that ball where it needed to be.
And Williams just went up and over and said, No, it was like, Okay, this kid's this kids good.
And then the other was the post across the middle, where I don't know whether his Rogers or Higgins or who had it, But he Williams literally just never gave up and stripped the ball as it was going to the ground like they were both diving for it and he popped the ball loose when he was going to the ground.
It's like those air to NFL place right there, and they kept trying to take advantage of.
They weren't throwing it iffy, and they were trying to take advantage of that and they weren't able to.
I think it's I think it's just a testament again to what this defense has kind of been built up as they've done the shifting to the 335 even though there is some still issues with run defense, which was going to happen this week, regardless because of Travis et en, um 335 fits the personnel that this that this unit has.
They have the ability to play man on the outside place, Um, zone, have some rovers give you some weird looks.
And overall, um shaken in the Southland again had a great piece.
This'll week about the 335 that Syracuse uses, which is basically a 335 stack that relied on Andre Cisco as the rover, not just because of his coverage abilities but because of his abilities to support the run defense, which once he went out the run defense kind of suffered because of it.
But we're still seeing that the athletes that are in the system right now can pass, defend, and they can cover anybody like they're definitely not gonna be playing this well every single week.
That being said, they're all really young, So give them, You know, next year if he might be.
If he's gone, he's going to go NFL.
He'll probably get picked and, you know, Day two or Day three, but there's everybody else is gonna be sticking around.
And there were gonna be even better next year.
So I did the stupid thing of try and pull up the stats on the fly.
By the way, um, receiving Rogers had 91 yards.
Tee Higgins graduated.
That's why I was like I didn't see that anywhere.
Like, why did I not remember that name? Cornell Powell was who I was trying to think of.
Hay was the other guy that went for he only went for 45 but I mean a team that got that was supposed to get gash on the ground.
Only gave up 145 yards.
Yeah, it's in 74 37 net.
Yeah, et en had his had his three touchdowns.
As as one is going to dio.
But, like again, I thought e under 100 yards.
It's I was really impressed with this.
Like Trevor Lawrence threw the ball 43 times and Onley completed 27 of them by quarterback rating.
Um, he was not very.
He was average like he and Rex were.
You know, Rex did not have a great game by any stretch of the imagination.
But, you know, ESPN rating grades Trevor Lawrence as, like, slightly above average and Rex is below average.
And that, to me, is accurate of how the game unfolded.
And I think it's gonna be really frustrating because I think that's what we could say about defense.
I don't think there's a ton much more to say, Um, because next week Syracuse is playing Wake Forest, which prior to this weekend we would have gone okay.
Even though Syracuse is terrible, this is the chance for win number two and then Wake Forest went out and knocked off Virginia Tech, who is has been dealing with covert issues all season long, and we're still pretty depleted but had been winning games.
And for some reason, Wake Forest figured out how toe beat them.
If you're Syracuse and you're trying to get a team, that's maybe not feeling so hot and weak forces coming in with all the confidence in the world.
You know, um, as we dio always, uh, I don't know, Wake Wake surprising.
I mean, but look, a look at Florida State.
They did the same thing two weeks ago where it was just like they look like garbage.
They look like garbage.
They look like garbage.
So I really don't know what to take from the A. C. C.
This year is just gonna be a complete crapshoot.
I don't know everything like we're past Clemson.
So literally from here on out, just flip a god**** coin.
Uh, Notre Dame game.
There's nothing on this schedule that, like, if you were Thio, go to me in the future and go.
Syracuse did this with the remainder of their schedule.
I would probably agree with you, no matter what you said, because every team that Syracuse plays from here on out has the same struggles that Syracuse does, where they've got some top end talent, not a ton of down or if they do have depth, it's really young.
So everybody's in the same boat.
The difference is, is that obviously their depth is and their talent is a little bit more high end, but not enough that you're like, Oh, yeah, they're gonna walk all over Syracuse.
I pretty much expect every circus will not be favored from here on out.
But, like the spread shouldn't be more than, like 7 to 10 points.
Like everything that could be another 45 point.
No, we're done with that.
We're done with that until Notre Dame comes around.
But you look at another game we thought was wonderful. Moving forward.
They just house Florida State, who the week before we thought was legit again.
So stupid is going to happen in this league and wait, didn't it's not like wait dismantled, uh, attack by any stretch like it was what single score game 23 toe 23 63 16.
Literally. So, yeah.
Yeah, so it's not like they ran the doors off him on.
But it's a team like you said.
I don't know way.
Have them in the dome or we traveling to North Carolina.
I believe they're coming to the Dome.
I'm literally on their ESPN page.
Yeah, it's at Syracuse.
It's a nooner because we're playing.
We're playing at noon for the rest of the year.
Whether you like outside of outside of Louisville and Notre Dame, there's no we're not going to see anything other than a nooner.
Yeah, and s a Wake Forest eso And like, here's he was probably the worrying part.
Wake Forest has played five games this year.
Um, they're three and 2/8 in the A C.
Their quarterback has 1000 yards passing.
He is averaging eight yards, uh, per completion on.
Lee has three touchdowns on the year, which means they are running the ball lot.
And they have Yeah, they have two running backs that are getting the bulk of the carries.
Kenneth Walker, the third, and Christian Bill Smith Walker, the third, has eight touchdowns in five games.
Bill Smith has another four touchdowns with two more running backs, getting two more touchdowns.
They just run the ball down your ****ing throat.
They've got 865 rushing yards on the year so far.
We all know what's gonna happen.
They're going to run at Syracuse, they're going to run at Syracuse and they're going to run at Syracuse.
And Sam Hartman is gonna throw a pick.
Patrol Williams for the win.
I mean, there's a really good chance that this plays out exactly the same way that last year's Wake Forest game There definitely is a chance.
Andi, Speaking of that trill, where was he? I we have okay, I have zero sourcing for this.
This is true conspiracy theory.
We haven't heard his name a lot.
He's definitely gotten some of the snaps.
I think there might be something going on there.
There might be a more like maybe a service level injury there that we're not hearing about that he's trying to play through.
And unlike Service who there is no other option to play there, we have other defenses, actually, yeah, so that might be part of the reason why we've been seeing less and less of them, right? And it's funny, like the Liberty Game where we kind of that would that would totally tracked with the We broke glass in case of emergency, whereas against Clemson, we travel him if we in case we need to travel him like, absolutely need to for a body.
But beyond that, like the secretary was functioning fine.
So and it stinks, too, because I think this is a conversation that we will have.
It doesn't behoove us to have it now, but maybe later in the year will need to have it.
Is trail coming back because there is somebody who is fits very well in the modern NFL but hasn't done ah whole lot of anything this year to kind of give him enough tape to make that jump and get drafted.
In a year where there's probably not going to be a true combine and pro days, are you almost always viewed with so many layers of skepticism? Yeah, I mean, you've got you've got If he who's also in that conversation, though, he is going to have enough tape, Um, you know, what does he do week.
He's I believe he's a redshirt sop****re, right? I'd be redshirt Junior, I think.
But it doesn't matter, because you get Yeah, but doesn't matter, because you get the extra year of eligibility anyway.
So, like he could all these. Oh, no.
I'm saying for is he draft eligible? Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
So, um Okay, so yeah, he would be, um yeah, I don't know.
I mean, it's a weird, weird situation for both of them, right? And and you think about it.
And now that Cisco's out like this is your time to shine and kind of like, make your statement as the as the number one guys.
Um, but in trills case, he's not really able to.
And if he's case, everyone's just avoiding him and therefore they're not talking about him.
So it's gonna be, I think I think that that's something that later in the season will really kind of dig into.
Um, once the NFL has kind of figured out how they're going to do there, because, again, I, in my opinion, they're both people who, if there is a combine their 100% going, they'll get the combine invites.
They'll do really well at the combine and sneak into the drafts if there's no combine.
If there's potentially NFL does what MLB does did and has a condensed draft in some way, shape or form.
Yeah, that completely changes their decision making process.
Yeah, something to worry about on the defense if you didn't need.
But that's like and that is our offseason talk when Stephen are going to full dumb offseason mode.
Oh yeah, and I'll take.
I'll take offensive offseason talk like that all day.
Listen, guys, going pro is not something that we typically have to worry about it.
Syracuse, right, guys leaving to go pro.
It happens a lot on the soccer field.
What is it, six years in a row? We've had a generation of these guy inside.
Yeah, So what's so Yeah, Actually, it's perfect transition Syracuse soccer because we're gonna talk about this because we're starting to move to the back half of the season and things are gonna get interesting.
They drew Virginia Tech down a man the entire game are not entire game, but most of the game 56 minute, believe Yeah, something like that.
So that's a big deal to, like actually do that.
And it might not be the end result that you wanted in terms of standings, but in the vacuum beginning, you know, honestly, getting a result on the road in the a c.
No matter what is not an easy feat and to do it down a man for a good chunk of the second half, like Anthony Sinclair really needs to learn how to stay on speed.
He's already carrying a yellow Hey, had it was a weird as it was a beautiful tackle like Thio.
His first attempt aan den.
He got up and went at the guy ball fell to, and he just now didn't didn't look good.
So yeah, overall, the team's kind of starting to find itself.
I think Sandra nor Heim had his first goal of the season.
Nice header in the first half.
Um, yeah, it was, uh, overall, it was a solid effort, like you can't especially without without normal rules and for college soccer to have to go to overtimes, like to have to play extra time with golden goal rule.
And to hold that down a man itself like, yeah, and it's frustrating because there is still looking for their first win on the season, however, both of their losses and their draw against Louisville.
All three of those, you could have argued were points dropped, especially the Notre Dame game where the officiating was, and the Louisville game, which was just all levels of frustrating.
Yep, so e mean can't overstate.
You know what, Mac and those those guys were doing there like It's a hell of a program and, you know, hopefully they keep it up can push forward.
I think if I remember right there, I know the women have cut it to do a hybrid season.
Spring fall are false.
I think the men are following suit where I think there's only six or eight games this fall, and then they'll play a short season in the spring into the answer. Double a tournament.
Other Other schools are doing everything in the spring.
Yeah, Syracuse has two more games left to make it six.
They have to go and both are on the road at Virginia at Pitt, although whether or not the pit game happens is pit seems to be show up.
Yeah, you know, and then there.
And then there's the A C C Championships, which are slated for this fall, which they just might do two championships like very really they might.
And Syracuse is in a position where this is definitively a team that could go on a run for no god**** reason.
Yeah, that's, you know, standards.
Get through the season and then wing it from there.
This is why I listen.
Syracuse soccer's when were fun and following ours.
And I'll give you that.
I mean, if you have seen that Chelsea and Game on the weekend I had for enjoyment watching the issue game Thistle is why we have multiple sports on DSO.
Sometimes they all just suck.
So this is where we're at.
Um, that's been an hour because, of course it's been, and this somehow it always happens.
And somehow we are able to talk about Syracuse sports mostly football and soccer for a solid period of time.
Just like five things that we could have talked about, that I had written down that we didn't so magic.
We cut it for everybody else insanity.
But oh my gosh, yes! Also my wife.
Let's Let's be on.
There isn't really a one bedroom apartment with listening to me.
Talk about Syracuse Sports Eyes is a special kind of married welcome to marriage life.
So, yeah, this is why this is why envy everybody up in central New York.
Even though you guys have snow, you have ba*****ts.
Wonderful s Oh, this is, uh this was our wake Forest clubs and recap Wake Forest preview.
Um, you and Kevin and Christian will be on the Wake Force pregame again on Saturday at 11.

So cakes at noon.
So you guys will be on 11.
I guarantee you that watching your preview show is way more interesting and way more informative than whatever the A C C network is gonna throw on before that, uh, whatever mess of the game we're we're gonna have a somebody who has watched it and then watch the A.
If nothing else, you'll get a very Syracuse specific usually will run down through our like the five things to watch for over the week.
Um, usually, it's some screwball thing from you and John that we all get tripped up on.
Like, Oh, yeah, I guess we could talk for a while on that s o top 10.
Worst losses in SC program history that I had way too much fun writing.
Uh, listen, there's you gotta laugh of the pain.
So the preview show right here on SportsCastr with With You and Kevin and Christian tune in to it.
Get it? It's just It's the better pregame show.

Thank you for supporting us on the Sunday night If you're watching the replay tomorrow morning.
I hope that we brought a little bit of something to the beginning of your work week.
And we will be right back here next Sunday to talk about whatever happens in the Wake Forest game because something is going to happen.
And hopefully it's something positive, But we'll be ready in case, you know, the wheels started falling off.
Why not? I think that's where we're gonna be here.
No matter What? So worst case we'll find something else stupid to talk about.
Probably scare you soccer because that you've a game is going to be.
It'll be something.
Yeah, I'm kind of I'm morbidly excited.
Yeah, well, Syracuse sports on that note.
Thank you for talking to me.
Go orange, guys.
We'll see you next week.
