Attorney Yard touchdown catch with a degree of difficulty and millions is an absolute magician.
You slip Hello and welcome to another week of the Detroit News is an absolute magician pregame show, uh, joined, as always with their myself.
Steven Taylor are Cristian Guzman and Kevin Wall.
How we doing today? Yes, pretty good.
A trying Which cross players are gonna be the best football players in the coming weeks? Uh oh, boy, it's one of those days, right? So, Christian, we got some news here that doesn't bode well for Syracuse is already slim campus.
It cleanses today.
What do we got? S So for those of you haven't been on social media, um, there have been confirmed reports, uh, so that Todd Harris did not travel with the team to South Carolina.
This is all after with the incident at the end of the Liberty game, where he was caught showing the middle finger to a broadcast camera.
And, um, after dina was kind of hush hush about how exactly they were going to discipline Taj.
Now, you you probably knew there was gonna be some sort of discipline that was gonna come through But after he was kind of Russia's during the during his weekly press conference on Monday, Now it's confirmed he just won't play because he's not even in South Carolina.
So the slim chances that Syracuse had against Clemson got significantly slimmer.
And we'll need We'll probably need Mawr Infinity Stones than we could possibly imagine.
Toe Now, Now that touches Not in the game.
Maybe a little bit of a harsh penalty, but the dreaded team team rules, raises its head.
And so you talked in your five things to watch for was offensive wrinkles.
So now we've taken.
Syracuse is best offensive player, best receiving threat and the guy that both Tommy DeVito and Rex Culpepper have had locked out locked onto with laser focus this season.
What can the Orange due to move the ball against this cleansing defense? Well, I think Steve mentioned in his three takeaways last week after the Liberty game, and that was that Sterling Gilberts played calling actually look better than it has in the previous weeks.
We saw um, or different variety of place.
It wasn't all the defaults of the field that we saw against Duke.
It wasn't all the runs up the middle that we saw in the first two games of the season.
I think we want to see more of that.
May be more variety in terms of how you get the ball to Sean Tucker in the run game or variety on how coal peppers per Seaver's run rounds, if it's more so that you try some more shots of the middle than the sideline passes that Culpepper hasn't seemed that he could hit in terms of his accuracy.
I mean, we've seen multiple times against the liberty in the Liberty came the Culpeper sideline.
Accuracy kind of leaves a lot to be desired.
So can you give him, uh, the opportunity to throw balls off the middle of the field on DNA? Even with Todd Harris? God, this is This brings an opportunity as well for the other guys on the roster.
This is what I mentioned in the latter part of my takeaways.
It gives an opportunity for the other guys on the roster, your Justin barons of the world to show up and prove that they're willing to make a play against opposition that significantly tougher and significantly more physical against you So does.
Does the young players take advantage of that opportunity and prove that they can not only be contributors this season, the contributors in the following season to something that I think the coaching staff will also watch carefully.
So as those wrinkles in the play, calling those wrinkles in the dynamic potential of some of the of the young guys that are relative unknowns and want to make a play against the number one team in the country? Yep, that was my thing.
To watch for two was the young guys because, like it or not, cleansing isn't going anywhere.
I don't think we're going to get any divisional realignment.
So the orange you're gonna see the Tigers each each season moving forward.
They are the class of not only the A, C C, but among teams in the country.
And so you want to see how these young guys, they're gonna respond on the road against the number one team, you know, shorthanded, maybe for us into things a little bit early.
But that compete and Steve, you touched on that too.
And yours was setting the tone.
Onda, how to Syracuse come about Try and make this a game early.
Yeah, that's but there's no easy way to cut that.
That's going to be a struggle.
Um, one thing that does slightly help ever so slightly is I think you had mentioned in the slide pregame.
Clemson has, uh, noted two guys carrying knocks that are gonna be starting e believe Tyler Davis, the defensive lineman, And then I can't remember which linebacker One.
So a big piece of the puzzle there, um likely filling in for them Are Coach Venables some because all of them are on the roster.
Jake Venables e.
I was like Tyler Tyler Tyler.
He's the safety.
Which one's the linebacker on, Ben? Uh, actually, someone who's looked better in the past rush Jordan Williams this year, filling in for Tyler Davis, who was pretty much in all world run stopper.
Um, so we go from in all world run stopper being in there who was good pass rush to a arguably.
According to Pff, their best pass rusher on the interior is getting more stamps.
So, uh, here's to mildly hoping they play the starters for a quarter.
Way to curb street sons and they became.
So that's what I was gonna have to score more touchdowns.
Uh, sweetie, but Davos son or the two herb street boys? Um, if Rex if Rex tries to throw a couple over the middle, it might be Venable son.
So, uh, but yeah, that whole Christian like you were saying And I know I'm completely off where you tried Thio.
But like you mentioned anything outside we noticed last week again, as we have seen earlier in the year, Rex probably looked a little bit better and from those out routes, but he still doesn't have remotely the accuracy of someone like Tommy.
So I think Gilbert is probably going to try to try to take the offensive little more interior.
We did see him utilize quickly a lot more than we have seen.
Try and target him so that that kind of without Taj is probably your number one outlet.
Just from what we've seen.
Um, not necessarily.
You know, the number one on the depth chart, but the number one that we've seen targeted from Rex I would like to see more barren.
He had that one.
You know nice route.
That was a drop against liberty.
But him and some of the other young guys would be very good to mix in there.
And that Aaron drop wasn't necessarily on him.
That was pretty.
That was a pretty pretty good employed by the defense.
But maybe something more like that, because that was a good route up the middle.
And I think even though Culpepper's accuracy was kind of shoddy, as we've seen, maybe more chances like that up the middle, because we saw how effective slants were with Vienna.
If those return with Culpepper because we didn't see a lot of those against Liberty.
Some of those Slam points could help Syracuse generate a little bit of offense against Clemson and maybe give them a good benchmark on how to effectively run that play in later games.
Yeah, and something like the slants also doesn't leave Rex's arm kind of hanging out there.
Those outs are very you've got to put some sauce on it.
Where is this, Lance? You know, you've got the guy coming to the ball versus heading away from it.
So doesn't give the defense as much of a timeto react to read and react toe what's going on? So definitely probably look for more of that.
And hopefully look for more delays and utilization. Misdirection.
Yeah, The misdirection is something that I wondered because Rex does have some mobility.
Um, you figure that Clemson's gonna key in early to stop Shawn Tucker, right? Stop the run.
I don't think they're gonna be worried about Syracuse on the outside, but we know a defense like that that's aggressive.
Those guys are gonna be looking for turnover.
And I think the one thing Syracuse's might be able to to do is use that aggressiveness against them.
You know, they'll probably play man on the outside.
I don't think they fear anybody that Syracuse has as a threat, you know, to try and stacked the box.
So will Gilbert roll Call Papa Rao? Will we see some jets sweep action when we see something? What do you think Syracuse is just gonna play pretty conservative and try toe run the offense, you know, quote unquote and just get out of town with whatever happens and that that's the point that I'm looking to dive in a little bit deeper in the next coming weeks.
is that would take a when you take a look at the personnel that's on the field.
Syracuse seems In the past couple of weeks, Syracuse seemed very unwilling to run the ball with anyone not named Sean Tucker.
If Tucker is not on the field on and there's a Cooper lots in there Mark NCP era Trevor Penna, Syracuse was just not going to give them the ball because those guys have gotten maybe maximum 2 to 3 carries total over the last 2 to 3 games.
And if Tucker is not in the backfield, it's almost always a past player.
How Maney drives this year have we seen in the past three games, where it's just been nothing but past place? And it's because either Tucker hasn't been in for that drive and another guy is another guy is in that running back.
I think that's something that I think needs to be looked at A little bit as well is that it's Syracuse willing to give someone, um, in the backfield a chance to run that ball as well.
Yeah, I know one thing I wouldn't mind seeing along those lines is something like a to back set instead of, you know, we've been running a lot of too tight end with one of the tight ends playing a fullback or, um, you know, technically, it's three wide with a full back in the tight end, But it czar, tight end personnel on the field.
Um, if we took that too, you know, three wide with a tight end in a front area or even a to back set, Um, run someone like a paint or are with Tucker, who Tucker over the last couple of weeks has has looked much better pass blocking.
He's starting to pick up where he has toe, you know, starting slide From what his responsibilities are, UH, it would add add another dimension to the offense where, like you said, you don't just key in on Tucker getting the ball when he's in there on, but also puts pain in a situation where yes, he may run, but especially like an r p o with him leaking out of the backfield on some sort of quick dump.
Uh, that would really add another dimension to the offense.
When you get playmakers like that in open space, I think he could fill that role that we've wanted George Jordan to for a long time, so sticking with the officer, you're thinking of the offense.
A lot of fans want to see the freshman quarterbacks.
Eso Andy brought this up.
But Steve, what can Rex Culpepper do to kind of keep? I don't want to say probably the full game, because obviously, if it gets to be 30 40 points in the second half, I think at that point all bets are off.
It's probably good to get some game experience, but what can Culpepper do in the first half? Do you think to kind of I don't want to say claim the job for the rest of the year? But really hold off these young guys and give Syracuse of Hope, moving into some, uh, games against Mawr comparable competitions, Right? Well, I guess going back, combining that with where you tried to take us last time, Um, setting the tone for what we're going to see against Clemson, and I literally I think I literally started it with We're not going to come out and punched Clemson in the mouth because that's not the tone we need to set.
But if Culpepper can come out, and I guess just field general the offense if he can, you know, be that leader out there and, you know, make smart plays.
Know what his skill set is.
But if between him and Gilbert we can craft on offense around his strengths and, you know, get the ball into the athletes hands, use him.
Um, you know, not to make the throat a Taj on the sideline.
That, uh against what was that against Duke, where Cutcliffe said that was literally one of the best passes he's ever seen thrown.
We're not going to see that from Rex, But if weaken, you know, use his strength to get in a position where we can set up Tucker where we can set up some of these other offensive place that we're talking about, use him as a field general and set the tone for what we want moving forward.
We're not gonna look great against Clemson.
If we do, I'm happy as all get out.
But to set the expectations where they likely should be set, I would say, you know, we need to just consistently you see some consistency out of Rex and see him running the offense and confidently running the office.
E think a lot of that also is going to be.
How many of those drives do we see? Are the Syracuse drives that we've come to expect from a Dino Babers offense over the first couple of years? How many of those drives are going to be the quick drives that are okay? 22nd play oclock and snapped the ball? How many of those are cold pepper? Getting the ball out quickly, which he's showing? He's very good at doing.
He's very good at not only going through his reads quickly, which we have commented on on how he's very good about doing that.
He's also very good about making a decision quickly and just getting the ball out quickly as well, which is something that are.
No fans have been complaining about about the veto for a long time, but I think that, coupled with the type of offense that Syracuse should be running under our Dino Babers offense.
But that isn't decimated by injuries.
And death is going to be something that I think could help Culpepper as well because he's used to running that offense.
He's been here for five years, so he knows how to run the fast offense that is expected of the vapors type offense.
And we've only seen those type of drives a smattering of times.
I think of the Duke drive and the Duke drive that ended in defeat.
Getting injured thereafter will be multiple place where the veto completed quick sideline passes, which I know you're not expect Culpepper to do all the time.
But there were multiple those quick sideline passes that kept circuses Temple up.
And if you take a look at that first touchdown drive against Liberty, it was just a little bit.
Ah, lot of Sean Tucker counting about the middle.
But it was a lot of cold pepper, making quick decisions and finding receivers open quickly.
So how quickly can he developed tempo that Syracuse wants to eventually get up to run? I think could help him stay on the field a little bit longer. Their season as well.
When Clemson has the ball, they have no such concerns about their quarterback.
You wrote about Trevor Lawrence, and what sort of threat he poses to the Syracuse defense is Dubow going.
Thio pushed Trevor's Heisman campaign or Travis et en today.
I I honestly want to say Trevor's, uh, husband campaign, because even even E t. M.
By his standards hasn't put up the best numbers.
Um, in the past couple of weeks, and I say that by his standards, his standards are completely different.
Thio every other running backs standards in the a c c e o mere mortals who aren't in the conversation for a potential top five draft pick, which somehow started earlier this month.
Um, I don't think that's gonna happen, but that's a discussion for another time.
Um, even with that, I think the double is still going to play to his strengths.
And even with Syracuse's defense looking shot your last year, it was still Trevor Lawrence who beat Syracuse, and I kind of brought me up to my point.
Um, that I made on Friday, is that Yeah, we haven't seen quarterbacks take advantage of a potential hole in Syracuse's defense that was exposed by Kenneth Pickett, Um, in the pic game, and that was that.
Syracuse zone coverage look especially weak in place at the middle.
We know how good their cornerbacks are him.
If if a team Belafonte was is they're one of the best shutdown corners in the A, C. C.
And Garret Williams has performed very, very well for a fresh redshirt freshman, I believe he has, um, so those two guys, we know what we're going to get out of them.
It's Trevor Lawrence is going Thio have the same level, if not the better level of preparation that pick it had against Syracuse.
And I think Lawrence is going to notice that in In those in those games were pick, it decimated Syracuse through the air.
It was so in coverage that absolutely destroyed Syracuse and especially from their linebackers.
We've seen the linebackers drop back in coverage a lot this year, and that's the nature of the 33 problem.
Linebackers have to be extremely versatile, and they're often patrolling the middle of the field from five from anywhere from 5 to 10 yards where the three safeties are are patrolling the's own over the middle of the field or ah, lot deeper.
And even when Syracuse had on Francisco Andrew Williams, healthy against Pitt pick, it's still found a ton of holes just by throwing the ball over the line backers heads and placing a receiver right in the middle of the linebackers and safeties.
But if you don't think that Trevor Lawrence is going to find those exact same holes, that's a foolish assumption to make.
And I know the A C C quarterbacks are not the best like the only I mentioned in my piece is, well, the only other good quarterback that Syracuse is going to face this year's E M book and maybe BC's quarterback also.
But that's yet to be desired as well.
Um, but not every quarterback is going to be able to replicate Trevor Lawrence his performance.
But if he exposes those same types of falls over and over, that could add just another problem.
The defense that Tony White has to figure out is how do you stop Boston over in the middle when you have to employ his own conference that he so often does in the 335? So, Steve, what about the opportunity for these guys? There's gonna be a lot of NFL eyes watching this game and watching the Clemson offense, especially so for guys like iffy and trill.
What about the chance that presents to them for them today.
Yeah, and it was confirmed.
The trill trill did travel this week.
I know he was kind of carrying and not going into last week.
So it's It's good to see that Stephen Bayley, 247 ended up confirming that a minute ago that he is on the roster.
E mean, it's a great opportunity for them.
I mean, they're matching up against probably the best receivers.
They're going to see a tip to tail.
You know, there's some some talent or some groups that are more talented individually, but, you know, it's Clinton tip to tail.
They're gonna be four or five star guys, mostly five star and just a quality core against probably the best quarterback in college football if they can.
If, if you can still man up in lock down his guy, that worries me that we may not see him for all four years.
Same thing with trail.
You know, the more he gets exposure in these situations where he's going toe be against very talented players, Um, and especially this year, currently where he has very green guys around him, Um, it's not like, you know, the old, the old concept.
Like like we saw earlier this year where people were trying to target Gary Williams because if he was on the other side, um uh, you don't have the Cisco around him.
You don't have Kohli, who was a very solid player, pre injury.
Um, you know, Ciscos, the All American and gets all the praise.
But Eric Holy was another veteran player that also added to that transferred at the back.
That was a very formidable defense.
Um, right now trails the only one left.
And if he can still impress, that's going to be another feather in his cap for NFL scouts.
So it'll be it'll be a test.
But if they can come out on top of it, you know, even individual performance wise, it'll it'll look good on their resume.
All right, So do we see more than 25 star quarterbacks play for Clemson today? Or do we get the punter get more snaps? I'd say they go, punter.
Yeah, their their freshman explosively healthy D. J.
And I'm not gonna pronounce his last name.
The kid from California who is actually bigger than Trevor Long Lord five eso.
So when Trevor Lawrence leaves and goes to the, uh, Jets or Falcon protections, whoever whoever ends up with the number one next year and takes Trevor, um, it doesn't end up with a bigger quarterback coming from California.
And I think he's a lefty, too.
So, um, well, we love the left corner. Yes.
And speaking of awkward Segways and California, our current spots or don't feel the peril is launching u C Irvine, the Anteaters, today, five drop.
So I actually, I was planning on buying a North Dakota state shirt, because why not on by wife just picked up a vita the goat.
But home field apparel eyes one of our sponsors.
You can go to their site and use the code Nunes, which I believe is somewhere over here if you don't know how to spell it, um, for 10% off on on your order.
Um, Kevin and I are both rocking our current current Syracuse shirts, so always appreciate them as a sponsor.
Extremely comfortable shirts.
Christians in his game day professional.
Where on and yeah, I think I'm gonna grab in an undershirt, depending on what we see.
I think they dropped at noon for these new designs.
So if their biggest is a bunch of schools coming out today, so be interesting to see what we get get from them.
Just as a reminder. Syracuse.
Every time they released the top 10 Syracuse is ahead of UConn.
That has not changed so very much.
So really thrilled with that.
Alright, Eso Which quarterback today has a better hair? David Hale threw that out.
This could be the best quarterback versus quarterback flow matchup in college football this year.
Yeah, I definitely I'm dubbing this.
The flow down So e, I think I think Lawrence has still got it.
Rex has The Rex is impressive when you think of, you know, he was what two years ago was going through chemo and was bald as a cue ball.
And now he's got the flowing locks like I think he gets additional points for that.
I think Trevor Lawrence is going to get him on the endor*****t.
So that's it? That's the Mahomes.
Better watch out because the head and shoulders deal, You know that that's gonna be running out once Trevor hits the lead.
Yeah, that brings That brings up the question.
What is the better areas and Trevor Lawrence or Century Polamalu? Oh, I think you still have to go, Palomo.
Uh, I don't know that Trevor can touch that.
That will definitely go down as the all time the goat in the NFL here game? Yeah, that's a lead level you could already envision how just electric commercial is going to become Super Bowl Sunday with all of them just with often, even if my homes is playing in the game like no.
You got to feel like you gotta get Lawrence to the NFC so that he could be against the homes, right? Gotta have all hair on the field at all times something either that they got to convince to it to grow his out over the next year.
Or maybe Or maybe because Rex has played tight end someone signs Mr Taysom Hill type of player in and all of a sudden, more hair.
Oh, yeah, that's that.
That's that was the Eric Dungey role.
I think he missed out on e don't know the injuries or whatnot, but but find someone who loves you like Sean Payton loves Taysom Hill, right? Oh, God, yeah, that Z great situation before we go into predictions.
Random theoretical question.
If Breeze goes down injured at all this season, who comes in first put quarterbacks? Does it taste the mail? Is that James Winston? I e.
I think Jamous starts, but you see a lot more of the taste of Hill gadget plays.
I just don't I never understood why they do.
Take Drew Brees out of the game on third downs like, I don't mind that stuff when it's like, first and goal and you want to do something different.
Especially we can that option with camera.
You know, if you got Murray and camera in the backfield with Hill to give a different look, but when it's like 35 they split Drew Brees out wide like if you're in opposing defense in the NFL, you have to be loving that.
I mean, all the knocks on Breeze and his arm strength or whatnot.
But anyway, that's a That's a long winded rant, and we digress.
Do you know how much how much we don't want to talk about Syracuse versus Clemson? And how much of a dropping This is coming to be Yeah.
Yeah, Well, we did get another.
Another news from Stephen that Stephen Bayley, That s you traveled 69 players this week. Nice.
Which is 10 more than the dress last week. So that's a plus.
The only downfall of that is 31 of them are freshmen, including 21 true freshman.
Oh, so 45% of the squad that traveled is freshman, Is that that's not a good is that eyes that almost, if not the entire recruiting class, then once the last time that over 90% once the last time that over 90% over recruiting class dressed for any team, not alone. Just Syracuse.
Just any team for a very E can't.
You definitely wouldn't bring everybody e 21 out of probably 25.
Even if you have five.
Even if you have five star guys going to Clemson, Alabama, Florida, Ohio State, Michigan, you're assuming that large majority of those freshmen are still going to red shirt.
So that that should that should help put into perspective how depleted Syracuse is.
Yeah, those three guys that didn't travel are probably hurt.
God Yeah, right already? Yeah.
Because perspective is overrated among some of the fan base.
So All right, we've been delaying this long enough for two minutes to kick off predictions for today.
Uh, you can guess which orange team wins? Yeah, 63 14.
So about the same.
Yeah, I think I gave Syracuse 13 points.
I think I don't think Clinton scores over 70.
I think double tries to get some of his guys out early.
I don't think we'll see et and carry the bulletin today.
Um, keeping fresh.
But that would be a good That'll be a good profit over under 10.
5 carries for 80 end today.
I would say under, if you're asking me but entertainment purposes only.
Is it? So, what's the plus or minus three yards per carry? I want to set it at, like, 22 on.
I might take the over, Uh, usually 1/50 for sure.
So how quickly How quickly do we get into the game? Where in 30 yard rush by ET on lowers is average yards per carry.
Oh, probably last week. Yeah.
Well, hey, just enjoy what we can write exactly.
If nothing else, Syracuse is on the field and we didn't even expect that this year.
So I'll take any any possible game we could get.
On the plus side, Miles Morales signed the new Spider Man game.
Now has a Jason Todd looking red hood skin.
So they're Ugo only positive to come from my Twitter timeline this week.
Well, Azaz always Thanks for joining us.
And for Christian and Kevin, I'm Steve and go orange hopefully.
