You know what was going on at the time of the crash? Difficulty finding it is an absolute magician, Sort of.
Hello and welcome to try News is an absolute livestream.
Our weekly Syracuse recap today, Uh, as always with me.
Steve Heller is our co host, Andy Pegler and Special guest Counter Hitch**** from Home Field apparel.
How we doing, guys doing well, thanks for having me on.
Yeah, we're really excited to bring on the guy who basically has been sponsoring our show since it's a subject we started right around when the home field apparel deal came to fruition.
But we really owe, but we really want Thio.
Did we lose Connor right there? Way scared away.
Wow, that was just about to ask about Indiana football.
So that is, uh, that's what happens when I bring a painful subjects.
Uh, so while I vamp and allow Steve to make sure that he can get Connor back, we're going to do a little a little different thing this week.
What? We're going to dio his He's DME were now computer just died.
Okay, get that charge.
All right, well, he's rolling.
Then I'd say we in that case, pivot again from our pivot Thio.
What happened this week? Because Oh, my God, Things happened.
Yeah, I think that this was actually kind of perfect.
We're really excited to get cornerback on. He'll be back on in a second.
Um, and we're gonna talk to him about a lot of different things that kind of aren't sports related because to be completely transparent, both Steve and I kind of looked at the way the schedule was going.
We looked at the uncer*****y around the Bryant game and we said there was a really good chance that we won't want to talk about Syracuse sports Sunday night and that everybody else is gonna be a little bit burnt out.
So let's bring Qatar on.
Let's talk about home field.
Let's talk about some weird Syracuse things that we can't even cover.
And then Syracuse Football did the most Syracuse football thing and actually put up a really interesting game.
Um, we'll get to the finish.
But before we get to the thing that we all want to scream about, what there was a lot of good that happened, including Syracuse having a lead in the 3rd and 4th quarter, which is something that we have not seen since the Onley win of the season.
And early in the fourth case was still ahead.
Um, you know, some late let down some lack of work in the offense, but in general, through the whole game, you had a very solid showing from Mr Tosh Harris, who decided to come back to come back to life for us.
So, um, I would say we're Wait.
So my computer, um, it's not a business a week or anything in e commerce retail.
My computer this week started to go on the fritz, which is really awesome.
And even those plugged in and charging just died with, like, 30% battery.
Those charging Very nice.
All those people, all those people using the BF Nunes code is just is just breaking your website, right? Absolutely.
All those folks you hear what a great your professional.
You know, I did go to school and pay stupid sum of money to get to get some training that I don't use except for this weekly show.
So what's up? Journalism school? I don't know.
Actually have never heard of that before.
Never heard anybody mention it on air during a Syracuse game game.
Okay, so this is actually perfect, because Qatar we were just talking about how Syracuse had a lead in the fourth quarter for the first time this year since their Onley win.
And then they did something that Onley Syracuse could do, which is they got into the red zone down by what was it for? Down by a touchdown and that the clock is expiring.
Rex Culpepper scrambles around to try to make something happen.
He doesn't know that he could throw the ball away or doesn't want to.
They've all done stupid things before, get sacked and then spikes the ball on 4th and 10 toe end the game and Syracuse's chance of a comeback.
That is something that is a special kind of football pain that we a Syracuse fans know.
But you is an Indiana football fan that, like, where does that rate on the Indiana football pain scale seeing that your entire brand basically started because of Indiana football pain? Yeah, so there's a tweet.
It reserves is I realized somebody liked all of them that I quote tweeted last year, so I think it was six or seven times.
I quote tweeted Last year during the football games, there's a tweet by Spencer Hall, et spes that just says God hates Indiana football and you cannot convince me otherwise.
And so I am quite attuned to the pain scale, typically the pain scale.
It's generally when India is like facing like a top five ranked opponent, you know, and it's like there's buckets, right? It's the Michigan Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, Ohio State.
Like that whole bucket.
Right? Then there's a special bucket like the pinstripe bowl were like Okay, we would be do.
But like even though the kick was so it definitely, I feel like within the bucket.
I mean, you guys put NC State so it wasn't like you were going up against Clemson, and this happened.
But it's in that special niche bucket, right? It's like the band that you know, like you and your friends, really like, but isn't like super mainstream.
Um, that's the ****ing it's it and all that.
But I mean, it's a pretty dumb way to lose a game like it's like out there.
It's in the 8 to 9 range especially.
It's not only that, just like the game ended on the spike is that you're in the red zone, right? Um, so it's It's pretty up.
You lose by six or seven example.
So you minutes? Yeah, about two minutes.
Prior to that, we had a wonderful conversation in the noon slack, and I was sitting there and I literally called it, and I was I was ****ting that it was going to happen.
And I was like, I I said at the time they were driving and, uh, state was about to kick like it was third down.
I was like, We're gonna hold them here.
They're going to take the field goal.
They're gonna be up. Seven.
We're going to score, send it to overtime and lose in overtime.
That's gonna be the most Syracuse way.
This could possibly end.
I did not realize that there was a more Syracuse ending, and that's what we get.
So, like, just fill me a Syracuse football.
I'm gonna be honest.
I haven't been tuned in my whole life to it being here in Indiana.
There have been, like, a few random years of, like, great success and was looking, like, good under under Babers for a second there.
Um what? Yeah, like would have been the Highs s.
Oh, this is gonna be something that so, Stephen, I have this running gag on Twitter where both of us are.
There's a big faction which something that you're very familiar with it.
Indiana, where fans like to fire coaches very quickly.
And the college sports is basically college sports is like, Sure you want to get a bad coach out of there.
But more often than not, you're gonna fire a coach who didn't deserve to be fired way too quickly.
And it's going to bite you in the ass down the road.
That's almost four years e sell and still creepy his own.
Yeah, So you have this situation where Favors legitimately has 15% of double digit win seasons in Syracuse history because the Syracuse Peak is basically 59 national championship with Ernie Davis winning the Heisman the next year.
Like that's, that's the peak.
And then you have a bunch of 10 win seasons in the late eighties nineties, where Syracuse was recruiting out of the Midwest and the Northeast better than anybody else because nobody was recruiting that area.
And you end up with Donovan McNabb.
Dwight free Marvin Harrison on the same team like that Z you have.
You have the Hall of Fame Indianapolis Colts.
Like that zoo Stupid.
Um, since then, Syracuse has been very bad, and there is a running joke around Twitter.
You know him because you're a big 10 fans.
But remember Greg Robinson from Michigan at all? Yes.
Yeah, he was our head coach for a while, and I think after NC double A, uh, after NC double A sanctions.
He has officially three wins in four years at Syracuse.
I can't remember if it was Spencer or somebody else, but I want to say somebody in that group, uh, dubbed him the worst college, the worst head coach in college football history.
Like they did a full blown ranking and he was dead nuts at the top.
Yeah, so he takes the program, and we've been trying to crawl out of that creator ever since.
And Dino did for a little bit, and now he's sliding back down, and everybody wants to fire him.
So that's where we are.
I'm trying, Thio.
I don't know where you guys are on the list.
Are you close on the most losses and FBS history list Because you've been playing football for a long time.
Oh, you know who holds that? Crown baby is in Indiana football way.
Trade off with Northwestern, depending on the year.
That's right. Thank you. Michigan State.
Uh, yeah, that was great.
Oh, no, I lied, you guys.
You guys got it? Absolutely.
75 right now this Indiana Northwestern Rucker 12 and 30 that is some big 10 energy if I've ever heard it.
You the old State University in New Jersey? Yeah, that is our old rifle.
We're number 43.
Uh, man, we want them out way Need to win.
We need Utah State to lose two more games that we could be a 44.
Yeah, Yeah, that makes sense.
So, actually, this is a perfect Segway.
Steve, you're You're really good at this 44 number.
That is just big around Syracuse traditions, which Connor you had to dive full into.
Uh, let's talk about how ah, home field deal and T shirt gets made because the athletic did.
If you haven't read it, subscribe to the athletic.
It's a dollar a month.
So just so you could read this story about your company, which I have to give Nicole.
She's a fantastic writer, and she set the stage so well where you and your wife are going to this brewery.
Things aren't looking good.
And the number of times that, like my wife and I have gone to a brewery when just **** hitting the fan like I was very much being in the same mental space that you that you were at that point and you guys pivoted and are now doing insanely well because you've latched onto this dumb, silly college football Internet thing.
How the article goes really into depth about like, how you guys kind of climbed out of that some really smart deals, some really great Twitter engagement which follow you guys on Twitter.
Um, but let's kind of talk about how did you go from? We're grabbing All these little small schools were doing a great job with small schools.
But then how do you make the next jump thio Okay, we need to get some of these big schools that have deals with, like, the Lear fields in the I M g s that make it a little bit more difficult to kind of break down and get in the door with them? Yeah, there are a lot of variables that place, so I will try to simplify it the most.
I can, Um, because yeah, it was a confluence of a lot of things at once.
One shot out Steven Nesbitt, actually.
What? The article.
But Nicole did write article you football that she talked e.
I think maybe that's where the Yeah, what? Stevens of Pittsburgh.
I should know that they're both of them are great.
But so home field for context.
We launched in August of 2018.
Um, myself and my wife, Christa, was co founder.
She's the design part of it.
The part that actually makes it special.
I just go and talk to people.
Um, but somebody's got way.
Yeah, way launched in August of 18.
Um, and the idea behind home field Waas.
At first it was definitely more pivoted toward smaller schools like we obviously wanted larger schools.
But we thought we made the most difference of smaller schools, which we did.
Um, but it's just it's really tough to make Uhh you need money.
You didn't make money to make a business.
So when you're doing like Wabash Yeah, seriously, We're doing what, Back in the pot? I mean, you gotta they're great cool designs.
And my dad went to Wabash, but it takes, you know, just takes a much larger market.
Right? So the way I think we describe our first year, it's like we had this phenomenal idea that we really believed in my background was a marketing any commerce and I planned to leave my old job for home field for about a year.
So we had what we thought was like a really well built fire, uh, without the actual playing.
You know, we all the components were there, like we knew we were doing the right things that the spark just hadn't caught yet.
Um, so that was for about a year from August of 18.
And then the article that inflection point was July of 19.
And right then and there were we live down the street from Great Brewery in Indianapolis.
I mean, literally, our old house.
You opened the door and you see it called Half Liter.
And so I wasn't getting a paycheck for the second we can around.
Krista hadn't even started receiving checks yet.
There's, like 800 bucks in the home field bank account.
This is like 11 months in on dso.
We kind of just like you know what? This is really stressful.
Let's go get a beer with the very little money we have.
Uh, and we just kind of talked out.
You know how we were going to do this? Um and so a lot of things came out of that meeting in that week, one of which was, even though it costs more money was adding more schools.
Um and so we were able to add schools.
Um, initially, our plan was really geographically based.
So, you know, regardless, like Indiana schools first, because our thought was, you know, we have a hub like Indiana, and then we get the smaller Indiana schools because odds are you.
If you went to Ball State, you probably cheer for I You still in the basketball, right? And so we thought we could whatever.
Then we moved to state to state.
But we realized we were just there was no, like community online.
I mean, there are people who attended Ohio University online, but there's not as much of like a full fledged community like what you guys have built.
Um, online about the bobcats.
Um, so we started to target schools where there were there was that community eso Southern Miss Georgia Southern.
Uh, you know, sm you different schools like that that we knew we could get licensed for, um and also had a community to kind of that intersection.
So that was kind of one piece adding schools.
And we did the next month 15, 11, 15 days.
Another component, the second component waas Just kind of like unleashing on Twitter.
Uh, we're like, we're we had, like, tested the waters a bit with being annoying and like leaning super hard into Indiana fandom.
And so we just kind of like, went fully into the Twitter piece.
Opponent was just Indiana football big being Indiana football.
Um, that summer I had had beers with Kyle Robinson, Chris shooting, formerly of Crimson Quarry, and the non you Indiana campaign was birthed out of that, uh, session of beers.
And so we we started to lean into it on Twitter already.
But then Indiana football over the summer like this excitement panics all this stuff, then it really picked up steam once we actually, uh, started do well, football.
Um, and in the final piece, to go along with new schools Twitter, Indiana football was engaging with then banner society.
Still a Spanish society.
Um, but I was already a listener.
Uh, Ryan Nanny had bought a T shirt from us randomly that summer.
And so I made a T shirt of him and the bloomin onion costume to send with his order.
And so, like, would love to talk about sponsoring basically, eso that's how we got to know them pretty well and, yeah, we start advertising them.
And that was a match made with heaven and heaven.
Frankly, because, like, we're willing to be stupid and do whatever.
And if you listen to any of their shows or follow them on Twitter there stupid and willing to do whatever.
So, yeah, that that was kind of the genesis and started to pick up.
And then the holidays in 2019 hit and it really picked up.
And that's when we knew, like we're gonna have jobs.
Like we just kept saying that to each other in 2019.
So, yeah, a lot of things kind of coalesced ended with Indiana, the Gator Bowl, and we were the official vendor in stadium for the Gator Bowl.
Yeah, it was really cool.
There was, like, the turnaround in six months of scripts.
And, like as a you're talking to you guys.
I mean, I can't reveal numbers or anything, but the growth that we've seen compared to where we were then is staggering.
Yeah, it's just been, like, such a wild ride.
And people like you guys have been so great to us.
So, yeah, I mean, it's been a lot of fun.
And, you know, we did, uh, those listening hopefully, no.
Probably know we drop Syracuse over there this past summer to and that was a lot of fun.
I mean, if anyone's listening, they've heard us talk about you guys a couple of times here their way.
Got a weekly basis.
Basically, I'm pretty sure preggers got what? The entire catalog, plus the wave between between me and my wife, I definitely have a lot, and it's actually really funny that you mention that I was wearing the Vita the goat shirt, who a we did way had a virtual homecoming this year is a sure a lot of other schools did.
And so I was a former member of the mascot team, as I'm sure many people listening No, because I wrote about it at the time on the website.
But I'm wearing the shirt and my coaches like, Oh, hey, you, uh, that's a really cool shirt like, Where do you get that? I'm like, Oh, it's a shop home field like this is the code to use.
They have a lot of cool auto stuff.
And it was it was just that moment of like, Oh wow, I have fully entered, like salesperson vote.
And we were all joking and we were all joking like the you know, when the, uh, the advertising when he comes in, we just reinvested in more home field stuff.
That's how we really legitimately like in in the Mail right now.
I well, I don't know if you get shipped that or not, but you see your mind and either baseball shirt.
Yep, absolutely that in the blue wave, because that z become the green wave has become the mask out the unofficial official mask out of Nunes somehow.
Yeah, Yeah, I think I think this is also something really funny. And we can call.
This is a great segue into big news Saturday, which was the thing that you guys did that Syracuse was a part of.
This two lane shirt is the number one selling short of 2020 prior to the Black Friday stuff.
I don't know if that's going to change it all, but you guys launched with two lane, right? And then Hawaii was weak, too.
And this thing that you guys created became a college Internet thing onto itself.
Was the intention always, Hey, we're going to keep growing and growing growing as this thing goes on or wasn't very much a.
We have a bunch of schools that we want to roll out.
We're trying to maximize the impact that we do.
This seems like a good idea, and we'll just kind of roll it.
Yeah, both So way.
It kind of picks up.
So, you know, we had we capped off our 2019 with, like, New Year's Day Bowl in Jacksonville, which, by the way, try to go to a bar New Year's Day in Jacksonville.
At night, everything was closed.
It was very funny.
But we end that 2019 with this really high moment.
And Chris and I kind of say to ourselves like, Man, the Onley, I think Stephen court of this in the piece like the only thing that would stop us at this point would be a massive global recession.
And two months later, go fit came to the United States s so we just kind of like, oh, crap mode.
And at that time we had had, um, March of 2020.
I think we have, like, 60 schools.
Um and I'd say our biggest ones.
I mean, we had a few big 10 schools and, yeah, one sec school in Mississippi State.
So we weren't like our Our biggest brand, probably naturally, still was Indiana at the time, Um, which it will always be personally, our biggest school, no matter what, because of our affinity and being here in India and all that, but and I know Indiana is not a brand what it used to be, Um, but we Yeah.
So that happens in March.
Koven don't Have you heard of it, Onda? Then are we send our team home for two months, Um, for paid and just like, we have no idea what's gonna happen.
But whatever on day we're trying to think like I had a pretty sinking su****ion that we as a collective nation, we're not going to handle this well on, but it would go on a long time.
And so way just made way.
Made a decision based off of that that, like, it's gonna be a long time without sports.
And even if there are sports, like, things are gonna happen in person and people are gonna be bored out of their minds.
Um, so we already who had our eyes toward adding more schools and so we were like, Well, what if we We saw success like like, small concept when we were adding the Southern Mrs in Georgia Southern's of the world in 2019 by doing one a day? So we're like, What if we made it an event but gave it more space to breathe? So it's not like I just saw this yesterday.
Now, this came today, but we could really engage with the fan base and, like, have fun on Twitter and build a community.
And, like with with you guys, like, get to know you guys better and have fun with it.
Um, so that was the concept.
Out of big New Saturday, it was gonna be alive.
Twitch, show Chris.
It was very smart and told me that's a stupid idea and that be way more work than I would want to do.
And she was right, because I made the big news Saturday videos at 11 a.m. Most Saturdays.
Um, but big news Saturday was birth.
So we knew we had all these schools and we said, We're gonna do 15 product launches, one school a week, and every Saturday we're gonna drop a video with the school And like all the design to explain the history behind it, why we did what we did and just make it a thing leading up to that week.
Initially, we're going to try to keep it a secret.
All we can do little hands, but people guess two lanes so fast based off our hint that we just, like, just kick that up the window and just decided to just be like, Yep, it's too late.
Um, but that was actually a better decision because we got more people prepared to buy at noon Eastern on Saturday.
So we launched two lane July 11th.
Um, and when we announced that we were gonna do this, we said we're going to 15 weeks and we did not have 15 schools.
Eso we just kind of We knew we could get 15 schools, right? Like you basically ah, brand, like the size of arms of the time.
We could get any practically any mid major size school and smaller.
It s so we were like, we could always fill in with some random d two or D three.
Um, we probably had 78 schools.
Maybe, um, that were on board when we did this.
But our hope was also that we could demonstrate schools like Syracuse, like, Hey, we're doing something really cool, um, blood for you to be a part of it.
So yeah, we launched two lane July 11th and then in the background.
We're talking to school.
So, like you guys, at one point, I met Rachel from Syracuse, licensing at a conference back in January and you guys had also previously introduced me the email to her as well and spoke on our behalf, so that was really helpful.
But she, uh, she's really cool.
We've done some projects now, even since then that we're working on Andi.
She's really interested in, you know, doing something unique with their licensing program at Syracuse.
So she she was sending us ideas like she told us about Vita and pointed to the block that you guys wrote about it a couple of years ago.
That's where you could ask me about Vita comes probably right from your blogged.
Yeah, the mystery has been solved.
Yes, it's all circular logic.
Um, yeah, that z kind of how it started and then, you know, we got the attention.
His name actually carries a lot of weight in the licensing world because of the program that z Rachel's building.
And she cares a lot of sustainability, as do we on dso if you if you pass the test Cecere accuse you are seeing is like, Oh, they must be really good job of sustainability because your standards are so high.
Eso Even though it may not be like a top 10 brand in terms of size, like in Alabama or Michigan.
The name carries a lot of weight.
It also help that we got license for UConn to so nothing like nothing like playing that right off each other.
The Syracuse UConn big news.
Big news Saturday.
Uh, standing was probably the most invested.
I've been in a sporting event in 2020 and I'm really not ashamed to say that it was literally Ah, purchase at 11:57 p.m.
Eastern That put you over the top against UConn.
Can you confirm or deny if it was Eric Stephen Dorff? Uh, E I mean, it was funny, So I was actually in northern Indiana like a cab, and I have t mobile.
So there was no way I was getting service.
And I know WiFi, so I would have to, like, walk out like, a mile to the side of the road to tweet for a few minutes and check on their their results.
And then I go back.
Um and so maybe way through the day, I was like a horse.
They're not going to do it.
And then I kind of like tweeted like the like.
For those who don't know, we started doing standing for being you Saturday and like, sales standings.
And for whatever reason, people got really invested in giving us more money.
Um, eso UConn had been launched a few weeks prior.
A month prior, actually.
And, um, Syracuse was not on pace to get UConn.
And then we tweeted out that they weren't on pace.
And then oh, boy, reality the troops last second.
Yeah, Thio catch them.
Which was I mean, good for frankly, I enjoyed it, but worked out okay for not so much from said Husky, but yeah, no Yukon fans were ****ed cause they're like the brand was significantly smaller when you launched this, and it was targeting like, Well, sorry.
Please tell me more about Dr Bloggers.
I was literally just about to ask you about I'm literally wearing the home field joggers right now because that was my Christmas request from my parents.
Because, And one this is normally work.
Steve and I would love home field.
These were the most comfortable sweatpants that I owned by far in a way, they're fantastic.
E could understand why people would want the sad husky on them.
But going going into this, like, weird, eclectic, weird logo situation when you reach out to a Rachel at Syracuse and you're like, Listen, we need the weirdest logos.
We need a rock in a fur coat wave with a pennant that looks like it was wants to kill you.
Like what? Obviously, every school is a little bit different, but, like, what is that process like to go to a school and say we need your old stuff.
We don't want any of the new stuff that Nike is using.
We want the stuff that everybody forgot about, and we can make money off of that.
Say, you know, it depends on the school.
Some schools air super open to it.
Um, it's I will say it significantly easier, folks.
Now, um, because, I mean, we're still the brands.
Only two, not even 2.5 years old.
Right? Um, so I get the first year and a half when we reach out and be like, Hey, we could do this.
And they're like, OK, who are you? But like because people want to see it sustained success, right? And they want to if there there, um, tying their brand two hours.
So if we do something stupid, uh, we still are were very stupid, but we're within bounds on Twitter.
Um, or if we, um just like like, Peter out, they don't want a partner with that right s.
So I think part of it are longevity now, like, frankly, the pretty big success in the social media space.
Well, that's made it easier, but yeah, I mean, going So like, some directors, like, freak out like they love it s o like this slippery rock licensing director was like, Thrilled.
Like, where did you find this? Like they most people get really into it.
Um, so that was cool.
And then, like, yeah, Rachel was giving us cool idea because like, there's some ideas she gave us that we haven't used yet.
We're excited about for whatever, Dua.
Syracuse Refresh AB.
I'll be interested to see how the sad dog joggers go.
We got him on three products before if they ever we ever did.
Decided to get cave into the hordes of angry masses and do the sad dog daughters be interested to see if you can let us do it.
But so you just drop some amazing little ****y nuggets right there that will make one that will make no escalators.
Go to Nunes Magician and click on a link for us and watch a video.
So one thank you cannot wait to Lord it over them.
Guys, this is me lording it over you.
Secondly, you kind of talked about.
Obviously, there's might be some still things in the works because mention that what is the design process like? Like I remember very early on when you and I first chatted.
You showed me those two arches that air the vintage dome logo.
And you're like, we just sent us over this bunch of files like what the heck are What the heck are these? Um, your wife does the design.
Uh, she what? I kind of as a creative person.
I'm very intrigued as to what do schools typically dump on your lap and then because you're the T shirt guru, like what makes a good T shirt like, what makes a really good retro collegiate apparel? Because once people get your shirts, quality is fantastic.
They're comfortable, like you mentioned their sustainable.
But its people are buying it because of design because of the way it looks.
So what makes that jump? And then you've got them hooked? Yeah, the design process.
Most schools, honestly, we're coming to them with stuff.
Um, so some schools will have art sheets like there are programs there's with with a lot of schools like Power five schools.
They have a program called College Vault, which is exclusive, pretty exclusive program that we've gotten a lot of waivers into.
So, like the Arches logo for examples on Syracuse is college ball sheet, Um, whereas we'll find we'll do a lot of research of things that maybe aren't on the vault sheet in some schools will allow you to use things that aren't on their vault sheet.
Some don't, um, so again, all depends on for school.
And then we'll also do a lot of research beyond the things that wouldn't maybe be on their vault sheet.
We'll do a lot of research.
How are those marks actually used, right? Um, so it's not just a matter of slapping him on the show and calling it a day sometimes it is because, you know, we think, Okay, these haven't been in the market before.
We wanna introduce the mark first to make it be about the mark itself.
And then it can play a bigger role in a design later because people familiar with that.
Right? So that's that's a lot of it.
I mean, Chris, that is just a phenomenal designer.
I mean, she is great at the work it, but also just so much research goes into it.
Um, as someone um like, we have a pretty good sense of what Wilma hit almost every week.
We do it during big news Saturday, which that ended November 7th.
Um, we would sit down and, like, rank what we thought the sales order would be of each shirt just to get an idea of stock and whatnot.
And we're almost right every time.
Like, almost like it would always be like one or two shirts off, um, in terms of like, where they were ranked.
Um And so I think the biggest thing is, um, like it just the word we say a lot is I mean, one thoughtful in the research part, but then clean as well I think a lot of design.
This is from a non design person.
I don't I'm not talented.
Um, a lot of design is way too cluttered and busy and tries to do too much eso We always opt for less.
Frankly, and I think there's a lot, um, behind like, your choice of color for blank.
We use a lot of gray.
We use a lot of navy, Um, and that could get boring at times.
And we'll do stuff like with the light baby blue, uh, to link shirt.
But it has to, you know, we're thinking about with how someone where this in the wardrobe, You know, can they throw a jacket over it or flying long? Can it still work? So you have to balance that, too, because their schools like Purdue, that have a gold.
You know how many people like wearing a yellow T shirt like a yellow gold T shirt? But you can't not make a yellow gold T shirt for a school that has yellow gold, son their colors.
So yeah, e mean, you're also the brand that didn't make an orange for the orange.
Oh, No, I didn't.
I forgot about the 44 because I literally just pulled that up.
I forgot about the 44 cent ahead you issue with.
That is, there is a a global fabric shortage right now for a lot of things.
Uh, supply chain wise.
So, like joggers, The reason we don't have the joggers for the last few months, Not the sad dog ones.
That's a matter of taste.
But the reason we don't have our home field joggers, um, our because we I mean, they sold out almost immediately.
And then when we went to our manufacturer, like, we need a lot more, um, they were like, It's gonna be three months at least.
We just like awesome.
Um, even right now, like our excel, and to actually is already sold out on the side are element that we like crap months ago.
Um, which is a bummer, because we love to obviously be able to sell them, or, um but yeah, so orange.
There's already running thin.
So we grabbed a lot of orange shirts knowing when we heard about Syracuse.
That's how were ableto get it on the site.
But yeah, we would love to do more orange things is a great It's a great pivot.
Like what? What can we expect from home field in 2021 with your the holiday season is in full swing.
We've got our promo code with you guys, which will reiterate a few minutes.
But what? But what is? Obviously you might not have the exact plans for, like, what, 2021 plans.
But you kind of mentioned Syracuse might have some new things you've got.
Obviously some new you mentioned on Twitter Mawr HBC use are coming into the fold at some point.
Like these all seem like really exciting things.
So in regards to just in general Syracuse, I would be subscribed to Syracuse athletics.
You know, list is all I will say.
See some special next few weeks.
Not a new design, but maybe a special offer way are doing product refreshes.
Um, in 21 we have to figure out what schools Exactly.
I would imagine Syracuse would be one of them again.
We have 100 schools, and we did just grab a bunch of new schools, were old schools, haven't had it, but, um, looking for that.
I mean, we have Season two big news Saturday coming up in 2021 which will be a blast.
I need some time off for that, though.
Yeah, I mean, some of the new schools outside of big news Saturday we're launching.
I think it's at least five hbc use.
Um, near the beginning of the year, we launched our first HBC you in in North Carolina A and T in October over, and we're really thrilled with it in 10% of all the proceeds of what we sell for HBC use go to the Legal Defense Fund, which we were ecstatic to be able to do and partner with the university.
Clearly, they wanted to partner with us.
So we have five more, at least on the calendar for 21.
And we will continue to add them because in general, the way that we see a lot of smaller schools, um, in profile are underrepresented.
HPCs are also very underrepresented.
And there's a lot of history and tradition that we want to honor with it.
So take a good time with that.
Talking to a lot of folks, especially folks over HBCU game day, uh, to learn more about the history and making sure we do it justice, but excited for that, Um, we are hopefully looking at maybe some team logo joggers and 21 is well, again, if we can get things in stock, I'm determining whether or not we want just a block s or an auto.
You know, we'll have to see here, but I feel like auto would be kind of sick.
I will always vouch for joggers.
I don't know if you guys have any, uh, pregnant.
Anytime you put out on something pregnant is wearing himself.
So he's always partial.
E? Yeah, he was He was in the soup For what, Three years? Four years or four years? I got tattooed on my wrist like that's that's how stupid.
Yeah, that is the autos.
Actually, this is a cool this one.
You should do this other share.
Auto has a trademark signature that was created at some point.
So that is something that me and a couple of other autos we made a dumb suicide pact, and we all got tattoos of different auto things, and I opted for the the signature underneath my watch wrist.
So that way you can hide it on job interviews.
Yeah, I've got nothing like that.
I wish we had a mascot.
We gotta bring back the bison.
You've the retro mascots.
That home field has has been fantastic.
The number of conversation that Steve and I have had over, like, which retro mascot to get.
Uh, it's just There's just so many good ones that you guys have dug off.
Well, thank you.
I appreciate that.
Hey, guys, I totally forgot speaking Indiana.
All right? Yeah. Yeah.
You had to go there.
Gave him enough on Tom Crean.
We'll have to go there.
He had to go there.
I mean, that's pretty cool.
You know, the worst part about that was my buddy.
One of my good friends at work actually was randomly on vacation down in the Outer Banks like late nineties ish, early two thousands and was just, you know, bull**** with this other family next to them on the beach.
And they were, you know, playing around in the surf and whatever, uh, guy's name was Keith and behold ends up like e played, played basketball back in the day conversation led one way to another.
It's like he's literally like this die hard Syracuse fan like was there.
The opening day of the dome was there for everything.
Like, he's like sitting there.
He's a nice guy.
I can't eat him anymore.
Yes, That's the Onley win I was looking at.
That's the only one we've ever had against you. I think.
E think we're one in five in basketball, right? It is.
I remember the Tom Crean game.
I was a student at the time trying to be the next cost us whatever.
And so I was host.
I hosted a Google was sponsoring Syracuse for some weird thing, and everybody had to use hangouts as like a streaming platform, which was the dumbest idea in the world.
But I did a Google hang out to preview that game came with a bunch of student media and actual Syracuse media, and I remember bring that up like Indiana is only 11 time and it was in the national title game.
Like do they get number two hearing? We unanimously said Indiana will beat Syracuse and I stopped to make public predictions on live streams.
Because of that, until now way are again that Oh, that's truly I'm trying to think of.
I mean, a more painful basketball game in my Indian about.
I mean, all of them are paying now, but that that's probably the most painful game of experiences in Vienna fan.
I mean, other than the 2002 national championship game, But we weren't we were playing with house money that year.
We were five seed.
We weren't that great.
Um, but yeah, that was just a little bit about that house money for a natty 96.
Uh, there's Hey, that was that was the run that got me to be a fan.
And that was probably, I think, before both your times.
But that that definitely that's what put me in the the firm Syracuse diehard category was John Wallace.
That whole squad, like just making this run out of absolute nowhere to the title game, and it's like, Okay, I guess I could like this team now and why you have the nineties.
Exactly why I went straight to the nineties.
Whatever the hell they decided to do, but it looked cool.
Yeah, that was my favorite.
Learning that there were protests over those logos.
Oh, over which one? This you're wearing.
Really? They were? Yeah.
I read in some something, I think Rachel sentence me.
Actually, there was, like, a student protest when they first, like, released, that I need to go do this because it was so out of the realm.
Of what the hell? Everything that she was.
Yeah, well, I mean, you're talking about a brand that, like, the early nineties, If I remember, right, there's, like, one logo that was like comic sans, Almost so Yeah.
That whole nineties brand thing wasn't it Wasn't really trying anywhere, let alone Syracuse.
No, they went off the rails.
I mean, I love champion MBA jerseys because they're all in the nineties, and they're just, like growth.
Like I have a somewhere deep in my ba*****t.
I have ah, teal, Jerry Stackhouse, Pistons, Jersey things.
They're just like, yeah, the nineties everybody wants wild with.
There's the trivia that we had to learn, and she will hate me for saying this, so I hope she doesn't watch it.
But my old mascot coach when we were getting on the team part of our hazing initiative, because you can't Hayes.
But you had to answer, uh, Syracuse trivia, and it was, like 40 not 44 questions.
But it was a lot of questions about random, obscure Syracuse trivia and one of the ones that I screwed up in because I couldn't find it in a book anywhere, even though the guy who founded our block wrote literally a book about Syracuse.
Um, he the mascot situation that led to auto was basically racist thing that we don't use and then period of blank.
And then the school voted basically between a wolf and an orange and the orange one.
But the chance of leadership was basically really upset that the orange one because I thought the wolf would be better.
And it makes total sense that, like this nineties brand that has that makes zero sense is like, you know what Syracuse needs a wolf.
That's that's exactly what we need.
A forgettable mascot.
I'm like auto like auto that basically stuck around by pure force of will.
So I'm glad that you have made some amazing auto here.
I cannot wait for whatever 2021 brains and whatever special projects you guys have cooking for Syracuse, because I think if Steve and I have not made this abundantly clear, we really like your stuff.
We really love that sustainable.
Both of us are earthy, crunchy, literally an environmental scientist.
It's in the job title, but your shirts are ridiculously comfortable and have remarkable fund graphics.
And this has been a lot of fun, not just because we've interacted on Twitter a ton, but in general I think that this home field thing that you guys have done has been exactly what 2020 needed.
Just in terms of this is a weird year.
Let's let let's let an apparel company have the most personality on called football.
Twitter. That's right.
That's right, baby.
Eso I guess the last thing that I kind of want to bring up is way talking about Keith Smart.
We got it out of our system.
College basketball is actually happening.
Your yeah, both of our teams air in that weird been were big name programs that probably should be way better than we actually are, but we're not.
So what are your feelings towards Indiana basketball in 2020 2021.
Well, Terry Morin got them ranked last year after two years ago than being ranked for the first time ever.
I am really pumped.
I've watched a lot more women's basketball than I have in the past.
I think the team is gonna be great.
So I don't know what you're talking about about big programs.
Has got them ready.
I do love basketball team.
I assume you're asking about the men's team, which I'm not as excited about.
I'm not gonna lie.
Uh, sounds like us to E dear God, have we become the same? It's, um so we have a lot of talented players.
Um, are she has recruited the state quite well.
Ah, make mollifying the fears of all dads in Indiana that you don't recruit to stay.
Um, he's gotten the Mr Basketball three years running.
Would have been the mystery of basketball this year.
Thio reclassify and come up.
So he's recruited quite well.
Uh, our issues, um, we cannot for a state that everybody grew up with a sick jump shot.
Get a jump shot.
We're in your four.
And in Game one against Tennessee Tech went 10 for 22 from the free throw line.
So yeah, it is tough.
Uh, I think we'll be decent.
I think we'll be like 25 to 35 kenpom range, which probably means like 20 to 25 ranks.
Um, it's just I don't know.
It's not As with with Archie, I think it's gonna be like, you know, your ceiling and you know your floor is much higher.
Tom Crean, you're playing roulette, Baby, you're a country.
And next you were not making the n i t.
Um, that definitely fits our aesthetic more, um, with the football thing, you know, just being wild and Chaos team.
But now I think we'll be fine this year.
I just don't know. I'm not.
I'm not as excited.
Maybe once football is over, I'll be able to turn border men's basketball.
But you know, not as excited.
So one thing this has proven to me is that Syracuse in Indiana are the same school, because if you have, if you have literally just changed names in that exact description you just gave, you've got pretty much our thoughts on the entire thing.
Well, maybe once a year, he's football's done.
We could probably care more about men's basketball, but women looked really good today.
So now Terry Morin rocks.
She's doing a great job with that program.
Yep, accused Q's got the issue, women doing great things.
So, you know, I think I think I I pointed this out.
To my to my bosses, to Syracuse alone that the that the Syracuse Quinton Quinton Hills in the men's or the women's coach has recruited Mawr top 100 recruits and gotten them to campus in the last like three years than Jim Boeheim has in the last decade, which is that moment of 00 crap.
Oh, yeah, we've got a recruiting power.
Who's using the Syracuse leverage? And it's not the men's coach to top 10 girls this year.
Yes, so what is the recruiting? I mean, you don't have to go into it.
Oh, no, we will eyes it just like black of efforts.
This is the victory lap riding off into the sunset.
And what's What's the deal? Big hit.
One hop left saying he was the Mike Hopkins when he went to Washington was the guru for Syracuse recruiting.
Um, and he brought all those kids with him to Washington.
But after that, it doesn't seem like anyone like there's a couple of yeah, Adrian Autry and Gerry McNamara kind of getting their feet about them.
But you go from a guy who was established since you know he's been in Syracuse program since 93 with Hopkins, and you take all that local knowledge, all that recruiting base, all of that combine that with the heavy dose of sanctions, whether warranted or unwarranted, throw in a dash of were in Syracuse.
And um, yeah, there's a lot of like I'm sitting here and Camilla's right outside Syracuse and the Yeah, here we are.
Yeah, yeah, the the The thing that I think is also severely underrated is that every Connor, what is your impression of Jim Boeheim? Like when you think of Jim Boeheim, one of the three words that come to your mind to two or three s o.
I mean, I feel like you'd be more old school clearly right, like attractive to play, for If I may be a 17 year old kid right now, I want to go basketball.
I don't think I'm going to Unless my my transcendent talent maybe named Carmelo Anthony that I'm going to go to the N B A and B some superstar.
Okay, so I'm then I'm like, Okay, well, if that's not gonna happen, I'm probably not gonna go to Syracuse.
New York basketball.
Is that kind of where I'm hitting on the head here? Yeah, but that was about 20 years ago.
Two. So that was before Boeheim was breakdown.
Was crotchety and old then.
But he wasn't as Cratchit Eoraha's old right, And he's our curmudgeon, and we love him.
But he's a crotchety old *******. Yes.
And so then you have Mike Hopkins, who? I met him twice because he was It's really good friends with somebody that was a teacher in my program and that he had Hopkins come and speak to us.
And there is not a single human being on the planet who has more energy and is more positive than Mike Hopkins.
So you basically had Boeheim be the bad cop at all times, and my cop con's be the good cop at all times, and my Coppins is the guy welcoming you into the program, getting you in the door.
And no assistant coach is going to match that.
And so now you just have a crotchety old guy and I don't think that that's going toe work with today's high school basketball stars in any way, shape or form.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Is the plan for Buddy Thio become coach right away? You know, Gerry McNamara plan if we took a poll right now on the site of who we should have is the head coach between Buddy Boeheim, Gerry McNamara, Adrian Autry? I'm pretty sure it would be like 30 30 between McNamara and Buddy.
And then Autry gets the remaining votes the lottery wins.
Technically after would win.
Yeah, e can't math.
This is why I can't do that.
That's how it should be.
That's not how it would be right? Eso this junk? I mean, would fans be upset if you hired a coach and they didn't like in Georgia Southern? They departed from the option for like one year and people freak if you guys left zone, you guys, we've got people.
Now that they're *****ing and moaning about the zone still so e don't think it be as bad, especially without, you know, behind the head of it.
Yeah, if they if they won without the zone, they would not care.
The minute that you lose that first game without running a zone, the guys getting chased out of town 100%.
All right it is, man, I really do want We were joking on the site.
We're talking about future football schedules and about how Syracuse hasn't scheduled anything beyond 2023 at this point, I think, is what we should just really do.
A one and one forever with Indiana like that just seems like a really easy sell to both sides.
Like, Hey, let's just let's just make this the an annual football nonconference game.
Oh, boy, it z inviting Indiana into your home to play football is, uh, inviting a dog.
That maybe is how strains, um, and has a pension for things that are flammable.
You just never know.
You know, if you're one of the top 25 or top 10 teams, unless you're Penn State shout out on state.
Yeah, you gotta figure.
Three years ago we went four and seven and knocked off Clemson.
I forgot about that.
Like we're until the Notre Dame game.
We were the last regular season game.
They lost that kind of rocks supporting what happens when you put chaos theory and chaos theory together? I do not know.
Uh, man 2023 man, Tom Allen will have been coming off his third straight Big 10.
Coach of the year.
We're not talking about that Vandy job.
No, no, no, no, no, no.
Are you kidding me? Indiana, the Vandy.
Oh, it was an Indiana man.
I love it so much.
I would run through a brick wall for him.
A lot of people say that phrase, but he is.
I normally just skip over and he, like all the like things that, like Team Social Media Council put out a postgame speeches, land, Whatever.
Yeah, but Tom Allen's It's like appointment viewing like, oh, Indiana football Twitter account.
Put out a new video.
Gotta get inspired.
Yeah, that'd be the Babers Virginia Tech and then Clemson winds.
He had a couple of a couple of a couple of post post game gems during those? Uh huh, Yeah, way.
If Syracuse ever does pull off another stupid upset, which I do not think it will happen this Saturday if they beat Notre Dame this Saturday, you can all keep this and use it for bulletin board material for the time.
But there's no there's no way in hell Syracuse is going to the big House and beating Notre Dame, period.
But if they do have another Dino Babers amazing speech, I want that on a home field shirt.
At some point in time, I will send you the cliff and you will be a part of.
I mean, uh, it's all falling into place.
Syracuse beat Notre Dame, their one on one.
They played Clemson in the Jefferson game.
One of them has two losses.
Can't put that team in the, uh, college football playoffs.
So that puts you at whatever sec champ, Um, and then Bama and maybe another SEC team. Okay.
No. Big 12, Pac 12.
Ohio State maybe misses another game and then looking at Indiana Northwestern, the Big 10 championship game? No way.
Now we're losing the Northwestern baby, your CFP bound Indiana.
All thanks to Syracuse one Notre Dame.
So it's all part of the plan and we'll lose by 80 to Alabama, and it will be hilarious.
But it does not matter because you made the playoff. No.
And I'll have a House fans for years, cargo shorts and all yelling in that Indiana.
Indiana had a legitimate Big 10 championship game and I will mimic, uh, the response of former Chicago Bears and Vanderbilt quarterback Jay Cutler.
But throwing my head back and yelling as loud as possible don't care basis forever.
And I I really won't care.
Because in the animal made the college football playoffs, I feel like that is a perfect place to end.
Connor, this was a lot of fun.
Thank you for coming on.
Thank you for sponsoring our show.
Our site and all this stuff.
Uh, keep making amazing shirts.
