It's time to have a conversation about Brandon Ingram, one of the league's brightest stars.
Right now, he's making a name for himself, and he's done it again tonight with what should have been the game winner over the Utah Jazz stop their 10 game winning streak.
It has the Pelicans rolling.
I believe that one 11 on 14 could be off by a game or two, but somewhere in that arena of 11 of 14 or 10 of 13 games, which has them, UH, relatively close to playoff race.
But the crazy thing is about Brandon Ingram that he has done this with the adversity he's faced.
Let's not forget that has been less than a year since.
You don't want potential career altering, career ending blood clocks.
That's scary for anybody and ended boss.
His career ended.
He couldn't come.
I mean, it was very dangerous friend to come back and play.
Luckily for Brandon Ingram, not only has you returned, but he's been balling.
He's taken advantage of this second chance.
If you want to call it that, that basketball and he's just run with it.
The Lakers shipped him off course in that Anthony Davis steal.
He hasn't looked back, guys, he really hasn't looked back.
So what you're going to see on Twitter what you're going to see across social media? Is people hyping him up looking at his points per game, looking at rebounds, assistance.
The typical average box score, right? The surface stats, if you will.
But I'm here to give you a different spin on what he has done so far this season.
So let's look at a few other category, shall we? Usage usage right now is about 29.2%.
That's in the 97th percentile for his position.
Small forward, weighing forward would even want to call it.
That's pretty nice.
That's not quite Westbrook hard and levels, but it's pretty freaking high.
That's not far off of Donovan Mitchell.
What we know how many offensive possessions Donna Mitchell has dominated.
Not this just this season, but its entire career, because the Jazz have been in desperate need of a creator, somebody to pump in some extra offense to that team.
Also, a few other things to look at here points per shot attempt.
So this is total points scored per 100 shot attempts his first season.
10 percentile, second season, 43rd 3rd season, 63rd percentile.
This using 84th.
So he's rising in that category as well.
3% on assist percentage.
92nd percentile for his position.
Where was you last year? 69.
So this is just not.
This isn't just a guy that's looking for his own shot every time.
This is not a ball dominant guide has his head down.
He's not looking for other guys in this team to make plates because this is a deep team, and this is a team of young and a lot of young players looking for an opportunity to prove themselves So it would completely submarine this team in the mentality of everybody around him.
If he were to just dominate possessions without letting other guys have their share as well.
He's assuming a large lion share of the offensive responsibility because he has to.
This team has nerves.
I on this team has been lacking drew holidays production for quite some time.
He's missed several games this season.
Uh, Derrick Favors just missed several games and other guys have been banged up.
So who's left? Brennan Ingram, offensive extraordinaire.
Shot creator of Finisher, was shot.
You know, big game clincher, Whatever name you want, a place on him.
He's been doing it all for this team, and it's assist percentage shows us how willing he is to be a playmaker.
So for me, that's a positive sign that one's on returns, which will be pretty soon.
Ah, January 22nd against the San Antonio Spurs, guys.
So we're less than a week away from that.
But that shows me, and it reassures me that he's not gonna be a guy that is just gonna fall off a cliff when Sun comes spect.
I think that Zion's role is gonna be slow to start up.
He's gonna potentially come off the bench.
I wouldn't give any any more than 15 18 minutes a game to start because brain is playing so well.
This team is playing so well.
You don't want to just throw him back in and having just dominate possessions and throughout the other guy's rhythm and make them question what they've been doing to this point in the season.
You want to bring him alone slowly.
You want to let his condition and get to a point where it actually allows him to play 20 plus minutes a game without becoming extremely fatigued.
So for Brendan in Rome, he can still have his cake.
He can still have his opportunities, but maybe dish a little bit of extra sauce here, and they're designing these other guys to keep them involved.
So that's a very positive sign, too.
Uh, you look a guy like Donald Mitchell.
Um, I'll look it up real here real quick just so we can get an idea.
But, um, I think he's been a little bit lower on the totem pole.
He's been better this season, though, when it comes to assist getting guys involved.
Ah, he's at about 2122% assist percentage.
So compared to Brendan in Rome, that's actually pretty close.
That's really comparable.
It's just different for Donovan.
Mitchell is a guard because you expect him to distribute a little bit more than a forward would.
So I think I don't think it's necessarily a bad sign for Bread.
For Mitchell, that is the same point is branded ego when it comes to assist percentage because Brennan Negro is doing so much for this team, and Mitchell is definitely making some progress on that.
So that's not a slight hunt out of the Mitchell.
This is, Ah, a very good sign for Brandon Ingram because he is looking for other guys and getting in the vault.
So the brother in the context, we also have to look at assists.
Let's see what it's called here assists, usage ratio.
So basically what that does, it puts his assist percentage into perspective so we can see exactly how much he's distributing relative to its usage.
Right, because it would be easy.
Course I want to post a good assist percentage, but if we're using extraordinary amount of your team's possessions, then you can kind of it kind of nullifies or our dumbs down that affected your play making.
So for Brandon Ingram, right here, 0.
69 assists to usage ratio, which puts him in the 74th percentile.
So what that shows us is that even though he has a high usage, he's still distributing at a rate that is just not that like he's having this many.
He's dominating this many possessions and it's only assisting on this many compared to his uses.
That pretty close, um, 74th percentile like I mentioned before, so very positive signs for Brandon Ingram.
I just wanted to put a different spin on his improvements here because we know he's scoring and above a career rate.
He scored 49 points tonight.
He's in the top 10 in scoring in the entire league.
Everybody's notes that everybody's been reporting that, Ah, assists per game. We know that.
But assist percentage usage points for shot attempt, thes air, all things that should be covered more often.
I think we can get a deeper appreciation for the improvements that Brandon Ingram has made in this game.
Of course, we can look at ah, how he's shooting from other ends of the floor to do.
We can get it also, get a pretty good idea.
How is producing there? So at the rim this season, he is struggling a little bit there, but overall his effective vehicle percentage is at a career high of 54.5%.
Why is that Because this three point percentage is at a career high.
So in case you didn't know 50 physical percentage, adjust for the extra point attained from three pointers.
So if you shoot a high percentage from three, that could definitely boost your offensive field goal percentage.
So what's he shooting from? Three? Glad you asked.
So for this season right now, you go back over all shooting.
I I was actually kind of shocked to see that I thought he was at 40% but 41% after seeing 33 last season, and 30% is rookie year.
It's an amazing, amazing improvement.
Um, this money could be more shocking.
The hold on for this 86% at the free throw line after shooting 67% last season, 19% increase in one season.
My God, I mean, that is a fantastic improvement and development for Brendan Ingo.
Hey had shot in the sixties all three years before this, and he jumps to 86.
That's gotta be the top 20 in the entire league, guys, and that's almost tough.
So kudos to Brandon Ingram.
He's clearly spent a lot of time in the gym getting his shot to a place where people cannot dunk under screens.
You have to respect him you have to step over those screens and it gives him Elaine JJ, the rim and an avenue for him to use his extraordinary length and reach to be able to get to the rim and be crafty and finish in there.
It's not manifesting itself right now quite as much at the rim.
Like I said, you know, But right now it's not making a difference.
He's still getting what he wants from everywhere else in the floor free throw line three point line, mid range.
It is all coming together for him 41% in the long mid 45% in the short mid 43% alm it all in the seventies.
A SZ faras percentile goes, So he's he's doing his part from onto the floor at the room is just a little bit a little bit shaky right now, Frequency.
Why not? Let's look a percentage of shot attempts.
So at the rim, he doesn't take a ton of percentage of shots at the rim.
Ah, he likes to get a lot from the mid range.
Attempts are from long mid, and if we look at all mid he's at 37% of his shots are from the mid range, definitely higher up there.
Mid range isn't a terrible thing, guys.
If you're a good shooter from that range, why not go to a place in the floor, continue to get shots up where you feel you're comfortable and where you're efficient? That's all that matters.
Efficiency over everything.
You're shooting 20% yet.
I'll shoot those shots.
But if you're shooting whatever you know, a TTE this point above average, why not get into a place on the floor? We're gonna put points up seven or eight times out of 10 right? That makes sense.
The math adds up.
So kudos to Brandon Ingram.
He's been huge tries this season, not just in scoring, but passing.
Uh, so I mean, this is the guy that at 22 years old, he's gonna be a perennial all star for a long time.
If things continue on this trajectory speaking all star guys, should he make the all Star team? If you have any thoughts, throw them down below a TTE this point, I'm starting to get to a point where I am gonna put it in the All Star Game when I do make my final picks.
Uh, for a while I was on the fence, but it seems like every game he's getting better and more confident.
And it's getting harder and harder for me to overlook that you have other guys, that shaky cases. Westbrook.
He's always gonna have the counting stats, but his shooting is terrible again.
And you know, the stats that were so gaudy before definitely down this season, you look a cat cat has missed a ton of games, so his cases also hurt by that.
Ah, you know, across the there's a lot of guys that have a case right, but it's it's tough to take him out.
Mean Booker Bad team again.
Yada, yada, yada.
That's also gonna hurt him.
So I mean, Brandon, you know his team is not They're turning up, right? They're not gonna win.
They're not winning a ton.
I mean, they're winning 10 or 11 out of last 14 games, so they're probably still gonna end up close to the playoff Flint if not in the playoffs.
They just had a slow start, so I don't hold that against him.
Had his good of a stretches any team has had in the association over the past three weeks. Four weeks.
So, um, I think I'm gonna put him in the game.
How about you guys? Curious? So that's Brandon's case.
What about New Orleans? Most look at them for a second, just for a few minutes.
So for this season, overall their 20th and offensive rating at 25th in defense of rating.
And that's heavily skewed by the way they started this season.
They're 15 and 26 right now.
13th in the Western Conference.
They started awful.
I don't remember what their bottom was, but I mean, they're in the single digits and winds 33 and 10 or something like that.
It was just It was really bad, but they've crawled back to a place where the respectable they knocked off Utah.
That's a huge feet.
Utah has lost in 10 games, guys.
10 game it took.
It took a while for her to take this loss, and Utah still almost grabbed this game, so the pelicans have gotten back on track.
Brandon is a huge part of that zone, of course, hasn't been here.
Missile outside, too.
So um, you're looking at their recent schedule.
They're bottom point was six and 22 whole.
There were six and 22 guys.
Golden State Warriors.
They've come a long way.
So for the New Orleans pelicans, I'm looking at the recent play, um, three wins.
I see three wins in the last four games.
They dropped one in between to Boston, but yeah, I mean, they're on an upward swing, Guys, This pelican's team, they're the biggest challenge this season.
Is finding enough minutes for all those great players the same issues that the Nuggets have faced not just this season, but the past two years.
And you have so many players that could contribute, uh, starters, bench players.
Whatever the case may be, it's hard to find minutes, and it's hard to keep everybody happy.
You have young players, you have vets.
That was Alvin Gentry's biggest challenge, and it's not getting any easier because Ion is on the horizon.
He will be back, and I think two games or so, so another challenge for him.
But I think he's gonna be just fine.
Some guys have had to take the fall here.
Some guys have had to kind of fall the rotation to make room Alexander Walker's fall another rotation here.
I think before tonight he wasn't getting a lot of run.
Kendrick Williams? Probably not.
Um so I mean, it's been tough for some of these guys on this team because they're not getting the kind of run they're used to.
But overall, the guys that are expected to make an impact are doing what they need to do.
So I just looked an injury report here.
This is crazy there.
Injury report Right now.
Derrick favors day to day Drew Hadi out.
Brendan Ingram was day to day, but he ended up playing tonight after missing the last game against the Pistons with a knee injury.
Darius Miller Ah, tours the Keeley's.
So he's been out the whole season.
Okay, Affords Day today, J.
J. Red**** State. Today.
Kendrick Williams was out, so he didn't really play today and Zions been out, of course, since the beginning of the season.
So lots of injuries guys, but it's also it's kind of been a blessing in disguise.
Was like I said, you have so many guys that wanna play need to play.
This had been missing time that's open the doors for some of those other people that were otherwise going to see any time to get into rotation.
So it has been a challenge for Alvin Gentry to get a solid rotation consistent because so many guys would want this door.
I can't imagine if there everybody was healthy.
I don't know how anybody would get more than 20 minutes a game unless you're starting.
Right? Unless you're Brandon Ingram or Drew holiday, you know, it would be insane.
Uh, before I wrap this up, guys, we're getting to them this broadcast here tonight.
Ah, Lonzo Ball is another guy who we need to talk about What needs to get some respect put on his name.
Uh, one of the more well rounded guards we have in this league.
Uh, this season, he's averaging 12 5 at six.
35% shooting with that hideous form that he had last years.
And that's a huge development for him.
He's just gonna walk in the free throw percentage.
51% is not gonna cut it, but any stretch the imagination.
But Lonzo has been balling as of late.
Ah, he's been another reason why pelicans have made a surge here.
Uh, interesting thing, though.
This has come without your holiday.
Remember, he's hurt.
So I saw a piece by I think it was Jonathan.
She teach sharks on the ringer earlier this season and a lot of, um, interesting numbers from when Holiday and Ball shared the court.
It wasn't pretty, wasn't good.
But when one was on the court without the other, things were looking up.
And that's what we're seeing here.
So I'm going back to, let's just say, seven games.
Eight games, so 34% from 3 44% from the field and 17 points per game.
Eight assists, seven boards.
So whatever you need from Lonzo Ball, he's got accept free throw shooting.
Don't ask him to hit free throws in the clutch, because that probably won't happen.
But everything else he's got it.
And unlike Ben Simmons and other players like that, Sorry, guys in the you know about trying take shots here.
He's running to shoot threes.
He's shooting 7.
62 game and he's hitting them at a good rate.
34% 35 in the season.
That's league average. You could take that all day.
So good is for Brandon Ingram.
He's playing 36 almost 37 minutes a game because he has to, because Holiday's men out and the rotation is a little bit thin, which is crazy, considering all the great players they had to start this season.
So good stuff with Brandon and grow good stuff from ball in great stuff from New Orleans pelicans who are reborn and working the way up back, working the way back up the Western Conference standings.
So keep her eye on New Orleans.
Tune in at every opportunity because now we have Zayat.
Now we have Brennan, Negro don't know how long out, and they're pretty healthy.
That's a fun matchup.
I believe they have a fun game coming up the Saturday uh against ah, who was? I think it's Saturday prime time as well.
The Clippers believes the Clippers So, um, strapped in get ready for that matchup.
That's gonna be a lot of fun.
Bread and ego versus Kawai, baby.
Paul! George, he's back.
I'm here for I'm here for all day.
So, um I have been high on Brandon for a while, and tonight was no different.
Kind of reassured me that.
Ah, you know, I was right to not give up on him.
And everybody else that was on his bandwagon didn't jump off when it got kind of dicey there.
Ah, he just needed new opportunity.
Um, I'll in this broadcast on a tweet that I had from February 2nd of last year.
Um, I mentioned that he had a very nice game in the sound kind of crazy at the time, but I still believed that he was going to be a great player long term.
And that's what it's looking like, guys.
So it is nice when you don't give up on a guy who proves you right? You know, such a great thing.
So that's about it for tonight.
Next, we're going to my broadcast.
Um, gonna be back.
I'm sure with more ****ysis of the pelicans that they keep this up because you can't help but not talk about them, right? That the Grizzlies, the thunder great stories require.
Um, let me say this.
Great stories require ah of the due amount of attention.
They require us to get on board and recognize what they're doing and give them their due because it burned it.
That's not like I'll start rambling.
So have a good night, guys.
Uh, excited to see what other tricks the pelicans have up their sleeve.
This should be a fun one.
Fund season has to continue to progress.
So So next time.
