Welcome to the one giant podcast.
00:00:05
A SportsCastr featured podcasts covering all things.
00:00:08
New York Football giants live every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning on SportsCastr, bringing balance to the ****ytics and emotions of covering Big Blue.
00:00:18
Here are your hosts Adam Arm Brecht and Andy Mecca Wicks.
00:00:23
Mm hmm.
00:00:24
Ah, yes, friends on a Friday morning as free agency continues to roll along around the NFL, I'm Adam, arm wrecked, joined, as always by the healthy, wealthy and wise Andy Markowitz.
00:00:37
I don't know if you know this, Adam, but today is my favorite day of the year.
00:00:44
Opening round March Madness bracket.
00:00:47
I can't get enough Diehard Syracuse fan For the last 20 years, I have taken off every Friday of March madness to sit down cold beer in the hand.
00:00:57
You know, right around the 11 45 starting time.
00:01:00
And I go until I can't drink anymore.
00:01:03
No, um, so obviously going over.
00:01:07
It's just till I can.
00:01:08
I physically can't drink anymore.
00:01:10
Nothing to do with the basketball at that point.
00:01:12
Uh, but just to be clear, um, Syracuse is in.
00:01:15
Then I take it Syracuse snuck in the tournament.
00:01:19
As you can see from my trusty shirt if you're watching on their, um, the one problem that I have at him and this happens every year for me, Syracuse is on the bubble.
00:01:27
They make the tournament, and, of course, they give them the 9 40 or 10 p.m.
00:01:34
game every year.
00:01:35
So when I start drinking at 12, it's very similar to giant fans having the Sunday night football game.
00:01:41
It's like you start at one o'clock and you're having a couple of beers during during the day and then all of a sudden you're like, Man, nine o'clock is forever to watch the Giants.
00:01:50
Oh, my goodness.
00:01:51
All right, so let's, uh Well, good luck to you, sir.
00:01:54
Making the beer flow like wine.
00:01:57
And the and the women like the salmon of the Kappas.
00:02:00
Toronto.
00:02:01
Something along those lines? Um, let's talk.
00:02:03
Obviously, Giants free agency.
00:02:06
Right now.
00:02:07
At this very moment, it could be, uh, you know, flapjacks and bacon at DGS house for kg, Right? Kenny Golladay came in on a plane from Chicago last night.
00:02:18
They had dinner with with Dave.
00:02:20
Gentlemen, we don't know if Joe judge was maybe there or not, but but the process is underway of vetting Kenny Golladay and what would be obviously the biggest piece that the Giants would achieve in this free agency? Um, do you Do you think that it's likely that Kenny Golladay is going to get signed by the Giants because he received a one a one year offer from the Cincinnati Bangles, and at first I wasn't sure what to make of that.
00:02:45
But but reports are it was a substantial offer.
00:02:48
It's a one year deal and a good amount of money.
00:02:50
Maybe Holiday is looking at the multi year deal deal as we would think.
00:02:54
Chicago may still make that offer as well.
00:02:57
Some people think it was a leverage move to get Alan Robinson on the franchise tag.
00:03:02
Maybe they, you know, finna go the numbers a little bit there.
00:03:04
But where do you think the Giants stand right now in their potential pursuit of Katie Holliday? I got him at 80%.
00:03:11
That gala day will be in New York, Giant.
00:03:14
I've got it at 60% that it will be done by the end of the day today.
00:03:18
Um, you know, he flew in yesterday afternoon evening Josina, Anderson and other people reported it.
00:03:23
The meetings didn't all get completed last night, going to be finished this morning.
00:03:28
Like you said, meeting with Gettleman and Joe Judge.
00:03:31
Um, you know the fact that he took the time to fly to New York? All reports are saying that he wants to play in New York, wants to be a giant.
00:03:41
Those are great things Like Giant Fan should be really excited that the number one wide receiver on the market is saying, I want to play in New York and he has enough faith in a guy like Daniel Jones.
00:03:49
Say he's the type of guy that can make me look successful as well.
00:03:53
So all those things considered, I'm cautiously optimistic that the Giants are going to bring him in, and the reason why I'm optimistic about this is because of the price tag.
00:04:03
Since free agency has started, the market on wide receivers has cratered and it's almost like the stock market.
00:04:09
The stocks dip and everyone's afraid to buy all these stocks.
00:04:12
Eventually there comes a price where the stock looks pretty good and if we're saying you know in the off season it looked like Kenny Golladay was going to go for 20 million.
00:04:20
Now reports are saying 13 to 15 million could be the range for holiday.
00:04:24
So it's gonna be interesting if the Giants to sign him.
00:04:27
Let's see exactly how much money he's actually getting well, so that's the other piece of this for me to write.
00:04:32
Uh, it seems like now we know to down Year and there's some other still big names out there at the wide receiver position that are waiting for the holiday piece to fall.
00:04:40
So they kind of see where they can fit in.
00:04:43
Maybe potentially but But the market has started to check off most of these boxes.
00:04:48
Samuel, uh, to division rival Washington football team.
00:04:51
But where do you where do you land? On on the injury piece of it.
00:04:55
And then, apparently something that I didn't really think about or have have an ear to, That there was some level of concern around what happened in Detroit, the exit from there and any potential concerns around, uh, you know, quote character issues.
00:05:11
All right, so there's a little bit to unpack here because Kenny Golladay was the diamond, the crown jewel of the free agency.
00:05:19
Everybody wanted him.
00:05:21
Dolphins were going to be in on it.
00:05:22
They could get him.
00:05:23
Other teams really wanted him.
00:05:24
He was the number one guy and then the wide receiver market creators.
00:05:28
All of a sudden there's a bunch of issues with Kenny Golladay, and now he's toxic.
00:05:33
Nobody wants him.
00:05:34
It's like, How could that have really changed in like of three day span? Um, yeah, really impressive for that to do a complete 1 80.
00:05:41
So the challenges he had a hip injury.
00:05:45
Was it a hip strain? Which it was it a hip flexor? Was it, uh, something torn in his hip? There's a multitude of things that it could have been.
00:05:53
And that's why the Giants are bringing him in to do a little bit of a medical check.
00:05:56
Because if it's just a pointer or strain, those usually take a few weeks to to resolve themselves.
00:06:02
The fact that Golladay didn't play for months of the season could be like a something torn in his hip, which would be much more of a concern for the Giants.
00:06:12
Now, the other piece of it in the quote unquote character concerns piece of it is all around based on that injury, why didn't he play for the last couple of months of the year? Like if it really was just a hip flexor, like he says? And everyone says it was then usually that's a two, maybe four week timeframe, more than enough time to get back out on the field. But he didn't.
00:06:35
So I think a lot of people are having question marks around the idea of what was the injury and the severity of it.
00:06:42
And could you have come back and played for the Lions and giving it your all? Or did you decide to kind of mail it in? Say, I've got free agency to worry about.
00:06:51
I'm not going to risk it, even if I am potentially healthy and so, like, that's That's what's kind of circulating now is let's get down to the details of why he didn't play and I think that's why they're bringing in wanting to do the medical.
00:07:03
But to just to be like shoot me straight like what was the reason why you never got on the field? Was it because you weren't healthy or was it because you were saying man, I really need to take care of myself to make sure I get that paycheck next year.
00:07:14
Well, you know, So it's interesting, too, because as we've said, you know, the injury concern is a concern.
00:07:20
You know, a hip injury is not a great one to be coming off of.
00:07:25
At 27 gonna be 28 years old.
00:07:27
I I do get a little bit torn.
00:07:28
I know how crucial a player like this could be for the Giants offense for Daniel Jones.
00:07:33
Forsake Juan Barkley Just opening things up and really, as we talked last time about let's bring that offense up to a top.
00:07:41
You know, 2018, you know, get into that middle part of the league kind of ranking, and that alone would be a big jump forward and maybe maybe signal that we can get something done when it comes to making the playoffs.
00:07:53
But what I think, I think the most important thing about the Kenny Golladay pieces some people are really high in him.
00:07:59
Some people aren't.
00:08:00
What I can say about all this is if we sign Kenny Golladay, it gives us so much more flexibility throughout the draft and filling out different pieces of our roster because we'll have a big body to 1000 yard seasons.
00:08:15
Led the league in touchdowns as a wide receiver in 2019.
00:08:17
We'd have one of those check boxes where other teams can say All right, they have addressed it.
00:08:22
They could go a multitude of places with the 11th pick or the second round pick.
00:08:26
So the Giants give themselves way more flexibility.
00:08:29
If they block in a position like that, even if you're not as high on him as long as we can get him at a reasonable number.
00:08:35
Yeah, that's fine.
00:08:36
I'll push back on a little bit, just in terms of, you know, one.
00:08:40
I wanted to be clean and clear, I will say, as Joe judges in on these conversations as well.
00:08:44
A light bulb that did go off for me was, Listen, if Joe Judge signs off on it from a character standpoint and you get the medical staff signing off on it, right, But if Joe judge says it's a good move, and then Joe Judge, we trust right like that, that's really where I go.
00:08:58
I could I could get concerned about what maybe Dave Gettleman is thinking of it.
00:09:01
Or if John Merrill walks down from the office and says, I like the cut of this guy's jib, You go, Yeah, that's that's great, Johnny, Head back on upstairs.
00:09:09
So there's that piece of it.
00:09:10
I and the other piece of it of checking the box, you can go to the draft.
00:09:13
That that makes 100% makes sense, right? And there's an element of, you know, we we talked about this.
00:09:19
I think off podcast around.
00:09:20
Listen, the Giants have to kind of accept that Maybe Kyle Pits just is flat out not going to be there at 11.
00:09:25
Right? So if you if you start to anticipate where the top of the draft is gonna go you don't want to over influence what you do in free agency, but you want to take it, take it into account.
00:09:34
I I just don't want this to be a move that the Giants are making out of desperation.
00:09:42
As opposed to This is the guy that we want.
00:09:46
The Giants don't have to be desperate to sign Kenny Golladay.
00:09:50
It's a good movie.
00:09:51
If you can get them, I'd prefer it on a shorter I think if they're going to get and they feel comfortable with them, they'll try to get him on a three year deal, probably.
00:09:57
But don't go into this room.
00:09:59
You know a lot of fans on Twitter and I get it or saying, Don't let him leave the building.
00:10:04
You can leave the building, You can make the offer and you can leave the building and he can make the choice that makes sense for him.
00:10:09
If you want him, then you probably shouldn't get outbid for him, right? Like if you want him, then you should be able to get it done.
00:10:15
And it shouldn't end up being that maybe he takes a one year deal somewhere, right? But I I just All I can do is wait and then, and if they sign them, I'll be happy because I'll trust the process they went through.
00:10:25
And if they don't sign them, I'll be okay with that.
00:10:28
There's two things that Giant fan should be thinking about today.
00:10:32
One is the Giants hired Kyle O'Brien, who was part of the player personnel department under the G M of the Detroit Lions.
00:10:40
Last year, was correct.
00:10:41
So there I know thank you.
00:10:45
I do my research, I do my homework.
00:10:46
And so and so, having Kyle O'Brien on the team.
00:10:49
If he said, This guy quit, we don't want him.
00:10:52
Stay far away from him.
00:10:54
He's toxic.
00:10:55
He wouldn't be coming in for a visit like it's that simple.
00:10:57
Right? Joe? Judge is still friends with Matt Patricia.
00:10:59
He probably called Matt Patricia and said, Hey, buddy, what went on with Kenny Golladay before you got let go? Like, was he the reason why you had had struggles like, what was the challenge here? So keep in mind, the Giants have someone that has inner knowledge of what happened with holiday there.
00:11:13
Uh, that's the first thing.
00:11:14
The second thing is because the market has come down so great on on on wide receivers.
00:11:20
Look at a guy like Art Stapleton, great beat writer for the Giants, knows the inside out.
00:11:24
People were asking on Twitter.
00:11:26
What do you think the number is that that that could, this could potentially be at He's like Well, to be honest, I think Golladay realizes that this market tanked.
00:11:33
He needs to sign a deal.
00:11:34
He's like I could see a two year $26 million deal for Kenny Golladay, which I mean, that's literally the same deal that Nelson angle or just signed with the Patriots.
00:11:46
And if you ask me, would I rather have Kenny Golladay 2000 yard seasons six and four huge body or Nelson Agler like that? It's not even a question, right? So, yeah, by the way, you know a Galore who signed very early in the free agent process.
00:11:58
I think that, um, you know, he grabbed that bag real fast and sometimes do.
00:12:02
And by the way, you know, we we can still will look back on this and I'll still be confident in the signing of Booker.
00:12:08
But the same kind of thing, right? When you sign it early, you don't know how the rest of the market's gonna look.
00:12:12
And sometimes you will spend a little bit I'd rather have over spent quote unquote on Booker at three million a year than on a glory 13.
00:12:19
Because if you look across the league and all of a sudden you see Gala, they sign a similar kind of check.
00:12:24
Boy, are you going to say Well, so we could We could have had any college for a couple of a couple of years of 13 million.
00:12:29
So very interesting to see how it plays out and the wide receiver market look.
00:12:35
Will Fuller signed a one year, $10 million deal.
00:12:37
He was considered one of the top four guys on the market.
00:12:40
The Patriots spent 13 year on a multi year deal for Nelson Agholor, like the market is coming down significantly.
00:12:47
And you know Golladay having all of these challenges.
00:12:51
The Bengals only offer him offering him a one year deal.
00:12:53
This could be the perfect storm for the Giants to come in.
00:12:56
Offer him a two year deal, makes the money, gets to play in New York.
00:13:00
And guess what? He's back out on the market when he's 29 years old and he can go for that one more contract when the cap is skyrocketing from where it is this year.
00:13:09
So maybe one of the only potential speed bump is that Kenny Golladay would prefer a one year deal, right? Would prefer to just be able to reset the market for himself, and the Giants would rather have, uh, the opportunity to keep this play around at least for a couple of seasons because, as you said, if you want to be able to take off something from your books from your draft needs, well, depending on what happens and how it shakes out, you might say wide receivers still there, right? Well, wide receivers still gonna be a need because we're only a year away from Kenny Golladay hitting the market again.
00:13:37
Now, numbers will be different.
00:13:38
They could bring them back if they want to, but a 28 going to be 29 year old wide receiver.
00:13:43
It's gonna be hard to find those numbers again.
00:13:46
And maybe there's going to be a team that will give the multi year deal that being the case around this hopefully today, right? Sometime today, maybe we get the information one way or the other about holiday, but the Giants continue to make moves.
00:13:58
You know, Jordan Brennan said this last week.
00:14:00
I think handful of days ago that hey, if the Giants want to make moves, the money is there to do it.
00:14:05
They can make the money work, they can sign free agents and we all kind of said, All right, you know, I mean, we just assume when you say you got no cap room, that that's it and you're you're really restricted and we see the way the Rams approach free agency.
00:14:16
You go. I guess anything's possible.
00:14:18
Friends and the Giants do get a lot done here, a big one.
00:14:22
And I think one that has an impact across the roster is the signing of former Vikings tight end Kyle Rudolph Now.
00:14:29
Initially, it was thought to be a two year, $16 million deal.
00:14:33
Official numbers that came in our two years, 12 million 4.
00:14:38
5, guaranteed in the signing bonus and the first year cap.
00:14:41
It is going to be 4.
00:14:42
75 million in totality now, knowing that the scope, the scope of that contract.
00:14:49
But how do you feel about that signing? How do you feel about him inside this offense? What was your what was your first? What was your immediate reaction to the signing of Rudolph? My immediate reaction was, Wow, that's a lot of money for Rudolph at two years, $16 million like, you know that to me.
00:15:05
I was I was very concerned when I first saw that on my geez, what could the number be? And then I went into a couple of different things, which I'm sure most giant fans did.
00:15:13
One.
00:15:14
What does this mean for Evan Ingram? Right, Because you're you're spending that much money on another tight end.
00:15:19
And two, it was in the draft.
00:15:21
The Giants are admitting they're waving the white flag, saying there is no chance that Kyle Pits ever gets to us at 11, like basically reading the tea leaves, saying, We have no opportunity.
00:15:32
So let's go spend, you know, the dollars in an area we could.
00:15:36
Then, as you mentioned, the numbers start to reveal themselves.
00:15:39
It's not 16.
00:15:40
It's not 14.
00:15:41
It's 12 million with a bunch of different incentives.
00:15:44
It's $4.
00:15:45
7 million in terms of the cap hit for the Giants in year one.
00:15:48
And all of a sudden, like that's pretty reasonable.
00:15:51
Like, you know, he's a He's a great tight end.
00:15:54
He's he's a good complement, you know he's getting older in age and so you shouldn't expect to produce.
00:16:00
Three years ago, John Well, and that's kind of the the the interested in 31 years old, right? So you think, you know, closer to the end than the beginning, but still a quality player quality contributor in the past blocking game as well.
00:16:22
Um, you know so And the other piece that initially clicked in my head was Jason Garrett likes to run the too tight end set.
00:16:28
No matter how you want to shake this out.
00:16:30
You know, some fans are speculating around what it would mean for Evan Ingram.
00:16:33
Does that mean having Ingram is automatically gone? It immediately triggered in my head.
00:16:37
You know, you can listen to me last year or the year before whenever you want to do it moved on from him, You're gonna get diminished returns if you trade him now anyway.
00:16:44
And by the way, in a down cap here, it's probably gonna be even harder to move that $6 million to another team.
00:16:50
But even even outside of that, because I actually I don't think that this is indicative of anything.
00:16:54
I don't think that signing Rudolph means that Evan Ingram is gone.
00:16:57
I just think that it means it's going to give this Giants offense the flexibility to say, Hey, Ingram, we don't have to have you on the field and too tight end sets.
00:17:05
Necessarily when we want to have the options to run or to pass now, we feel like we've brought in another element that will allow us to take everything and say, Hey, let's run those end arounds from the outside right? Get the ball into your hands in creative ways and maybe reduce the percentage of steps that you're on the field and maximize the value you get from them.
00:17:22
That's what I think the Giants plan to do with everything or if they don't and you know there's, there's some chance that they could move them.
00:17:28
But I don't think that Joe Judge comes out and gives the vote of confidence as you have highlighted a couple weeks ago.
00:17:34
I don't think you do that without some level of intent behind it, right, And maybe the Rudolph piece came out of nowhere.
00:17:42
But I just think it introduces a more traditional style tight end that Jason Garrett knows how to use like a Jason Witten right, and and it just creates this stability and level Nece across that offense.
00:17:54
There's three things that this that that I think about when I take the next step and think a little bit deeper.
00:18:00
One is that Kevin Smith or Toy Polo is not going to be on this roster come Week one, because you can't have four tight ends being active knowing that Rudolph and Ingram are going to be here.
00:18:08
I don't think it impacts them.
00:18:09
One of them is going to go.
00:18:10
They just restructured toy solo.
00:18:12
So it might even be Kevin Smith that that ends up having to go, that that's number one and tell a little about the way, though it just deals like that when they get restructured down to a vet minimum.
00:18:21
Essentially, that's the kind of contracts that also gets cut.
00:18:24
That same officer, right? It doesn't restrict them from moving on from that, just for for fans, you know, reference when right? The second thing is you mentioned something to me while we were texting back and forth, and at this point now, knowing the details of Rudolf, it's your tight end room for your to starting tight ends is about $10.
00:18:39
5 million almost almost $11 million.
00:18:43
The Patriots just got to $10 million plus tight ends on the roster.
00:18:47
So spending 11 million for two tight ends, not the end of the world for the Giants.
00:18:50
They can certainly afford it so that, you know, kudos to you for saying that I was like, Yeah, totally.
00:18:54
And the last thing I will say is you must be doing backflips.
00:18:58
I'm convinced, Adam, that you are the happiest person other than Kyle Rudolph getting the money.
00:19:03
Because Kyle Rudolph is literally the antithesis of Evan Ingram.
00:19:09
And I'll tell you why one once super athletic, the other one is like the plotting traditional tight end number two.
00:19:17
You, you've, uh, you've criticized I've been critical of Evan Engram for some of his drop passes.
00:19:23
Did you know that Kyle Rudolph hasn't dropped a pass in two years like he just doesn't drop ball.
00:19:29
So, like he is that trusty reliable guy, He also, thirdly, is a huge and massive red zone target.
00:19:37
He's one of the most targeted tight ends in the red zone in the league over the last five years.
00:19:42
He is the guy that you look at that can create his own space.
00:19:44
Big body, can go up and catch balls and, like you said, won't won't be, won't be a drop.
00:19:49
You know, someone that we're concerned about drops with.
00:19:50
He provides really good pass blocking.
00:19:54
He's a little questionable in his run blocking.
00:19:55
So he does a lot of the things that I think you have been critical of Evan Ingram for not doing in the past 100% like I want reliability and consistency at any position.
00:20:07
But when you're getting a sample size from you and you keep seeing over and over that he is not consistent and all that athleticism that I get it, it's tantalizing, right? But guess what? It's only it's only worth it being so tantalizing if it converts at some point.
00:20:22
And the red zone piece is really important because he hasn't had been a big catch guy over the last couple of years.
00:20:27
And yet he still has tremendous value in the most important part of the field, an area where, by the way, the Giants have also struggled at times to convert in the red zone.
00:20:37
So I think it really helps and allows us to.
00:20:41
But I'll say factors into the kensho golly situation as well, right? You get a big bodied, reliable red zone receiver.
00:20:48
I mean, he's tight end position.
00:20:49
And no, this isn't apples to apples, right? But just knowing that you have that they're at least lets you go into these negotiations saying, What if it doesn't work out? We mentioned John Ross the other day, right? What if it doesn't work out? We still made this wide receiver tight end group better, stronger this off season, so I think it's a great signing.
00:21:06
The first name that pops in my head was Kevin Boss.
00:21:09
You know, the kind of tight end that the Giants have had that you just go.
00:21:14
Oh, thanks so much now.
00:21:16
And, by the way, Kyle Rudolph, much more accomplished than than Kevin balls over the course of his career.
00:21:20
But a guy that when you look at them on the field, you're not like watch out this guy.
00:21:25
It's almost the dude you forget about.
00:21:26
And then all of a sudden he's catching a touchdown from Daniel Jones from 15 yards out in the red zone, and it's thanks so much will take six.
00:21:34
Uh, I think going into this offseason, giant fans were screaming, We gotta give Daniel Jones a fair shake he hasn't had the offensive weapons on the field.
00:21:45
Sequin Barkley has been hurt.
00:21:46
There hasn't been a true number. One.
00:21:48
Golden Tate really didn't play well.
00:21:49
Evan Ingram had his challenges last year.
00:21:52
Darius Leighton, you know, was was a very boomer bust type of guy.
00:21:56
Sterling Shepard, you know, has had injury concerns over the last couple of years.
00:22:00
Can't stay on the field now.
00:22:02
All of a sudden you've added John Ross. Speedster.
00:22:04
You've added a reliable, big body tight end to help Daniel Jones in the red zone.
00:22:09
You potentially are adding a 6 ft, 4000 yards wide receiver, double digit touchdown guy in Kenny Golladay.
00:22:16
Sick one is going to be healthy.
00:22:17
You have someone backing them up in Booker that that you paid decent money to.
00:22:21
You really have all the compliments.
00:22:24
They're the only thing that the Giants need to do is either sign an offensive lineman or draft an offensive lineman.
00:22:30
And then you've basically said we're giving you as much as we possibly can to try to make this work on offense.
00:22:35
We've revamped our defense.
00:22:37
Now it's time for you to show up and show out.
00:22:39
Daniel Jones and And by the way, it's almost, regardless, that it's that it's Kyle Rudolph, even regardless, that it's Kenny Golladay in year number three for Daniel Jones.
00:22:49
The biggest thing to figure out this year is Is he our guy, right? Take away some of the some of the legitimate excuses about talent and things around him, and then listen.
00:22:57
Health is just the reality, right? Take one, Barkley coming back.
00:23:00
But if you can do that, then you get to turn around and say, in Year three, the statue should be very indicative of what this quarterback is and what he can be going forward.
00:23:10
So yes, 100%.
00:23:11
The last domino to fall here is gonna be offensive line and and, you know, you know, I'll keep banging that That's later Drum at 11.
00:23:17
And I think that that would be a great way to complete this offensive line and going to the season Feeling very confident.
00:23:22
Now, on the other side of the ball, though, there have been things happening there.
00:23:27
Quick footnote.
00:23:28
I just very quickly and I'm not even gonna let you respond to it.
00:23:30
The Giants signed Mike Glennon.
00:23:32
They're going to move on from Colt McCoy.
00:23:34
That's an upgrade.
00:23:35
He's a better quarterback. Colt McCoy.
00:23:37
It's nice to see that marginal upgrade in the lot in the locker room There a just in case safeguard against injury for Daniel Jones.
00:23:43
Loved that movie.
00:23:45
The other big ones for me, though, on the defensive side of the bowl, a guy like and, uh, listen, forgive me for maybe maybe almost certainly butchering this, And that's saying, uh, Odenigbo signing for the Giants is a sneaky good pick up there.
00:24:02
And then they also signed another linebacker, though.
00:24:04
Andy, how do you see it balancing out the way they approach on the defensive side of the ball? Coming off a year where you had take, Crowder is a big contributor. Mr Irrelevant.
00:24:13
I liked him.
00:24:14
I think he was good, right? But there's a weakness in this defense.
00:24:17
Uh, you're gonna have obviously a player like Ocean examiners coming back from injury.
00:24:22
You're going to have Lorenzo Carter coming back from injury.
00:24:24
But inside at the inside linebacker position.
00:24:26
Not a ton of depth knowing as great as we feel about Blake Martinez.
00:24:31
He is a in the box run stuffing, you know, fairly.
00:24:36
One dimensional.
00:24:37
Not a knock kind of inside linebacker and leader of that unit.
00:24:40
What else did the Giants do here in free agency to help that? Yeah.
00:24:43
So you you talked about the kind of the edge rusher that picked up from the Minnesota Vikings? I think it's a good deal.
00:24:49
It's It's for $2.5 million.
00:24:51
He had 10.
00:24:52
5 sacks over the last two years.
00:24:53
Can get to the quarterback.
00:24:55
Low risk for the Giants.
00:24:56
I mean, 2.
00:24:57
5 million.
00:24:58
You know, this is basically slotting into where the Cuyler fattening on what they pay Kyler Fackrell.
00:25:02
They paid him $4 million.
00:25:03
It's a high upside deal where if he can get four or five sacks on a $2.
00:25:07
5 million contract, you pretty much would sign up for that today as a rotational piece.
00:25:12
I think obviously it doesn't fully address it, but what the Giants are looking at is they couldn't get a big edge rusher and free agency.
00:25:19
So now they're going to try to cobble this thing together with a couple of different guys and that 2 to $5 million range and hope that one hits and and that's fine.
00:25:28
That's the approach.
00:25:29
You can't have star players in every position.
00:25:31
I do like the pick up of Reggie Ragland from the Detroit Lions linebacker.
00:25:37
It can can complement Blake Martinez and probably will move in and out with Take Crowder alongside Blake, but also gives a little insurance that we can rotate people around.
00:25:47
He's signing for like one of the veteran minimums, which is under a million dollars, comes from Detroit.
00:25:52
So again, the Kyle O'Brien connection was like, This is a guy that you can bring into your rotation is not going to break the bank.
00:25:58
I like what the Giants are doing now, like it started out on Monday like, What are the Giants doing? And slowly but surely, things are starting to take form where you're like, I can see this roster being complemented and put together properly.
00:26:11
Yeah, that's what I think it feels like to me, you know, lie again.
00:26:15
We talk about this team trying to be able to, you know, turn the corner and be competitive.
00:26:19
And we say last year, right, you take the listen.
00:26:21
You were competing for a division doesn't matter what the terms of that were.
00:26:25
But you were there, you were part of it.
00:26:27
And and a lot of it was being done with Take Crowder being a piece of it, right? With Darnay Holmes learning on the fly, you know, a lot of young talent and now supplementing that with some and you mentioned factor there, right, That's a little bit of an upgrade, their and at a better, better price point.
00:26:43
So you bring in someone who is equal or maybe a little bit better than factual, and you reduce the number and then take crowder.
00:26:49
You like the way he looked.
00:26:50
But do you want to have him on the field for 70% of the stops? Maybe not.
00:26:55
Maybe you want the flexibility to have him on.
00:26:57
Listen, by the way, maybe you want to have the ability to take Blake Martinez off the field.
00:27:01
I'm not saying, you know, in a world that's the choice you need to make, But wouldn't it be nice if you have the flexibility on the roster to say, Oh, Blake has to come off for a rep? We don't feel like we have an enormous hole sitting there now in the middle of our lineup, right? So that was pretty good.
00:27:17
Um, as far as a value signing and the other piece, as far as cost cause I know down market, But going back to last year, it seems like a lot of people were noble and a lot of these panned out.
00:27:26
By the way, the Blake Martinez numbers seemed lost.
00:27:29
Almost 10 year for three years, Good Lord, and about two games in the season.
00:27:33
Everyone went 10 year for three years.
00:27:36
Good Lord.
00:27:37
So the that that perception shifted this year, it feels like most of the contracts that are being given out feel like they fall in where everyone is pretty excited about the value you're getting back on some of these players, Um, maybe shy of Booker.
00:27:49
But again that that could play itself out to to end up working itself into value.
00:27:53
Um, the other thing that you mentioned, there was the way the way that people felt, the way that fans felt coming into it.
00:27:59
Right? And having Booker be the first big signing that to fall.
00:28:04
You're like what? Yeah, backup running back.
00:28:08
You get guaranteed money, too early on.
00:28:10
It's the same reason that you talked about before Nelson, Angular.
00:28:12
Grab that money right to be getting a free agency.
00:28:15
$13 million.
00:28:16
Now you're looking at the wide receiver market and everyone's like, Man that he took.
00:28:21
He put one over on the Patriots, and that's that was the frustration that I had originally with the Booker deal is like there's still 15 of the top 20 running backs are still sitting out there on the market in terms of free agents.
00:28:32
It's like at some point that they're gonna have to sign and they're gonna sign for a lower number than Booker.
00:28:37
And I have a feeling you're gonna see a handful of guys that you're like.
00:28:40
That's all they paid him.
00:28:41
We could have this guy three weeks later and paid him half the amount that we pay Booker and and I think that's where we're just going to be frustrated.
00:28:49
But I will say it's going to be the difference of a million dollars, right? It's, you know, these guys are gonna send for 1.
00:28:54
5 and said 2.
00:28:55
7 or whatever it's going to be, so I've come back off the ledge because we've made other moves and we started rounding out the roster.
00:29:03
We've shown that we have cap flexibility, and what I find interesting is the Giants could have restructured Blake, Martinez or Bradbury or others, and they actually don't need to announce it.
00:29:12
It's like some some technical thing that could just do where they convert to contract so they could be restructuring that we don't happen already.
00:29:18
That's why they've been able to do everything exactly.
00:29:20
We don't know, or they could be doing it to free up money for holiday.
00:29:23
We don't know.
00:29:24
They don't have to say it outwardly.
00:29:25
They generally do, but they don't want to tip their hand to people.
00:29:28
Um, so there still could be money for holiday to be had.
00:29:31
So I I anticipate the Giants signing Golladay.
00:29:35
I really hope it's under $15 million a year.
00:29:38
If it's more than that, I'm going to kind of grit my teeth and and and deal with it that two year, 26 million that aren't Stapleton put out.
00:29:45
I feel like if you get that, that's a home run for the Giants because it's not really fully investing in him.
00:29:50
You get the best years of his career still to be had.
00:29:52
And you're getting a top flight right receiver for 13 million.
00:29:55
Yeah, I don't I don't mind stemming the tide right of getting to that next piece.
00:29:59
Let's touch in on that.
00:30:00
The real quicker is over on on YouTube.
00:30:03
I'm gonna call you a fed.
00:30:05
I'm just gonna call you Fed one because you got a lot of letters there, buddy. But I do it like you.
00:30:08
And I do appreciate your coming in on it.
00:30:09
Um, you know, he he mentions there because I want to buy it back into holiday a little bit that the first thing that happens is you get sick, Juan Barkley back to kind of that rookie form.
00:30:17
When you get a big bodied receiver, a number one on the field just opens things up again.
00:30:21
And then also Daniel Jones reaches his potential.
00:30:24
So just from that, that that that ties in.
00:30:25
We said it earlier there to mentioning Daniel Jones and establishing what he is for for second party.
00:30:31
Coming off of an injury surrounding the offense with with so much talent that the open holes and the ease of getting back into his rhythm should be that much more achievable for Cyclone Barkley.
00:30:43
It doesn't hurt, so everybody gets impacted.
00:30:45
Positive.
00:30:46
If you bring a player like Holiday two things around that that we can kind of get out of here on one.
00:30:52
If the Giants signed holiday, some fans still prescribe to the idea that you take, say, a waddle at 11.
00:30:59
If he's there and and and now look at what this? This ****nal of weapons is start there.
00:31:05
Do you agree with that? No, I don't know how how much I could say no, but it's like think about all of our other needs.
00:31:13
If we sign Golladay and we have got a Sterling Shepard Dari Slaten, two tight ends that we're presuming to pay good money to to start, then we also have John Ross.
00:31:24
We've got CJ board.
00:31:25
We've got Austin back.
00:31:26
We've got a whole host of guys are offensive weapons are complete.
00:31:30
At that point, there's no reason to go reach for for a wide receiver when we know desperately that we need offensive line help or edge Ridge help or cornerback number to help like those are way more important for us, then getting a jail and waddle at that point.
00:31:45
Like either trade back or give me.
00:31:47
You know, Matthew Slater.
00:31:48
Give me someone to solidify things to say.
00:31:50
All right? We're really rounding out this.
00:31:52
It would feel like a surplus at the wide receiver position if we do end up signing holiday, right with holes in other places.
00:31:58
Yeah.
00:31:59
I mean, listen, I I made I made the assessment.
00:32:01
I'm not I'm not locked into it.
00:32:03
But that you sign Rudolph, if you're gonna keep Ingram, you brought in John Ross.
00:32:08
All these guys are not Golladay but doing those things I said, Listen, it doesn't have to be a lot that you take a wide receiver at 11, even if you don't sign holiday.
00:32:16
So you're never going to get me to sign holiday and then also doubled down in that regard? Well, Adam, the whole thing is going into this offseason.
00:32:24
We did our off season plans on who we would sign and who we wouldn't.
00:32:27
So far, it's playing out pretty much the way that I had anticipated it.
00:32:31
The other thing I said at 11 was I wanted to draft an offensive lineman.
00:32:34
I said, You can't have enough offensive lineman.
00:32:36
And what's funny is it's all kind of moving in that direction now.
00:32:40
I thought we would probably spend you know, the 8 to $10 million for an A J.
00:32:44
Green or T Y Hilton.
00:32:46
Not necessarily go top market for Kenny Golladay.
00:32:49
That would be a pleasant surprise for me.
00:32:50
But all these moves are exactly how you round out the team to try to compliment, you know, support Daniel Jones, give him the weapons, give him the security blankets, but also give him protection.
00:33:01
We need to spend somehow on offensive line, and I like being able to get someone like Slater or Elijah, Vera Tucker or whoever we want in that 11 range if they If the Giants do not sign Golladay, if he does leave and it's a one year deal we offer and the Bangles one is better.
00:33:18
Whatever the case may be, do the Giants should the Giants pivot to cornerback as the number one piece that you would look to achieve before the draft, say it is a butler or any of these veterans.
00:33:29
It's all veterans, for the most part right now, but would you look to find a one year veteran to bring in there? Do you think that because the Giants weren't, you know, go back to the start of free agency? Right Giants were connected to the Leonard Fluid.
00:33:40
So they were.
00:33:41
They were interested in improving that position.
00:33:43
Giants weren't connected to cornerbacks, right? They were.
00:33:46
They're connected to God.
00:33:47
They want to improve the business.
00:33:48
They signed receivers, so I think it's been pretty straightforward.
00:33:51
They haven't been attached to any position that they haven't ended up signing guys at.
00:33:56
So should they go that route before the draft? Maybe edge rusher? Or do you think you know, sub supplemental question? Do you think that the Giants, maybe you're a little bit more confident on the across from Bradbury? Whether it is Sam Bill, you know Darnay Holmes played a little bit on the outside.
00:34:11
You have Julian love flashing down there.
00:34:13
Do you think that there's a world where the Giants are either more confident there? Then maybe fans are with who they have on the roster or that may be a position.
00:34:22
You know, we kept saying it.
00:34:23
Wide receiver, offensive line, edge rusher.
00:34:27
Maybe cornerback is a little bit higher up on their draft board right now in terms of how they're going to approach this, including even though I wouldn't agree at 11.
00:34:37
If a Patrick's are Tan, the second were to fall there.
00:34:40
You know the Giants.
00:34:41
Maybe you're gonna pull that trigger and say, Boom, now we have the young stud to pair with our veterans, So there's a couple of different ways the Giants can go about this.
00:34:49
I personally, if the Giants are looking to make the playoffs next year, would prefer the Giants looking at the veteran market for a cornerback.
00:34:57
While we still develop guys on our raw start like you, said Darnay Holmes and Julian Love, I don't know if we don't necessarily need to invest a first round pick in another cornerback.
00:35:07
I would be fine if we if we did get someone like certain or Farley or whoever up early.
00:35:11
I'd much prefer a Malcolm Butler, Adoree Jackson.
00:35:15
You know, there's a bunch of cornerbacks on the market that would be an upgrade at cornerback number two for the Giants.
00:35:20
I like addressing it that way and then focusing that first round pick on either an edge rusher or an offensive lineman.
00:35:27
Both that are that are very difficult to get on the open market.
00:35:30
As you can see, we haven't really been able to strike gold on an edge rusher.
00:35:33
Someone like, uh, equity pay from from, uh, Michigan Could be someone that the Giants look at, but really, I'm focused and zeroed in on that offensive line in the first round.
00:35:43
Let's invest in it and give Daniel Jones every opportunity to be the franchise quarterback because none of this matters.
00:35:49
If he's not the guy, then we got to reset the whole entire thing.
00:35:53
So let's find out if he's the guy by giving him time, because he had no time to throw the ball last year.
00:35:59
No, 100%.
00:36:00
So, listen.

00:36:18
We're gonna know where we stand on Golladay.
00:36:20
Know where we stand heading into the draft, potentially.
00:36:23
And if it is that case, it's still as you're hearing from us offensive line in the first before all else we'll we'll see how it all shakes out.
00:36:31
We'll be right back in on Monday, probably with a big breakdown around either the excitement or disappointment of what occurred on a Friday go Syracuse in the tournament.
00:36:39
And as Andy McElroy's wants needs and demands that, you know, as always, let's go Big Blue.
00:36:45
Yes, sir.
00:36:49
Mhm.
00:36:57
