00:01:16
I know you're gonna keep it, Riel.
00:01:17

00:01:22
Not only were you a great basketball player, you're a great person.
00:01:27

00:01:29
Because, Lawrence, as you know, you're not way Speak all the time.
00:01:32
And probably 90% of our talks are about everything but basketball.
00:01:38
We talked about life, our kids, what's going on in the world? You know, we said we'd be on the phone sometimes.
00:01:43
Like two little girls were on the phone for, like, an hour, hour and a half.
00:01:47
So, normally, during this time, I tell them, like, you know, you're born and raised in Washington D C way no, your accolades.
00:01:54
I want you and please touch on the promise on too.
00:01:58
But I want you to tell us in your own words.
00:02:01
How are you doing today? What are you doing today and how you feeling today? Yeah, First of all, I'm feeling blessed.
00:02:08
Okay? It's always a blessing.
00:02:10
The wake up, especially with everything that's going on in the world we live in right now, you know? And I take it one day at a time.
00:02:18
Deb, I've been blessed to have good family, strong family, who told me, uh, great things as far as being respectable, you know? You know, I preached that one word right now.
00:02:32
You know, as you know, I'm dealing with the promise zone.
00:02:35
It's It's a mentor and specialist group who deals with kids and the surface and surround the community.
00:02:42
And, uh, I got my degree in education of Syracuse, so we just wasn't a baller way.
00:02:48
Got that? We got that piece of paper, so that's a blessing, man.
00:02:52
And I'm just here to give back and teach the youth.
00:02:56
You know that no matter where you come from, you know, if you if you do positive things, you work hard, you stay committed, you know? And just try to be a good person.
00:03:07
You know everything else to take care of itself.
00:03:09
Man, Uh, I'm here in Syracuse, and I've been living here for about 2.
00:03:13
5 3 years now, and, uh, this is my second home born and raised in the D C area.
00:03:18
But Syracuse is definitely my second home, and I go back to what my mother told me.
00:03:23
That makes the rest in peace.
00:03:24
One of the things that she told me when I came to Syracuse, She said, Just don't stay up there on that hill, you know, get to know the people in the town.
00:03:34
And I was blessed to know a lot of people that are from Syracuse, born and bred.
00:03:38
And, uh, you know, I just I just love it here.
00:03:42
And they got good community, man, strong community, you know, strong community.
00:03:46
Well, you and I both We both love Syracuse and I, you know, I'm going to take it back to my very first day on campus as I when I as a sign player, we can actually hang out now.
00:03:58
And I'm gonna take it back to the red Acura Legend had read act and you came to pick me up and we go down the Thorn Park and we play one on one toe.
00:04:10
Hunted.
00:04:11
Uh, I'm reluctant to tell people that I did lose that game under the like 97 95.
00:04:18
Whatever it was we played.
00:04:19
I mean, he's out there playing for, like, five hours.
00:04:21
But that day I earned your respect.
00:04:23
And you already have my respect because what you did in the Big East as a rookie a za freshman, I should say, and all the numbers you put up with all the records you broke and all the rest some of your records still stand, which is incredible.
00:04:34
But, you know, let's just go back to that day.
00:04:38
What did you feel? How did you feel about me? Um, you know that first day and we when we really sat down and we really because we went at it.
00:04:46
Absolutely, absolutely.
00:04:48
You know, you know, one of things I love about you, man.
00:04:51
I will always truly love you.
00:04:53
First of all, he's my favorite team mate.
00:04:55
You know, I tell you that all the time.
00:04:57
My years of Syracuse would definitely my favorite teammates, but it was even before you got here.
00:05:04
Got the Syracuse.
00:05:05
I think you were planning the AU game and Manley Fieldhouse and Coach Boeheim had made sure he's like Lawrence.
00:05:14
We got John.
00:05:15
Wall is coming, and he's planning the AU and Manley Fieldhouse.
00:05:18
I think you I think you need to be there, son.
00:05:21
Thinks guy.
00:05:22
Look, this guy's, you know, possibly going to be with you for three out of your four years.
00:05:27
You know, I saw you out there, so I had to put on a show.
00:05:30
For whatever tell you, the crazy thing is, I remember opening the door but manly Yo, yo.
00:05:37
I was playing and he was coming on a breakaway dunk.
00:05:40
Yo, and you don't enjoy.
00:05:43
And as we open the door, man, you dumped it and you looked over at this man and I was like, Oh, yeah, that's my man.
00:05:49
Gotta get hit, man.
00:05:51
We need this way on.
00:05:54
All Boeheim did was talk great things about you, like, you know, And I started to do my homework, man.
00:06:00
You know, im That's another thing.
00:06:02
I was a student of the game, too.
00:06:03
So I did.
00:06:05
I looked at your little bio and checked out.
00:06:07
You know, the great things you did up in Rochester and everything.
00:06:09
So it was a blessing, man, that you came here And, you know, we had three great years together, Man.
00:06:18
Three great years together to this day.
00:06:20
Still, the only two players and Syracuse history scored 2000 or more points on the same team.
00:06:27
So many dudes could say that on the same team we got nickel, double, double, No doubt my great It was at one point.
00:06:36
You know, I knew at all the guys, you know, I respected everybody on the team.
00:06:40
But I knew for a fact that, you know, when he was out there with me, I knew somebody.
00:06:46
I felt like my man had my back, you know? So it was just always, you know, straight love, man.
00:06:51
And then going to like I said then from that point of, you know, getting to know you and then to come when you came here and we played them.
00:07:00
We love the game.
00:07:01
Uh, we ain't gonna stop playing.
00:07:03
We could, you know, You know how we go.
00:07:05
We could way.
00:07:06
Could play all day every day because we truly love the game and way new as far as our passion, understanding that, you know, no doubt I was gonna get to the NBA, and I know you felt the same way.
00:07:19
And it was even gonna be MBA NFL with me.
00:07:22
And that's my mentality that I thought when I was I am 56th grade.
00:07:27
You know, I e really saw it, man.
00:07:30
There was no doubt in my mind.
00:07:31
And that's what I tell you now if you truly wanted, you gotta see it.
00:07:36
You gotta see it happening before it happened.
00:07:38
Man, there's so many times that I go back to what I used to do was faras my, my my little crazy ways.
00:07:45
I called him a Sfar is just loving the game, man.
00:07:49
Like playing football by myself out in the park, you know? So I'm offense defense by myself, you know? You know, little, just little things like that.
00:07:58
You know, playing with the little football man on the floor.
00:08:00
Like playing the game within a game like that, too, you know, keeping Magic Johnson and them stacks.
00:08:07
You know, when they played on CBS, You know, I used to rebound points or sit.
00:08:11
You don't have to tell me how many points he had because I already knew already do the stat line and the numbers and all that man.
00:08:19
So I was really I don't It was weird, man.
00:08:23
I mean, I just go back to the like from times when my mother used to my football uniforms.
00:08:28
She used to have my football uniforms and, you know, wash it.
00:08:32
So the next day I would later I had two bands in my room, dub two beds in my room, E You know, there was, like, bunk beds.
00:08:40
They want across from each other.
00:08:42
I wanna cross me.
00:08:43
So boom.
00:08:44
I would later, I would lay the uniforms on the bed.
00:08:47
Uh, I would let my whole uniforms on the bed, my cleats and everything on the on the floor, And I would get the other bed and go lay down and close my eyes and envision me doing great things.
00:08:58
No down.
00:08:59
And it came to fruition.
00:09:01
So, you know, that's what I meant about, you know, truly seeing it happened, You know, I was big on that man.
00:09:07
You'll be able to free throw line.
00:09:08
Like is the time you was in your room by yourself on the little nerve court, Uh, and you hit the bucket.
00:09:16
Just live, man.
00:09:17
You know, just little things like that, man.
00:09:20
So, you know, I've been blessed, man.
00:09:22
And I had great people around me like yourself, man.
00:09:24
And, uh, now I'm gonna take you back.
00:09:27
Because the Boston shooting I was the first time I saw you play.
00:09:32
Uh, the game I saw you play, you had 37 points and remember Wayne Morgan at the time.
00:09:39
Who's our assistant coach? He was telling his, like, J going check him out.
00:09:43
He might be the sleeper of the class because if you think about it, you were the lowest ranked player in that class.
00:09:51
So if you to come and do what you did, it took an insane amount of intestinal fortitude because right off the gate you were behind.
00:09:59
Everyone had a head started on you, like the rankings in terms of whatever.
00:10:03
But you came in.
00:10:04
You made up that gap very fast, obviously.
00:10:07
And you went you started.
00:10:09
You know, I think you start against the Florida State team.
00:10:11
You never obviously started every game after that.
00:10:15
Well, let's talk.
00:10:16
Let's let's go into what was your favorite absolute moment of the dome like being in a dome.
00:10:22
What was your what was that time when you think about dome, you say, man, I'm you know, that's that time that I'll never forget the dome for me.
00:10:29
Oh, shoes.
00:10:32
Yeah, Exactly.
00:10:33
Mouth, Yeah, that's a great question that we have any great times and then home, but one that definitely comes to mind, you know, right here there was.
00:10:48
There was There was definitely a big moments when we beat Kentucky.
00:10:51
Okay, You know, that was you know, I think they were, like, fourth in the country.
00:10:56
Yeah, at the time.
00:10:58
And, you know, a lot of people sleeping on us, you know, they knew we were nice team, but they was really sleeping on us.
00:11:03
And it was in the front of, like, 35.
00:11:05
36,000.
00:11:06
That was your junior year.
00:11:07
My sop****re year.
00:11:08
Yes, yes, yes.
00:11:09
And we ended up being Kentucky.
00:11:12
Man, that was That was a farm moment.
00:11:14
That was definitely a farm moment that, uh, that that I was remember, because it was so loud, man and then always playing Georgetown, you know, like, let's see, back in Georgetown, it was it was always good to be them on in Georgetown, man.
00:11:29
You know that serious? That was That was mandatory, Doug.
00:11:32
We had to be.
00:11:33
We had to be G town so I could talk **** when I went back home.
00:11:37
You already know that was that was bragging rights. Absolutely.
00:11:41
Yeah.
00:11:43
You know, we we you know, people that know you, we call you Lawrence Sam slo mo whatever What poetry is.
00:11:51
The name that stuff over the years, like your known is poetry.
00:11:55
And so can you give the people the listeners out there? Ah, dive into where the name comes from and and why do you have embraced this so much over the years? Absolutely, man.
00:12:07
Well, my freshman year, as you say, you know, uh, I end up, you know, playing really well.
00:12:13
And I remember we were playing.
00:12:16
I forget what team were playing, but I will never forget Dave Johnson, who was a senior at the time.
00:12:21
Dave Johnson come in the locker room J Dub.
00:12:24
And he said, Man, there's some bull****.
00:12:28
I don't been here four years and I ain't got this So I'm lacing up.
00:12:32
You know, everybody Look, you know, we all, you know, getting ready.
00:12:35
Other than a lot of women like Mo, he said, You need to go out there and see what they see what's going on.
00:12:40
You need to go out there like what you're talking about.
00:12:43
What's he talking about? Day.
00:12:45
He said, Man, you need to go out there.
00:12:46
So I laced up and, you know, walked under the tunnel as soon as I come under the tunnel out of the tunnel, man.
00:12:55
And I see that lance poetry and molten like section 3. 35.
00:13:01
And her name was married.
00:13:02
Love, may she rest in peace.
00:13:04
Older lady, man.
00:13:07
And she told me, You know, I ended up meeting her, and she ended up she and her Children.
00:13:12
She said she was a season ticket holder for 30 years, and by far I was I was her favorite.
00:13:19
Like she saw a lot, but I ended up being her, you know, her favorite man.
00:13:24
And, uh, yep, she ended up giving me, uh, giving me that name and ended up sticking, man, you know, it's crazy, you know? Uh, yeah, that's straight shoes.
00:13:35
And this lady was, like, 75.
00:13:37
She was like, 75 man, 75 years old.
00:13:41
Coming Thio Dome games, man.
00:13:47
You know, every so every time I walk out of the tunnel.
00:13:49
Now, that was my ritual.
00:13:50
I walked over to Section 3. 35 a beer.
00:13:53
Get them the peace sign and they give me the ball joint and I'm the time to get bug. It's okay.
00:14:01
No, no.
00:14:03
You know, when we play in the Big East.
00:14:05
It was absolutely the best conference in basketball.
00:14:07
It wasn't even close.
00:14:08
It was basically a proving ground for MBA talent in the Big East.
00:14:14
So we we played against numerous future N B A guys during our Big East time.
00:14:18
What would you say? It was your toughest competition in the Big East.
00:14:24
Toughest company, this player.
00:14:25
Toughest, toughest opponent.
00:14:26
Toughest players.
00:14:27
You win again.
00:14:28
Absolutely toughest player, I would say.
00:14:31
Ray Allen.
00:14:32
Ray Allen.
00:14:33
Jesus Shuttlesworth was tough.
00:14:35
Your movie partner, your movie partner.
00:14:41
You 1,000,000 screens, man.
00:14:47
Ray. Well, put that thing on the ground.
00:14:49
I was a lot of people sleeping back in the day.
00:14:51
Yeah, okay.
00:14:53
Put that thing on the ground and go.
00:14:56
And Kerry Kittles, my man kills.
00:14:57
I gotta get oodles of love was two of the toughest opponents where I really, you know, took the challenge.
00:15:04
And, uh, definitely no, I had to prove myself which I, which I was, was I was thankful.
00:15:11
I did.
00:15:12
Okay, Now let's talk about our team.
00:15:15
You know, you're not sure what's gonna happen with the basketball this year.
00:15:18
Hopefully, they ableto least have some A C C games or whatever they're kind of proposing for, you know, during this Covic situation.
00:15:27
But let's talk about our football team and we know you know, football is kind of like one of your first or second loves also, and you were arguably a better football player in high school at the time.
00:15:36
More let's say you're more recruited for football in high school than you work with the basketball.
00:15:42
From what I remember you're at, you know, you're on the lips of every major football teams recruiting services back then, and you made the right choice because you're one of all time greats and basketball, too.
00:15:55
But let's talk about the Syracuse to about because you're not both Watch the games.
00:15:59
How you feeling? Like what? What can we do? Different? How can we? What can you know? It's It's just it's been a really, really tough season.
00:16:06
This year has been a very tough season and it's been very difficult to watch these games, you know, I know what I know is we're dealing with the issue right now with the cove and what's going on.
00:16:24
But I just you know, I'm big on morale, you know, and it all starts from the top.
00:16:31
You know, I need a coach with a little bit more fire, you know, he's a good person. Okay.
00:16:37
Good person.
00:16:38
You know, I had nothing, uh, bad to say about me seeing that I got a chance to norm a Sfar, you know, one on one conversation, and he seems well around it.
00:16:49
But I'm, uh I need somebody that's a little bit more firing on.
00:16:54
And it's all about recruiting too, You know, My roommate, one of my roommates, you know, I was blessed to room with football guys.
00:17:03
Marvin Graves, my high school teammate, Alright.
00:17:07
And big I'll Wooten big.
00:17:09
I wouldn son was all American on, but he ended up going to mercy.
00:17:14
You know, he's playing football.
00:17:16
Mercer, We got George Rooks, who has two sons that handing pretty well.
00:17:22
Um, they're going a different kind.
00:17:25
One thing wants looking at Ohio State and somewhere else.
00:17:29
I think I heard Marvin Harrison son is going Ohio State.
00:17:32
Why receiving? So my whole point is these are all these guys I'm talking about the Syracuse guys.
00:17:38
That should be a no brainer.
00:17:39
You know, to be the first, uh, let us be she should be given out to those players because bleed orange, your father's played, so I'm big on that, you know, keeping it, keeping it that way, understanding that, you know, recruiting is very important, you know, And I just think good them.
00:18:02
We're not recruiting right now.
00:18:05
We touched on the Promise Zone and all that earlier.
00:18:08
But let's dig a little bit deeper.
00:18:09
Let's let's talk about all the change you've had to go through.
00:18:11
Like we're saying you're you're meeting the kids to zoom.
00:18:15
A lot of times, a lot of parents opted not to have their kids participate fully or whatever.
00:18:20
You know, we all understand everyone's got their own little, um, whatever reasons that they're holding their kids at home or not letting them, you know, go out into, you know, in this cove, it feel the world right.
00:18:32
Now let's talk about the Promise Zone and the schools you're working with and you know, on what you're doing to change the the community and Syracuse for the for the better.
00:18:42
Yeah, well, you know, just like I was all American and basketball, I feel like I'm all American and mentoring and teaching these youth down.
00:18:52
That's a That's a great mentality that have Lawrence is absolutely the right way to live in the right way to be so, And everything I'm doing is I'm giving them from my experience.
00:19:02
You know, I'm big on that, you know, and nobody's perfect.
00:19:06
We all make mistakes, but I'm teaching here.
00:19:09
There's one of us for this Promise Zone is one of us allocated every Syracuse City school district.
00:19:16
So we're here just to mentor the guys and girls and make sure they're doing the right thing and stand on track.
00:19:22
And, like you said, some of my are with lack of, uh, family members of parents.
00:19:27
So you gotta be apparent to him and and try toe still stealing them the right way to live and and the right people to be.
00:19:35
And and and that's what I'm about, You know, I got two beautiful girls, man. I'm blessed.
00:19:41
Both of my girls in college.
00:19:42
They're doing very well.
00:19:44
And I preach one thing.
00:19:46
And that's why my grandmother told me that was respect.
00:19:49
You know, I really feel like if you learn that one word, you know everything else, uh, take care of yourself and It's difficult for this, You know, this is new for everybody right now, so there's no right way, uh, to do this.
00:20:01
So to do that, you just gotta do it.
00:20:03
Be safe and do it the best way you can, but, um, as's faras thes kids, I really feel like there they're hurting in a sense of, you know, socialization, you know, And I and I look at, as far as, like, going even who's really hurting all the kid, the babies, you know, like they can't even go to daycare.
00:20:26
So that's the first part of socialization in their life. Now they can.
00:20:30
They stuck, you know, with the parent.
00:20:31
You know, they're still getting socialized but interacting with different Children and everything.
00:20:35
And you look at it.
00:20:37
We were already, uh, expanding away from socialization.
00:20:42
You could be at a restaurant, you and somebody else.
00:20:46
And both of you are looking at your cell phone instead of conversation.
00:20:50
No doubt, you know, that's that's that's what's lacking, you know, has been lacking.
00:20:53
So just try toe, hopefully pray for the best.
00:20:58
You know, today is a big day as we know you.
00:21:02
Noah's faras uh, what we're gonna do in this world, but at the same time, like my mother used to tell me, Uh, don't none stop still, I live, That's the truth.
00:21:12
And you talk about your daughters and I want to talk about your daughter's a little bit because, honestly, you know, you you and I have spoken over the years and you definitely helped me with in terms of raising my daughters and you know, different.
00:21:25
I love the way you raise your daughters and the way you've been so hands on with, um, The way you've always told them basically come to you with anything on thio, talk to him about anything and that.
00:21:36
So I try to do the same thing with my daughters.
00:21:38
Have you been an inspiration to me for my daughters? But let's talk about fatherhood and being a father as a young you know, young man.
00:21:46
And when it's tough, man and when you know it, Z not always ideal.
00:21:50
But you still got to make it work and make it happen.
00:21:53
Absolutely.
00:21:54
Definitely.
00:21:55
Gotta make it happen.
00:21:56
Uh, especially dealing with females, you know? You know, we have girls, you know, you have you blessed to have sons, too.
00:22:03
But you have way have girls.
00:22:06
So I tell people, you know, it's very important that we as fathers treat them the right way, give them the discipline and respect that they deserve and earn.
00:22:20
But, um, you know, I'm all about just having them understand that the way I treat them is the way I wanted to be treated.
00:22:33
You know, respect, kindness, you know, and just being good people.
00:22:37
And I love my girls, you know, like I said, they got their own business.
00:22:42
You know, the one of things I tell them to is, uh, you know, it's all about creating your own legacy.
00:22:47
You know, my daughter Leilani is working, you know, got a intern with JPMorgan and chase.
00:22:53
You know, they way you can't just say that and just just gloss over that Morgan and chase.
00:23:00
Yeah, a corner storms of our financial or the financing of this world you can't just gloss of.
00:23:08
That's a major.
00:23:09
That's a huge shout.
00:23:11
Shout out to her, Shout out the leilani mode, man.
00:23:14
Like I say, I get the text. You say Daddy.
00:23:17
So you know she still got two more years there.
00:23:20
The college, so they offer 80 early.
00:23:23
She might enter the draft early.
00:23:25
They offer the 80 grand.
00:23:27
She says she's going back to the table.
00:23:29
Daddy, by the time I get out, it should be to 50.
00:23:32
That's what she s So you know, man, I'm just blessed, you know? You know, and the rest of, you know, doing her thing with her commentator and everything just did Overseas elite camp where she was traveling from place.
00:23:47
The place, uh, interviewing, interviewing futures, you know, hopefully incoming stars as far as overseas or just playing professionally, so they create their own legacy.
00:23:57
Dove, you know you'll be you'll definitely appreciative of your nieces, man.
00:24:02
Your family shout out to you, man, that's that's incredible.
00:24:05
That means you raise them, right? That's that's very, very incredible, man.
00:24:10
Shout out toe thio, both of your daughter Lorenza in Leilani.
00:24:13
Now let's touch on.
00:24:16
You know, we we both are kind of heavy up here in the community.
00:24:18
We've been doing things in the Syracuse community for the youth for years, trying to help out just trying to get back.
00:24:25
It's like a cliche.
00:24:27
Everyone is like, you know, you're giving back, but you are truly, truly giving back hands on your urine.
00:24:34
It every day.
00:24:35
You're helping kids every day you're in the system.
00:24:38
You're in the throes of your your in the midst of it.
00:24:41
Can you take us into why you felt it was so important for you to come back up to Syracuse and and and give this guidance to the to the youth up here in the 315? Yeah, well, you know, things happen the way they happened.
00:24:57
You Noah's faras me moving back here.
00:24:59
You know, I do understand that God makes no mistakes.
00:25:03
I'm big on that, you know? And I knew when I came here, nothing but good things could happen.
00:25:09
You know, I was going deep into it, like I said, getting my degree in education and already knowing people that in the Syracuse community and Syracuse system that they knew that I could help, you know, in my way.
00:25:23
And that's teaching and meant on and and, uh, giving nothing but positivity.
00:25:29
You know, it's so much negative going on with these, you see and hear so much that they don't even take.
00:25:35
He took the positive stuff, You know.
00:25:38
You know, you gotta give him some positivity, too.
00:25:40
So, you know, all I give them is things you know, that I've been through from my experience, you know, I come from the hood to, you know, I've been to the suburbs to, you know, I've been the skinny outlets, too.
00:25:52
So, you know, I've been blessed toe, uh, walk all aspects of life, and I understand that, you know, First of all, you gotta be respectable, uh, to yourself, a second of all respect the people that you around and take in what you want to take in and throw away that you wanna throw away, you know, try to stay around positive people.
00:26:15
You know, I'm big on that, you know, and I'm here.
00:26:20
I know.
00:26:21
I'm here for a reason.
00:26:22
You know, I also felt that one of my reasons to come to Syracuse is, uh, maybe help out a t university.
00:26:29
Also, because that could use some assistance ways and and hopefully, uh, you know, they take heed to seeing what I'm doing on the community side in the city side and understand that I can also help up on the university if you need my assistance.
00:26:49
No, that's what's up, man.
00:26:50
And shout out to yourself.
00:26:52
Sometimes I give yourself a pat on the back, man, because you are doing a great job.
00:26:56
You are really, really, really influencing Syracuse youth in the most positive way that imaginable.
00:27:03

00:27:13
You're definitely a good person, man.
00:27:16
Like I said, you're gonna tell it like it is.
00:27:18
You're gonna have some good messages for for the youth, and I'll be definitely tuning in myself.
