Hello and welcome to full press coverage Live we are.
And Chris, you guys be covering the NHL tonight.
We regret to inform you that Mr Ian Glendon is out.
He, uh, suffered upper body injury.
I think it was the flu or ah, migrant was a migrant that took him down.
So we're gonna be without his service is tonight.
But we have three crucial topics that we wanted to cover tonight.
Um, starting with the big headline of the day, the Patrick Maroon signing.
What do you think? What do you think, Chris? You know, first reaction.
It's how much help does Tampa need? You're the best team in the league and you go out and sign a guy like a Patrick Maroon, and it just beefs up your bottom six, and it gives you more grit.
And that's this type of player.
Patrick Maroon is.
I know I hated watching him play in my Dallas Stars and round two of the Stanley Cup playoffs, and I hated watching and play the rest of the playoffs as well, because he was just he was that guy, that he's one of those guys that you hate.
If he's not on your team.
He's the guy you love.
If he's on your team, right? And so Ah, just for the money that Tampa got a mad and he was 900,000.
I was in and it's it's great Well, but not in terms of money.
Because the past two seasons Hemin has his representation have.
Really, I guess you could say kind of screwed him because I think he's been holding out for looking for a multiyear deal in the past two years.
He wasn't given one, and so he was.
He took a one year deal with St Louis last year, took a hometown discount.
And then, you know, now he's making less than, Ah Hunt in less than a million now.
And he's probably where he's gonna be a favorite to win the Stanley Cup.
So a good situation for him and that's a good situation.
Tampa Bay felt like a lateral move in a lot of ways.
Um, he just went from one championship contender to the next, uh, and going back to that Dallas series.
He scored two goals, one in Game one, and I think Game seven as well.
He put up 28 points and 74 games.
I mean, that's not bad for bottom six guy.
I mean, take points where you can get him.
At least, uh, he did not score in the last nine contest.
That the Blues plate in the place dating back to May 19th when they were in the Shark Arena all the way through, um, the last game at all costs.
So, in terms of value, maybe even record a shot on goal in the last three games in the Boston Terry's.
So in terms of overall value, I don't know what he adds.
Two. The Lightning.
Other bandy intangibles.
I think he's like he's like a Maur Cody McLeod, if you will.
But you know, I'm not.
I'm not entirely sure why he decided the Lightning of the then maybe just another chance at another cop.
But it's certainly an interesting move to say the least, Um, and like you said, it was got a great values.
So thanks the low risk, high reward situation.
And what do you think it does to the St Louis Blues of the team? You know, I think the blues were expecting to lose him.
I when once they won the Cup because I'm sure that Maroon had his sights set on a certain dollar amount and the Plews probably had their certain dollar amount and they just couldn't match.
And the Blues figured they got some expiring contracts the next few years that they gotta pay.
And Marone, who's a 31 years of age, is probably not where they want to spend the moment, considering the role that he plays to a team.
So yeah, yeah, um, kind of reiterating back to what he adds in terms of value in being in the last in that Boston Siri's.
He didn't play over, uh, 15 and 1/2 minutes.
He did not mean didn't get a whole lot of ice time.
You got less than 10 minutes on three separate occasions, less than nine minutes in the first game.
So, like I said, it's a really it's a lateral move.
Done it a great value.
Um, but overall, it just that's not a huge signing, right? There's no, like, we still have you heard about Mitch Marner.
We still haven't Rico ranting and me go Renton and skating and Finland now, So he's skating with another.
You what? After a blind, he still hasn't.
O'Connor still hasn't like there are a lot who have not signed yet that, you know, we're approaching September real quick.
So you know, Is it gonna be Ah, what is the opposite of star studded? What's what's gonna happen to the NHL overnight? I mean, we don't have a lot of you're in the NHL, right? Yeah, I know.
It's it's been something.
We've been moderating monitoring.
July 1st, Winfried it opened and really in terms of the art, if a front, all we had since then 24 hours of the Sebastian ah ho news.
And you know, everyone was so excited on off per sheet and then about two hours.
Where's later? It's like, Yeah, we're gonna match it.
So, uh, it was really a big build up for nothing.
And ever since then, there's really And I'm pretty sure that if Indians didn't offer sheet e with the rest of these guys like Marner and Randy, Carolina would have wanted to play hardball as well because we know, but we know very well there Cam's name, but we know he's ah, he likes a nickel on diamonds players.
He's very cheap when it comes to his signings, But I think once he figured what they you you probably get the pay our ho.
And then when the numbers came in from the offer sheet, they're like, Oh, yeah, that's a lot like us when we were anticipating will gladly do that.
So, you know, since holds only are a fait that, uh, I think, actually, the one in recent weeks.
What it was Colin White, correct from Ottawa.
He signed one a couple weeks ago yourself.
14 or 15? Big are a Fae names that we've seen in and only one month and 1/2.
So it's It's slowly creeping up on us, and training camp starts in a couple weeks.
Preseason starts, week or two after that.
And it's, you know, some of these guys the time, um, might not be playing for their there teams until maybe monitor month or month or month. Three.
Yeah, uh, let's go about Mitch Marner real quick, because I, uh, that was that.
That's the biggest surprise to me in this offseason about why he has not us with a team much less the Toronto Maple leaves.
He's a young kid.
Um, I mean, he's from what? It looked like you.
He looked You're in the playoffs.
He had four points and seven game games.
Ah, he put a 94 Toronto lives without Miss Martin.
He's definitely, um, gonna leave.
It's gonna be like a gap in their offense.
It was kind of like kind of like the Lion Neiland.
But times, too, because I think he's much better player than the lander.
And, you know, it's it's definitely gonna put a damper on, um, there first finds grandkids.
He fit pretty well when he was playing with Tiberias, then, I mean, I think Will make definitely makes his linemates better.
And plan was a guy like Martin, whose thumb up to the level.
And, you know, um, Toronto's got nice young Ford's on the roster like they have.
Ah, captain and Johansson.
I mean, I think one of those, if martyr, decides to sit out.
Ah, the first month, month and 1/2 of the year, like the lander did last year.
That and I don't think they'll have a problem in terms of filling his spot on the first line.
But the scoring depth that come was with when they had Capital and Johansson because some of the guys who was playing third line minutes last year and he was a 20 goal scorer.
And so you put him first line, you put it on the first line width of areas.
I think he's gonna put up some great numbers again.
But, you know, with martyr out, that's Johnson's twin goals on the search for missing out on and it's it's It would definitely sting for them, in a sense, but I they are.
They still be a great team. They still make the playoffs.
Just it would just Amber down there.
Scoring? Yeah, um, just kind of put it into perspective.
He had 21 power play points and three power play goals, and that's saying something about how he plays it even stronger.
So, um, like you said, it's gonna put a damper on the offense.
And I definitely agree that Don't you know, the lines team? And, um I mean, Mitch Marner.
I could see what was a franchise kind of layer, but, you know, maybe he'll sit out.
Next storyline is, uh well, you garbage going to fit in.
Do you think I think it's, uh, you know, I'm kind of mixed on.
It's because, you know, at one time it's because he Edmund Tin just seems like a toxic environment for him.
And you know, him going to Finland kind of gives ham shank or a chance to kind of reshaped his game, Uh, kind of give himself.
Is he going back to Finland or is he going to Sweden? Because I know he's from Sweden.
Think going back to he signs Contract it, Finland with opt out clause.
So okay, plan with car Paata finish Lee again.
But, I mean, that's definitely you're not going to see a large number points from him just because, you know, in those types, they're not going to see guys who score points per game.
But I think that's definitely gives him a chance to showcase that.
He's those some of what a lot of people I thought he was gonna be when he came out of that 2016 draft.
No, uh, give him a chance.
Uh, end up with another NHL team day because it doesn't look like Ted Minton wants to trade him right now.
Ah, he has very little value knowing that he doesn't want to be there and probably got a certain asking price that the teams don't want pay right now for the type of that for the type of project that pull your B would be.
He was a first rounder, right, fourth pick overall and his last fourth line.
And that's not what you want when you get a first round.
Uh um And you know, uh, you have guys like condiment David and Leon Dry Title, who are never going experience winning a Stanley Cup.
If they stay in Edmonton, they are never going to get that chance.
They're never gonna get that chance to compete and arguably make David and dry side 12 punch the best 12 punch in the league in terms of center.
And you know, now you have guys like James, who's Neil on the team, feeling like who you are, who you are.
So, uh, it's going to be an interesting season once again and by interesting it, like he said, it's a toxic environment, people, right? Yeah, and kind of like piggybacking off, you know, the RV was the fourth overall pick in the draft.
You know, going into the draft, the RV was, um, actually go third overall.
Um, because that 2016 waas it was awesome.
Matthews to Toronto.
Patrick Line Peg and then Pierre Luc Dewar third Columbus.
And I remember watching the draft and seeing Columbus take Pierre Luc Dubois at three.
And I'm thinking to myself what dealing pulley RV is the much better talent, you know, charm a kick line.
It looks like the genius and all of this because he must have seen his team.
Must have saw something and pull your RV that they didn't like.
They went with the guys in Luke Dubois from Cape Breton in the Q m J h. Ellen.
I think he's not other number one center.
Yeah, I'm a khaki.
Lina did something right? A couple of years.
Not to mention pretty kind of has a weird face.
Like it kind of looks like Jack Nicholson joke for you know what I mean? Hey, maybe that's what Columbus saw.
Maybe that's what it's got.
I'm also gonna look tops in goalies that shell network put out.
Um, where do we start.
Um, Sir J Husky number two league and with nine shut outs last year for much.
Anything else in terms of looking at basic statistics, I mean, he doesn't even rank and goals against average clumps and you go on a scoring surge right at the end of a pick up.
But I mean, number two.
Chris, what? Do you order your thoughts? Yeah.
I mean, it's really you.
It's been a trend of when we've seen these any chopped analysts the past.
I want to say month that they but I want every week, starting with the center's back, the beginning of the month.
The senators, the wingers, the defenseman.
Now the gold is all these lifts.
They're quite laughable.
Um, and the like.
You said we can start with bobrovsky.
It's, um it's really because I think the hype about Dubrowski mainly leasing the fact that you know his ah, the money that he made this offseason be.
He is a number one goaltender.
But, you know, he got you got paid, and I you know, that's something that they look at.
When you look at is numbers over the course of his career, Um, trying to pull that up right now.
But you know, he's averaged a career 9 19 save percentage edge to 46 goals against average.
And when when you compare that with the rest of the guys on this list, that doesn't really scream.
Number two goaltender in the league to me when you look at Bay Statistics, No.
Yeah, we need to look in the analytics.
We don't need to look at how plays head keeps moving after you make moving after making a safe we don't need to look at if he blue if these gates out of the blue ice on a breakaway.
I mean, we don't need toe look, a face, things.
We can just look at what guys are able to maintain on the game, the game basis on the energy on that.
And then you have a guy like Jordan Bennington, who most of the league and most of NHL do not look like Jordan Bennington for a lot of different reasons.
But he's number eight, and he didn't even play 1/3 of the sea.
Louis had a guy like out there for a long time, before they decided to put Bennington in Bennington.
Got what? There were a lot of different occasion playoff where Bennington allowed four or more goals.
I mean, a lot of different case, and I just don't think that that is very, Uh um, I think it's kind of insult to the guys right below him, especially Pecker renamed John Gibson.
Well, yeah, it's, you know, you see the live this and you can't I don't like waiting Rick Dees on these top lists because it's plea with somehow high.
Like with we did a top twenties list.
I could totally Dixie Jordan Bennington being in the top 20 more towards the late teens, maybe mid to late teens.
But I'm not putting him in my top 10 right now.
He showed me he has showed.
What is it? He's played 30 games, 30 some regular season games.
One more of them because Louis gotta stay close.
His offense finally got hot.
Yeah, and now let prior to playing with St Louis as I try to pull those.
But if I remember correctly, they wait because he played with Ah, a lot has been a lot of time in the NHL as that's his first in the age of 27 2012.
He saw 2015 16 season where he gave up one goal in 13 minutes.
So you can't really count that.
So his real taste of NHL play waas this year for two games. But you look back.
You know, when he played ah in the O h l with own sound attack from 2009 2 2013 Only 99069 32.
So we got better.
But it didn't start out well, Anyone from a 4 44 G 8 to 3 or 5 to 19 9 to 17 and was his best season.
And he's, um, if I did quick math, I would assume he's probably floating around a 9 14 9 53 in the minors.
Probably something about a two 45 to 60 bridge.
Like I said, those aren't top eight numbers.
He's I think he just picked up.
Um, you know, out of it is people say you're at a hot goalie.
I think Bennington got hot and blues rode him.
I'm and I'm really interested to see if that carries into this oven, and I don't I think it will.
Yep, and it's sort of going back.
Thio Rookies on the list A life Peterson was like 20th 19 or 20 completely disregarding guys like Viktor Arvidsson, who had averaged over averaged over point game Missile banged in 34 goals.
And I would love to be e bias about that.
I would love to send a Well, I I cut the Predators And why isn't he on the butt? I mean, we tried to be his unbiased possible on this show.
I mean, we ha take everybody here on this show.
So one week way we do it because Fair and John Gibson had a 9 21 save percentage.
His career savers incident 9 21 And Peck Arena is nine in team, so at all.
And there's no reason that many things should even be in the list at all.
Um, I personally I would have been bishop at number one.
I think that Bishop was the overall best goaltender in the this season.
Um, lead legal within nine with a 9 34 say percent.
Um, your thoughts.
He had seven and shut outs.
Yeah, I I did love watching Ben, but just real quick. I'm a monk.
Binning Tindall. Quick.
So we say how? Like I don't like putting rookie is on these lists.
But when you look, if you look at Harriman, you put him on that list.
I think I got look at Ryan Paling as three goals on three shots.
So he is the most efficient shooter in NHL history to this day that I'm So why? How come he's not list with the 100% shooting percentage? So a little, little stupid not around but lives we don't even know.
Hi with that task, obviously, But, uh, do you have to be to score in your first NHL game either? You are missing of Wayne Gretzky.
Beautiful 30 Bob.
But that was that was a fun game much, and I think because it was ah, it was whoever Montreal's broadcaster was, it was his last game.
So he got the call, uh, rhymed failings, first career game, first career hat trick and made some pretty decent.
Ah, pretty nice nugget of history.
But you're going back to Ben Bishop.
I watched every game he appeared in this year, and he he started 46 games because he was injured.
But, you know, no, I there were making in the season that that it was like our idea of these can happen.
They always happen.
But, you know, toward the second half the season, when he came back from injury, he was just lights out and there was a strand of time.
I want to say he was, like, seven.
Oh, and three or something like they're, like, 81 in two or something ridiculous like that.
And with ah allowing less than two goals per game, which, uh, is just phenomenal because And he was he finished the season with a 1.
95 goals allowed it average.
So second, leave.
Uh, you know Jordan Bennington, who played 14 less games.
Uh, but nonetheless I do.
I did love watching Bishop.
I do expect a little bit of regression from in this year.
Not nothing too drastic, but I don't think, uh, if he drops down to like a 99 27 say percen age with like a 2 12 to 15 goes out average, I think that's about right for him if he continues to play the level that he played at late in the season.
This is, uh, also putting this into perspective.
The Stars had fantastic, um, Goldie's aboard because Khudobin also put a 9 23 save percentage.
So it found the stars.
I'm not looking in the off season to try to get any gold tenders looking into drafting the gold centres, but what you think about Basil Escape being number? Do you think that's deserved? Do you think it's a speculation? He's ninth on the list and goals against average number one on the list and wins? Um, fourth tied for fourth with Robin Lehner and shove at shut outs? Um, Chris, what do you got? You know, it's one of those things where it's like you can make the argument for him there, and you could make an argument for, um, lower on the list.
Um, he's was the best goalie on the best team in the league throughout the regular season, And, um, you know he one the more games than any other going in the league while playing last thing, some of them.
But that's also we're just attributed to the team that Tampa Bay has up from.
But because you know what? It was pretty much Vasilevskiy.
Bishop Bishop was top three and the, uh, three main statistical categories of slot average.
And it was shut outs and Bess Levski wasn't, um, top three.
And all of them, I think he was top and maybe a couple of them, But he was, you know, he led the league and went, and I guess that was the stat that the committee was looking for.
But I have wanted always made this little joke.
When the argument was always going around.
I was like, You see Tampa Bay one games, their offense scored more than the other team.
The Dow Stars one games because Ben Bishop allowed less goals.
And the other guy? Yeah, that's right.
And you know, I may be the committee felt bad for the Lightning for winning out the regular season and then getting swept.
Maybe it just felt bad. Give him from something.
You know what I mean? Just like a handout.
Um, maybe that's the reason we don't really know.
We're not on the but I definitely agree that Bishop should have, uh, then at least on top, too, if not number one.
I just think that he was the most consistent, solid goaltender across the league.
And, um, you know, looking at other names on the list.
I think that hope he should have been ranked a little bit higher.
I definitely pack origination.
Have been ranked a little bit higher.
Um, to corral was lights out, party the latter half of the 2019 season.
Um, you know, I think Fleury is right where he belongs in the mix.
Didn't do anything.
They're over the season.
But I mean, he was He was the flower.
He was solid and goaltender.
But the biggest surprise to me this year was John Gibson.
Ah, it's near criminal that John Gibson is only 10th on this list because when you look at what he did this year, you don't even look at his numbers.
If you watch the 1st 20 games at the Anaheim Ducks played this year, it was all John gifts all.
John like they probably start way worse than they dio.
If Gibson is not there going And, you know, even with playing on that Anaheim theme that was just near atrocious watch, they mean he still put up 9 17 save percentage, only 2.
84 goals per game.
And, you know, at times he just he did all he can.
He's face in 40 45 shots a game.
And when you're doing that, you're bound to let a few slip.
And you can't really blame anyone except the team in front of him.
Yep, the the highest point getter on Ducks last year was Ryan gets laughed, plated 67 games and thorough up 48 points.
Nobody else reached over 48 points.
Highest goal getter was Jack himself a bird with 24.
I mean, that is a subpar average team.
Um, it on a watch.
Like watching a and a guilty man.
I mean, Gibson was the team.
It's easy to, um, say that, uh, you know, the offense was sputtering and they just couldn't get, uh, any gold support, right? Because the argument with lighting is that they scored and, uh, too many goals.
And they have ah, average goaltender, Right? But you can make that argument about Vassil sp, but you can't make the argument about Gibson Gibson.
Well, lights out would would you believe me if I told you that this was the, uh, one of the word one? Because Gibson's been league six years.
Um, what do you believe if I told you that this is the highest? His goal out average has been all year.
They're all season all his career.
Uh, I believe that.
Are you kidding it? Let's see when you look at 2013. 20.
Okay, so he's a career over his sixties, and he's played 236 games in the NHL.
His safe percentages, a 9 21 And he's allowed 2.
42 goals per game throughout those 236 games.
His first season, he only played three games.
He won all three.
Um, then, in 2014 2015 he played 23 games in his age, 21 season.
That was his second worst year of Ah, 9 14 and a 2 60 And then you look at 15 16.
He went 90 with a 2.
The Jennings Trophy that year finished seventh and called their voting and seventh in the vez know how.
Only seven he's Ah, he was all made the all star team didn't make the All Star team.
He was six and all star voting for, uh, the 16 17.
Or maybe you did make the officer team anyway.
He was in the 16 17 season, played 52 games games and when 24 to 22 the last season.
60 games, 9 26 to 43.
And then the last season, 58 games, 9 17 with the 2 84 So what looked like his best season that we heard some of his best games of hockey is played was his worst season statistically.
And I can't process that through my head right now.
Like I saw this debt and I it was okay.
You know, he, uh, he is still one of the more overlooked goaltender's in the lead.
Um, he's, uh, comparable to, um, Mattias ek home.
And they're still not general respect for John Gibson.
And I think it's due to the TV plays.
What do you think? Yeah, I definitely think that's probably, um, something that attribute it to that because Anna Huynh is ah, team that hasn't been very relevant.
Um, and a number of years and you know, that's, uh, being the goalie for Anaheim is probably someone gets overlooked.
Also, it really sucks because he's playing on the West Coast and not a lot of people stay up to see those games.
I bet if you put John Gibson on a team like new Jury Z or New York or any of the East Coast teams, he gets a lot more recognition because he's on TV more.
But nobody knows his name because he's plan on the West Coast at nine o'clock at night most Okay, well, here's an idea.
If you had to pinpoint a team where John Gibson could go and he would be the most successful, where would you go? Are you talking in terms, like, right now, a team that needs goalie or, uh, just just throw him in any system.
The team right now.
How does he do? Okay, he is clearly a is clearly a backbone can clearly be run.
And what team would need a golder? That is a backbone.
Um, Bishop and Renee are we kind of go back to the central take, uh, our goaltenders.
We can't say that because we're sports writers.
Uh, Asheville and Dallas fans take their goaltenders for Grant did, because you're not too concerned with three breakaway chances of game.
If I I am sitting in defense sitting in the stands as new band, I might be a little bit Maur apprehend.
Would he be a good fit in? Say he makes the Devils, who just picked up and All Star defenseman and the number one draft? Yeah, like when you when you were asking the question, New Jersey, what teams that popped into my head because they are a team that needs a goal? Because Cory Schneider, I don't think the answer for them right now.
MacKenzie Blackwood, they hope, is the answer.
But I don't think he's going to be.
And when you look at other team could potentially use a goalie.
I mean, you could throw up there at Edmondson, I think. Ico Koskinen.
But you wouldn't want to throw him in that Dumpster fire.
That is the city of Edmonton.
Um, absolutely not.
Honestly, I think if he threw John Gibson on any East Coast team, he could make that team instantly.
Better accept four teams that have pretty like aside from maybe Montreal, Boston, um, and and maybe Tampa Bay but threw him on any other team.
And he's he gets way more recognition.
He's probably talked about as a top three goaltender in the NHL.
Is supposed to be 10th.
Which a lot better than top 10 right? Would he fit on a team? Maybe Like the Islanders? What do you think about, um, his roster? Robin Leonard just signed in Chicago.
So, you know, it's kind of that's that's a little bit of a quandary, right? Uh, do not get me started about Robin Lehner, man.
Let me let me save my Robin Lerner take four.
We're in next couple weeks when the season gets closed, I plan on putting out, uh, an article on robin letter in the upcoming week.
So keep an eye on that on, uh, PC NHL's page just because I have, uh, I saw some things looked at some numbers, and I think there's a lot that people are overlooking when it comes to Robin Lehner and the New York Islanders.
Okay, but to continue off what? What you're saying about the islanders? I mean, I can kind of dipping my information, but if you give, um, John Gibson that same exact Islanders team.
I think they make it past.
They make it past round two.
Ah, around three.
And I think you could even make a case for them that they probably might have made it all to Stanley Cup because just the type of player that John Gibson is a goalie of his caliber with the defense that the New York Islanders have, Um, because they played a very defensive game.
Dallas, like similar Dallas Dallas bought into playing defensive system, and that's why they flourish.
The Islanders bought into playing a defensive system, and that's why they were successful.
John Gibson is way better going than Robin Lehner.
And so when you put a better goalie in that situation, that team comes a heck of a lot better.
And it's not even close.
Yep, you got like Josh Bailey, Matthew Bars, Um, even Anders Lee.
They put great point totals and the regular season.
So maybe, like what you're saying with a better gold sender, Uh, they do a lot better and votes way.
Want to apologise? Another.
We're playing out dream scenarios in which, uh, fantastic goaltenders go to, uh less than party teams.
But You know, right now, we're analyzing a top 10 go league list that the NHL network put out.
We're talking about guys who have not signed contract yet.
We do not have a lot of material to work with, so we kind of have to make our own material in a way.
Um, and hopefully when the season gets kicked up here in about two weeks, then, uh, we'll have some great things to talk about in terms of training camp, in terms of line shuffling will have a lot more to talk about for the Central Division.
Kristen, that will, um, the other night.
Chris, I, uh I've pretty much exhausted everything I wanted.
Say, this is how effective John Gibson is.
This is my favorite, John.
Um, I will always reminisce about that 2016 2017 playoff run that the natural Predators had.
They were playing the Anaheim Ducks, and Gibson was the first goaltender to stun the Predators in Bastogne Arena.
They had gone under feet, add on home ice until they and then Gibson got hurt by and they end up in Game five games.
