00:00:00
Hey, everyone, this is the first ever.
00:00:03
Troy Nunes is an absolute magician.
00:00:06
Sportscaster Recap wanted to start everything off by talking about Syracuse football s Oh, yeah, Always a really positive subject that went really well on Friday night.
00:00:18
Full sarcasm intended as Thesiger accuse Orange lost panthers.
00:00:23
Ah, the orange are still looking for three wins to get back to bowling and pit was probably one of their best chance is to pick up a win here on out.
00:00:33
Um, so I know that Nunes magician has been covering the aftermath of the pit game.
00:00:41
There's a usual three takeaways that we have upon the site immediately after the game.
00:00:46
You've got a regular recap, and then John Castillo wrote our larger thing Peace Take away that recently went up.
00:00:56
And it basically is a great look at, um what the mindset of the fan bases right now, which is less than ideal eso Let's kind of break this down in a bunch of different ways.
00:01:10
The first thing that I'm gonna hit on is one of the key pieces that John Kind talked about in his his piece on.
00:01:17
That's right.
00:01:18
Now that I don't think we can put the blame on any one person right now or anyone. Unit.
00:01:24
I think Syracuse really is the culmination of a lot of things going wrong.
00:01:29
First and foremost, it's the offensive line play.
00:01:32
It's been terrible.
00:01:33
We've kind of discuss that at nauseam.
00:01:37
Steve Howard had a great recap a few weeks ago about some of the issues, some of the communication issues that the line was having.
00:01:43
Um, really, there's a few players that you can highlight on the interior of the line.
00:01:48
They're there because of injuries.
00:01:51
It's It's not the line that Syracuse ideally wants to be running with, and as a result, it's greatly impacting what they could do on offense, which as a whole has been pretty terrible this year by Dino Babers.
00:02:03
The standards.
00:02:04
This is easily probably going to be the worst offense that Dino Babers has had any stop along this way.
00:02:09
Um, this will probably be the worst.
00:02:11
He's has a head coach.
00:02:13
However, the defense has something optimistic toe look at.
00:02:17
It's been better than expected, however.
00:02:19
There's a very clear weakness, which is to go over the middle of the field, attack the linebackers on when you're giving teams in the A C C that obvious of a hole to exploit their going to, and it's going to end pretty poorly.
00:02:32
So there's a lot of people who want to blame the coaching staff on this.
00:02:36
There's a lot of people who want to play the players.
00:02:39
And John, you know, says that there's plenty of blame to go around to those areas.
00:02:43
I think we really do have to look at on Dino Babers making some changes this offseason.
00:02:48
I don't know if Michael Lynch is going to looses offensive coordinator abilities, but I do think we're kind of realizing how big of an influence Shawn Lewis had on the offensive play calling and strategy on.
00:02:58
And I think that there's a reason that Shawn Lewis ah was hired to be a head coach even though it wasn't the Mac, even though it is that one of the toughest jobs in the Mac, arguably Akron.
00:03:10
This is not an easy job, even by Max standards.
00:03:15
It's it's very difficult to win there and Lewis was basically young enough to think that he could make a difference there.
00:03:23
But so far there's there's been some improvement.
00:03:25
There's there have been signs of success that Shawn Lewis knows what he's doing is the head coach, which means that as a coordinator, he was probably a really big piece to Dino varies a success along the way.
00:03:35
Losing him is going to be something that Syracuse will have to deal with from here on out.
00:03:40
It's not great, but it's reality.
00:03:43
So if we continue to move off of the coaching staff, though, we do kind of have to realize that I think some expectations were misaligned.
00:03:53
I don't know if anybody follows me on Twitter at a c P r e g l e r E c Regular.
00:03:59
Um, I kind of unloaded a lot of thoughts that I had, and I choose to look at football through a very analytical lens when it comes to analysis, I love watching the game, and in the moment of watching, I'm very emotional.
00:04:11
But when you take a 10,000 step view back of this like the numbers typically end up being right more often than not if you're looking at the right numbers and so my preferred metric of evaluating football teams is SP plus used to be s and P plus developed by Bill Connelly, now at ESPN.
00:04:29
And the reason I like S P plus is because it is a predictive tool.
00:04:34
It's not looking at what you've done and evaluating what you've done in a vacuum.
00:04:38
It's looking at what you've done versus who you've done it against and therefore what future performance could be extrapolated from that.
00:04:46
And because of this ends up being a little bit more accurate when it comes to actually predicting on field results.
00:04:52
Therefore, I like it a lot because I feel like that's more accurate towards what we fans want.
00:04:57
An analysis for football team when we're looking at numbers.
00:05:00
And so one of the big points that I hit home that seems to have resonated with a lot of people has been the evaluation of the program under Dino Babers, relative to SP, plus his 1st 3 years.
00:05:14
There's 1st 2 years of Syracuse.
00:05:15
Syracuse was foreign eight and then your three.
00:05:17
We have that miraculous 10 win season, but Syracuse finished the season ranked in the top 25 but was 40th and SP plus.
00:05:26
Obviously that kind of shows from a very surface level that s P plus thought that Syracuse overachieved a bit, and I think that's accurate.
00:05:33
I think when we look at the factors that led to Syracuse being successful last year, they weren't repeatable.
00:05:39
Long term, you're not going to continually have the amazing turnover luck that Syracuse hat and this season they're not getting the same number of turnovers.
00:05:46
Therefore, we're not seeing the same level of success.
00:05:48
Special teams This year has been really good.
00:05:51
Last year, Syracuse to special teams were one of the best in the country.
00:05:55
You know, losing that field position battle when you've got an offense that struggling as much, you know, you switch special teams switch last year, special teams to this year.
00:06:04
Maybe it does help Syracuse get that fourth win somewhere, along with whether it's NC State or pit.
00:06:09
But you know, last year maybe they don't win 10 they only win nine.
00:06:13
I don't necessarily haven't done into the numbers that much to say, but I do think that special teams taking a slight step back has impacted this year's performance and so finally I think again S p plus is predictive.
00:06:26
It's not necessarily evaluative.
00:06:28
So when we talk about predictive measures.
00:06:31
City S and P plus arrest.
00:06:33
People US last year.
00:06:34
Basically Sandwich Syracuse between Vanderbilt at 39 Oregon at 41.
00:06:39
We look at the teams this year, and Vanderbilt took a massive step back.
00:06:42
They're not super great in the SEC, obviously much different, much more difficult conference.
00:06:47
Meanwhile, Organ is doing significantly better than one of the better teams in the country.
00:06:52
They should be the favorites to win the Pac 12 this year.
00:06:55
And so you look at which team Syracuse Profile's better against.
00:07:00
And they definitely looked a lot more like Vanderbilt Coming into this offseason.
00:07:04
We're losing a lot of senior talent.
00:07:06
You know they're returning the returning talent and skill positions, a certain spots along the defense.
00:07:12
But when it comes down to it, you have to replace a senior quarterback.
00:07:15
You have to replace pieces along the offensive line and you have to replace a lot of seniors.
00:07:19
There's going to be ah, lot of regression, and we're seeing that regression with Syracuse right now and it's it's painful.
00:07:28
It hurts.
00:07:29
There probably should have been a better evaluative process by everybody involved.
00:07:33
Realizing that losing Eric Dungy was going to be painful.
00:07:36
There should have been a much better job by, I think, a lot of people controlling the idea that DeVito was going to come in and immediately be the best quarterback that Syracuse has ever seen.
00:07:47
Or the best Syracuse that you know babies has ever had, because in reality, we're looking at a quarterback getting his first starting job in college after not starting for three years since high school, like there's going to be some kind of a drop off in some kind of adjustment needed.
00:08:02
This is college.
00:08:03
You only get so many hours of practice even in the off season.
00:08:06
So there's going to be a natural learning curve.
00:08:09
Um, and overall, I think that this whole mess is kind of created the cult fan culture that we have right now, where there are some people who I don't necessarily agree with, who are thinking that Dino Babers might not have been the right fit.
00:08:24
There are some people saying that this whole system, this whole offense, this whole thing that Dino brings is all just a giant gimmick on dhe.
00:08:31
That's really what I kind of want to address from here is that I don't think Syracuse is going to get better this year.
00:08:37
I think that realistically, there are two games left on the schedule that offer any kind of hope for a win that's on the road against Duke.
00:08:46
Because Duke has shown to be wildly inconsistent at home, field advantage doesn't really apply to them.
00:08:51
So anything could happen in that game.
00:08:54
And, uh, home against Boston College forever.
00:08:57
You know, you feel really good about the B C game going into it and then but Boston College destroys NC State, a team that defeated Syracuse.
00:09:05
So all in all, you're kind of left with the rest of the way.
00:09:09
The rest of the national media has evaluated the SEC, you know, hands in the air and just saying, You know, it varies week to week.
00:09:15
And right now one of the only Constance is that Syracuse is probably the bottom of the A C. C.
00:09:20
So when you're staring at five wings for Syracuse, a huge drop off from last year and overall missing a bull, which is the goal for this program every year you kind of want to start looking at how to fix it and I don't think the way to fix it is to get rid of Dino Babers.
00:09:36
I don't think the way to fix it is to move on from Tommy DeVito as the starting quarterback.
00:09:41
That being said, I do think that there are other things that can be done.
00:09:46
I think that we're going to look at Cavanaugh being released from his offensive line coaching duties.
00:09:51
I think that's an easy win for Dino to sell.
00:09:53
It's an easy win for the program to sell.
00:09:55
Basically, say, Listen, we know what the biggest issue is.
00:09:57
We're making a wholesale change there.
00:09:59
I do think that something will happen to the offensive coaching staff don't know what it will be.
00:10:04
That will have to be a question answered in the off season.
00:10:08
But I don't think he knows when to stand pat.
00:10:10
But looking more towards this year, what's going to change this year? I do think that well, she's going to be given a longer leash at quarterback.
00:10:21
I would not be surprised if he starts next week for Syracuse.
00:10:24
This is not what I'm about to say.
00:10:26
Next is a very speculative statement.
00:10:28
It's not backed up by any reports.
00:10:30
It's just backed off of what I've seen watching the game, watching Tommy to be no play.
00:10:35
But I do think that Tommy DeVito was still hurt the way that he's so instinctively protecting himself the way that his move ability has been challenged the last few weeks.
00:10:44
Each he's just not looking like the same quarterback that played against Western Michigan, where the moment that the pocket collapsed, he was ready to run, put the shoulder down and run very similarly.
00:10:54
Like what we used to sing with Eric Dungy this the last few weeks, he's been much more protective of himself, and I do think that there is some kind of longer term injury that might not have prevented him from suiting up in playing if we had a healthy offensive line.
00:11:10
But at this point, I think it's best to let him heal 100% and regain some of his confidence.
00:11:17
Now, Um, from the standpoint of Welsh at quarterback, I think that having a runner as a quarterback is the best case scenario for Syracuse right now.
00:11:30
Um, I think we saw in the second half of that pit game what can happen when the defense has to respect the run is that right now the recipe for beating Syracuse is send pressure, be aggressive, get into the backfield because it will be able to get to the back field.
00:11:43
Being able to force defense is to at least spy some other linebackers or spy some of their rushers so that the offensive line, instead of dealing with an overlord or dealing with, you know, 55 blitzers, hold one of those guys back.
00:11:58
I think that's probably best for the offense moving forward.
00:12:02
And I also think it's best for the offense in getting mo needles and dual Adam's more involved and, to an extent, Jarvi on Howard.
00:12:10
The running backs have been the most consistent part of the offense this year.
00:12:14
They've not been the best.
00:12:15
I think that award goes to Tricia Jackson, who, when targeted when, given the opportunity, has been electric and is a game breaker for the Orange.
00:12:24
The running backs, though, are the ones that are constantly available on check downs.
00:12:29
They're the ones that are available to at least make something happen and get three yards at a time.
00:12:36
It's not been pretty.
00:12:37
It's not been great.
00:12:38
But now that you've got a dual threat quarterback, I wouldn't be surprised to see some Maur R P O Action come into play on a more consistent basis.
00:12:46
I think if you run, I don't think Syracuse is going to all of a sudden bust out a triple option look anytime soon.
00:12:53
But I do think that running some kind of spread option, where Syracuse can consistently look to run the ball from both the quarterback and the running back spot is probably the best solution for this offense.
00:13:05
Moving forward.
00:13:06
They're obviously not going to be able to pass. Protect.
00:13:08
Their defense is very clearly know that if you cram the middle of the field and the Welch has not been able to make those long throws to the sidelines, he wasn't able to do it against Pitt.
00:13:20
I don't think he's going to be able to do it a long term unless there's some significant changes to how he trains and practices.
00:13:27
I think at this point you're looking at a Syracuse offense that's going to rely on the run specifically through some kind of quarterback option looks.
00:13:33
I don't think that's the worst thing in the world.
00:13:35
It's not like the SEC has any defense is that Syracuse will face moving forward that are lighting the world on fire, ready to do something super original in order to defeat them? Um, that's obviously the biggest remaining question for Syracuse.
00:13:50
When it comes to this season, what does the quarterback position look like? I also think moving forward.
00:13:55
We should start to see some more players get some looks.
00:14:00
Dino Babers.
00:14:01
I don't know the exact quote, but I retweeted it from either syracuse dot com on the daily Orange.
00:14:06
On short, which one it was.
00:14:08
Dino Babers explicitly said in his press and post game press conference that just because you've started, you know, up until this point does not mean that you're guaranteed games from here on out.
00:14:19
Nothing's been good enough.
00:14:20
Nobody's played well enough to to guarantee their spot.
00:14:24
So I think we could start seeing some fresh linens and sophomores who came in there a little bit more highly touted.
00:14:31
Their part of these slightly better recruiting classes that Syracuse has been bringing in, I think you could start to see them get some action.
00:14:38
Keeley are keen.
00:14:40
I'm looking at the line backing group.
00:14:42
I think that Mikhail Jones is probably more than likely to start getting some more consistent.
00:14:49
Reps. Leap.
00:14:50
Baba is somebody who came in with Jones.
00:14:53
I don't know if he's necessarily better right now and the guys they have.
00:14:56
But if you're playing to the future, get these young kids wraps.
00:14:59
So that way Next season, they hit the floor running, and there's none of this inexperience of the linebacker group.
00:15:05
We're going to lose a lot of our returning defensive or we're gonna lose a lot of our current defensive production next year.
00:15:14
Alden Robinson is going to go to the NFL.
00:15:15
He's going to be a first.
00:15:16
He's gonna be a day one pick.
00:15:18
We're going to lose Kendall Coleman.
00:15:20
Tremendous player has really benefited and helped.
00:15:23
Syracuse has pass rush this year, So if you know that you're not going to have these guys next year, what young defensive end prospects are we looking at, who on the team is impressed enough to maybe get some snaps and get some opportunities to start proving themselves? I'm not saying that Old Man and Coleman are going to all the sudden be benched in favor of younger players.
00:15:46
But I do think that at this point we could start to see more decisions made with an eye to the future than an eye for making a bowl this year.
00:15:55
And that's just the reality of the talent level that Syracuse has shown so far.
00:15:59
So this is all really interesting.
00:16:01
It's all very speculative at this point on and that's really all Syracuse conduce moving forward.
00:16:06
Things aren't looking great.
00:16:08
They're still reasons to be optimistic about this team.
00:16:11
They're still relatively young.
00:16:12
There's still a lot of growth that can happen.
00:16:15
But overall I'm not going to tell fans that they shouldn't be upset with the way the team has performed.
00:16:22
It has been disappointing on a lot of fronts.
00:16:24
It's been disappointing with the bare minimum expectations.
00:16:27
Being a bowl game.
00:16:28
It's been really disappointing if you maybe bought into the, you know, 10 win hype being repeatable.
00:16:34
I think the biggest thing to take away from this whole weekend is that Syracuse is not a top tier A CC program.
00:16:42
Last year season was not a signaling of things to come.
00:16:46
I think it was more proof of concept that when a Dino Babers team has veteran talent.
00:16:53
When a Dino Babers team has players who know how to execute his system, they can take advantage of teams that either A aren't playing up to their potential.
00:17:04
Looking at the floor state game specifically or like the rest of the schedule, kind of bared out that if the teams are man two, so so, uh, Sarah Dino Babers and Syracuse could beat a lot of teams straight up, Um, that being said, you know, they still lost the claims and they still lost to pit.
00:17:24
Those were games that were shown that Syracuse team last year was unnecessarily elite but Syracuse.
00:17:32
His team was good enough to hang in those games and make them one possession games.
00:17:37
These are things that I think a lot of fans wanted to write off and say, Oh, while Syracuse was just as good as these teams when in reality, I think the answer was that Syracuse was a knock below them.
00:17:49
It was just everybody else in the A C C.
00:17:51
Who wasn't as good, and Syracuse took advantage.
00:17:53
So we do have a question here.
00:17:55
Should Dino Babers have re jiggered the offense for Tommy rather than having him step in the system that works so well for Eric.
00:18:01
I think that is an excellent question, and I think that is something that I would love to talk to.
00:18:07
Mike Lynch more about.
00:18:08
Dino is very cagey about his staff talking to the media, so we probably won't get a lot of answers on this towards the end of the season.
00:18:14
But I do think right now there is a conflict going on with Syracuse's offense.
00:18:20
It's that right now the players are very usedto one style.
00:18:24
The team is very used to one style that is relatively opposed to a Dino Babers wants to run.
00:18:30
Tommy is the example of the type of system that Dino Babers wants to run three steps and the balls out of his hands occasionally go from the deep ball.
00:18:40
Have a quarterback that can be occasionally mobile to keep defense is honest when in reality, the team and the system is still adapting from the quarterback who is the center of attention who can make plays with his arm, make plays with his legs and ultimately everything ebbs and flows with the quarterback while with Dino Babers is ideal system.
00:19:03
Everything ebbs and flows from the entire 11 players on the field working as a unit.
00:19:09
I don't know if there was a whole lot that could have been done with the time frame that we had, but this is why I think that playing Wells for the rest of the year could actually work out for Syracuse is that while they're making this adjustment while they continue to try to work out the issues on the offensive line, you have a quarterback that's Mork in to Dungy, vented to veto.
00:19:30
You're putting a quarterback back there who knows how to take care of himself when it comes to using his legs to run for first downs, run for plays, which is something that this offense is much more clearly used to.
00:19:42
That said, I do think that if the veto gets healthy by the end of the year, he should be starting over. Welch.
00:19:47
Um, overall, I think this is a larger question that you know will have to answer moving forward this week, but also in the off season because let's let's say worst case scenario happens here.
00:19:57
Syracuse does not win arrest the game.
00:19:59
DeVito doesn't play for the rest of this season on the Orange finished three and nine, which would be Dean O's worst record at Syracuse.
00:20:07
There are going to be a lot of questions about what does the team look like moving forward.
00:20:12
The offensive line isn't really going to change a whole lot going into next year, with the exception of maybe Could Dear White actually getting onto the field.
00:20:22
And you then have to ask the question to Dino of.
00:20:26
They couldn't protect Tommy last year.
00:20:28
Are they going to be able to protect Tommy next year? Is the system going to change to make it work? Better for what you want to do with DeVito? Are you going to have to ask the veto to do more with his legs and change what he does best? Um, and I don't know the answer to those questions, but I do know that those will be some of the biggest questions that Syracuse has moving forward s.
00:20:48
Oh, that's been about 20 minutes here.
00:20:50
I'm hoping to do this every Sunday, for you guys will probably incorporate a little bit more look ahead than looking back, but I feel like right now, Syracuse fans are making that transition into, well, uh, how to adjust expectations for team that might not make a bowl this year.
00:21:08
So it's it's helpful to kind of get a lot of those things out of the way.
00:21:12
But also, if I wanted to talk about next week's for a state game, I really get couldn't right now because right now we're waiting on Ah, Vegas to give a line.
00:21:20
I got my usual email that I get every Sunday's with the opening lines from all called football games.
00:21:26
And Syracuse is one of the handful of games that has yet to receive a line from Vegas.
00:21:30
According to BET online dot g.
00:21:33
So Vegas is unsure about how to judge the Syracuse for mistaking.
00:21:38
I think this week is going to be a very interesting weak when it comes to coverage as Syracuse and Florida State, or two teams that are not performing to where the fan bases want them to two coaches who have commitment from athletic departments but not necessarily fans and both coach, I don't know if anybody here listens to podcasting, play nobody put out by banner society and our big brothers at Box Media and Espy Nation.
00:22:05
But there there's this term called an anxiety bowl, where both fans air coming into it nervous and whichever one loses is going to be much more nervous than the other.
00:22:14
I think that while Syracuse fans at this point might be adjusting expectations and saying that they don't expect Syracuse to win a loss, particularly a noncompetitive loss would definitely send a lot of panic flags up in the air if they haven't gone up already and would definitely change the tune to the coverage that we're kind of giving the team right now.
00:22:35
Um, I definitely think that things aren't great.
00:22:42
The fan base morale is not great right now.
00:22:45
But things could drastically improve if Syracuse place Florida State ridiculously close if the game goes to overtime.
00:22:52
It's a coin flip at that point.
00:22:53
But if Syracuse somehow finds a way to win with Welch at quarterback this week, then the narrative definitely changes a bit for this team moving forward.
00:23:02
Um, but that's all I got for right now.
00:23:05
Um, again, Hope to do this moral.
00:23:07
Probably do this a couple of times this week.
00:23:10
I'll probably I think the goal moving forward with these is that we're going to have a few different people doing news.
00:23:15
Magician, Sportscaster Streams for Us Steve Holler, who has been a regular on football coverage, will definitely be contributing at some point soon.
00:23:24
And I know Kevin Wall is our Olympic sports guru, but he's also got some great football opinions.
00:23:31
He'll be contributing to these videos as well.
00:23:34
I will definitely be doing a video, if not beforehand.
00:23:37
I'll do one on Thursday with my five things to watch.
00:23:41
I'll break that on a sportscaster stream first before the article goes up, and then I'll embed the video into the article.
00:23:48
So that way, if you're super into that kind of analysis, I'll do a detailed dive on the video.
00:23:54
And then the article will, of course, go into it in a different way that I can't on on this.
00:23:59
But yeah, thanks for listening to this inoperable news magician sportscaster stream, and hopefully this is the first of many in the future.
00:24:07
So go orange, even though it might feel difficult to say those words right now, there's still a lot of season, a lot of games left to be played
bucks
