Welcome back, Thio.
Monday morning I D p uh, My name is Justin Barnes.
You can follow me at Twitter at down with I D. P.
Hanging out here getting defensive expert Gary Van ****.
You follow on Twitter at the I d P. Tipster.
Uh, great great guy, this and we.
So we ran this for a few minutes earlier.
Uh, but, you know, in the world of zoom meetings and Internet active spread across crap crash people.
Yes, sir, but we'll listen.
We're back up and run.
That were back up and running.
Now we had we had a great time talking toe Johnny the Greek here just a few minutes ago.
We've been talking about snap counts and how snap counts and game script can vary wildly from one game to the next.
And it's not an easy thing to track.
And so you can look at your i. D.
P scores every week and wonder why.
Ah, guy who normally gets eight or 10 tackles got four tackles, you know, or you'll Ah, player who normally gets 3 to 4 tackles.
They have 12 tackles one week and then you and then you think wait, Do I need to run out and go get this guy? Is this what he's gonna do every week? That's harder to figure out on the defensive side of the ball than it is on the offensive side of the ball, because they just don't talk about that sort of stuff on online or so on the broadcast as much.
But that's why you know, Gary is a great follow.
He's got, you know, he does a lot of great.
He does a lot of great stuff on Twitter, where he down.
So does John of the Greek.
What I was saying earlier on on the beginning of this is one of things I really like about the I.
P communities that were is that we band together to help you guys because you guys don't get the information you need to make these decisions, and we're here to help you.
So I brought up Darius Leonard as somebody who has been playing every snap till he got hurt, was putting up a really good tackle rate or tackle percentage.
That means he's tackling, Uh, you know, he about a 15% tackle rate, which means if he plays 1000 snaps.
This year, he's gonna have 130 140 150 tackles.
He's just not been playing enough snaps because his defense hasn't been on the field as much.
And that's no reflection on him.
He's still playing in a at an elite level.
Uh, Johnny brought up Devon White, who started the season.
But the last couple of games has just been bad game script for him.
The Bears barely ran the ball, so, you know, both he and Lavonte David just didn't get his many tackle opportunities is normal.
And listen, that happens to the best of it.
Happened, happened toe loop quickly.
It's happened to every great I d p that that we've ever covered.
So I took various Leonard and Johnny took Devon White to point out some things.
But I'm really interested to get some of your takes on the scary about AP counts, you know, usage Gilliam script.
I'm sure you've got a lot of thoughts on this.
Originally, folks, you know, uh, no, me that I have crap net, you know? And I really appreciate Justin being on good ****.
You guys gotta follow him if you're gonna listen to me.
Uh, I just recently met him in this last year, and he knows this ****.
Okay, so and disclaimer for anybody just tuning tuning in, I dio smoke and us a little bit.
So I just wanna warn everybody for that disclaimer that nowadays but anyways, just roll on, get past that.
Um, I'm glad to have Justin on his grace resource along with all the other guys.
We had another game plan to start this out with this weekend, but it we have four or five guys 56 guys and everything just went left.
So it's me and Justin.
Anybody decides to join in in this.
In this meantime, that that's great.
Originally, my player that I was going to talk about was Cory Little known.
And if I seem excited is because I've been up all **** night.
My cat had had babies or whatever kittens last night, and it just was like, you know, I don't even really care for cats, but I guess guess who was on cat patrol.
So anyway, it's just been one of those things this morning have been one thing after another, So if I seem over hyper.
That's why, um when it comes to Cory Little and everybody had already kind of been on this hype train about Cory when he was ah, former Ram.
You know, look, his whole situation.
I don't want to spend too much time talking about it, because now our our game plan here might have changed a little bit.
And there's some things that I think that me and just talk about it could really help people.
And I'm gonna try toe tryto coach that part along.
So, um, when it comes down to it, uh, Corey little in really had these deck stacked against him a little bit when he went to the Raiders.
Um, I had mentioned off in the off season that he would probably end up being the weak side linebacker because, you know, assumes they had Kowalski, which I'm gonna hack that name up soon. They had him.
He kind of fit into the mode of the middle linebacker before Corrie Littleton.
Well, what happens the first game of the season, Waske or whatever gets hurt, and, you know, they did not move at that time.
They did not move Corey Littleton.
So he said that the weak side linebacker position that position alone is a step down, usually in tackle.
Uh uh, opportunities.
Okay, The middle linebacker is sitting there.
He's the guy is going to stop the run up the middle nine times out of 10 but I can't say that, but ah, lot Mawr the majority of the time.
The weak side linebacker is in charge of coverage like the tight inside and such, you know, and he's just it's just two different positions from what he played as the Onley full time linebacker in the middle of the Rams defense for the last couple of years, which funneled everything to him, he was in charge of stopping the run.
He was in charge of covering all the running backs, coming out the back, tight ends and such.
So his role changed and I was guilty.
I did drop him down on my on on my rankings before the season a little bit so but there was a lot of people that I've seen and it's, you know, it is what it is.
Rankings are nothing but an opinion before the preseason or before the season, and we could really see that this year.
But when it really boiled down to was just he's not getting and And the Oakland offense has been so much better hitting on the topic of what Justin brought up, you know? I mean, you've got to give Gruden kudos for the fact that he kind of turned out that whole offense around, you know? So it's the same things.
Less snaps versus the offense, defense and stuff.
And things were different for Corey Littleton, Um, thinking about that.
I wanted to touch off on this and since it's just being you right now, Justin, um, when I did my rankings and again rankings or nothing but opinion to me, you know, there are very few guys and I even say, and I do this method, I do that method.
I look at different types of situations.
We have different types of scoring formats.
I try to find a balance between a redraft and a dynasty, which you know it's an opinion, it really is.
But when it really boiled down to it this morning, which I was in the process of looking at, I was trying to pull up the information that I had this morning.
I have an M f l the that I have what I consider a balanced tackle format.
And what I mean by Balanced is, is that it's more offense to defense instead of, say, linebacker to defensive lineman.
But I was still looking at this because to me, it Zamora based on solo tackles instead of those flashy plays.
And me and Jeff were just hitting on this when we were reviewing our ratings for this year.
Community are the I d p players.
There's a whole over the last five years are below par, considering what they have been.
And it's exactly what Justin is talking about.
Uh, the Koven has set it off toe.
Where the offense has an advantage.
There are are are also there is not any fans in the stands.
There's not any confusion on.
I feel like I'm cutting up here.
No, you're good. You're good.
My picture frozen.
A little little gunshot.
So we have the Koven situation.
We have coaches that air using the first three games of the season like a preseason.
You know, I hear everybody *****ing about Ingram and Dub, Dobyns and now in Grams.
Getting all the carries were Edwards and Our Gus Edwards and and look People that first three weeks Waas.
Nothing but a new early preseason that they counted course.
They tried toe win, but they still are experimenting.
Okay, so when it comes in, I hate talking dirty.
Oh, but it's kind of cracking me up at the moment.
I am a hyo state fan.
Big dude, you know, love them.
But, you know, it's the same kind of scenario.
Do you sit a veteran? It's proven and did it for you for the last year, too, and in all cases.
And then I think Ingram's at the end of his contract to begin with.
So Dobbins save him, you know, let him learn.
But either way, so this whole situation is you got to Kobe, you got early preseason and you've got the all offense taking advantage of the defense.
They don't have the distractions.
Half of that sound that you hear while you're watching The game is piped in, you know, and if it is piped in in the stadium, it's not piped in like it.
If you're sitting in Seattle and you got the 12th man and they're screaming so loud.
It's like last night that game was so exciting, you know, and it came down to it.
But those guys were able to concentrate there.
There's there's just that much more.
And that is leading to the fact that there's less opportunities for these defensive players to make the place, not to mention.
And I don't mean to keep rattling on Justin, Not to mention for the fact that that we have had a really off year we have had, you know, usually it takes the first two or three years to or to three games to really balance out.
But, I mean, you've got guys like Joey Bo Jo.
Uh, Nick Boats have gone down.
You guys got you got Cameron Jordan.
He hasn't producing.
Uh, Chancellor Jones is just fell off the map.
The defensive veterans that what? For whatever reason, they're not put being put in the same position they were last year.
Well, they are on the field, but the roles are a little bit different.
It's it's it's or people are concentrating on them.
Even Aaron Donald has struggled up to this point.
I think it's out of out of three games are out of five games this year.
He's had to that. He's just really busted.
You know, it's just unusual for this momentum, opportunities, and all of this has just really got everything going on.
And when it comes into Leonard, um, me and John had talked about it for a long time.
I mean, it was really against the odds that he could continue to produce the way he waas.
It just makes common sense.
The defense gets better around him.
This just happens to be a year with the Koven in the whole situation, with the offensive getting offensive side of the ball, getting more opportunities to make plays, that that he's down.
You know, now he's hurt, but now he was down before he was hurt.
You know, the odds were completely against him to begin with, to come out with 160 tackles again or have that average a week for that amount.
It's just, you know, things change, opportunities change.
Um, the When he was talking about Devon White, I actually thought that Devin White would like lead David and I tried to cut in there for a minute.
I was David having a good year.
But sometimes the fantasy gods don't make sense, and sometimes things just happen.
Devin White is still a hell of a player.
It doesn't mean that it's, you know, his his idea production or anything like that has really been hampered, other than the whole fact of the offense and the defense, because David still producing at a decent level.
But my God, you know, David's been an all Pro player for 12 years.
The situation changed from last year to this year.
Maybe teams aren't focusing on that part of the field.
Last year they were challenging white.
Now, this year, they're like, Whoa, maybe we shouldn't challenge White.
So all of a sudden they're just going to other parts of the field and you got David.
It just happens to be in the right place at the right time.
What do you think, Justin? I I don't know.
I've rattled on.
I've had no buildup is you can't tell by this morning, right? Yeah, for sure.
No, you're making great points.
Particularly about, you know, it's been a nod season to start for lots of reasons for Cove it and, you know, no training camp.
And it changes, um, rookie roles, for sure.
On the defense that we've seen with Isaiah Simmons, I think Isaiah Simmons is gonna be a player.
We're all gonna be trying to get in our leagues in a in a couple of years.
But he's playing like, you know, six or eight snaps a game right now.
And you know, there's lots of reasons for that.
But, you know, training, no training camp, All that's having a huge effect on things.
Also, you're right, like right from the top of our d L leaderboard.
I mean, you know, when we ranked players heading into the season, there's a there's about six or a defensive lineman where we're like All right, these guys, we're gonna be up here.
Well, who's on that list? Deal? Hunter.
Well, he's out, Nick.
Well, he's got He's dealing with the triceps injury and a knee injury, and he's not playing as well.
Well, he camera Jordan's face some of the toughest offensive lines for he keeps, you know.
Now, luckily, he finally got through with the sack last week against Green Bay.
But that was the first sack that Green Bay is allowed to a defensive lineman.
So he's off to a slow start.
This is one of my big things this week to try and really dive in here.
I am fascinated by the slow start of Chandler drones, which is I'm sure it's gonna be another topic for another day.
But, you know, I e I guess he's out for the season.
Oh, yeah, that's right. You know you're right.
Yeah, Yeah, yeah, yeah, I forgot.
Torn biceps. That's right.
So So? So there's another guy, right? So there's all these defensive lineman who have started, you know, slowly or the knocked out.
So it immediately throws whenever preseason rankings.
You know that that Gary or I or Johnny and I would put together Now that board is gonna look totally different.
The rest of you, which, by the way, always happens.
This happened on the offensive side, right? I mean, you ranked CMC and say Kwan and Elliott and, you know, and all that just goes out the window.
So, uh, we almost lost cooked last night.
That's the first thing I thought I was like, Well, I haven't heard that this morning.
No, I'm ready to just curl up in a blanket and wake up in 2021 try again.
But you mentioned something.
You know l d and Devin White and all that.
And this goes back to what we were discussing about.
You know, Where is the production coming from? And how does that? How is that changed by snap counts and game scripts? One of the things that you know, Uh, in the first half of the broadcast I mentioned, you know, football is a time sport, which means that we have a pretty good understanding of how Maney tackles a team is going to rack up at each week.
Based on snaps, etcetera, etcetera.
So one of the things you can look for is throughout a game.
How where are the tackles going to? Because if a team runs the ball a lot, well, then your defensive backs your your safeties aren't, you know aren't likely get as many tackles.
It's gonna come to the defensive line.
If a team throws a lot.
You're going to see a lot more cornerback and safety production than you're gonna see coming off of your you know, your your linebackers and stuff.
So it's important.
Toe Watch those numbers carefully now.
Granted, that's not your job.
Your job is to listen to us.
It's our job to do that homework for you, right? We're not asking you toe Thio.
Pour through your tackle statistics.
But, you know, be man, why did he have a bad game? We're going to try and help, you know, help you figure that out.
And that's one of things I really like what Johnny said about about the game script for for Levante.
David and Devon White.
So one thing you can look at that's a little easier to see is if.
If you've got two good linebackers, let's say like a Devon White or Lavonte David, you start paying attention, Thio.
Two things, really.
One do that is one of those players consistently out producing the other right, and that that goes to your point.
Gary, about Nik Witkowski and Corey Littleton.
You know, again and again that middle linebacker should be putting up more tackles than Littleton playing the will.
So you start to figure out this guy if a team it flying backers get 20 tackles a game opportunity.
Well, then this guy is gonna get 10 and this guy six or seven and then we Sprinkle a few more out for other linebackers who might show up.
Or is it a situation where every week, you know, they're gonna kind of almost flip flop? One week it's an L.
D game the next week.
It's a Devon White game.
And if you see that, you just have to understand.
There's an expectation that says sometimes L.
D is going to get there before Devon one and maybe the next game.
It doesn't mean that you should drop Devon White because L d outplayed him, or the flow of the run game happened.
Toe aim toward L.
More than Devon White in a particular game. It happens.
Yeah, and one day we haven't mentioned his skull, Bert.
I mean, scope was in a totally different situation.
Is that middle linebacker? And with the brown they used that position differently.
Within that scheme might be the same scheme 43 scheme, but you don't understand everybody every d C or most DCs have a different take on how that works.
So, you know, it's like I was really high on Myles.
I, uh, did a take on him earlier in the year like February March that he was going to be set up for, ah, bounce back year.
And I actually said in there, I'm hoping or don't worry if they sign a good middle linebacker and put him back on on the weak side, and it was a real basis for that.
It was real simple.
I did not go in depth, and we've seen it last night.
We've seen it yesterday.
Dakota Allen, who Allen is a longtime journeymen, put in the right position at the right time on the right freaking defense, you know, and school Burt didn't do well.
Of course it Same time, neither That they're strong safety Jones, which has been tearing it up.
But either way wasn't a strong matchup.
When you look at it on paper, it wasn't strong matchup for that central area.
I probably for the fact that Texas we're just gonna sing them all.
You know, I I don't I don't know what that script is What went wrong yesterday.
But the one thing that came through was Alan was that linebacker.
I think they even had a strong side linebacker.
Maybe that producer, another linebacker, maybe.
I'm just gonna quit myself.
But my main focus is on that position of the weak side. Linebacker.
So what? All you people out there are all you gurus out there, which I use that word lightly.
I'm sorry, Justin, If you hadn't caught this before, I don't consider us do ruse.
A guru to me is like, you know that that's that's so up there to me were advisers because we have our faults.
We can't get it right every time.
For the simple fact is there is one thing that I d p owners got to remember.
Just like offensive side of the ball.
The fantasy football gods decide who does what? Yeah, we can only try Thio, make judgment and go into it.
So everybody had ah, lot of people had Skull Bert just being this lit up.
Dude, I even had him in my top five rankings before the season.
But his whole entire situation has changed.
You know, like Martinez.
He went from a situation in Green Bay where he was the only full time inside linebacker in a 34 defensive scheme that just utilized him. It didn't matter.
What kind of great? Because he actually doesn't grade well and like coverage and stuff.
But he went into the exact same system.
Exact same scenario with the giant.
So who do we have? Who out of all these people? We have Wagner.
We have Martinez.
We have some of the older veterans here that's been doing it for a few years.
Help me out, Justin.
If you think of it because I'm afraid to touch my Internet well, you got way mentioned.
L d like Lavonte.
David's off to a strong start.
You know, I love what you top 10 15 last year.
Yeah, but you make a great point about about Myles. Jack.
And I know you feel this way about the wheel position for for the chargers as well.
You have some of these defensive coordinators and and the defense is set up to flow to where there are a few players who are freer to run around and be more aggressive and make more place.
Well, right, exactly.
So on some teams, the middle linebacker is that guy.
He's gonna be there, you know, like Bobby Wagner is for the for the Seahawks.
But on other teams, the middle linebacker role coordinator and he doesn't really get us many opportunities.
So Myles Jack, Monster player at the will.
They moved him to the mic, and when they moved him to them when they moved to that middle linebacker, spot his his stuff tank.
And then everyone said, Oh, man, Myles Jack is toast.
He's terrible is, you know, whatever.
It was a fluke, right? But that's not the case that it's a role situation.
So he moved back to the will, and he started tearing it up, you know? And I know one guy you were saying about school. Bernau.
Yeah, that time, what was you, You know, I mean, it's not that we knew this right, But why? It's happening? We can see it now.
You know it's not school, but it's not the same guy.
He didn't lose the step.
It's just his role.
No, no, you're good.
Uh, e think a good parallel is a running back If you there are teams where you say, Look, if you stick a running back into that system, they're gonna go off, right? Well, the same thing happens for linebackers can also happen for safety is it depends on where they land and how that defensive coordinator plans on using them.
And the same thing like you could If you took a great running back and sent him to New England, we'd all cry because we brother is gonna be six running backs and right, so straight back defensive, absolutely.
Like, you know, I'd love to get your take on on, You know, on all there are more and more teams who are rotating four and sometimes five linebackers, right? So, Detroit, you know, trying to find a double digit tackle linebacker in Detroit is impossible.
You know, New England is happening.
We have watching Jerome Baker and with Miami, he blew up the first week and everybody dropped there.
You know, Bobby Wagner shares to pick up Jerome Baker, and then he had, like, four tackles the next week.
So finding those consistent linebackers, those consistent strong safeties, those consistent defensive lineman.
It's harder than ever because I think as defense has become more multiple, they rotate more players.
Fewer, fewer I'd GPS or playing 1000 snaps.
So get some of these guys and just say, Look, this guy is gonna have a four tackle week from time to time.
I have to live with that, you know? Ah, guy, you were on or a position you were on early on was, uh, the will spot for the Chargers.
Like I was just saying, you know, like we were, you know? Yeah, I know.
And then he went down.
But then look Hey, look what I know, man.
That was That was That was a great call.
And he was And he was He was prying, But look at Kaze or White White stepped into that Will Rolande and look at him go.
Yeah, and And white was a like a fan favorite for a couple of years now, but he kept getting pushed off to the side, pushed off to the side, and now all of a sudden, you can't depend on pyramid because pyramid gets hurt every year.
I'm surprised they haven't just walked on.
Everybody was excited about Nick Vigil going over there.
Hey, you know there are such things.
There is a huge difference between real life play grades and fantasy football production grades.
You know, absolutely.
Ah, guy can suck and just turn around and just produce and produce for I. D.
P. And people need to remember.
There is a flux between it because of the different schemes, different opportunities of where you're at and T b all honest about.
This whole situation is there are still players like Gurry for For Philadelphia, producing is constant.
He's being staying healthy.
He's on the he's on the field.
The dude's got the poorest Pff grade I've ever seen.
He got, like, a 36 or something on the year.
That's poor people.
But it doesn't matter what that is.
What's happening in real life at that aspect that he is still producing for I deep so that matters.
Preston Brown is a perfect example.
I keep going up for years.
He was the poorest greater guy, produced 150 tackles a year for like, two or three years or something or up in that top five or 10.
And as soon as he was released and they got Edmonds remind you that is a red flag, why in the world would you release the dude? Okay, well, there has to be a reason.
He's not actually the guy they want.
He's not actually that good.
He went to Cincinnati.
I started warning people.
Hey, just you know, he was being He was being drafted and redrafted, and stuff is top 10.
Linebacker are still I'm like you guys better pump the brakes because he stinks.
And he's probably at home right now watching this.
I'm sorry, Mr Brown, but either way, you know he's not even on a team right now, but those there's a fine line.
And that's what you got.
Justin and me, Johnny the Greek you've got Chris.
Robin, you got which I was kind of excited.
I guess Chris is gonna be drawing the G R guys in some, uh, aspect.
Uh, I'd like to just say he's part of the family, but right now, I'm just gonna say he looks like he's gonna be contributing to the team until we see what happens.
But either way, that's a long story I thought he'd beyond today, but unfortunately, he had an appointment that he couldn't get out of.
We went earlier with John Ronnie, my, my my cohort at grid irons.
He decided to go to the boathouse, and he doesn't get good Internet there.
So I hope that you all really got something out of this with me and Justin today.
And I do not mean to cut this short, but I have something going on over here in the house that I need to go take care of.
Um hey, but this has been fun, man.
Yeah, and I think it's been informative if if it's been a tough year, it's tough.
Anyways, people doing this whole I d p thing.
You've had major players changing schemes.
You've had co vid You've had this whole, uh, on salat of the what? Our main topic, waas is how the offense has really dictated the play of the defense of the opportunities that they've had.
You know, there's a lot going on right now, and in my redress, I'm just playing the wire left and right to try to keep up and do the best I can.
And I've got a few members that are reaching out that are just starting to reach too much because they're freaked out about what's going on, you know, so just just it's one of those years we're gonna have to tough our way through this.
IVP can be kind of funny to begin with and just think, starting next year, whether or not this cove, it's over with whether or not they turn around and they do things a little bit differently and stuff.
I know they have some fans in the stands, in some stadiums to a portion, but there's nowhere near the distractions.
There's quarterbacks and his wide receivers.
They're able to go out there.
Everybody's off at the at the staff count.
They all have the jump and everything's is flowing so well for them this year.
Next year, I believe if I remember right just rushing back in the back of my head, there are going to be, ah, lot of free agent major players moving again.
More likely, either do the age changes in their scheme that got outs in their contracts.
There's a whole nother, so we're not done yet.
It's not going to get any easier, as far as I'm concerned next year.
Looking ahead, I suggest that we have our work cut out for us again.
And everybody's gonna probably be sitting here about week four or five. Again. Going.
What the hell? Yeah, well, hey, thanks so much for having me on gay.
We should We definitely need to do it again soon.
Okay? Yeah, you're, you know, Justin and a few of these guys, they have a permanent seat Monday mornings whenever they want to be here at the least, Uh, this is the first time my internet messed up in a while, But, you know, either way, I got crap in it, That's what That's what it's about.
But I'm gonna be here no later than 10 o'clock every Monday morning.
And if you guys just gotta look at me and face me and I just talk bs, they're, you know, watch me smoke cigarettes and drink coffee.
So I hope that we help somebody.
And just and I am excited that you've joined us and this your first time in your and hopefully you're just gonna be able t o.
You know, pop in your school, teacher.
That's what you said.
Yeah, well, I'm I'm a musician who also teaches, uh, at a music school, and we usually do a lot of stuff Monday morning.
So is that every Monday morning? So when I'm free, I'm absolutely gonna pop in, which is probably a couple times a month.
Hopefully, I'll go.
That's gonna be like a life dream toe have that kind of job.
If you're that person, right, It's like, Yeah, I bet I bet.
All right, well, I'm gonna let Justin carry us out of here.
Thank you for tuning in.
Hopefully next week.
We have a little bit more guys on.
Maybe we run off my internet.
Who knows? But either way, I really hope that you found all this informational.
And I also I hope you understand that it's not just us.
It's not just us.
Go look at some other people.
Go look at their waiver wires.
Go look at what they had set up.
There is no consistency across the board.
All right, so we're just trying to be here to help.
Yeah, Thanks a lot.
Thanks, everybody for tuning into Monday.
Make sure I'm sure you guys are already following uh, Gary on Twitter.
The I d p tipster.
He's a grad. And follow.
Thanks for Johnny for coming on earlier.
I know he was on a tight time schedule.
Hopefully, we could get Chris and Ronnie on here as well.
We'll see you guys next week.
