It's the story of the NFL almost every single season.
At the very least.
When we're talking about our New England Patriots, right, usually the month of September, the headlines could be all over.
Play all over the place, and they can change as the wind blows.
We talked about suspensions, Cliffs, goat status, noodle arms.
But this season, with everything going on with the New England Patriots Rob Gronkowski retiring Antonio Brown signing with the Patriots.
Dominions Thomas being traded to the Jets.
Antonio Brown allegations coming out.
Antonio Brown being released.
Concerns around the offensive line.
The running game. Not working.
Tom Brady, who is 42 years old.
Plane in his 20th season in the NFL, has really been out of the headlines.
But when you look at what he's done throat these 1st 3 games of this season, he's been exceeding the standards set by Tom Brady himself.
Now, with some obvious holes that are glaring in this offense, Tom Brady could be in the headlines a lot, but Tom Brady's gonna be in the headlines for doing what Tom Brady does, and that's winning championships.
Even against the odds.
Dear Past needs what's going on.

We like football.
We like football season and everything that goes with it.
Now, before I continue on talking about Tom Brady's illustrious career and what he's done this season, here's the ladder for tonight.
The Patriots signed quarterback Cody Kessler today, and I'm gonna give my thoughts on that.
It's finally that time of the week or I'm gonna start setting up the Battle of the Contenders first of pretenders when our New England Patriots head down to Buffalo to take on those bills.
And, of course, like every night, I'll finish off this stream with the gridiron rant where I give a message to a Mr Baker Mayfield's Now The Patriots made a move today, signing Cody Kessler.
A quarterback, obviously, And really, when you look at it, the timing is perfect.
With Jared State, I'm coming in to relieve Brain in a blow a game against the New York Jets and throwing a pick six on his very first possession today, after the news broke that the Patriots signed Kessler, every single question on my instagram asked me.
A Patriots question was about Cody Kessler.
Now, one of the trend that I'm seeing is a lot of Patriot fans believe the Bill Baljic without in Sign Casler to be the new backup for Tom Brady.
People have lost faith and Jared Stem after one interception.
But guys, at least in my most humble opinion, that couldn't be any further from the truth.
And Cody Kessler is not necessarily a bad thing for Jared Stadium.
If you look at a lot of things right now, Stadium has been running the Patriots Scout team, right, so basically he's coming out each every week to practice, and he's playing the other team's offense.
He's preparing the Patriots defense.
Who? We don't know what's going on in practice.
But the Patriots defense has looked pretty damn good lately.
But I'll bet you up to right now.
Jared State and spent more time studying the Buffalo Bills playbook this week.
Any Spence studying the Patriots playbook? Hence why Cody Kessler was brought in.
He was brought in so Jared Stadium could spend more time with the first team offense.
Not for the whole practice.
Obviously, that's still primarily Tom Brady's responsibility during practice.
But still, Tim needs to start getting in sync with this offense, just in case.
Or perhaps Bilbao check is looking at this Patriots easy, breezy schedule, and they're just expecting more blowouts.
And maybe they wanna pull Brady from some games and rest him, and they need to know that stadium can go out and that he could run the offense.
Also, it's not insignificant that Tom Brady for the last three or four practices been limited as he's dealing with a calf injury.
And when the pages were looking on the league at the Drew breezes and the Ben Roth's burgers and the neck falls.
They're probably figuring why risk calm, Brady and practice when we can rest him and let him deal with his injury? Because, guys, if there's anybody on the New England Patriots who doesn't need full practices, who really only needs to be there for the big one on Thursday, it's Tom Brady.
And don't listen to the craziness that's out there today about Tom Brady's leg injury being serious.
I'm sure it's not friendly.
I'm sure it doesn't feel great.
But trust me, Cody Kessler was not brought in to be the backup this weekend. Good spirits.
I'm starting cause Tom Brady can't go or anything stupid like that.
One thing that this can do is possibly put some pressure on Jared Stadium, which isn't a bad thing.
It just opens up some healthy competition.
Allows the young kid to grow, allows the young kid to feel some pressure as he tries to compete for a spot in the NFL.
The only thing that could possibly make me doubt my own words is that Cody Kessler was signed to the 53 man roster and not the practice squad.
What does that mean? Does that mean the Patriots want inactive for this week's game? We don't know, but I also know after doing a little bit of a student research is that putting Kessler on the practice squad would have actually been a really tough thing to do.
And the Patriots would have had to have cut one of their veteran practice squad players with James Devlin going on the I R.
That opened up a spot, and you can bring Kessler in to kind of hold that role now.
Obviously, I don't know for sure what Bill Belichick is doing.
Nobody knows what Bill Belichick is doing except for Bill Belichick and maybe the inner circle of the Patriots coaching staff and maybe a handful of players.
But past they should put away the alarm bells.
Because as of right now, at least in my most humble of opinions, I am confident that Jared Stoneham will be the backup quarterback for the New England Patriots on Sunday when they take on those Buffalo bills.
Now, I'd like to continue talking about Tom Brady, and I'll be honest, and it sounds absolutely crazy when we're talking about New England Patriots.
But I wasn't even really thinking much about Tom Brady this season.
That was until today, when I read an article on nesting about Tom, and what this article did is a really highlighted just how well Tom Brady has been playing.
Now I know summer trackers are gonna come out and they're gonna say things like the Patriots have had an easy schedule.
I guess they don't consider a Steelers game with Ben Roethlisberger.
I consider that game a challenge, All right, The Miami Dolphins New York Jets that was needs your workload.
But Tom Brady, with no running game, it's starting to approach career high numbers.
He's doing it with an unstable offensive line.
No real tight end threat.
Ryan is a was played.
I think about 50% of the snaps and Malik cost is played like 20%.
It's forced the Patriots to go 23 and four receivers sets frequently.
They don't go to a lot.
He didn't have James White last week when James White with off for the birth of his son.
Now it shouldn't be surprising.
Any Patriots fan anywhere that Patriot that Brady's best season came in 2017 2007 the 16 ino season.
The Randy Moss here back down.
Brady completed 68.
9% of all this passes.
4806 yards, 50 touchdowns.
When we look at Tom Brady's stats in 2019 after three games and we look at what he's on pace to do this season, he's on pace to complete 384 passes for 4859 yards and 37 touchdowns.
Tom Brady is on pace, tohave his second best season ever.
He's on pace to have his best season in 12 years.
And really, when you look at this entire season, you look at the story lines, you look who we're all talking about.
He's almost a forgotten player on the team this year.
In my introduction to Stream, I listed a laundry list of issues, and though they've dominated the headlines, they really haven't affected the on field performance.
Now a lot of credit has been given to the defense and deservedly so.
I've pumped the tires of the defense.
They deserve a lot of credit, but so does Tom Brady.
He deserves just as much credit as the defense does.
Tom Brady performing and Tom Brady exceeding expectations has become so regular for Patriots fans.
I mean, how it's even become normal for the mainstream media that it almost goes unnoticed.
You know, the media spends their days gushing about Patrick Mahomes, and I get it.
Patrick Holmes is probably the most exciting quarterback in the NFL today.
He's also on pace to set records this season, but the fact that a 42 year old quarterback is performing at the top level the fact that this is virtually going ignored is almost a crime.
And I'll take full responsibility because I'm almost just as guilty about it.
And I'm a Patriot streamer that sits here and pumps the tires of the Patriots all day.
You know, I really fly, and I talked about it all off season.
You can go back, you can watch it.
You guys know what my thoughts where I really thought the Patriots were gonna go into this season and run a balanced offense.
Sony Michelle was gonna get a bunch of touches.
He was gonna run for almost 1000 yards.
Tom Brady was gonna throw for 4000 yards.
It was gonna be one of the most balanced offenses in the NFL old school.
But look at this season, almost all of the Patriots offensive production has come from Tom Brady's arm and the way things air shaping up, especially with all these untimely injuries.
That's probably not going to change the good news for the Patriots.
The good news for us.
The good news for the haters, too.
Good news for the media.
The good news for everybody is there is no cliff in sight, and that arm does not look very New Delhi.
And when you look at the current state of the Patriots, it brings on different pressures.
You know, I like to think back when the Patriots played the Chiefs, and when we think about the Week 14 game, I anticipate by the time that the Patriots gets a Week 14 the running game will be better.
It's early in the season.
Josh McDaniels and Bill Ballot Shack.
They'll figure things out, but for the sake of this topic right now, for the sake of what I have Tom Brady and in this conversation.
Let's pretend that they don't figure it out.
Let's pretend that the running game stays the same.
The Patriots were successful in the A F C championship for three reasons.
The Patriots defense, primarily Jonathan Jones and Devin McCourty, made Tyree kill a nonfactor throughout the whole game.
The paint number two.
The Patriots were uber efficient on third downs and number three, they kept the ball out of Patrick Mahomes.
Hands long enough.
Here's the thing.
Doesn't matter who you're playing.
Doesn't matter what defense is out there.
The Chiefs are going to score points.
You can never fully stop a Patrick Mahomes, just like you could never really fully stop it.
But this page, it's key.
Defense is good enough to slow him down, which should be go enough, which should be good enough.
But when we're thinking back to that H C championship game, the Patriots had an eight minute drive to open up the game.
The Patriots had 176 rushing yards.
A good run game does two things.
It keeps the ball in your offenses hands longer, and it starts to break the will of the defense.
If the run game isn't working and you have to go to the past.
The ball moves faster, downhill.
It takes last time off the clock.
It puts breast pressure on the defense.
They need to put out more three and outs or, at the very least, keep his little amount of points off the board hold people like Patrick Mahomes and that offense, the field goals.
And it also puts on pressured.
It also puts the pressure on Tom Brady that he probably feels like he has to score on almost every drive.
Especially when you're playing a high octane offense, It can score.
Now. There is help on the way.
After the game against Buffalo is done on Sunday, Ben Watson returns to the Patriots is gonna give Josh McDaniels his formation.
More formation ob.
Since it gives Tom Brady and New Target, it could also open up the running game a little bit.
We could see camera Meredith back or for the first time, really see what he can contribute to the team.
It'll take a few games to get him really acclimatized to the Patriots offense, and we could still see Nick.
You'll hear his debut Week nine.
Now some people are worried about a rookie wide receiver being the third receiver on the Patriots.
I get it, but guys that Phillips or set continues to play like he's playing.
And if Meredith can actually contribute McKeel, Harry could come on and be the fourth or fifth receiver.
And that wouldn't be a bad thing this season.
And you still got your Colby Myers.
There's a bit of a wild card as he progresses through the season and gets better as a wide receiver in a season that there is an illusion that the Patriots aren't leaning on Tom Brady.
They're actually leading harder on Brady than they have the last three years.
Tom Brady has answered all the critics.
He's completed all of his assignments, and he's playing like an absolute elite quarterback in.
It's almost going unnoticed around the NFL, And I can.
I think that shows us it shows the media.
It shows Patriots the tractors we have taken Tom Brady for granted.
Tom Brady may never have looked like the most talented quarterback or looked like the best quarterback on the field, but Tom Brady sure as hell is the greatest quarterback to ever stand on the field in this season, when the Patriots are going to need him at his greatest, he's playing like it.
You know, I think there's only like 83 no teams left in the NFL.
Two of them are in the A F C East, and this Sunday is being billed as the battle of the undefeated.
As 23 toe teams face off at Orchard Park, our New England pagers air travel down the Buffalo and take on the three and old Bills and the good people of Buffalo.
But they're starting to believe they're starting to believe that the Bills are looking like a playoff team.
Maybe the team that's finally gonna challenge the Patriots in the East.
I was looking at one Bills fan on Twitter the other day, predicting that the Buffalo Bills will be facing the Kansas City Chiefs in the A F C championship came.
Unfortunately for Buffalo, it's all gonna come crashing down when New England shows up.
If there is any team that Tom Brady and Bill Belichick own, it's the Buffalo Bills.
It doesn't matter who the coaches with the quarterback is, how the good.
How good The defense's the Patriots.
Tom Brady, especially just beat the Buffalo Bills.
Now. I've said it for a long time.
I've said it going back to the off season.
I said it last season.
I'm saying it now.
The Buffalo Bills are the second best team in the A F C East, not the Jets.
And I'm not skewed by the Jets injuries.
I believe the Buffalo was the second best team in the NFC East since January.
But listen to the key term second best team in the A F C East, second best.
Now, I don't expect this game to be easy for the Patriots.
I expect the Bills to go out there and fight their little hearts out.
But when we wake up Monday morning, the Patriots will be for, you know in the Bills will be three and one, and the Patriots will take their rightful place atop the A F C East in a talk T A f C fascination for those of you who are just tuning in, thank you again for tuning into my Livestream here tonight.
Ah, we're now on to I guess part two or three.
Whatever you wanna call it of this stream.
Thanks. For you are watching the replay on YouTube.
Um, okay, so let's keep talking about our New England Patriots here now.
There are a lot of people looking at the Patriots schedules.
They know they haven't faced a contender yet.
The Buffalo Bills running around hyping their three and old record in the heroics of Josh Allen.
You know the Bills and some delusional fans eyes will be the Patriots first test of the season because the Buffalo Bills have beat the New York Giants, the New York Jets and the Cincinnati Bengals.
Three teams with a combined one in eight record And the Bills worked very hard for those victories.
They relied on fourth quarter drives in comebacks to win those games.
The Bills also face the Giants team led by Eli Manning, who was benched immediately after that game for Daniel Jones.
Now the Patriots schedule, who was justice soft? The difference is they blew their opponents outs.
They weren't hard fought victories for the Patriots.
They looked like extended preseason games.
So to think that the Patriots aren't overwhelming favorites for this game is just absolutely crazy.
And don't get me wrong.
I acknowledge this game will be more competitive.
It'll be more competitive than the Jets and the Dolphins, for sure.
I don't think it's gonna be more competitive than the Steelers.
The Bills have a great defense.
They have a decent offense, but they're not quite ready yet.
As a team, they're not quite a three an o team, despite their record, and it's almost impossible to be considered a true contender with such an inconsistent quarterback.
Now, I was reading an article by David P.
Woods, and he summed up my exact thoughts on the Buffalo Bills perfectly.
Let me read to you what he wrote, he said.
Stop us if you've heard this before.
After the bump, Buffalo Bills entered this season as a relatively anonymous team, fans in western New York are starting to believe following a heart.
But don't start circling the wagons just yet.
Of the seven teams sitting at three, you know the Bills easily stand out as the most fraudulent.
For all the improvements made on the defense, that receiver in across the offensive line, major questions remain at quarterback Josh Allen's wild and maddening inconsistencies, throwing a dime one play before air mailing and open receiver.
The next are going to be far more costly as the buff as Buffalo enters the less forgiving parts of the schedule, starting with New England next week, things are heading in the right direction, but this still feels like a 500 team at best.
Now, look, I was referring to the Buffalo Bills as pretenders, but fraudulent sums it up so much better.
And this article wasn't written by a Patriots writer.
It wasn't written by a Bills writer.
This is an article by a Toronto sports reporter here in Toronto, so this was just an unbiased opinion.
But it's a guy who understands football and understand its landscape and understands who the Petr team is.
Tom Brady's on the Buffalo Bills.
You have to go back to the Ryan Fitzpatrick days to remember a loss again.
It doesn't matter what system it doesn't matter.
What coach and other There's trying to be stories out there that, but this coaching staff of Buffalo gives Tom Brady a hard time.
Tom Brady wins and Buffalo the Bills are gonna be facing the best collective team in football.
Josh Allen is gonna have to face the defense of won't allow any fourth quarter comeback in any air mailing or any Aaron throws there just gonna be intercepted.
The Bills defense is facing an offense that can actually the Bills defense is facing a Patriot's offense that can officially efficiently move the ball down the field.
So, yes, guys, pats Nation don't the Bills, but the bare minimum.
The Peter's gonna win by two possessions right now, the Patriots or seven point favorites.
I take them to cover because at the end of the day, somebody in this game will be for no.
And I promise you, right now, it won't be the Buffalo Bills.
It will be our New England Patriots.
All right, guys.
It's now time for the gridiron rant presented by DP in Sports Talk and the gridiron ran.
It addresses and reacts to news coming out of the NFL.
And tonight, guys, my sights are set on Baker Mayfield.
Every season there is an overhyped team.
After their run in the eight to the A C championship in 2017 the Jags were the team.
The Jacksonville Jaguars were gonna be the team in 2018 toe finally test the Patriots.
After winning their Super Bowl Week two against the Pats, Jacksonville cruised to an easy five and 11 record, proving that you can't win anything with Blake Bortles as your starting quarterback.
Every year before that, it felt like it was the San Francisco 40 Niners.
This cereal was the Cleveland Browns, and really, it wasn't okay.
Pick to go with.
They already had Jarvis Landry.
They traded for Odell Beckham Jr.
And, of course, they had Baker.
You know, it's an easy pick to pick the Patriots or the Chiefs to go to the Super Bowl or to be the best team in the NFC.
Here's what experts in media folks and what here's what they dio.
They pick a team like the Browns because the Browns have a chance.
What if they do nothing.
Nobody remembers your pick, but if they do come out and have a great season, then you can go on Twitter and pretend that you're a genius.
The problem is, and the problem that Cleveland's gonna have is a baker.
Mayfield's mouth writes checks that he can't cash.
He did it all off season, and it's biting him in the ass now, and it's kind of funny because it's the exact same thing that Jalen Ramsey did before the overhyped Jags failed in 2017.
And what Baker Mayfield has proven this season is that the Cleveland Browns will always be the Cleveland Browns.
You know, it's funny how Baker loved throwing shade of Daniel Jones.
He loved calling out his own teammate in the off season, but don't throw shade and Baker's direction because he can't take it.
I'm sure by now you all saw the Rex Ryan comment if you did, and here's what Rex had to say.
He said, Quote, I love to be an offensive coordinator with the Browns, Ryan said.
I have Odell, Beckham, Jarvis, Landry, Nick job and there's Baker. Mayfield.
Yeah, I know he's overrated as hell, and the Ryan went on to explain why he thinks Mayfield is overrated.
Look, I bought into the Dang Hi, Brian said.
He's a guy right now that the one read guy and then he's gonna improvise.
He's got to realize that you are one of the slowest guys on the field when you take off with it.
The ball is not coming out in rhythm.
He's staring down guys, and you're not that accurate.
Down the field end quote.
If anybody knows the value of an overrated quarterback, it's Rex Ryan.
I mean, he came.
He drafted Mark Sanchez.
But Rex Ryan's analysis isn't wrong.
The Browns hi train has now broken down in sees in the middle of the tracks.
Could the Browns bounce back? Maybe.
Do I want them to? Absolutely not.
I mean, first of all, I don't get the Browns fans at all.
I actually get the chief fans being a little bit arrogant.
Now they actually have something to believe in.
They probably pushed the Patriots further than any team did last season.
We've seen it all.
We know that our team wins championships.
We have every right to be arrogant.
But Brown fans have somehow inherited this self entitlement and arrogance that's undeserved.
And I'm gonna love seeing them fail again.
Young Baker Mayfield shot back it Rex today, and it wasn't a long, out, long, drawn out explanation like Ryan's.
He got right to the point when he said, quote, If you don't wear orange of brown, you don't matter and Rex doesn't have any colors right now for a reason.
Those are some pretty bold words from a one and 3/4 back.
Those were some pretty bold words from a guy who's went eight and nine for his entire career.
I'm sure that Daniel Jones and the G men are probably having just a belly laugh.
Baker, no real football fan, takes the Cleveland Brown serious.
And Baker, you better watch where you're throwing stones because my son, my friend, you're living in a glass house because of your act doesn't get together.
If you keep talking and don't start performing, you're not much further away from being the next Johnny football guys.
When I say this, I want to like Baker Mayfield.
But when you look at the great ones, they shut their mouths and they play football to hear Patrick Mahomes running around talking smack the players here.
Tom Brady talking smack your Ben Roethlisberger talking smack Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, Hell, even Andrew Luck when he was in the league.
No, the great one.
Shut up, put their head down, watch the tape, put in the work and go.
Guess what? Patrick Mahomes.
Tom Brady's there. Three.
You know Baker Mayfield, who never shuts that big, stupid trap of is he's one and three.
There was a time that there was rumors that the Patriots were gonna trade up to get Baker Mayfield and think about what kind of quarterback he could have been if he could.
He came to New England, have been brought into a culture that cultivates winning and doesn't cultivate loudmouths.
Baker, you're a great quarterback.
I want you to one day have success, but you need to just shut up.
