mhm.
00:00:09
Okay.
00:00:11
Mhm.
00:00:12
Yeah.
00:00:16
Ah, yes. Friends on a Friday.
00:00:18
It is, of course, the one giant podcast where, as always, I'm Adam are back joined by the healthy, the wealthy, the wise Mr Andrew Markowitz.
00:00:26
Adam, you know, we have dedication to the O G p listeners when it's 75 sunny in the Northeast.
00:00:32
And here we are inside, recording a podcast on Friday.
00:00:35
Yeah, there's nothing to do with the fact that every single year I forget that I have allergies every single year without fail.
00:00:43
I spend a two week period where I'm like, I don't know where this migraine came from, but I cannot like this.
00:00:49
Just it can't get past it.
00:00:51
And then when someone says, Oh, I've been having allergies and I realized it in my own mind.
00:00:56
I don't immediately just, you know, fess up and go.
00:00:58
Oh, my God. Allergies. You're right.
00:01:00
I go.
00:01:01
Oh, that's interesting.
00:01:02
Is that a curiosity? Where do you keep your Allegra in the house? I just know I just did.
00:01:05
I like to just kind of run these things down for myself.
00:01:07
I'll be right back.
00:01:08
Some things unfolded during the week here.
00:01:10
We weren't able to get in on on a Wednesday.
00:01:12
That's via Copa on my end.
00:01:14
I had some things going on away from the podcast.
00:01:17
We highlighted the Kenny Golladay obviously got signed to that big deal, but because of the way his contract was structured $4.
00:01:23
5 million first year cap it.
00:01:25
That's a sweet little, you know, sweet little nugget there, and it actually balances out about 21 million every year thereafter.
00:01:32
So it doesn't blow things up.
00:01:33
It actually makes it a pretty balanced contract.
00:01:35
And you figure when the cap goes up again next year, it'll fall right in line with where it should be.
00:01:40
Tip of the cap, By the way, to Kevin Abrams, right? Doing the doing, the work supposed to be that financial assistant GM guru.
00:01:47
He is exactly that.
00:01:48
It's what afforded the Giants to go out and sign one of the better young cornerbacks on the market in Adoree Jackson before we get into the numbers on his deal.
00:01:57
Just initial reactions and this is probably not what we had when I when I threw out the idea, by the way of, well, the Leonard Williams situation, what you could or couldn't do.
00:02:06
Maybe you could have been in on the Shaquille Griffin, you know, sweepstakes and free agency.
00:02:11
It was kind of that, you know, you could have done it other places.
00:02:13
You could have spent money.
00:02:15
I didn't think that this was coming down the pike.
00:02:17
And as the Kenny Golladay contract was in the works, you started to hear about Adoree Jackson.
00:02:22
You started to hear about the players pitching him on joining Big Blue.
00:02:26
And then it just kind of came to fruition.
00:02:29
The first thing that I think about when I hear all this and you talking about, you know, the math on on Kenny Holidays deal and you talked about Kevin Abrams.
00:02:37
I'm thinking about Dave Gettleman with a pencil over his ear with, like, one of those big old calculators in front of him.
00:02:44
And he's like, How much is Kenny Worth like like like, can we fit into hold on? Is it 12.
00:02:50
6 or 13 million? I got to do the man, and he's trying to do the cap on one of those old school calculators.
00:02:57
While while Kevin was like, leave the math to me, I got it.
00:03:01
Do you want the guy or not? That's the first thing that came to my mind, right? Just tell me if you want him.
00:03:06
I'll figure it out. Thanks so much.
00:03:08
The second thing that I I thought about is man.
00:03:11
We have done a 1 80 on this off season.
00:03:14
You know, everything's quiet.
00:03:16
Leonard Williams doesn't get resigned.
00:03:18
You resigned right away.
00:03:19
Dalvin Tomlinson looks like he's out the door, and and Giant fans, myself included, are saying, What the heck is going on? Like, Are we just sitting this thing out? And then all of a sudden from the depths Bank, Kenny, Kenny Golladay hits the Giants, get a number one wide receiver.
00:03:33
Huge, Tremendous.
00:03:35
You look at all of his like tough catch radius and all those different status they have over the last five years.
00:03:39
Kenny Golladay is at the top of those lists.
00:03:41
He can go up and make plays, and then you look at a guy like Adoree Jackson.
00:03:45
They spend three years, $39 million.
00:03:47
13 million dollars a year for a second corner is a lot of money, but it's money well spent at him because he is 25 years old.
00:03:55
You know, he he had a bunch of knee issues or, you know, injury concerns last year.
00:04:00
Uh, you know, the Titans just didn't want to pay him, and they cut him.
00:04:03
It's very rare that a 25 year old cornerback who has graded out as high as Adoree Jackson has hits the open market.
00:04:11
Never mind wants to come play for the New York football giants.
00:04:14
So when we heard that he was taking the plane right up to New York, uh, I thought it was going to be around.
00:04:19
10 million ends up being 13.
00:04:20
I don't care like I said before, not my money.
00:04:23
And the Giants got significantly better in the last two weeks.
00:04:26
Oh, 100% right.
00:04:28
And like you say, we talked about this with Kenny Golladay, and we say sometimes it's lip service, right? Really liked what Dave Gettleman said.
00:04:34
Like what? Jason Garrett and what Joe Judge said about the offense and how they want to work it.
00:04:38
But you hear from Adoree Jackson again.
00:04:40
This is the the pitch train.
00:04:42
As Logan, Ryan had ties with him from the Tennessee Titans.
00:04:45
His his first interview for the Giants basically talked about.
00:04:48
Listen, this guy took me under his wing in Tennessee.
00:04:51
Taught me a lot both on and off the field.
00:04:53
So all of these things became very appealing.
00:04:55
A lot of these free agents, even Rudolph, who had footnote little sorry, didn't mean yeah, footnote that he had an issue with his foot. He's going to get.
00:05:05
So he should be fine to me for the season.
00:05:07
And there was a little speculation.
00:05:08
How would they definitely commit signing him? They, in fact did.
00:05:11
But all of this comes around to the Giants are an organization, a team under Joe Judge that it seems to be generating buzz around the league and around free.
00:05:19
It's desirable now.
00:05:21
The other side of that, you can say, is the giant still spend money to get these guys right.
00:05:25
Adora Jackson's contract maxes out with incentives at just around 44 a half million dollars.
00:05:30
Potentially inside of that as well.
00:05:32
A quick, quick side note is the Giants did restructure the contracts of Bradbury and Blake Martinez.
00:05:39
Uh, they converted eight million of Bradbury salary into a signing bonus, and that cleared $4 million in space as well.
00:05:45
So they made these little tweaks again.
00:05:47
Kevin Abrams will make the math work goes back to what Jordan Brennan had said.
00:05:51
What feels like weeks ago Now, right? If the Giants want to do do big contracts, they want to make moves in free agency.
00:05:56
They can, and that is bore itself out.
00:05:59
I was gonna say, You look at someone like the Rams, who are $48 million over the cap, and they find a way to bring Leonard Floyd back for $16 million a year, and we're wondering whether or not the Giants hovering around, you know, even can they even make a move? They go out and make huge moves.
00:06:15
And And the Adoree Jackson move is also important because one the Giants desperately needed a cornerback to across from Bradbury.
00:06:21
Knowing the types of receivers that are in the division.
00:06:24
You look in Dallas, you look at Washington now with Curtis Samuel McLaurin and now Adam Humphries.
00:06:30
They're starting to build these wide receiver.
00:06:31
Of course, we need cornerbacks.
00:06:33
The other piece of it is another in the division footnote is that George Jackson was set to leave for Philadelphia to go meet with them shortly after meeting with the Giants, well played by his agent, by the way, because the Giants could not afford literally to let him go visit with the Eagles and have him sign within the division.
00:06:53
No, 100% right again.
00:06:54
And you know Kenny Golladay a little bit different, right? There are some opportunities.
00:06:57
Maybe Chicago is gonna make a late push for him, but not a division rival.
00:07:01
If you're the Giants again, this is a win by getting Adoree Jackson and then another win by keeping the Philadelphia Eagles potentially weaker in that division, probably considered to be the worst team, although if you go by some betting sites, maybe the Giants are supposed to be the worst.
00:07:14
Get your money another now.
00:07:15
But you know, in the division, don't worry about it now.
00:07:17
The other little piece of Blake Martinez that was converted seven million of his salary, creating a $3.
00:07:23
5 million in space as well, so that that's how they cleared up some of those numbers.
00:07:28
Also, let's just talk briefly, specifically, football.
00:07:30
Obviously, we're going to the training camp down the road here and we'll start to see how this unfolds.
00:07:34
But both sides of the ball.
00:07:36
Kenny Golladay.
00:07:37
I think it's pretty obvious, right? It's the exact weapon that the Giants needed for Daniel Jones. They didn't have.
00:07:43
Should help open things up more for a Sterling Shepard for a year, three receiver and Darius Latin for Jaquan partly out of the backfield.
00:07:50
I feel like that's somewhat obvious, right? But what do you see? The impact of Adoree Jackson being specifically in a number to roll right.
00:08:00
He's even going to be the highest profile, taking the true number ones of the opposition.
00:08:03
At times, he may be able to take advantage of some of those weak or wide receiver matchups.
00:08:08
Well, we know that this is just more and more.
00:08:10
It just continues to become a passing league, and if you don't have guys in the secondary that can cover, you're going to run into these problems.
00:08:17
You look at Dak Prescott throwing the ball all over the place.
00:08:20
You look at the type of wide receivers they have in Dallas.
00:08:21
Like we said before, look at look at the chiefs and the homes like they have so many different weapons that they can plug in interchangeably running backs.
00:08:29
The Giants were a great team against the run last year, and you you need to be at least competent against the run.
00:08:37
But because everything continues to move towards a passing league, the Giants decided by letting Dalvin Tomlinson leave that they needed to focus a priority on the secondary when Adoree Jackson came in.
00:08:47
And so, while we may have traded off to get a little bit worse in the in the run defense, we significantly upgraded our past defense.
00:08:55
And when you add a quarterback number two like that, that allows us to push everyone else in that secondary down in terms of their level of importance.
00:09:03
So a guy like Darnay Holmes or Bill or any of these guys that are coming in and I'll get them you mentioned we're now not relying on them to take, you know, the number two guy on the team, which is which is a huge win for the Giants secondary.
00:09:18
And I also think that it frees up some things when you talk about the egg.
00:09:21
Xavier McKinney's and year number two right Logan Ryan Jabrill Peppers the back end of this defense now gets a whole lot more flexible.
00:09:29
When you think about the idea of, well, Jabrill peppers, maybe you want him down closer into the box, right in run support for structures Like you said, we got a little bit weaker lost Alvin Tomlinson.
00:09:39
But the defense overall feels like it has gotten stronger, so Jabrill Peppers gets a little bit more flexible.
00:09:45
Xavier McKinney, who by all accounts, you know missed time due to the injury, started to flash their late in the year.
00:09:50
I think he offers the most versatility where you could say, Go pick up that wide receiver, get down into the slot, right, drop back and play deep in coverage.
00:09:57
Likewise for Logan, Ryan's will go back last year to think about that.
00:10:01
You grant how much he utilized eyes with versatility, right? And really mix things up.
00:10:07
What you've now done this offseason to me is you've added in more versatility and more options.
00:10:13
And and again, you know, I mean, on paper, you can say the Giants have one of the better.
00:10:17
Secondaries are one of the better defensive units in the league. That's fine.
00:10:20
What I like is just that you've elevated.
00:10:21
We talked about this so much last year, right? Elevated what? The floor is of the talent.
00:10:25
And now you just say, on a week to week basis matchup to match up basis, Patrick Graham and his defense can say, Well, I like the way this looks over here.
00:10:33
Let's force their hand in that direction.
00:10:34
I like what we can do by shutting down the run game, etcetera.
00:10:37
So it's another weapon, and it certainly starts to shift.
00:10:41
I think perspectives on what this team can accomplish.
00:10:44
And that's where we get into the Dave Gettleman piece, right? I think, without without to belabor this but started the offseason, he signs Booker.
00:10:54
Everyone's concerned.
00:10:55
We've got problems right now.
00:10:57
Here we are, though, and we we've talked about this along the way Last year.
00:11:00
The draft was a nice class for him.
00:11:02
You now look back at getting Logan Ryan during the year at signing Blake Martinez, right? Some of the free agents that he brought in as well.
00:11:10
This sets up for legacy solidifying for Dave Gettleman this year, right? I mean, he made the big splashes in free agency.
00:11:17
It's the big year for Daniel Jones under center.
00:11:19
Everything can come to or or disintegrate, you know, around fruition of every step of this process.
00:11:27
Where do you stand on Dave, gentlemen and what he's done? Is this how much I'll put it this way? Because there was big money on these contracts.
00:11:35
Is this him making the big moves? Because it's a part of the building block? Or is this Dave Gettleman, right? Wrong, indifferent, saying this is also the last.
00:11:44
This is my last swing here, right? If it doesn't work this year, it's all gonna come apart around.
00:11:49
We may look back three years from now and say, Man, that Kenny Golladay signing was horrible.
00:11:55
He did not turn out well for the Giants.
00:11:57
How could they have paid him all that money? Right? And hindsight's always 2020 in the moment.
00:12:03
Right now, the Giants need a number one wide receiver, and by all metrics, Kenny Golladay is a number one wide receiver.
00:12:11
He led the league in touchdowns in 2019.
00:12:13
He has had over 1000 yards twice.
00:12:15
He is that type of impact player right now, at 18 million when the cap balloons next year and other guys are going to be commanding 20 to 25 million Like and Allen Robinson, he's going to be paid as like the 10th or 12th highest paid wide receiver.
00:12:31
I mean, that's a home run.
00:12:33
It was an area of need, and we got the best guy available.
00:12:36
There's no there's no other way to to Dyson ****e it other than Dave Gettleman did exactly what he needed to do in that position.
00:12:42
The Adoree Jackson piece is kind of like lucky happenstance that he ends up becoming available when no one understands really why the Titans decided to cut him, but the Giants just gave money to a 25 year old player at a position of need.
00:12:58
Dave Gettleman has been addressing positions of need.
00:13:01
No Zack Fulton, a guard who played for the Houston Texans.
00:13:04
Underrated signing by Dave Gettleman.
00:13:06
He signed.
00:13:07
You know the details of the contract haven't come out yet, but he's adding depth.
00:13:11
Backup veteran Zach Fulton had a 63 pro football focus grade to Will Hernandez is 58.
00:13:17
Even if we just swap out little Hernandez, we're getting better on the offensive line.
00:13:22
You know, to me every single move that Gettleman has made this offseason is great and the number one reason why it's all great Adam is it doesn't pigeonhole us in the draft right now.
00:13:33
100%.
00:13:34
Yet you talk about really what it ends up doing, and in the short and long term, write the contract.
00:13:39
Even for Golladay, the contract for George Jackson.
00:13:41
These aren't you know these are these are gonna be boulders tying us down in a couple of years.
00:13:46
If this were not to pan out, quick side note about them is.
00:13:49
It's interesting that both those players are guys that had injuries last year.
00:13:52
And both those guys are players that they at least want to have conversations with around their attitude with previous organization and what the exit was right.
00:13:59
Tightens move on me because they didn't really appreciate how Adoree Jackson was approaching a playing time, etcetera, the injury.
00:14:06
And when he was healthy enough.
00:14:07
Same thing for Kenny Golladay.
00:14:08
So there were character things to check there.
00:14:11
But I do think you're right when we talk about the draft.
00:14:13
This isn't going to hold back the Giants from doing whatever they want, if anything, by signing holiday by signing Adoree Jackson.
00:14:19
You've now taken two of the top.
00:14:21
Let's say four needs off the board for Big Blue when you talk about offensive line edge rusher, obviously.
00:14:26
And then it was gonna be wide receiver and cornerback.
00:14:28
Not in that order.
00:14:29
But now you've taken two of those off the board.
00:14:31
So now 11, everything can open up for you.
00:14:33
We just saw Joe Judge watching along with Patrick Graham McKay Parsons at his pro day for Penn.
00:14:39
Stan, he looked so good.
00:14:42
Are you kidding me? Like the speed and just him running without a shirt on like he looks like the type of inside linebacker the Giants would would fawn over next to Blake Martinez and the the off the field? You know, concerns or character issues, right? So, again, check those boxes here at the pro day.
00:14:59
Maybe that alleviates it.
00:15:01
Then it opens up Parsons to be a real option at 11, should he make it there.
00:15:04
Likewise, we you know, we talked about Slater so much, I don't know if he's making it to 11.
00:15:09
Seems like he's a name that's rising.
00:15:11
It's why next week on Monday, you'll be able to hear us talking about J.
00:15:14
Stevens from the lockdown Buckeyes podcast.
00:15:16
We asked about Wyatt Davis in that second round, and if maybe he's a target because we don't know what's gonna happen in 11.
00:15:22
Maybe trade down becomes available to your point, though.
00:15:25
This is we're not stuck.
00:15:28
We don't have to do anything at 11.
00:15:31
We don't have to even reach for an edge rusher.
00:15:33
Potentially right.
00:15:34
The, uh, you talk about the Russos of the world.
00:15:37
Even the quickly pays right.
00:15:38
If the value isn't commiserate with the 11th overall pick, then we can go ahead and take a step back from it and assess what's the most valuable.
00:15:45
Maybe there's a trade down scenario that Dave Gettleman is never done.
00:15:48
What do you think the Giants now look at when they see this draft? How are they assessing at 11? Let's just say all things equal, they're staying at 11.
00:15:57
What do you think they view now as the biggest need? And can a talent like Parsons if he's there, override saying, Well, right guard might be the last thing that we really want to check the box of here.
00:16:09
But boy, this talent is too good to pass up.
00:16:11
You think they're still in those waters, or do they have a need that they want at 11? So So what I think this did was was changed.
00:16:20
My perception on what what we need.
00:16:22
I still believe never have enough offensive line we have.
00:16:26
We had Matt Per and Nate Solder and that person at the right tackle.
00:16:31
If we could get a tackle and shore up Jones.
00:16:35
That's still where I think the Giants go.
00:16:37
But really, we're talking about, you know, we don't have that glaring need that we had previously.
00:16:42
For instance, if we don't sign Kenny Golladay and we have a whole at the wide receiver Number one, there's basically three wide receivers and a wide receiver tight end in Kyle pits that are projected to go in the top 10 to 15 picks if all four of those guys are gone and off the board.
00:17:00
The Giants already had the free agency go go by the wayside and they didn't get a number one wide receiver.
00:17:06
They miss out on all the top to your guys.
00:17:08
Where does the Giants go for a number one wide receiver, their their pigeonholed.
00:17:11
They're stuck and they have to cobble something together.
00:17:13
Or they have to trade away future assets to bring someone in.
00:17:16
Now having someone like Holiday Inn, Adoree Jackson these are all luxury picks.
00:17:21
With the exception of maybe Edge Rusher, I think the Giants really have a really well rounded team going into this draft.
00:17:29
Yeah, that that's what that it's so funny, man. And then listen.
00:17:32
You can anticipate the signs that they had, but even the smaller ones you brought an extra linebackers.
00:17:36
Extra defensive ends right back up, offensive lineman just to balance things out there.
00:17:41
There's just no way that you could have anticipated this type of free agency class.
00:17:45
And I think the other thing is to, you know, talk about the wide receive offense alignment.
00:17:50
It's relatively deep at both positions in the draft, and that makes it interesting When you do sign a holiday, I think it's because you don't want it.
00:17:58
You didn't want to end up in that position of being at 11.
00:18:01
Maybe while is there.
00:18:02
But there's been conversations where you know the difference between a waddle and abatement, a waddle and a Marshall Jr Maybe in the Grand scheme of things is not as far apart as you anticipate.
00:18:12
So then you start to say, Well, maybe we could wait to the second round and see what wide receivers are there.
00:18:16
And then we'll take the offensive lineman here.
00:18:17
We'll take this, You know, all of a sudden you're spinning your wheels a little bit.
00:18:20
And we talked about it, I think, just prior to holiday signing where we said, But, boy, you say you wait and then you get a second round and they're not there.
00:18:28
Like all you know, all those little guys you thought would fall in the second round aren't available Now.
00:18:32
You're really saying, How are we gonna stretch here to make sure we fill these needs taking those concerns off the board in so many ways.
00:18:39
Now they get just to approach it with a clear mind.
00:18:41
Uh, let's get out the door on on this, I guess A quick episode here on a Friday before we get into the weekend, do you is there? Let's say there's a world where Kyle Pits does fall to 11.
00:18:56
Uh, the giants still willing to make that move.
00:18:58
Some fans are still saying, Well, adding model that this wide receiving corps now 11, would be just over the same value. Crazy.
00:19:05
You still think through the world where the Giants would take a weapon like that at 11 or to what we've laid out here? We showed up so many positions.
00:19:15
Now we look to the other areas of need and look for best value.
00:19:19
I think there's still a world where we could take someone like Kyle Pits.
00:19:21
I do, because the Giants have created flexibility for themselves.
00:19:25
We talked about how offensive line and edge rusher are too needs for the Giants.
00:19:30
We know that that's they're obviously going to address that at some point in the draft.
00:19:34
But to this point, we don't have those screaming holes anymore that say, You have to go in the first round and and shore that up.
00:19:40
We can go ahead and take, you know, an embarrassment of riches and have Kyle Pits Kenny Golladay, Sterling Shepard, Evan Ingram, Kyle Rudolph.
00:19:48
We could give Daniel Jones all of these different weapons and still go get uh, a Wyatt, uh, from from Ohio State in the second round, we could go get an edge rusher in the third round and still be able to really round out this team.
00:20:03
So I think the Giants have done an amazing job setting themselves up to take the best player available, and not necessarily say we have to take a player at this spot at number 11 because we have such a gaping hole 100%.
00:20:16
So we get out the door on a Friday, we said as I mentioned there a moment ago on Monday, you're going to be able to hear from J.
00:20:23
Stevens covers the Buckeyes for the locked on Buckeyes podcast on the lockdown podcast network.
00:20:29
We break down Wyatt Davis there and what his value could be.
00:20:32
We talk about a number of different linebackers from Browning, right? A late guy like Borland just because we like the late round captains that are maybe limited from an athletic standpoint but have so much value to a team.
00:20:43
And then he even gives us.
00:20:44
We won't gild the lily here, listen to the episode because he brings up a linebacker that is a sneaky pick that's actually further down the draft board that may end up being one of those potential steals of the draft.
00:20:55
We also cover the running Just, you know, full of guys that that really could be potential targets.
00:20:59
So we're really excited to have him on.
00:21:01
It's really just a fantastic conversation is a great guy.
00:21:05
So follow him.
00:21:06
Listen to him.
00:21:07
And, of course, check out that episode.
00:21:09
Other than that, man, I'll just say as we walk out the door here my new guy to have the new name to have on your lips is Joe trying out of Washington? If you're talking about an edge rusher, you're talking about versatility.
00:21:21
Go ahead and sniff them out.
00:21:22
Friends may enjoy what you find.
00:21:25
We'll be back in on Monday, of course.
00:21:26
Talking all things New York football giants.
00:21:28
Until then, as we like to say, people want to know Let's go.
00:21:33
Big Blue, Yes! Mhm, Mhm! Mhm, yeah, Mhm, yeah! Mhm yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
