00:00:00
I've ever made.
00:00:01
Junkie radio video style goes Just got a good confirmation from an upcoming guests as well.
00:00:06
We'll tell you all about where we re side today.
00:00:09
We also have a fantastic guests on on this show.
00:00:13
Uh, it's John EC, the UFC play by play commentator.
00:00:17
He'll be joining us in about half an hour.
00:00:20
And, of course, there'll be lots of talk about on today's show.
00:00:23
Ah, including, you know, some of the latest news out there like Jeffrey Neil, Jeff Neal.
00:00:29
He wants to fight Michael Kiesa are.
00:00:32
But Kiesa wants nothing to do with Tyrone Woodley.
00:00:36
And, um so you know I'm throwing out here.
00:00:41
Jeff Feel wants Kiesa.
00:00:42
Yes, it doesn't want anything to do with Jeff Neal, however.
00:00:45
Hey, does want Tyron Wooden.
00:00:47
And, of course, Tyron Woodley said, Hey, look, I'm in a position to call anybody out, so I just want to fights by the end of 2020.
00:00:53
I love the way things are starting to have been welterweight.
00:00:56
I love the way things are going to start to heat up at lightweight because in lightweight Dustin Poi defeated and hooker, and so that starts to unclog that little mess. All right.
00:01:08
McGregor Still retired Jon Kavanaugh, as coach, even said so.
00:01:10
He said he sounds retired to be in until he 100 tires.
00:01:14
That's just the way he rolls.
00:01:16
Uh, Tony Ferguson, of course.
00:01:18
Active training again, uh, doing great stuff with kids, which is another little side story made a kids which can't come true with a one hour training session.
00:01:29
So those are just two divisions that are popping, Of course.
00:01:31
Got Fight Island about 10 days away, and we're gonna have a lot of great fights.
00:01:36
There are any Celeste just gave birth or just announce that she's pregnant.
00:01:41
She's gonna give birth around the time of our birthdays, she said September 28 is when the son or daughter will arrive.
00:01:47
So I guess she hasn't taken the time or doesn't want to know what the *** is gonna be.
00:01:53
So it's gonna be a fun show.
00:01:54
Of course, you can participate with questions or comments here on SportsCastr, just like we do.
00:01:58
Everyone is a we'll be here all the ones these noon Eastern 9 a.
00:02:02
m.
00:02:04
Pacific and with John Annik, You know, that guy's just taking it to another level man.
00:02:09
He is awesome.
00:02:10
So those a great fight book are great booking here.
00:02:15
Guest booking on sedation? Yeah, he's gonna be a lot of fun.
00:02:19
And, uh, the world in the May Awards Those came out today.
00:02:22
I saw that the nominations and I went pretty well for him.
00:02:26
A junkie. In fact, I already saw that.
00:02:28
Uh, we got one vote that's already coming on behalf of everybody. Junkie.
00:02:32
I said, Did you go through all of the categories here? Yeah.
00:02:35
All right.
00:02:36
Some of the other ones.
00:02:37
One good from a junkie.
00:02:38
And let's start with hockey first for one of them, a junkie got nominated, which is great.
00:02:42
Um, but also John Morgan and my arm.
00:02:46
Oh, cool Botham.
00:02:47
Nice.
00:02:48
I hate that they're both Coney against each other.
00:02:50
Uh, yeah, it is.
00:02:52
I guess I'd rather have that than than neither one.
00:02:55
They're so good stuff.
00:02:57
Congratulations to both guys who are their opponents.
00:03:00
I have to go through it one more time, but I want to say was brought Takamoto Aerial ho on you.
00:03:06
Measure those the hard Deanna.
00:03:09
There probably was 1/5 1 that's slipped in there.
00:03:12
There you go.
00:03:13
Five deep Did you notice that hooker and coitus fighting off for part of the year.
00:03:18
So what the world of a man works it this year was they went on an 18 month stretch.
00:03:24
It's all of 2019 and up until June 30th of 2020.
00:03:31
Now I get it.
00:03:33
They weren't able tohave their awards like they normally do, which is in July.
00:03:38
And this year was in take place July A during international fighting.
00:03:41
But because of the pandemic, there is no international fire week.
00:03:45
There is no gathering groups, you know, like an award show already like that.
00:03:49
So I get that.
00:03:50
That was the right call.
00:03:51
So they're looking the book, the event sometime in October.
00:03:54
But I still don't understand why it's going to reflect all the way to the mid year.
00:03:58
I guess they don't want to stand there on October and go remember almost a year and 1/2 ago with someone so one or someone so knocked out.
00:04:06
So on.
00:04:07
So here there were, Lord.
00:04:08
But you know what? I think everyone in the audience could just stomach that and go. Yeah, yeah. Cool.
00:04:13
Go up and get your award.
00:04:14
rather than focus on the fact that in October 2020 we're rewarding someone from knockout in January 2019.
00:04:21
So now my question would be, Well, what's gonna happen the next time is just gonna be another block of 18 months, cause I imagine International five Week will be thinking on more than 2021 right where we've gotta win this war against Tobin. 19 regulars.
00:04:37
Yeah, I feel like the cry just reset the whole thing.
00:04:40
I don't know and be often just dio a little bit with the 2020 awards.
00:04:45
Just be July 1 to December 31 that's it, I would imagine.
00:04:50
Well, I want to talk to Rob Hewitt.
00:04:54
That's the love International Fight Week.
00:04:56
They love that he is the editor and owner off.
00:05:01
Um well, fighters only magazine, which produces the world, then won many awards.
00:05:07
And honestly, that award show is probably the show, you know, in our in our, uh, in our industry.
00:05:16
So everybody that gets an award from there, you know, this probably displays there's you guys have probably seen earning one of our Five World in many awards for best media source uh, you know, we've been in our studio of sometimes we feature him here right now.
00:05:33
We got our bubble heads from MME bobblehead dot com, but ah, yeah, I mean, just the other day and we were talking a bird walks and he had hiss when Brady on his in the back.
00:05:44
His would have been a contributor is what he came out for one year.
00:05:49
I don't remember. What.
00:05:51
It wasn't lifetime.
00:05:52
Yeah, lifetime achievement like this is what it is.
00:05:54
His this probably display.
00:05:56
It's a nice It's a really, really nice trophy.
00:05:59
So good stuff there.
00:06:00
Uh, going back to the batch ups.
00:06:03
Brian Ortega still wants a piece of the hungry.
00:06:06
If I was supposed to happen about six months ago, he's saying, Signed the dotted line.
00:06:10
Uh, design.
00:06:11
We told them steak home.
00:06:14
I like that.
00:06:15
Funny.
00:06:16
It's like saying, been kind of relax.
00:06:17
Everybody says relax or or whatever.
00:06:20
He just told him, Stay call.
00:06:22
That's what I fight.
00:06:23
That just I mean, after what happened with the, uh, the Korean rapper, whatever.
00:06:31
I mean, you could tell that really ****ed off the Koreans on me.
00:06:33
It's a buy that's gonna happen.
00:06:34
And I can't wait for it.
00:06:36
But I like the Korean zombie swag.
00:06:38
I say that he had to take that time off for the military and never understood that.
00:06:42
I just feel like couldn't the government had said, Look, we get everybody has to do it.
00:06:48
We're just gonna move his to the end of the career because you see what, like John Wiley does for China, like it motivates the people. It's a hero.
00:06:57
Why take that away from them? Nobody saying he can't do the military service.
00:07:02
Just let me do it at the end of his career.
00:07:04
Yeah, I agree.
00:07:05
Why take away those years from nothing I can think of is maybe they need.
00:07:11
Maybe their ages are 18 to 35 zombie ism final return before them, but I think they could still find an administrative role.
00:07:19
You know, um, so you might not meet the physical demands and it Plus, we're talking about the zombie.
00:07:24
That's part of guy who will probably fit, you know, at age 50 that most 25 year olds, honestly, um, but you know, of course, your vision and other things that you know you may not hit the certain bars that they're looking for.
00:07:39
That's all I can think of.
00:07:40
But I think they could have found I think they could make it a certain exemption.
00:07:44
Not my heel spurs, but so sort of exception.
00:07:48
Like Go said, We're not saying you're bypassing.
00:07:51
You know what South Korea has established.
00:07:54
You're basically just dealing.
00:07:56
Van took away three years when he lost, although, like in 2013 he didn't even come back until 2017.
00:08:02
I think it took a like an extra year.
00:08:04
Uh, but since then he's been he's been great.
00:08:08
Everything about when I ran into him at the Luxor.
00:08:11
No, I wanted to relate to him.
00:08:14
Ah, I don't know.
00:08:18
This is dumb on my part.
00:08:20
I just started was cool that Anthony Bourdain thought he was cool after the board ends.
00:08:26
A big star was a big star.
00:08:29
He's no longer with us.
00:08:31
I think the one year anniversary of his passing just took place and and a boarding came to our studio to meet the Koreans on Back in, I had to guess 2009 or 10.
00:08:49
Only 100 was it? You see? Wonder what's up.
00:08:52
Okay, so It's 2009 now.
00:08:55
The boarding that passed away in 2019 was obviously an even bigger star.
00:09:00
But he was still well going back there.
00:09:03
And he was married to a lady.
00:09:06
Levering was Octavia, who was his ex, became his ex wife.
00:09:11
But this lady Octavia love jiu jitsu.
00:09:16
She trained at hands of racist Jim.
00:09:18
She loved you. Jitsu and love.
00:09:20
They remain.
00:09:21
That's why when you hear hens of racy talk about Bourdain and other stuff aboard a ordain learned the loved agency, he actually trained more.
00:09:30
Dane was able to afford the private lessons, so he was able to fast track.
00:09:35
Now I'm not sure what belting made it to.
00:09:37
I don't think he trained it long enough to be brown and black.
00:09:41
He may have reached purple or blue or something, but he Drollet the Gracie spare with that.
00:09:45
Sorry, Ds is and Donna her.
00:09:47
He got he got the privates and I'm not eating on that.
00:09:51
I mean, if you can afford it, go for it, you know? But they love them.
00:09:55
And he was, of course, a celebrity who became even bigger from 2009 when we met him 2 2019 with He took his own life.
00:10:03
And anyway, so they are in town for UFC 100 she was a reader of the enemy junkie website and saw that on the primetime show on the primetime memory Jackie radio show.
00:10:20
That night we had a list of guests that were lined up.
00:10:23
One of them was the Korean zombie, and they wanted to come meet him.
00:10:27
So they sat in other sports book, which is basically the front of our studio, the Mandalay based sports book.
00:10:34
They sat there for about a good hour, kind of kept to themselves.
00:10:39
People recognize them.
00:10:41
Um, we, uh, made an attempt, I believe, though, did you were on Did he said, Well, first of all, you know, nice to meet you in a lot, but he's That's when he told you wanted to make the zombie zombie, and he didn't want create a But he He said he was kind of nervous a little bit and that he didn't want to ruin our show, and I didn't know who he was back then, But people kept telling us, You have to go out there and get you have to, and it was like I was pretty sure if I didn't know he was.
00:11:16
I thought you probably nobody was use, you know, like a popular chef on TV.
00:11:20
It's not really what you watch, and I merrily watch.
00:11:23
It would be tough to kind of bring by way was do the wife on.
00:11:27
And so um yeah, we finally saw All right, we went out there and we talked.
00:11:32
I talked him for a little bit, and that's what he said.
00:11:35
He start.
00:11:36
But the sad thing is, a zombie shut up probably 10 minutes after he left.
00:11:39
Right and Zombie was really, really, really they and we stayed because we wanted to have the zombie on.
00:11:46
But our even our show was supposed to end on.
00:11:50
We stayed because we kept getting text.
00:11:52
You'll be there, he'll be there.
00:11:53
He'll be there.
00:11:55
They waited for an hour, but I think they have dinner plans and, uh so yeah, yeah, So now let's fast forward.
00:12:03
10 and 1/2 years later, I'm at the New York New York.
00:12:09
Sorry, not the Luxor.
00:12:10
And I wanted to share that story with two Koreans on because it stopped there, might be a chance that he loves food and my noble boarding waas But it's kind of like you know how it's pretty cool to find out the rock is your friend or, um maybe I don't know.
00:12:27
Uh, Russell Crowe are Snoop Dog.
00:12:30
What? That whatever Pick us a lead.
00:12:31
You cry over anything that she Charlie's there.
00:12:34
You know that the other day somebody Halle Berry texted Dana White the toe when I was young, like everyone.
00:12:40
Yeah, yeah, I am a fan of that guy.
00:12:42
Can't wait for the next five minutes.
00:12:44
That's cool thing.
00:12:45
And so I thought that's maybe it was a distant chance that he might dig that.
00:12:51
So he's walking away and I go be And it turns around, uh, because I couldn't remember the Times Chance song We always call Magorium's on B R T K Z.
00:13:03
So he's got Zombie and I had a few drinks, so he turns around and I waive it.
00:13:08
I'm giving a friendly wave.
00:13:09
I didn't go come here or nothing, and I start walking to him and he weighs back and I go, I want to tell you something and he goes, okay, and I said uh, do you know Anthony Bourdain is and the girls? But it was like I didn't even understand the word you just said, you know, cycled.
00:13:30
So I think I saw him with.
00:13:31
But you didn't understand what I what? I just said it to go.
00:13:34
Sorry.
00:13:35
And I go So famous person is a fan of you.
00:13:41
So I start putting it together is talking really slow.
00:13:45
And so we established Oh, wow.
00:13:48
You know, like he I think he was like, Thank you.
00:13:50
That's nice to know.
00:13:51
Very kind of you, but I would much rather be with my friends right now was the vibe that I got, but, um, he I don't know, he was so nice and so friendly, but I don't think you give two ****s about what I was saying.
00:14:07
However, I still feel like it's part of my mission to at least tell someone in his entourage who understands with the boarding was just a really that still waiting for an hour just to meet of Dr Kim.
00:14:21
Yeah.
00:14:22
You could translate that.
00:14:23
Yeah, Dr. Kim.
00:14:25
So anyway, uh, yeah.
00:14:28
So then he shook my hand one week before Kobe 19 blew up we're shaking hands.
00:14:34
And then he, uh he took off, joined this party, and then I took off from there with Norman, Indiana, to the newest Emery junkies.
00:14:43
So, anyway, uh, yeah, or taking the zombie make that fight for cardinal out or, you know, or take is a year and 1/2 removed from his title shop.
00:14:53
That means pretty soon at six months, I might at the polling from the ranking, you can't just be enacted for two years.
00:14:58
We take that into consideration.
00:15:00
A contract dispute a, uh, you know, personal time.
00:15:04
Like if if if you are a female in, you're expecting a baby like Ariana, Celeste is expecting a baby, um, injuries.
00:15:14
You know, sometimes there's an injury and there's a setback.
00:15:17
You know, the worst injuries will usually keep you out of nine months, maybe a year.
00:15:21
Uh, let's just say there's a setback.
00:15:23
Well, we account for that.
00:15:24
You'll stay in our rankings for two years, but the two year mark, that's it.
00:15:29
And I know or take a hard one.
00:15:31
But I think it was so.
00:15:32
It wasn't serious enough that he elected to bypass the surgery, so he's got to get cracking.
00:15:38
I mean, now is the time to slip in.
00:15:40
If you think about it.
00:15:41
Vulcan off, See? Versus all the way.
00:15:42
That's like, Okay, it's gonna be a great fight, cause featherweights don't suck.
00:15:46
Let's just put an awesome fights.
00:15:48
Well, what's next? I still haven't heard much out of this Evite camp.
00:15:52
You know, uh, so zombie Antarctica could definitely have the hand.
00:15:57
And we're hearing Are Rodriguez like, why are some of these guys like, kind of relax? And that's why Calvin Caterers Danny is actually becoming a bigger fight than we all think of this.
00:16:06
We got to see the way fight and win plays out, right? Who is fighters were gonna go that way.
00:16:11
I know there's a guy like like you're here.
00:16:14
I would even qualify Coming from Mexico, me staying in the state, he stays allowing the states.
00:16:20
So I'm pretty sure he would have been OK.
00:16:23
I mean, I guess the only thing we don't know is maybe Kobe 19 has just decimated a city or ah, family.
00:16:32
You know, one of these fighters, I guess we give them the benefit of the doubt.
00:16:35
That could be a situation that we're not accounting for um, but I If you look at your year, right, Jesus record.
00:16:44
I don't have it handy, but he's somebody who are.
00:16:47
I know I know this one because of the rankings.
00:16:49
I think he's like from 2015 to 2018 of these only following wants every year.
00:16:53
So I do you build up any momentum and do you do any of these fighters regret that seriously, like I, uh, I Gilbert Burns is a perfect example of I'm fighting.
00:17:08
I'm healthy, I'm streaking, I'm hot.
00:17:10
Let's go, Let's go, let's go! And he's gonna figure out the money later if he wins the title.
00:17:16
You know what? He's putting himself in a position to headline to.
00:17:21
Uh, so we have mind his own show versus with me And I was in a headline as a challenger to No Tyron Woodley.
00:17:29
You know, there's a roll, a dice.
00:17:30
I respect Manz.
00:17:31
It all stands.
00:17:32
I respect John Jones slams.
00:17:34
But remember, you can't own wind the clock.
00:17:38
You can't be 35 again or whatever age they I think nozzles 35 Jones, 32.
00:17:44
So if they don't like that whole year, you just can't have, you know, those are frying years.
00:17:51
I remember model when he was 27 told me that I think at age 27 he was complaining that he wasn't getting booked and he says, I can't get that age back.
00:17:59
I can't get that number back And it's so true.
00:18:03
So Oh, you know, I don't know what I want to figure out The recipe for a fighter that has the skills and talent to be a member of the US see how they can get the most out of their career so that at the end of their due to the career, they can kind of enjoy it comfortably in retirement.
00:18:22
Versus you know, I'm going to go out there and hustle down another job.
00:18:26
And there's nothing wrong with that, by the way, can make an investment or whatever, but you should have something to show for broken bones and concussions.
00:18:33
And you know, the terrible hips and knees and digits that you're gonna have the rest your life, the question from Mark Shot Goes and G.
00:18:44
If you could get credential than sponsored to cover the UFC and Abu Dhabi, would you go with all these travel bans and people avoiding Americans like the plague.
00:18:55
I'd be nervous to leave American soil to answer your question there.
00:18:59
Onley giving credentials toe one person per outlet.
00:19:03
Our guys John Morgan that you were sending out.
00:19:05
But they did offer, um and would we if we would have said yes.
00:19:11
I mean, if they didn't have the rule, just one.
00:19:14
I definitely wouldn't know when.
00:19:17
Uh, I don't want to leave the U. S.
00:19:20
With the way things are right now.
00:19:22
I don't want to get stuck on Fire Island for however long you have to be there.
00:19:25
Because once you're on Fire Island, there's only so many flights that go and come back.
00:19:29
So it's not like, all right, my fights over, I'm coming room.
00:19:32
You got to stay there for a while, so I don't wanna get stuck out there with everything going on.
00:19:37
And you see, the UFC apex just helped three events, and we didn't go to those either.
00:19:43
And that's literally 10 minutes from our house.
00:19:46
So we're just kind of waiting things out.
00:19:49
I think today I e feel safe.
00:19:52
You would go to find Yeah, um, they, uh it looks like the creative.
00:19:58
You look at the latest rendering and videos they've created, like a soul, Um, just for everybody.
00:20:07
And but, for example, Joan flies out Friday and he's getting tested Thursday.
00:20:14
So just to get on the plane, I was, So they want to be sure there and then I'm sure about the quarantine himself for from the time he test still tiny flies.
00:20:23
And then I believe it's chartered flights away there.
00:20:28
But like he was telling us, that part of the world, man, there's some beautiful hotels.
00:20:33
I'm sure that they're gonna be in some luxurious, safe spot there, and that is an ally of the United States where they're gonna be in Abu Dhabi.
00:20:41
So in that regards, as far as, like, acts in America, no.
00:20:47
Could there be some troubles? I don't think they'd be any Those types of troubles not getting stuck.
00:20:51
Um, what do you mean? Like an immigration thing is, you never know with what What things happen out here.
00:20:58
I don't know.
00:20:59
Something else happens really bad.
00:21:01
I just don't want to get stuck there.
00:21:03
The travel on to go through airports, even though it's chartered like you can even get me to go to Mandalay Bay.
00:21:10
How are you gonna get me to go through a airport and all that stuff like I'm stand up like that? So it's more of a healthy.
00:21:16
Yeah. Okay.
00:21:17
Not on immigration.
00:21:19
No. Okay. Yeah.
00:21:20
Yeah. For me, it would be the same thing.
00:21:23
Uh, our mom is staying with us, starting their own.
00:21:25
She's but women don't like to get away their age, but I'm 50 trying to do the math there.
00:21:32
Um, so I I would be scared of infecting her.
00:21:39
That's my stance.
00:21:41
Okay, So John Annex going to join us in about nine minutes.
00:21:45
We'll talk to him about everything that's going on, including those four title fights coming up here.
00:21:51
Four events in 15 days, The first about your city 51 on July 11 as three title fights.
00:21:58
Then there's a When is the show before we get to the following Saturday, which has a title fight.
00:22:07
One the vacant title fight.
00:22:10
And then we get to the last event, which is Robert Witcover's there.
00:22:13
Until so no title fight.
00:22:14
Their 25th no title fight on the 15 but the 11th in the 18th.
00:22:19
There's four title fights, and again it goes.
00:22:21
Three on the 11th and one in the 83 on the 11th are tomorrow's month.
00:22:27
He defends versus Gilberts.
00:22:29
Then you got Alexander.
00:22:30
Will Karnowski defending it gets, uh, Max Holloway.
00:22:35
And then you got the vacant bantamweight title over grabs.
00:22:39
Anderson, who does retired, remember? So it's the title's vacant now.
00:22:43
Peter Yang versus Josie, although, uh, and repeating on the 18th Davis of Figueredo and just about every day is going to run it back for the vacant title there.
00:22:54
It's been vacant since any certain? No, uh, left that one behind to what was said Anderson, who left a mess.
00:23:01
But he was courteous enough to say, I'm done.
00:23:04
You guys figure it out.
00:23:05
I think I remember a longer time with Connor.
00:23:07
Didn't commenting on the one for about a year with the UFC.
00:23:11
Finally said enough.
00:23:13
Um, but yeah, I think he'll be back as well.
00:23:17
And I like that he's shooting for the Stars vs Alexander Ball Karnowski.
00:23:21
That would be pretty historic.
00:23:23
There's no shame in losing to someone to wait crosses above you.
00:23:27
Um, to be fair out, Max.
00:23:31
All they could be Alex will karnowski, you know, then they would be 11 And because these other featherweights are putting any type of pressure, I could see that maybe you were doing running the trilogy.
00:23:43
The spikes exciting right now on Maxwell's.
00:23:45
They might just run the trilogy running.
00:23:47
Yeah, right away before bowl Koreans on me.
00:23:49
You know he's not signing.
00:23:51
He's taking it, telling us to stay calm or take us taken 18 months off.
00:23:55
Um, e G and Cater have a chance to impress.
00:23:59
You know, one of those one of those guys and prices and grabs on Mike and demands You know, what's There's the Maybe they can get in there.
00:24:07
It's gotta be.
00:24:08
Nobody's gonna Rexnord a different Max Holloway.
00:24:11
That can't be the same one.
00:24:12
I should have been that first bite.
00:24:13
The same thing's gonna happen at that.
00:24:15
Same dashes up.
00:24:16
So now we got to see.
00:24:17
Is Max capable of making adjustments in his games, not going out and trying to be tougher than the other guy.
00:24:24
This is one where he's gonna have to play a little chest on its gets going to get interesting.
00:24:30
Yeah, Masses game hasn't changed too much.
00:24:34
It's a fact, Yeah, it is very effective.
00:24:37
Yeah, there's not too many people that can kind of beat him at his own game, but Alex was pretty definitive.
00:24:44
That's why I didn't think they needed to run it back.
00:24:46
But again, Look, I maybe not crapping on the featherweight division because it's stacked.
00:24:52
Let me tell you something.
00:24:53
We go wanted 15 at USA Today and I'm a junkie.
00:24:57
The rankings that we provide.
00:24:58
Then we have three killers at honorable mention and trust me just outside of that group.
00:25:04
If I about another 5 10 athletes there, there ready to jump in there like a Danny get about a year ago, Danny, it wasn't right.
00:25:11
And boom, look where he's at now.
00:25:13
We're talking about him for Scalia. Cater.
00:25:15
So, yeah, I mean, it's a killer killer division anyway, um, with John, you know, it's been a while since we talked to him, but that guy's been a trooper for the company.
00:25:28
But he also had some pretty well designer deserved time off during the pandemic.
00:25:33
So I want to see how we use that time.
00:25:36
Of course, we have the N B A playoffs coming up.
00:25:39
Sure what I was saying that, Um well, where does Boston recited the Celtics? Do you know, I'm not really sure.
00:25:46
Um, yeah, I know what the later like a see.
00:25:50
Here's the thing, though.
00:25:52
Our good friend Ray and I'm gonna mean probably Cher's last name.
00:25:56
I'm gonna guess its roost.
00:25:58
He is from DP and sports talk.
00:26:00
He's into Come on and ask the last question during the Annick interview.
00:26:03
But his channel covers the latest and greatest stories and games surrounding the New England Patriots.
00:26:09
And I don't know very many Patriots fans that aren't self expense.
00:26:13
And John, is there a place in the plants in the East? No, no, no, no.
00:26:17
I guess these are the overall right.
00:26:19
In Sicily, they were in third in the East, The Eastern Conference.
00:26:24
It goes the box under actors than the Celtics are.
00:26:29
The is the NBA's finishing out.
00:26:31
The rainy season is just starting a platform.
00:26:33
I don't feel like a couple games that aren't there Like a couple teams that need to play in.
00:26:38
There's something I think there's a few before they get the the thing.
00:26:43
Don't Yeah.
00:26:44
All right. Good.
00:26:46
Um, well, I got the standing here and John is a huge fan of all the New England sports, so we'll have a little bit of fun with that.
00:26:56
We'll have a little bit of phone with all these fight cards coming up at Yas Island and, of course, the outstanding career he's card from.
00:27:03
So I retweeted earlier.
00:27:05
This is the hour Michael's of our sport.
00:27:08
I wanna ask him, first of all, if he knows what I'm alluding to, uh, you know, Al Michaels has been tremendous in the world of sports.
00:27:17
Ah, you know, I would say primarily is a play by play guy.
00:27:22
But you know, I mean, this guy's been like he's done hosting duties and things like that.
00:27:27
But there's one thing I was appreciated from Al Michaels any time he was ever doing, ah, Monday night or whatever, and, uh, I think John's been instrumental with our sport, you know, bringing light to a certain what should we call a certain topic? No, not a topic.
00:27:56
A certain, uh, side show.
00:27:59
Now that's actually one of if I wish I had is vocabulary.
00:28:02
But he'll know what I'm talking about.
00:28:04
What? It shows that there's a passing, but issuing.
00:28:06
Yeah, that's when he popped.
00:28:07
It has heard the Celtics and also let me jump in there a little early.
00:28:11
But guys, people are giving me compliments.
00:28:13
Allyson John.
00:28:14
Actions? Yeah.
00:28:16
All right.
00:28:17
Let's bring him on the one and only John Attic.
00:28:21
Go on.
00:28:22
Yes, always a pleasure.
00:28:25
Boys were 120 seconds early, So you heard a little bit of the chat.
00:28:32
Do you know why I called you the money? The Al Michaels of our sport wanna re tweet about two hours ago? Wow, man, that's Ah, I know you've listened to a lot of play by play guys, so Ah, that means a lot to me.
00:28:45
You know, somebody mentioned me in the same sentence with Vin Scully and Chick Hearn, and I had to quickly let him know with respect that I will never be able to close the gap on those guys.
00:28:54
I put those guys on such a pedestal and rightfully so that while I appreciate any compliment about my orating skills or play by play skills, I'm not dumb enough.
00:29:06
Teoh not realize that there are levels to this game and I will never be on a Vin Scully level and That's okay.
00:29:11
I wouldn't say never.
00:29:13
But I would agree with you that right now.
00:29:15
Hey, look, you know, those guys put in the 50 years, so yeah, let's keep it, riel.
00:29:19
But I would never I would not.
00:29:21
When it comes to you, I wouldn't say never about anything.
00:29:23
Because I'm telling you, what you've done in our sport has been tremendous.
00:29:27
And, um so our Michael's basically he gave me Ah, a reference there to my age.
00:29:34
You've seen a lot of play by play, Guys, I was miserable.
00:29:36
That's an old last Full right.
00:29:37
You're not big, but I have seen a lot of play by play guys.
00:29:41
But one thing I always appreciate all Michael's waas on Monday Night football.
00:29:46
He would always say, you know, if the game was like 28 Teoh 19.
00:29:51
I don't know why I picked that number Randall score, but then he'd say, Well, if he gets this first down, is gonna make a lot of people back West west happy.
00:29:59
It was a reference to gambling, but he was always really kept it subtle.
00:30:03
You know what I mean? And everybody that either gambled or was on either side of it would kind of chuckled at the bar, you know, because we imagine that our probably either, you know, had something on it to, you know, maybe a friendly state bad.
00:30:16
I'm sure you can participate in we give them against Exactly and gone.
00:30:21
Started doing that years ago on and and And look how big it's become and you got fantasy sports.
00:30:27
You got actual gambling and of course, us being at the Mandalay Bay, we see people back and forth all the time, people chatting about fights and And how about the $37,000 bet this past weekend? Unbelievable.
00:30:39
Look, didn't look great early, but that's a hit as far as we're all concerned.
00:30:43
But yeah, man.
00:30:44
I mean, you guys know cause you know me well, that I leaned into the gambling stuff pretty early on, in some part because it comes naturally to me.
00:30:52
I've literally been betting on sports almost every day since 1996 when I was 18 year old kid doing $10.
00:31:00
3 like baseball parlance, right? So for me, it's always been another lens through which to look at the games.
00:31:06
I do think for Al Michaels is interesting because I don't know what percentage of his audience was betting on the games 25 years ago, but you guys would know better than me.
00:31:15
But what percentage off the viewers right now have action on the sporting events, especially in a global pandemic.
00:31:21
I would say a whole lot of them have some sort of action either with a friend or what we would call actual action.
00:31:28
So, uh, I've leaned into it, and certainly guys like Julian de Rosa give us a whole lot to talk about what happened in it.
00:31:34
Like plus 400 change.
00:31:37
Yeah, for sure.
00:31:38
Um, look, right now there's more states and where you condone it legally, Uh, 25 years ago, you had to actually get in your car and drive to the Mandalay Bay or wherever to make the actual play.
00:31:51
Now, even in this state, you can just get on the bed.
00:31:53
MGM happened.
00:31:54
Do it that way and look, let's not play dumb.
00:31:57
I think a lot of people are more open now about having a guy or whatever, right? No Costa Rica And plus it's worldwide down everybody, just a worldwide sport.
00:32:07
And there's people that have been punting, you know, since age 18.
00:32:10
You know, in the UK, in Asia and Australia everywhere.
00:32:15
It's crazy how many text messages I get now compared to six months ago asking for free plays, right? Everybody is betting on this because they're either sick of betting on Korean baseball or they're impatient for the NFL to start.
00:32:30
And if you don't feel like that in Korean baseball, this is much more, I think, digestible for a lot of people, right? It's on TV.
00:32:38
It's every Saturday night.
00:32:39
It's on ESPN, right? I mean, we've done a show essentially every Saturday night since May, not right, so it's very digestible for people.
00:32:47
Anger be pick a winner if you're not getting into round props and things like that.
00:32:51
So the appetite is healthy, to say the least.
00:32:54
And, uh, I do think it dovetails with the ratings you've seen.
00:32:57
We've done some pretty big numbers over the last several weeks, and I think what's most encouraging for me as a UFC commentator is that I think we're retaining these fans fans who tuned in May 9th for just 49 when there wasn't a whole lot to watch are still watching on June 27 if those people are still watching in September and October, when the NFL is up and running, then we've really done something.
00:33:18
So it remains to be seen.
00:33:20
But I am.
00:33:21
I am cautiously optimistic that we have.
00:33:23
We have swelled our fan base over the last two months.
00:33:26
John.
00:33:27
One thing we know about your play by play is your very meticulous in your preparation.
00:33:31
But let's talk a little bit about this era.
00:33:33
It's brought a lot of fighters that we didn't know before.
00:33:36
Guys that we all knew where beasts in the gym.
00:33:39
But now they're getting their opportunity because there's just room on these cards.
00:33:44
They have to fill your get your seeing all these new faces that you may have to go look at other organizations to get footage from here from coaches what they got to say.
00:33:52
So I imagine you have to put in a lot more work for these cards, for you talk about the difference of preparing for these cards compared to before coach, you always bring the great questions goes.
00:34:03
And I'll tell you, man, last week was tough, right? I think I prepped or voice, you know, six or seven flights that didn't happen.
00:34:10
You know Kyle Nelson out.
00:34:12
Daniel Pineda end.
00:34:13
So I voice from Daniel Pineda, Sean Woodson fight and then I'll do the Daniel Pineda fighter card only to have him pull out in Julian de Rosa.
00:34:19
Step in.
00:34:20
So it was a tough week.
00:34:22
I was actually thankful to be quarantined away from my kids so I could just keep turning and burning.
00:34:26
But it has been a challenge.
00:34:27
You get a guy like Jason Wit, who is 17 and five, who probably deserves to be in the UFC who's won four in a row.
00:34:35
And then I am soliciting film and opinions and trying to get as much information as I can about this guy who Onley flew to Las Vegas on Thursday night.
00:34:43
So it's a definite challenge.
00:34:45
I'm leaner on a guy like that in terms of information.
00:34:48
Then I would be on some other fighters.
00:34:50
But I guess Justin inconvenient truth of our business goes.
00:34:54
We're so conditioned to dealing with variables and challenges like this.
00:34:58
I mean, Amanda Nunes and Robert Whitaker have been unable to fight day of as headlining acts on a pay per view, so that's about as bad as it has ever gotten for me from a prep standpoint.
00:35:08
But, yeah, you just trying to be ahead of it so that when you do get a new fight, uh, it's not piling work on top of work.
00:35:14
But last week was forgettable for me in a lot of respects, and I'm not talking about the covert tests if you catch my drift, John.
00:35:22
Now there's no roar of the crowd.
00:35:24
There's It's almost like fighting in a library, which means that your voice not only carries the way it does on the broadcast, it carries through the theory.
00:35:34
Nha right the apex.
00:35:35
Wherever you're at, the fighters can hear you call play by play.
00:35:39
Was that a little strange in the beginning for you? Were you able to being the same motions as normal? Was that something that stuck in your head? Well, it's hard to just ignore it, right, because you have athletes who are reactionary and responding at times verbally to your commentary.
00:35:56
Jacksonville was crazy.
00:35:57
I mean, that's an experience that that Joe and Daniel and I will never forget because they were hearing our every word fast forward a few weeks, the UFC apex.
00:36:05
We have like hawking plexi glass, and that sort of shoves the audio back at us.
00:36:10
But that being said, they can still hear it.
00:36:12
There's still an echo.
00:36:14
Dustin Portier seemingly heard our every word was going back and forth with Michael visiting so again with an inconvenient truth of this climate and calling fights in an empty arena.
00:36:24
I remember one time open State prove got hit with what I thought was a huge right hand from Ben Rothwell, and I called it out and opens.
00:36:31
Kind of looked over as if to say, Come on, man, you know, barely grazed me.
00:36:34
So it is what it is.
00:36:36
There's nothing we could do about it.
00:36:38
You know, these headsets are a pretty powerful thing in terms of putting you in a tunnel and focusing on the job at hand, with cans on looking at the monitor.
00:36:46
It's very easy for me to not worry about what people may or may not be hearing, but I'll be front and center first in line with happiness.
00:36:55
When we get fans back to a more normal atmosphere, you know, we certainly feed off of that energy.
00:37:00
It's not a crutch for us.
00:37:02
We don't need it to succeed.
00:37:04
But I certainly can't wait till we have real crowd noise again.
00:37:09
All right, so we got through the wrong pom poms and everything.
00:37:13
Jargon, it s he's awesome.
00:37:15
Now that's bust his balls a little bit.
00:37:16
He lit into me on Twitter.
00:37:18
Um, well, friendly.
00:37:21
It was fun.
00:37:22
I took it, you know? Yeah.
00:37:24
I'm not one of those guys that says, Oh, yeah, Well, I spoke with your mom.
00:37:27
You know, about the easy stuff, right? Let's sit there and wait for my time.
00:37:33
I let it simmer.
00:37:34
I just had to shave. Johnny got me.
00:37:36
Yeah, we're talking about next Ross cough, you know? And that was one of the guys actually going back to.
00:37:42
Does this question that you You started doing some studying and you came across that interview that I did with them on the sign.
00:37:48
And I think I'm calling a rash comp, and he's actually Ross cough, all right? Didn't get it right this time.
00:37:53
It's rash cough, but is wash cop? Yeah, right.
00:37:58
So So I think I was saying rash pop, right So I'm like, OK, you got me Got me, you know, But I was just happy that he retweeted that those that interview for my 10 months ago on Max is a good kid.
00:38:09
And so then I'm watching.
00:38:11
And remember, it was the same car, you know, they're all just here.
00:38:14
But all of a sudden John Ethnic is doing an interview.
00:38:19
Yeah, with Justin, Jaymes and Digital, Just from Jesse James.
00:38:23
At the end, I called him Jesse James on the outro.
00:38:27
I had my Barb Han Shack moment, right as D. C.
00:38:32
There's nothing worse.
00:38:33
And I knew it was gonna happen at some point in time, right? The first time that I did post fight interviews was the first time I ever did a show January 20th 2012.
00:38:42
And I remember that night thinking as I go in there with the microphone.
00:38:46
All right, I'm here with your winner goes right for getting remain when you go to do the post fight interview.
00:38:52
It was my foremost fear on the first UFC line of then I did, and it took me eight years a late replacement, and I just had Jesse James in my head or whatever.
00:39:02
And I called him Jesse James instead of Justin Jaymes and apologized profusely.
00:39:06
The only worse thing that has happened to me honestly on the air is when I attributed a child a Corey Anderson.
00:39:12
That wasn't hiss that I said he had a 2.
00:39:13
5 year old son and he got off the air.
00:39:16
All these text messages from men and women being like, Dude, what the ****? We got a kid, you know? So, hey, man, live TV.
00:39:23
But I'm glad he brought it to everybody's attention.
00:39:25
And now, but it is kind of cool right to see that.
00:39:28
Oh, ****.
00:39:29
Max Rushkoff's on the cord and I had in a sauna with you watching your interview with him from 10 months ago because I went down a Max Rushkoff rabbit hole.
00:39:38
But I definitely owe Justin Jaymes an alcoholic beverage.
00:39:43
I think that goes without saying, Yeah, I got my moment.
00:39:46
I knew I could hang on to that.
00:39:47
I was like, This guy's gonna get him.
00:39:50
But I told our audience ago I was explain to everybody when the fighters fly in on Tuesday, cause fight days on Saturday, They they signed 100 posters.
00:39:59
Well, that's your tickets for the big resulting right.
00:40:02
They weigh in.
00:40:03
They got to get the Reebok here.
00:40:05
They get their per diem.
00:40:07
And then the one thing they do from, I think, an interview you told us years ago.
00:40:10
They speak into a microphone and it's helpful with all the international fighters, and then they say their names.
00:40:16
So John obviously listens to it and is able to paint it.
00:40:19
I was even giving you props, saying I could listen to it and still fumble it on Saturday because I just have terrible retention.
00:40:26
But John does have that benefit of listening to how they say it, and that's the way.
00:40:29
However, Johnson's it on Saturday.
00:40:31
That's how it should be said.
00:40:33
And I noted that Morrow Ronaldo is also very meticulous about that.
00:40:37
Ariel Hirwani is also meticulous about it, and Ariel has leaned on Morrow for many on occasion.
00:40:43
And now you're kind of our guy for that.
00:40:45
So it was fondles all in on and a symbol so But I was like a shoes.
00:40:49
I heard it.
00:40:50
I can't like the book of the show.
00:40:53
Yeah, I got to go all in now on aerial used to rip Want to be asking for those fighter pronunciations, But that doesn't mean you get him right all the time because you have to practice.
00:41:01
And that's what is lost on so many people.
00:41:04
Now I have the benefit of the forced practice because I have to voice all the stuff before the show.
00:41:10
So even if I didn't walk to lean into the practice, I got a voice all this **** anyway, right.
00:41:14
But you have to practice saying these names.
00:41:17
And in a perfect world, if you're the play by play announcer, there is some tough ones that UFC to 51.
00:41:22
So maybe I'll need fanatics, right? But I shouldn't need fanatics on fight night if I've done the right homework.
00:41:27
I should have said this name 50 100 times that it should just roll off the tongue.
00:41:31
So most of the time, I practice enough so that the fanatics are needed on.
00:41:36
Yeah, I'll tell you real quick, and I know this is more about you.
00:41:39
You're our guest. But I had to do it twice.
00:41:41
John Annick goes on my cults of bites.
00:41:44
About five years ago, one Christian angular actually fought on bad beat, a promotion out in a Commerce California.
00:41:51
So we we did with R.
00:41:53
J.
00:41:54
Clifford from Sirius X, M and Fox Sports.
00:41:56
And then we did one with Jake Ellenberger and on, you know, those smaller shows, they're different.
00:42:01
They're just not a structured, you know, I don't want to bash the promoter.
00:42:04
He's a friend of art.
00:42:05
But he literally tells me, Go out there and do the post fight, you know? And I was like, What? Like that's a whole different ball of energy, your nerves than just sitting being okay side or back on the platform where we were calling the action, you know? But one thing that we've always told ourselves is we're never gonna turn down an opportunity to try something new, no matter what.
00:42:28
Right.
00:42:29
Well, so funny, cause I had to walk down a ramp, you know, after we way went over the replay and everything, we had to walk down the ramp and, uh, you know, after they announced the winner and all I kept thinking was I must've said Christian regular to myself about 500 times.
00:42:43
That's all thing.
00:42:44
The rest I knew I could figure it out because I watched you and others do it.
00:42:48
Hey, let's look at the screen and go with the finish.
00:42:51
What snags? You know, there's some laps there, right? But news missile may.
00:42:56
That's Christian in a Christian regular, you know. All right.
00:42:59
But what you're together for? Christian arugula? I won't seen some guys.
00:43:03
George will be like.
00:43:04
All right, give it up for your winner.
00:43:06
Right. They just forget the Senate.
00:43:08
Eight. Ladies and gentlemen, your winner.
00:43:09
Right? And not who do if you forget the name.
00:43:11
But last thing I'll say in 10 seconds, we have two different Aggie Lars and two different pain is on the roster and they pronounce their name differently.
00:43:20
Right? So Jessica Aguilar Kevin Angular Juliana Penna.
00:43:24
Louise Pain Yah! There are a lot of interested in you can't just CPN a and assume it's pain.
00:43:30
Yeah, because Juliana says it differently, you know? And if you don't listen to file every show on you don't practice, you're gonna screw it up.
00:43:37
So, uh, you know, that's my system.
00:43:39
That's all your going there again.
00:43:41
I didn't see a difference.
00:43:42
So one is like a regular and one is Aguilar like Agnel are.
00:43:48
So for those fighters.
00:43:49
I will write fanatics to make sure I don't screw up the intricacies, You know? Wow.
00:43:55
Keen as versus you know, Kenya, Jonah versus Cantona's.
00:44:00
I mean, there's a lot of, you know, little intricacies there.
00:44:03
Yeah, man, that would test my patience.
00:44:06
I'm old and cranky.
00:44:07
The other day I heard Billy Warranty.
00:44:09
Oh, say okay.
00:44:11
First of all is Billy Corn until Oh, you know.
00:44:13
You know what I said? How about you shut the **** up when we talk about your win here, right, Mr.
00:44:18
You know, I don't know.
00:44:19
I would lose it.
00:44:20
That's why the pros do it.
00:44:22
All right, John, how about that? You know, since we're going down this little rabbit hole of gaffes and stuff like that, tell us, have you had any other? I know what I'm curious about.
00:44:33
Do you get a lot of texts on fight night or, um, like during the fights to tow our to your people, at least know to back off then? You know, Ray long ago will text me during the fights because I've encouraged him to do so.
00:44:46
And I have the phone turned down, so very rarely will, like check it.
00:44:50
But you have most people in my life don't test me on flight night.
00:44:53
My wife will send a text when she goes to bed, you know, and I'll text her back.
00:44:56
But beyond that, I really don't check the phone too much.
00:44:58
I'm almost never on social media during a fight, you know, because I just don't know that that's productive.
00:45:04
I know some guys were able to do it.
00:45:06
There's so much communication going on with the truck, and I can assure you that my bosses don't want me anywhere near my cell phone when these live events air going on.
00:45:13
So, yeah, people, for the most part lay low.
00:45:17
But, you know, sometimes it's hard to not want to lean into that.
00:45:20
But the truck is monitoring social media in case we're doing anything superbly wrong that needs to be brought to our attention.
00:45:27
That may be the year rebels had one of those moments where you just want toe trucks.
00:45:31
You guys shut the **** up like little.
00:45:33
You're driving me nuts, you know, like it like it may be that they just keep pouring information on you.
00:45:39
and you're trying to put out fires? Yeah.
00:45:41
I mean, there is some of that.
00:45:42
I think we have a pretty good working relationship, and they know if they give us something and we don't use it to not be sensitive about that because we might have said it two minutes ago and they were doing something else in the truck.
00:45:51
So there have only been a few times where I've had to tell them to sort of ease up.
00:45:55
You know, there'll be times where they want a UFC store promo, and they sent a Luca is fighting Nico Christ.
00:46:01
And I'm thinking in my head, this is just not the matchup for me to read about, you know, Flight Island masks, you know? So there are times where maybe we have a promo, and I'm thinking maybe this isn't the right spot for it, but I try to stay in my lane and, ah, you know, defer to the bosses and let them handle that stuff.
00:46:17
But yeah, man.
00:46:18
I mean, in a three man booth, it's It's very challenging to begin with with traffic, listening to my broadcast partners, navigating everything that's going on.
00:46:26
So, uh, I'll tell you I'm so drained after these eight hours boys like and that's a part of it.
00:46:32
It's the energy of the broadcast, but also the backdoor communication that nobody hears.
00:46:37
I'm totally spent.
00:46:38
At the end of these nights, guys just totally done, John, if I was playing 300 basketball and I had my crew back in the day with your friends, when one of your buddy says, I can't make it, you get that replacement.
00:46:51
It just feels different doesn't mean that you're gonna have a bad game or anything.
00:46:54
There's just a different flow, and it takes a while for you toe play together.
00:46:59
In your case, you have multiple guys that will come in.
00:47:03
You can have a Daniel or may get with dominant crews of Paul Builder.
00:47:06
Um, I think you seem to flourish off of that.
00:47:09
I think you have good connections with all of them, But are there adjustments that you have to make in your frame of mind the way you do things because they have different personalities as well.
00:47:19
Yeah, and there are also different things that they're dealing with.
00:47:22
You may have a fighter who's in a training camp who was coming to call flights.
00:47:25
So his focused maybe isn't what it is on other shows.
00:47:29
I'm so thankful, and I appreciate you talking about me flourishing.
00:47:32
I'm so thankful to have had the chance to work with all these different broadcast combinations.
00:47:36
We just had a new one the last two weeks.
00:47:38
I had never done a three man booth with Booth with Michael visiting and Dominick Cruz, and I really enjoyed that dynamic.
00:47:44
Certainly there is part of me that would like to be in a consistent broadcast booth for 25 to 30 shows a year.
00:47:52
I was working almost exclusively in a two man booth with Brian Stand for a while, and I think you can really find tuna sports broadcast, especially in a sport as chaotic as ours.
00:48:03
When you do have those repetitions with one person, you know, I may go 10 weeks without calling a flight with Joe Rogan, and you sort of pick up where you left off.
00:48:11
But would it be better if I was working every show with the guy? I don't know how you could argue otherwise, so I enjoyed the different pivots, and I do think goes From an energy standpoint, maybe it helps having different dynamics weekend and week out.
00:48:25
But part of the doesn't look at these NFL teams and crave a little bit of normalcy there.
00:48:30
I'm being honest boy and hooker.
00:48:33
Where does it rank? You've seen a lot.
00:48:36
There's been a lot in front of your eyes.
00:48:37
But where does that fight rank amongst? All the battles that you better witnessed? Certainly has to be top 10 of any fight that I've never called.
00:48:45
I don't think it's the fight of the year because I thought the final eight minutes was pretty one sided.
00:48:51
You know, Dan Hooker, after the war, was felt or turning around quickly and her Korean really badly in round two.
00:48:57
But I just think from all the shock that he had absorbed from poor areas, ungodly accuracy, his cardio abandoned him down the stretch.
00:49:04
So when you compare that flight to like you want, a young jae said versus Giang Wei Li, not only was there a belt on the line for the women, but I wasn't even sure who wanted the end of those 25 minutes.
00:49:15
I thought John lately had one, but the outcome sort of late in the balance.
00:49:18
For me, it was truly back and forth over 25 minutes and this greatest hope reporting WAAS through 15 minutes or 17 minutes.
00:49:26
I didn't think it was back and forth through 25 minutes.
00:49:29
But that second round between those two guys, I think I said on the broadcast, that's probably around 2020.
00:49:35
Unless you like defense.
00:49:37
That might have been the best singular round that I have seen in the last five or seven years.
00:49:42
So it's hard for me with my memory not being a steel trap to compare years and decades.
00:49:48
But if it's not top 10 I I would be hard pressed to find nine fights better than that one that I've seen live John in our industry.
00:49:57
I think a lot of us have this moment where we look at our own go what? I gotta imagine Fight Island with probably one of those text where he said, Are you being serious? We're almost there.
00:50:08
Now, Uh, can you give us your thoughts on that whole process? With what? The adjustments in your life that you have to make.
00:50:16
How is that all gonna play out for genetic.
00:50:18
Well, it's gonna be interesting, man.
00:50:20
I mean, there have already been some things right.
00:50:21
I just was 12 nights in Vegas, away from my kids.
00:50:24
And then when I come back, unlike some people, I do wear a mask in the house for 48 hours just to kind of make sure I'm not symptomatic.
00:50:31
But it's not like I'm coming home and immediately wrapping my arms around my Children.
00:50:35
So a lot of what I'm thinking about is just getting home healthy, finding a way to protect myself, to get back to the U. S.
00:50:43
Healthy so that whatever I have to do in terms of a 14 day quarantine or something on the back end to at least be healthy enough to get home because there are coaches who are stuck in Vegas right now, quarantine away from their families because they Kalkhoven 19 when we were out there.
00:50:57
So for me, it's just about staying healthy so that I could do the job, and that's a big part of my focus, making sure the lungs air clean.
00:51:04
I'm trying to run more than ever to make sure that I can stay healthy, but Abu Dhabi has been on my radar for a long time.
00:51:10
You know, obviously the cat got out of the bag later than we all found out.
00:51:14
So we've known that the Flight island was not some tropical island in the Bahamas for a long time.
00:51:20
So I've conditioned myself to Abu Dhabi.
00:51:22
I'll fly to Las Vegas or quarantine for 36 hours, and then I'll be a novel Bobby for two weeks.
00:51:27
And, uh, it kind of is what it is, I think goes.
00:51:30
What's most crazy is that my call time is 1 a.m.
00:51:33
And the first flight is that area.
00:51:35
Unlike in September for UFC to 42.
00:51:37
When we canard the pay per view to the Abu Dhabi audience.
00:51:40
This time we're catering it to an American audience.
00:51:43
First flight 3 a.
00:51:44
m.
00:51:45
So we'll be sleeping all day and call in fights through the night.
00:51:47
So wheels up, baby.
00:51:50
Well, we can't wait.
00:51:52
It's gonna be pretty.
00:51:53
What you guys have been doing already is historic.
00:51:55
Starting in Jacksonville over here to the apex and then fight island.
00:51:59
Um, I was one of the Doubters.
00:52:02
I was wondering if it was too soon and I know Dana White is a maverick and you know he doesn't listen toe dummies like me, you know? But he's he's been able to pull it off, and it's really helped a lot of people who just wanted normalcy back into their lives like sports fans that wanted some sporting event out there, you know? And I mean, we got set Saturday nights, a bit of treat, and I was happy to hear you say early on that you guys have captured an audience and held on that alliance because most people that watched something like hooker and employ A It can have that Griffin Bonner effect that pulled in countless people and save this four years ago.
00:52:39
I remember when I was becoming an M m a fan just going down a Nick Diaz rabbit hole.
00:52:44
I'm spending like a whole day googling Nick D as back in the day, and I do believe if you watch a fight like Dustin, poor EA Dan Hooker and maybe you just aligned with the sport itself or you align with one of those fighters and it gets you hooked so hopefully we can continue that traction deep into football.
00:53:01
soothing, but it's been an exciting time.
00:53:02
And, uh, you know, the UFC has really managed risk beautifully.
00:53:06
I've said to you guys privately, we have so many safety and security concerns, so many different variables that we're dealing with weekend and week out that I was not at all surprised to see the UFC be bullish in terms of wanting to execute in this climate.
00:53:19
And I'm not surprised to see the well oiled machine execute as well.
00:53:23
But it's on the Flight island, right? We still got to get it all done in Abu Dhabi, and, uh, you know, that's the focus.
00:53:28
Now we got eight shows in the can, and now we got four more to crank out a real quick, by the way, regarding Kobe, the throat or the nose.
00:53:37
Which one's Which one sucks worse.
00:53:39
So the nasal swab protocol has changed a little bit.
00:53:43
Usually it would have been like between four and 12 seconds.
00:53:46
Now, Jeff Novitzky tells me it has to be like 15 seconds.
00:53:50
So nasal swabs a nonstarter for me, boys.
00:53:52
I mean, I'm a gag er at naturally.
00:53:54
So at first I was like Who the throats gonna be worse than the nasal, but the throat is like three or four seconds.
00:54:00
I tell these fighters like Paul Fowler, but no, you fight these 25 minute wars and you're worried about an eight second nasal swab like you just don't need to worry about the nasal swab, you know? So yeah, throat over nasal Every day of the week.
00:54:13
We might even have a choice in Abu Dhabi.
00:54:15
And I will choose throat every step of the way.
00:54:18
Yeah, that's great.
00:54:19
Right? So now we're gonna talk a little bit of, ah, other sports.
00:54:23
And just so that you don't say Oh, man, it's two on one while you guys gang up on me.
00:54:27
We brought in some New England backup for you right now.
00:54:30
I want to introduce Ray Ruth, uh, from the railroad official NFL content partner co host SportsCastr News covering the entire NFL.
00:54:39
Also being a the in sorry peopie in sports talk, covering all the latest and greatest stories in game surrounding the **** New England Patriots there.
00:54:50
How you doing? How's it going? Thank you for having me. Alright.
00:54:53
Hey, Wanted to ask you a question, John, Annex someone from the Northeast Ah, your country s o you hear on, SportsCastr? We all kind of back each other up when we said Yeah, sure.
00:55:03
You know, done great it ah, answering any type of question, Not just them.
00:55:07
A perfect.
00:55:09
So a week ago, I wouldn't have had a single question to ask you.
00:55:12
But obviously big news came out on Saturday.
00:55:14
Cam Newton, now a New England patriot, sort of a two part question.
00:55:17
What was your first reaction to him joining the Patriots? And Number two, The question that I probably get asked 3000 times a day? Well, the 2020 Patriots led by Cam Newton, be better than the 2019 Patriots led by Tom Brady.
00:55:31
Well, that's a great question on the back end.
00:55:33
I do think it stands to reason that they could be better, I think for Cam Newton, the buzzword of healthy, he has to be healthy to do what he does to effectively change the game at an M V P level.
00:55:43
But, gosh, I was jumping out of my skin when I woke up to the news that Cam Newton was a patriot.
00:55:47
I think anybody who has watched Tom Brady's career as a Bostonian as a New England guy considers him the greatest of all time.
00:55:54
But that doesn't we can't recognize his limitations within a playbook.
00:55:58
And if you don't think that Josh McDaniels is chomping at the bit toe, open up a playbook with a guy who has legs and can make something out of nothing, then you're just not paying attention.
00:56:08
So I am just wildly optimistic.
00:56:11
I think Cam Newton first has to beat Jared Stadium, right? He has to be healthy enough to win the job, which I don't think is guaranteed right now.
00:56:18
But, I mean, I couldn't be more excited about Cam Newton.
00:56:21
I've always wanted them to have a mobile quarterback. I think.
00:56:24
Josh McDaniels begged Bill Belichick to draft Lamar Jackson back in the day, and he couldn't get BB to commit.
00:56:29
So I think McDaniels is excited.
00:56:31
I think Cam Newton is excited if you follow him on social media.
00:56:34
You know the dudes in shape right now.
00:56:37
I'm excited, man.
00:56:38
And with respect to number four, Jarrett Stidham, I hope Cabinet wins the job and is the opening day store.
00:56:45
Yeah, me too.
00:56:47
What do you do? Brain part once in a while doing that with you.
00:56:51
I know the back of a for the night.
00:56:55
They're going in there.
00:56:56
You need the back of name the problem.
00:56:57
Well, I know I don't get that many chances to talk about my beloved New England Patriots, and I'm a little bit older than you guys, right? But I was a season ticket holder in the eighties when the Patriots were the laughing stock of the NFL.
00:57:09
So those who think some of us are bandwagon jumpers My grandfather made me sit through every 42 10 loss and listen to the whole postgame radio show the whole way home we put in the time.
00:57:20
You know, I didn't need six championships necessarily.
00:57:23
But again, my record and Foxboro is like 50 games below 500 so I don't wanna hear How about raised background? I'm gonna put this up bigly pretty.
00:57:33
I mean, I'm not a Patriots fan, but I gotta admit that it's pretty.
00:57:36
I got a question for both of you guys.
00:57:38
Um, who's gonna be the most valuable player are just more viable, I guess.
00:57:43
Person for the New England Patriots here, Josh McDaniels got his work cut out Bill Balletic the head coach from some say it was him, not Brady Cam Newton or D.
00:57:54
The sideline cam guy.
00:57:56
There are some good.
00:57:59
I mean, right.
00:58:00
You want to take that one? Yeah, Well, first of all, they're not allowed to have Ah, sideline Cam guys.
00:58:05
This year, they've been banned by the NFL because of the whole spy gate.
00:58:08
Two point. Oh, nonsense.
00:58:10
Ah, it's Bill ballot check Bill Biology.
00:58:13
You know, I like Tom Brady is the greatest quarterback to ever play the game, but you can't point to me and tell me that he wanted 13 to 3 Super Bowl.
00:58:20
And that wasn't just a defensive masterclass by Bill Belichick.
00:58:24
I think that as New England Patriot fans, we get stuck way too much into this just ridiculous argument of of you know, who's responsible for the dynasty.
00:58:33
I think that they're both equally responsible, and really, Robert Kraft is probably the one the most responsible for keeping the both of them intact, but that being side bill balance check is still the greatest coach and GM in the NFL, and Josh McDaniels is an offensive genius, and I love the move that he made on defense is here.
00:58:49
The fact that Cam Newton doesn't even need to be 2015 Cam Newton when he won the MRP, he just needs to be a game manager.
00:58:57
That makes the occasional play.
00:58:58
Because that defense, even though we lost the Boogeyman with Jamie Collins and and those guys and Kyle van Noy, they brought in UK, they Ah, Chase winner, which is gonna be jumping in this year.
00:59:09
They still cut the defensive player of the year.
00:59:11
They still got a future Hall of Famer Devin McCourty.
00:59:13
That defense is gonna win them games and camp just has to do enough with that.
00:59:17
And, ah, the new, you know, the now healthy offensive line and the improved running game.
00:59:22
Yeah, I mean, there have been some defensive losses.
00:59:24
There's no doubt about it.
00:59:26
I don't know that Bill Belichick has to really prove anything to anyone, and I think we talk a lot about the Super Bowls and Belichick versus Brady.
00:59:32
But let me be clear to anybody who's listening.
00:59:35
As a guy who has gotten to know former Patriots before, no coach in the history of professional sports has gotten adult men to buy in to a program more than Bill Belichick, and you don't even have to like it.
00:59:47
And a lot of the players see that commute excited Bill Belichick that a lot of people don't say.
00:59:51
But no coach in the history of professional sports has accomplished more than Bill Belichick.
00:59:56
I think Cam Newton has the pressure.
00:59:58
He's the guy that needs to prove that he can turn back the clock, so to speak.
01:00:02
But I do believe it's a defense that will win them a lot of games.
01:00:05
And I think the playbook will be very catered to Cam if he does win the job and it will be set up for him to succeed.
01:00:13
But even though Bell check I know feels like maybe he has a lot to prove and has a huge, hugely heightened focus for this season, Belichick don't have to prove anything to me.
01:00:21
That's for **** sure.
01:00:23
Boy, White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany got nothing on your right eye todo.
01:00:33
But Bill Jackson might have something to say about that last thing you were saying.
01:00:36
He's done pretty well himself as the head coach, but two different franchises.
01:00:40
There's no disputing that the Patriots have done something incredible in the last 20 years.
01:00:44
Much respect.
01:00:45
Honestly, you know, quick on basketball will end with that.
01:00:48
Can you guys get past Toronto in Milwaukee in the finals and we'll allow you guys t give us a liver shot? Can we get past the Clippers and all other opposition? Uh, what do you think the Finals will look like in this shortened embassy? I think it's gonna be the Lakers and the Bucks.
01:01:07
I really do.
01:01:08
I know that's chalky, but I think it's gonna be hard for the Celtics of the rafters.
01:01:12
I think they're gonna have to be pretty perfect.
01:01:15
And I will say to the NFL's a coach's league right.
01:01:17
The MBA with respect to Phil Jackson, totally different thing.
01:01:20
The NFL roster turns over like 1/3 every year, but I think it's the Lake showman.
01:01:25
I mean, I do think that Avery Bradley is a loss, and I'm not sure how quantify abilities right now.
01:01:30
But if I had to bet right now, regardless of price and you give me 1000 bucks to bet on a team, I'm betting on the Lakers to emerge out of a Lakers Milwaukee final.
01:01:40
Who? Well, we'll press.
01:01:42
All right? What do you think? Right.
01:01:43
Well, I'm from Toronto, so I'm a Raptor in, Um, I actually believe that we're better without quiet this year than we were last year.
01:01:51
Because we're very one dimensional were very one dimensional with Kwai Leonard.
01:01:55
And we saw a lot come out of Paschal Siachen last season.
01:01:59
This year has been unbelievable up until the until the break.
01:02:03
Also, Kyle Lowry is playing with with a brand new sort of movement.
01:02:07
That being said, I don't see anybody getting past Milwaukee, Aziz.
01:02:11
Much as I love to say, we could do it again.
01:02:14
That's where we're going to Miss Kwai Leonard, because that's when we need him to take over a game.
01:02:18
And at this point, as much as I love Pascal, he reminds me a lot of a Chris Bosh who's sort of a number two on a team and not a true number one.
01:02:26
Um, yeah, I think it's gonna be a Lakers championship.
01:02:30
As much as it kills me to say that over Milwaukee.
01:02:32
I gotta say I'm right on with John.
01:02:34
Yeah, that what? When that one well worth all right? Yeah.
01:02:38
I got to say I, um I don't watch Toronto basketball enough to know, but that's pretty powerful for you to say.
01:02:43
They're better without Kalinka.
01:02:45
I can tell you this much.
01:02:46
They say the company players in the league are Anthony Davis, LeBron James.
01:02:51
Quite better.
01:02:52
We have cool bone, but I will say I think the number one guys colli man, that guy's fees and he beast us a lot.
01:02:57
So I'm scared of the Clippers.
01:02:58
They went three and one against the Lakers this year, but we'll see.
01:03:01
Fellas, I want thank you both for joining us here and hanging out, Um, much love to the Northeast, you know? Good luck.
01:03:08
I really hope we have a football season so we can figure it out.
01:03:10
What is it? Brady? Was the fella check again when you guys did in these last 20 years of pretty amazing And and now I think football is just gonna get even more interesting.
01:03:20
You got those two guys two studs down in Tampa Bay helping those guys out.
01:03:24
And you know the the leaders to start to fill out of course, Cove in 19.
01:03:28
That that wild card you know.
01:03:30
How's it going affecting? I don't know.
01:03:32
Let's just get some healthy bodies out there.
01:03:34
I'll even take no fans at this point.
01:03:36
Um, but of course, I'd rather have the fan, but in the meantime, you both stay safe and stay healthy, John.
01:03:42
Outstanding job was always safe.
01:03:44
Travels the yas island and keep kicking.
01:03:47
Knocking it out of the part.
01:03:48
Man.
01:03:49
You guys, you know, I love every chance I get to chop it up with you boys.
01:03:52
So thanks for the call, and maybe we'll do something from the island.
01:03:55
I'm just gonna be quarantined in my room, so don't be.
01:03:57
Don't be strangers sports, all right? We'll call you on that, man.
01:04:00
Outset, figure out the time that I'll have to screw something up between now and then.
01:04:05
So you can.
01:04:08
All right.
01:04:09

01:04:21
Who, slowly becoming a legend.
01:04:23
Honestly, in our sport.
01:04:24
Can't say enough about that guy.
01:04:26
And of course, that was nice to meet Ray.
01:04:28
Hoping I said his name, right? It was very wrong.
01:04:31
I au th and I focused the Portland.
01:04:34
Just the route part should ask back.
01:04:37
Yeah, he probably would have known he would have known. Ray.
01:04:41
And who subs in parade when ready takes a vacation.
01:04:44
That guy so? Well, we'll read.
01:04:45
But that's what makes him the best in the business.
01:04:47
All right, folks.
01:04:48
So listen, were the clothes on out of here with a couple of minutes texts? I'm sure you didn't mind that.
01:04:52
Um, and of course, keep it locked on MME Junkie here because we're gonna then and coverage goes mentioned it earlier.
01:04:58
We're not stopping.
01:04:59
All right, we got a guy, too.
01:05:01
Uh, he's a He's a thoroughbred.
01:05:02

01:05:05

01:04:05
So you can.
01:04:08
All right.
01:04:09
See you, John Feehery. Thanks, guys. Thank you.
01:04:11
All right.
01:04:12
All right, folks.
01:04:13
And that is it for today.
01:04:15
What a fun show, huh? Yeah, yeah.
01:04:18
We got to catch up with John Annick there.
01:05:02
We're gonna put him on a plane and set him out there. Two yards Island.
01:05:05
He's gonna be there for 23 days.
01:05:06
It's John Morgan.
01:05:07
So we will have were a few sites.
01:05:09
It's gonna have coverage on the island for these next four events that are coming up.
01:05:14
Now, remember, on Saturday enjoy Independence Day with your family and friends barbecue.
01:05:20
And of course, staying safe is always be careful with those gatherings.
01:05:24
Uh, there's no knowing me event.
01:05:26
They started following the cannula.
01:05:28
All right, so we'll be back next Wednesday and will give you a preview of that huge, tremendous Carnoustie to 51 along with reminders where you see 2 51 watching long on July 11.
